[Steven] You know,
it's hard to believe
my very first challenge
was almost 10 years ago.
In a location a lot like this.
This is every American
boy's dream right here.
There's no tapping
out for this guy, all right?
I plan on putting Alabama
over my knee and spanking it.
Ha ha!
- [Chalese] Whoo!
- Food, b*tches!
[Chalese] That's sick.
[Steven] You're damn right.
You know why?
Because I'm the
king of the forest.
Look at that!
But in all my challenges
over all these years...
Go, go, go, go, go!
Go!
Get some snow.
The one thing I've learned...
Oh, my God.
It's never easy.
This is my fourth
tooth I've lost
on aked and Afraid challenges.
- [thunderclap]
- [yelps]
[partner] [bleep] Kentucky.
[Steven] And no
matter how hard you try,
you never know...
I'm getting pretty tired.
If your next challenge...
[groans] Ah, [bleep]!
Oh!
Is gonna be your last.
[thunderclap]
Here it comes.
[rain pattering]
Oh, my God.
It's cold.
[partner] Steven!
Steven!
[woman] I'm just not sure
anybody can survive here
for 21 days.
[woman 2] Oh, my God!
[yelling]
[narrator reading]
Ow!
[man] Run! Go, go, go!
Oh, God.
Whoa!
[yelling]
Oh, sh**t.
[exclaiming]
[man] Don't tap...
[yelling]
die first.
[Steven] I'm out here
in the wilds of Kentucky.
It's crazy that
I'm back out here
on my eighth challenge.
I never thought I'd be doing
another Naked and Afraid.
But I guess you can't
teach an old dog new tricks,
so I'm back.
A lot of this place reminds me
of my first challenge
in Alabama,
the trees, the plants.
But just because this is an
environment that I'm familiar with
doesn't make it
any less dangerous.
I'm about to meet people
going on their first 21-day.
My partners don't
know I'm coming.
The King has returned.
Ladies and gentlemen,
you're welcome in advance.
[Allison] I feel like people
might underestimate Kentucky,
but there are a lot
of dangers here.
There's black bears out here.
There are a ton of ticks
and venomous snakes.
But, I don't know,
I'm really feeling
good about this area,
and I'm just ready
to rock and roll.
I'm ready to rock
the weird today.
Whoo!
Welcome to the treetops.
I have a crazy
obsession with trees,
and I want to spend as much
time out in nature as possible,
so I became a natural
movement trainer.
And natural movement
basically means
the movement of our
hunter-gatherer ancestors,
the things that they would
need to do to survive.
It includes jumping, running,
lifting, carrying, climbing.
What is life,
man? This is a trip.
I started training
survival skills
I have practiced in
plant identification.
I know how to build
and maintain a fire
and shelter building.
But I've never
actually had to rely on
my own personally-built shelter
to stay warm and dry
in the middle of
a cold rainy night,
so I'm definitely going to
be learning a lot out here, too.
All right, let's get naked.
[narrator] Allison's hands-on
knowledge of the natural world
earns her a starting primitive
survival rating of 6.4 out of 10.
Into the woods I go...
naked. [giggles]
[Jenny] So it's one
thing doing this at home
in my local woods,
but being in a completely
different country,
a completely new
environment to me
with different wildlife,
this is definitely going to be
the toughest thing I've
ever done in my life,
mentally, emotionally,
and physically.
But I'm just feeling
excited and just ready to go.
I have a passion
for the outdoors.
I've been more of a wild camper.
I've loved hiking.
I've loved any outdoor sports.
And then I started training
and learning all
these survival skills.
That's actually become
a passion of mine.
I love survival.
I want to be a survivalist.
My husband, Steven,
actually did this
challenge last year.
He completed his
21 days in Colombia.
Yes!
I caught meself a minnow.
Looks like the
trap's been tripped.
It's a massive iguana. Yes!
[Jenny] After
Steven completed it,
I just wanted that
same buzz that he had,
to feel that I could
do something like this
and something that
I could be proud of.
This is what I've spent the
past few years training for.
I've learned all the skills
that I feel I'm gonna need,
and this is the
place to test myself.
For me, this is more
of an opportunity
to show that I've
got my own skills,
and prove to myself
that I'm mentally stronger
than I ever thought I could be.
I do have a lot of
fear coming into this,
but I'm not gonna
let that hold me back.
[narrator] Jenny
is highly-trained,
but remains
untested in the wild.
She earns a starting PSR of 5.9.
I can't believe I'm doing this.
All right, back at it.
[narrator] After completing
seven challenges
and never tapping,
Steven has earned the status
of aked and Afraid Legend.
He starts with a PSR of 9.3.
Challenge number eight...
[sighs] Let's do it.
Oh, my God,
I have a female partner!
- This is...
- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- I'm Jenny.
-I'm Allison. Would you
like to... -Nice to meet...
Oh, come on.
- Why not? We're a team!
- Oh, my gosh.
Is the excitement
higher than the fear?
Or where are we at with...
I have a lot of fear right now,
- but still totally excited.
- Yeah.
- What about you?
- My excitement is so high.
But also, this is...
This is totally scary
and such a weird place to...
be naked.
Yeah.
- Yeah.
- But we're gonna do it.
- We're gonna do it. 21 days.
- Together.
[Steven] Plot twist.
Whoa, my God!
- Are you [bleep] kidding me?
- No!
Steven Lee Hall Jr.,
"the King of the Forest."
- No way!
- Oh, my God!
I'm gonna come down.
Give me a second.
- I want to come down there.
- [Allison] No way!
- What the heck?
- [Jenny] This is insane.
- Wow, oh, my God.
- Are you guys excited?
- Are you huggers?
- Oh, my God, absolutely huggers.
- Yeah! What's up, beautiful?
- Hi.
Are you excited?
So excited.
Now I am even more so.
Like, excited that I
had female partner,
excited that I've got somebody
that really knows what...
-[laughing] -[Steven
laughs] ...what's going on.
I'm stoked. This is such
a crazy beautiful place.
- Yeah.
- There's this stigma that it's in the United States,
and it's Kentucky,
and it's not dangerous,
but that is like
totally not true.
This is just as dangerous
as when I go to Africa
or when I go to the Amazon.
And I'm not here to
tell you guys what to do.
I'm gonna learn
from you guys, too.
- [Allison] Yeah.
- And we're gonna do this as a trio.
I appreciate you saying that.
- Absolutely!
- Yeah.
You know, we can
help each other,
build each other up,
and help each other grow.
[Allison] I was so surprised
to see Steven standing
on the top of that cliff.
He is a legend.
So, let's start the challenge.
- Heck, yeah. Let's go.
- Let's go.
I really didn't
have an idea either
that my other partner
was gonna be a female.
So this has just been
an absolute shock to me.
My one item is a mosquito net.
- [Steven] Nice!
- It's not just a mosquito net,
but we can also use
this for catching fish.
- Amazing.
- [Steven] Good move.
What do you guys have?
All right, so I brought
a hunting slingshot.
It's kind of like sh**ting
a bow and arrow.
I have my fire starter.
And that's a pivotal
item out here.
[narrator] The survivalists
have also been given a blade
and a pot for boiling water.
And I've also got a map.
- We are here.
- [Allison] So we must be...
Yep. The closest water source
is going to be this little creek
coming in from this... kind
of the bigger pond area.
We can kind of
check this area out.
If this is like a
big cave system,
that's going to take a lot of
worry out of our shelter building,
and it's gonna keep us safe.
- Awesome. Okay.
- Yeah, I definitely want to check out that cliff face.
You know, and then we can...
kind of come over here
later on and check this out.
There might be some fishing.
And if we need to move later on,
we can do that.
- For sure. Yeah.
- Sound like a plan?
- Perfect.
- Let's do it.
Cool. Let's do it.
[narrator] For this
21-day challenge,
Steven will lead
Allison and Jenny
into the untamed wild
of Kentucky's
Cumberland Plateau,
a treacherous patchwork
of steep limestone cliffs
and dense pine forests
that is home to black
bears, territorial coyotes,
and highly venomous snakes,
like the timber rattlesnake
and the copperhead,
whose exceptional camouflaging
make them a deadly
threat at every step.
The oppressive heat
and humidity of summer
can change in a flash
as thunderstorms
blast the plateau,
sending temperatures plummeting
and unleashing
swarms of black flies
and bloodthirsty ticks
that can carry such
deadly diseases
as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
- There's some thorns right there.
- [Allison] Whoo!
[Steven grunts]
[Allison] Ooh,
you little b*stards!
