What are you doing?

- 'Jake, what's in here?' - 'The Durro.'

[female #1] 'The landscape?'

You know, I remember seeing reproductions

of this when I was..

[gasps]

[Jake] 'He's hurt, call the guard.'

- 'Well, how--' - 'Call the guard!'

[female #1] 'Guard, somebody help.'

Help!

Oh, help. Please, hurry.

Mr. Andrews?

'Mr. Andrews?'

[music continues]

[intense music]

Excuse me.

Excuse me, please.

[dramatic music]

[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin, Warner Brothers production.

Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring, Philip Abbott..

Steven Brooks.

With guest stars, J.D. Cannon..

Antoinette Bower...

Murray Matheson.

Tonight's episode, "Flight Plan."

[instrumental music]

[Marvin Miller] The Durro Landscape.

A painting valued at half a million dollars

had been stolen from a Washington museum.

Since it was almost a certainty that it would be transported

across a state line

the FBI entered the case immediately.

The investigation was given top priority.

Not only because of the value of the painting

but because art collector, Webb Andrews

had been seriously hurt.

Andrews had served with distinction

in the cabinets of two presidents.

If he did not survive, his death would deprive the country

of a loved and respected public servant.

Was there a scuffle? Did you hear voices?

Oh, no, no, somebody said something

but I was watching this young couple.

You were looking toward the Durro room, right?

Yes.

You saw Mr. Andrews go in?

I saw him go in

then I saw the young couple go in.

And then the girl came out screaming.

[sighs] When was the last time you saw

the picture in its frame, Mr. Teryl?

About 9:30 this morning.

You called the police at 10:03.

I noticed a closet in there.

Do you suppose anyone could have been hiding in it?

Not at 9:30. No, sir.

The door was open. I closed it then.

- It was empty. - I see.

And how many people would have been in this corridor

between 9:30 and 10:00?

A rough guess.

Roughly, half a dozen.

Can you describe any of them?

Well, there were two nuns, and there was a young girl

about fifteen, uh--

- Excuse me, Lou, I fo-- - Where did you find this?

- Why, do you recognize it? - Why, yes.

I remember this fella.

He was the last man walking down this corridor

before Mr. Andrews went into the room.

It was in the closet.

- Can you describe him? - Well, yes.

He's about my height, my weight.

About forty years old.

I don't remember his face

but I can tell you what he was wearing.

Yes?

Had on a gray suit, a white buttoned-down shirt

'a gray and blue strip tie.'

Was he wearing hat?

No, no hat. No coat.

[intense music]

[woman over PA] 'KBL Flight 29, now unloading at Gate 4.'

[instrumental music]

The item on the left is plastic.

The article next to it is part of a feather.

Is there any indication that the case

was ever used to carry camera equipment?

Nothing we could find.

- Feather, huh? - Yes, sir.

Small, green, ornamental.

It had been treated, waterproofed.

How are we doing?

Well, the subject evidently used the case for carrying

something besides cameras, Art.

- Any prints? - No, sir.

No identifying marks of any kind.

Labels, manufacture stamps had all been cut out.

It's brand new, but there's no way

of telling where it was bought.

However, from the style, and the type of leather

and lining used, indicate that it's Italian made.

Plastic. Is it, uh, thin, easily folded?

Yes, sir, very thin.

- Sounds like a raincoat, Art. - Hmm.

That case is certainly large enough to hold one.

Yeah, put it in the closet.

Maybe with the other visitors, the guard would have

been looking for someone carrying a case.

Well, our friend is not gonna have an easy time

getting rid of a Durro as famous as this.

Unless he stole it for himself.

Or an assignment.

Which pretty much narrows down the field

of prospective buyers.

What was it worth? Half a million?

Get a list of private collectors.

We, uh, talked with most of the people

that were in the museum this morning.

Tried to find out if they could remember anybody else.

Three of them recalled a male Caucasian

but he seems to be missing.

He's the right height and weight?

Mm-hmm.

I checked with the cab company

and one driver remembers a passenger

he picked up about two blocks away from the museum.

Now, this was at 10:05.

