"The Traitor."
[instrumental music]
Steven Ramsey was coming home.
Thirty years ago he had left the United States
as a teenage student.
Now, he was returning as the newly elected president
of giant McCann Industries
and as a Communist spy.
Ramsey was president of McCann in name only.
His real boss was high ranking party member, Louise Freed
accompanying him as his administrative assistant.
His assignment
to replace a Major F.L. Harberg
who had been critically wounded while watching a baseball game
two hours before Ramsey's Berlin flight had landed.
As soon as he regained consciousness
he asked to speak to agents of the FBI.
[groans]
Harberg.
That's it, please.
How is he?
I talked to the stadium people.
Forty thousand potential witnesses to this business
and nobody saw a thing.
Well, he mentioned the name Karl
but I couldn't get the rest of it.
Gaines, Gayne, something like that.
- See what you can come up with. - Okay.
He's dead.
I'm sorry we didn't notify you sooner.
Took us a while to realize that he was serious.
In my profession when a man starts talking
about the end of the world
we tend to put it down to delirium.
I wish I could do that in my profession, doctor.
[instrumental music]
[Louise] 'I think we will be most comfortable here. I..'
Sir, this is a schedule of your board meetings
and these are the research progress reports.
I'll handle those, Sarah.
Uh, yes, but, uh
Mr. Hoffman wishes to deal personally--
I like to take as much pressure off Mr. Ramsey as I can.
It's my job after all, isn't it?
It's alright, Miss Todd, we'll figure out a routine as we go.
Of course, Mr. Ramsey.
Shall I put these on your desk, Miss Freed?
And would call Mr. Ramsey's brother
to see if he's on his way.
Mr. Ramsey doesn't like to be kept waiting.
And are you going to sit in
on the family reunion too, liebchen?
Perhaps you'd be kind enough to slip me a note
from time to time.
When to smile, what to say, wha..
[door opens]
I honestly don't know what I would do without you.
Don't worry, I won't stay long.
I'm just curious.
I would like to meet the man who developed m*ssile fuel.
He works for Burton Oil, doesn't he?
You know, liebchen, I think you and your playmates
have bitten off more you can chew this time.
Alec is as much of a stranger to me as he is to you.
There's not a reason in the world why he should
give me any information at all.
- Darling, do you have a ligh-- - No.
[intercom buzzing]
Yes, Sarah.
[Sarah] 'Your brother's here, Mr. Ramsey.'
Show him in.
Thank you.
Hello, Steve.
Alec.
Well, I'm not gonna say that, uh, you haven't changed.
[chuckles]
This is my administrative assistant, Miss Freed.
How do you do, Miss Freed.
I can't tell you what a pleasure this is.
Mr. Ramsey has spoken of you so often.
Well, if that's all, sir? Excuse me.
Attractive woman.
You think so?
Oh, I-I guess so, if you like the Valkyrie type.
Actually she's been with me for almost 20 years.
Mm, must be valuable to you.
Yes, I suppose she must be.
Sit down, Alec.
Mm, yeah, thank you.
Um, get you a drink?
'No, no, no, thank you.'
Well, Alex.
How are you? How have you been?
Oh..
How's Rosemary?
She's fine.
I, uh...meant to write after the wedding.
Oh, well, so did we, you know.
I wouldn't have deliberately hurt Rosemary
for anything in the world.
Deserting her hurt..
...the divorce hurt.
Well, there was brother Al there ready to pick up all the pieces.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Took a while.
Look, uh..
I, uh, I've got to get back to the lab.
Al.
It took more than a while.
Took maturity, took love.
[instrumental music]
You don't know how I envy you.
Who, the president of McCann, envy me?
I envy you your kids
your wife..
...your...balance.
Al, I'm back home, I've had some hard choices.
Don't shut the door on me.
The, uh...door's never been shut.
Can I have dinner with you tonight?
Like to hear about your work.
You say this Major Harberg gave you no other lead.
- Just, um, just few of 'em. - That's all.
I was told you were the man to see
about rocket propulsion, range.
Well, you could find out the strength and range
of every m*ssile in our defense system
if you had the right fuel information.
