[theme music]
[instrumental music]
[indistinct chattering]
Forget it. See you. Goodnight.
Come on.
[music continues]
Okay, he's on his way.
What happened?
How do I know what happened?
Merely bowled another game.
It doesn't change anything.
He's an hour later than he's ever been before.
Maybe he's gonna stay overnight with somebody.
Where's the g*n?
Look, Jack, I don't wanna do this.
Give me the g*n!
I'll see you guys tomorrow. Take it easy.
Okay, he's alone.
Listen, honey..
...why don't we forget this one?
We'll go after somebody else later.
Listen!
You've been leaving everything up to me for couple of years
now and we've been doing real good, haven't we?
Now, you shut up, baby.
Let me handle the business.
Okay, here we go.
[engine turns over]
[music continues]
He never turned there before.
[music continues]
[honking]
[barks]
That's him. He must have forgotten.
- Forgot what? Who? - Tom Enfield.
His mama wanted me to fix a dress.
She said he'll be by Ford around 10.
Hey, uh, pal!
What?
This is a g*n. Get in the car.
The car!
[dramatic music]
Tom!
Tom!
Tom!
[tires screeching]
[music continues]
[theme music]

Tonight's episode, "The Satellite."
[dramatic music]
[male narrator] At approximately 11:15 p.m. on the sixth of March
seventeen year old Thomas Enfield
son of a prominent New England industrialist disappeared
from the streets of Woodford, Massachusetts.
After an intensive 24-hour investigation
local and state police were unable to turn up a single
important clue to the victims whereabouts.
And on March eighth, agents of the FBI enter the case.
He left the bowling alley about 11 o'clock.
Told his friends he was going straight home
but his mother had asked him to pick up
a gown she was having altered.
Apparently, remembered this after he got in the car.
Have you talked to the eyewitness yourself?
Not yet. She's here, you know.
Here, with a family?
She was released from the hospital this morning.
She's always been very close to the boy.
She was Mrs. Enfield's maid when the son was born.
Stayed with the family until last year.
Mr. Enfield offered to take care of her
until she was back up on her feet again.
'Oh, good morning, Mr. Enfield?'
- Yes. - I'm Anthony Harper.
Special agent in charge of the Boston FBI office.
This is Inspector Erskine. I called earlier.
Uh, come in, come in, please.
Has, uh, anything happened? You found him?
- I'm sorry, not yet. - I see.
Well, may I, uh, offer you drink, uh, coffee?
No, thank you.
When I heard the doorbell, I thought..
Well, I don't really know what I thought
except all those horror movies about..
...how they send the body back.
Mr. Enfield..
The blazes haven't they called, anyway?
Don't they realize what this means to us?
And I don't understand
why doesn't somebody do something about this?
[sighs]
I'm sorry. Forgive me, I..
Well, it figures I, I don't have anybody else to yell at
so I yell at you.
You must be a very patient man, inspector.
I can afford to be.
I don't have a son who's missing.
Would you like to know who I'm really yelling at?
My son.
How does that smack of logicality.
It's funny. I love him very much.
But he's been driving me crazy these last few months.
He's 17 years old. He's straight A's in school.
He's got the whole world in front of him.
What do you suppose he wants to do?
Join the marines.
You oppose this?
Not really, it's just that he..
He hasn't got the backbone for it, he's..
It'll break him.
Never even spent a night away from home.
I take that back.
He has spent one night away, hasn't he?
'Which brings up another point, gentlemen.'
'If I receive a ransom note, I intend to pay it.'
'And I don't want any arguments.'
'I want my son back.'
Alive and whole.
Is that agreed?
Of course the, uh, bureau always leaves that up to the family.
[knocking on door]
[clears throat] 'Yes, Earl?'
Mr. Enfield, I wonder if I could talk with you a moment.
Yes. Excuse me.
How's Elizabeth?
Well, she's awake now, but the doctor says
she's gonna have to stay in bed for quite a while.
Oh, that's fine, she can have her old room
for as long as she needs it.
