You knew how important this one was, Maury.

Dave, listen to me, will ya'?

I didn't have a chance.

[panting]

I bleed for you, man.

[male narrator] "The FBI."

A QM production.

Starring Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.

Also starring Philip Abbott.

With guest stars

Mark Richman.

Tonight's episode

"The Problem Of The Honorable Wife."

[instrumental music]

Thank you.

- Oh, Lewis. - Oh, good morning, Arthur.

- Say, have you got a minute? - Sure.

What's on your schedule today?

Roger's case.

Oh, that's the admiralty matter?

You better give it to Mackenzie.

We got a very interesting package

from the San Francisco Police.

b*mb fragments, hair, paint off a car fender.

They had an expl*si*n on the wharf.

Labor trouble?

The b*mb was detonated in the bay

near a government warehouse.

That warehouse is loaded to the beams

with materiel for Vietnam.

Oh, boy.

Good morning, Lou. Mr. Ward.

No, we're going up.

[instrumental music]

Divers were able to salvage

half a dozen fragments, inspector.

Enough to tell us that the b*mb was encased in plastic.

- Professional make? - No, sir.

This particular type of plastic

isn't used in the packaging of commercial expl*sives.

And what about the expl*sive itself?

It was gelatin dynamite.

Not the ordinary kind.

Not the type a farmer might use, for instance

to blow up a tree stump.

So we're looking for a amateur expert

in the field of special expl*sives.

You mentioned, uh, paint off a car?

Yes, it was found about a block from the wharf

on a concrete wall.

Might not have been noticed at all

except but there was some fresh blood on the wall too.

Blood and a few hairs.

Hit and run?

[Arthur] 'No, apparently not.'

From the location of the paint and the blood

their best guess was that there had been a fight

and the car scraped along the wall

as it was driven away.

'Course they can't be sure

there was any connection with the bombing

but it might be a lead.

You checked the transfer

against the national automotive paint firm?

The paint came from a 1961 Ford. Starlight Blue.

Okay, thanks.

[instrumental music]

Maddock.

You know, you're a hard guy to track down sometimes.

Paul wants to see you.

Is that a fact?

Well, maybe I don't wanna see him.

[groans]

Get in there.

Take it easy, what's the matter with you?

You alright, Maury?

Someday, I'm gonna wire a grenade

to your flunky's back teeth.

And I mean it.

If he keeps this up, I'll help you pull the pin.

You said, you wanted to talk to him.

Get that hammer-headed clown away from here.

- Look you, don't you talk-- - Get him outta here.

I'll see you back in the store.

[engine starts]

We can't tip in the root end at present.

His hair's been forcibly removed from the head

and it's been crushed along the shaft. Here.

This unknown subject is around forty. Caucasian.

'Since the hair is crushed and blood-stained'

'it's likely he'll be wearing a bandage on his head.'

'Serology reports that the blood type is O.'

Brown hair, around 40, Caucasian.

- Thanks very much. - Certainly.

I'm sorry about Sunday night.

I told him if he ever worked anybody over again like that

he was out, as far as the party was concerned.

I did my best.

I don't expect any medals

but I don't go for this pushing around either.

I'm through, Paul.

[chuckles]

You don't mean that.

Oh, don't I?

This work is too important to you.

I've heard you talk too many times about Korea.

When you went over to the People's Army

you did it out of conviction, because the w*r was wrong.

But that was an intelligent surrender.

If you leave us now, when we need your skills

when you can help so much..

...that would be a defection.

How does your wife feel about America

always interfering in oriental affairs like that?

Oh, come on, will you quit?

[sighs]

Akiko doesn't even know there's a w*r on.

All she worries about is me.

If I'm happy, she's happy.

You're a lucky man. The woman loves you.

[exhales]

The woman smothers me.

Well, your marriage is your own business

but Vietnam is my business.

You know, you're the one I can't figure out.

- Me? - Yeah, you.

Big car, rich family..

...all the connections in the world.

You turned your back on it for this.

I'm the least complicated man you ever met.

That's what confuses you.

The party gave me a home.

When there's no God, a man has to believe in something.

[instrumental music]

Anyway, Paul, thanks for the buggy ride.

It's been a pleasure knowin' you.

Maury. Listen to me.

I got the word.

They'll be loading those ships any day now.

We have to hit the warehouse again.

Uh-uh, not a chance.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't.

They'll have that whole wharf plastered with guards.

You'll think of a way to get past them.

You'll do it for the party.

Uhh.

I'll see you.

Maury.

And $5000?

You come see me at the book store

when you've figured it out, okay?

