[intense music]

[engine cranking]

Take him at the stop sign.

[tires screeching]

[dramatic music]

Hey, what do you think..

Do as you're told, and you won't get hurt.

Drive.

[instrumental music]

Go.

[music continues]

Give me that phone.

Mr. Winslow.

Listen, and listen good.

We got your boy.

If you wanna see him again

start raisin' $300,000.

Call the police or the FBI

and he's dead.

First sign of trouble

and we k*ll him.

Remember that.

[music continues]

[music continues]

[intense music]

[g*nsh*t]

Dupree!

[g*nsh*t]

Why'd you do it?

I don't like witnesses.

[music continues]

[creaking]

[male narrator] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin, Warner Brothers production.

Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Tonight's episode, "The Tormentors."

[instrumental music]

- Hey, you going someplace? - Yes, sir. Lunch.

Well, you can have it on the plane.

Because you're both catching the one o'clock flight

to New Orleans.

- The Winslow case. - Yeah.

Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol found a station wagon

abandoned on their side of the Louisiana border.

So, it's in our jurisdiction now.

Chauffeur stopped a couple of b*ll*ts

but he's still alive.

Now, maybe we'll be lucky this time.

If the chauffeur survives the operation

he might be able to give us a lead on the missing boy.

'Now, you better hurry.'

'You can read the teletype later.'

- Let's go. - 'Lewis.'

So far there's been no leaks

no publicity

no reason for the kidnappers to panic.

So long as the local authorities and the hospital

continue to cooperate

that boy's got a chance.

We'll do everything we can, Arthur.

Mr. Ward.

[instrumental music]

All set.

- Anything on the radio yet? - Unh-unh.

I guess Winslow's doing like he was told.

[chuckles] He'd better.

Here's to Switzerland and the good life.

[John] You and your big ideas.

How do you know this good old army pal of yours in, uh..

Zurich, Zurich.

Yeah.

...won't just take the money, if Winslow sends it

and just light out with it.

I know 'cause we grew up together.

He knows I'd follow him, might find him, and..

[chuckles]

Besides you let me worry about that, huh?

Hey, kid, rich boy

want some of this?

Come on, have a drink.

We'll drink to your daddy.

Now, you know if it'd been mine, you know what he'd done?

He'd run screaming 'til he hit the first church

crying, "Lord save that poor boy!"

Just like that.

And just like that he'd have gotten me k*lled too.

I'd reckon next to his Bible and his booze

I come first.

You sure must be a disappointment to him, Logan.

- You shut up. - I only said that--

I know what you said, and I said, shut up.

Well, what do you say, kid? You gonna join me?

Cut it out, Logan.

He had it before.

Ain't you, huh?

I bet at them fancy proms you lifted quite a few

when nobody's lookin', didn't you?

Alright, rich boy, come on.

- Take a shot. - Dupree.

Leave him alone, huh?

Sure.

Why waste good booze on him?

We'd do just like what Mr. Brock says.

'Only just whatever he said.'

[instrumental music]

[engine whirring]

[female announcer] 'Flight 577, non-stop for Washington'

'may now be boarded at Gate 5.'

Thank you.

- Inspector. - Frank, how are you?

Jim Rhodes, SAC Benton.

- Frank, how do you do? - Rhodes.

I'll get the bags.

Rotten day.

Any leads?

Not anything concrete.

Picked up some dry dirt clouts

where they abandoned the station wagon.

From the tracks the other car made

they apparently, uh, struck a log

knocked some dirt from the underside of the chassis.

Dirt's on its way to the lab now.

Still no witnesses or description of the car?

No, sir, these boys just didn't make any mistakes.

They made one.

What's the word on the chauffeur?

He's in the recovery room.

We have a man there with him.

The minute Forbes regains consciousness

if he regains it, we'll be called.

Well, you said it, Frank, it's a rotten day.

[instrumental music]

Thank you, Williams.

- Any word? - No, sir. Not yet.

Mr. Winslow, he, uh.. We-well, I mean, he is..

Don't worry now, Williams. You hear?

Don't mind about me.

It's him.

That boy is all he's got in the whole world.

Right this way, gentlemen.

Stall, delay.

We have to be careful, we have to be cautious

a lot of polite words.

A whole lot of nothin'!

We're doing everything we can, Mr. Winslow.