Oh, that's just wonderful of you, Mr. Enfield.
I mean, you really take a load off of my mind.
Elizabeth, she's going to need a lot of medical care.
A lot of attention.
I can't afford a nurse and..
I wouldn't want to see her in the county hospital.
That's no problem, Earl
don't let yourself fret about it.
Inspector, Mrs. Page is awake. Do you want to talk to her?
- Yes, if she's able to. - I'll see.
The witness's husband, police interview indicated
he was in the house when the kidnapping occurred.
He didn't have anything to add to his wife's account.
Did he work here?
They did at one time, gardener.
Left to open his own nursery.
Business failed and he lived off the wife's income
until the social security started.
And now Enfield's come to the rescue again, huh?
The son certainly doesn't look very much like the father.
No, he doesn't.
You know, if Enfield is right about the boy..
....I wonder why he wants to become a Marine.
[instrumental music]
Do you?
What are you doing?
What are you doing is the question.
You never drank a drop before, now all of a sudden
you can't get enough.
[sigh] Just leave me alone.
[music continues]
'No, we made it, Jackie boy.'
He's hungry but he's alright.
In spite of the beating you gave him.
It's Wednesday.
You got to hollering around and throwing stuff in there
so I gave you your bottle and locked you out.
[music continues]
What did you take the gag off for?
I think you broke his nose, he couldn't breathe.
Come on, Jack, he isn't gonna make--
Grow up!
You're on a kidnapping, sweetheart.
You're not on a cookout with the girls.
[breathing heavily]
And don't take that off again, you understand?
- Where's my other bottle? - You drank it.
What happens..
You make the plan.
You work on all the details
go over it and over it and nothing works.
Nothing works.
The woman saw my face, kid!
And unless we k*ll her..
Jack, let's forget the whole business.
I mean, who needs all this grief?
Has there been anything on the radio?
Just that he's missing.
Just k*ll him now, huh.
Forget the money and..
...save all the trouble.
I didn't mean k*ll him.
[Elizabeth] 'And, um, he-he said something'
I-I-I couldn't hear.
Then he, uh..
...pushed him into the car.
Hmm. What kind of a car was it?
It was, uh..
It was big, it was black, and, uh..
'...there-there was a driver..'
...two or three others.
They looked foreign in the dark.
Whoa, girl!
I'd k*ll 'em, if I could get my hands on 'em.
Foreign, hm?
Including the man with a g*n?
How tall did you say he was?
Oh..
Taller than Tommy, honey?
Taller, older..
...heavier.
[knocking on door]
This gentleman says he wants to see you.
Yes. Thank you.
- Mr. Enfield, how's the missus? - Oh, she's sleeping now.
She'll be alright. Don't worry about her, Earl.
She must be just half out of her mind.
It's my fault, but..
Now, now, now, now.
I'm gonna go on home now.
Mow the lawn, dust and clean-up.
You tell Elizabeth, I'll be back.
Yes, sir.
[sobbing]
Now, now, Elizabeth.
The boy went bowling every Monday night.
Used to leave by himself, go straight home.
That will be a pretty easy pattern for a kidnapper to spot
but, uh, we-we interviewed everybody at the alley
and nobody remembers seeing anybody suspicious, so..
No, uh..
...dark looking, foreign hoods or
big black limousine?
Huh?
He went bowling every Monday night, huh?
Yeah, it's a high school league.
- High school? - Yeah.
- Mrs. Page. - Inspector, I think Mrs. Page--
No, no, no, no, I'm alright.
I-I'm alright. L-let me help, please.
Mrs. Page.
Sometimes, uh..
...people try to help too much.
How can you help too much?
Well..
...sometimes, uh
people are ashamed to admit that
they didn't actually see what took place.
So they...fill in
details they aren't actually sure of.
But the fact is, Mrs. Page, even a trained eye
misses a great deal when it's taken by surprise.
'Now we don't expect you to remember much about'
what happened Monday night.
Even if you don't remember anything at all.