[instrumental music]

[engine starts]

[music continues]

- Hey, Maury. - Doris.

What's a hardworking dock worker like you

do at home so early, huh?

Hey, I came home to get some rest.

Been to the doctor's.

Oh, you poor baby.

Do you wanna tell me what happened?

I, uh, tripped over an elephant.

Okay, so you're a big boy. Keep your secrets.

Am I gonna see you later?

I'll, uh, I'll let you know.

Oh, um, listen, I had to leave my key with your wife again.

Okay.

Look, if she drives you crazy

uh, just send her back to my flat, huh?

Yeah, yeah.

They're quite a team, those two.

I think the kid's more hip than, uh, Madam Butterfly.

Doris, uh..

...I'll talk to you later. Okay?

[instrumental music]

There.

[speaking in foreign language]

Crane.

Oh, I don't see how you do that.

Yasashii. Easy.

Yasashii for you, muzukashii for me.

Talk just like little Japanese girl.

I wish I were a Japanese girl.

I wish you were my mother, Akiko san.

Ah, very sweet

but, Tina chan, you have mother.

'Nice mother'

'work hard for you'

loves you.

No.

I'll tell you who she does love though.

Well, you know, you've seen 'em together.

No.

[footsteps approaching]

Not see.

Oh, husband. Home early.

Yeah.

I don't come all unglued

I just figured I'd take the afternoon off.

Hello, Tina.

Oh, no beer. Go to store.

Akiko, I don't want any beer.

I'm sorry.

Just don't press me, huh?

All I wanna do is lie down.

Not feel good?

I'm alright. Just got a headache.

Ah.

Listen, how do you feel?

You're the one we ought be thinkin' about.

Oh, kick.

Yeah? Heh.

Isn't that something?

Be strong, son. You see?

My, what a maiden.

Remember..

...October

in the rain

at Nikko?

Remember...Akune?

- Hmm. - Fuji-san?

[speaking in foreign language]

No.

You were the beautiful one.

I gotta lay down.

Tina. Got some candy for you.

No, thanks. It's bad for me.

Akiko.

Ah, no worry at all.

Come, we shop. Buy beer.

Do you like that candy?

No, bitter.

But in Japan

when man offer gift, woman take.

Make man happy.

Akiko san, you're an American now.

You don't have to make men happy.

Things are different here.

Maury not happy since we come to San Francisco.

Change..

...never smile..

...make bad friends.

And now this fight.

Well, if someone keeps beating up on him

he oughta go to the police.

Never go, hate police.

Go to police myself

ask them to find men who hurt Maury.

In Japan, see movie.

Long tall actor, play G-man.

Fight gangster, help citizen.

Very brave.

Yeah?

They have G-man in San Francisco?

I don't know, I guess so.

Maybe, we look.

Tell them.

Hai.

Then everything be okay for Maury.

Yeah? Come.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

Yes, ma'am. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Oh, Inspector Erskine

and Special Agent Rhodes are on their way.

Would you send them in as soon as they arrive, please?

- They're here, sir. - Already?

Yes, and this young lady has been waiting.

- Yes, missus, uh.. - Maddock.

Well, Mrs. Maddock

I'm Special Agent Bennett, in charge.

- Did you wanna talk to me? - Umm..

Oh, uh, would you mind speaking to another agent? I have to--

Want to report beating to G-man.

Yes, I see.

Husband name Maurice Maddock.

Work on wharf

and Sunday night, come home, say fall down.

Hurt head, but, I think fight.

Well, you see, Mrs. Maddock

the FBI only has jurisdiction in federal cases.

- So, anytime-- - Husband American.

That not federal?

Well, well not exactly.

Uh, uh, I'll tell you what you'd do, Mrs. Maddock.

The receptionist will give you the address

of the police precinct nearest to your home.

Why don't you stop in there and tell them about the beating?

- Alright? - Hai.

Good.

And, uh, good luck.

Mrs. Maddock, may I have your address, please?

Welcome to San Francisco. We didn't expect you so early.

- Allen, you know Jim Rhodes? - Yeah.

Oh, sure, good to see you again, Jim.

- How was the trip? - It was great, Allen.

I think I slept most of the way.

Fine. It's gonna be the only good rest

you'll get from now on, huh?

[sighs]

Don't tell me your waterfront 98 is still open now.

We figured you had that all tucked away by now

so we could spend our time out on North Beach

doing the frug. Jim that is.

[chuckles]

Well, you know, inspector

this is Manyana country.

But we'll get around to it.

Rough one, huh?

Frustrating.

Very, very frustrating.

