Here's my front yard.
I cannot believe
I'm gonna be going
from the concrete
jungle to the actual jungle,
or, in this case, desert.
I am definitely a city girl,
but I am so excited
to get into nature.
[horn blaring]
And, like, be in a
beautiful place that's serene
and have the sounds
of animals and wildlife
be what, what wakes me
up in the middle of the night
instead of trash truck
outside of my window.
[Chev] Welcome to the city
of Yonkers, my hometown.
Yep, I'm very excited.
Yonkers is, you know,
a concrete jungle.
Everywhere you
look, there's danger.
You just gotta keep
moving through all of that.
So, I've been surviving
since I was born.
City people can
survive anywhere,
and that's what I
intend to do for 14 days.
[Elsa] I am just
a fan of the show.
I am not a
life-long survivalist.
That is so smart.
It's, like, gorgeous, light,
little flip flops she just made.
But I am totally ready
to take on this challenge.
I've never been more ready.
[Chev] Hold on.
Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
You can see the
smile on my face.
I might not be smiling out
there after a week or so,
or two weeks, but definitely
looking forward to this trip.
I'm so excited.
[narrator] Vanderkloof,
South Africa.
The unforgiving
savannah landscape
sits atop an enormous plateau,
over 1,500 feet above sea level.
It is fed by a giant
reservoir of water,
which brings both
predator and prey
to drink from its shores.
The scorching sun can send daytime
temp soaring into the hundreds,
while thunderstorms rip through
the terrain at a moment's notice,
plunging temperatures
into the low 40s.
[Chev] This is definitely
not New York anymore.
We don't have rhinos in New
York, we have them out here.
Feeling good.
Oh, wow.
This is the first time I've
ever seen a rhino in person.
This is so magical.
He's so cute and beautiful.
[narrator] Vanderkloof is home
to 5,000-pound white rhinos,
leopards and the
African buffalo,
a 1,400-pound behemoth
responsible for over 200 deaths a year.
I see some buffalo up there.
Very unpredictable.
We gotta make sure
we're staying clear of them.
They're the black death.
They will take you out.
This really is just
a measuring stick.
When the chips are down, what are
you gonna do, how would you react?
That's really what
it comes down to.
So that's really why
I'm doing this challenge,
to help me get
to the next level.
I am so excited to get naked.
It's where I'm meant to be.
Freedom! Finally!
I absolutely love being naked.
I am pretty much
nude all the time.
And so I think that that's
the one part of this experience
that's gonna be
super easy for me.
All right. Here goes nothing.
[Chev] Yeah. It's
time to get naked.
Adding the nudity to
the survivor situation
is a little out there, you know?
As you're surviving, you're
looking to shelter yourself,
you're not looking to be naked.
Ah. There's nothing like feeling
the earth beneath you as you walk.
It's really an
incredible experience.
[Chev] I'm naked,
[chuckles] I'm in Africa,
it feels damn good.
-Hi. -[Chev] Hey. How are you?
- [Elsa] Good. How are you?
- Very good, very good.
- Nice to meet you.
- Good to finally meet you.
[Chev] Me, too. Yeah.
- I'm Elsa.
- I'm Chev.
- Chev?
- Yes.
- Okay, okay.
- It's short for "Chevon."
[Elsa] Okay, cool.
-Yeah, it's... -Chev-Elsa,
I love that name.
- Chev-Elsa.
- Yeah!
- Whoo-hoo!
- We're gonna do it.
- Where are you coming from? Where are you from?
- I'm coming from New York.
- Really?
- Yeah.
Me, too. I live in Brooklyn.
I used to live in Brooklyn,
but I'm in Yonkers now.
Is this not the weirdest thing?
Like, being out here in a complete
opposite environment than...
Yeah. I'm looking forward to
bringing a lot of the, the city smarts,
- the street smarts into, like, here.
- Yeah. Exactly.
And, you know, all the
awareness that you have to have.
It's insane, we're
both from New York.
I think we have a certain
amount of street skills
that come with living
in New York, especially.
So I think we'll both be pretty
good at thinking on the spot.
- What are your skills?
- Um, my skills are
I can keep a, a fire.
I was 13 years old
when I moved to Yonkers,
and it was definitely
a big culture shock.
But when I was
and it really brought me back
to my love for being outside.
I'm a sea kayaker, naturalist,
I'm just an outdoorsman.
The skills that I'm bringing is
shelter building, finding water.
Whatever I put my
mind to, I get it done.
[narrator] Chev's street smarts
and experience as a kayaker
give him the grit
he needs to survive,
but he's never experienced
the African bush.