-[sucks teeth] -[Steven]
Yeah, be careful of that one.
[Allison] What are you guys
most worried about out here?
I'm probably worried
more about the wildlife.
This is going to
sound pretty crazy.
I'm actually coming into
this to face a lot of my fears.
I'm terrified of snakes,
coyotes, bobcats.
[Steven] Definitely here,
coyotes, for sure, out here.
We're definitely...
We're definitely getting
copperhead or diamondback
- or... I mean...
- Okay.
With the amount of like
rock faces around here,
I mean, that's their
bread and butter.
I'm scared of animals.
I think if I'm able to
face these fears out here,
then I don't think anything's
going to stand in my way
for anything that I
want to do in the future.
I'm going to know that
no matter how bad a fear is
that there is a way through it
and you will get
to the other side.
So how are you feeling about
being here for three weeks,
having never done it before?
[Allison] I'm definitely
somebody who loves
being outside in nature,
and I really feel at home.
But usually I have a
backpack full of gear, a tent.
So sleeping on the dirt is
gonna be a game changer.
[Jenny] Yeah.
[Steven] Your first challenge
is the hardest challenge
you'll ever have.
It's the first time
you're really starving.
It's the first time
you're actually thirsty.
Bugs are crawling
on you at night.
You're literally stripped
of every comfort
that you've ever had.
So if you don't have
the mental strength
to get through to the next day,
you're just not gonna
make it out here.
[Jenny] Wow, it's hot.
[Steven] Yeah, the
humidity. It's cooking.
It being this hot and this humid
fire and water are pivotal.
[Allison] Whoo, do you guys
feel it getting hotter as we go up?
The elevation
change here is no joke.
We need to hydrate and
we need to find a shelter
because it can be dangerous
with the level of heat
and humidity out here today.
Check this out.
This is definitely
the little creek
that was right in front
of that map marker.
- [Jenny] Mmm-hmm!
- So I'm pretty sure...
-[Allison gasps] -...that's
where we're going.
This hike has been quite tough
so I'm really excited to
get to where we're going
and prepare for our first night.
[Allison] It's very steep
whenever it gets super-wet.
It's going to be
really steep right here.
[Steven] Yeah,
we got to be careful
going up and
down this, for sure.
[Allison] Yeah.
[Steven] Look at that.
[Allison] Holy [bleep]!
[Steven] This cave is huge.
Totally dry!
[Jenny] So definitely
shelter from the rain.
- [Steven] Yeah.
- Should we be worried about snakes in here?
[Steven] Oh, 100%.
You always have to be
prepared for everything.
But, actually, this is
going to retain heat
whenever we need it
to, when it's cold at night,
and it's also going to
retain some coolness
- during the heat of the day.
- [Steven] That's right. Yup.
We're close to our water source.
- I like it.
- [Allison] Yeah.
Having to chop down a
bunch of trees to build a shelter
would have been really,
really energy intensive.
So finding this giant cave
really provides me
a sense of security,
knowing that we're going
to be able to stay mostly dry
during these crazy storms
that rip through here.
We have water
when it rains here,
- but shouldn't we go find actual running water?
- 100%.
Should we go together?
Or I could also start
collecting firewood.
Yeah, I think
that's a good plan.
Me and Jenny, you
want to go down there?
- We'll try to get a water sitch going on.
- Yeah. Yeah, sure.
Look. This looks like
a good spot right here.
It's kind of crazy.
I'm with two people that
this is their first challenge.
Jenny's out here to
really overcome fears.
I got a lot of respect for her
for even coming out
here and trying this.
And I think she's
going to do great.
- It looks like Nesquik.
- [laughs] Right?
If it was only as good.
Yeah.
[Steven] And I got Allison,
who is super go-getter
tree-loving nature.
It's their day 1 of 1,
and this is my day 252.
I'm just trying to dig
out the really big rocks
so that we sleep comfortably.
Ah, great.
[Steven] It's gonna
be a hell of a journey.
I'm excited for it.
Fire is one of the
most important things.
It's going to keep
us warm at night.
That also keeps us
safe from predators.
Oh.
- Yeah!
- Nice.
[Steven] Slow and steady.
[Jenny] For my first
night here, I am excited,
but I think it's just
crazy to be out here.
I do feel maybe a
little overwhelmed.
This is real now.
[coyotes howling]
[shrieks]
[screams]
[coyotes howling]
[growling]
[shrieks]
[Steven] Yeah, I
can tell you are.
[Allison] Mmm.
[Steven] Morning! Day 2!
- Mmm-hmm.
- [yawns]
[Allison] How are
you feeling, Jenny?
Yeah, I'm good.
I...
- Decent?
- Yeah.
[Jenny] Sleep well?
[Allison laughs] Not really. No.
Last night we had
a load of coyotes.
I did worry they were
going to get a bit closer.
I had a little bit
of a panic attack.
[Steven] Did you get any sleep?
-No. -Oh, God.
[Steven] Last night
was rough for Jenny.
Your mental strength is
literally your biggest asset
in any survival situation.
So I've made sure that she
knows that I'm there for her,
that Allison's there for her,
and we're all going to
cross the finish line together.
That is my number one main goal,
our trio finish on day 21.
You did good. You went through...
- Yeah!
- You got through your first night in the dark.
- Yeah.
- With feral dogs running around.
- In a cave.
- Like, I mean, that's...
that's a checkmark.
It is, yeah. I'm quite
proud of myself.
- Yeah! You should be.
- [Allison] Heck yeah!
- You should be.
- I'm proud of you, too.
Do you want to go out and
have a look for some food?
How far do you think
the... like, pond thing is?
[Steven] I'm not quite sure.
- Do you wanna kind of venture down...
- [Allison] If we just follow...
that way a little bit today
and see what's around there?
[Steven] If we start following
down that creek bed...
Yeah.
- Yeah, we should be able to find something.
- I definitely want to explore
and see what we have
available to us here.
[Jenny] Right. I
think we should go.
Let's do it to it.
- Let's do it!
- Let's go!
[narrator] From
their cave location,
the team will head north
to explore a large pond
over two and a half miles away.
[Allison] How far would you
say that we've walked so far?
[Steven] I'd say we've
gone at least a couple miles.
[Allison] Yeah.
- [yelps] Ooh!
- [Steven] Ooh, God. You okay?
Yeah. That could've been bad.
- Yeah, I was... I would've got you.
- [Allison giggles]
[Jenny] I think I'm just feeling
a little lightheaded
with the heat.
[Steven] Yeah, we really should
have drank more this morning.
I think it's just hitting
me that I've had no sleep.
If you need to take a breather.
- Yeah, I might need to.
- Yeah, we can take a breather.
[Allison] This
hike is definitely
a lot more intense
than we expected.
Jenny is really struggling
in the state that she's in.
She might just
faint at any moment.
So we just kind of
need to take it slow,
and I hope we make
it there eventually,
and I hope it's worthwhile.
[Jenny] Right, I'll...
- Let's go slowly. Yeah.
- Okay? Yeah!
I'm starting to get that
pain from hunger now.
I need something to eat.
[Allison] Oh,
there's little fish!
[Jenny] No!
- [Steven] We got a little baby fish?
- No!
- Yeah, there's some minnows in there.
- [Allison] Yeah, dude!
We need to get some minnows.
We've been walking for a while,
and we haven't
gotten to the pond,
but we just found
lots of minnows.
So we're going to try to
catch us some food today.
[Steven] We can
do a test. Test pull.
- [Jenny] Is he gonna go?
- [Allison] There's a big one over here.
- Oh...
- Aah!
- [Allison] Aw.
- See, this is what...
Oh, we got one!
- [Allison] One?
- There's a little guy!
- Aah!
- There's a little guy in there!
- All right, you gotta be the first one.
- So cool!
- [Steven] You gotta be the first one.
- [Jenny] Okay. Ready.
- All right.
- My first protein!
- First protein! Day 2!
- Go! Go!
Down the gullet!
- Whoo!
- Yeah-ha-ha-ha, girl!
Yeah, girl!
The minnow just tasted
like a burst of yuck.
But short and sweet, a
bit of protein inside me.
Good to go.
[Allison] Cool. Let's go.
We got to get at least
two more minnows.
- Oh, yeah, your turn.
- [Steven] We gotta double...
- double minnow it up.
- [Allison] I want a small one, though.
Yeah.
- [Steven] You wanna try it?
- [Allison] Okay.
- One, two, three, go.
- Two, three.
- Oh! Yeah!