You'll help us most by telling us the truth.
The Enfield's have been so good to Earl and me, and I..
When they need us the most, I can't..
Now, Elizabeth.
I, uh..
...I don't remember anything about the car
I don't even remember what color it was
and I guess there must've been a driver, but..
...I didn't see him.
What did you see?
Just Tom and the other fella.
Alright.
Now, I want you to pretend it's Monday night again.
You're coming down the walk, you see something.
What's the first thought that crosses your mind.
What are those two boys fighting about?
Boys?
One of those boys is Tom.
Do you know the other one?
His hair is wavy.
And his jaw is..
...strong.
Would you recognize him if you saw him again?
I-I don't..
I-I-I think I would.
Uh, Jim.
Check with the Juvenile division of the Boston Police
for logical suspects. And, uh, get me yearbooks.
All high schools within a 100 miles.
Going back at least, six graduating classes.
Yes, sir.
Where's Earl?
He went home. He'll be back.
[sighs]
He's gonna be awfully proud of me for remembering.
'He thinks the world of you and Mrs. Enfield.'
He-he'd do anything to-to help you.
Just anything.
[intense music]
[theme music]
Look..
Look, if-if I take it off for one minute
you promise you won't yell?
I mean, the only one who'd hear is old smiley out there.
You want him to come in here and swarm all over
the both of us?
[breathing heavily]
Okay.
[sighs]
Oh, thanks.
Don't talk, just breathe.
[coughing]
How do you feel?
h*!
Well, my nose is busted.
My eyes hurt.
My ears are still ringing, and my tongue is swollen.
Other than that, I am just perfect.
'All I need for Christmas is a new head, right?'
How old are you?
Seventeen.
Seem older.
How old do you think I am?
Old? B-by age?
I was 20, November. Look younger, don't I?
Jack's 24.
All of a sudden, he's acting like a baby.
I'm sorry he worked you over like that.
Can't figure him out lately.
[exhales] What do you mean?
Well, it's like he's going to pieces.
Oh, well, the, uh, the man's under a lot of pressure there.
Listen, I wanna tell you something..
[chuckles]
You took the gag off again.
Jack, he can't breathe.
He didn't yell, and nobody'd hear if he did.
[screams]
[intense music]
You put that back on and I'll leave you.
Is that right?
That's right.
Why?
Because he'd suffocate.
And if somebody wanted to see his handwriting
or hearing his voice before they pay the money
you'd be out of luck, wouldn't you?
Alright!
Alright, pally.
'But you understand that if, if you make any noise'
'I'm just gonna have to blow your head off.'
You do understand that, don't you?
Good.
[telephone rings] Thank you.
Yes?
Mister, you're a very sick man.
Why don't you go see a psychiatrist.
Why? Why?
A couple of possible, sir.
Was that the phone, Roy?
Maggie, the doctor said you were supposed to stay upstairs.
Stay upstairs and do what? Go crazy?
- Who called? - No one.
It's just a wrong number, is all.
Now, Inspector Erskine here, this is..
- Special Agent Rhodes. - 'How do you do?'
Are you people really telling me the truth?
You really haven't heard anything?
I know the waiting is hard, Mrs. Enfield--
[Roy] 'Inspector.'
[Lewis] '"Hundred thousand dollars, Thursday, Uptown Motel.'
"Gaines Vermont.
"Mrs. Enfield alone, or k*ll son.
"Boy says tell folks..
...TEEP A-OK."
What does that mean?
It's his nick name, you know.
Thomas Philippe Enfield.
TP-TEEP.
Do the newspapers call him that?
I mean, would it be common knowledge?
No, not outside the family.
Elizabeth called him that when he was born.
So, what are they trying to say anyway
that they really have the boy?
We better get this to the lab.
Thursday. That's today. Wait a minute.
Did they say "Mrs. Enfield alone?"
Oh, no. No.
Roy, just give me the money.
We can do anything we have to.
Alright. Hundred thousand dollars.