The guy was in a hurry to get to Dallas Airport.

He wanted to catch a plane leaving at 10:50.

That checked out as a KBL Flight to LA.

They just made it.

Does the driver remember how he was dressed?

Now, that's the only thing that doesn't fit

the guard's description.

Driver said he was wearing a, a plastic raincoat

and a pork pie hat with a feather.

[dramatic music]

[engine revving]

[tires screeching]

Are you alright?

So sorry. It was my fault.

It was my fault, I-I took the curve too fast.

Listen, hadn't you better sit down or something.

No, I'm alright.

Well, please let me write down my name and address.

I-I have insurance, of course.

Just forget it, lady. No harm done.

But there is, look at your jacket.

You might be hurt, I mean, you don't know.

Give me your name, I'll make sure that my insurance company--

Not necessary.

Just forget it.

- Lew. - Brian.

- Jim, good to see you. - Brian, how are you?

Lew, I got in touch with the chief stewardess

on Sunday's Flight 17.

She's, uh, due to board her

Washington flight in a few minutes

but she said she'd be glad to talk to you until she's called.

Does she remember the subject?

Certainly does. Right over here.

- Miss Bowen? - Yes.

This is Inspector Erskine and Special Agent Rhodes.

- How do you do? - Miss Bowen, how are you?

Good of you to wait.

Miss Bowen, I understand you recall a man

on your Sunday flight who wore a plastic raincoat.

Yes, very clearly. He was alone, about 40, I'd say.

Miss Bowen, why do you remember this one man so well?

Well, mostly because of the raincoat.

You see, I'd asked if I could hang it up two or three times

and he said no, he'd just rather keep it on.

'Said he was cold.'

Did anyone else have a raincoat on?

No.

Was there anything distinctive about him?

Scar, tattoo, accent?

No, he was very quiet. Very pale.

[woman over PA] 'KBL Stewardess Bowen, please report..'

- Well, nice to have met you. - Thanks again.

If you think of anything else you might jot it down.

I'll have an agent meet your plane in Washington

and perhaps you wouldn't mind describing

this man to one of our artists?

Of course.

Inspector, I don't know how much this is worth

and it's something I really can't be too sure about..

Yes?

But I may have seen the same man again, here in the terminal.

[chuckles] I wouldn't swear to it, of course

because he was dressed entirely different.

Was carrying a suitcase, but..

How was he dressed?

Jeans and a windbreaker, tan color.

Yeah, he was carrying one of those white helmets

that policemen wear.

- Crash helmet? - Yes.

I almost spoke to him, but then I thought, gosh, you know.

[woman over PA] 'KBL Stewardess Bowen, report..'

- Goodbye, I'm sorry. - Where was he headed?

To the parking lot.

[instrumental music]

Sunday afternoon? Yeah, I was on duty.

This man we're looking for may have been on a motorcycle.

Well, I remember this one guy.

What did he look like?

About my size, a little older.

Jeans, a kind of a brown jacket, and a crash helmet.

- What kind of a bike was it? - You mean the make?

[chuckles] I wouldn't know one from another.

I've a record of the license though, if that would help.

'It was sitting around here for a couple of days.'

Yeah, that'd help.

[instrumental music]

[woman on phone] 'Dodd's desk, good afternoon.'

Hi, Mr. Dodd returned yet? This is Robert Dewey again.

'Oh, yes, Mr. Dewey. I'll see if he's in.'

[intercom buzzing]

Yes?

[woman on phone] 'Are you in for Robert Dewey, Mr. Dodd?'

Yes, put him on.

Hello, Robert.

Well, I was beginning to wonder

if I'd get through to you today, Mr. Dodd.

I'm surprised you want to get through to me.

Or are y-you checking to see

whether the company can get along without you or not?

You're supposed to be on a vacation.

I thought you're going hunting.

I did, I'm back.

'Any luck?'

No venison, but I did come across something that

I thought might interest a collector like you.

What's that?

A landscape.

You mean?

I mean the one that's been in the news.

There's blood on that one, Robert.

I appreciate your thinking of me, but..