- Oh, there's one!
[all cheering]
- [Steven] It's a big one!
- He's yours! Let's go!
This one's bigger!
[Jenny] Are you doing him live?
- Doing him live.
- [Allison] Doing him live.
All right, here we go.
[Jenny and Steven laughing]
[Jenny] How did that feel?
- Can you still feel it wriggling?
- I'm like...
It's in there.
So we've barely had
any water this morning.
- [Steven] Yeah, we need to go back.
- It's getting really hot now.
We need to hydrate.
We followed the creek
to try to find the pond,
but the problem was
we didn't really know
how far away the pond was.
The dehydration being
a real threat out here,
we need to turn back.
But we got a couple of minnows.
I think it was a pretty
big morale boost
for all three of us.
We've eaten today.
We've eaten today!
- Everybody!
- Yeah!
I had my first live k*ll.
- You did!
- Yes!
[coyote howling]
[growling]
[Jenny panicking]
[Steven speaking]
[Allison] Are you
scared that the coyotes
are gonna come... get you?
Yeah. I think they're
gonna come up.
Our fire is not big enough.
[Steven] I've never in my...
probably thousands of
days cowboy-camping,
I've heard 'em,
I've never once had one
come up on me in camp, so.
[Allison] Mmm-hmm.
[Steven] They're not wolves.
And there's no wolves here.
How do you feel about it?
I'm not concerned at all.
Yeah, we're not their food.
[Jenny] I feel like you comforted
me before I had a meltdown there.
-I knew... I knew... -You
knew it was coming.
I'm like one of those like
emotional support dogs
that like knows when a...
[laughing] ...when
like a seizure
or a panic attack
is about to happen.
- It's gonna be okay.
- It is quite funny.
You're gonna be okay.
[Allison] All right,
we're gonna try to get
some more sleep, yes?
- [Steven] Yeah.
- [Jenny] Mmm.
[snoring]
We are on day 3,
and I'm not going to lie,
I've gone through some wobbles.
I know that my skills
can take me the 21 days.
The one thing I
am finding out here
is I'm really struggling with
the mental side of things.
And with the lack
of sleep and food,
I don't know how I'm
functioning, to be honest.
I just need to try and
focus on keeping busy
and, um, just get
on with the day.
[Allison] Ooh, some
sharp rocks, too.
Take this nice and slow.
The first attempt
of finding the pond,
we were not prepared.
We were getting very dehydrated.
So today we're gonna
be coming prepared.
We're gonna be bringing
our pot full of water.
We're gonna bring
our fire starter,
so that once we get to the pond,
we can boil up some more water.
And then also, hopefully,
we'll be able to cook
whatever food we find
while we're out there.
Oh, there's a bird!
First one I've actually seen.
- [Jenny] Oh, wow!
- [Steven] Holy cow.
Yeah, that's the first
bird we've seen out here.
I expected it to be
just an enormous
amount of squirrels
and groundhogs and birds.
I've heard one squirrel the
entire time that I've been here.
Um, I've heard one or two birds.
You know, the reason
I brought that slingshot
was to take down these
small game creatures.
And they are just not here.
So that's a little concerning.
[Allison] A little further
than we thought, huh?
[Jenny] Mmm. Definitely.
I don't think this a every
couple of days kind of hike.
[Allison] Oh, no.
This would take a lot out of us
if we did this every day.
I just hope that
once we get there,
we find something that
makes all this work worthwhile.
I feel like it's
getting more humid.
[Steven] Yeah, it definitely
feels like thicker air down here.
[Allison] Yeah.
[Steven gasps] Holy [bleep]!
We got a snake.
It's a copperhead.
[Allison] Holy [bleep], my
heart just started racing so fast.
[Steven] Good eye. Good eye.
[narrator] The
copperhead is a pit viper
that is responsible
for more bites
than any other snake in the US.
With a lethal dose of
over 100 mg of venom,
one bite can bring
on severe swelling,
difficulty breathing,
and rapid heart rates.
[Steven] So this is
what we're gonna do.
-[Allison exhales] -I'm
gonna pin him down.
You're gonna come
up right here with me...
- [Jenny] Yeah.
- After I have him pinned,
and he's gonna
be flipping around,
- just telling you.
- Mmm-hmm.
Okay, we're gonna
hold the stick together,
and then Allison's gonna...
-chop the head... -[Allison] Yeah,
dude, you're conquering a fear here.
[Steven] This is big. Look
how close you are right now.
That's amazing. That's amazing.
- [Allison] Yeah.
- All right? You girls ready?
- [Allison] I'm [bleep] ready.
- It's a big moment.
[Steven] We're
gonna do this together.
All right?
[Allison] This is [bleep] crazy.
Holy [bleep]!
- [Steven] You girls ready?
- [Allison] I'm [bleep] ready.
It's a big moment.
[Allison] Oh, my God.
[Steven] Okay. Come over here.
- [Steven] So you can... you can go slow.
- Do I do it slow?
Yep, I have him super-pinned.
Don't let your hand slip.
Stab. There you go. Keep going.
- There you go.
- [Allison] His head is off.
[Steven] Is his head off? Okay.
Now, stay away from the head
'cause the head
can still bite ya.
[Allison] Copperhead head.
My number one goal for
capturing food out here
was to get a venomous snake.
So, to already have that
goal in the bag feels amazing.
Come here!
- Look, he can't hurt you at all.
- [Allison squealing]
- He can't hurt you at all. His head's completely gone.
- Oh, my God!
The only thing that can...
Yeah, the only thing that can
hurt you on a snake is his mouth.
- That's it.
- Dude, look at that blood.
And his mouth is gone.
Holy [bleep].
All right, you guys
ready? Hold on.
You get a Naked
and Afraid aptism.
- Ew! I thought you were gonna put it in my mouth!
- [Steven laughing]
You ready?
Yeah!
[laughs] That's savage!
Holy [bleep].
- Yeah!
- Yeah!
Snakes were one of
my biggest, biggest fears.
So to be so calm when
we were getting that,
I feel so proud of myself.
- Look at y'all, covered in venomous snake blood.
- [Allison] My lunch buddy.
You guys are [bleep] savages.
It's just such a special moment
to be able to share
this with two new people
that have never done
a challenge like this,
to overcome fears,
and to accomplish goals.
We did both of those things
with one chop of the knife.
We kind of need
to eat him quick.
We'll start a little fire.
We'll make a little lunch.
Here. Hold him up here.
There you go.
Field dressing this snake,
I couldn't help but
go back a decade
to my Alabama challenge.
This is the heart.
Literally, almost ten
years ago to the day,
uh, when I did the same
thing with the timber rattlers.
You know, I put the
still-beating heart in my mouth.
[Chalese] Whoo!
Dinner!
Look at the heart.
It's still beating a little bit.
Heart. 10-year anniversary.
- [Allison] Savage!
- 10 years, from Alabama to Kentucky.
That was just a cool, like,
full-circle moment for me.
[Allison] Dude, that
smells delicious.
As we're roasting it up,
the snake starts smelling
a little bit like bacon.
I already know it's
gonna taste so good.
Just from that smell.
[Jenny] What's this bit?
So this is, uh,
copperhead liver.
- Did you already take a... Yeah.
- Cheers.
Cheers.
First real protein.
[narrator] In addition
to a few tiny organs,
the only edible
meat of a copperhead
is the thin back strap
that runs along the spine.
That is so [bleep] good.
[Steven] Yeah.
[Allison] Split up
between three people,
it's really pretty small.
It's not giving us
too much nutrition.
But just the morale boost,
just the win of being
able to chew on meat
is absolutely amazing out here.
[Allison] Mmm!
[Steven laughs]
Are you not a fan?
[Jenny] I don't
eat meat at home,
so this is all very new to me.
But...
I know I need it, so
I'm gonna do it anyway.
I am feeling lethargic,
and I know that I do
need to have meat.
I did come out here
saying that I would
do anything I had to
to get through this challenge.
So I am willing to give it a go.
Just think of it as
nourishment for your body.
[Steven] Yeah. Essentials.
[Jenny] I have a
kink in my stomach.
It's just cramping up now.
I feel like I'm gonna throw up.
All I can taste is that
snake in my throat
and it's making
me feel super-sick.
[Steven] Gaggy?
[Jenny] I'm really struggling.
Every step I take
feels like I'm taking 20.
I feel like I'm gonna pass out.
Hold on. I might be sick.
I need to get it out.
No, I don't think it's
going to come yet.
- It's not really coming up.
