05x29 - The Levi Hale Story

Post by bunniefuu »

It. You

must be Christopher Hill. That's right.

Wharton Packer can mix it up, please.

Thank you.

Open for me to hear?

In a minute.

Oh. Before he comes.

You know the condition the governor made?

Condition?

I understood it was to be a full pardon.

It isn't a pardon at all.

He's being paroled in your custody.

You're responsible for him.

If he wants to stay out of jail or worse,
you'll have to make sure

that he.

Ten years,

a long time career is over now.

I thank God for that.

It's not quite over.

Sit down, gentlemen.

What do you mean, not quite over, Warden,

But as you know, your brother received

a life sentence
without possibility of pardon.

So the governor couldn't have let him go
scot free, even if he wanted to.

He didn't.

He didn't even want to parole him.

There's a lot of feeling here
in Wyoming about your brother, Levi.

I had to persuade him.

How come you were on my side?

Well, I'm not particularly.

I just didn't want to see you die
in my prison.

I don't think any man deserves to die
in prison.

Whatever he's done.

Well, is he?

Are you sick, Levi?

I need glasses, I guess.

So now I'm a bad man without, like,
anything else.

I last.

And until what?

You're not still harboring
any ideas of revenge.

My memory must be it
or anybody still alive

who is mixed up in that business.

Where's your train now?

About ten miles east of here.

Which means how many days
until you'll get into Utah?

Three. Four. If we run into each other.

Make it three.

If you have to go through floods
or tornadoes or help fire itself.

That's the condition I was talking about.

He's got to get out of Wyoming
and stay out for the rest of his life

so long as he does. He's a free man.

But if he ever set
foot in this territory again,

we'll hang him.

You made any plans, Levi?

I'm ten years older than you, Chris.

Look 20 and feel about 50.

You make me 100 and something,

man. That over on my class

and let me make them for us.

What alone in the world Last to the hills.

We should be together.

San Francisco's nice town.

I think you like it.

We could do well together there.

Made your point, Chris.

Almost a thousand miles away.

And take an awful long rope
from here to strike my neck.

There.

Forget it.

I've got to get home.

You mean you've given up?

I've given up making plans
and a whole set of them.

Once future all laid out like a map

of crazy mob
and along rubbed out that map,

leaving
only the dirty fingerprints on my life.

No, it won't make any plans, Grace.

We just take things that go along
one mile on,

and they'll.

Get a couple.

How we put that?

I mean, what's our attitude?

No attitude, Charlie.
You just act real pleasant.

Say howdy and warn them at your.

Stu's about ready. What do you mean, warn?

Well, at least put him on his guard.

One of his bail hawks.

My brother, Levi. Levi. Oh,

Charlie was obviously Levi most exposed.

Cooking. You won't soon forget.

Oh. Oh, what a big train you got here,
Chris.

We've all carried out a little over 300,

so it all started, Joe.

Most of them
we picked up a few in Nebraska.

Bill and Charlie already know about you.

Levi, a good friend of mine.

I want to be a good friend of
yours. So he had to be told.

I don't think
there's any danger of anybody finding out.

Even remember,

most folks can't even remember
what they had for supper, let alone

remembering what happened in a little town
in a remote place ten years ago.

Mr. Hale,

Ray Gray.

That's not gray, Levi.

That's Duke Shannon, our young scout.

My brother, Levi.

Duke. Oh,

I'm sorry.

How long you.

Excuse me, sir. Did I hear right?

Levi, hear.

The Levi here?

Well, I know all about you, sir.

What do you want to do?

Oh, the bell mayor was fighting
with one of the stallions.

I separated him.

I think he's hurt.

You'd like to take a look.

Think I have a deal?

I'd just like to say, sir,
it's been a great honor meeting you.

Come on.

He's nice enough, kid.

I wouldn't say he makes the most sense
of anybody I've ever met.

Probably.

Don't you confused somebody else.

Same fare and same right colored eyes.

So much like.

Gray.

Let's get somebody.

Levi.

What did you mean?

That you knew all about Levi?

Hell, doesn't everybody.

That's a terrific story, isn't it?

I mean, about what he did,
how you might say it's terrific.

I mean, that liniment girl had no idea
he was Chris's brother.

You know, he was a pretty common name.

And I thought Chris, his family were all
wiped out in that Apache m*ssacre.

I guess Levi wasn't there at the time.

Lucky thing for him.

Yeah, you can call it lucky. All right.

How come you know all about this?

This happened
a long time ago. My grandpa told me

you kept saying gray to me.