[Robert on phone] 'Now, didn't you tell me just a year ago'

'that you tried to buy this Durro?'

Yes.

'Well, it's for sale now.'

'For the first time in a hundred years'

'whether there's blood on it or not.'

That's the important thing, isn't it?

How did you come across it?

'I got a phone call from the same man'

'that contacted me about the diamond Buddha.'

He's very reliable.

If he says he has the original Durro

I believe him.

[Robert over phone] 'You were satisfied with the Buddha, weren't you?'

How much is he asking for the landscape?

'One hundred thousand.'

It seems there are several other collectors waiting.

He says you'll have to make up your mind right away.

No one's going to leap at an item that hot, Robert.

I'll think about it.

[Robert laughs] 'Oh, Mr. Dodd.'

How much do you get out of this transaction, incidentally?

Ten percent.

'You need the money?'

[chuckles] Well..

If I lost as much money on the horses as you do, Robert

I'd find another hobby.

Well, at least some bookies who are a little friendlier.

Always surprises me to find an accountant who gambles.

The two just don't seem to go together.

What do you want me to tell my contact, Mr. Dodd?

Tell him I'll let him know in a couple of days.

Oh, if I were you, I..

[doorbell rings]

Mr. Dodd?

[ringing continues]

Can you hang on a minute? There's somebody at the door.

You call me back in a couple of days, Robert.

Mr-Mr. Dodd?

[dramatic music]

Look, what do you think..

Uh, Mr. Dewey? Remember me?

I'm the idiotic woman driver.

So, you found it?

Wasn't it lucky? I..

Guess, it must have dropped out when you fell.

I went up the road a while

but I didn't catch up with you.

Well, I, uh..

I didn't realize it was missing, for an hour or so.

I, I did drive back to look around, but..

Well, thank you.

I'd almost convinced myself I'd lost it down the canyon.

Sorry.

Sorry? For, for what?

Well, that..

...that you had to go to all the trouble of bringing it back.

It was no trouble.

Your name and address are right in the front of it.

I tried to find a telephone number

but you're, uh, apparently unlisted.

Yes.

I suppose I could've mailed it

but I happened to be driving quite close to here

so I thought I'd drop it off.

By the way, my name is Helen Meade.

- Mrs. Meade? - Miss.

Uh, I hope that your wife wasn't too worried about the accident.

Oh, I'm not married.

'And maybe that's why I'm such a poor host.'

Wouldn't you care to come in?

At least I could offer you a cup of coffee.

No. No, thank you.

I want to get down to the insurance company

before they close, to report the accident.

Well, what about dinner then?

- Dinner? - Tonight.

Well, I--

Well, that is, if you're not busy.

- No, no. - Good.

I'll pick you up around 7:00 then.

- Alright. - Address?

Oh, address, yes.

I know it's at Hermosa Beach.

I just came out here from Connecticut.

I'm not as scatter-brained as I seem.

"98-71 Strand."

Anyone staying with you?

That we could invite along.

Oh, no. No, I'm alone.

Well, I'll see you at 7:00 then.

Alright.

Uh, will you be on your motorcycle

or should I dress comfortably, or--

No, I'll be in a car.

As a matter of fact, that wasn't my bike.

I was just trying it out, it belongs to a friend of mine

another hunter, who was up there with me.

And that's why I'd prefer you didn't report the accident.

Why.. I don't understand why?

He didn't even notice the scratches.

But if he gets an insurance question there

he'll never let me use it again.

Well, I don't want to get you in any trouble.

I won't report it, if you'd really rather that I didn't.

I really wouldn't.

Oh, it's better to leave the whole thing dead and buried.

[instrumental music]

Couple of kids found it.

I saw 'em playing around down there, took a look.

I'd just gotten the license number called

so I contacted you people right away.

- Was the, uh, the bike stolen? - No, uh, rented.

That man who gave his name is Fields.

He, uh, he couldn't possibly have gone over with it.

No sign of blood?

No, sir, there was nothing.

[instrumental music]

Lew, this is George Morey. Inspector Erskine.

- How are you, Mr. Morey? - Inspector.