Where would an enemy agent start, general?
The supplier, probably.
- And who's that? - Burton.
Their labs develop most of the stuff we're using now.
But everyone who works there has a top security classification.
'I know all the men in charge.'
I...I can't believe that any of them
would sell information like that.
And you're probably right.
Strange thing about traitors
they rarely sell their country down the river
more often they give it away.
Thank you, general.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
Hello, Steve.
- Alec. - Right on time.
Have any trouble finding the place?
Not a bit, you draw a very professional map.
You really wanted to get out of the suburbs, didn't you?
Any neighbors around here?
Not for 20 or 30 miles.
Rosemary will be down in a minute
she's dressing, again.
I'd say she looked nervous, but, uh..
...we get any dinner tonight, it will be a miracle.
[laughing]
[music continues]
Well..
Yes, I, I like this.
Well, it's not exactly a castle on the Rhine
but they say they tend to be cold anyway.
[chuckles] Yeah.
Oh, yes, this is, uh, charming.
'Thank you.'
The boys here?
They're surfers, they're in California.
They'll be back in a couple of weeks.
[Rosemary] 'They better be.'
They've been gone for four days
and already I'm so lonesome I could die.
Rosemary.
Everything changes but you.
Oh, I've changed
a great deal.
[instrumental music]
How about a drink?
Vodka? Scotch?
Vo-vodka and tonic.
Darling?
Yes, fine, vodka.
Good looking boys.
Yes.
[music continues]
I remember that photograph.
Your father had it taken the first year
we were all in Germany.
It was his favorite picture.
Was?
Yes, he, he died last spring.
I'm sorry.
He wasn't.
It was a long illness.
At least he lived long enough
to see everything he predicted come true.
Rockets, jet propulsion, this whole new age.
Remember that ridiculous n*zi professor?
What was his name, who kept trying
to dig information out of dad?
I remember.
You and dad and Alec
kept feeding him all that double talk.
Rosemary, I've thought about those days a 1000 times.
I intended to come back to you after the w*r.
Shalmer, that was his name.
Listen to me.
Steve, it's all over.
All over with.
'Things happened.'
There were certain pressures, mistakes.
Alright.
You did what you had to do.
Rosemary.
Just stop bothering me.
Stop it!
Well, here we are.
Hello.
Here's to a happy reunion.
[instrumental music]
It must have been a charming evening.
You find some other way of getting your information.
I'm through, I've hurt them enough already.
Them, or her?
Seeing her again, after all these years..
...it was fantastic.
Nothing is changed.
Then you certainly better not put her in danger.
And you.
Louise, leave her alone.
She knows nothing of what happened in Germany.
How she was used.
That's over.
It was 28 years ago.
And what about the Cause?
Do you think that they would believe for one moment
that she was not aware of what she was doing?
It doesn't matter how many years ago it happened.
It's still treason.
- I cannot-- - 'Darling.'
These are very emotional times for the Americans.
Think how they'd react to the proof
that the president of a company like McCann
was a traitor.
Even if a terribly clever lawyer..
...is to save your life..
...what would there really be left to save?
It would all be ended
the money, the position.
I have to have time.
There is no time, angel.
You will call your brother tomorrow morning.
Now that's it.
I think you're bluffing.
Yes.
So did Harberg.
[intense music]
[theme music]
Arthur.
Oh, welcome back.
What's that?
It's one of the slugs that k*lled Harberg.
Have a look.
Unusual rifling characteristics.
Mm-hm, it could've been fired
from a foreign made automatic p*stol.
We picked up one of the cartridge casings
at the stadium this afternoon.
Have you had any luck with that name Harberg gave us?
Karl? No, not yet.
What about Burton? Have you got a list from them yet?
No, we've done better than that.
We've narrowed it down to a list of six possible.
The New York Office is checking it out right now.
Security is so tight
no one man has access to all the fuel information.
The six names that we do have
are Burton's top research scientists.
What they don't know, they might be able to guess.
Nobody else could come remotely close.
I'd like to fly up there with Tom this afternoon.
