Right now on "fast n' loud"...
Shazam!
Last week,
hot rod hunter Richard rawlings
and master mechanic
Aaron Kaufman
set out to transform
a bewitching '78 cutlass
into a one-of-a-kind
gas monkey lowrider.
My latino side just went...
* Ahh *
but their big dreams
hit some big bumps
when Aaron's design
didn't deliver.
This should be a lowrider
right now, and it's not.
And Richard's hopes
for a fairy tale payday
on a classic Mercedes...
That is cool.
Fell under an evil curse.
The motor is trashed.
Dang it.
I was really countin' on
this one.
Now, push comes to shove
as Richard rolls the dice again
with his top fuel dragster.
We got one more chance.
And the monkeys race
to bring Aaron's
sleeping beauty to life.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Will a custom paint
job and a little monkey magic...
Whoo-Hoo!
Be enough to save the day?
I could not be happier
right now!
Or will the monkeys'
happy ending
disappear with a bang?

Will that thing fit
between the lifts?
What, Aaron?
Of course, Aaron,
it'll fit between the lifts.
He's not that big.
I could block this floor Jack,
probably.
We just gonna pick up the rear?
Just pick it up.
Are we gonna dump it off
the cart before we do that?
We might.
If you lift up,
I can get it out now.
Goin' up.
I've always wanted to
build a lowrider,
but I never thought
that Richard would go for it.
But here we are,
a week and a half
into transforming
the '78 cutlass
into gas monkey's
very first lowrider.
We're gonna have to
align it again.
So, here at gas monkey garage,
we change the altitude of cars
all the time.
Most of the time we use
air ride,
which uses compressed air
moved into an airbag to lift
and lower the vehicle.
But lowriders traditionally
use hydraulics,
which moves fluid in
and out of a cylinder
to handle the lifting
and lowering.
An advantage of air ride is that
it has fewer components
and it yields a great ride.
Now, hydraulics,
you can build a nice ride,
but it's more complicated.
For the first gas monkey
lowrider,
I've come up with
a custom modification
to get the ride that I'm after
out of the hydraulics.
This should be a lowrider
right now, and it's not.
Mind you, this is something that
we've never attempted
before at the garage.
So, naturally, we ran into
a couple fitment issues
that necessitated us
to remove part of the trunk
to clear the hydraulics.
Not o.S.H.A.-Approved,
but, you know...
That took extra time,
and we haven't got around to
testing the car yet
because we're moving on to
the other major upgrade...
The elaborate paint job.
Nope.
We're good right there.
It's perfect.
This'll be another first
for gas monkey, but as always,
I know k.C.'S up to the task.
But will he have enough time?
Well, that's another issue
altogether.
The cutlass has gotta
be done in a week
because that's when I scheduled
the big reveal party
at the bar and grill.
All right.
Let's move her in.
Maybe.
Removed all
the traction in here.
Oh, god.
And you know what they say,
"you don't get a second chance
to make a good
first impression."
Yeah, it's nothing special
so far.
But let me tell you,
intricate lowrider paint jobs
are about as common around here
as a unicorn farting rainbows.
I mean, they're cool.
But they are different.
While hot rods have clean,
sleek lines,
lowriders wanna be
right in your face.
You know, lots of colors,
crazy patterns, et cetera.
Each car is totally
one-of-a-kind.
Although I'm extremely
fascinated by
lowrider paint jobs,
I have never attempted
or done one before, ever.
Um, so I'm very nervous that
Richard just wants me
to figure this out
in a very short amount of time
and with no practice.
And it's gonna be shiny!
To get the kinda depth you want
on a lowrider paint job,
it requires a ton of layers.
And I mean a ton of layers.
Let's go again.
Well, the reason why
we're doin' that is,
all finished, you'll be able to
look into the paint job
and you'll think you can grab
somethin' down into it,
like bein' in clear water.
But it'll just be nice and
smooth, like a baby's bottom.
Keep goin', baby.
Just keep goin'.
**
All right, man.
So, remember my crazy
"El Jefe" car?
Yeah.
Yeah, I like this one.
We got a problem in the top.
A while back,
I went to scottsdale
and I got an impala,
which I thought,
on the phone
and through the interwebs,
that I was buyin' a car
on hydraulics.
I think we got a problem.
I thought this was a hydro car.
Nope.
Holy cow.
Turns out,
car does not have hydraulics.
It's got air ride.
I wish it would've been more of
a hydraulic car
'cause I was
really interested in seein'...
Seein' the differences between
the... the cutlass
we're buildin' and this one.
But off it goes.
