with another veteran's kid.

I have no idea who.

I'm seeing a lot of forest.

It's really beautiful, but
desolate, nonetheless.

[julia] this jungle is
definitely intimidating.

Not something to be messed with.

This is gonna be my future for
the next two weeks of my life.

It's getting real. It's
really getting real here.

[waylon] my confidence level is
about as high as it's ever been,

Now that I'm seeing
the environments.

So, I'm ready to do it.

I would describe myself as

Happy-go-lucky,
driven, and head strong.

And if I just have the right attitude, I
can get through just about anything.

It is very important
that I make it through.

Not only so I can approach my
dad as an equal from now on,

But just for my own pride.

When I think of advice
that my dad has given me,

"you're gonna be miserable, so
you might as well get used to it."

Being here with the kid of a
veteran is giving me some comfort.

I'm not gonna be
looking back one bit.

I'd say one of the biggest
misconceptions about me is that,

tough mentality

And that's one of the biggest
things that can get you through this.

My mom is very
outspoken type of person,

But I'm exact opposite.

Cool, calm, and collected.

I'm really just gonna try and keep a positive
attitude like my mom's been telling me to.

I know I'm gonna k*ll
it and I'm ready for it.

In santa rosa, mexico.

In this dramatic,
highland rainforest,

They will endure
crushing humidity,

Relentless fire ants,

And have to stay vigilant
for pumas and jaguars

That use their
supreme night vision

To stalk and k*ll their prey.

The dense jungle is also
the perfect hunting ground

For one of the most
deadly vipers on earth,

The fer-de-lance.

Just another Tuesday.

Being naked isn't
really a thing to me.

There's less tight
things on you.

It's more comfortable.

I am sweating.

It's my favorite outfit.

Some traits I would not be
able to stand in a partner,

Is they were lazy, and...

Oh, my god, please

These [bleep] ants, man.

k*lling me.

learnt survival skills

Such as hunting and fire
building from his father.

Julia is resilient,
like her mother.

She also has experience
making traps and snares.

And while they both
have the stamina of youth,

They both lack body fat,

Which could become
a distinct disadvantage

If they struggle to source food.

They both begin with the
same primitive survival rating

go down to the jungle.

It's just looking
like a snake cave.

Yeah. Looks like there's some
resources over here that we gotta get to.

Yeah, looks like a there's a river
between us and them, though.

Well, no time like the present.

hike three miles towards the delta.

Heavy rains up river
can cause it to flash flood,

Rising several
feet within minutes.

And it's raging currents and
multiple hundred foot waterfalls,

Make it treacherous to navigate.

So, what's your deal?

You got any plans for
school or anything like that?

Honestly, I have no idea
what I wanna do with my life.

I graduated two years
ago from high school

And one of the biggest
reasons to take on this challenge,

Is to figure out what I actually
wanna do after I get out of here.

Did you just graduate?

So, I'm actually missing
classes to be here right now.

My last class
actually, of college.

this worthwhile then.

Me and waylon definitely have
kind of the same sense of humor.

So, I'm really looking forward
to doing this challenge with him.

So, it's a little more

It's definitely getting thicker.

This is an interesting

And we have access to

The only thing I'm worried
about up here is snakes.

the deadly fer-de-lance,

Santa rosa is also home
to the mexican moccasin,

A highly dangerous pit viper

That nests in the
crevices of caves.

It's long hinged fangs
can deliver a fatal bite,

k*lling an adult
human within hours.

I'm fine with just
sleeping on the floor.

I dunno about you.

I'm fine with that.

But this was washed up here
by the river. It didn't just get here.

I don't wanna be in here
when that water comes up.

Yeah, I understand the concern.

I am scared of
staying in this cave,

Because of my mom's experiences of
flash flooding in the middle of the night.

All right, we do also have to
keep in mind, the time constraints.

That is true.

'cause we are going to rapidly run
out of day here in the next few hours.