He begins with a Primitive
Survival Rating, or PSR of 5.8.
What do you think
some of your skills are?
I like to think I have a
pretty decent mental attitude.
I meditate every day,
so I hope you don't mind.
That's, like, my main thing.
[photographer] Beautiful. [Elsa] I'm a
nude-in-nature artist and photographer.
My strengths include being
extremely hard working,
very passionate about
being naked in nature.
You know, I love making fires.
I'm really excited
to practice the traps.
I'm doing this challenge to
conquer my fears about death,
about my existence.
Face those questions head-on,
and hopefully get
some of the answers.
I think you're gonna really
find yourself down there,
and come back
transformed and reborn.
- Mmm.
- Afraid of death no more.
I'm so excited.
- Yeah.
- I'm feeling pretty confident.
[narrator] Elsa has
never had to survive
without the comforts
of civilization,
but her experience of
thinking creatively in nature
and her enthusiasm
give her an edge.
She begins with a PSR of 5.4.
- Do me one favor.
- Mmm-hmm.
- Do not let me tap. No matter what.
- Same.
- Okay. Perfect.
- All right?
- Yeah. Perfect. High five. Thank you. Yeah.
- There you go.
- Do not!
- I'm so happy. Likewise.
- All right.
- We're staying until the end together.
Until the end together.
- [Elsa] Want to check out our bags...
- Mmm-hmm.
- And we'll take it from there.
- Yeah. I'm with that.
[narrator] Chev and Elsa have
each brought a personal item,
- a machete...
- [Chev] It's a machete.
And a fishing line with hooks.
They have also been given a
fire starter and a pot to boil water.
[Elsa] And it looks like
I have the map here.
- Okay.
- Okay, well, we are here.
[Chev] Water source is
here, and we are here.
This looks like it's
gonna be a steep drop off,
- so we wanna get down the hill...
- Mmm-hmm.
And come up through the valley,
and make our way
to the water source,
- and figure out where we're gonna camp.
- [Elsa] Yeah.
Just need to be really careful.
- You know, the puff adders, white rhinos.
- Mmm-hmm.
[Elsa] The scorpions
and buffalos.
Just be really careful
when we're walking about.
- [Chev] Yeah. Stay aware, you know?
- Exactly.
- Let's do this.
- Yeah, let's do it.
- Ready? All right.
- Awesome. Yes, all ready.
All right, here we go.
This terrain is
super unforgiving.
Like, we really need to be a
mountain goat or something.
Like, one wrong step,
- you know, game's over.
- [Chev] Super tight, you know?
But I also see a lot of
cracks and openings.
- [Elsa] Yeah.
- And that's usually where snakes are hanging out.
- [Elsa] Totally.
- And I'm not interested
in playing any games
with any of that right now.
- [Elsa] I feel you.
- So... I'm coming through.
[Elsa] Getting a lot of
thorns in my feet right now.
- [Chev] Ah.
- Not fun.
[Chev] Take your time.
[Elsa] Did people
ever call you a hippie,
'cause you like
nature and stuff?
[Chev] No, I'm not
a hippie, I'm a Rasta.
[Elsa] Like, does that
just basically mean
that you're from
Jamaica, or like...
-No. -What does that entail?
[Chev] It entails a way of life.
Just love and caring for people,
- the environment, community, animals.
- [Elsa] Oh, cool.
I feel like that's just,
kind of, how I live my life
and my belief system.
But I'm all about
just, kind of, like,
one world, one love, peace.
- [Chev] That's it.
- Which is all about, I guess, the Rasta way.
[Chev] Yeah, you'll leave here with
some dreadlocks. [Elsa] Yeah, right?
[Chev] Oh, man, there's
a lot of thorns over here.
- [Elsa] You got something?
- Yeah, I got one in here.
- [Elsa] Yeah, I just did, too.
- All right.
- [Elsa] Right at the same time.
- Oh, yeah.
- Thorns getting me already.
- [Elsa] Yeah.
- [Chev] How are you feeling?
- [winces]
Hot, hot, hot.
Yeah, this hike so far is
very taxing, to say the least.
Very intense heat,
and I definitely feel
like I'm detoxing,
sweating a little bit.
[Chev grunts]
Every step, it hurts.
[exhales deeply] These
rocks, they're like [bleep] hot.
[Elsa] Yeah.
Yeah, these are hot.
Holy [bleep]. Ow, ow.
- [Chev] Hit your toe?
- Those little ones.
No, it's, like,
those little rocks.