I think, if we get rid of
the lowrider-esque look and say,
"hey, you know, we've got
a good-Lookin' impala,
and it's on air ride,"
I think I got
a better chance of losin' it
and Makin' a few dollars.
So, take the east L.A.
off of it
and do a little more
west Hollywood?
I'm thinkin', you know,
more Melrose or sunset
- or... or somethin'.
- Okay.
If that car belonged to me,
I would leave the wheels.
But he thinks,
because it has air ride,
that it shouldn't have wires.
I think we should
leave the wires
and take the air ride off
and put hydros on it 'cause,
to me, an impala is a lowrider,
and it should stay a lowrider.
Can you match this paint?
Yeah.
Hey, man. I got this.
As long as they can knock this
out in a couple of days,
we'll be okay.
We'll just fix the paint.
I already ordered the wheels.
We'll chunk those on,
and off we go.
What do you think
this car's worth?
If you were sellin' it to me,
If you're sellin' it
to somebody else, 18.
I know you don't got 10.
I know where you work.
I didn't wanna...
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah, fix it, man.
All right.
**
So I've already been working
for 12 hours
just to get
the first four layers done
on our cutlass for
our lowrider paint job.
But if I wanna finish by
Richard's deadline,
I can't go home until I get
the first layer of green down.
And I can't do that until I get
the design mapped out.
It's late. I'm tired.
Hell, I need help.
What's up, man?
What's up?
If you guys don't recognize
my buddy Tanner,
well, take another look.
He's the one that did
all the cool pinstriping
on the chopped '31.
He's got a lot of experience
in freehand designs.
And I figured, hey, two heads
are better than one, right?
And four hands and whatever else
he can bring in...
Cool.
But, blank canvas.
Yeah, pretty much.
I wanna keep the roof
real simple.
Just, kind of, maybe just even,
straight lines.
I really don't care too much,
you know?
But down here, I would like to
follow the roofline
onto the hood.
Ultimately,
I want the top of our car
covered in multiple panels.
That will give our cutlass
that classic lowrider vibe.
There's no Bible for this look.
It's all custom freehand,
just kinda make it up as you go.
All right. Let's get started.
Cool. Let's do it.
We used pinstriping tape
to outline all the borders
of our panels.
What do you think?
Are we gonna jump it in?
Yeah, I was gonna let this
kinda slide...
Okay.
And keep the line with the hood.
It's gon... it's gonna be
super boring
if it's just straight.
Dang it, just cut myself.
Dude, we're not even halfway
through this,
and I already slit my finger.
It's, like,
bowing out in the front.
Because there's gonna be
layer upon layer,
we really gotta get it right
from the get-go.
It's really kinda scary because
every decision we make impacts
the next one and the next one
and the next one.
Kinda scroll-y,
is kinda what I was thinkin'.
This is where we would map it
out with a ruler.
We ain't got time for that
, bro.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
All right.
What do you think?
Once we commit,
there's no turning back.
Perfect. Perfect.
I actually like that a lot.
I do, too.
Yes.
All right.
Let's get these panels taped up
and, uh, paint this car green.
Next, we have to mask off where
the panels are gonna be 'cause
it's gonna stay silver metal
flake underneath.
It's not, too... Ah,
that up.
The rest of the car,
I'll be paintin' green.
Anyway,
I got some paintin' to do.
And then I might finally
get to go home.
**
You have to tilt it
to get it up here.
Whoo! Hey!
Hey!
Is that the go-go juice
in there?
Yep. That's it.
k*ller.
Since k.C.'S layin' down
the paint, uh, on the cutlass,
then it gives me a chance
to run down
to the spring nationals
down in Houston
and cheer on
my favorite dragster.
This is our third big event,
and, well...
We hadn't made the finals yet.
Come through the rain...
I was 'bout to say...
Here we go. God bless
and godspeed. Right on.
In the words of mc hammer,
"let's turn this mother out."
So when I decided to put a lot
of money in...
Not only into the car,
but into the team,
it was to get the gas monkey
name out there.
I mean,
I'm tryin' to build a brand
not an ego.
Who wants to go racin'?
All right. All right.
Hell, yeah!
But to do that, I gotta make it
all the way through qualifyin'
and make it
to the big show on Sunday.
We're ready.
So we're really
Cuttin' it close.
We just got a few minutes
to get it fired up,
get it to the line
in time to qualify.
Like I said, it's time to fire
this monster up.
What the hell's happenin'?
One of the mags is not
gettin' fire.
Well, this monster...
It's not firin'.
It looks like we're gonna miss
this qualifying round.
Man.
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
Found the problem?
Can the gas monkey
dragster make it to the line?
We got one more chance,
or we go home.
Meanwhile, things are
getting hot in the paint booth.
You said go light.
