[instrumental music]
Oh-ohh.. I wonder what's worse.
The heat or the movie.
Dano, where do they find such bad plots?
Not easy. They gotta think about it.
They can't just lay back and..
Ooh, hello. Hi, sweet thing.
You're a sweet thing, you know that?
- You know she's a sweet-- - Alright, Romeo.
Let's knock it of, huh?
[dramatic music]
Eh, you talking to me?
No, look, you're loitering in front of my theatre.
Now, if you don't like the picture
why don't you get on that bus of yours
and wait for your keeper to take you back to camp?
But don't bother people in front of my place.
- Oh! - Look, buddy.
We're not inmates. We're not trustees.
We're volunteers.
Newstart's not a jail.
No kidding.
Come on, Dano. Forget it.
He'll only call the police. Come on.
[instrumental music]
Dano!
[jukebox music]
[music continues]
Here, Sam.
- Still here? - 'Mm-hmm.'
I changed my mind.
What do you wanna argue with your leader for?
If I tell you to go home, go home.
'You wanna look like something the cat dragged through'
'a knothole for your boyfriend tomorrow?'
[laughing]
Well, it's still not fair to leave you
with all the glasses.
Hey, buddy!
Go on home, maybe I'll close early anyway.
Another five!
[music continues]
Out, out, out!
Now, if I see that crummy Sedan of yours
out front in five minutes, I'll burn it!
[female #1 laughing] 'You're the boss.'
Thank you.
I'll see you, coach.
- Goodnight, honey. - 'Goodnight.'
Night is out, hi. Come on, sit down.
I'll buy you a drink, you don't have to take--
Oh, listen to the kid!
Oh, oh, come on, sweetheart.
I haven't been a kid since I was...six.
[chuckling]
Come on, sit down. I'll buy you a drink.
- Now, quit it. - Look, you're off work.
- But can I buy you a drink? - Look, I told you to quit it!
- I'm just getting friendly-- - No, quit it!
Come on!
[dramatic music]
[door shutting]
Oh!
[coughs]
- You okay? - I'm fine.
Him, I'm not so sure about.
Yeah.. Oh, Betty.
- Hmm? - I better see you home.
I know those guys from Newstart.
Oh, Sam, for Pete's sakes, I'm a big girl now.
Oh, I don't know. It's pretty late.
Hey, relax, huh?
You'll have a seizure.
[giggling]
- Goodnight. - Night.
[instrumental music]
[car revving]
[radio music]
[music continues]
Don't scream.
- Keep driving. - Ohh!
Straight on out of town.
Mister..
- Now, you heard me! - Yeah, no..
[sobbing]
[panting]
[whimpering]
[crickets chirping]
Alright, hold it.
Go straight down there.
- Mister, please don't.. Please! - Come on, move!
[car revving]
[dramatic music]
Now..
...let's, you and me just..
[shrieks]
[dramatic music]
[screams]
[theme music]

[instrumental music]
The wanton k*lling of Elizabeth Kendall on land
leased from the United State's government by an organization
called Camp Newstart, was the spark
that would eventually threaten Garrison, Illinois
with a savage riot.
Within minutes after the discovery
of Miss Kendall's body, special agent, Howard Armstrong
notified FBI headquarters in Washington
of the temper of the town
and requested immediate additional help.
- Tom. - Hi, Howard.
Inspector, glad you could make it.
Howard.
- Any leads yet? - Maybe.
Local police lodged a complaint last night
about, uh, 12:15 from the girl's employer.
He'd been trying to telephone Miss Kendall at her apartment
and hadn't been able to reach her.
He said she'd been annoyed earlier by a man from Newstart
and he was concerned.
Why, did the man threaten her?
No, no, just made a couple of remarks
and offered to buy her a drink..
...but there's been a great deal of tension
on the part of the town's people
ever since Newstart opened.
The girl lived here all her life
she was pretty, well liked.
Now, everybody is about to explode.
Oh, what's the employer's name?
Sam Garry, he has a bar, uh
The 4 Aces Bar on Maine.
I haven't had a chance to interview him yet.