- [Chev] Little burny ones, yeah, yeah.
- They're, like...
Ow, they're like fire.
Never felt anything
so hot in my entire life.
[Chev] Growing up in
Jamaica, we played barefoot,
hanging out on hot
asphalt was a regular day.
- So I'm trying to channel that now.
- [Elsa] Yeah.
This is so different
than the city.
In Upstate New York,
all the mountains up there,
it's just [bleep]
nothing like this.
I've never felt so much pain.
This is like...
It just hurts a lot.
-Oh. -What's wrong?
- I have thorns in my foot. I have a lot of thorns.
- Let me see, let me see.
- Where? Where?
- Right there.
[exhales deeply]
I know I can do this,
but there's just... [sniffles]
There's no way
to train for this.
Like, it's impossible.
[Chev] This is a stupid [bleep]
hike, I'll tell you that much.
[Elsa] Yeah. This
is, like, ridiculous.
- It hurts so bad.
- [Chev] Yeah.
You're doing
good. It'll be okay.
We'll get you down to that
water, put those feet in there,
- cool them off.
- Yeah.
[Chev] That's what we'll
do. We're good. Don't worry.
[exhales deeply]
Ow! [sobbing]
[crying]
Yeah, I want some shade so bad.
Ow! Ow! Ow! [sobbing]
There's nowhere to step.
There's just nowhere to step.
Like, everything
is so hot. [sobbing]
And we're going so
slow because of me.
No, no, no, no. We're good.
We're good. You'll be fine.
I would say definitely
Elsa is struggling.
If I don't do something,
and give her some comfort,
and give her some
reassurance that she'll be all right,
Elsa might just tap.
[wailing]
[exhales deeply]
[Chev] Elsa is
having a hard time,
and I gotta figure it out.
[Elsa] I'm just, like,
freaking out now.
My feet are shaking
and my legs are shaking.
I just feel, like,
so weak right now.
I'm pathetic. And we've
just barely started, you know?
- [Chev] It's okay.
- It's, like, a really terrible feeling.
It's just your mind and your body
saying, "Yeah. What are we doing?"
Maybe we can use
some of the fishing wire,
and, kind of, just wrap
this up under your feet.
[Elsa] My mind is thinking, you
know, like, negative thoughts.
I'm like, "Maybe I'm not
meant to do this," you know.
Like, maybe I'm
not strong enough.
- Yeah, you are.
- And maybe I'm just a city person, you know.
- [Chev] No, you're not.
- [sniffles]
- [Elsa] Okay.
- You can try,
and you can tell me it's hard,
but you can't say
you don't belong here.
- All right?
- [Elsa] Okay.
[Chev] You're good, you're good.
At least that can
give you some relief.
- Thank you so much.
- No problem.
This is why we're
teammates, right?
[Elsa] Thanks.
Could I just walk
with you for a second?
I have never felt so
weak in my whole life.
[Chev] No, man, you're strong.
[Elsa] All right. I'll just see
how slow and careful I can be.
- Thank you so much.
- Yeah. Just take your time.
No rush, no rush.
Elsa is a warrior, you know,
and she's in a lot of pain,
and I can see it in her.
But I hope things get better,
and she's already
earned my respect.
Don't think about the pain.
Just breathe through that.
You've got this.
I see water!
- [bleep] Yeah!
- [Elsa] Yay!
- Oh, my God.
- [Chev] Yeah!
[Elsa] Oh, my
God. It's so close.
[Chev] Gets a little
nicer over here.
[Elsa] I don't know what
I'd do for, like, a green juice.
All I can think about
is, like, a smoothie.
[Chev] Mmm-hmm.
[Elsa] Oh, my God.
I can't believe
we're almost there.
[Chev] It's right there.
[Elsa] So beautiful.
The mud feels so good.
I'm so grateful right now.
[Chev] My feets are
[bleep] up. Both of them.
This feels [bleep]
good. Hell yeah.
- Cool yourself down.
- [Elsa] It feels so good.
[Chev] The sun is gonna
go down pretty soon.
Yeah.
[Chev] Let's try and get
our shelter going, some fire.
While you're at it, I
want you to fill this up.
[Elsa] Perfect. [Chev] Yeah.
[Elsa] Yeah, I feel my body's
cramping up pretty bad right now.
I feel like I'm sunburnt.
Doesn't look too clear.
- [Elsa] It is what it is.
- [grunts in frustration]
[Elsa] I guarantee you, Chev, this water is
gonna be better than New York tap water.
Do you know how many
chemicals they put in that [bleep]?