Do you need a hug?
That's an 8-0-3
on the scoreboard.
By 100th of a second.
Dude, that sucks.
I mean, I didn't even know
you could miss a round.
So, what happens now?
Next run, we got one more
chance, or we go home.
So we're down in Houston at
the, O'Reilly's spring nationals
with the gas monkey dragster.
We wanna qualify
and then race on Sunday.
I mean,
that's what it's all about.
But, uh, we had some problems
with the car,
so we didn't make
the first run today.
Found the problem?
Yeah, we did.
What?
That's a Magneto.
So we just, uh, we're...
We're puttin' on new spark, huh?
Yep.
Such simple things...
That's what it's all about.
Several thousand dollars
and a new Magneto later,
and team's
ready to give it a go.
Man, I gotta say,
it sure feels good
to hear the car fire up
like that.
That's what I'm talkin' about!
Yeah, baby!
Go. Get out. Let's go.
Gotta go right now.
Easy, easy, easy.
Watch your wing.
So here we are.
We got this one last chance
to qualify
for the big show tomorrow.
Y'all goin' too fast, man.
Slow down.
We got one more run, one.
And it's either in or out.
The top 16 racers move on to
the big show,
and we're Lookin'
for a number around 3.8
to get gas monkey in the run.
How the
did we do that?
Turns out that the, uh,
blower belt shredded on us.
We lost all of
our get-up-and-go,
but we finished at 4.01,
which means everything is
probably not very good
right now.
So 4.01 puts us in the runnin',
but there's still
two racers left.
Either one of those kick us out,
we're goin' home early again.
So there you go.
The next two cars that went up,
they both blew their motors.
They're gone.
And that put us in the show.
Tomorrow, we're goin' racin'.
Get you some of that!
Not bad for our third time out.
We'll take the show.
All right.
Go get ready for race day.
It was ugly, but we made it.
Brother, we made it.
Finally! Finally!
I mean,
I am freaking out right now.
Third time out,
we're goin' to the show.
Some of that.
And get this man a cold beer.
I'm ready.
That's it!
**
I got an idea for that panel.
What do you got there,
Richard's scarf?
Lace.
This technique is called
lace paint.
I don't know who came up
with it,
but it's just like it sounds.
Take some lace, lay it out,
spray over it to make a pattern.
It's kinda like doin'
a silk screen.
So while Richard's been down in
Houston Playin' race cars,
Tanner and I have added...
Well, I can't even count
how many different layers
we've put on
our lowrider cutlass.
More.
That's four.
Let's just see
what it looks like.
Hold up.
Dude, I promise.
Right now,
it's all about the detail work.
Every panel on the car,
from the hood to the deck lift,
needs to be filled before we can
give it back to Aaron.
Man, these things flames
gonna be awesome.
Man, you stress out.
You're the one that...
You're that guy that stresses.
I'm not stressed at all.
Are you the stressful guy?
No.
Do you need a hug?
No.
The truth is, Tanner and I have
spent so much time together,
it's startin' to feel like one
of those old, married couples.
That's only about 2 grams.
More.
You said go light.
I... it will be light.
But even if we gotta get
couples counseling,
we're gonna stick it out.
Gotta stay together
for the children,
you know what I mean?
That's what it's all about.
Perfect.
Like Christmas morning.
**
Go!
Pick your feet up!
It's Sunday, man.
We're down in Houston at
the, uh, spring nationals.
And we got "gas monkey Tequila"
on the side of the car.
We're in the hunt.
We're live on the networks,
and we're racin'.
It's beer-thirty.
This is gonna be awesome.
I brought my buddy, Dennis,
and Tommy from 360 wraps
to bask in
the glory of race day.
Number one car...
Number 16 car, which is us...
Both... both from fort worth.
So I'm goin' up against
the number one car.
He's fast. He's good.
Our best run was 3.85.
He ran a 3.73.
I mean, we're talkin'
hundredths of seconds here.
At the end of the day,
we can catch him.
I mean,
it's hundredths of seconds.
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.
**
Doug kalitta
down here at the finish line.
It's shapin' up to be
a pretty fast day here.
Your 3.73 was the track record.
Up next, gonna be
the gas monkey garage team.
Richard rawlings
Hangin' out in the house...
He loves it fast n' loud.
This is one-and-done.
We either win or we go home.
And I am ready to rock, man.
Wow. Track's fast.
Temperature's correct.
Everything's good.
We're gonna do it.
**
It's what we're here for,
brother.
Keep your eye on the track.
**
Great.
We smoked it right out of
the chute, lost traction.
But that's racin'.
And the guy next to us
beat the track record again.
At... at the end of the day,
somebody's gonna win,
somebody's gonna lose.