- [Allison] [bleep], that's not fun.
I think we need to make
our way back to camp.
Yeah, I've just got no energy.
Mentally, because I know
that my body is
not how it should be,
it's maybe a bit
panic in my head
that's like I can't
deal with this.
My body feels rubbish,
so my mind feels rubbish.
Tomorrow's a new day.
[Steven] Tomorrow's a new day.
- Yeah.
- We're gonna get some good sleep tonight.
Let's just get today over
with and start again tomorrow.
[Steven] Just lay
down for a bit. I got this.
Are you sure?
I heard that.
I'm so sorry.
I just feel like I'm
keeping everyone awake.
No, but you gotta
just get some sleep,
even it's for, like, a
couple of hours, you know.
You're welcome.
Is this to go up?
- [Allison] Mmm-hmm.
- Cool.
[Allison] Oh, that's a big boy.
[Steven] That's a big boy.
[Allison] Dang!
We haven't seen any rain yet,
but I know we're
going to any day now.
And one of my biggest
concerns is being wet and cold,
so it is absolutely essential that we
get our firewood kind of stocked up.
Because whenever
it does storm here,
everything is going
to be soaking wet,
and it's going to be really hard to
maintain our fire when that happens.
[Jenny] Let me grab some.
So today we're gonna stockpile.
Get as much wood as we can.
Shelter it inside of our cave.
So we're gonna be
prepared when it rains.
- Sweet.
- [Jenny] My heart can't take this.
[Allison] Sit down
and rest again.
We don't have that
much more to bring up.
[Jenny] Is your
heart not pounding?
- [Allison] Little bit?
- [Jenny sighs]
[Allison] No, seriously, you
should... You should rest.
- You sure?
- [Allison] Yes. I'm absolutely positive.
We don't have
that much more left.
And I'm still feeling good.
And I don't want you to like
faint to coming up this hill.
[exhales]
Jenny, you okay?
[Jenny] My body just feels
like it wants to shut down on me.
Any amount of exertion
is just causing my heart
to beat so fast,
like so strongly
that I can even feel it
in my stomach,
not just my chest.
[Steven] I think Jenny's
biggest issue is fear.
I think fear, anxiety, stress.
All that stuff can
affect you physically,
but it can also
get in your head.
I feel like my muscles
are being eaten away at.
[Steven] And she has it
in her. She can do this.
But, you know, if
she can't handle that,
she's not going to make it.
[Jenny] This is like t*rture.
[Jenny] This is Day 7.
I am struggling today
to get through this challenge.
It takes mental strength,
and that's what I'm really
struggling with at the moment.
I just don't really think
I can do it anymore.
[sniffles]
You doing? Okay,
[sobbing]
I don't know what I should do.
I don't know if I
should stay or go.
[sobbing]
I just feel like If I go,
I'll be letting myself and
so many other people down.
Yeah.
But the mental part is
just so tough to get past.
- Yeah.
- [sniffles]
You need... I think, you
need to make the decision.
Either I'm going to
do this no matter what,
no matter how my feelings are.
You know, and not
focus on the finish line,
but focus on the journey.
You know, you've done
some amazing things,
and I think you can do
more amazing things.
But I... it literally
rips my heart out
to see how much pain
you're in when you wake up.
Yeah.
[tearfully] I'm gonna go.
[Steven] You sure?
Yeah.
- [Allison] Hey.
- [Jenny] Hey.
[Allison] What's going on?
I've decided, I'm gonna go.
- [Allison] Jenny.
- I know. I'm really sorry.
- No, don't be sorry.
- You don't need to be sorry.
- That's okay.
- I just feel that my mental state
is just such a roller coaster,
and I don't want to bring
that burden on you guys.
Every night I'm barely sleeping.
That's probably
contributing to my emotions
and my lack of energy,
and I just feel that
I've pushed myself
as far as I can go with that.
- [tearfully] But, thank you both for everything.
- [Steven] Come on.
- [sobbing]
- Yeah.
[Jenny] I know I'm leaving
here a stronger person
- than I came in, and that's an achievement.
- Yeah, you are.
- So I'm not left with nothing.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
I know you guys are going
to do really, really well.
And I'm...
Yeah. I'm really sorry.
[Allison] No, don't be sorry.
- [Steven] It's all right.
- We're gonna miss you.
You did an awesome job.
I really feel that I'm going
to have let people down.
I definitely couldn't
have got as far
as what I have done without
my husband Steven's training.
He definitely gave me all the
physical skills that I needed.
But I don't think he could
have ever prepared me
for the mental side of it.
You've faced so many
different challenges out here
that you can't really
imagine until you're
here facing them
and you know, that's when your
mental state starts to change.
You think you can
handle something,
but until it's right
there in front of you,
you can't honestly say
how you'll react to it.
I'm really proud of myself
and how far I've come,
but I just need to go home.
- Take care, Jenny.
- [Jenny] Thank you. Bye.
I will be so happy to never
hear a coyote ever again.
[Allison] Oh, man!
Ah, I know, I know.
I'm sad to see Jenny go.
I am 'cause...
because my main goal
is getting our team
across the finish line.
But you know, when people,
when they... when they
fully make up their mind
that this isn't
for them, that's it.
I mean, there's no
reopening that book.
That book is closed.
Me and you now.
Yeah, we are we... [chuckles]
Partner, okay.
I'm really sad to see Jenny go,
but I will say that Steven
and I make a phenomenal pair
when it comes to
survival out here.
So I feel confident that the next
days are gonna be a success.
- We've got two weeks.
- Mmm-hmm.
- To do some really epic, amazing stuff.
- Mmm-hmm.
We're gonna
absolutely m*rder it.
So the main plan out here
is when we do
this walk in stalk.
Because we're
going to be real quiet.
Really, I kind of want to
be like one with nature, so.
- Yeah.
- Eyes open, ears open,
constantly scanning
back and forth.
Mmm-hmm.
Just kind of when you...
when you step in the water,
I always do toes first.
And it won't splash.
[Allison] I feel like we've
had a really good thing
going on with our
cave camp here.
But not having eaten very
substantially since the snake
My muscles are starting
to feel a lot weaker
and I'm getting a
lot more fatigued,
and I'm feeling
like, I could really
use a good meal of some protein.
[Steven whispers] Holy [bleep]
Squirrel.
[exhales]
They're here.
I wonder if they're just
chilling out, like up top.
Just canopy squirrels all day.
[Allison] Mmm-hmm.
[Steven] Like, why
come down and grab nuts
when all your nuts are up there?
[Allison] I'm not seeing
anything out here.
I'm mostly looking
for turtles and snakes.
There's lots of underbrush
where both snakes and turtles
would like to hide.
So moving really slowly.
But so far, nothing.
Finding life out here has
been a little hard to come by.
So we've had to keep pushing
our journeys further and further.
And with how many
miles we're covering,
it's really taxing on the body,
especially when we already don't have
a lot of nutrients in our bodies already.
Nothing.
[Steven] At least I'm
hearing some birds.
God, you are way up there.
So they're right up there.
It's far.
[groans]
[exhales]
Got to keep going, though,
The main problem
with this area here is
there's no mammals,
there's no food sources.
Um, if there is, they're
few and far between.
So if there's no food
here, we need to move.
It's really the only way.
That we're going to
be able to even think
about putting adequate
food on the table for us
to not crawl across
the finish line.
Day 12.
This area definitely everything
is too few and far between.
[Allison] Yeah.
Like, let me know
what you're thinking
because I was
thinking this last night.
But we might,
need to do a migration.
Like... like, not have cave home?
[Steven] Yeah.
I know, I know it was scary.
That would be scary.
- I know.
- Would we migrate towards the pond?
We would be like
right at the pond, I think.
Hmm.
It being the biggest
water source in the area,
- like animals know that.
- [Allison] Mmm-hmm.
So that's going to be like a
thing of movement down there.
I mean, like, I feel like
we've had no rain at all,
and I feel like the like
the big rain is just
like it's gonna happen
- any [bleep] day, you know.
- I know. I know. I know.
And so I'm lik...
But I'm also thinking like
there are no food
resources here.
- Yeah, I want food.
- [Steven] I know. And we need food.
Like, you know,
this is like survival.
- I don't want to just get by.
- Yeah. Yeah.
Because the resources
here are so scarce.
We need to uplift ourselves
from our lovely cave.
Which kind of scares me.
Because here, if it rains,
we're going to stay dry.
But if we make our own
shelter, then chances are
if a big storm whips through,
we're going to get wet.
We're going to get cold.