All the papers got a hold of it

and now half the beatniks in San Francisco

have come in to confess.

But no brown-haired, 40 year old, Caucasians?

Not yet.

Yeah, what about dynamite sales, Allen?

No, there's nothing unusual on the San Francisco outlets.

We're checking Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Southern California.

But if our man's working for the Reds

stuff may have been smuggled in.

Well, lets start with the wharfs first.

I'll get you a car.

We've had some pretty heavy rain since Sunday

but at least you'll get an idea of the physical layout.

Wait a minute.

[instrumental music]

What's the matter?

Sunday..

What was that woman's name? Missus, uh, Maddock?

Mm-hm.

Husband was hurt on the wharf Sunday?

Could we be this lucky?

Yes, sir.

[Allen] 'Is Mrs. Maddock still out there?'

No, sir, but I have her address and phone number.

Alright, thank you.

Let's take a look at your files.

[Allen] 'Right.'

[instrumental music]

"with a tire iron during a Pro-Castro demonstration.

You have a man on the docks, Allen?

Yes, sir.

I want an hour-by-hour report on Maddock

his friends, people he sees, stores he buys from, everything.

Right. Uh, what was the wife's name again?

Mrs. Akiko Maddock. Yes?

FBI, Mrs. Maddock.

I'm Inspector Erskine, this is Special Agent Rhodes.

- How do you do? - May we come in?

Hai. Please..

[speaking foreign language]

[instrumental music]

House very dirty, excuse.

Ah, sit down, please.

Oh..

Oh, here, Mrs. Maddock. Let me do that for you.

Oh, no, not heavy.

Uh, may I help?

Iie.

- Now, more comfortable. - Oh..

Husband's friend have long legs too.

Keep chair for them.

Please sit down.

[speaking in foreign language]

- Ahem. - Thank you.

Uh, h-how do you say, "you're welcome" in Japanese?

Do-itashimashite.

- Do-itashi.. - Mashite.

Ma-mashite?

Mrs. Maddock, let me tell you why we're here.

I know. About husband.

Think tomorrow go to police.

But now, no need.

You help Maury?

I hope so.

You say your husband was beaten?

Hai.

[Lewis] 'Do you know the name of his doctor?'

Doctor..

Yes. Fredric Roberts.

Thank you.

You mentioned, your husband's friends?

Yes, two.

Come every Thursday, play card

I fix drink, then go to movie.

Men want to talk alone.

Could you give us their names?

Cannot rem..

Oh, one man name very hard.

Paul...Laurence.

I cannot say.

Maury sometime may be ashamed

but very patient with me.

Not like others.

Not like what others, Mrs. Maddock?

Oh, please. Not important.

Oh, we'd be interested in anything at all

you could tell us about your husband.

[speaking in foreign language]

We meet in Japan.

My town, Mishima. Family very poor.

Maury give money, food

save life.

Maury just like God to me.

We love.

Marry.

Then we come to America.

We meet family.

But family not approve.

Of you?

I understand.

Tell him very small.

Maybe not meet Japanese girl before.

But Maury got angry and hurt.

So we come to San Francisco.

Mrs. Maddock, does your husband ever speak of politics?

Ahh, no.

Does he ever take any trips out of state?

Uh, Nevada?

Arizona?

Sometime go to Arizona.

Go to place called Wickenburg.

You help?

If anything happen to Maury..

...I die.

[knock on door]

[Doris] 'You in there, honey?'

Excuse me.

Hi. I just got a modeling call and I want..

Oh.

I didn't know you had any company.

Maybe you'd like to buy some insurance too.

Why don't you try me a little later?

I live right down the hall, Apartment 14.

Anyhow, I, uh, I wonder if you'd to take care of Tina

for a couple of hours.

Uh, she's got a little cold

that's why her eyes are so puffy. Okay?

[Akiko] Okay.

Now you be a good girl, baby, hmm?

Aww..

[crying]

She hit me again.

Where hit?

Oh.

Yeah?

Yes?

- No. - Aww..

Thanks, Mrs. Maddock. We'll be in touch with you.

Yeah.

Goodbye.

[continues crying]

You know that sometimes I wish that I'd gone into some

nice, quiet business like, uh, fighting bulls.

You think Maddock's the one we're looking for?

I think there's a good chance of it.

Well, if he is, and we pick him up

it's gonna k*ll her.

If he is, and we don't pick him up..

...how many will be k*lled in Vietnam?

I'll fly to Wickenburg this afternoon.

[instrumental music]

[engine starts]

[instrumental music]

- "Special Agent Rhodes." - Yes, sir.