What gray mean?

You might say who instead of what?

Grayson. Heil Levi's son.

Duke.
You better keep this quiet about Levi.

That's as far as
the rest of the train is concerned.

Chris wants it that way.

Sure.

You know.

Everybody know it won't take a mind up
in a partner later.

Seems to me. Like the good Lord
to save everybody a lot of trouble.

We've had these things out
without feathers.

But one thing I hate of.

You know, Johnny could have made a lot
easier if he had hatched them already.

Cook Yeah, that way you wouldn't

go through all his work
and we wouldn't be getting that heartburn.

No chicken. What's the occasion?

LEVI You know, we've been eating garbage
for years, don't you?

Yeah, I know. I saw.

I mean, some of yours do this afternoon.

He had a real pained expression
on his face.

Yeah, I know.

He's got a few worries. Private Eye Doc.

Hello, Root.

Why? I'm so hungry, I could eat better.

Hey, you wouldn't set up for chicken,
would you?

I certainly would. About my favorite. You.

What would you like it with you.
But gravy and and.

And dumplings, the things.

And maybe I'll throw
in a couple of drumsticks.

Do you got me drooling or.

Okay, just drool on that.
What do you want?

A black.

Hey. And another thing, Duke
take away from and wait for you black.

One thing.

I don't like it.

The man from a camp to get my beard.

You know, Charlie

Duke told me that his granddad
told him all about Levi.

Every still to know about Gray.

You've seen the kind of admire
what Levi had done.

You know, maybe Levi had a cause
for what he did, but

still m*rder.

Oh, boy, I didn't. Levi

gave me this.

Oh, what a small go.
And some time he ran off.

I borrowed right from firewood.

I got it right here on Levi.

You know, one time.

Levi, bring it down and put some lard
on it to kind of stop the pain.

No pain,

no straw in my hand
a couple of months ago.

Carving and fill it in here.

Well,
this will keep it from blistering anyway.

Don't hurt,

but thank you.

You're welcome.

Levi.

Bernie's Hannigan.

All I saw at a small stroke.

Older men
get up some time, sometimes to clear up.

Sometimes they get worse.

Half blind get confused.

So that's why they let him go.

You get rid of him before he died.

You just have to take care of.

Him, that's all.

I told. You.

Everything's right.

Oh, for God's creatures,

you're right.

Or don't you want it?

Or the other one? No.

All right. No.

That's not gray.

That's Duke.

Shannon

Gray dead,

right? Huh?

Oh, my mind's going to

fall on this guy
in a little creepier nature

course, Gray.

That gray

kind,

though, tells me you said your grandfather
told you all about my brother.

Just what did he say?

That Levi here was one of the greatest
lawman Westerners ever? No,

that's true, isn't it?

That's true.

One of the greatest lawmen in the West

has ever known.

And Shannon Graham,

I know your grandpa well.

A good friend.

You are Jim Bridger second grandpa said.

And he was. Let me see.

Now, you saw a mapped out the route
the party took and did the trapping and

that's what he said

to me.

The latter speak.

And as you know, this fellow, a boy,
and once had the army marched on the

stomach, were available through, I think,
and I'm sure made us get out of that.

I mean, he was the cook like Wooster.

Exactly.

Like Worcester, kind,
goodhearted hearted, sincere

and a lousy cook.

So get along like two peas in a bottle

that was the authority man.

Lately,

if you're married before.

Well, and I was no strings for sure.

The Wyoming border, come sundown
tomorrow, will be in.

Utah.

Or the weather in Dallas.

Oh, after.

It all, came to the Great Salt Lake City.

And then the river is going to split up
right here.

Stay. And so you don't

expect any kind of favorite Indian gal

three or more again at one time,

because some of them are very beautiful.

My wife was upon his daughter

when she read of her name.

She died when our boy was born.

I named you Matthew

Grace and

Grace and Hail.

Grandpa said you became a woman.

You were a U.S.

marshal, weren't you?

My moderate,
from when I first been that bad. You.

He said your territory was all in Nebraska
territory down to Oklahoma.

You said you are the greatest town
tamer in history.

Said when you'd enter a town
before you were through with it,

eating out of your hand,
he said you became a living legend.

Wait a minute.

Don't make me sound like Moses
bringing the tablets down from Sinai

and bringing
certain not along where it was needed.

And then he said, You disappeared Suddenly

nobody heard about anymore.

What happened?

When I retire,

Who could put it that way?

Retired from the law of the hour,
I get a little tired.

I'm going to lie down

and rewrite.