Five hours, gentlemen.

Five hours since I called you in.

You know what those five hours have been like?

A nightmare, a nightmare.

Where the only thing that kept me in one piece

was t-the belief, t-the moronic conviction

that you people would be making every second count.

Why, heaven forgive me, but by now

I thought that you would had--

We what, sir?

- Have your boy back? - Back? Back?

How the devil are you gonna get him back

standin' in my livin' room

lecturin' me on procedure, the book?

Explainin' to me in your all mighty wisdom

how and why you can't do what I ask.

I told you, Mr. Winslow

as long as there's a chance your son may be alive

we're not gonna make a move that might jeopardize it.

He's my son.

I'll accept the responsibility.

- We want him back as-- - Oh, I know what you want.

Nice quiet investigation

followed by a nice quiet funeral.

Well, all I want is to find my boy fast.

Alright, then cooperate with us.

You know, I should have done it my own way from the start.

All this time wasted.

Maybe somebody's seen him.

If we put his picture in the papers

and offered a reward.

Mr. Winslow, we're not amateurs

in this business, we're trying to get your son back, alive.

Alright, for the time being I'll cooperate.

But I swear to you on my wife's grave

I won't sit back for ever

if you don't start gettin' results, and soon..

[telephone ringing]

We have permission to monitor your calls?

Yes.

[telephone ringing]

If it is them, what do I say?

Act as normal as you can, be cooperative

just don't antagonize.

Hello.

It's for you.

Benton.

Right.

Be right there.

The chauffeur's regained consciousness.

Oh, will he be..

They don't know yet, it's still touch and go.

Jim, if a call comes through before I get back..

Yes, I know what to do.

Why don't they call?

Why?

[instrumental music]

Alright, come on, shake it up. Let's get going.

Go ahead and jump, rich kid.

Long way down.

Hey, will you quit dreamin', and get a move on it?

You know, honey, I never thought it was gonna work.

But we're on our way.

I'm on my way, I can smell it, feel it.

The only thing you'll ever feel is the juice

when they turn on the electric chair.

Somethin' on your mind, Brock?

Hey, champ, I asked you a question.

It's that chauffer, still bothering you, ain't it?

Look, champ, how many times I got to tell you

man was a witness, he saw the whole thing.

A witness. You know what that means?

You swore to me there'd be no killin'.

You stood in this room while we holed up

waitin' for the right day, and you swore.

You lied to me, Logan.

That's right, I lied.

Now, let me tell you somethin', champ

just one time, and you get it straight.

If I decide I gotta k*ll a man

or five men, or even this kid

'you're gonna have to learn to keep your mouth shut'

and your opinions to yourself, you got it?

You're gonna have to learn to do exactly what you're told.

Now, uh, you just..

you just relax.

And don't rock the boat.

We, uh, we got this whole thing made.

So, remember that. We're on top of the world.

[instrumental music]

Inspector Erskine, this is Special Agent Hamilton.

Inspector.

- Has he said anything? - Nothing, sir.

We haven't been allowed to question him yet.

Alright.

But I don't want him pushed.

One minute, no more.

Mr. Forbes..

My name's Erskine, FBI.

How do you feel?

Hurt.

I never knew a b*llet could hurt so much.

I, I know what you.. I know what you want.

They didn't...tell me

where they were taking the boy.

They..

Can you tell us how many they were?

What they looked like?

Two men and a...girl.

Husky, husky fellow, like a fighter.

Maybe, uh..

The one who... pulled the trigger.

Tall, thin...pale

'like, h-he was sick.'

How about the car?

Beat-up sedan.

Blue.

Blonde girl.

He..

Someone called...Dupree

just before..

That's all, inspector.

Thank you, Mr. Forbes.

Fin-find Dan, huh?

A...beat-up sedan.

Check it out.

Well, it's a start.

[instrumental music]

[telephone ringing]

Wait.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

[Logan over phone] 'Winslow?'

Yes.

You know, you're not very smart, Mr. Winslow.

You were not to call FBI.

I called no one, no one.

You hear me?

Yeah, I heard you.

Now, I'm gonna check.

If you're telling the truth

I'll be in touch with you again

but if you're not..

if you're not Mr. Winslow..

And my son? What abou..

Hello? Hello? Hello?