Mr. Morey owns the, uh, Saddle Peak Lodge

we passed a few miles back.

Seems that we are not the only ones interested in

people renting motorcycles around here.

No, sir. A woman came by my place Sunday afternoon.

She said she'd found a wallet on the road

and wanted to know if I knew the owner.

She said he was headin' up my way on a motorcycle.

She tried to follow him, but she couldn't catch up.

Mmm, she's driving a light blue car?

Why, yes, sir. '66 two-door.

Did she show you the wallet herself, Mr. Morey?

No, sir, but she mentioned the man's name, I think.

Uh, just can't come by it now.

Wasn't Fields, was it?

No. No, nothing like that, two syllables.

She give her name?

Better than that, she bought some gas

and paid for it with her credit card.

Thought you might need it.

"Helen Meade?"

You can get her address from the company.

She was driving a car with a Connecticut license.

Uh, the number's on there.

Thanks very much, Mr. Morey. You've been a big help.

- Thank you. - Anytime.

Try to get her itinerary from the Connecticut address.

Get the widest possible circulation

into the description of the car and license number.

Then pray that she doesn't try to return the wallet herself.

Why would he bother her?

She's not gonna connect a..

a guy riding motorcycle in California

with a crime committed in Washington.

When he abandoned that motorcycle

he must have something else planted up here to ride out in.

So, he was establishing an alibi.

Now, someone knows he wasn't at the mountains all that time.

She can connect him with the motorcycle.

'Maybe the motorcycle can be traced back to the airport.'

If Andrews dies, he would have committed one m*rder already.

You see any good reason why he should stop there?

[dramatic music]

[doorbell ringing]

[ringing continues]

- Hello. - Hello.

I hope I'm not too early.

No, no. Come in.

I made a reservation at a seafood house, but, uh..

You know, I wanted to call you and ask you beforehand.

I mean, officially, whether you'd like to eat here?

If it would be alright? I still don't have your phone number.

If I'd like to?

I'm overwhelmed.

Do you have any idea how long it's been

since I've had a home cooked meal?

Probably as long as it's been since I've cooked one.

Oh, don't worry, I'm a very good cook.

It's just that I don't often..

Don't often, what?

[laughs]

I don't often invite people over.

You wont believe this, but I'm really a very shy person.

When I came from Connecticut, I said to myself, "Alright..

"Either grow up or get out of the game altogether.

'"If you want a new life'

"then you'll have to stop moping about it

"and do something about it.

Smile at someone, cook a dinner."

Would you like to fix the drinks?

They're over there, and this is the ice.

- Alright. - Have you got a match?

Yes, I think so.

The pilot light on this is out.

I never know whether the burner is on or not.

You know, that could be very dangerous.

I know. Well, life can be very dangerous.

- It can be. - And very exciting too.

That's why I'm going to stop hiding from it.

Random meetings, instead of..

I may fall flat on my face once or twice

but what's the difference?

You can't k*ll a girl for trying.

[instrumental music]

[theme music]

There are all local art collectors

who might be able to help.

Jake Gordon, 1-11 Palm Avenue, South Pasadena, California.

Collection is largely 18th century French.

Only modern items are the German abstractions of the late '20s.

No known interest in works of French impressions.

No works by Durro.

John Pomeroy, 97-19, Lans drive, Pacific Palisade.

Collection is primarily late 19th century

French impressionist.

Subject has collected on the continent

and is believed to have utilized undercover agents

in obtaining and bringing certain paintings

to this country.

Subject died 9-21-65.

Collection is presently being offered for sale by his widow.

[intercom buzzes]

Durant. Yes, hold on.

Lewis, Ben Wilson, Hartford.

Thanks.

Yes, Ben?

Inspector, we checked out the Meade girl pretty thoroughly.

Considering that she had spent most of her life here

there's not too much to pass on.

What do you have?

'Well, she doesn't seem to have left anything behind'

'and she didn't very much about where she was going.'

She's 35, unmarried.

She had a job in a local bank for the last ten years.

She lived with her parents until they died

and two weeks ago, she sold the house

and said she was gonna try California.

