- Hello, Charlie. - Ralph.

Been a long time.

- I-I didn't recognize you. - Oh, come on, Charlie.

- No, I-- - Please.

I-I don't know what you're talking..

I-I was just calling up my girl.

I-I don't know anything about--

Charlie..

If you're a rat inside the walls

you're a rat out in the street.

Nothing's changed.

[screams]

[dramatic music]

[intense music]

[music continues]

Easy, buddy, easy. I'll get you help.

No.

You help me.

Phone.

- You need a doctor. - Later.

You dial.

F..

[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin, Warner Brothers production.

Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring Philip Abbott..

Stephen Brooks.

With guest stars..

Ralph Meeker..

Nita Talbot..

John Milford..

Rudy Solari.

Tonight's episode, "The Raid."

[intense music]

Just a minute.

[Marvin Miller] Parolee Charles Everett Allen was dying.

An old friend of the FBI

well-known to them

as a pickpocket and a thief.

Allen was standing on the right side of the law

for the first and last time in his life.

He was informing on the man who had fatally wounded him.

Where are you?

Right.

Gotcha.

[Marvin Miller] Allen had spotted

an ex-convict named Ralph Daiker.

Also known as the "Iceman."

Second in command of a g*ng

led by top ten fugitives, Scott Martin.

In the three months since his release

from Florida State Prison

Martin had led his g*ng in a series of bank robberies

ranging across the country

and marked by two savage murders.

John, contact Sheriff's Homicide

and get an ambulance down to the Victory drive-in.

Charlie Allen just took an icepick in the chest.

[John] 'Right away, sir.'

Ralph Daiker did it.

Allen spotted him going into the Samerson Lodge.

Get the name of the manager and ask Washington

for an immediate check.

I wanna be sure of his background

before we talk to him.

Allen's tip would result in what is at once

the most complex and dangerous

of all the FBI actions.

The raid.

And Inspector Lewis Erskine

in Los Angeles for only a few hours between planes

would lead that raid as the senior agent on the scene.

Its success or failure would be his responsibility.

Did you ever meet this Martin?

Twice. He was in Atlanta in '62.

Unusual background to make the ten most wanted.

Born and raised in the middle-west.

Honor student into his teens.

Father, a well-to-do pharmacist.

First thing he ever stole was his father's shotgun.

He tried to k*ll him with it.

[Erskine] 'Martin's in this neighborhood.'

'So it's a good bet he's picked a target nearby'

and his boys are looking it over.

Now, here's the outline of our operation

as nearly as I can give it to you right now.

I wanna seal off the Samerson Lodge from the outside.

Teams 27, 28 and 29 will cover the back and sides.

Teams 30, 31 and 32

will cover the key approach streets.

The local people will give us a hand with traffic control.

But it's our responsibility to make sure

that no strange vehicles

come within g*nsh*t range once we move in.

I understand that this is a small real estate office

with adequate command at the front of the lodge.

[phone rings]

We'll move out the office personnel

and run the operation from there.

Are there any questions?

Yes?

Yeah, just a moment.

Lou.

Alright. I'm gonna give you a history of the g*ng.

You can assume that if you give Scott Martin

a chance to k*ll you, he won't let it go to waste.

He's had a lot of practice. That's all.

Erskine.

Hello, Lewis? This is Arthur.

Oh, yes, Art, I've been trying to reach you.

Well, I was up in the hill, testifying.

- How was the flight? - Fine.

When will you be back?

Well, we may be in for a delay, Art.

Looks as if Martin's g*ng is holed up in a motel

about 15 minutes away.

Oh. Isolated area?

[chuckles] I wish we were that lucky.

No, it's all freeway traffic, multiple dwellings.

Wives, children, babies in strollers.

Well, looks like you bought yourself a package.

Well, I'll let you get started then. Good luck.

Thanks, Art.

Well, let's not keep them waiting.

Yeah.

[instrumental music]

Bank stays open late on Fridays?

Yeah, till 6:00. Why? Did you want to make a deposit?

[chuckles]

I might.

You know, you ought to let me paint this thing for you.

Wouldn't it be simpler to buy a new one?

[chuckles]

That's an idea.