[Chev] Let's rock and roll.
All right, do you want me
to work on starting the fire?
Yeah, but we... Let's just, kind
of, source where we wanna stay...
- Yeah.
- First.
And then, I can
start working on that.
[Elsa] Well, this spot
here looks good and flat.
How big do you wanna
build this thing, though?
It would be good
to build it pretty big.
And then, we're... And then, if we
can get some energy in us tomorrow,
we could build a, uh,
little, like, debris hut inside.
We have the boma. And that
will protect us from the cold.
These trees are gonna form
a natural wall in the shelter.
- [Chev] All right.
- All right.
[Chev] Let's put it
between these two, um...
Brush towards these two trees.
- Up against these two trees, and just making a circle here?
- [Chev] Yeah.
[narrator] Chev and Elsa
will be constructing a boma,
a traditional African structure
made from branches and brush,
which are stacked
high to prevent animals
from coming too
close to the inhabitants.
All right. I'll be cutting
stuff for the boma.
You start with the fire.
- Perfect. Let's go.
- All right.
[Elsa] Oh my God,
I'm so dehydrated.
[Chev grunts]
[bleep]
I couldn't reach
those birds' nests.
I just got one piece, but...
It's almost catching.
It's just, I don't have enough.
Can you find any little, like,
dead kindling anywhere?
- Like, dead bark?
- [Chev grunts]
[Chev bleep] Thorn.
There we go. Move
some of this off.
[Elsa] I need that water so bad.
[Chev] We've got a fire.
Yeah, I can barely
talk, my mouth is so dry,
but my heart is smiling.
- [Chev] It's what we do for each other.
- Super grateful.
Oh, my God. Legitimately gold.
Chev, do you want
to try a sip of this?
Not bad, right?
It tastes like [bleep] sulfur.
[Elsa] First night
here in the boma.
Quite cozy, considering that
we are surrounded by thorns.
I'm exhausted.
Today was so insane.
This guy literally saved my life
and carried me through,
so I have to just say
thank you so much.
My new best bud.
Yeah, tomorrow will be good.
[Chev] It's on the agenda
tomorrow, a shelter.
- Right, Elsa?
- [Elsa] Mmm-hmm.
[Chev] Elsa and I have
to keep the fire going,
so I can't sleep.
There's a few things
that we have to do today.
We have to build a shelter.
I don't consider
that being a shelter.
I think that thing is
just a wall of protection.
[Elsa] Definitely
a tough first night.
I just tried to get a
few seconds of sleep.
I, uh, was freezing,
so I'm excited to try
to build a shelter today
that will actually keep us warm
and be a little more
comfortable, I hope.
I'm just gonna go
gather more firewood,
because we're just gonna fly
through that every day, all day.
[Chev] The plan for
the shelter is to make
a little wigwam
lean-to kind of thing.
First layer is going to
be just straight up wood.
We're gonna put leaves through
the second layer for some insulation.
Come right in here
now. Oh, yeah, baby.
We wanna get this shelter done
before the sun gets really hot.
This mud does feel amazing.
Happy I made a pitstop down here
in my firewood excursion.
Trying to just
protect from the sun.
Hope there's not too
much animal poop in this.
But I think that animal
poop helps my microbiome,
therefore, it makes
my body run better,
so that might be a
good thing, I don't know.
Hell yeah. Hell yeah.
Ooh. Oh, [bleep] it worked.
What's going on over there?
I'm annoyed.
When we met, we said we were
gonna do everything together.
And then, here I am,
doing it all right now.
It's pathetic.
[Elsa] Chev, I'm just gonna
lay down for a second,
but I'm right over here.
And I have some water,
in case you need it,
that's gonna be getting
cooler and cooler.
[Chev] But you have to get the
shelter done at some point, though.
[Elsa] No, I know. I
just have to lay down,
even if it's just
for 20 minutes,
- because the sun is really getting to me.
- [Chev] All right.
I am starting to feel as
if I am a one-man show.
I want this thing
done. This is important.
If we don't have
shelter tonight,
we're [bleep] out here.
[Chev] It takes
two to tango, right?
I need help, man.
Ow! Ow! [bleep]
That's my cue. I'm
gonna take a break.
This heat is on
another level today.
My back is burning me.
[Elsa] Yeah, I feel you. I'm, like,
dying. [Chev stutters] My feet hurt.
[Elsa] Same, same, same.
I'm trying to think about
how to conserve energy,
and it's like the sun feels like
it's, kind of, at the
hottest point right now.
And if we're, like, doing all
the heavy lifting right now,
I don't know if, like, that makes
the most sense for our bodies.