You just hope for the best.
Well, we didn't
get that.
We the bed.
It's drag racing.
**
Are we centered up-Ish?
Kinda-Ish?
So k.C.'S been Playin' with
the cut dawg
for about a week now.
And even though he's admittedly
a novice at this kinda style,
well, he and Tanner have
absolutely knocked it
out of the park.
I'm pretty happy
with how the paint turned out.
I mean, I think they put a...
One heck of a rush on it.
I-I dig it. I'm... I'm really,
really happy with it.
I wanna get everything
put together
so we can at least see it
on the ground, just...
Oh, sure, sure. Of course.
Yeah. That's the payoff.
Vato-ed out, esé.
Yeah.
It's great.
So when I first tried to install
the rear hydraulic assemblies,
I discovered that there wasn't
quite enough room
underneath the car
to allow the car to sit
as low as I wanted it to.
So I had the guys cut two holes
in the trunk floor,
make little hydro houses.
And that gave the cylinders all
the room they needed to operate.
Installing
the hydraulic assemblies.
All we have to do is reinstall
the hydraulic pumps,
run some hoses, and we're pretty
much ready to test this sucker.
**
Ooh-Hoo-Hoo-Hoo!
Cut dawg!
It's complete.
All right, hombre.
Let's get this thing movin'.
Yeah, we're almost there.
This must be what
Dr. Frankenstein felt like
when he was about to pull
the switch.
Ultimately, we'll be able to
control our hydraulics through
our accuair controller.
But for this first test...
Well, we're just gonna
trigger 'em manually.
All right. Here it goes.
All right.
There you go.
Now hit it again, please.
Excellent.
You got it.
Hey,
it's got an excellent speed.
Yeah.
I think it's gonna be okay.
No,
the speed on it's perfect.
This run here, I need to hold
the trunk for you.
Yeah, no...
No bangin' the dome.
What the, huh?
Cylinder's firin' up
in there like a badass.
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
Charles takes one for the team.
Sucks, man.
And Mike falls in love
over the impala.
"Mike loves keekee"...
Now hit it again, please.
Excellent.
I think it's gonna be okay.
The first test of the hydro
system went off without a hitch,
right up until the part
when the hydraulic lines
blew up in Charles's face.
Sucks, man.
Kinda tough bein'
a monkey sometimes.
It's... it's slippery
around here.
So let's figure out
which part of it gave up.
Not us.
I do ha... I do have to be
honest, I thought it was rad.
So the rear reacted 100%
as it should.
The front moved.
The speed was perfect.
I was really happy with
everything right up until
the point where we exceeded
the threshold of grip
that fitting had on
the end of that hose.
The hoses aren't what
we'd typically run.
We thought we might get
jazzy with this,
and this is unhappy
being jazzy.
Though I was really happy
that it worked for a moment.
But I'll tell you this,
I hate it when stuff breaks,
and it's uneventful.
I love it when crap just comes
flyin' off of a car. So...
And sprays me?
Yeah, that was just a bonus.
Okay, I'm laughing.
But in truth, our situation is
almost as messy
as our cut dawg is.
Let's get it racked,
let's get these hoses off,
and in the mornin'
we'll get 'em dropped off
and get new hoses built.
Okay.
I mean, I've gotta rebuild
and replace all the hoses
and make sure that
our lowrider's ready to
flex its lowrider muscle by
the end of day tomorrow
so that we can make it to
Richard's lowrider gathering
at the bar and grill.
What a mess.
We're gonna need somebody to
detail this, too.
Considering we hadn't even
really begun to run the cut dawg
through its paces
when the lines blew,
we really need our ducks
to line up quickly.
You know what?
I don't wanna be the one to put
a hitch in Richard's Giddyap.
We got 24 hours.
Let's get cleaned up
and get at it.
**
I got a good one for you today,
my man.
Sweet. What you got?
It's a 1938 Mercedes cabriolet.
Ta-Da!
It's green.
I know.
For money, right?
Yeah, green for money.
But, uh,
it's supposed to be black.
And not only that,
it's supposed to have
a really good motor in it,
and it doesn't.
So when Dennis and I picked up
this, uh,
prewar Mercedes for $85,000,
Dennis assured me,
"it's a sure thing!"
Well, that was before
we realized that
the engine was
basically unsalvageable.
It'll run,
but you don't wanna drive it.
So I need to just punt
this car.
Your job's to get it super,
super clean, super good-Lookin',
so that I can overcome
that deficiency.
Right.
Oh, dang.
You got a spotlight and stuff?
Yeah, it's not in bad shape.
No, it's in, actually,
really good shape.