And to me that is probably
like the worst scenario
for me out here
is being cold and wet.
[Steven] You know, there's
always a risk in leaving any location,
but we've got to put
ourselves in the best
food situation, too.
Yeah.
I am nervous, but
I'm done with that.
- Yeah.
- [Steven] Down with that?
Mmm-hmm.
[Steven] So I think that
would be a good game plan.
I know that it's a
concern for her,
but we have to change locations.
We have to get up
and we have to go
and we have to face our fears,
and we have to take the
rest of this adventure head on.
It's the only way
to thrive out here.
We don't have a choice.
-[Allison grunts] -[Steven]
All right. Slingshots.
Check.
Show me the blade.
[Allison] There you go.
[Steven] Cool.
It's moving day.
We're going to pick up shop
and head to the pond
to greener pastures.
[Allison] I'm gonna gather as
much of the the little pieces of tinder
that I can start a fire later.
[Steven] Perfect.
The location we're in
right now is not sustainable.
Being able to move
and have a new location.
And have less of
a human footprint
is going to improve
our chance for success.
It's going to improve our
chance to see more wildlife,
more natural resources.
And we're going
to thrive out there.
- All right.
- [Allison] All right.
Goodbye, home.
[narrator] Steven and Allison
will once again head north
almost three miles to
finally reach the pond,
Where they hope to secure
the protein they'll need
to trek another four miles west
to reach their 21-day
extraction point.
[Allison] This really is like
the first day all over again.
[Steven] Isn't it?
[thunderclap]
[Allison] Oh, my God,
it's freaking raining.
Of all the days
for it to start raining
today is kind of the
worst day possible.
[Steven] All right. We
gotta keep moving here.
[wind blowing]
[Steven exhales]
Man, are we good?
[Allison] Yeah.
It's cold, it's wet.
It's a long trek.
But we still are doubling
down on the idea
that this pond is
going to offer us
a lot better circumstances.
[Steven] Just keep going.
[Allison] Whoo!
It's chilly, man.
[Steven] Yeah,
this is definitely
the coldest, wettest
day that we've had.
[Allison] It's one thing
just making this trek.
It's another thing
doing it two weeks in
when you're sleep
deprived and hungry
and mentally, just a
little bit, not fully there.
So I'm beginning to doubt
our decision a little bit.
[Steven] I feel like we're in a whole
different environment right now.
[Allison] Yeah.
[Steven] I think we're gonna
have better luck out here.
[Allison] There's
the transitional areas
where little mammals like to be.
[Steven] Mmm-hmm.
Look at this.
- [Allison] Yey! We did it!
- [Steven laughs]
[Steven yells] Yey!
[Allison] It's a
nice, murky pond.
After trudging for miles,
we come up to the pond.
It feels amazing to
have gotten there.
But I definitely think it
looked a little different
than we had
envisioned in our mind.
It's a little more swampy
than we anticipated.
It's going to be really
challenging to use
that mosquito net
in this murky water.
[Steven] This has
been a long walk.
I'm pretty beat. I know you are.
[Allison] Yeah. We need
to find a nice level spot.
And start making our shelter.
- [Steven] Yeah.
- [Allison] Get water, get fire.
It's very wet.
[Steven] It took a lot
of work to get here.
We're wet, we're cold.
So we need to find a place
that we can set up our camp.
And then we can start a
fire and get a pot of water on
and get us heated up.
If we do from here,
from this tree to that tree,
and then we can
have our fire right there.
- Mmm-hmm.
- And then we can do our lean to this way.
- Okay.
- Does that work?
Yeah.
[Steven] I'll go get some water.
We'll start on fire first.
All right, let's get stuff done.
We got the clock ticking.
- Clock is ticking.
- Yeah.
[Steven] This is night
and day compared
to the Copperhead cave.
Just the fact that the canopy
is more open, more grasses.
All this points in
the direction to me
that there's going
to be more wildlife
and more wildlife
means more food.
[Allison] It's soaking wet.
It's cold, everything
is saturated.
This is what I was terrified of.
I'm mostly concerned
about night time.
And the cold temperatures.
So we got to build our shelter
and get our fire in order ASAP.
Tinder we brought from
the Copperhead cave.
It's uh, it's still dry,
which is pivotal.
Can use cat tails.
You usually split it like that.
All of this is like
King Tinder right here.
It's like cotton.
[Allison] I want to
see the fluff go poof.
[Steven] There's still a
lot of moisture in the air.
We're gonna make it work.
[Steven] Well, that
was uneventful.
All right, let's do it again.
Let's fluff it up
a little bit more
That way we'll get
more air in there.
This is a 100% humidity.
Everything's wet.
And it's a struggle.
I'm pulling out
every tip and trick
that I can think of in the book
to get this fire going.
And it is an uphill battle.
[Allison grunts]
[Steven grunts] Okay.
[Allison] The most
important thing
about survival is having fire.
What if we spend
tonight with no fire?
We are wet, completely soaked,
and we're going to
be absolutely freezing.
So if we can't get it,
uh, this challenge might
take a turn for the worst.
Oh. [grunts]
[Steven sighs] Ah! [bleep]
[thunder rumbling]
[scraping]
[Steven sighing impatiently]
Pine tree.
[thunder rumbling]
- You need to get some like the inner bark out.
- Yeah. Mmm-hmm.
[Allison] Yeah.
[Steven] Saturated with SAP,
has almost like
a turpentine in it,
and they should
be able to catch.
Try it one more time.
[thunder rumbling]
[Allison] Oh, wow. Beautiful.
Okay. Slowly, slowly.
We did it! Yeah. [sighs]
We did it.
Sure enough. We
got a little flame.
That was definitely
a big moment.
We're super dehydrated.
We traveled many miles.
We needed that fire.
- Okay.
- Let's get some bigger guys on you.
[Allison] In my mind, I was
already going through the thought
of what if we spend
tonight with no fire?
It's going to be horrible.
But we still don't
have a shelter.
So you think we should just
kind of forgo the shelter tonight,
focus on fire?
Yeah, the first
day, first night.
Like, I mean, we
gotta overfeed it.
[Allison] Yeah.
I think I might go
search for more firewood.
Definitely, I don't
want fire going out
in the middle of the night.
Okay.
[Allison] Not having a shelter
is definitely less than ideal,
and I'm not looking
forward to sleeping tonight
with nothing between
me and the earth.
[Steven] You cowboy
camped before right?
[Allison] I've never
done it on the dirt.
- Is that what cowboy camping is?
- Pretty much
- [Allison] Yeah.
- [Steven] Dirt and fire.
[Allison] This feels scary.
[Allison speaking]
[Steven speaking]
[Allison] They're crawling
all over you, too, right?
[Steven] Yeah.
- [Allison] See, they're just [bleep] everywhere.
- [Steven] Mmm-hmm.
[Allison] I'm really hoping
that this move pays off.
Like I've pulled, probably
like 50 ticks off of me
since getting here, and it's
freaking me out. Honestly.
Oh, my God, there's another one.
[in English]
It's everywhere.
[Steven] It sucks.
[Allison] Dude,
there's another one.
Oh, my God! They're
crawling all over me!
Get off of me!
- That was a long night.
- [Steven] Yeah.
Yeah.
[Allison] There's freakin ticks,
like crawling everywhere.
I could feel them on my skin.
Oh, God!
[Steven] Where was that one?
This big tic was
just in my scalp.
That's terrifying.
The ticks here are horrendous,
like the worst I've ever
seen in my entire life.
Mosquito net does not help.
The ticks are small enough
to just go right through.
I'm not happy
with the situation.
[Steven] Yeah.
[Allison] I'm really missing
what we had at our previous spot.
[Steven] I get
it. I totally get it.
But number one,
the priority today
is we're going to
get the shelter up.
- Yeah.
- [Steven] And then we're gonna ash this whole area
so all them creepy crawlies
are gonna be almost
down to nothing.
Yeah.
[Steven] Start the chop shop.
It's the realization
of basically
starting all over again,
three quarters of the
way through the challenge.
That's a... That's a
lot to kind of soak in.
So I can see her
kind of contemplating
that situation right now.
But once we get a shelter
up, we'll be doing just fine.
Yeah. There we go.
[grunts]
Nice
Pretty good binds.
We're gonna do a lean to.
We're gonna lay a latticework
with some small saplings,
basically interwoven
to make it really sturdy.
Look at this.
[Allison] Yeah,
it's looking good.
[Steven] When it
comes to debris shelters,
the more debris,
the better the shelter.