Tom, see if he can give us a description, will you?
[car revving]
Say the girl was stabbed..
Knife penetrated the heart..
...coroner said death was probably instantaneous.
Did he fix a time?
Approximately midnight.
What about prints?
We picked up some good latents on the rear door.
The rear door?
Uh, where's the camp from here?
It's about a mile down the highway.
This is just a spur road that leads into the firing range
when the army used to maintain this post.
Okay, let's take a drive over there, shall we?
Car's right over there.
Who's in-charge of Newstart?
It was organized by a businessman named Talbot.
[instrumental music]
Good, that's very good.
Just be careful with the wiring.
Uh, excuse me, uh..
Can you tell me where I can find Mr. Talbot?
Oh, Mr. Talbot. A gentleman here to see you.
- Mr. Talbot? - Yes.
My name's Erskine, I'm with the FBI.
This is Special Agent Armstrong.
I wonder if we could talk to you for a moment.
About what?
Mr. Talbot, a girl was m*rder*d
less than a mile from here.
What's that got to do with me?
Or any of my men?
It's, uh, pretty hot
I wonder if I could trouble you for a glass of water.
[instrumental music]
Thank you.
Alright, I beg your pardon.
I've been waiting for the police to show up all morning.
Getting madder and more and more nervous.
What is it you want to know?
Mr. Talbot, do you have a curfew at Camp Newstart?
You go right to the heart of the thing
don't you, inspector?
Yes.
Eleven o'clock bed check.
Anyone missing last night?
One man.
Patrick Dano.
'He went in town to a movie and missed the bus back.'
Prior address.
Chicago.
You're going to find that he has a police record
it doesn't mean anything.
All the crimes were minor.
Disturbing the peace, reckless driving.
When he was a kid and he couldn't handle a problem
he used to run away.
Police would pick him up, bring him back to the county home.
When he was seven years old, he was a school dropout
can you imagine that?
And do you know what we found once we thought him enough
to read the instruction manuals?
An electrical genius.
I've already made a place for him in my Hartford plant.
He's not the only one.
And this isn't philanthropy on my part, inspector.
It's good business.
And, inspector, a man isn't guilty per se
just because he comes from a background like Patrick Dano's.
That's perfectly true.
But he isn't innocent per se either, is he?
[dramatic music]
What happened after you hit him, Mr. Gary?
Well, he buckled over but he didn't fall.
I pushed him out the door.
It seems funny in here, I generally don't open at 4:30.
I didn't know where else to go.
Did you see him at all after that?
Mm-mm.
He must have gone straight over to the car.
But you didn't see him?
Nobody saw him. Betty didn't see him.
She'd have screamed if she'd known
he was out there, wouldn't she?
Was there anyone else, uh, in the bar at the time?
No.
No.
You sure?
It was a slow night. I was getting ready to close.
No, we were alone. The three of us.
Had the boy ever been in your place before?
No.
Then how do you know he came from Camp Newstart?
Are you kidding?
I'd know him a mile away.
They're all the same.
Even before he touched Betty I knew what was gonna happen.
You know, who I blame more than that rat little k*ller though?
Talbot. Talbot brought him.
I remember, we had a meeting at the city manager's office.
And Talbot with his big house up on the hill.
He got up and told everybody how good it was gonna be
for the town, you know, to let him start the camp.
Alright, I said, I'm not a public speaker.
But I wanna tell this council now
that if you don't condemn this thing
if you allow those jailbirds to squat not ten miles
from this town, you are gonna rue the day!
You're gonna reap the whirlwind!
Get out, I'm closed!
[dramatic music]
Fred.
Sam?
Is it true?
She's gone?
What happened?
Degenerate out at Newstart stabbed her, Fred.
You a friend of Miss Kendall's?
Yeah.
I was gonna marry her.
Oh, this is Fred Post.
We got one crazy break, Fred.
I saw him and I told everybody in town what he looks like.
And Betty scratched him across the face.
He won't get far.
[dramatic music]
Thanks, buddy. Thanks for the lift.
- I really appreciate it. - Hey, look.
That's the guy that k*lled Betty.