Julia seems really scared of
places that could potentially flood,

But it's dry.

So, I can't just ignore that.

We can get something
going down here.

Well, I'm gonna go see if I
can't get a little fuego started.

Pretty good at fire?

Yeah, my dad actually taught me.

So, while waylon is working on
the fire, I decided to go and, get

Firewood, firewood, firewood.

'cause I'm not going cold.

Just picking up stuff like cordage
and any fire materials that we can use.

I'll be honest.

Time is not exactly looking
like it's on our side right now.

Sun is quickly going down.

I'm getting nervous.

It's just so damn
moist out here.

It's scary

Thinking that someone else
is relying on you to start a fire

And what if you can't do it.

Hell yeah.

Hold up, I need help with this.

And then that was it.

When you like finally
get a go and you're like,

I've been travelling around
every corner of this fire

And I cannot seem to find
one semi-comfortable place

To catch some shut-eye.

My leg muscles keep cramping

Whenever I bend my legs.

It's terrible to try
and sleep with.

am after the first night.

So, she was very supportive.

I'm hoping for a good
night's sleep tonight.

And if I can just
make it to that next day

cave didn't flood...

And we did run out of firewood.

So, I'm trying to,
get some dry wood.

I'm a little worried
about waylon.

I hope I can help

Keep in the right head
space while we're out here.

use the pit for bait.

These berries taste

Not that great.

They kinda taste
like, chalky citrus.

But nonetheless, it is calories.

Specially with
the hunger factor,

Anything is food

And our stomachs are
pretty happy with us.

I hope these don't

tacos in one sitting

my firewood scavenge

has dinner ready.

It is the most delightful thing.

The toad has some meaty,

Just because of the toxins
that can be in their skin.

I think we're doing better
than both of our parents did

On their first challenge.

I think we got pretty lucky

With how things

My coping strategy

It's really looking
like a great spot

best spot to catch fish.

So, I'm making a line

bring it in like a heart.

Make like a trap pool

So the fish don't
know how to get out.

They come in and they can't,

They can' leave.

I think this is a,
pretty decent trap

And hopefully we
can get some fish.

squirts a few hours ago.

Since then the nausea

Kinda went away
a little bit as well.

There's no more of
those little orange fruits.

There's no real reliable
food sources around here

But, we haven't seen
a fresh supply yet

Which probably means
that we can't rely on them

time we're here.

It's pretty clear that
there's nothing in there.

I might have to
think something new.

coming out. It's still burning.

But, I feel like if anything
would have popped out,

This one is a task
failed scenario.

Really wanted some meat tonight.

[julia] since the fish trap
didn't work out for me

I'm gonna try something on land.

Thinking I'm gonna
make a paiute deadfall

Which is kinda
like a figure four

But you use cordage instead.

So, it's easier to trip

And faster to slam
down on your catch.

Gonna tie some
cordage right here

With a toggle stick.

And then, the rock on this side.

When the animal comes,

Hits the trigger
stick, this all falls.

My body is feeling
absolutely terrible.

Every day the challenge
just gets harder.

You've got a few less
calories to work with,

And your ability to function just
nose dives after a certain point.

My mom's words are ringing in my
head about how hard this challenge is.

My mind is just exhausted.

We gotta get some food soon.

I'm really getting frustrated.

something with any protein in it.

It's getting really rough.

for making this far.

We've made it nine days in the middle
of bum [bleep] nowhere with minimal food.

I don't know what

My plan now is to
just build a shelter.

It's essentially just gonna be a
wind break for us and the fire.

A-framed with only one side.

Protective qualities.

To reach their extraction point

Near a 130 foot waterfall.

I haven't eaten much
for about 14 days.

But I've been ready to go

Since really day one.

some college classes

And starting a career.

to do this challenge

To prove to my mom
she's not the only badass.

But you really do have
to be a badass to do this

And mentally I've really grown,

And I can really appreciate
that for the rest of my life.