[instrumental music]

It's gonna be alright, Mr. Winslow.

Now, you believe that.

You believe it, Williams?

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Teletype from Washington.

We got a tentative make on one of our kidnappers.

Logan Clyde Dupree.

Born and raised, east Texas.

Father, an itinerant lay preacher.

Off and on at TB sanatoriums from the time he was six

until he apparently decided

he liked the penitentiary better.

'1946, armed robbery, two years.'

as*ault with a deadly weapon, four years.

Attempted m*rder.

'1957 through '64'

'14 arrests'

'two suspicion of homicide'

one conviction, drunken disorderly.

All in all, a real nice boy.

They usually are.

Alright, let's move at it.

Stakeout Dupree's last known address

put all his relatives and friends

under immediate and very discrete surveillance.

Oh, one question, inspector.

What makes you think Dupree's got any friends?

Well, if the make's right, we know he has at least two.

If it turns out to be wrong, we still haven't lost anything.

Have we?

Hm.

[instrumental music]

[bell ringing]

Hey, what's the matter?

Train coming.

[horn blaring]

[music continues]

[horn blaring]

[music continues]

[horn blaring]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Logan..

Are you crazy?

What happens if we're gotta prove he's alive to collect?

Logan!

[crickets chirping]

[g*n clicks]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Something to eat, sir? It'll do you good.

Y-you got to have some.

I said no.

[Williams] 'You, sir?'

Thank you.

Get out.

Get out!

Mr. Winslow..

I guess on the day when the world ends

you nice college boys

in your white shirts are just gonna be

standin' around.

We're doing the best we can, sir.

Now, if it's the man we suspect--

Sooner or later he'll show up

at one of your stakeouts I suppose.

Oh, when? Next week? Next month? Next year?

'When it's too late?'

Mr. Winslow, please try to--

Calm down, take it easy.

You know what's out there?

'Twenty thousand acres.'

Mine, Marshal Winslow's.

And I didn't get that by takin' it easy.

From a shack in the delta I turned a swamp

into ten million dollars.

Now none of it means a thing.

Not a thing.

You can't love money.

All you can love is..

Now, you get out of here.

'I want nothin' more to do with the FBI.'

'I'm through sittin' back'

and I'm through waitin'.

[instrumental music]

Nothing, nothing, nothing.

What about the lab records?

[intercom buzzes]

Benton.

'Right away.'

It was Rhodes. Winslow's called the press in.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

No, not all of you, not the same time.

Right. Well, it was about 4:30 in the afternoon.

'Yes, as far as I know it was.'

Lou, there was no way to stop him.

Besides the press, what else?

He's offered a $50,000 reward

for any information leading to the boy's rescue

and he's brought in private detectives.

[crowd chattering]

Alright. You have your story.

All I ask is you make sure it's page one.

All I ask is that it's printed in the biggest headlines

this state ever saw.

Mr. Winslow.

We have nothin' more to say to each other, inspector.

I did the right thing, the only thing.

What you've done, Mr. Winslow

is to raise the odds against your son

to a thousand to one.

Is there anythin' else?

Yes, there is.

If the kidnappers contact you again

make them put the boy in the phone

before paying the ransom

because if you don't, there are no odds.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

No, I'm sorry, but we have no comment.

No, n-no, no, we cannot discuss a pending investigation.

Goodbye, sir.

[intercom buzzing]

Oh, boy.

Yes?

No, n-no, I'm sorry

we have no statement at this time.

Yea.. T-that's right.

Goodbye.

Ms. Edwards, would you please hold the calls.

- 'Yes, sir.' - Thank you.

Oh, what I'd give to tell them what I really think

of the eminent Marshall Winslow.

You mind if I give you a small piece of advice?

Worry less about the father and more about the boy.

Yeah, some father.

Lou, tell me something, are you really this calm?

I'm sorry.

It's just that I can't understand

how a man could be so stupid

as to risk his son's life like that.

Is it alright with you if we go back to work now?

[sighs] Okay.

Jim, Winslow is scared.

He's so scared he can't...eat

he can't sleep, he can't even think.

You want to help the human race

start by eliminating fear.

Kills more people than everything else put together.

[instrumental music]

[tires screeching]

[tires screeching]

[music continues]

Lewis, if I could make you a miracle, I would.