Go see if Sam Gary is in his bar.
Where you been?
Alright, hold it!
[instrumental music]
[siren blaring]
[tires screeching]
[intense music]
Post!
Officer...take this man.
[music continues]
Dano, come on.
Cool it! Cool it! They're FBI men.
Now, it's all over now.
They've arrested the k*ller, it's alright.
They'll take care of him.
They better!
[music continues]
[car engine revving]
Oh.
Thank you.
I didn't k*ll her. W-what would I k*ll her for?
Huh?
But you were in the bar.
Certainly, I was in the bar. I was, I was having some fun.
I, I-I-I asked her if I could buy her a drink.
Then this maniac, back of me..
What happened after he hit you?
[sighs] I don't know. I got..
Turned around and I-I woke up on the road.
Heading North towards Chicago.
No, look, I was out on feet. I told you I got turned around.
Look, you-you-you wanna know what really bugged me, huh?
That sweet town. Hm.
Yeah, that, those fair minded, open hearted
big hearted people, huh.
Sweet gentle folks.
You see 'em back there?
Did you believe that? Hm?
You think they cared about that girl?
Huh, come on.
Every time they were kicking me, they were kicking Newstart.
They were-they were burning the barracks.
They were breaking the lathes.
They've been after us ever since we started.
How about a cigarette?
Oh, thanks.
What made you come back?
I don't know.
Dumb move.
I was..
I was walking along and I, I said to myself
"Oh, this is it, huh?"
I did it now, I might as well find
sweet little gutter to fall into.
My daddy, huh.
I turned around.
Dumb move.
Why?
Well, I figure a gutter
no matter how wet, is better than
having 'em strap you down
you know, pulling the switches.
What don't you worry about that after you've been
charged with something.
Look, are you arresting me, huh?
Who said you're under arrest?
[instrumental music]
This is where you were heading?
Yeah, that's right.
[music continues]
- Hello, Patrick. - Talbot.
I was beginning to wonder if we'd see you back here again.
Yeah, well, I got sort of turned around last night.
[chuckles] Well, I'm glad you found your way home.
Hey, Dano, what happened?
It's a long story.
[indistinct chattering]
I've been on the phone with the field officer.
Nice reception they gave our Mr. Dano.
What's happening?
Well, the leaders are already out on bail.
But the streets are quiet.
Consensus seems to be that, uh
no more reason for rioting now that
Dano is in custody.
Then they come and this guy comes over
and wham! He gets me!
I fall down..
The identification division had its chance to check
his prints against the latents you found in the car.
Yes, sir. They don't match.
'Incidentally, if it, uh, means anything'
the knife he was issued was still on his work table.
He never carries it.
Howard, what part of town did the girl live in?
South Eastern.
Then what was she doing out here?
Well, the, uh, road she was found on
has been used as a lovers lane.
The bartender mention any boyfriends?
Yeah, she had a fiance.
A truck driver named Fred Post.
He lives here in town but he said he was in Omaha last night.
- Better have Omaha verified. - 'Yes, sir.'
If she'd just been in a fight, I can't see her picking up
any hitchhikers.
Lou, um
this is just an impression.
But when I asked Sam Gary if there was anyone else
in the bar during the fight, he said, no.
But he didn't sound too sure.
And I had the feeling he couldn't remember.
[instrumental music]
Dano, can I talk to you alone for a minute, please?
Sure.
Was there anybody else in the bar last night
besides, you and Gary and the girl?
Uh..
Well, there was this, uh..
No, n-not when the fight started.
This what?
I was gonna say there was this tr*mp
this dr*fter, but, uh
he left before we had the fight.
How long before?
Not long, just a few seconds.
So he could have been outside when Miss Kendall left?
Could have.
Can you describe him?
Yes, I think so.
He was about, uh, 40.
Uh, thin and dirty looking.
[chuckles] Hey, he was just a boozer with a brand new $5 bill.
How do you know it was new?
The bill?
It crackled.
[sighs] I don't know. Maybe I dreamed it all.
It isn't a matter of life and death, is it?
Yes, I think it probably is.