- That's gonna be hard to find-- - Uh, Jim. Wait a minute.
You know this writing?
Roy?
"Put $50,000 in barrel at intersection
"routes 42 and 76, New Hampshire..
"...by midnight, ninth
"or Tom leaves the scene permanent.
"Stay away from police.
Loose your cool and you loose your son."
Which is the right one?
Either one could be.
Or neither?
Sharks follow a ship, Mrs. Enfield.
One of these letters was probably written
by the kidnapper.
The other is what we call a "Satellite extortion."
You may get more, before the case is over.
We'll check them all out.
How? When?
Each note wants to be paid today.
And I can't raise $150,000 cash that quickly!
And even if I did pay, I'm going to have to make a choice.
Supposing I make the wrong one.
All I can tell you, of course, is that you'd be running a risk.
Now, the bureau's primary concern
is the safe return of your son.
So, if you don't mind, we'd like to cover both pay off sites.
But where are the kidnappers apt to be?
Can you tell me that, inspector?
I'm sorry.
Can you make a guess?
Well, I can send both letters to our laboratory.
I can weigh their conclusions against what I already know
or suspect, and I can make an evaluation.
But I have to make the decision.
Why don't you worry about that tonight, Mr. Enfield?
We may know more by then.
[intense music]
[sighs]
- Hey! - What?
Can I have a glass of water?
You're harder to take care of than a baby.
I'll be glad to get rid of you.
How rid are you gonna get?
He's gonna k*ll me, huh?
No, he's not gonna k*ll you, huh.
You've got a great imagination, you know that?
Okay. So, uh, what are you gonna do?
You gonna help him?
- Quit it. - No, you quit it.
He's too scared not to k*ll me.
Alright, when's he going for the money?
Look, he'll leave you here to watch me.
You can let me go. You can let me go.
I swear, I wouldn't give your description to the police.
You could go anywhere you wanted.
You could leave the country if you wanted.
It's that.
I'll help him pull the trigger.
Well?
[instrumental music]
[telephone rings]
[male #1] 'Document section.'
'Uh, Mr. Ward.'
Thanks.
Hello, Ward!
Oh, good. Put him on.
Hello, Lewis?
Yes, Art.
Let me give you the negatives first.
There were no fingerprints found on either one of the notes.
And the paper, in both cases, was regular, unbonded
dime store stock
which is practically untraceable.
The letters in the words that were cut out
in the Vermont note, uh
it could've come from any mass circulation magazine.
'So, there's no help for us there.'
Hm, what about the one from New Hampshire?
Nothing solid, but some interesting aspects.
The writer may have been trying a fairly old trick.
The slant in structure of the letters indicate
he may have been using is his offhand.
That he was right-handed ordinarily
but used his left hand to write the note.
Hmm, well, then that would account
for the shakiness of the letters.
[Mr. Ward] 'Right.'
It wouldn't have been, uh, age or illness?
That's very unlikely.
When you consider the hip language used
in the text of the note.
Then our subject might be in his early 20's now.
That certainly is a possibility that shouldn't be overlooked.
Alright, Art, thanks very much.
I managed to raise $100,000.
The sun is going down, so I think I better get started.
Have you, uh..
...come to an evaluation, inspector?
There's not enough to go on
we have to assume either one could be the kidnapper.
I want your opinion, inspector. Right or wrong.
If he were your son, if it were your choice to make
where would you leave the real money?
New Hampshire.
I see.
Well, New Hampshire it is then.
Mr. Enfield.
How you pay the money, or whether pay it at all
is up to you, of course.
But I'd like to point out that the note didn't direct you
to bring the suitcase personally.
So, if it's alright with you and your wife
I'd like one of my agents to do that.
Well, it's your board game, inspector.
We want to play it any way you want to play it.
Just as long as you bring my son back alive.
Now what about Margaret? Will she have to go to Vermont?
Of course, I will, Roy.
As a matter of fact, I, uh
ought to be leaving now.
Well, what do you think?
Mr. Enfield, I'd like you to meet Miss Charlotte Cullen.