Arthur, that clump of dirt we picked up

at the scene of the sh**ting is all we've got now.

The lab is still working on it.

Well, what's holding it up?

Lewis, look..

it's too bad you haven't been able to track down Dupree

it's too bad, uh, you weren't clairvoyant enough

to send along a psychiatrist and a private nurse for Winslow

but what has happened is not your fault

it's not yours, and it's not Jim's.

Alright, Arthur.

There's one more thing though.

Since Winslow has broken the news

the wraps are off on this.

From now on you are free to do anything and everything

to save that boy's life.

I'll keep you posted.

[sighs]

[upbeat music]

[music continues]

Turn that thing off.

[music continues]

What's the matter with you, huh?

Read it! Big daddy blew the whistle on us.

We could have called by now

made the ransom arrangements

and been halfway to Switzerland

but no, you had to sweat the old man

make him crawl first.

Now, we gotta get out of the country

without the money.

What is the matter with you, huh?

As long as we got this kid

can't nobody touch us.

Will you leave that thing alone?

Why don't you k*ll the kid?

That'll fix the old man.

[Logan] 'Yeah, go ahead, JC. I'm waitin'.'

For what?

For you to tell me what a great big break we got

when that chauffeur didn't croak and how if I k*ll this kid now

'I'm puttin' us right back in the death house.'

I don't have to say it. You already said it.

We're okay as long as we got the boy.

What's the matter, lover?

You chicken?

Go on and call the old man, Logan.

You can't do anything until you call him.

I'm still waiting, lover.

[John] 'Go on and call him, Logan.'

Unless you think she's worth dying for.

I'll take care of the kid when I come back.

And, sweetheart, you gotta learn to keep your mouth shut.

Otherwise I'll make you pull the trigger.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

[ringing]

Hello. Hello.

You nervous, Winslow?

You got a right to be.

Now, look..

Now, you shut up and listen.

Pay close attention 'cause I'm only gonna go through it

once.

Now, if you wanna see that boy again, you call off the FBI

'then you have your bank transfer the 300,000'

'to the Strassa Trust in Zurich, Switzerland.'

'You got that?'

The account is in the name of Eggstrom.

E-G-G-S-T-R-O-M.

And, Winslow, if that money isn't there by the night

you got great big trouble.

The answer is no.

Do you hear me?

I'll consent to nothin' until I talk to my boy.

I have no intention of rewardin' his murderers.

Do you hear me?

Now, Winslow, you hold on.

You better change your mind.

You done bein' loud enough mistakes already.

You have my answer.

You're gonna hear from me again, do you understand?

If you're lucky.

[instrumental music]

Maybe I pushed him too far.

Maybe..

Williams, did I do right?

Here it is, sir.

You sure about this?

I'd almost bet my life on it, Mr. Ward.

Well, it's not your life that's at stake, Dave.

Get me Inspector Erskine, please.

New Orleans Field Office.

[instrumental music]

[intercom buzzing]

Yes?

Yeah, just a minute. Lou.

Erskine. Yes, Arthur.

[Arthur over phone] 'Lewis, I just got the lab report.'

Part of it is pertinent.

Some of the soil comes from an area

that's typical of the south-central Ozarks.

A 200 square mile stretch

extending from Baker

through Henderson to Reed, Arkansas.

Thanks, Art, I'll talk to you later.

- 'Lewis?' - Yes.

Did you get any sleep?

No, did you?

We'll need photographs of every square foot of ground

from Baker to Reed.

What are we after?

Dupree's car.

I'll get in touch with Air Force headquarters.

Jim, tell 'em we need

a high altitude reconnaissance jet.

Anything else will be too risky.

And tell 'em we need it now.

Right.

Inspector, I have to talk to you.

- That's alright. - Excuse me.

I could have phoned

but I need absolute assurance

that you'll do what I ask.

Absolute assurance, inspector.

About what, Mr. Winslow?

I want you to intercede with the press

get them to stop all publicity

and I want you to halt your investigation.

You understand?

I understand.

You've heard from the kidnappers

and you're making your own deal with 'em.

Will you do as I ask?

It's too late to stop what's been set in motion.

Suppose you tell me what they want

with that and the leads we already have

we might still have a chance.

I'm tellin' you to stand clear.

If you my hamper my efforts to save Dan

his blood will be on your hand.