[Steven chuckles softly] Yeah.
Now, we're gonna
ash our entire area.
- [Allison] Okay.
- [Steven] All bugs hate ash.
They will literally flee.
[Allison] We got
the shelter done.
But I'm still not
feeling 100% confident.
Whenever we build a
makeshift shelter out here,
we simply don't have the
materials to make it waterproof.
Uh, this area. It does
have lots of thunderstorms
that roll in really quickly.
And I think that going forward,
primary concern is is
the cold and the rain.
[Steven] It's a
nice home, right?
[Allison] That'll do
the trick for now.
[Steven] I'm gonna go check
out the other side of that pond.
Looks like the
forest is younger,
so there might be
like more grasses.
- Mmm-hmm.
- [Steven] And more grasses
more little furry critters,
rabbits and squirrels
and stuff, so.
[Allison] Okay. I'll be
here collecting firewood.
[Steven] I am going
on my first hunt today.
I'm hoping to find
some mammal activities
because we need meat.
We need protein.
And um, I'm hoping
this area brings that.
You know, I always bring
the slingshot with me.
My main goals for this move
is to be able to utilize
my tool and find food.
So there's a lot of pressure.
[whispers] Let's
go on an adventure.
[grunts]
[Steven] I'm deep. I'm
deep in the forest right now.
Seems like this could
be like squirrel territory.
Squirrels and rabbits.
The problem is,
the grass is so tall.
It would be almost impossible
for me to see something.
I'm so determined
to get protein,
I'm willing to do anything
to make sure that happens.
I will not quit.
Keep going.
[Allison sighs wearily] Whoo!
Whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo. Whoo!
Jesus! It's starting to drizzle.
We do not have
enough firewood at all.
[thunder rumbling]
As much as I want to
just kind of hurdle up
in the fetal position
and wait it out,
I can't do that.
That's not an option.
I need to to get
this wood together.
I need to keep this fire going.
Just have to suck it up
and do what has to be done.
[Steven] Uh, it feels cold.
Cold and dark.
So that tells me that...
[in English]
Try to find a place
with a good cover.
Hunker down for a minute.
Let's see what happens.
[thunder rumbling]
I'm too deep into
the forest right now
to even think
about heading back.
I'm just gonna have
to shelter in place.
[thunderclap]
Here it comes.
[rain pattering]
Got to keep my chest dry.
Body tight.
Control my breathing.
Trying not to get hypothermia.
[Allison] It's really
coming down now.
I am feeling absolute panic.
[sobbing]
[thunderclap]
I really think Steven
really needs to come back.
[sniffles]
If fire goes out, then we
are in really big trouble.
We're going to be without water.
We're going to be with
out any time type of warmth.
[grunts]
[groans]
[thunder rumbling]
[rain pattering]
You know what? All this
wood is [bleep] soaking.
I don't even know what
[bleep] I'm doing right now.
This is
getting harder.
Hopefully, Steven
comes back soon.
[Steven] It's cold.
And it is dumping rain.
[thunderclap]
[Allison shouts] Steven!
Steven!
[thunderclap]
[rain pattering]
[Allison sighs]
Okay, rain's stopping.
We're good. We're good.
I'm trying to calm
myself down right now.
I've got the fire covered.
So it's still burning.
I'm underneath the shelter
and it is dripping
because it sucks.
[bleep]
Are you all right?
Mmm-hmm. Okay.
- [Steven panting]
- What did you discover?
I covered some...
I covered some miles for sure.
But no snakes,
no frogs, no turtles.
[Allison] Let's focus
on firewood and shelter.
Feels like this should have been
our number one priority today.
- [Steven] We can do that.
- [Allison] Okay.
[Steven] Good job
keeping the fire going.
[Allison] Thanks.
Allison. she looks so terrified.
But the fire is going and I
am so absolutely proud of her.
- I'll do firewood.
- Yeah.
- You work, shelter?
- Yeah.
- Divide and conquer.
- [Allison] Yeah.
I like it. It's a good plan.
[grunts]
I want to go out and find
food. That's what I want.
I think it'll
benefit both of us.
But if she's slowly
spiraling into a place
that she can't get out of.
That doesn't help me at all.
So if I need to put what I planned
on doing on the back burner
to make her and feel
as safe as possible
and stay in this,
then I'm going to do it.
[Allison] This is a
nice big magnolia tree.
So I've managed
to find a few nice big
magnolia trees out here
that have really big leaves.
Oh, yeah.
We could use to shingle
the top part of the shelter with.
This is absolutely a great find.
[sighs] Whoo!
I think if I shingle the leaves,
it's gonna help us
stay a lot more dry.
It'll allow the water
to kind of run off.
Instead of seep right
through the top of the shelter.
I'm just making the
best of the situation
at our new location.
[grunts]
[Steven] Is that a snake?
Oh!
Looks like we got a
turtle! [exclaiming in relief]
Look at this little guy.
[laughs] My goodness.
It's always funny when
you're looking for food,
a lot of times
you don't find it.
But when you're
not looking for it
and doing something
else, it tends to pop up.
So sure enough,
looking for firewood.
And what do I find?
A little box turtle.
We can get a
little bit of protein.
And just that morale boost,
especially after the rain.
Um, it's going to be huge.
[chuckling]
[bleep] Awesome.
[Steven sighing in exhaustion]
Good job!
[Allison] Feeling much
better about the shelter.
I feel like it's already
a lot more waterproof.
Check this out.
[Allison gasps]
- Oh, my God! You have a turtle!
- [Steven laughs]
Oh, my God! There's
a turtle in there.
- It's not just a shell, right?
- [Steven] No.
-[Steven laughs] -Okay.
You just brought up a shell
- to psyched me out.
- [Steven] No.
[Allison] Today has
been quite the day,
and we're weak.
You know, we haven't
eaten very much.
All right, so I
got a turtle here.
I got to dispatch her quick.
Just like that.
[Allison] So it's
really gonna be nice
to end the night on a high note,
and I'm kind of
stoked to try it out.
[Steven] Let's slow boil this
for about three or four hours.
Wham-bam!
You want to cheers a legend?
[Allison] Absolutely.
Mmm.
- Mmm. I'm like chewing so fast.
- Hmm.
[Allison] I can't help
it. My body is like
- so starving for nutrients right now.
- Hmm.
[Allison] You made a nice stew.
Uh, the broth was really warm
and comforting to
have right before bed.
So definitely would um,
definitely would
recommend turtle. [chuckles]
Thank you, turtle.
Yes. Thank you so much, turtle.
[thunder rumbles]
- Oh, man.
- [Steven] Oh, no.
[thunder rumbles]
- [rain pouring]
- [Alison groans]
Man, can't we catch a break?
It's kind of making
me a little nervous
how wet this is getting.
[thunder rumbles]
[Alison] [bleep] damnit.
All right. [bleep] got
crazy really quick.
We've got leaves over the fire.
[rain pouring]
It is pouring right now.
[Steven] It's bad news.
- [thunder rumbles]
- [Alison] Oh, my God.
Whoa.
- [rain pouring]
- It sucks.
-[thunder rumbles] -[Steven]
Fingers crossed it's quick.
[thunder rumbling]
- [wind blowing]
- [Alison groans]
Ah, that wind. [chuckles]
- [Steven] It's crazy.
- [Alison groans]
[thunder rumbles]
-[rain pouring] -Oh,
my God. It's so freezing.
[Steven speaking]
[Alison speaking]
[thunder rumbles]
[Steven speaking]
[thunderclap]
[Alison speaking]
[thunder rumbles]
[thunderclap]
[Alison speaking]
- [rain pouring]
- [Alison speaking]
[Alison groans]
[thunderclap]
[birds chirping]
[Steven] Last night was rough.
It was straight up Zeus,
like, opening up
the clouds of doom.
[Alison] Yeah,
I'd say last night
was the toughest
night I've had out here.
[Steven] It was bad.
As far as sheer rain magnitude
in such a short period
of time, this is top three
in my 250-plus days
all around the world,
so that says something.
[thunderclap]
It's cold. Temperature
drops 20 degrees.
- [thunder rumbles]
- [Steven groans]
- [rain pouring]
- Survival, man.
- It's real. It's the real deal.
- [rain pouring]
[thunder rumbles]
Freaking Alaska, man.
-[rain pouring] -[Laura]
It is pouring right now.
- [Steven] It is dumping right now.
- [Laura] Oh, God.
[rain pouring]
It was scary, you know.