You catch cold standing there.

Once you get back in bed

with a night like this.

When they k*ll Gray,

whenever I hear some memory

come back like a blow.

I came to take you.

And so they never got him.

They had knocked me unconscious.

And tied me up

before

I came to you and gone

with Gray.

He was so mad.

I planted that tree the day he was born.

This is

as old as he was.

So remember.

A tree hanging from.

It. That night to

the night he died.

Right then struck me

after I got in the.

And you hear that?

Oh, yeah.

And if you had an issue in order for it
to pass all this much,

it might not have happened.
I wouldn't have busted my hair.

You get a picture with Paul,
not give you a five minute

press.

You can't fix that.

We'll in 5 minutes and you know it all.

They'd better.

We're still 20 miles short
of being in a Utah, and the last night's

drama slowed us down.

So we got to get out of Wyoming.

Oh, I'm sorry about

I had a bad night last night
and had a late great death all over again.

Well, they can't do anything to him unless
he comes back into our own territory.

We're not even through it yet.

I'm sure I feel better
when we are through it.

Where is he?

All right. Back in the wagon
to sleep. The last I saw.

And I kind of hoped,
sort of adopting Bill.

Tell his memory of it, but it hasn't even
on his mind wanders and he gets confused.

Something down
deep in him. Still remember?

Well, I'm going to help him.

This wheel.

I'm going to see that Mr.

Levi is treated like a gentleman,
but it's going to be a separate event.

And I said, Oh, he's not sick.

He's not really in bed.
He just said, even getting dressed.

So I told him to stay in the wagon, rest
and not wait on him.

It's all still perking up.

Do you want to bet

Duke should be back by now?

Does the females the borders?

And this is back.

You'll be soon, Chris.

If he finds it. Go on. Open.
You going to move the train out tonight?

I might.

People tuckered out.

They're going to holler about it.

I won't. And they'll have to holler.

I just got to feel in my bones.

I want to get out of here.

How is it

the trail washed out
practically all the way

and there's a bad rockfall,
you know, doing a lot of trouble.

To the right and matter.

I am.

Oh, we got held up down on

Sheriff of Rock Springs, northeast of here
three days ago.

Large gold shipment
just been delivered to the bank. That.

Too, man.
We got a real good. Description of.

Them. A short, skinny one
and a big fat one. Bald.

Last we heard,
they were headed for your train.

We thought maybe they might be on it now.

I don't think so.

Nobody left the train
in the vicinity of Rock Springs.

Nobody's joined up since Nebraska.

Nobody's taking any side trips
for the last month.

You know, first Haley.

That's right.

I heard about you off
and on one way or another.

And no joiners at. All in Wyoming. No,

nobody resigned.

Nobody went off on any,
let's say, picnics.

No, no.

Well, we'll take a look around anyway.
All right.

That's a minute by one of authority.

This little piece of common
metal is the authority.

One of disputed Mr.

Haig.

Yeah, well, I'm getting all fat

and retired, but rights got nothing to.

Retire to

all own this world.

I live off work, and I die.

And I it.

And I'm not just here. Hey.

Yeah, I heard that name a lot.

You had a great tragedy in your life,
didn't you?

Or your whole family wiped out
in the Indian m*ssacre?

I don't think I care to discuss
my personal affairs with you, Sheriff.

You got a right not to.

Fact is, I'm just making talk.

My boys get back.

Yes. Your wife, two children,

Sister in law, one of your brothers.

I had a similar last one.

All the family.

I had a daughter.

Indian k*lled her 210 years ago.

We had a lot in common.

Mistake.

They had to eat The one grown woman now

married for sure.

Because she was a real pretty girl.

Likely.

I have been a grandfather,

but I'm not.

I'm. I'm nothing.

I'm a fat, lonely old man.

You're well, RUDGE Yes, I'm well. Rose

We only have a couple of times.

I was good many years ago.

You led the mob.

At least leave my son.

Watch your language, Chris Heil. Yes.

I help pull the rope on Gray. Gladly.

The juried found him innocent.

He was Levi Heil, son.

He couldn't have committed any m*rder.

He was guilty as pain.

No body was lynched. Mr.

Heil, Justice was done that stormy night.

Only justice. Well,

zero.

Right.

Lead wagon being served is supper
like a lord.

Well, I'm afraid we lied to you, Mr.

Heil. We didn't have. Any hold up.

We just had to have an excuse
to go through your train.

Gov notified us Levi was on it.

We had to make sure we aren't
even out of Wyoming yet.

You can't touch him
unless he comes back in.