-Like, I'm just trying to
like... -You wanna do it later?
[Elsa] I feel like it would
make more sense right now
to, like, rest, which I
feel like we both need to.
We should finish it.
But if roofs are there,
we have some insulation.
We can always come back
and reinsulate every other day.
Yeah.
You know, we can just
collect extra firewood.
[Chev] Yeah. The sun is brutal.
We gotta figure
out a way around it.
[Elsa] Super tired
and light headed.
Maybe you just need some
protein, you know, some food.
So I'll see what we can do.
I'm gonna go look
for a few scorpions.
See if I can find something.
There's, like,
nothing around here.
[winces] Ow!
These thorns, man, every day I
come out here, it's another [bleep] issue.
Damn it. There's
gotta be something.
This is crazy.
Holy [bleep].
Is that what I think it is?
Gotcha!
Scorpion.
[Elsa] Oh, my God.
What do you have?
[Chev] I got a
scorpion! [bleep] yeah.
[Elsa] What? [Chev] Yeah.
[Elsa] Yeah, good job.
[Chev] Yeah. I'm just gonna
roast that baby right there,
just like that.
[Elsa] It's like a beautiful
little desert lobster.
Oh, this is about to be the
first thing we're tasting in a day.
- Wow.
- It has been that long. [laughing]
- [Chev] It's a record, right?
- Yeah.
- There we go.
- Damn.
- Oh, my God.
- Let's cheers to you.
- Cheers.
- Good job.
[Elsa] Here we go.
- [Chev] Hmm.
- Soft shell crab.
- Crawfish.
- Yeah. It's tasty.
Good job. That's amazing.
After my first time eating a
scorpion, I feel a lot better.
Mmm.
[Chev] Very early
morning. It's freezing out.
Here I am, trying to go fishing.
As I was looking for bait, um, I
found a dead fish in the beach.
So most definitely
gonna break this guy apart
and use him as my bait.
Elsa and I woke up with the
same idea, building a shelter,
and hydrating ourselves.
Um, but, you know, I'm
starting to feel fatigued now,
and I know I need food.
You know, if I want to keep this
same energy, I need some fuel.
So, we'll focus on that
and see how that works out.
[Elsa] Sleeping
on the dirt, it's hard,
and this sunburn is
very, very, very painful.
I've never seen
my skin look so red.
I had no idea
an environment even existed
like this on planet Earth.
It's a whole another world out
here, especially to be naked in.
Although my energy
levels are low,
I do feel like we can pull
through it, we can do this.
So, Chev and I are just
about to set up some lines
from a little wooden
rod in the ground,
and then, if something catches,
hopefully it will just
be caught on there,
and when we come
back later tonight,
there will be a fish there.
[Chev] Elsa.
I checked the lines.
Nothing bit our bait yet.
[Elsa] Too bad.
So, this is basically
for bedding.
[Chev] It could be for
bedding or for shelter.
- [Elsa] Perfect.
- If it rains.
So, what's the priority,
bedding or rain?
[Elsa] Bedding.
[Chev] You think so?
- [Elsa] Yeah.
- If we have bedding and it rains,
we're soaked. We're done.
[Elsa] I agree 100%.
But I heard it, like,
doesn't rain here.
When it does, it's just
for, like, 30 minutes.
[Chev] Okay.
My partner suggested that we focus
on the bed, versus rain protection.
So we'll focus on that
and see how that works out.
It's quite the adventure.
If it starts raining,
then I'll say, "I told you so."
If it doesn't, then
it's a good plan.
[Elsa speaking]
[Chev speaking]
[Elsa breathing shakily]
[Elsa speaking]
[Chev speaking]
[Elsa speaking] [Chev speaking]
[Elsa speaking]
[Chev speaking]
[Elsa speaking]
I really don't want to tap out,
but I'm feeling so
hopeless right now.
That was probably the
worst night I've had here.
- Yeah.
- We're both starving and it's freezing cold.
And it's just super
uncomfortable.
I do miss the
comforts of the city,
and I'm trying not to think about
it too much, but that's the truth.
[Chev] Damn it. They ate them.
So they ate all
my traps. [bleep]
Three hooks, no fish.
So far, the fish are
doing the winning, not me.
But that can't stop us.
We have to get to 14 days.
Gonna do a little fishing.
See if my luck gets better.
Very concerned
about my partner, Elsa.
She's severely burnt.
But Elsa is a warrior, you know?
I hope things get better,
so we can try to
finish this shelter,
and do what we gotta
do to get up out of here.