I feel like my body is
just kind of shutting down,
and it's, like, really hard
to keep any kind of warmth.
Last night was terrifying.
I could see that Steven
kind of switched modes
and became really focused,
and I could see a little bit
of fear in his eyes as well.
He did everything he
could to keep the fire going.
I hope that that was the low
point for this challenge. [chuckles]
I don't know if I can
take another one.
So, I really wanna put
the mosquito net to use
and catch some
fish in that pond.
- We've got the turtle guts for some bait.
- Yeah, turtle guts.
What I wanna try
is getting a stick
- with like a Y at the top...
- Okay.
And kind of
turning it into a hoop
- and making...
- Like a dip net?
- [Alison] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- Okay. Yeah.
- I think that'll work great.
- Cool.
[machete tapping]
It was definitely
a nice pick-me-up
to have something in my stomach
with the turtle
stew that we made,
but it was nowhere near
as substantial of a meal
as I need at this point.
- [branch cracks]
- [Steven] There you go.
I do not feel like this
move has paid off yet.
Once we catch some food,
like a substantial
amount of food,
then I think I'll feel like this
was a worthwhile decision.
This is the wide portion,
- and then the net can go in between.
- [Steven] I like that.
We found a big Y branch
and we lashed a
sapling across the top,
so it's basically a triangle.
After that, we were
able to tie and weave
the mosquito net
through that triangle,
which literally just makes
a big old dip scoop net.
All right, so we
got our turtle guts.
[Alison] Nasty.
[Steven] We use part of the
mosquito net as a little chum bag.
Basically, guts of an animal that are
immersed in the water leaves a set trail
and predatory fish
come to investigate.
[Alison] It's gonna
get us some food.
[birds chirping]
- All right, it's all the way down.
- [Steven] Okay.
Alison's in the water
with the dip net.
I'm a little bit above,
which gives me the
opportunity to see the fish.
So what I'm gonna
do is, when the fish
get into the zone of the net,
I'm gonna tell her to lift up,
and hopefully we can get
a couple of these big boys.
There's two of
them to your right.
There's three of them.
[Alison] Yeah, I can't
see anything right now.
The water is like glass.
I thought this was
gonna be easy.
[Steven chuckles]
Fishing never is.
There's no free
rides in survival.
I can't really see
nothing right now.
[birds chirping]
There's some big bass.
Here comes one.
Looking at the net.
Stay still.
[Alison] It's getting really
hard to be able to hold still.
My muscles are
beginning to shake,
it's really beginning to get
really hard to just stay put,
and I feel like any movement
is scaring away the fish.
So I'm getting really
frustrated with this.
[Steven] About a foot away.
Here it comes.
Lift!
[Alison grunts]
Yeah. I can't lift it.
[grunts] It's the weight of it.
There's nothing in there, right?
- [Steven] No.
- [Alison groans]
[Alison] I don't
know about this.
[Steven] Day's almost done.
The sun's kind of behind
the canopy right now.
- You wanna call it?
- [Alison] Yeah.
At least we tried.
[Steven] The net
is a great idea.
We are so close to being
able to utilize this new asset,
but it's not gonna work.
So I'm gonna have to
switch some tactics here.
[Alison] Oh, my
God, it looks so dark.
- [fire crackling]
- [Alison groans]
[Alison] Does it seem to be getting
colder tonight, or it was just me?
[Steven] Mmm-hmm.
It is [bleep] cold.
-[wind blowing] -The
weather changes here
between the torrential rain
and then this, like, frozen
tundra that's going on.
It is surreal.
Like, I've been to Alaska,
Louisiana in December.
Oh, my God. Frozen body.
[Steven exhales]
I can't stop shivering.
It's just k*lling me.
It is cold outside.
When I say cold,
like, it is frozen.
- It's cold.
- It is so cold.
It is definitely the coldest
night out here by far.
[Alison groans]
Oh, my God.
[Steven] It is freezing.
[wind howling]
[birds tweeting]
[Alison] Last night sucked.
[Steven] It was [bleep] cold.
[Alison] Cold is
really intolerable.
[Steven] Tough few days.
- [twig snaps]
- Tough few days.
I'm beginning to reach a
breaking point out here,
physically and mentally.
It just seems like,
since getting to this spot,
it's, like, been like,
and all the things,
[chuckles] all the challenges,
like, one after another.
Like, yeah.
As I've gotten more
deprived of nutrients,
my cold tolerance
is just plummeting,
and I'm getting really
cold really easily.
[tearfully] I just
wanna be myself again.
- I know.
- [crying]
- I know you do. I know.
- [crying]
[Steven] We really need protein,
especially coming
to the end here,
'cause we have extraction.
Extraction's not easy.
Not to mention, kind of,
boost our morale a little bit.
I'll figure something out
to try to get some food.
[birds tweeting]
I'm trying to think
on how to best
utilize this situation.
It's been days since
we had that turtle,
and turtle's not a
whole lot of protein.
Our biggest source of protein
is gonna be in this
pond over here.
There's fish. But the net,
it's just not gonna cut it.
But I do have a
slingshot that I can modify,
and what I'm gonna do is I'm
actually gonna turn it into a bow sling.
I'm gonna be able to sh**t
arrows with my slingshot
and spear a fish from the bank.
So that's the goal today.
[bird screeches]
I've never modified
my slingshot like this,
but I think it's doable.
So, I'm gonna make an arrow.
I got a pine sapling.
It's fresh, so it's
kind of malleable.
Okay, you wanna
super fire-harden the tip.
That way, you get
maximum penetration power.
I'm attaching my arrow guide
where my arrow's gonna sit,
so when I pull it back,
it goes in a straight line.
[Alison] Yeah, I've
been pretty hungry today.
You know, if we could get at
least one solid good meal in,
that'll give us enough energy
to really push
through to the end.
Absolutely.
You're gonna rock it
with your slingshot, so...
[birds chirping]
There's four bass right there.
[birds tweeting]
[whispers] Come
on up. Come on up.
[arrow whooshes]
[Steven exhales]
[Steven speaking]
[Alison] I'm definitely impressed
by Steven's persistence.
If Steven gets a fish today,
it'll be so freaking incredible
to have a little bit
of nourishment.
I know that'll do wonders
for my mind and my body.
I'm just so weak and so tired.
I'm still feeling like it's
the end of a marathon
and my body is
really trying its best.
I'm so hungry.
Two more days. It seems so long.
- [arrow whooshes]
- [Steven whispers] Damn it!
Come on back to me.
Since we moved to the pond here,
it threw problems at
me that I didn't expect.
I expected more food
sources, protein sources,
and it's just not happening.
- [arrow whooshes]
- Oh!
Even after doing
this for 10 years,
the cold, the wet, the
hunger, it still hurts.
And it put me in my place.
I mean, have you
ever seen a king crawl?
It's about to get to that point.
[arrow whooshes]
[Steven exhales]
This arrow's way more
buoyant than a typical fish arrow,
so it's gonna wanna
glide upwards.
That's a problem.
[exhales]
It's concerning.
I'm gonna have to
make some modifications.
By taking off about an eighth
of an inch all the way around it,
which means the arrow's
gonna move faster,
so if it does hit a fish,
it's gonna get more penetration,
and not only that,
it's gonna cut through
the water better,
instead of getting
that kind of updraft.
We're gonna try to make it work.
[Alison] Just a few
adjustments and you'll get it.
[Steven] Hopefully.
Right. [grunts] Let's do it.
I see one right there.
[arrow whooshes]
Oh, my God, I was
right [bleep] in there.
We're running out of time.
We have an extraction.
Extraction's hard work.
We do need a good protein score
to really cross that
finish line strong.
- [arrow whooshes]
- Gosh. Centimeters!
Feeling good
about the new arrow.
Every shot I take, I'm
just a little bit closer.
- [arrow whooshes]
- Ooh!
I am literally knocking
scales off these puppies.
Ooh, there's a fatty.
- [arrow whooshes]
- [bleep]
- [water splashing]
- [Steven exhales]
Oh, my God.
[Alison] Today, I dug
up some sassafras roots,
and those roots have
antiseptic properties.
So, my idea is to
boil down the roots,
making a sort of mouth rinse
to k*ll some
bacteria in my mouth.
Ready for some mouth refresh?
[Steven] Yeah, a little
sassafras mouthwash.
[Alison washes mouth out]
[gurgling]
[both spitting]
Whoa, that was dark.
But it does feel less,
like, mouth furry...
- [Alison] Yeah.
- You know?
- Are we gonna breathe on each other's faces?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, yeah. You first.