You know, I can't get used to the idea of treason.
A quisling makes my skin crawl.
If we are dealing with one here
pick him up, fast.
I'll call you when I get in.
Good luck.
[instrumental music]
You did what? Why, you--
Alec, I asked you to drop over this morning
because I am in terrible trouble.
Everything I've built, my whole life
is about to blow up in my face unless you help me.
I was going to get into it last night
but I hoped..
Well..
Do you remember Professor Shalmer
when we were working with Dr. Adams?
Yes, I remember him.
He was an espionage agent.
He wanted information on our rocket project.
I got it for him.
You?
It told him how far behind we were.
It told him it was safe to use the V-2 rockets
against England.
I was responsible for that.
And where did you get that information?
I stole it..
...from Rosemary's father.
Steve, I don't believe you--
Shalmer paid me back with a chemical formula
dyes.
When I went to work for McCann after the w*r
that was my first discovery.
In the meantime, the Reds made a little discovery of their own.
'What was that?'
The Nazis kept a record
of our little deal, it was put in
a place called Rastenburg
in East Germany.
I am Rastenburg file number 641.
The Communists found it.
When I went back to Berlin an agent showed me a copy of it
blackmailed me into helping her.
For 20 years I've been helping
getting deeper and deeper until now
unless you bail me out my life's over.
Where are you going?
FBI.
What I want from you, Al, is a complete rundown
of the fuel specifications
of every defense m*ssile in this country.
- Don't be ridiculous. - Listen to me, Al.
I couldn't have gotten the information
Shalmer wanted by myself.
[instrumental music]
What are you talking about?
I used Rosemary.
- She's as guilty as I am. - You..
[dramatic music]
Out! Get out!
Expertly done.
Now, Mr. Ramsey
I will tell you what you're going to do.
Hello, Chet.
Inspector, good to see you again.
Tom Colby, SAC Randolph.
- Chet, I'm glad to meet you. - It's a pleasure, Tom.
The bureau checked the Burton names
through ident for us, Lou.
Shall we sit down?
All six men underwent security checks
including the new one.
'So which is the new one?'
Number four, Alexander Ramsey.
He's chief of basic research.
He replaced a Dr. Donald Adams
his father-in-law, Adams died last spring.
He was head of our rocket program in '39.
Carrying quite a debt load here..
...loans, mortgages.
Primarily hospital and medical expenses.
Adams was ill for more than a year.
[intercom buzzes]
Randolph.
Yes, he is, just a moment.
'Washington, Mr. Ward.'
Hello, Arthur.
Oh, Lewis, we may have a lead on Karl.
- 'Yes?' - Yes.
A nationalist from Harvard's country.
A man named Philip Karl Gayna.
He got drunk in a bar last night
had to be forcibly ejected.
Our informant said he was carrying a g*n
an automatic p*stol.
Do you know where Gayna is now?
He's reported to be in New York.
I've sent his description on to Randolph.
Fine, Arthur, thanks very much.
Chet, there'll be a description coming through from the bureau.
Put some agents on the Code Yellow Consulate.
If he turns up, they'll keep him under surveillance.
Right.
Ramsey, Ramsey..
You know him, Lou?
I know the name from somewhere.
Wasn't there a Ramsey on the cover of a magazine last week?
Yes, that's right.
New president of McCann.
Steven Ramsey, brother.
So Alexander Ramsey has a brother
who's the head of one of the largest
corporation's in the world
and he's up to his ears in debt.
Well, they wouldn't be the first pair of brothers
who weren't on speaking terms.
Tom, see what you can find out.
I'll be at Burton if anything comes up.
Yes, sir. See you later.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[Rosemary] 'Is that you, Alec?'
Yeah, it's me.
Alec, what in the world..
It's only one o'clock in the afternoon.
Are you sick?
- Well? - No, no, no, no, no.
No, I'm not sick.
Uh, sit down.
Something's happened to the boys.
No, no, no, it's not the boys.
- Alec-- - The boys are alright.
Now, listen.
I've been with Steve.
Steve?
He said some things.
I want to hear it from you.
