winter has come to the klondike.

Rick ness is desperate to turn
a profit in his rookie season,

But he's still 60 ounces short

Of his 1,000-ounce,
$1.2-million goal.

Holy [bleep] buddy.

-It's a bad deal.
-She froze last night.

Rick: [bleep] sprinklers
aren't even turning.

Terry:
no. This isn't good.

Whoa. Whoa.
Yeah. This is rock solid.

[ Laughing ]

It got really [bleep] cold
last night.

Narrator:
rick installed sprinklers,

Which successfully thawed
the pay dirt,

But a 10-degree drop
in temperature overnight

Means that instead
of melting the ground,

The water has now formed
a surface layer of solid ice.

Beneath the ice lies two feet
of pay dirt that's still thawed.

It could contain enough gold
to make a good profit for rick,

The milwaukee boys,
and their families.

Well, I hope there's a couple
of feet of thawed pay

So it's time to [bleep]
toss up a hail mary,

Get these [bleep] sprinklers
out of here

And start getting this

Before it's all froze
and locked in

the film crew, freya,

Was mounting a mini-cam
to the vehicle when it was hit.

A medic attends to the cut
above her eye.

Freya and the medic head to
dawson for further treatment.

I mean, don't be
too hard on yourself.

[Bleep] happens.

about the truck.

I'm just glad
everyone's okay.

That could've been bad.

We've blown past our target.

I mean, 6,000 ounces is
well behind us now,

But we're paying
more royalties this season

Than we found
our first season up here.

It's un-[bleep]-believable.

Narrator:
parker schnabel has hit
his $7.2-million goal,

But he's paid a staggering
$3.6 million in royalties

To landlord tony
over the past five years,

A sum that would have
upset his grandpa.

Five years ago, grandpa john
inspired him with a mission.

Parker, I would get out
from under tony

And earn enough
to buy your own claim.

After finally reaching
an agreement with tony,

Parker can now mine
his own ground -- the bank cut.

I'd love for our season to end

With some gold
out of our own ground.

Narrator:
to prepare for his next season

Mining the ground he owns,

Parker needs to prove
how much gold it contains.

Parker: yeah, and the biggest
thing right now

Is if we're gonna be
mining here next year,

We've got to start
getting an idea

Of what's in the ground,

We're heading into ground
that has never had

An ounce of gold
pulled off of it before.

We're heading off
into the unknown.

Narrator:
first, he has to move big red,

And with winter closing in,
he needs to act fast.

Man: we got a boating accident
down here in scribner creek.

We got a guy
busted up pretty bad.

Narrator:
a month ago, when parker crashed
his jet boat with mitch in it,

Mitch had to be medevaced to
the hospital with a broken arm.

I mean, I don't know
if it's worth anything,

But I'm so [bleep] sorry.

[ Laughing ]
dude, it's not your fault.

I mean...

It was fun until we wrecked.
[ Laughs ]

It was a lot of fun,

But I'm glad
that you came back.

another wash plant.

we're gonna need it.

as the mechanic

And one of the only professional
truck drivers on the crew,

Parker relies on mitch

To safely coordinate
every wash-plant move.

Mitch: I'd much rather be
a little more hands-on,

But all I can do is kind of
coach from the sidelines here.

Parker:

Narrator: parker tasks brennan
to get the 50-ton wash plant

Onto the trailer.

Come on, baby.

Brennan: I'm a little nervous
right now.

One wrong move,
that [bleep] plant slips off

The side of the deck.

It's so top-heavy,
it's just gonna fall over.

I don't want to be around
when that happens

'Cause that will be
an unhappy parker

And, you know,

a truck with one arm.

Well, I've been sitting here
watching everybody else work,

And it's the only thing
I probably can do all right.

So I'll make it work.

Well, I'd like you

Narrator: mitch got his
trucker's license at age 18.

He's the best driver
on the team.

Here we go.

Mitch has to haul the unstable
load out of the last cut.

He will negotiate four miles
of dirt roads

Across a narrow causeway,

Round a sharp bend
constricted by trees,

Then up a 25-degree gradient
to get to parker's new ground,

The bank cut.

Hey, buddy. I'm hanging off
this side a couple feet.

How about you?
-[ Laughing ] yeah.

It's definitely over the edge
of the road into the pond.

I've hauled some stupid
stuff before,

But this is definitely
number one on the list.

Clearly.

[ Radio beeps ]

How did that lean look?

[ Laughter ]

Yeah, that's gonna be tight

Mitch: yeah, I'm really worried
about this next corner

That's got a bunch

some logging.

That made me a little nervous
for a minute.

Mitch: last thing we need to do
is break the truck.

...after a nerve-racking
four-mile drive,

Mitch steers big red
into its new home,

The bank cut.

no problem.

Not too many people
would drive that down a road.

Narrator: tony beets has
shut down all his wash plants

And abandoned his dream
of hitting $7.2 million.

All he cares about now
is getting his second dredge

Mining gold
by the end of the season.

His kids,
michael, monica, kevin,

Together with mechanic juan,
are ready to get the job done.

Tony is a year behind schedule,

And he's spent well over
$1 million.

He needs to finally
complete his dredge.

First up -- the trommel,

The wash plant
at the heart of the dredge.

Tony needs to position
the giant trommel

Precisely into
the narrow steel framework.

He can then insert
the 40-foot spud

That will act as the anchor.

Yeah, we're still
getting some bolts in.

Perfect.
Let's do it.

Juan is still working
on the steel frame,

So tony goes for a shortcut

By installing the four-ton spud
ahead of the trommel.

I'm just hoping when it gets
put in place

That it's not gonna be
in the way of the trommel.

Man:
whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

By lifting it up.

That's hilarious.

Narrator:
to lift the 13-ton trommel,

Tony will use two cranes.

Mike beets and mike scriba

Will have to coordinate
their two cranes perfectly

To get the 34-foot trommel
precisely into place.

I'm just casually taking
my trommel for a walk.

Monica and kevin help guide the
13-ton trommel into position.

Monica: whoo!

-Whoa.
-Hold it!

-Whoa.
-Whoa!

Tony, I'm caught
on something.

Nope.

I am swinging to my left.

I don't [bleep] see him!

Narrator:
tony beets' dredge assembly
has hit a serious problem.

His rushed decision to install
the 40-foot spud first

Has backfired.

The 13-ton trommel won't fit

And is now hanging precariously
50 feet above the ground.

Riiiight.

Narrator: the 13-ton trommel
should be inserted horizontally,

But tony's blocked it
by installing the spud.

Instead of removing the spud,
tony takes a radical decision --

Cut out a beam on either side

To allow him to drop the trommel
vertically into place.

Juan: andy and cody
can make their cuts.

We'll get those beams
out of the way,

And we should be able
to slide it right in.

finally installed.

And tony's new dredge is
one step closer to mining gold.

Getting the plant down here
and getting everything set up.

Narrator: with just days left
in the season,

Park schnabel is on the point of
realizing a lifetime ambition.

Finally, for the first time,

We've got our own plant set up
on ground we bought.

I'm not asking tony for a thing.

I think this is the start
of something really good.

Narrator: parker is finishing
setting up big red.

He's finally ready to mine
his own klondike pay dirt

With his own plant
on his own ground.

Mitch: we've got the shaker deck
in place, our sluice runs.

the super conveyor lined up.

I'm able to scrape some --
a few inches off,

But it's all just coming up

where we're unable

To get the pay

It's gonna be pretty
devastating for all of us.

That was a pretty brutal season

For a bunch of new people
that never gold-mined before.