The original plan was to put
a few dollars into it
and get a whole lot
more out of it.
So I'm just hopin' that Brian
from detail werkz
can pretty it up enough
to light up the stars
in some buyer's eyes, and maybe
we can make a few pennies on it.
I mean, we are a business, and
we do need to make money, right?
All right, man.
It's all in your hands.
Take care of it.
Appreciate it.
Call me when you're done,
but I need it fast.
I need to just get off
the car.
Well, I'll hop on it
right now.
Don't hop on the car.
Clean the car.
**
This is what I don't get.
Either it was
where they spot-welded somethin'
underneath that caused the bondo
to come up,
or it's where they tried
pullin' a dent.
But that little spot,
they obviously didn't sand
'cause you can still see
the blue around it.
So on our '64 impala,
Richard asked me if I could fix
the problem spot on the hood.
Looks like I got a little
diggin' to do to see
how bad it actually is.
We could carve stuff in it,
like "Joanie loves chachi."
Or "Mike... Loves... Keekee."
So the spot on the hood is
just some previous body work
that has gone bad.
From the looks of it,
the hood's got a lot of bondo
on it already.
So I think it was just
a poor repair.
I'm gonna try to keep everything
nice and tight and just blend
within the hood so that I'm not
dealin' with the fenders
or the rest of the car.
So with the body work on
the impala done,
I'm now gonna move it
over to the paint booth.
I'm gonna prime it,
and we're gonna match the color
and add a final coat of paint.
Come on in.
You know, if Richard doesn't
think I can afford this car,
at least I can put
my own touches on it.
Who knows?
It might be worth more.
All right, guys.
Richard wants this
by the end of the day.
Please, hurry up.
Yeah, we're almost there.
So, we're just firin' it,
right?
Or, I mean,
just powerin' the hydraulics?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, as usual, we're running
full-speed into a deadline.
And we had to abort our test
because, well, all my sexy hose
in the cut dawg couldn't handle
the pressure.
Charles has been busy
replacin' 'em with some of
their industrial cousins.
So now we're ready to test
the system again.
So... so I'll tell you
what my, uh...
What my big concern is here,
Charles, is that, um,
if we hang a switch too long,
it's, like,
we may find the end of
the capability of the line,
the fitting, the cylinder.
Scary part is
that we may find,
we may experience what
we experienced the other day.
Um, so we'll see.
I just don't know.
Thanks to the vagaries
in sir Richard's schedule,
it needs to be ready for
a lowrider car show tomorrow,
and I haven't even fully tested
the hydraulic system.
We can blow up a line.
We can blow up a cylinder.
We could tear a shock off
the car.
Got me once,
you ain't gonna get me again.
Yeah, you...
Hey, you're a smart man.
You know what?
I ain't messin' around
this time.
You got a raincoat?
Oh, how exciting.
We ready?
Wait!
Let's clear the arms out.
You got both your side clear?
Yeah, you're clear now.
All right.
Here goes Nothin'.
Yeah, I-I like that speed.
I'm pretty happy watchin'
the rears work.
That's all.
They're done up there.
You see 'em through the trunk?
Oh, yeah.
Movin' nice and free.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
See what I was talkin' about
on the... on the motion?
It's not excited.
All the motions seem
real controlled.
Your spring compresses,
and then the shock, uh,
controls the unload on it.
Okay.
Let's see the front.
Ha! Good.
I couldn't be happier with that.
I'd say that's, uh,
ride height right there.
I wanna see what down is.
k*ller, yeah.
Yeah, that's good.
Sweet.
Ah! That's excellent!
Ha! I'm so happy.
Hold on.
I know what's happening.
We're still clear.
Yeah.
It'll... it'll...
It'll roll like that.
It's about a finger,
I mean, at my knuckle.
It's rollin'.
I just really couldn't be
more happy.
Everything is functioning
exactly the way I want it to.
I like that fluidity
right there.
God, it's got such
a good stance.
It's... it's really good.
I'm so happy!
You guys k*lled it. Whoo!
We're so happy,
the way they move...
I have a lot of cars in my head,
a lot of things I wanna build.
And sometimes, in my head,
they're cooler than they might
be in real life, but this is
definitely not one of 'em.
Yeah,
I'm freakin' pumped, man.
I could not be
happier right now!
I don't know what the rest of
the world's gonna think,
but in a few hours,
I guess we'll find out.
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
Bam!
Richard's on a mission
to unload the impala.
I'll sell it to you.
Take it outta your check.
Nah, I ain't doin' that.
And the lowrider faces
its toughest critics.
The answer when we come back...
The answer is d.
Hilary swank and her mom lived
in their cutlass supreme
in Hollywood when she was 16.
