accident out here

a guy busted up pretty bad.

back in the truck.

I think I got a hole
in the radiator.

the year where we can't win?

To hopefully fix some leaks.

But recently his gold
production has taken a dive.

was really disappointing,

We can't have that
anymore or we're

Just not gonna hit our target.

Narrator: he's still a quarter
of a million dollars short

Of hitting his $1.2 million
season goal.

But I'd rather have an excavator

Narrator: terry's in
the downstream cut

Struggling to get a full load
of pay into ben's rock truck.

Man:
I'm scraping frozen pay dirt.

I'm getting a little
bit off the top,

Enough to keep one truck moving.

Narrator: up at the plant,
ryan's running low on pay.

Ryan: if things keep going
the way they are,

The reality is we're
gonna run out of pay here,

Probably within
the next two days.

strain on rick's only dozer.

the machine right now.

[ Grinding, rumbling ]

Not looking good, I think I
got a hole in the radiator.

Definitely see
antifreeze spewing.

[ Bleep ]

Hey, rick, do you
have a copy, rick?

Yep, go for rick.

I think I sprung
a leak in the radiator.

You're kidding me.

It's always something.

Narrator: it's down to mechanic

To figure out a solution.

-So what do you wanna do?
-I wanna pull the cages

And then we'll go from there.

We can't afford
any more days off.

We're at the end of

And without the dozer
being in place and running

We're screwed.

So, we're watching the wheels
in carl's head turn right now.

Smoke's a pouring man.

We don't know what
he's going to do next.

I'm going to the parts.

But it's probably gonna

Cause if we could fix it

Which in turn would be
thousands of dollars.

Well how hard is it to get
a radiator replacement?

They can get em right,
but it's gonna be a couple days.

Hey dunn, can you get me some
antifreeze and some eggs?

No problem.

instead of waiting days

For a replacement radiator,

Carl attempts
a last ditch bush fix.

Carl...
[ Laughs ]

I brought your eggs.
Yeah, buddy.

Why do you need eggs?

Hopefully fix some leaks.

Narrator: to stop the leaks,

Carl will crack
two eggs into the radiator,

Start the engine, and the eggs
will cook in the hot water.

And if he's right
the scrambled eggs

Should block the holes
fixing the radiator.

It's our last hope
really, these eggs,

Not a permanent fix, right,

But if you can slow it down it'd
be awesome right?

We got a boating accident out
here at scribner creek.

We got a guy busted up
pretty bad.

We need an emergency
medevac, now.

[ Helicopter whirring ]

Parker: last night mitch and I
went on a jet boat ride

That resulted in
a pretty bad crash,

And it's a pretty serious
[bleep] up on my part.

Narrator: parker was driving
the jet boat at high speed,

Hit a rock,
and landed on top of mitch.

♪♪

I feel like a real
piece of [bleep].

♪♪

Went out around the river,
parker was doing really good,

But we came around a corner
and just a wall of rocks,

Nowhere to go.

We almost made it through,
but we didn't.

Hit the rock boat, leaned up on
the right-hand side

I went into
the side of the boat.

Parker came into me,

I heard a big snap --
and I've broke bones before,

I know what that sound is.

I knew right when it
happened it was broke,

So I just grabbed
onto my raincoat

And just held 'er tight
and started walking out.

It was probably about two miles

From where we had
to park the boats

To where we could get
back to the pickups.

Got a helicopter
and here we are.

Narrator: operator zack smith

Was at the scene
of the accident.

Zack:
mitch was in a lot of pain.

There was a 20 minute
truck ride back to camp

And that road is not smooth,

So you can just imagine being in

That much pain shaking
around in that truck.

He's a real trooper, man,
I really respect that dude.

It's really [bleep] to see
that mitch is down, you know.

It's probably gonna
really affect this season.

We're at 6,000 ounce goal
that we set.

Timing couldn't have been worse.

I think he's got a broken arm.

I'm just gonna see him now.

I feel [bleep] terrible.

Here's the x-ray.

Yeah, I don't think

breaking a wash plant,

some more parts on it

To get it back together.

It's my own damn fault,

The last thing we
needed this season

And this last thing
mitch needs in his life.

Mitch is much less
of an employee

And more of a, you know,

Friend and I just don't want
him to be any lasting issues,

You know.

Like, I mean [bleep] the gold.

I just hope he's all right.

Narrator: tony beets is running

A massive 500 yards an hour
through three wash plants.

Dredge one,

Monica's wash plant,

And his newly
renovated pierson box.