I've enjoyed the afternoon, Scott. I really have.

There'll be lots of afternoons like this, Linda.

I hope so.

I guess you want to get back and pick up Jobie, huh?

Yeah. It's getting late.

It's a wonderful thing

the feeling between a mother and her child.

Oh, this is beautiful.

Was Jobie born here in California?

Yeah, right here.

Beautiful.

No wonder they call it the Golden State.

And all those banks..

Never seen so many banks.

[instrumental music]

Well.. Deputy McDonald. Inspector Erskine.

Inspector. Special Agent Rhodes.

- How are you doing? - Rhodes.

How do you wanna work it, inspector?

Well, first I think we ought to find out

which members of the g*ng are in the building right now.

We ran a quick check on the motel manager Earnest Velasco.

No federal criminal record.

I did the same when we were contacted.

Nothing in our files or the State Bureau of Identification.

Well, let's go over and have a talk with him.

If possible, I'd like to evacuate the other tenants.

Right.

[instrumental music]

I think we ought to make a move.

Relax, sh**ter.

Nobody saw me.

Barely got the receiver off the hook.

Uh, I..

How could you figure a thing like that?

All the way across the country, and there he is.

Biggest rat in the Florida Penn.

That he was.

It bothers me though.

Almost like it was meant to be.

It's in the cards.

"Go to Jail. Go directly to Jail.

Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200."

Hey, that's pretty rank, huh, buddy?

You'll never win the game that way.

Yeah, I'm beginning to think you're right.

You and the kid getting along real good, George.

Oh, yeah, we're buddies already, right, Jobie?

Yes, sir.

I sure wish I could try this camera Mr. Martin gave me.

Hey, well, listen, there's a great view up in the roof

if you wanna take a picture.

Can we go up there sometime?

Well, sure, we'll go right now.

Maybe you better not.

Wait till his mother comes back.

She wouldn't worry.

Why wouldn't she worry?

It's a pretty big fall from up there.

She trusts me.

Uh-huh.

You ask her when she comes back.

You, you don't argue much do you, Joe?

No, sir. Never does much good.

Yeah.

Well, let's see if we can get me out of the jail house.

[dramatic music]

Now, the only problem I can see is Mrs. Gerardi.

She's in her 80s, gets around in a wheelchair.

Where does she live?

- Here. - Directly below Martin.

Yes, that's right.

Is he in his apartment now?

Oh, I saw him go up before noon with his girl.

Have you ever seen her before?

Yes. Once with Martin a couple of days ago.

Suppose an agent were to bring this Mrs. Gerardi

downstairs in a wheelchair

would that necessarily alarm

Daiker and the others?

No, her son-in-law comes over every now and then

around this time of day, and does that sort of thing.

I don't think they'd notice.

Then let's try it.

- I'm out. - Pair of Queens.

I folded with Jacks and fours.

You're off today, sh**ter.

[indistinct]

I got a bad feeling.

Is she leaving the kid up for adoption here?

She'll be along.

Scott keeps 'em busy.

I don't like the idea of him taking the girl along

while he looks the bank over.

You want him to stand in a corner making sketches?

I think that girl is getting to him a little.

You need some action, you get some girls in

you send them on their way. It's safer.

I'll open.

Two cards.

You don't have to worry about Scott.

He gets tired of 'em, moves 'em out.

It's funny..

Hates his old man so much

but when it comes to women they're the same.

He hates his old man because of what he it did to his mother.

What's the matter?

I've got Rothstein's hand.

Who?

Arnold Rothstein, the gambler.

He was holding the same hand the night he was shot.

sh**ter, that was 200 years ago.

Fourth November...1928.

[dramatic music]

One more tenant, Jim's bringing her down now.

Martin in there?

No, Miss Velasco saw him leave with a girl.

They were driving a light blue Ford hard top

a little battered.

He's also identified Daiker and Armer.

He has described an older man I can't place offhand.

Inspector, uh, would you be needing me any longer?

No, thanks. Just stay out of the way.

Yes, sir.

Alert the men on the perimeter streets.

If they spot the car have them notify us but not move in.

It's almost 4:25.

If we wait much longer

we're gonna catch people coming home from work.

That's right.