How do you do, Mr. Enfield?
She's with the FBI, Roy.
I didn't know the bureau had female agents.
Well, we haven't, Charlotte's a file clerk
for the Boston office, she volunteered
'to stand in for you wife.'
Uh, any objections?
No. No, absolutely not.
They're not trying for an exact resemblance, Roy.
A wig, my clothes, a little make-up.
That's right, with darkness and the distance involved
we don't feel it'll be necessary.
And you'll be in New Hampshire?
- 'That's right.' - Where's Mr. Rhodes?
Uh, he'll fly up with me tonight.
Right now, he's on a..
...special assignment.
[intense music]
[music continues]
[doorbell rings]
[doorbell rings]
Yeah?
Oh, I'm, uh, looking for somebody at 1719.
Next door.
Yeah, I know but, uh I got no answer.
Right. Nobody's home.
Are you sure about that? Somebody called a cab, huh..
- When was this? - About ten minutes ago.
- Page? - Well, he didn't gave a name.
No, it must be some kind of mistake.
Mrs. Page is with some people across town
and Earl, he's on a trip.
He gave us his dog to keep warm.
He said he'll pick him up tomorrow.
They, uh, knew the Enfield boy.
The one who was kidnapped.
No kidding!
I wasn't home, but Earl, he told us all about it.
Really broke him up.
Said he just had to get away.
Drive around.
He sets out like that every once in a while.
Well, uh, where would he go?
Oh, North.
Used to live in Vermont, when he was a boy.
So did I!
What part?
I think it's Gaines.
[intense music]
I'll have to leave now, Mrs. Page.
But if you come across a face that looks at all familiar
just point it out to Mr. Franklin.
[Elizabeth] Mr. Erskine.
I think I found him.
[music continues]
Jack Hauser.
Hauser.
Is this the man?
Yes.
I want a complete run down on him.
- The latest report. - Yes, sir.
Lou, may I see you a minute?
- Did you locate him? - He isn't home.
Your hunch might be paying off
the neighbor thinks he might have gone to Vermont.
Well, Mrs. Page, thanks again for helping us out.
How's Mrs. Enfield?
She's getting along very nicely.
[sighs]
I-I just feel so sorry for her.
All that pain..
I-I don't know.
Earl and me, we haven't got much, but we've each other.
And that's the important thing.
How do you feel?
Oh, I'll live.
Jack?
[Jack] 'Hmm?'
Is everything okay?
Sure. Fine. Why?
Well, hadn't you better get started?
Aren't you little worried about
being here with him alone?
Why should I be worried?
I mean..
...what if he got loose?
By some miracle?
- Oh, you tied him-- - You could let him loose.
See, I mean, he might say that he..
...he wouldn't give your description to the police.
'That, uh, that we could go wherever we wanted.'
That we could go out of the country.
I mean, it's that
Baby, or help me pull the trigger.
'Isn't that right?'
Jack..
You go to the crossroads.
Jack--
Give them until midnight to drop the money
and then come back, if you got it or not
it should take you about 20 minutes.
If they've done what we told them to do..
...then I'll cut him loose and he can find his way home.
'If they haven't..'
'...or if you're not back here by 12.30..'
...I'll k*ll him, and leave.
'Is that clear?'
- This is all crazy. - Or..
If you don't stop bugging me, sweetheart
I could just flip into a very weird thing
and k*ll both of you, right now.
[intense music]
[laughs]
Oh, man.
Don't look so downcast.
She'll be back.
Besides, you've still got me.
And even though I might not be the best
host in the world, you..
...you sure won't be bored.
I can promise you that.
[intense music]
[music continues]
What time is it?
[Jim] '11:31.'
[music continues]
[music continues]
How will this be, Mrs. Enfield?
Oh, I think this will be just fine.
Thank you.
Welcome to the Uptown Motel, Mrs. Enfield.
Well, I must say, I'm glad to see a familiar face.
Miss Charlotte Cullen
Senior Resident Agent Alden McHenry.
