[instrumental music]
Alright, alright, shut up a minute.
You know what's wrong with you?
Certainly. I was born.
Oh, that's beautiful. That's beautiful.
So all I gotta say Michael the martyr behind the wheel, huh?
No, not for long.
Not for long? You bet your sweet life not for long.
You get out the end of this run, you get on a train
you understand?
You can go wherever you want.
You can go to places if you want.
Just keep away from me and my rigs, alright?
Lotteries, tracks, numbers..
How long you been mixed up with these people?
For a while. A year.
You been running syndicate bets for a year?
Every week.
Oh.
My own brother, in my truck, across state lines.
You know that lays us both open
for a federal rap, you know that.
It's a fat-headed law.
People gamble. They always have and they always will.
You set up a dumb rule and someone's gonna break it.
I'm not talking about rules.
I'm talking about a federal law.
You can't open your mouth without talking about rules.
'Walk, don't run. Keep your voice down.'
Go to school. Get a job. Don't make any waves.
'Come on, will you?'
That's beautiful. That's just beautiful.
Stop the world. I wanna get off.
I'm gonna make it.
Yeah, you'll make it. To Leavenworth.
Oh, no, brother. To Mexico.
'I've got my island all picked out.'
Your what?
You mean, you searched through my bag and found
the betting slips and you didn't see this ad about the island?
$10 a month and a 99-year lease.
And no one to bug me.
No one to help you either.
Even Robinson Crusoe had one friend.
I'll have one.
I'll have Jenny.
Just you and the girl, huh?
I know what I'm doing.
[sighs] The boys owe me another month's commission.
When I collect my money I'm gonna take off.
'Then we'll both have what we want, won't we?'
[sighs]
Is that the police?
[brakes screech]
Thank you.
Mr. Colby.
You out of your mind? Is that all you know how to do, run?
John..
Michael! Listen, Mike!
Don't do it.
[grunts]

Tonight's episode, The Quarry.
For weeks, FBI agents in northern California
have been working to develop proof
of a link between La Cosa Nostra chieftain
Frank Williams and the interstate flow
of gambling information.
An informant's tip had indicated
that a syndicate runner would be entering California
by truck on June 2nd.
A search warrant was obtained.
But with the disappearance of the truck's driver
the hot trail had suddenly grown cold.
We found these betting slips by the truck.
The US Attorney felt it was enough to issue a warrant.
The owner of the rig was still conscious when we found him.
He identifies the fugitive as his brother Michael Riley
and he admits that Michael was a runner for the syndicate.
I know, I stopped at the hospital. No sign of a trail.
- Well, none so far. - What about secondary roads?
There's a county highway about a mile to the east.
There's a couple of lumber roads leading into it.
I've got patrols on him, but with any luck
he would've hit one of them in the first 10-15 minutes
and hitched a ride.
Which way does this county highway run?
North and south.
South end of San Sebastian?
Yes, sir. But he wouldn't go that way, would he?
Back into his own home grounds?
His brother thinks he might.
He's in pretty bad shape. Concussion.
All he talks about is Mike. Where's Mike.
It's almost as though he expects him to walk into the hospital
and give himself up.
Might be the best thing he could do.
I don't imagine Frankie Williams is exactly overjoyed
having one of his runners spotted.
Frankie might want to get to him first.
Surveillance on Williams?
On Williams, the hospital, and Mike's apartment.
I'm gonna need some agents from San Francisco.
Request as many as you need.
Yes, sir.
I want him found and I want him found alive.
"Go to jail."
[telephone rings]
"Go directly to jail."
- "Do not pass go." - Matilda.
- "Do not collect $200." - Mattie.
"Go to jail."
"Go to jail."
The story of my life.
And now I have to get past that whole side again.
And do you realize that you own all the railroads?
- 'Barney.' - Hmm?
- Will you get the phone? - Uh-huh.
And the utilities and that I'm mortgaged right up to my neck.
- Hello? - Hello. Mr. Williams?
No.
No, this is Barney Kennon.
'Who do you want to talk to, Frank?'
- Yeah. - Hold on.
It's, uh..
It's our wandering boy.
Go play outside, sweetheart.
Oh, please, let me stay, daddy.
No, no, no, no, no, no. Daddy will take you up back.
But first, you kiss your Uncle Barney goodbye.
Goodbye, sugar.
I'll, uh, see you around.
Have fun.