Bam!
Is that what
we're puttin' on it?
Heck, yeah, it is.
That'll improve the look
a little bit.
Yeah, those look good.
While Aaron's buildin'
the cutlass into a lowrider,
I'm gonna take
the "El Jefe" impala
and put some wheels on it
and make it more like a hot rod.
How's the paint work?
It's done. So...
Do a little paint on the hood,
and it should be ready to go.
Looks good.
Yeah, that'll work.
How come we didn't fix
this crack?
'Cause you told me not to.
I did not.
I just saw that crack
for the first time.
Somebody told me not to fix...
They said, "fix the hood."
So that's what I fixed
was the hood.
I really didn't ever see it
till just now.
Yeah, I was told,
"just fix the hood."
By who?
You.
Crack or not, I want some wheels
on the impala,
and I want it out the door.
I mean,
I need to get this thing sold.
And for once, I'd like some
money flowin' in instead of out.
Can we get it on the other side
and get the wheels
and tires on it?
Yeah.
This is a good car, I think.
Yeah,
I wouldn't mind havin' it.
I'll sell it to you.
I know you will.
I'll even tote the note.
Take it outta your check.
Nah, I ain't doin' that.
What do you think, Iggy?
I like 'em.
You sure?
Yeah.
I didn't even know he talked.
He barely talks.
We shoulda fixed
the crack.
Get it over here
so we can get wheels on it.
Okay.
He always finds somethin',
doesn't he?
Didn't he say,
"don't fix that"?
**
**
Boom! So here we are
at gas monkey bar n' grill.
Got a little lowrider show
goin' on,
got some of the local car clubs
out and for one reason
and one reason only,
and that's to show off
our '78 cutty,
known to you as the cut dawg.
At gas monkey garage,
you never know where one car's
gonna take you to the next one.
We built a green model "a"
a while back,
and the guy that actually
ended up buying the model "a"...
Gave us a holler because, uh,
his mom decided she wasn't gonna
be drivin' anymore,
and she had this really nice
'78 cutlass, green on green,
which immediately got
my attention.
And I ended up
picking the car up for $3,500.
And that's where I come into
the story.
I've had an itch I haven't been
able to scratch
for a very, very long time.
I desperately wanted to
build a lowrider.
He started tellin' me
that he was going to fabricate
some really crazy parts for it
that were gonna make it better
and smoother
and faster driving
than any of the other lowriders
out there.
And I started thinkin',
"god, this is gonna cost me
a lot of money, isn't it?"
**
One of the neat things was,
the car really was
in great shape.
In fact, I drove it home
from the guy's house
and, to my surprise,
it actually drove just fine.
So we can get right into
the cool
because we didn't have to
fix too many things.
And the interior was already
in exceptional shape,
so we didn't
need to visit sue.
Boy,
is she gonna be mad at us.
Yep.
When it came to getting
the supplies we needed to
put our car on hydraulics,
my first call
was to hydroholics.
He set us up with our pumps
and the rest of the things that
we needed to get
our hydraulic system
off the ground and running.
Since we didn't wanna hop
the car
and we didn't wanna
three-wheel it,
we knew we didn't need either
We decided to go with
a little bit simpler setup,
and run two batteries,
two pumps,
and combo valves on it.
On top of that,
since the results with
our accuair have been so high,
with all of our...
With our air ride cars,
we incorporated that technology
to control our hydraulics.
All the parts are beautiful.
They look great back there.
And the most important part,
they do the job correctly.
But one of the biggest
differences between our car
and a traditional lowrider
are the things you won't even
know to look for.
Once again, the idea was to
build a very comfortable,
cruising, smooth-riding car that
was still on hydraulics
and still was a lowrider.
So with all these things on
the plate, we dug in.
First, I decided to update
the control arms and sway bars
with ridetech components.
So we really do have
a performance-orientated
suspension.
But when it came time to marry
the rest of the suspension to
the hydraulics
to get the ride I wanted,
I needed to get a little
more inventive.
We started off with some parts
that were already available.
We used chrome cylinders.
And then we used power ba*ls on
the base of our cylinder.
And then we moved the coil
spring on top of the cylinder.
On top of that, we had to build
a-a bearing casing
with a nylon slider.
With all these things put
together and placed in the car,
it actually allows
the hydraulic cylinder to act as
a coilover
without the dampening ability.
Problem is, we still have to
dampen the suspension.
So for that, we used fox shocks
from ridetech
all the way around.
To tell you the truth,
I was a little nervous.
But I'm pretty happy
the way it came out.
So we come to putting
sneakers on our ride.
I know they probably should've
been spokes,
and they probably
should have been 13s,
but you know what?