I know it's too bad.

And it should have been that anybody
that spots him.

Any place at all brings him up.

You get off my train.

Not yet.

Levi.

Levi.

Heil. Oh,

Will you want to see me?

Well, you don't look good, Levi.

You don't look good at all.

Now, you promised me one thing.

Don't you die.

Don't you die yet?

I hadn't planned to.

I'm glad to hear that.

Because when you
die, got to be at my hands.

All right.

You're a coincidence.

Well,
that's just how I had it planned for you.

I got three of you murderers.

But before I could find you,
I got stopped.

Right now,
I'm going to get another chance at you.

You care to take it now?

We might get interfered with

folks.

Not concerned might get hurt.

Oh, this is private
and personal between you and me.

Well,

I got to k*ll you.

He's going to k*ll me.

One of us will do it.

I'll see you.

Make it soon, Levi.

We're going into Utah tonight.

In a mood

during the row tonight.

Glad to guard him
all the way to California

Here.

This is an old dead feud, Levi.

How long ago should be forgotten by now?

Forget it.

My son was m*rder*d.
And forgive his assassin.

There were 20 of them.

You said, Levi,

you're going to spend the rest
of your life not much left of it to spend.

Most of them was just a

mob led on by Will run.

And then we'll just do a lark hoedown
or a chivalry.

Somebody started playing the finale
to probably been satisfied

with a square dance.

Instead, none of them were even
on the jury to let him go.

So Bardwell
and the sheriff stirred him up.

So I came to agree.

I got the sheriff

and his men was out of town.

But I know where he is now.

Mob don't come.

I'm not going to let you go on
with this, Levi.

I'm going to stop you.

I hardly see how you can.

I'm going to set up a night and day

watch on somewhere
between here and San Francisco.

Opportunity presented itself.

Oh. It's great.

I guess we're having a rockslide.
Duke was talking about.

You better come up. Oh.

You ought to stay here, Levi.

And I want you to promise
I just had an opportunity and presented so

dryly. Yes, sir.

Then you. Can hear. The script.

What you.

Yes, sir.

Stay in here, dope, and see that he stays
here.

Sir, we're always on Utah,
just across the border.

There's a horse out there. My.

Oh, no, please, sir.

I can't let you do that.

Chris was.

Give me a line.

You wouldn't sh**t me
if I made a break for it, would you?

Oh, no, sir.

I couldn't do that.

Whatever you want me to see,

Mr. Hale, this.

Sorry, son.

I'll try to make it up to you later.

And you?

What did you expect him to do?

But sh**t your own brother?

If you ask me, no one is asking a jolly.

I'm fine with that.

We make it crisp.
We leave here about ten miles south.

It's like that whole mountain slid in.

Oh. Is your horse?

Yes, I do,

sir. John, I saw some tracks.

Might have been.

Leave us there. Heading due east.

He's a dying man set on getting revenge

on another old man who sat on hanging.

It's all wrong.

I can't let that happen.

Now you're in charge.

Keep moving. I'll catch up with you.
You helping Johnny?

We have, sir.

You lost Levi.

Duke, you better help me find him.

I lost friends.

It's possible for two men to be.

You mean my brother. Well, run.

Well, it was deputy right hand

rode together and brought law together.

Levi,
still carrying a b*llet meant for a well.

Will, has a scar an inch from his heart.

Or he stopped a knife. Paiute rode Levi.

You folks used to joke thing.

They were so close together
they cast only one shadow.

Now they're

aiming to k*ll each other.

I'm not too clear on all the reasons why.

It's got something to do with Gray,
hasn't it?

I don't have anything to do with you.

Levi's mind.

At least it keeps confusing you with Gray.

I look like you did great
yellow hair eyes about your color.

In spite of his mother's blood, he didn't
look any more Indian than you do.

It was tall, strong,
Well, favorite like you.

But he had one flaw.
I don't think you have.

He was sick in the head.

Gray hair was mad

right?

Thirsty too. Boy.

I'm hungry too.

Like any grass.

Please.

I do. I

like canteens in the horses.

A little red

tracks around here at all.

They must have passed by pretty close.

I wonder why it didn't stop water.

Probably didn't even see the pond

on your mind.

Do keep me awake
most of the night wondering.

Of course, it's none of my business.

You don't have to tell me
if you don't want to.

But my gray

wandering life,

he was out of his mind and put him away.

I never knew, ever even suspected

I should be.

He used to get into fights, keep
beating up on his opponent

even after he hollered, quit
the hammering automobile.