- Come...
- [breathes out]
- [laughs]
- Wow. The sass works.
- Very sassy.
[Steven] Sass, coming
to a store near you.
[Steven exhales]
[arrow whooshes]
[Steven grunts]
[Steven exhales]
[exclaims] Yeah!
- Whoo!
- Oh, my God, did you get fish?
[Steven yells] I got it!
[exclaims] Yes!
Whoo! Yeah!
[laughing] Oh, my God.
To pull him out of the water
and see him on that arrow,
after putting in so much work,
and thinking outside the box,
and using an item for a completely
different reason than I brought it here for,
that's why I love
this challenge, man.
[Alison] Oh, my God.
- I'm so proud of you. That's awesome.
- [Steven] Thanks, babe.
We haven't had a
full mouthful of food
since the start of the
challenge out here,
and this last week has really
just put me through the wringer.
We're gonna have dinner,
and I can't freaking wait.
[Steven grunts] All right.
[fire crackling]
[Alison] This is just...
It makes everything
so much better,
especially so
close to us leaving.
Freshly speared largemouth bass,
- slow roasted.
- [Alison] I'm so thankful.
[Steven] Mmm.
Oh, my God. I have
a full mouth of meat.
It's not like little nibbles.
- It's a full bite.
- [Steven] I know. It's a real full bite.
Oh, my God.
And the fact that
Steven got this fish today
is just the best possible
scenario for Day 19.
I'm so grateful,
King stuff right here.
- [Alison chuckles]
- Kind of a big deal.
I've been telling you
guys for 10 years.
[chuckling] This is the best.
Thank you.
[birds tweeting]
[Steven] Pretty much
the end of day 20.
Are you worried about
extraction at all tomorrow?
[Alison] I'm really excited,
but, like, really anxious.
I know that we're gonna have,
you know, quite a trek tomorrow.
It's really gonna be the pain.
[Steven] We'll take
our time. We'll do it safe.
The last thing we
wanna do is get jacked up
walking to the finish line.
Let's hydrate.
Let's get some rest.
Extraction's no joke.
You can get hurt on
the way out of here.
We need to make sure
we're coherent, rested,
and hydrated to the max.
If not, we won't
finish this challenge.
Last time we're
sleeping in the dirt.
[Alison] Yes, thank God.
[Steven] And it is
officially extraction day.
Let's check the
map one more time.
- Pond...
- Pond right here.
So we're, like, right here at the
end of the pond, tip of the pond.
Basically, go down this gully
and then we gotta
go up this ridge,
and then extraction
should be right up here.
Yeah.
It's gonna be intense
going up that ridge,
- but we got it. We got it.
- We got it.
My body has really gone
through the ringer out here,
and it's been
feeling very fatigued.
- You ready?
- I'm ready.
- [Steven] All right, let's do it.
- [steam hisses]
[Alison] I know this hike
is gonna be challenging,
but every long journey
starts with a single step.
All right, shelter.
It's been real, but it
hasn't been real fun.
- [Steven] Yep. Preach.
- [Alison] We're out.
[narrator] To reach
their extraction point,
Steven and Alison must
head four miles west,
navigating through the
thick, thorn-filled forest
and dry riverbeds covered
in razor sharp shale rock,
before a final punishing climb
of over 300 feet in elevation
to meet their rescue vehicle
on an abandoned fire road.
Keep an eye out for snakes.
This is when they're
all cold and dormant,
so you won't know
until you step on them.
This is my eighth extraction,
and it's always difficult.
- Oh, my God.
- [Laura] Ooh, that's cold!
[Steven] Ooh, man,
I'm hungry and I'm tired.
[Chalese gasps] Ow! Ooh!
[Steven gasps] Ow! [bleep]
The hardest part is
you wanna go quick
because you want it to be over,
you wanna cross
that finish line,
but when you move
fast, you make mistakes.
- Every step, one step closer.
- [Alison] Yeah.
[Steven] Twisted
ankles, slip and falls.
That can take you out of
the challenge on day 21.
So we do have to take it slow.
We have to take
it a step at a time.
- We're doing good, though.
- [Alison] Mmm-hmm.
[Steven grunts] Ow.
- [Alison] Are you good?
- [Steven] Yeah. Thorn.
Be careful over here
with this elevation grade.
[Alison] Yeah, it's
getting really steep now.
[Steven] Yeah. Yeah, this is
where slip and falls happens.
[Alison] It's really
starting to get pretty steep,
and I can feel my quads
already starting to shake.
Watch out. There's
literally like a cliff right there.
[Alison] Yeah.
This hike is
absolutely terrifying.
[birds chirping]
[Steven] Ooh, it's
deeper than it looks.
These shale rocks are
m*rder on the feet for sure.
This creek is absolutely
inundated with shale rock.
Sharp, blistering,
razor-edge-type blades of rock.
- Ooh.
- [Alison] Slippery.
[Steven] This is one of those
where you slip on some moss
and you can just cut
yourself open real bad.
It honestly feels like
you're walking on LEGOs
and glass and lava
rock all at the same time.
And one wrong move, and fall,
you can cut yourself,
and that's the end,
and we don't even
make it to extraction.
I'm thinking if we keep on
going down here a little bit more,
- that we can start making our way up.
- Yeah.
Oh, man.
Jeez, look how steep that is.
- [Steven] I'm getting pretty tired.
- [Alison] Yeah.
Yeah, my heart's
starting to race, for sure.
Going uphill,
I've never had to traverse
something so dangerous
while being so weak in my body.
Oh, my God, my legs.
They wanna give out on me.
[Alison sighs]
[Steven] This is crazy slippery.
[Alison exhales]
[Alison] It looks like it
might level out up here.
[Steven] It's looking like it.
[Alison] Oh, my
God, is this a road?
- [Steven] Is this a real road?
- [Alison] Oh, my gosh.
It's a freaking road! [chuckles]
- [Steven] This has gotta be it.
- [Alison] Do you hear that?
[engine humming]
- This is it. This is...
- Oh, my God, there it is!
- [Steven laughing]
- [Alison cheers]
[both shrieking]
[Alison yells] Yes!
[Alison exclaims]
Oh, my God.
I am so freaking excited
that I finished the biggest
challenge of my entire life.
I am on top of the world.
- Oh, my God!
- [Steven] This is it.
- Oh, I've never been so happy.
- [Steven] Oh, my God.
[Alison] There's been
things that have really deeply
scared me about being out here.
Being so uncomfortable
with the cold and the rain,
and sleeping on the dirt,
and the mental challenges
of just being on this
roller coaster of emotions.
I've endured a lot,
and I am so deserving
of the finish line.
-We did! [shrieks] -We
did it, baby! [laughing]
- Whoo!
- Whoo!
[narrator] Over the
course of 21 days,
Alison lost 20 pounds.
Her primitive survival
rating rises from a 6.4 to 7.4.
- Whoo!
- Whoo! [laughing]
- Another one down!
- We did it!
- [Steven] 21 days, baby.
- Yes!
[Steven] Sharing this experience
with Alison for her first 21 day,
I can't help but reminisce,
and I can't help get that
same emotion I get every time.
- There it is!
- [Chalese] Whoo!
Oh, my God!
I'm Steven Lee Hall
Jr. I'm kind of a big deal.
[yells] Yeah!
Oh, my God, I can't
believe we did it.
It's a level of love and
admiration, disbelief, pride.
- What a freaking adventure, dude.
- [laughing]
- See ya!
- [all cheering]
It's a cornucopia of
emotions that you can't even...
You can't even describe.
- [yells] Yeah!
- [woman] Oh, we're getting out.
[Steven] That's right, Africa!
Whoo!
[both laughing]
- Give me a hug.
- Oh, my God.
- [Steven] Oh, my God.
- Oh...
And to be able to
experience that with Alison...
- Whoo!
- Whoo!
[Steven] ...it
rejuvenates my spirit.
It reminds me how
special this challenge is
and what it does
to change people.
[narrator] Completing
his eighth challenge,
Steven lost 27 pounds.
His PSR rises from 9.3 to 9.7.
[Steven] Another 21!
[Alison] Yeah, baby!
- Checkmark. You're welcome.
- Heck, yes.
All hail the king.
I officially have 272 days
with zero tap outs
on aked and Afraid.
That officially makes
me the one person
who has accomplished more days
than anyone on
the entire planet,
and if that doesn't scream
King, I don't know what does.
- We did it!
- Yeah! Whoo!
- See you later, Kentucky!
- [Alison laughing]