[instrumental music]
- Alright, now, wait a minute! - I'm telling you what I heard!
- Will you just wait a minute? - No, I'm just--
You don't know what you're talking about!
What do you mean I don't know what I'm talking about?
You haven't been in there. Orrin goes in there every morning.
He goes right into that place!
- Yeah, well, I'm not talking-- - Wait a minute!
Now, you listen to me, whatever your name is.
- 'Burroughs.' - 'Alright, Burroughs.'
Now, I don't care about all that.
But I know the FBI.
And the FBI isn't gonna turn no m*rder*r loose! No m*rder*r!
Now, I don't care what your friend says
or what he thinks he saw, that's it!
'Now you know what I mean?'
Okay, Fred.
Alright, but he's not gonna talk about the FBI to me.
Alright, take it easy, will you? My head hurts.
Now, look, you see what I'm talking about?
[Charlie] 'You don't even know what you're talking about.'
[Fred] 'Just listen. It's very easy.'
[Charlie] 'I'm telling you..'
- Yes, sir? - Mr. Gary.
Yes, sir.
Could I talk to you privately outside?
Oh, uh, sure.
Is this about the m*rder, inspector?
Yes, it is.
Well, there was a young fellow here this morning
I told him everything I knew.
You've got Dano in custody, I don't honestly see--
But Dano's not in custody, Mr. Gary
we don't have the evidence yet to warrant an arrest.
Now, there seems to be some confusion
as to whether there was another man in the bar last night
just before Dano came in.
Dano says there was and that the man gave you
a brand new five dollar bill, do you recall that?
Yeah. Yeah, I remember the man.
I remember the bill anyway.
But what difference does it make?
Had you ever seen the man before?
No, I don't think he's from around here.
Can you give me any description of him at all?
Well, he was, uh, about forty, thinning hair..
...had a brown shirt, he was very pale..
He had a red kerchief.
Alright, Mr. Gary, much obliged.
[instrumental music]
- Who was that? - FBI.
Well, I, uh...I guess they got it all wrapped up, huh?
Nothing's wrapped up.
Dano's not even under arrest, they turned him loose.
Well, like I always said..
...if you want something done right..
...do it yourself.
[instrumental music]
Good, thank you very much.
Hello, Lewis.
Arthur, how long have you been here?
About five minutes.
Had a speech to make in Chicago
thought I'd take a little detour on the way back
see how you were doing.
Well, uh, we got a suspect who seems innocent..
...a witness we can't find and, uh, a heat wave that won't quit.
Yeah, I see what you mean.
Other than that, we're in marvelous shape.
Oh, incidentally, Lou, Omaha phone.
Fred Post alibi checks out.
That's not surprising.
I think it was unpremeditated,
no planning, no motive.
It was a man who, um..
...might have seen Pat Dano come out of that bar.
Who might have seen someone standing next to that car.
Might be able to tell us some very interesting facts
if, uh, if we could locate him.
Oh, what's the problem, can't you get an accurate description?
We practically got a living portrait.
He could be the mayor of skid row, probably an alcoholic.
Evidently he had a five dollar bill on him.
Not exactly a banker type, huh?
That might depend on the kind of bank he deals with.
Even this man has a saleable commodity.
Blood.
He got money to buy drinks.
Tom, contact all the blood banks in town.
We want a name, even if it's an alias.
Yes, sir.
[instrumental music]
This might be the break we need, Art.
I think that break you need is in the weather.
I had another reason for wanting to talk to you today, Lewis.
The congressman who represents Garrison called the bureau.
He wants to know just how bad the situation really is.
It could get very bad, Art.
But the police have canceled all leaves.
Sheriff's department standing by.
Alright, Lewis, thanks.
Let me know if anything important develops.
Good luck.
[instrumental music]
Alright, did you buy it?
- Certainly. - Okay.
Now, get a hold of everybody you know
and start with Talbot's lab.
Once again, Samuel, no water, little ice and a lot of whiskey.
And stay to the East or North..
...but stay clear of me and my men
we don't want any policemen around when we hit that camp.
Right.
Sam, come on.
[sighs] No more, Freddy.