I'm putting it right
here because I know
there's fish action
going on here.
You know, it's cold.
This is where they came,
and they took all three
of my baits and my hooks.
So I'm gonna put
it there in the water,
give it a little bit of time
and see what happens.
[Elsa] We have a fire going.
[Elsa speaking]
[Elsa] I'm so tired and so cold.
This camera feels like ice.
It's just the most
painful experience.
I don't know what
to do right now.
[narrator] An unexpected cold
front has come in from the south,
sending temperatures plummeting
to an unprecedented 45 degrees.
It feels like t*rture,
and it's [bleep].
This fire is [bleep] scorching.
We can't go away from
it. Because if we do,
our toes start freezing,
our body starts freezing.
This is one of the hardest
nights of my entire life.
[Elsa] I don't think
either of us slept.
Maybe we got, like, 30 minutes
of sleep by the end of the night.
I'm just literally trying
to get warm enough
- to go get water.
- [Chev speaking]
[Elsa] I'm gonna go
check our fish traps.
Fingers crossed we have
an awesome breakfast.
There are definitely
parts of the night
where I didn't know, like,
if I'd be able to make it.
Way more optimistic
when the sun came up,
but then I just need
a nap at some point.
Our main priority is
our water, food and rest.
It takes a lot of energy
to build a shelter,
when you're having to get
water and everything every day.
It's just not worth the energy.
So, um, we wanna stay focused
on throwing wood on the fire.
[Chev] My feet are
hurting really bad,
and I'm starting to
feel fatigued now,
and I know I need food.
There's fish in that water.
We need it. We know
there's fish in the water,
because we see them jumping
around and moving around, so...
We have one last one.
[Elsa] Oh, my God!
[Chev] We got you!
We got you!
[Elsa] Oh, I cannot
believe this worked.
- Yeah, it did.
- Oh, my God.
My bait did the trick
for me this morning.
[Elsa] Look at
this! [Chev] Yeah!
- Whoo!
- [Elsa] Whoo!
- Mmm-hmm. Look at this.
- [Elsa] I feel so much better.
- Yeah.
- Oh, my God.
Ah. So good, so
good, so good, so good.
[Elsa] I know for a fact
it's gonna taste better
than any catfish I've ever had.
[Chev] Oh, my God.
We're gonna eat.
Get your forky, forky,
- and get your piece-y, piece-y.
- [Elsa] Oh, thank you.
Oh, my God. The
texture is so amazing.
- Cheers.
- [Chev] Cheers.
- Yay.
- First bite.
So excited.
[Chev humming]
[Elsa] Mmm.
Ah. The first bite of that
fish was, like, nutrients,
and this beautiful,
flavorful light fish.
It was amazing.
This fish means everything.
I know that we can make it now.
It can totally get us to day 14.
Even if we don't find
another one, we're good.
- [Chev] Thank you, catfish.
- Mmm-hmm.
[Chev] Thank you, nature.
Day 14 looks a lot better.
It just gives us a lot of hope.
- This is really a gamechanger.
- [Elsa] Mmm-hmm.
[Chev wincing]
[Chev] Foot's in
pretty bad shape.
Day one, the insertion
hike was pretty tough.
Oh [bleep].
And it didn't catch
up to me until today.
[wincing]
[Chev] My right foot, in
particular, just feels heavy.
You know, as I
start looking at it,
I start to see a lot of blisters
on my foot, lots of cuts.
All right.
[winces]
I don't want this to be a reason
why I'm tapping
out of the challenge.
[narrator] As Chev's pain
level continues to increase,
a medic is called in
to examine his foot.
[Lee speaking]
[Chev] Mmm-hmm.
[exhales deeply]
[bleep]
[Lee speaking]
[Chev] Okay. [Lee] All
right. See you later, buddy.
Thanks, Lee.
[Elsa] Chev is having a
lot of issues with his feet,
so he can't really
walk right now.
I'm having issues making fire,
and we need fire in order
to get through the night.
Ow! [bleep]
[grunts] Damn it.
[Elsa] We got a fish,
but it's just not enough.
When you are so lacking in
something and you have a little,
your body needs more,
so I'm exhausted again.
It's really hot.
I tried touching those
coals and I got burnt a lot.
Just pick them
up with something.
You're crushing the fire
when you make it like that.
A fire needs oxygen.
Without oxygen, it
ain't going anywhere.
There's no oxygen
in that fire right now,
because they're all
crushed on top of each other.
You gotta space
them a certain way.
I know. You're
right, you're right.