If we move in now, we'll alert Martin.

He's the one at the top of the list.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Car 31 to Unit A.

[Lewis] 'Go ahead, 31.'

Subject and woman companion are now moving up

from the intersection of Veranda and Elm.

'We have them in sight.'

Sure you don't want me to go with you?

No, I just have to pick up something at the drug store.

I'll be back in a minute.

[instrumental music]

Unit A to 55. Pick up the girl.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

FBI. We'd like to talk to you, miss.

Me? What about?

Could you come with us, please?

Whatever you say.

[instrumental music]

Say, that's alright. I'll call you up there.

Let's go, buddy.

[instrumental music]

Over you go! There you are, tiger.

The bank looks good. We go tomorrow afternoon.

Easy access to four exits

very crowded between 2:00 and 3:00.

'And around to a freeway'

Hey, what's the matter with you, sh**ter?

He's been holding Rothstein's hand.

[sighs] Your Iceman made a delivery.

Hey, what're you talkin' about?

I saw Charlie Allen across the street a while ago.

I was comin' into the motel.

Did he see you?

All eyes and mouth, poor Charlie.

You remember Charlie.

'Nailed him in a booth'

'barely got the phone off the hook.'

He never talked again to another human being, Scott.

I promise you.

I still think we ought to go.

[sighs]

You know, it's funny, the street seemed kind of quiet.

Scott, I got a feeling.

Come on, sh**ter, go on downstairs

get some fresh air, and when people start

comin' home from work, come back.

[sighing] sh**ter's gettin' old.

He's the best nitro man I ever saw.

Yeah, but he's gettin' nervous.

I don't like nervous people around.

I owe a lot to the sh**ter.

[intense music]

Scott Martin, Ralph Daiker, George Armer..

'This is the FBI!'

'We have warrants for your arrest!'

'Come out with your hands raised!'

Shh.

[music continues]

Scott Martin, Ralph Daiker, George Armer..

This is the FBI. We have warrants for your arrest!

Come out with your hands raised!

[music continues]

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

sh**ter's hit and they got him trapped in the courtyard.

[phone ringing]

Hello?

[g*nshots]

[music continues]

Alright, show 'em the kid.

Jim.

[instrumental music]

Thank you.

What do we have on the girl so far?

Linda Wray, age 27, born August 8, 1939

at Stockton, California.

She claims no arrest record of any kind.

We're checking that out.

She says the boy's her son.

I'm Inspector Erskine, Miss Wray.

We had no idea your son was in the apartment.

How long has he been there?

Well, uh, I brought him in around, uh, 10:00 this morning

and Scott said we could leave him with his friends

while we went out to lunch and I showed him around town.

Hm.

How long have you known Scott Martin?

For about a week, more or less, uh..

But he told me his name was Scott Howard.

Where'd you meet him?

Well, I work in a c*ck lounge.

The Frenzy on Ventura Boulevard

and Scotty's been comin' in there for about a week.

Alone?

Sometimes, sometimes with his friends.

He's very generous, he always buys the bar.

Not many men spend money like that.

Did he tell you what he does for a living?

He mentioned some kind of business.

[chuckling] Alright, inspector..

I didn't think he was a captain of industry.

Why do you want him?

Bank robbery, m*rder.

[dramatic music]

We won't do anything to jeopardize your son.

How old is the boy?

He's ten.

Would you like to notify his father?

No, no, he, he wouldn't be that interested.

I'm gonna have to ask you to wait right here

for the time being.

Oh, am I under arrest, inspector?

Not for the moment.

It's my fault he's up there.

[intense music]

We just had a report from the rear of the building

one of their men's in the courtyard and he's been wounded.

So we got one in the rough, one in the courtyard

two in the apartment.

We can't rush them because of the boy

we can't use tear gas for the same reason.

So we wait.

[breathing heavily]

[music continues]

I don't understand it. He's got the boy?

He must know that's a passport right out of there.

He's waiting for dark.

Suppose he takes the boy..

Can he be trusted to free him later?

He's taken hostages twice before

and once he felt he was safe, he k*lled them both.

If we had a man on top of that drive-in

and if we could somehow get the boy out of the way

we have a clear shot.