[chuckles] Oh, fine.
Is there anybody in this place who isn't FBI?
Not tonight, anyway.
Is he serious?
The man who wrote that letter is either a kidnapper
or psychotic, Miss Cullen. You bet he's serious.
[intense music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
Fifty-three to all units.
Subject has picked up the money and is heading North on 76.
She's alone, driving a blue 61 Ford.
Intercept.
[music continues]
Midnight.
What do you think?
Was the money there?
Did our girl find it?
Is she coming back?
Maybe we shouldn't have trusted her, huh?
I mean that was a real gamble, wasn't it?
But then, life's just a gamble, isn't it?
[chuckles]
I mean, how-how do any of us ever really know when our..
...when our number's up?
[intense music]
You tell me that..
[clicks]
[laughing]
[sighs] It's beautiful.
Kind of fun, isn't it?
[music continues]
FBI, hands on the wheel!
Now!
[music continues]
Get out.
What's your name?
Lorraine Chapman.
Is the boy alive?
What boy?
I'm gonna ask you once more.
Just once.
Is the boy alive?
Yes.
I think so.
Is Hauser with him?
- Yes. - 'Anyone else?'
- No. - Where are they?
A cabin.
Stone Creek.
Why did you say you think he's alive?
'We're you gonna k*ll him anyway?'
I wasn't.
[sobbing]
Jack was afraid I'd let him go.
That's why he sent me for the money.
He said if I wasn't back by 12:30, he'd sh**t him.
Do you still wanna save him?
What can I do?
I'll do anything to help.
All of us, no headlights.
Yes, sir.
Get in.
- Look, if Jack sees-- - Get going.
[instrumental music]
Maybe he isn't coming.
Maybe it's just a hoax.
Or maybe he just wants to make sure you're alone.
Well, do you think that we should, uh..
[telephone rings]
- Hello. - 'Hello.'
- 'Who is this?' - Margaret Enfield.
- Did you bring the money? - How's my son?
'Did you bring the money?'
Yes.
Leave it on the bed.
Leave your door unlocked.
Go to the All Night drug store at
twenty-third and Harvard.
When I have the money
I'll phone the public booth there
and tell you where your son is.
The motel front's on Harvard.
You turn to your right as you go out.
Twenty-third is about eight miles down the road.
He just wants to make sure that you're out of sight.
Good luck.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[music continues]
FBI, Page.
[music continues]
Hold it!
Come on.
[crying] I did it for Elizabeth.
What's Elizabeth going to say?
[crying]
- Who is he? - Friend of the family.
[click]
You know something, kid, you're just in the wrong place
that's all, you should be in Las Vegas this week.
Man, I've never seen a run of luck like this in my life.
For what the odds are.
[horn honking]
You can't lose, can ya?
[intense music]
FBI, drop it.
[g*nsh*t]
You okay?
- Oh, thank you. - Alright.
[instrumental music]
Fellas, he'll make a statement later.
Now he's fine, he's been checked out
in the hospital in New Hampshire and he's-he's wonderful.
He just needs a rest, that's all.
Tom, were you scared?
[chuckles] Yes, sir, I sure was, I..
'I figure anything boot camp throws at me now'
it'll be kind of an anti-cl*max.
Boot camp?
Yes, he's going to join the marines.
And how do you feel about this, Mrs. Enfield?
Well, we want him to go to college, but..
...we'll talk about it.
No, no, I think he's man enough to make up
his own mind about that.
Come on, son, let's go.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Enfield.
Elizabeth, what are you doing out of bed?
How are you? A-are you alright?
Fine, fine, fine, I'm fine.
Where's Earl, he..
Earl's going to be so glad to see you.
[laughing]
I'll tell her...few minutes.
[narrator] Jack Donald Hauser who recovered
from his b*llet wound
and Lorraine Chapman
were convicted of kidnaping
and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Earl Page convicted of extortion
is serving a ten year sentence
in the Federal penitentiary at Leavenworth.