Mike?
Yeah, I ran into a little problem, Mr. Williams.
Uh-huh. We wondered why you hadn't checked in.
[Michael] 'The police had a roadblock north of town.'
'I shook 'em, but my brother Steve was in the truck'
so they probably know who I am and I wanna get out of town.
Do you think you could send me the commission you owe me?
Well, where are you now?
I'm at..
Mike?
Well, maybe it'd be easier if you just drop the money
someplace and then I could send someone to pick it up.
Easier?
What are you talking about?
Well, I just think I'd rather do it that way.
Okay. You tell me where you want me to drop it.
There's a phone booth in an alley on Main Street
between 9th and 10th.
Just stick an envelope in the directory
and I'll find it.
Alright, but now listen, are you..
[phone disconnects]
[sighs]
Very cool boy.
Too bad he isn't in the brotherhood.
I wish I could trust him to keep his mouth shut.
You want him hit?
Yeah.
I'll get hold of Dave in New York.
Clear it with the High Commission.
Alright.
Where is he?
Somewhere around Main and 9th.
Shouldn't be difficult.
I'll send a man over.
He's got a friend, uh..
Jenny Hall. You know where she works?
Uh-huh.
Well, send somebody to keep an eye on her too.
Maybe she'll show us where he is.
[telephone rings]
San Sebastian Theater.
Jenny?
Hi.
Oh, hey, how was the run? How was Reno?
Loud. Are you alone?
Am I alone? In this booth?
Well, no, actually I happen to have this very skinny lover..
Are there any cops around?
- What's the matter? - I'm in a bind. I need you.
Uh, I..
I get off work in 30 minutes.
But, uh, sooner if I can get hold of the other girl.
Hey, no questions?
- Do you love me? - Yes.
Well, uh, I guess I'll have a couple of other questions
when I get there. Hey, where are you?
I'm at Main and 9th.
I'll take a room at the San Sebastian Hotel.
'Just ask for Mr. Michael.'
- Okay. - Okay. Bye.
[priest] 'May the Lord forgive you by this holy anointing '
'whatever sins you have committed. Amen.'
May Almighty God bless you
in the name of the father, the son..
Your hunch was right, Lou.
He headed back to town. He's calling from there now.
Ask Riley's doctor to talk to him.
If you can, run a trace.
[Steve] 'Inspector?'
- Mike? - He's in San Sebastian.
He just called in to ask about you.
Oh, dumb kid giving everybody trouble.
Why don't you rest now, Mr. Riley?
He's pretty important to you, isn't he?
I mean, why is there an inspector from Washington
after a numbers' runner?
'He's the low man on the pole.'
Riley, he might be important
if he can tie Frank Williams into interstate gambling.
Oh, he won't help you. He's a loner.
He thinks he doesn't need anybody else
except his girl.
What girl?
Je-Jenny Hall.
Do you know where I can find her?
Uh, Temp..
'She works at the San Sabastian Theater.'
She's just like him, she won't help either.
[door opens]
He hung up before the company could get a line on him.
I want to talk to a girl named Jenny Hall.
She lives at 16, Templar Way.
Works at the San Sebastian Theater.
Manitoba.
What did the doctor tell my brother about me?
They said you were getting along fine.
He didn't.
Maybe we can make a liar out of him anyway.
'If I die, Michael will have a real charge on his back'
won't he? I mean manslaughter.
He'll never turn himself in.
Okay. You want him back before Williams chops him down?
So do I. I'll hang in for you.
You keep the charge reasonable.
What, this...this don't mean a thing.
We're just hedging our bets. Right, father?
Right.
Mimi, thanks.
When we get to the kid, keep your motor running.
I'll be right out.
Thank you.
We're about ten minutes too late.
The girl who replaced her said
that she headed west toward Main Street.
She doesn't have a car, there's no public transportation.
Contact the office, ask 'em if they would, uh
check with the cab company, see if there's been
a pickup in the area.
[knock on door]
- Who's it? - 'It's me, Mike.'
Oh.
Oh, Mike.
[sighs]
You're okay. You haven't got any bumps or bruises?
You figured I'd been in a fight?
Why not? You've been in one all your life.
You against the world.
Well, I'm really in one now.
The FBI's after me.
The bets you've been running?
Yeah.
Somebody must have tipped 'em off.
There was a road block at the state line.
I got out alright, but Steve got hurt.