And I'm wrong. I
know that. I'm sorry.
I can't do this
anymore. [stammering]
This is unnecessary
stress in my life.
I'm sorry for any way
that I've hurt your feelings.
I'm exhausted, I'm
having my own hardships.
I really apologize for
anything that I've done.
I've basically carried you
through your hardships.
I've helped you.
I've stuck right by you
- from the beginning.
- I wanna be there to help too.
I'm really happy to help you.
[Chev] Elsa is great. You
know, she's a good person.
But out here, it's not
just being a good person.
It takes some skill. You need
to know what you're doing,
or you're in a lot of trouble.
Wait, wait. Why are
you k*lling it? There's fire.
Don't you see
that's, that's lit?
- [Elsa exhales deeply]
- [Chev] No. Oh, God.
-[Elsa] Is there any... -You're not
supposed to step in the god damn dirt!
- [Elsa] Okay, don't... [stutters] I'll do it.
- [groans in frustration]
Now I gotta walk around on
my feet, so I can't sit and wait.
[Elsa] There is definitely
a lot of intense energy.
[groans in frustration]
[Elsa] You know, his
foot's very, very hurt.
He's not allowed to stand on it.
I feel this big sense
of frustration in him,
but I can barely move
in this climate right now.
It's so hot,
and, you know,
entire body's burned,
and then, it's
freezing cold at night.
I'm super light headed,
and my heart is racing,
- so talking to me like that is not gonna help right now.
- All right. Fine, fine.
- So, please, like, just try to be nice.
- Can you please get me
a coal so I can put it in here?
[Elsa sobbing]
[Chev] I'm pretty
annoyed right now,
because every time I say
something, it's just crying.
[Elsa] I'm beyond belief,
trying to be nice right now.
I feel like a walking, dried-out
dead person right now.
It's literally hard to move
because my skin hurts so bad.
Ow, ow, ow, ow.
Ow!
[Chev] You all right?
[Elsa] Our shelter's just not
working, and it's not worth having up.
It's about to collapse.
There's no space around
the fire because of the shelter,
- so we just need to get rid of it.
- So, yeah, move it.
I'm really freezing,
and I, and I can't sleep,
because I need
to maintain the fire,
so that my body temperature
is staying up high enough.
I'm just, um, feeling down,
and my thoughts
big time right now.
[Chev] These cuts on my foot,
I think the pain is getting to my
head, so it's making me nauseous.
And it's weighing on my
heart. It's, it's annoying me.
And it's, you know, making me
suffer more than I plan to suffer.
I don't know how much
more I can take of this.
I didn't come
here to be in pain.
If it continues this way,
it's gonna be a struggle,
and I'm not willing to go down
the road it wants to take me.
- Elsa.
- [Elsa] Mmm-hmm?
- Um, I don't know.
- [Elsa] What don't you know?
I don't think I can go
any longer, honestly.
- What do you mean?
- My legs, I can't move them.
They're stiff, they're
hurting like crazy.
It's hurting more
and more every day.
I tried my best,
but the reality is,
I think it's just...
I think it's time.
[Elsa] Wow. There is a
grasshopper right here,
which would be
a delicious snack,
but it could be
even better bait.
All right. There we go.
Sorry, little guy. Oh, my God!
Damn. I feel so bad.
What did you get?
[Elsa] I got a grasshopper,
and I'm just struggling with it,
and he's, like, biting me,
and he's really intense.
A grasshopper?
[Elsa] Okay, this is pathetic.
I need to learn how
to k*ll a grasshopper.
This is really sad.
Okay, sorry, buddy.
My first k*ll.
Holy [bleep]. God.
The grasshopper is still
hopping, and he's dead.
[Elsa shrieks]
Elsa, I think it's
just... I think it's time.
[Elsa] Can you give
it one more night?
[Chev] Um... [Elsa] I don't
know if I can be here without you.
I swear I know
your pain is so bad,
and I know it is,
but let's try one
more night, okay?
Yeah. I'll give it
a day, all right?
[Elsa] Perfect.
[Chev] On day one, you know,
Elsa and I made each other
a promise that we wouldn't quit.
I appreciate, you
know, Elsa sticking up
and standing up and telling
me, "You got this. You can do it."
And it, kind of, got me
back on track a little bit
to make me want to say, "Okay,
I'll see what one more day does,"
and maybe I'll see what
two more days does,
or three more days, or four more
days, and finally, challenge over.
So we'll see how that plays out.
[Elsa] It's day ten.
I'm just doing the best I can
to get through
the next few days.
My partner is good.