I've got such a love affair
with supremes
that they were
the only one for me.
And I know that they don't
"go hard in the 'hood,"
but then again,
we're not in the 'hood.
So U.S. wheel took care of us,
and we got an unbelievable set
of 14-inch supremes for this.
They absolutely nailed it.
And as far as I'm concerned,
this is the perfect look for
this perfect car.
After nailin' all that stuff,
gettin' the car goin' up
and down,
ridin' on all that cool
rollin' stock,
threw it back there to k.C.
And our buddy Tanner.
And together the team were able
to throw down this paint job.
Uh, it was a pretty cool process
that I'd never seen before
and we had never done.
But, I tell you,
they pulled it off.
This is about as cool as
anything I've ever seen come
out of gas monkey garage.
So we started off
with a great car,
had a good concept,
and it made its way
all the way to fruition.
And here we are.
I tell you,
I-I love this car.
I couldn't be more stoked on
how it turned out.
This should yield,
uh, I mean,
a great-driving car
for a lot of years to come.
And I'll tell you,
from my experience
with it already,
it's a heck of a lot of fun.
This thing rides
like a cream puff. I love it.
Now, the bad part is,
you went over budget.
So I think you're gonna have to
jump on the ol', uh, impaletero,
little thing there
and sell some popcorn.
Ching, Ching!
Ching, Ching!
Yeah! Exactly.
You know, the problem with me
and ice cream is,
I'll probably eat
all the profits, though.
At least we got the word out.
I'm still not positive we can
make some money on it,
but we're tryin'.
I think, uh,
now it's my favorite part.
You're drivin'?
I'm drinkin'.
I'll be at the bar
when you're ready.
Let's do it.
Sure you don't wanna go ahead
and buy this car?
Sure make my life easier.
Nope.
Sucks for you.
Coming up on "fast n' loud"...
That's how I sell
everybody else.
Richard takes Mike for a ride.
Yeah, I hate to just sell this
thing too cheap...
And christie uncorks
the gas monkey genie,
but it's Tony who rubs Richard
the wrong way.
No.
Just come here and just rub this
spot right here.
Gross.
A test of Patience here.
I'm gonna be here
for the next week.
Hey, Mike,
will you hold this down?
Yeah, I gotta go get the other
half of the cup.
I think I just got duped 'cause
this is gonna take forever.
You wanna do me a favor?
Will you hold this
for just a second?
All right.
I'll be right back.
Mike?
Mike.
Suckas!
**
So the '64 impala
that I got for 22 grand
from my buddy out in,
uh, scottsdale...
Cory fixed the paint.
We slapped some new wheels
on it.
Should be ready to go.
It's not ever gonna be
a perfect show car.
It's just a cool, old car that
you can have some fun with.
Just have a good time
and enjoy it.
Wow! Is it done?
Yep.
Those wheels look way better
than those 13s.
They look good,
but I like the other ones, too.
Dude, I think it's rad.
I'm just gonna have Tony
picture it up,
stick it on the net
for sale.
Before you do that, you know
I mentioned that I liked it.
Well, everybody likes it,
'64 impala.
Well, say I'm interested
in buyin' it.
What would it take?
Seriously, though,
'cause I've been savin'.
I-I got a little cheddar
stashed away.
I'm gonna have 25, 26 grand
in this car.
I'm gonna need to make profit,
so...
You know,
if Mike coy can step up,
I don't care
who the customer is.
Step up and buy it.
Let me think about it.
Lemme go for a ride in it first
'cause I ain't even driven it
with these wheels on it.
You're just gonna hate
the way it rides.
I've always been a '60s
kinda car guy.
And I've always liked
the '64 impala.
I want him to sell it to me.
**
I'm tryin' to
make some money, man.
I gotta pay your salary.
Nah, I get that.
And if you're talkin' about
buyin' a car like this,
I might be payin' you
too much.
I don't know, man.
It's a good car.
It's nice.
It's a nice car,
but it's not perfect.
I mean...
You know, he's on the fence
on whether or not
he's gonna sell me the car.
He thinks he can get a little
more somewhere else and...
To be honest with you,
there are still a couple small,
little issues that need
fixing on the car.
Air ride.
Where's the shocks at?
Probably could use some shocks.
It could use some shocks.
I don't know, dude.
I hate to just sell
this thing too cheap
'cause I don't mind
helpin' a brother out,
but this is the money in
the bank for gas monkey.
I like it a lot.
**
Laid out, big wheels,
silver, pinstriped...
There's still the vibration
in the floor.
I know it's a muffler,
but it still shouldn't be
bouncin' off
the bottom of the floor.
And we got the paint chips.
And we got the stripes
that could go.