Do you remember when we were all in Germany together
there was a Professor Shalmer
he, he always tried to get information from us
and we used to play games with him
tell him lies, you remember that?
Yes.
Did you ever let Steve look at your dad's notebooks?
Yes, I did.
Why?
He said the only way to throw Shalmer off
would be to feed him nonsense based on fact.
It wasn't nonsense.
He sold Shalmer the true figures.
No.
He was an agent, he's still an agent
first for the Nazis, now for the Reds.
Oh, no.
[instrumental music]
'He's an agent.'
He asked me to work or him.
Who do we call?
The police?
Don't you understand what I'm saying?
You supplied him with information that he sold.
You could go on trial with him.
But I didn't know.
It doesn't matter.
Of course it matters.
You'll have to report it.
And...risk what might happen to you?
I...I tried, I, um..
I-I can't.
- Alec-- - It's too late.
I went back to my office after I talked with him
and I gave him the information that he wanted.
Oh, no!
[crying]
[dramatic music]
[theme music]
Tell me, what time Mr. Ramsey usually get back from lunch?
Usually he has lunch right here in the office.
I can't imagine what's happened to him.
If you have any other appointments here at Burton
I can tell 'em you're in the building.
No, I've seen everyone else I wanted to.
Maybe you better have him call me.
Yes, sir.
He can reach in the office here in town.
[instrumental music]
Shall we strike that?
Yes, but double check the Ferguson file.
[intercom buzzes]
Yes, Sarah.
My brother?
Put him through.
Yes, Alec.
[Alec] 'Steve, trouble.'
What are you talking about?
An FBI man just left here, he's been all over the building
asking questions.
- What questions? - The m*ssile fuel.
Classified files, he's checking everyone that has access to it.
Alright, now, calm down.
'I want that material this afternoon.'
It's being copied.
I want that material.
I'll meet you at the house, I'll make arrangements
to come back here after dinner and replace it.
Six.
Alright, I'll be there at six o'clock.
What if they haven't finished copying it?
It's already finished.
What are you talking about? Why didn't you tell me?
We have no time to waste, this could be dangerous.
What if he breaks?
Suppose he does.
Your brother has a clean record.
But he's in difficulties. he needs, uh, money.
If he confesses to the FBI
that he stole the records, hoping to find a buyer
but didn't have the courage to through with it
they wouldn't look any further.
Oh, stop it, Louise.
Alec would never take the blame for something I put him up to.
Oh, yes, he will.
On the way home, poor Alec
frightened by the knowledge that the FBI has caught up with him
is going to commit suicide.
[intense music]
And what's wrong with it?
He's my brother.
He can absolutely ruin you, angel.
You'll k*ll Rosemary.
Not if you're there to comfort her, Steven.
And, liebchen, you are a marvelous comforter of women.
When you set your mind to it
and when it's the right woman.
'Hm?'
[music continues]
Karl Gayna, please.
Alright, keep after it.
If Gayna's in town, he's staying well hidden.
No sign of him at the consulate.
[door opening]
How'd your interviews go?
I missed Ramsey.
- Has he called? - 'Ramsey? No.'
He may be off in a bar somewhere, licking his wounds.
What do you mean?
Just got back from the McCann building
apparently the brothers went a couple of rounds
together this morning.
- They had a fight? - Mm-hmm.
Real donnybrook, if you can believe this gossip.
- What started it? - A long story.
Receptionist, uh, told the elevator girl
that she'd been looking into Mr. Steven Ramsey's
marital status.
Uh, just for kicks.
Found out that he's single now.
But he had been married in his teens to Miss Rosemary Adams.
Who is now Mrs. Alec Ramsey.
The receptionist felt that, uh, they must have been
fighting over the fair lady.
Who was also the daughter of the late Dr. Donald Adams.
Yeah, the four of them spent several years together
in Germany before the w*r.
Rosemary and Steven Ramsey were married there in 1939.
- Are these facts? - Facts.
I called the legal attache in Barnes.
Rosemary's father left the country
before the United States entered the w*r.
Rosemary, Steve, Alec Ramsey delayed a little too long
and were interned.