What if we missed? Or if the shot ricocheted?

Well, what if Martin decides to go right now?

Comes out with the boy in front of him, hm?

Take a man and try the drive-in.

Alright.

[dramatic music]

Pete.

Lewis?

We've, uh, got a little more on the girl.

No arrest record

there is a record of a divorce in 1960

from a musician named Philip Wray.

We checked on him, picked up in 1961 and 1963

on narcotics charges, plus two misdemeanor convictions.

Served time in a Los Angeles county jail.

Well, from what she says, I doubt

that she's been in contact with him. Anything else?

Yeah, a 1964 petition filed

by the department of welfare

to have her declared an unfit mother.

Petition dismissed with a judicial injunction

not to take the child out of the state of California.

[music continues]

Hm.

Will you give me the number for the, uh..

Ralph, what is it?

Samerson realty company.

Samerson realty company.

Thank you.

Go in now?

Well, not yet.

We'll phone him as soon as it gets dark, not before.

What are you gonna tell him?

We'll take the kid with us through the lands

as soon as we get out of the city

we call the FBI and tell them where the kid is.

What about the sh**ter?

We'll do the best we can about him.

You're really gonna give the kid back to his mother?

Sure, why not?

I don't know.

After seein' her, I kinda get the feeling

she never wanted him that much in the first place.

[intense music]

[music continues]

We've got a possible ident on that fourth man, inspector.

We think his name is Harry Willis

nickname, sh**ter.

The description given by Valesco pretty much checks out.

Is he from California?

Well, he's done time out here

so we've got a pretty thick file on him.

But he started in Oklahoma, working in the oil fields

bringing in wells with nitro.

to break open a bank safe.

He goes back quite a way.

Well, the last we have on him

is a Florida state prison address.

Either Martin or Daiker could have met him there.

[intense music]

FBI!

I'm coming out!

'Don't sh**t, I'm coming out!'

[music continues]

[g*nshots]

What was the point of that?

Nobody quits on me, Iceman, nobody.

[instrumental music]

[grunting]

[breathing heavily]

Can you, can you get..

- Yeah? - Can you get me a priest?

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Lou.

The girl.

Well, how do you like that, we start with an ace high

and we end up with a pair.

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

She couldn't be in with him.

We've verified her in Plymouth for the past year

and we know she just met Martin a week ago.

Oh, that doesn't make a great deal of difference now, does it?

She's in there. That's all that matters.

[man on radio] 'Team 3 to control.'

Go ahead, Jim.

If Armer's up and firing

I think I can get a good shot at him

without hurting the boy.

Alright. At 5:00, I'll order them out again.

That got 'em going before.

I have 4:52, exactly.

[Jim] '4:52. Check.'

[phone ringing]

Yeah?

How you two doin' up there?

Hey, I got me a real champ up here.

Uh, we can stay out all night.

Uh, but I hope we don't have to.

No, we'll go after dark.

Oh, um, we got some more company.

You can tell Jobie his mother decided to join the party.

You're kiddin'.

[Scott] 'Alright. We'll let you know.'

Okay.

Hey, buddy, have I got good news for you?

Your mom's downstairs.

How did she get in?

I don't know but she made it.

Now, he's got her too.

It was bad enough before.

Oh, hey. Come on, buddy, relax.

Nobody's gonna get hurt.

He k*lled that man.

Why would he do that?

Yeah, well.. See that's because the sh**ter was giving up.

A-and Scott, he doesn't like people who give up.

Well, hey, listen, it's a game, Jobie.

There's only one rule, and Scott made it.

You never give up.

We'll have to travel light for a while, sweetheart

'but I'll make it up to you.'

Scotty, you listen to me a minute, please.

Call the FBI now.

- Let Jobie go. - No, it doesn't make sense.

[Linda] 'Well, you got me, that's all you need, one hostage.'

'They won't try to stop you.'

'Just let him go.'

Scott, you're not crazy enough to let that kid go.

I'm not crazy at all.

He must be scared half to death.

[Ralph] 'You all of a sudden got awfully concerned over that kid?'

Dumped him here this afternoon.

I got a feeling he's been dumped at a lot of places.

Shut up, Ralph.

No. He's right.