Well, uh, what did I do?

Yeah, well, nothing ill*gal as far as we know, Mr. Johanson.

Oh, covered my tracks pretty good, huh?

[chuckles] Yes, sir.

Uh, Mr. Johanson, I understand that you're the only one

in this area that sells a gelatin dynamite.

Yeah, that's right, it's, uh, too powerful

and too expensive for most of the jobs around here.

I get a call for it every once in a while

from some of the big mines.

Uh, do you remember the name of the last purchaser?

Yeah, fella named, uh, Jeffreys.

Yeah, he came in about a month ago.

Bought enough of the stuff to level the city.

Heh, I remember tellin' him at the time

"What you gonna do? b*mb Washington?"

Heh. He sorta laughed.

Yeah, I bet he did.

Alright, tell me, would you, uh

would you recognize him if you saw him again?

Yeah, I think so.

Yeah.

'That's him.'

'That's Jeffreys.'

[instrumental music]

Yes, he's a patient of mine.

His name is Maddock.

You treated him for bruises, contusions?

Yes.

He was in a fight.

Couple of teeth loosened, slight concussion.

He apparently hit his head on the pavement when he fell.

Thank you, doctor.

Entirely welcome.

Oh, by the way, what's Maddock's blood type?

- Type O. - Thank you.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Anything smaller?

That's it, I'm sorry. That's all I got.

Hey, Fred, take over.

See what I got in the back.

Hello, Maury.

Hello, Paul.

I was never so glad to get a phone call in my life.

You figured out a way to do the job?

Maybe.

[lighter clicks]

Alright, let's hear it.

Just as soon as you get rid

of the phantom of the opera there.

Maddock, I've just about had it with you.

Go sharpen some pencils, Dave.

Now.

[exhales]

Can you whip me up a little excitement

Thursday night near the pier?

Well, there's a big union meeting Thursday.

Couple of thousand men.

But we don't have any connections there at all.

I don't know what we could do.

One well placed b*mb in the crowd.

You'd have a riot.

Yeah, well, I'd also have a diversion

that'd get me inside the warehouse.

You'd be on the wharf. Who'd handle the meeting?

My friend, the phantom. Dave Brice.

You come up with some rough ideas.

Look, Paul, yes or no?

[instrumental music]

Yes.

Okay.

Paul, uh, about the money.

I want the 5000 in cash.

'Today.'

'At my bank.'

'You can put it in traveler's checks.'

Made out to me.

You can hold half until the job is done.

Okay?

Thursday night, uh, my place? Usual time?

[exhales]

He entered the bookstore at 12:53 and left at 1:09.

[reel whirring]

Now this is the store's owner of record.

'He was in the back room with Maddock.'

'David Clark Brice.'

'Thirty three, unmarried.'

'Former all-Pacific Coast Tackle at St. Raphael state.'

'Nothing in our files, but his car's Starlight Blue.'

'Right make, right model.'

Go ahead.

Third man in the back room

'Paul Frederick Laurence.'

'Thirty, unmarried'

'comes from a Nob Hill social background.'

'His father's a prominent financier'

'and his mother's family controls Harvest Oil.'

Paul's a perennial student.

He's attended five Pacific Coast colleges

and never graduated.

He's president of the Unit Collegiate Committee

to improve Chinese relations.

Listed as Communist dominated.

Alright.

The three men split up

'but at 2:45, Laurence and Maddock met again'

'at San Francisco Security Bank.'

'The woman with, uh, Maddock is Mrs. Doris McFalda.'

The little girl's mother.

- Anything on her? - No arrests, sir.

She separated from her husband.

'Part time model, part time c*ck waitress'

'part time you name it.'

'The two men were in the bank until it closed.'

'Investigation determined that Maddock'

'purchased $5000 worth of traveler's checks'

'with money provided by Laurence.'

We'll have the rest of the film later tonight.

Maddock and the woman proceeded to the Clinger Travel Agency

on Gary Street where Maddock purchased

two one-way airplane tickets to Mexico City.

One in the name of Mrs. Doris McFalda

for the Thursday morning flight

and one in his own name for Friday morning.

Which would seem to suggest that Mr. Maddock

has a prior commitment for Thursday evening.

Alright.

We have enough for a search warrant.

If they follow the pattern

they'll meet at Maddock's apartment tomorrow evening.

And they generally send Mrs. Maddock to a movie.

As soon as she's out of the building

we'll pay them a call and see if we can

'locate the rest of the dynamite.'

Meanwhile, I want a 24-hour surveillance

on all three of them.