He was half dead.

Levi used to say it was just high
spirited,

strong kid glorying in the strike

rate of his wife was dead.

The only thing Levi had,

you know,

love and hate had one thing in common,

and he had everything
except what you want to see.

Falls all your hate,
the perfection of those you love.

I don't know how much praying
Levi ever did, but if he ever thank God,

was for giving him such a golden son,

he never knew.

Deep down inside, he must have wondered.

You remember when you were plucking
those chickens, only letting you?

Oh, most kids are cruel and unthinking,
sort of away like they hurt

small animals, beat up on each other,
but they grow out of it.

Gray never did.

He got worse.

Maybe the best break Levi ever had
was when they hang their son.

You know, too young to know Duke.

But a man has to hang on
to some illusions.

Can't stand being alive.

With luck, Levi will go to his grave

thinking his son was crucified saint

instead of what he really was
a brutal, savage m*rder*r.

Who did he k*ll?

The girl.

He was going to marry Millie Rud,

Sheriff Will's daughter.

On a name like.

Were brother and.

Well, Rodney,
tell me it was terrible. Rock Rain.

That's what he had. It

was. My horse.

All right.

Oh, you. I was thrown in 80 heard round.

He's walking 80 miles in his condition

on a night like that.

Oh well,

well,

well now.

He's back the window

pulls back.

What are you talking about, Levi?

I just saw him.

Well,

certainly they're coming to k*ll my boy.

Well.

There's iron in the earth, and I this room

with Bob collect a pair of

that raw.

I'll get it.

Well,

we'll always remember even the old days,
even when they were K*llers.

Even when we k*lled.

Only when we had to and hated it

like a banner.

We can't.

Help stop. Them.

We stopped them. Other times.

The places that sneak thief.

We want the old man like you and me.

Well, it don't matter

where the young man died.

Young souls have to go for the Lord.

That's true. What have we done?

Do you know what your son did?

That's what I come in for.

We're praying, my boy.

Help me.

I'm taking

Chris.

Your brother.

He came back into Wyoming territory.

He was told not to.

I'm not going to let you hang him.

I obey the law.

He'll be hanged.

You read him?

Well, I saw your face.

Read him? Of course. I was leading it.

He k*lled my daughter.

Chris, what are we doing?

Are you there? Are we where?

You came back into Wyoming, Levi,
We found you.

And, well, Rudge here.

It's good to children

here out there.

Say prayer.

And Marion, four months,
In spite of your objections.

In spite of your right in blood.

Oh, I pay no mind.

His Indian blood. Why?

I stood up for you
when you're married. His mother.

I flat broke down when I call him a breed.

Or are you a quarter man?

He wouldn't want a kid.

You wouldn't let him play with that?

He was cruel.

Even to her.

Sometimes I was afraid for you.

She wasn't afraid.

I try to elope to get away from you.

He pretended to elope
so he could k*ll her.

That was an accident that.

Tipped over the current.

They were both strong swimmers
and his face was all scratched

when he came back with that lying story
where she fought him off.

Great.

So when they found her,
her body was all covered with bruises

where he had beaten her.

There were rocks and.

Rubble of holes.

He was tossed up against them.

He was found on the bar, saw
her body, was never near those rocks.

He k*lled her because he was a monster.

Somewhere in the back of your mind.

You knew that. But you buried it.

Because you didn't dare face it.

He hated every thing on every body.

That's partially his name. All right.

So tell me you didn't know that.

The Indian in him was stronger
than his other blood?

The bad Indian Nicolo part,
the savage parts.

He'd been called names when he was a boy
by other boys, white boys.

He had custody.

And when he grew older, his hatred
grew stronger.

Your son hated you

because you were white.

Agreement drunk.

One night at the China saloon,
he yelled it out so everybody could hear.

Oh, no, we didn't tell you.

It was so. Shocking.

Behold! Liar!

Ryan, cover up the awful wrong You did

me. I was his father.

Take me.

Your Honor.

I was

on the couch.

Stoop

and he.

Can hear us.

I don't know

where

is that?

And those who were

against

and love you

didn't care.

And you're

good.

You know that?

Of course not.

Joe. You in?

They that love beyond the world

cannot be separated.

Death cannot k*ll.

What? Never die lower.

Can spirits ever be divided
that love and live in the same divine

principle, the root
and record of their friendship that is.

But crossing the world as friends
do the seas,

they live in one another.

Still at Duke,
it was a good thing you did last night.

He believed you.

He died leaving him.

I once told you a man keeps his illusion.

He could live.