Mr. Winslow..

You did talk to your son before settlin' with him?

I-I'll be talkin' to him

but you...you stay out of it.

[dramatic music]

[John] 'Alright, so what's the difference?'

'If that's what the old man wants'

put the kid on the phone.

Oh, that's smart, that's smart.

Drive him right into town while the whole country's

looking for him.

Mister..

You better do what my dad wants

or he won't give you a penny.

Get up, rich boy.

'Come here.'

I said, come here.

You know I always liked rich boys.

[John] 'Logan!'

[dramatic music]

[groans]

[chuckles]

[music continues]

Now I know why you never made in the ring, champ.

You got a weak belly.

I'm through, Logan, finished.

You take my advice, you get the money

you buy yourself a good head doctor.

[Logan] 'Brock.'

You won't do anything, Logan.

You owe me too much.

Ever since I picked you up in that bar

so sick you couldn't stand.

You won't do anything.

'Hey, Brock.'

You forgot to say goodbye.

[g*nsh*t]

[music continues]

[g*nsh*t]

[screams]

What now?

Money. What else?

I waited a long time for that.

I'm gonna get it tonight. Nothing's gonna stop me.

Here, here you go.

Where are you goin'?

[music continues]

Have to dig two graves.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Is that clear?

Yes.

Alright, I'm gonna put that boy on the phone at midnight.

You got exactly 15 seconds with him

so don't try to trace the call, you understand?

- I understand. - Good.

'Cause if that money is not in Zurich, Switzerland

by tomorrow, Winslow..

- You'll release him then, you-- - You got my word.

Midnight, Winslow.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[Lewis] 'If that's where they're holed up'

'it's gonna impossible to approach'

without being spotted a mile off.

If, if, if-if-if.

Look, Lou, I know it's against the book

but why don't we get to that shack anyway?

- Inspector, we can't just-- - Where did they call from?

There are no telephone poles leadin' to that shack.

Payphone.

Frank, I want the location of every single one in the area.

If they haven't put the boy on the phone yet

we've got a chance.

Call the SAC in Little Rock, have him standby

with all available men.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[doorbell rings]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

Have you no decency, sir?

I told you to stay out of it.

We think we know where the kidnapers are, Mr. Winslow.

But without your cooperation it won't help.

Now, I have to know

have you spoken to your son yet?

Mr. Winslow.

Well, even if I tell you

how will that help?

Just answer me, please.

Hell, I'm to talk to him at midnight.

But just what good is knowin' that is gon..

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

It's for you.

Erskine.

Inspector.

- We bought some luck. - Yes?

There are only two payphones in the whole area.

Both in Reed.

One's inside a boarding house

the other's outside a filling station

at the end of town.

Call the SAC in Little Rock

and tell them to stake them both out.

Rhodes and I'll be there well before midnight.

'Yes, sir.'

Now, when they call

here's what to tell your son.

[instrumental music]

Alright, you remember, kid..

don't try to make a break or nothin'

or I'll give you the same thing I gave Brock.

Get in.

[engine cranking]

[music continues]

Lou..

Just how good do you think our chances are?

I'll let you know at one minute past midnight.

We'll pull it off, Jim.

You know what I wish?

I wish you sounded just a little bit more confident

about the whole thing.

[instrumental music]

I was wrong.

I should have done things your way in the first place.

[engine revving at distance]

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[ringing]

- Hello. - 'Winslow?'

Yes.

You got 15 seconds.

Hi, dad.

Now, Dan, listen close

no matter what I say

don't look at him, just answer yes or no

or I'm alright.

Yes.

You gotta run, make a break for it

the second you get out of that booth.

There are men there who'll help you.

I'm alright, dad.

I gotta go now.

Satisfied, Winslow?

I'm satisfied.

[intense music]

Come on, come on.

He can't make the break, he's afraid.

It's over if they reach the car.

Now, what?

Hit your motoring lights when I tell you.

Yeah.

[music continues]

Go.

[engine splutters]

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

[g*nshots]

[instrumental music]

Dad!

[indistinct chatter]

[music continues]

[sighs] Tired?

Well, the way I see it the bureau owes us

about three nights' sleep.

I'll mention it to Arthur.

I'm sure he'll be most sympathetic.

[theme music]

[music continues]