- Was she alone in the car? - 'Yes, sir.'

Her plans apparently were to settle in LA.

But the last word that her friends

at the bank had was a postcard

from the Desert Palms, in Las Vegas.

Alright, Ben, thanks.

She may have spend some time in Desert Palms, in Las Vegas.

'Have the SAC look into it.'

Alright.

And which was the last one?

Alright, John Pomeroy.

Next is Henry Russell Dodd, 1926.

Vista del Ray, Beverly Hills.

Subject is a wealthy

and well-traveled business executive.

This is reflected in a collection which combines

classic and modern works

of heavy emphasis on the impressionists.

Collection includes Durro, Prince and lithographs.

Subject was indicted in 1959

for customs violation.

But the indictment was dropped

after payment of duties and fines.

Very interesting.

Get everything customs has.

I'd like to talk to any contacts

you have or might know about fencing at that level.

Right.

[carnival music]

[screaming]

Number three, Rose being the winner!

That's us again.

You're bringin' me luck, I know it's you.

No, it's the combination.

I've never been so lucky either.

Robert, it's been a beautiful day.

I'm so glad I met you.

Even if I did try and k*ll you in the process.

You were so mad.

I wanted you to stay.

When you drove away, I thought I'll never see you again.

And then I found the wallet.

What did you think, when I brought it

back to you like that without mailing it?

I was glad.

It took a lot of courage.

All my life, people have been telling me

not to talk to strangers.

Not to smile first.

Not to take any chances.

It hasn't been so terrible so far.

I feel very safe with you.

Should we try the roller coaster?

Come on.

[dramatic music]

Yes, send him in.

- Inspector Erskine? - Yes.

Kind of you to see us on such short notice, Mr. Dodd.

- Special Agent Rhodes. - How do you do, sir?

How do you do? Sit down, sit down.

Now, then..

Mr. Dodd, I imagine you must have read of the theft

of the Doro Landscape.

Yes, I did. It's a terrible thing.

You're something of an authority on [indistinct].

- In a small way, yes. - 'You collect him?'

Few minor things, that's all.

Have you ever expressed a desire to own the Landscape?

Of course, not.

What do you mean, "Expressed a desire?"

Expressed a desire.

I may have.

Then it's possible the thief might approach you with it?

I wouldn't listen to such an offer.

Have you heard of any attempt to place the landscape..

- '...on the market?' - No.

Or any rumors, as to where it might be?

Of course, not. What kind of a circle do you think I move in?

You're a collector, collectors move in unusual circles.

Not this collector.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I--

Mr. Dodd, on August 20th, you arrived in New York

with a watercolor you bought in Florence.

That's ancient history.

In your customs declaration, you listed its value as less

than $50. But underneath it, was a Flemish masterpiece

valued I believe, at $75,000.

I bought a watercolor. Now, inspector..

Mr. Dodd, if, uh, if you should be contacted, we'd appreciate it

if you'd listen to the man, find out what you can from him.

[intercom buzzing]

I'm not taking any calls, Susan.

Oh. Yes.

It's for you, inspector.

Thank you. Erskine.

Lou, it's Durant.

Helen Meade spent two nights

at the Desert Palms last week.

When she left, she had the Palms make reservations for her

at the Garden Motel on Olympic.

Have you called them?

Yes, but the manager was out.

He's not expected back until 7:30.

All his daughter could tell us was that

there was no Helen Meade registered there now.

Go drop by there later on.

Mr. Dodd, do you know anyone named Fields?

Well, Chuck Fields is the head of my accounting department.

Why?

Is this a man in his 40s, and rides a motorcycle?

Chuck used to own a motorcycle, but he's past 60 now.

Hmm..

Well, I, I guess that does it for now.

We'll be in touch with you from time to time.

[dramatic music]

[phone ringing]

[door shuts]

[ringing continues]

- Hello, - 'Robert? Dodd here.'

Hello, Mr. Dodd, how are ya?

I just had a pair of very interesting visitors.

I think you ought to know about them.

The FBI dropped in.

Oh?

Why?