What do you mean "No more?"
We just ran out. You had enough.
Come on, come on.
Look, the bar is closed
I shouldn't have opened it in the first place
you're talking like lunatics, I don't want any part of this.
Sam..
...nobody much cares what you want.
Now, you worked with her, Samuel..
...but I loved her.
Check?
Check?
I know you loved her but
you're going about this wrong.
No, now, somebody's got to make that little k*ller pay
and, man, he is gonna pay
even if I have to burn the whole town down to get him.
Check?
They gave this address to the nurse at the blood bank.
He said his name was Bert Hammond.
- Hammond? - Yes, do you know him?
Well, of course I know.
Did he come back here last nigh?
Yes, but there must be some--
I'd like to talk to him, please.
- Well, he's quite busy. - Please.
It's extremely important.
Just a moment.
I got your message. Is he here?
- The attender's gone after him. - Good, I had a talk with him.
This gentleman, sir.
Yes, uh, did you want to see me?
Well, no, I was looking for Bert Hammond.
I'm Bert Hammond.
My name's Erskine, Mr. Hammond, this is Mr. Colby.
- Yes, sir. - Well, Mr. Hammond, uh..
The man we're looking for seems to have used
your name at the blood bank yesterday.
Oh, yes, they do that.
I'm the mission captain, uh, they see my name on the door.
Is this man in trouble?
Well, not necessarily, we'd like to talk to him.
But what does he look like? Maybe I can help you.
Oh, he's, um, in his forty's, thin
uh, brown hair, beginning to recede.
Oh, well, there's so many of 'em.
Uh, dark brown shirts, very pale complexion
um, wears a red handkerchief around his throat, uh..
Oh, sure, you mean Porter.
- What's his first name? - William, I think.
Where would he go from here, captain?
Well, let's see, was Porter the one
with the twenty room mansion in Hollywood or an Irish castle.
Wait. Uh, he has a sister.
Uh, he phoned her from here this morning, long distance.
- Morgan, Ohio. - Was that collect?
Yes, he said he was coming home.
There may be a record of that.
May I use your telephone, Mr. Hammond?
Sure. Here, let me show you.
[Howard] 'Inspector.'
Well, it's happened.
The rioters have just attacked Talbot's lab, east of town.
[dramatic music]
[siren blaring]
[music continues]
Come on! Get in there!
[music continues]
Insanity.
Well, even the dullest student
learns his lesson sooner or later I suppose.
I'll close the camp tomorrow.
Isn't that what the rioters want?
Is that what matters, Mr. Talbot?
What the rioters want?
I'm afraid there's no alternative.
Could turn Dano over to them.
- Don't be ridiculous. - What's ridiculous about it?
The boy's innocent, he hasn't done anything wrong.
What have you done wrong?
What do you mean?
Is it your fault they turned against you?
I set up Newstart as an act of friendship..
...I didn't mean to hurt anyone or defy anything.
When I was a poor boy
somebody taught me how to use a lathe.
I was just returning the favor.
I thought it was just good business.
Well, it is.
So why are you quitting?
What you're saying, inspector, is that..
...these rioters here are wrong
and we have a moral obligation to stand up and fight, huh?
How do you feel about that, Mr. Talbot?
You know, it crosses my mind
that there were only fifty rioters involved here.
Which leaves approximately
You know, Mr. Erskine..
...as soon as I get my own home in shape
I think I'll ask some of my friends
if they would like to contribute to Newstart.
Open it up a little.
Yeah, thanks, I understand. Inspector!
Off and clear.
Just got a report that rioting has broken out
in the northern part of town. Looting, assaults.
North, huh? No trouble west of here, toward the camp?
No, sir, it couldn't be quieter.
That's odd.
Well, I suppose we should be grateful for small favors.
Yes, I suppose so.
[instrumental music]
He was always the dearest little boy, I..
We used to call him "Sweet William."
Of course, he hated that.
But it was true.
There was never a cross word, never a frown, it..
He had cause.
How's that, Miss Porter?
Well...he was always...sickly.
You know, oh, if it wasn't asthma, it was colds
and, and headaches.