Narrator: tony has reached
a major milestone.

Every part of his second dredge
is on the claim

Ready to be assembled.

Narrator: three years ago

Tony spent a million dollars
buying the dredge.

Narrator: it's taken two years,

And more than 30 barge loads
to transport it

On a mega-journey
160 miles across the yukon.

Tony has summoned his children,
monica, kevin,

And mike,
to help him piece

His 72 year old
dredge back together.

It's about [bleep] time.

On the bright side
it's all here finally.

Narrator: the beets family
has already built

A dry dock on gold-rich ground.

Next, they'll assemble
steel pontoons

That together form the hull.

Once the rest of the dredge
is constructed,

They will flood the dry dock
and start mining

The gold-rich pay dirt.

They have just
six weeks to do it all

Before the klondike freeze
sets in.

Narrator: monica starts by
dragging the pontoons

Into the dry dock
with the loader.

Monica:
we just got the first one in,

Now we're gonna go get
the second and the third.

Before you know it we'll
have people bolting

This [bleep] together
and dredge number two

Will be well on its
way to being built.

Third pontoon,

In and down.

Woo.

Narrator:
mike brings in the 50 ton crane

To lift the pontoons
into position.

Am I good to release it?

Man: kev, you wanna jump
in there real quick

And put some nuts on those?

-That one there?
-Yeah, there's nuts.

Narrator:
it will take 6,000 bolts

To secure the pontoons together.

Man: right now it's crunch time,
all hands are on deck.

We're trying to get
this thing put together.

Makes another pontoon.

Narrator: the final pontoon
is twice the size

Of the others.

Whoa, whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Narrator: next, mike must inch

The 28 ton pontoon
precisely into place...

So that it's bolts align.

Narrator: the crane has ripped
one of the d-rings

Clean off the pontoon.

Tony re-rigs the chain.

Narrator: and at last, the final
piece is in place.

So, what do you think?

Yeah, that's impressive.

There's a single
crack on the weld,

But it took the whole deck off.

You should hang that on your
door, a new door knocker.

[ Laughs ]

Narrator: tony beets is one step
closer to his dream

Of running a fleet
of gold dredges.

This was a great start,
this went [bleep] fantastic.

What happened with mitch
has shaken me up a fair bit,

But we're taking good care
of him so that's good.

Narrator: two days ago,

Parker crashed
his new jet boat,

Slamming into his buddy, mitch.

Here's the x-ray.

Narrator: parker broke
mitch's arm in two places.

I'm so [bleep] sorry, man.

Back on the claim,
things are falling apart.

Man: I just rapping on
the camper here.

Narrator:
parker's second mechanic,

Chad paullus,
has quit.

Chad: basically parker and I
just don't get along

And I've put up with
it for three years,

So I think it's finally time
that I just move on

To maybe not bigger things,

But definitely
some better things.

Narrator:
to make matters worse,

Two more crew
have walked out on parker.

Man:
we've lost a lot of people.

We've lost mitch,
and that's a big blow to us.

It could cost us the season.

I haven't seen parker.

Narrator:
parker's claim is in crisis,

And his 6,000 ounce gold
at risk.

But the mine boss is
locked away in his trailer

Still distraught about
breaking mitch's arm.

Parker: sometimes it's pretty
tough to do this.

It's pretty tough to keep going.

What was I thinking,
and I should have just,

I'm just kicking myself for
not being alone in there.

Like at the end of the day,

It should be me that's
all [bleep] up, not him.

Parker was driving the boat
when they crashed

And he's taking it
probably harder than mitch.

He feels that he's pretty
much destroyed mitch's career,

But I honestly believe
he'll bounce back.

Parker's taking it really hard.

The winter freeze is coming,

But his loader's busted,

So he can't feed
dirt reynolds.

It's not clean in half.

Narrator: a new loader pin

But will take days to arrive.

Narrator: and every hour
the plant is down

the two parts together.

Carl: gouged it out so now
we're gonna weld it,

Preheat, and then we're gonna
cool it down nice and slow,

Right, so that we don't
temper it too much.

Narrator:
next, carl heats the pin

To help the welds stick.

Carl: this pin could
make the difference

Between us making
our goal or not, right?

So this is how we're doing it.

Narrator: the steel electrode
melts at 2,500 degrees.

Perfect!

That looks good!

I like it!

So another long day.

Tomorrow morning,
grind it down, sand it down,

And then we're gonna polish it.

And then we're going to try
and get it back in there.