Mm-hmm, for the duration.
Well, Alec and Rosemary were.
Steve escaped, made it to the channel single-handed.
Hm.
What was the camp?
Saxberg.
Yeah, I know, he was their only escapee.
Uh, he stayed in England until after the armistice
then he went back to Germany.
Chet..
...Donald Adams was a rocket scientist, right?
Yes.
Were the brothers working
in flying bombs in 1939?
That's right.
[sighs]
Call Steven Ramsey, tell him I'm coming over
to have a talk with him.
[dramatic music]
You're an idiot.
This is the luckiest thing that could have happened.
Lucky, the FBI?
It's a chance you would welcome, if you had any sort of sense.
Handle this inspector properly.
Send him out of here with the right kind of
doubts in his mind.
Then when they find your brother
they won't even question that he has k*lled himself.
[intercom buzzing]
Yes?
[Sarah] 'Inspector Erskine's here'
'Mr. Ramsey.'
Just a minute.
You will get a call saying everything has been
taken care of.
That will mean that I have done my share.
Now, you do yours.
[door opening]
[door closing]
Alright, Sarah, send him in.
Thank you.
Mr. Ramsey.
Inspector Erskine.
Oh, yes, of course, inspector, won't you have a seat?
Thank you.
What can I do for you?
Man, I've never been so glad to see anybody in my life.
I've been stuck up here for an hour.
Oh, that's too bad, this is a private road, you know.
Yeah, no kiddin'. Yours?
- Didn't you see the sign? - I'm sorry. No, I didn't.
Well, look, uh, I'm late.
Uh, hop in, I'll take you to a phone.
Well, listen, I-I know I can get it started
if you just give me a hand.
Oh, come on, be a good fellow, huh?
[intense music]
[music continues]
[engine revving]
I'm sorry, inspector.
I still don't get exactly what you're driving at.
Is my brother under some sort of suspicion?
How much contact have you had with him in the last
None at all.
None?
We, uh, there were personal problems between us.
You tell me what they were?
Is it important?
Might be.
Well..
...my wife, uh
fell in love with my brother.
You see, we were all interned in the same German prison camp
during the w*r.
Yes.
[sighs]
They used to meet during the, um, exercise periods
they weren't aware of the fact that I saw them together.
And then after the w*r, my wife Rosemary married Alec
divorced me, married Alec.
And I haven't seen either of them again until yesterday.
What made you call him then?
- I didn't. - 'Oh.'
He called me.
- Why? - Oh, inspector.
Why, Mr. Ramsey?
Oh, he said, he was in trouble.
He said, there was nobody else to turn to.
I told him to come on over, of course.
- 'What did he want?' - Money.
Evidently there had been a lot of medical bills
he'd borrowed, he couldn't borrow anymore.
I told him I'd look around
see what I could scrape together.
He said that wouldn't be enough, it would be too late.
He accused me of stalling, there was a fight.
He said, I was forcing him into an impossible corner.
He was going to have to try to sell something.
And what was he going to sell?
His house, I suppose.
[intercom buzzing]
Hello.
Yes.
I understand.
Thank you.
[dramatic music]
Mr. Ramsey, you were the only person in the entire w*r
to have escaped from Saxberg.
How did you manage that?
What?
It was a remarkable feat.
- Especially for a man alone. - But I was alone!
It was a remarkable feat!
Are you trying to say that I had help?
Or you think they did open the doors
for me, a little time off for--
For good behavior?
Thanks, Mr. Ramsey.
[instrumental music]
[crying]
[instrumental music]
Mrs. Ramsey, I, uh..
[music continues]
[metal clanking]
[crying]
[car door opening]
[music continues]
- That his wife? - Yes, sir.
I wanted to drive her home but, uh, she won't leave.
And she doesn't want to talk to anybody.
[car engine revving]
She notified the police at 7:30 this morning
that her husband hadn't gotten home.
They noticed the tire marks when they drove in.
She's been here ever since.
- These the Burton papers? - Yes, sir.
I called their security officer and he confirms
these are the only ones missing from the files.
