You can use fishing if
the fishing's calling for it.

You got a big, tall stick,
keeps your lines all elevated

some danglers dangling in.

Isn't exactly at the
top of my christmas list.

But, since we're
just testing this out,

We decided to put a
grand down on a used one

Instead of 10 grand
down on a brand-new one.

And, in the pictures, this
thing looked like it was gray.

This green-stick method of
fishing actually originated in japan.

They used to run
big bamboo sticks.

Obviously, bamboo's green.

So that was where the name
of the green stick came from.

You know, now
they've been modified.

They're made out of
carbon fiber, fiberglass.

You know, by the looks of,
probably, what you'd seen,

I would say that it's
probably a fiberglass stick.

[josh] oh, yep. There
it is. Right there, case.

-[casey] that's it, huh?

-[josh] this is the big buy.

This is the base. This base
balance on the boat, like this.

So, how does it check
out? In good condition?

The only way we'll really know how
good it's gonna work is when we run it.

Green-stick fishing,
here we come.

[josh] well, we're gonna
start at the 40-fathom ledge.

It's pretty close. There's
a lot of action there.

A lot of fish have been running
up shallow. Let's see what happens.

So we're sticking with the
traditional method of trolling

While those guys
try out that stick.

See how that goes for them.

The 40-fathom ledge is wher we
caught the biggest ahi in kauai so far.

Because the shelf drops off, the current
comes in and creates a nice upwelling.

And it could attract a schoo

But, since we
only have one stick,

Shane and I, we're
gonna stick to rod and reel.

Pull in whatever we can.

Hopefully, we can hit some
fish while they're hitting theirs.

But, one way or another, I'm looking
forward to see what that stick can do.

So this is the first thing that
we put in the water. It's the bird.

-Okay?
-So what is this "bird" gonna do?

So, if you look
at the stick now,

It's just sitting
perfectly vertical.

This actually makes
the stick bend over

So that the base
dangle in the water.

-Okay.
-All right? You ready, buddy?

I'm gonna throw this thing in.

Okay, you can go ahead
and go in that bucket,

And let's get some
of those squids out.

Green-sticking is pretty simple,

But it's a pretty creative method
on catching tunas really fast.

The line runs from
the top of the stick,

About 600 feet back to the
drag, what's called the bird.

Dangling in between, about four or
five lures. They dance on the surface.

As the boat moves forward, the
tuna sees that bird as competition.

Their natural instinct
is to get to that bait first

And, before you know
it, it's a feeding frenzy.

We are ready to go,
whenever you are.

[kodi] all right,
let's roll, boys.

really good out here.

Very, very, very few
fishermen venture this far north.

It's the last resort, we're
pulling out all the stops.

Going there is a gamble.

just to get there.

But underwater structures like it
are fishermen's secret weapon.

On the bering sea, my old
man's go-to was a rock pile.