And you better fill in the military authorities out

'in case you wanna double the guard on the warehouse.'

Yes, sir.

Two tickets.

It means they're leaving the little girl behind.

Yeah, probably with Mrs. Maddock.

How much can that woman take?

What's gonna happen, Lou, when she finds out

she's put the noose around her husband's neck?

Maddock put the noose around his neck

with his own two hands.

She's in love with a man who doesn't know she's there.

'Now, if she can face that fact and live with it'

she'll be alright.

If she can't, all the compassion in the world

isn't gonna make any difference, is it?

'It'll be up to her.'

[instrumental music]

[knock on door]

Yeah?

Table ready.

[music continues]

Look nice?

Yeah, it's, uh, looks fine, it's fine.

Akiko, uh, don't you think you better go? You're gonna be late.

Hai.

Uh, Maury san, maybe I take Tina chan to movie too?

Mother not home all day.

Not home now.

Yeah, sure, you can take her.

Um, need money.

Oh.

Oh, too much.

- It's alright, take it. - Oh, no, no, no.

Take it, take it!

Domo arigato.

Akiko.

I'm sorry.

Understand. Husband tired.

Headache.

But everything be alright soon.

I help.

What?

You'll see.

Tina chan.

Sayonara.

Sayonara..

...Aki chan.

Sayonara.

Then suddenly there..

There she is.

Hi, Akiko.

[instrumental music]

One down, one to go.

Just see if we can get the ball game on that thing.

[music continues]

Seventeen to twenty-two.

- Twenty two. - 'Where's Bryce?'

Still heading away from the apartment.

He's driving very cautiously.

He's, uh, turning left on Rossiter.

What's he up to?

[Jim] 'Beats me.'

Any government installations around there?

Not a thing.

Alright, Jim, don't loose him.

[music continues]

Check the back.

Seventeen to thirty one.

[male #1] 'Thirty one.'

- Is the back alley covered? - 'Yes, sir.'

Keep your eyes out, we're going in.

[male #1] 'Yes sir.'

[instrumental music]

Wait. Uh, Tina..

Are you okay?

Oh, not okay.

Is it the baby?

Come.

We go.

Maury help. Uhh.

[music continues]

He ought to be close to that parking lot by now.

[knock on door]

- Yeah? - FBI, Maddock.

We have a search warrant. Open up.

[clattering]

[dramatic music]

Maddock.

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

Maury chan!

Maury chan! Maury chan!

Maury chan!

Oh, Maury chan!

'Maury chan!'

'Maury..'

'Maur..'

Inspector.

Bryce has got a b*mb.

He's heading for the water front.

That big union meeting..

There'll be thousands of..

Call an ambulance.

What are you waiting for?

Why?

A little diversion.

[instrumental music]

Seventeen to twenty-two.

'Come in, twenty two.'

- Stick with him. - Right.

Twenty-two, go ahead.

Stop Bryce.

Jim, he's carrying a b*mb.

[dramatic music]

He's got a b*mb in that package.

- Where is he? - Next aisle over.

Go around, flank him.

[music continues]

Bryce! FBI, put your hands up!

Hold it.

[g*nshots]

[David panting]

[b*mb ticking]

[instrumental music]

[ticking continues]

Try it.

[ticking stops]

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

I wouldn't stay too long. She's very tired.

Hello, Mrs. Maddock.

I just saw your son.

He's a fine-looking boy.

Mr. Erskine..

...you help me.

Must give baby away..

[indistinct]

Don't you want him?

Want.

But cannot keep.

Need husband.

Domo arigato.

[Lewis] Mrs. Maddock.

Somebody certainly needed somebody in your marriage.

But did it ever occur to you

that it might have been your husband

who's been leaning on you?

'You came to a strange country with him.'

'you tried to help him'

'you were loyal to him'

'you, you stood by him.'

Who was the strong one?

I talked to your husband's union this morning.

They'll help you until you get on your feet again

and find a job.

Alright, I'll see what I can do about the boy.

[Akiko] 'Mr. Erskine.'

Not easy for you to come here

talk to me.

I know.

But...you try best.

Maybe I keep son.

[music continues]

Where Tina chan?

She's, uh, she's with the juvenile authorities.

Her mother's not coming back.

If I find job..

...I keep Tina chan too.

I think that could be arranged, Mrs. Maddock.

- Jim. - Allen.

- How is she? - She'll be alright.

Oh, inspector.

I got your plane tickets. You leave at 9:00 tomorrow.

Uh, but before you go, I wonder if you'd do me a favor.

There's a report in my office I'd like you to look over.

[music continues]