Are there any skid marks?
No, sir, looks like he, uh, he went over deliberately.
You think it may have been suicide, huh?
He was in debts.
He could have been planning to sell this material
and last minute, he changed his mind.
Yeah. Could have.
I talked to their secretary when I called the plant.
She said that he seemed very nervous
and depressed when he left.
- Was he wearing a watch? - Yes, he was.
It's broken on the crash. It stopped at 5:51.
Lou, is the time significant?
Could be.
His brother got a phone call ten minutes later
while I was still in the office.
It seemed to upset him.
Has, uh, has he been notified about this yet?
No, not unless Mrs. Ramsey called him.
- Hm. - What's on your mind?
I spent the night going over
the details of the Saxberg escape.
According to the published reports
it was a remarkable athletic feat
requiring top physical conditioning.
Well?
The year Ramsey got away more than 200 inmates
died of starvation.
Yet this prisoner never missed a meal.
Somebody up there liked him.
Why?
He was a rocketry expert.
Nazis were working on the V-1 and V-2.
Now, he comes back to the United States
and his brother steals valuable m*ssile data.
Well, at least he didn't have a chance to pass it on.
That depends on when he stole it.
That'd be easy enough to copy.
What's the latest surveillance report on Ramsey?
Went to the office at 9:00 this morning.
Still there.
Mrs. Ramsey, I'm Inspector Erskine
with the FBI.
I know this is painful
but I have to ask you a few questions.
Uh, may I drive you home?
Why don't they call? They must have found him by now.
I'm his brother! Why don't they call?
Why should they have found it by now?
Karl said it was an enormously deep ravine.
Well, are you going to take me to the airport or not?
You ought to stay here until this is all over.
Orders, angel.
Evidently they think you can handle
the rest of it on your own.
Oh, Steven, for heavens sake, it would do you good
to get out of here.
And you'll have the rest of your life to comfort
the bereaved widow.
Come on.
Saxberg.
That's like asking me to remember the time
I almost drowned when I was a little girl.
Yes, I remember it.
How far apart were the men's
and women's sections, Mrs. Ramsey?
Mr. Erskine, I, really, I would like to help
but I have so much to do.
And I, I have to call the boys.
That's already been done.
They're being flown back this afternoon.
I've arranged to have someone stay
with you until they get here.
Oh, thank you.
The, uh..
...men and women sections were, uh..
Did you, uh
share the same exercise yard, for example?
No.
Or the same mess hall or the same rest periods?
No, the camp was very large.
I heard that Alec and Steve were there
I-I, I never saw them.
I heard about Steven escape.
Of course, everyone did.
Were you surprised?
Uh, I couldn't believe it.
Mrs. Ramsey..
...did he ever work for the Nazis?
No. Of course not.
What do you mean? No.
Did your husband tell you
why he went to see his brother the day before yesterday?
No.
Steven said that he called him to beg for money.
That's not true.
- Steve called Alec. - I know.
It was easy enough to verify, I asked the receptionist.
Why would Steve lie?
'Why would he bother to lie?'
He also told me that he, he'd seen you two together
in Saxberg.
He implied that you'd been unfaithful.
Steve, why?
Oh, to explain, perhaps, why he hadn't
rejoined you after the w*r.
I mean, if he had worked for the Nazis, he may not
have had the courage to face you.
Mrs. Ramsey..
...do you believe your husband k*lled himself?
We, uh, we found some
top secret papers in his pockets.
Do you believe he's stole them for money to pay his debts?
That's what Steven Ramsey wants me to believe.
[doorbell ringing]
Excuse me, inspector.
[door closing]
Thank you.
Ramsey's surveillance reports he and his assistance
are heading for the airport.
Alright, alert the airport police.
And don't let either one of them board a plane.
Yes, sir. Mrs. Ramsey.
[door closing]
Mrs. Ramsey... there isn't much time.
No, I don't believe for one minute
my husband k*lled himself, inspector.
He couldn't have been alone.
Someone had to put those papers back in his pocket.
He gave them to his brother yesterday afternoon.
Steven Ramsey is working for the Communist.