I never wanted him, it's true.

How can you say that? What kind of a mother are you?

I don't know. I always felt trapped and tied down

and his father left me before he was born, that didn't help much.

Where was his father?

In jail, when I divorced him.

When I told him about the divorce

he said, it was the best thing, he was relieved.

He never mentioned Jobie. Not once.

That's no excuse.

I'm not trying to excuse anything.

I'm just trying to make you see why he ought to have a chance.

Somebody ought to give him a chance.

I never gave him much, Scott.

Now I've just about taken his whole life away from him.

Please..

You're not thinking of giving up that kid?

You're gonna stop me, Ralph?

Look, Scott, you k*lled the sh**ter

and I held still for it..

...but this girl and her kid

are what's keeping you and me alive and we need 'em both.

Uh-huh.

Don't flip. Just don't flip.

It's.. Like you said you know..

"You like what you see, and spend a few bucks

"buy the bar a few times.

Pretty soon you got her jumping for joy, but...that's it."

- She's like all the rest. - No.

If she was like all the rest

she wouldn't have come back for the kid.

[dramatic music]

Martin, this is your last chance.

Come out with your hands raised

if you don't wanna end up like Willis.

[music continues]

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nf*re]

[music continues]

[g*nf*re continues]

[dramatic music]

[theme music]

[g*nf*re]

Jim..

- Jim? What happened? - 'Armer's out of it.'

'The boy is unharmed and out of the line of fire.'

[phone ringing]

[music continues]

[ringing continues]

No answer.

What does that mean?

My boy George is out of action.

And Jobie.

Oh, no, no, the FBI wouldn't sh**t a kid.

That's really all you want, isn't it?

To get your boy out?

No. That's not all.

[g*nf*re]

[g*nf*re]

Scott, if you gave yourself up--

[chuckles] I'll get about as far as a death house in San Quentin.

First man I ever tried to k*ll was my father.

I'm only sorry I didn't make it.

Day after my mother was buried he opened a pharmacy.

Said it's the thing to do.

Other people to think of.

The only one he was thinkin' of was our neighbor's wife.

I almost k*lled 'em both.

Scott..

It's too bad we didn't meet a long time ago.

Long time ago.

[phone ringing]

- Erskine. - Erskine, Scott Martin.

I wanna make a deal.

What is it?

You bring a car around to the front with a tank full of gas.

We'll leave the kid here.

We come out with the kid's mother and take off.

And then, in say, uh, and hour, we'll drop her off

and she'll phone you.

I'm afraid I'll have to walk away from that one.

Uh, why? Do you wanna see her?

Listen, Martin, she's in there with you

because she wanted to be.

And in case you're interested, Armer's dead now.

Suppose they come out with a girl in front of them?

We have to let him go.

What else can we do

[instrumental music]

Time to go, Scott.

They won't make a deal, Ralph.

They're bluffing.

What if they're not?

Then sh**ter and George are gonna have company.

You, me..

...the little mother here and the kid.

Call him back, Scott.

Tell him we're comin' out.

[music continues]

[phone ringing]

[g*nf*re]

Martin.

[dramatic music]

Jobie? It's alright.

- You're the FBI? - Mm-hmm.

We'll go downstairs in a couple of minutes.

Mister, did you get my mother out?

Not yet, Jobie, but we will.

[music continues]

Are you the man who shot him?

I had to.

Come on.

Here we go.

Mr. Martin never would've let him quit.

[g*nf*re]

Jobie..

He's safe.

[theme music]

Darling. I'm sorry.

I'm sorry if I made things worse for you, inspector.

As it turned out, you didn't.

[music continues]

So long, Jobie.

So long.

Well, if ever you're in Los Angeles again, inspector

drop by.

Sorry about the damage.

Well, it could've been worse.

Yes, it could've been worse.

Well, I think we can make that plane.

Yup.

[Marvin Miller] Ralph Daiker survived his wounds

and was tried and convicted of m*rder.

A death sentence has been stayed pending appeal.

The FBI received information leading them to the Martin g*ng

at 3:40 p.m., October 14th, 1966.

The menace of that g*ng was eliminated forever at 5:17

ninety-seven minutes later.

[theme music]