Is your friend's name Fields by any chance?

No. What's this all about?

Well, they connect the name with the Durro theft.

Fields, and a motorcycle.

'You didn't use Chuck's name as an alias or anything'

'did you?'

No. Of course not.

Well, seems to me, it's the sort of automatic thing I'd do.

Use a friend's name subconsciously.

Mr. Dodd--

It doesn't matter. The point is, I couldn't make a deal

with your friend now, even if I wanted to.

Tell him he'll have to market the picture somewhere else

and tell him to stay away from me.

Now look, we better lay all of our cards on the table.

I don't want to hear anymore. I don't want to know his name.

I don't want to know about your involvement.

I don't want them chasing anything to me through you.

Like the diamond Buddha?

Where is your next assignment?

Australia.

To order the books in the Sydney office.

- When? - 'Two weeks.'

I'll arrange for you to leave tomorrow. You can resign there.

Full severance pay, make whatever future you want.

Oh, those men from the FBI worried you pretty badly

didn't they, Mr. Dodd?

Goodbye, Robert. I hope you can get everything

squared away by the morning.

I'll get everything squared away.

Don't you worry about that.

- 'Hello?' - Helen, it's me.

I wonder if I could see you again for dinner tonight.

- 'Tonight? Alright.' - Good. About 7:00?

- 'Yes.' - Good.

'Was a marvelous day, wasn't it?'

Yes, it was. A wonderful day.

[dramatic music]

[theme music]

Sorry to be so late, inspector.

You get caught in that freeway traffic

you might as well give up.

- Apparently you're right. - Now, that name was Meade?

Helen Meade.

Yeah, she would've arrived on the fourth, Mr. Collins.

She phoned in her reservation from the Desert Palms

in Las Vegas.

Meade. Connecticut.

Stayed one night.

No forwarding address.

- Did she make any phone calls? - No record.

Do you remember her personally, Mr. Collins?

I think I remember her. Shy woman.

Not the kind of..

Wait, I think she did talk to me a little bit.

Said she was interested in renting a house.

Wanted to settle in California.

LA?

No, I get the impression she wanted to be at the beach.

She was crazy about the beach.

Did you happen to recommend anyone in particular?

No, sir.

- A house. - Real estate brokers.

Yeah, she may have had a phone installed.

Check with the telephone company.

Alright.

Lou..

I have the names of the accounts in Field's office.

There's only one who reports directly to Mr. Dodd.

Knows him socially, I understand.

His work is generally overseas.

Auditing the company books

in, uh, Europe and Asia.

Right age and, uh, roughly the right build.

Would he have been in Italy in the last year too?

Yes. Rome. Two months ago.

- Oh, the camera bag? - Where's he now?

Two weeks vacation.

Well, let's conduct an immediate background inquiry on him.

- Right. - What's his name?

Robert?

'Robert?'

- Everything alright? - Yes. Fine. Why?

- Really alright? - Oh, I'm just tired.

I'm not used to roller coasters.

Neither am I.

It was fun, wasn't it?

More fun than, I've ever had in my life before.

I've always tended to avoid people and entanglements.

You're the first person that I..

Helen, when you think about the future, how do you see us?

I mean, if you had money enough

and...a man who loved you..

...could you live on

airplanes and ships?

Roller coasters?

'Sydney, Johannesburg.'

No, not forever.

I'd want a home, and children. Wouldn't you?

Yes.

Yes, I want that.

Well, a person can have anything they want, can't they

if they want it enough.

Not everything.

- Are you ready? - Hmm

Waiter.

[dramatic music]

'Check of the Santa Monica area is now complete.'

'There are no new telephone subscribers'

'with the subject's name in either Santa Monica or Malibu.'

Right. Thank you. Unit A clear.

I think I have just brandy.

Brandy is fine.

I'm so tired, I think we did too much today.

There's a sadness in the air tonight.

Here, let me do that.

You go sit down.

Cold?

Did you ever have the feeling when you were a child

that you had too much fun?

Played too hard?

Stayed too long at the party?

Sunset touch.

What?

Do you like poetry?

Some.