You know, I think he's good overall,
I'm happy we both made it to today.
He seems a little
more optimistic today.
I think we're gonna make it.
Hopefully we could just get
through these next few days,
and look back on
all this and smile.
Can I hand this to you?
'Cause I need to move
this wood to get in there.
Thank you.
[Chev] I had to do a little
bit of digging deep in myself,
but, you know, I'm ready to just
start punching through this challenge,
and just do what I gotta do.
You know, I'm in a good mindset
right now, a positive mindset,
where I feel like I can do it.
I think we're in good shape.
Yeah, it looks like the rain is
coming, or something like that,
'cause it's pretty chilly
and it's a bit overcast.
[Elsa] It's definitely
a little cooler today.
It's finally nightfall
here on the tenth night.
And I do feel...
I feel the weather, but I'm hopeful
the rain's gonna hold off or pass.
I'm excited to just rest
a little more tonight,
enjoy the fire, and
yeah, take on tomorrow.
[thunder crackling]
[bleep]
[bleep]
[Elsa sobbing]
[Chev speaking]
We have no idea what time it is,
but it's raining, and
it hasn't stopped.
I literally don't
know what to do.
[Chev] We couldn't
get a shelter together.
If we had a shelter, at least
we would have been able
to stay dry a lot longer.
[Elsa] It's too [bleep]
cold. I can't do this, man.
[Chev] We can't stand next to
the fire. It's burning our legs off.
We have to step away
and then we're freezing.
I don't know if we're gonna
make it through the night.
This is one of the most
miserable moments of my life.
[Elsa sobbing]
Last night was the most
painful night of my entire life.
We are freezing.
Everything is soaking wet.
We couldn't start a fire
if we wanted to right now.
- We've got...
- Nothing.
- [Elsa] Nothing.
- No shot.
I'm sorry, Elsa. I wish I could
have holded on a little longer...
- [Elsa] I'm sorry, too.
- But I can't do it.
I feel like I'm on the
verge of hypothermia,
and it sucks.
It's day 11, and we're
only a few days away,
but I can't go
on. I can't go on.
[sighs] I've had
enough, man. I'm done.
I don't know what to say.
I'm just really exhausted.
It's time for us
to get out of here.
Elsa to producers.
[producer] Go ahead.
We need to tap out.
We're tapping out.
All right. Headed your way.
[Kyle] Hey, guys.
What's going on?
[sighs] I've hit
that point, man.
I'm sorry, but I gotta go.
I don't have another
hour in me here.
- Yeah.
- It's freezing. I'm...
- I feel like I can't go on right now.
- Yeah.
[Kyle] So, you're both tapping?
- Yeah, I'm tapping.
- I'm tapping.
I'm tapping. I have to.
Unfortunately, I have to.
[Kyle] There's nothing you guys
think you can do to stay in this for now?
I'm... It's just not
gonna happen.
[Kyle] If you guys wanna tap,
we'll get you out of here, all right?
- Thank you.
- [Chev] Yeah, I gave it everything. It's just time.
Sorry, though.
It sucks. I didn't want to tap.
I wanted to finish
the challenge.
But I can only take what I can
take, and this is my threshold,
so I'm willing to walk away.
[Elsa] I'm definitely
sad to tap so close.
I so badly wanted to
make it to the extraction,
but I'm gonna cut
myself some slack.
This is my first
time doing this.
This is definitely the hardest
thing I've done in my entire life.
So I have a huge
respect for this challenge,
and for everybody that's come
before me and survived this.
I don't know how
much more extreme
a survival situation could get.
I couldn't have imagined this.
I prepared in every
which way I possibly could.
I got my mind right, you know.
And, and for it to just
cut short three days out,
it sucks.
[Elsa] We needed to put up a
really protective, large shelter.
[Chev] Yeah.
[narrator] With only three
days left in the challenge,
Elsa and Chev drop out.
Elsa's PSR drops
from a 5.4 to a 4.8.
Chev's drops
from a 5.8 to a 5.3.
[Chev] So, anybody right now
that's watching this
at home, on the couch,
you get off the couch, and you
can try it and see what happens.
This is the real deal.
[Elsa] I believe that
surviving out here
and surviving in the
city is sink or swim.
I know a lot of New
Yorkers could not...
Could not do this.
- Yeah. You never know.
- But then again, you know, they're tough, they're tough.
- New Yorkers are tough, so...
- It's a different toughness, though.
If you wanna find out what
really is your kryptonite,
come out here, and this
challenge will tell you.
Ah, finally.
Mmm.
Green juice.