But then,
those stripes could stay, too.
But I do need to
fix the paint stuff.
And I need to fix
the muffler.
But I can sell it
just like this for...
I guarantee you I can get
Oh, come on. Not with those
blemishes and stuff.
I step in,
try to get a knockout,
hit him real low like
he does people...
You ain't saved
enough cheddar.
'Course it didn't work.
I'll split the difference with
you because it's you.
And I'll go 28,
but that's cash-a-ronis,
and I don't wanna carry no note
or take anything out of a check
or any of that.
All right.
I think I got that.
You think so?
Wait,
you think you got it here?
So we ended up
Makin' a deal at 28 grand.
What really surprised me was
that not only did he really have
true interest in the car,
but he had the cash.
Are you hidin' money up here?
If I hide it at home,
my wife would spend it.
How much is that?
So there's...
He had most of the money here.
He said
he'll bring the rest tomorrow.
Now, what I'm interested
to find out is,
what is he gonna do
when he drives it home to mama?
I mean, he's probably gonna tell
her he paid, like,
And she's gonna be all amazed
that it's such a beautiful car
for so cheap. But...
I'll get the title for you.
Nice doin' business with you.
Thanks, Richard.
Don't think I'm not gonna go
through this place like crazy
when you leave.
Got me a car.
Yeah.
**
Richard.
Sir.
Hey, I've got some good news.
Well, I like good news.
The '38 Mercedes...
Yeah?
Uh, I found a buyer for it.
Yeah.
Got it sold and...
Did you get the hundred
and quarter for it?
Got 125.
Pow!
I paid $85,000
for this Mercedes.
And I thought we were gonna have
to dump it,
just because it
had a bad motor.
Well, Makin' it shine
like a diamond
in a goat's a*s paid off,
because Tony found a collector
that saw the sparkle
and had to have it.
So runnin' or not, Whoo!
Get you some of that.
How you gonna get rid of
the cutlass?
Oh, the lowrider?
Yeah, the cut dawg.
Uh, I don't have anybody
on that car.
I mean, I've shown it
to a few people,
but thinkin' about doin'
somethin' a little different.
Lemme show you
what I did come up with.
It's somethin' I think you
might like.
We made a little commercial
for it.
What?
Check that out.
What is
this really weird lamp?
One thousand years
I've been in there.
And for setting me free,
I'll Grant you three wishes.
I am the gas monkey
garage sales genie.
I always wanted a lowrider
with crazy, cool paint job.
That's one!
It needs to be affordable
and well-built.
That's two!
And how 'bout
a one-of-a-kind suspension?
And that's three! Shazam!
That is awesome.
It's perfect.
But how does someone like me
get a car like that?
You know where to find us.
It's on the Internet.
Okay. How do I get you back
in this bottle?
All you have do is come here
and just rub this spot
right here...
Gross, Tony. I'm done with
your stupid commercial.
Just sell the car.
I never have any fun.
Shazam!
No.
No?
Who do you think you are,
tricky Tony?
Good thing you led in
with the Mercedes bein' sold.
Okay.
I'm dockin' you
for that company time.
**
'78 cutlass...
Richard's plan to
build gas monkey's first-ever
lowrider started out on
a high note with a '78 cutlass.
$3,500 it is.
A prewar Mercedes
he bought with Dennis
upped his attitude even more...
We got a deal.
Thank you.
Keeping him from
feeling let down on a deal
for a '67 impala that turned out
to be full of hot air.
I thought this was a hydro car.
But Richard was the real boss
when he sold the impala
for $28,000.
On the downside, Richard's bank
account started to dip
as the cutlass expenses
piled up.
A full hydraulic package
and controls,
new front and rear suspension,
and new wheels were all Richard
thought Aaron would need to get
this lowrider off the ground...
Yikes.
Until a custom paint job
blew up
Richard's original budget.
Richard's top fuel dragster
failed to make the grade.
But he scored
a come-from-behind victory
when Tony found
the '38 Mercedes a new home.
Pow!
After throwing a party
at the gas monkey bar n' grill,
Richard failed to turn up
a buyer for this lean,
green, lowriding machine.
They took to the interwebs with
a cut-rate commercial
to sell
this crazy cool cut dawg.
Shazam!
Whoa, man!
All told, Richard's
epic lowriding adventure
gives Richard a bunch of reasons
to sharpen his sales pitch.
That was horrible, dude.
All right. Well...
You know where to find
gas monkey on the old interwebs.
It's our first lowrider.
It is for sale.
So, uh, step up and buy it.
Save Tony's job.
I like my commercial, though.
You didn't like that?
No.
I'm borderline firin' you
right now.
All right.
I won't do that again.