Mama used to rub his poor little head by the hour.
I believe that's
really why he started drinking.
'If you want to know the truth.'
The headaches?
Well, yes, surely not because mama rubbed his head.
Um, wo-won't you sit down, Mr.-Mr. Colby?
Yes, thank you.
Mama and I..
...always used to say that Will could have been anything
in the world he wanted to be.
President even, if he wanted it.
If he just had his health.
He couldn't go to school..
...because the asthma and he couldn't work, so..
Mama..
...she just told him to stay right here in the nest with her
like a good boy and he did.
Is your mother still alive, Miss Porter?
Oh, no. No.
Mama passed on...nine years ago.
July.
And, uh, Will is just..
...went all to pieces.
He...didn't even stay for the funeral
ran away in the middle of the night.
But I just...I said to myself..
"Let him fly.
"Let him try his wings
"and that little bird will be back again..
...when he's tired enough, scared enough."
I was right, wasn't I?
Yes, ma'am, it looks like that.
Oh, I wish you'd tell me what you think he's done.
Well, um..
We don't know for sure if he's done anything, Miss Porter.
We're investigating a m*rder on a government reservation
he may be involved.
Tell me, Miss Porter, when he phoned you this morning
did he...indicate that he intended to come directly home?
Yes.
Yes, d-directly home and he will too, it was..
Oh, he's specially obedient when he was scared.
And that..
...that's one thing mama always insisted on.
Obedience.
Yes, ma'am.
[male #1] 'Now, the 4:30 headlines.'
'Street fighting has broken out in'
'the northern section of the city.'
'Even as Garrison Police and fire units'
'continue to battle rioters'
'in the eastern industrial district.'
Hey, will you turn that off
and get some music or something, huh?
[male #1] '...have been alerted for possible use'
'and the governor's office is in close touch with local..'
It's crazy bit, huh. That rioting.
Yeah, yeah. Very crazy.
North and east.
I thought it was us they didn't like.
Yeah, but they got to practice. You know, season the troops.
- Dano? - Hmm.
Some of the guys wanna pull out.
You know, you get a town with full of kooks
runnin' around here with g*ns and axes
and somebody's gonna get hurt.
You can be sure of that.
Wanna move while there's still time?
Dano?
Lots of pressure, man.
[instrumental music]
Yeah.
Uh, gentlemen, what's your poison?
- Where's Fred Post? - I wouldn't know.
What am I? His keeper?
No sign of him at the riot areas.
He was a little happy.
Maybe he went to his apartment to sleep it off.
The police have got a look out
on the main highway west of here.
If he tries to get to the camp that way, they'll spot him.
Then you haven't got anything to worry about, have you?
Where is he, Mr. Gary?
The police can't pull units out of the north
and east on speculation.
Maybe you've never seen a full fledged riot, Mr. Gary.
I have and I can tell you that if this thing isn't stopped
you'll wish you hadn't rest of your life.
You don't know how Fred feels.
He loved the girl.
I've known her myself since she was a kid.
But you aren't out rioting.
You seem to have a very old fashioned
set of principles, Mr. Gary.
Like leaving police problems to the police.
- Look, I can't-- - 'He's you friend.'
If he kills Dano, he'll pay for it.
Now, suppose the man he kills, on top of everything else
just happens to be innocent..
Datton's meadows. He's headed for Newstart.
- How many are with him? - I don't know.
The meadow's about ten miles south.
He'll bypass to lookout.
I'll need a helicopter.
And notify the sheriff's department.
Don't regret principles, Mr. Gary.
Just thank God for them.
And, uh..
Uh, this was taken one summer in Maine.
He and mama and I had built these
beautiful sand castles.
And we'd pretend that we were courtiers
and mama was queen.
And, uh..
...we'd live safe and happy..
...in the castle forever.
Then the, the waves would start coming in.
Higher and higher and..
...William would cry.
Call to mama to, to hold the waves back.
Silly, little boy.
- Tom. - Is he here?
Yes, ma'am.
- Oh. - Ellen, I'm home.
Come in, Will.
William Porter?
Yes, sir.
FBI.