- Oh, my. - Did you hear from Mexico?
Yes, we've got an island.
I paid a year's rent in advance, but..
What do you mean Steve's hurt? Where is he? How is he?
He's got a concussion, it's critical.
Jenny, I've gotta leave town right now.
Will you come with me?
We can't take time to tell your folks.
We can't wait for anything.
'Will you come?'
You know I will.
Williams' sending over my commission
and then we can take off.
[door opens]
[dramatic music]
Please stand away from him.
Go on.
William send you?
Listen, all I wanna do is get out of town.
Even if the cops catch me, I won't say anything.
Well, let the girl go anyway, will you?
[g*nsh*t]
[groans]
Oh, Jenny, I'm sorry.
It's okay. I don't feel anything, it doesn't hurt.
- You think you can make it? - I think so.
[panting]
[engine starts]
- Mike...Mike, I can't. - Yes, you can.
[siren wailing]
[man on radio] 'Control to five.'
Five, go ahead.
'Police on the scene indicate'
'that the hotel manager's description'
'of the missing transient Michaels'
'matches that of bureau fugitive Michael Vincent Riley.'
Do they have a name on the man he attacked?
'Luther George Todd.'
File a review on Todd as soon as possible.
Contact me the minute you have it. Five, clear.
They took the police call at the, uh, at the theater.
This girl with him?
Apparently, Todd followed the girl here.
According to the manager, the girl came in first
asked for Michael's room. Todd was right on her heels.
He went up the room and there was a fight.
- Gunplay? - No shots.
At least, the manager didn't hear any.
Apparently, the kids left by a fire escape
at the rear, went down to an alley.
'We're questioning the other tenants now'
'to see if any of their cars are missing.'
Is Todd cooperative?
He doesn't know what we're talking about.
He was, uh, just walking along
minding his own business when this maniac jumped him.
Stay with the radio, will you Tom?
I'm expecting some information on him.
Yes, sir.
I don't know what you're talkin' about.
I was walkin' along minding my own business
when this maniac jumped me.
You know where Riley may be heading now?
I was walkin' along minding my own--
Has been informed of his rights?
Yes, sir.
Who do you work for, Todd?
I was walking along
- minding my own business - Frank Williams?
when this maniac jumped me.
Oh, Lou.
They called in with a summary we asked for on Todd.
He's one of Frank Williams' soldiers.
Four prior arrests, three convictions
on as*ault with a deadly weapon.
- g*n? - Yes, sir.
Was he armed?
No, sir.
Does his MO indicate he ever uses
any other weapon than a g*n?
I don't think so.
No.
Which one did you hit, Todd?
I don't know what you're talking about.
I was walkin' along minding--
You know, Williams is gonna be a little annoyed with you.
'You not only let him get away, you let him take your g*n.'
Or was that part of the deal?
Maybe you were playing both ends against the middle.
'Maybe they bribed you to let 'em get away.'
After the the city books him, ask the US Attorney to add
harboring a federal fugitive to the charge.
- Yes, sir. - Hey!
You gonna be talking to Frankie?
Yeah.
You charge me like that, he'll think I double-crossed him.
She threw a lamp at me.
And you shot her?
Well, after she threw the lamp.
She attacked me. I had fired in self-defense.
Did Riley take your g*n?
- It's gone. - How bad is the girl hit?
I don't know.
May be bad.
They can't have gone far on foot.
Any cars reported stolen locally?
- Nothing yet. - 'Better search the area.'
Notify all doctor's clinics and drug stores in the county.
Circulate pictures of the two of them as soon as you get 'em.
Yes, sir.
Mike?
Oh, Mike. Mike.
[groaning]
Still with me?
Oh, boy, I-I don't know.
We'll head for this motel I know about.
Oh, Mike..
Mike, I wanna go home, please.
Someone will help us.
No, nobody's gonna help us.
I thought Williams would, but you saw what happened.
We're on the island already, you know.
Just the two of us.
- Oh.. - Stay with me.
We'll go check in at the motel
and then we'll get your shoulder fixed.
But the owner will see us, Mike.
No, this guy minds his own business all the way.
I know the man, there's no problem.
[jazz music]
[distant laughter]
[laughter]
Just follow me.
[indistinct] We've had a little accident.
Uh, have you got some extra towels or, uh, somethin'
to make a bandage, some gauze?
- You want a doctor? - No.
I'll try to see what I can find.
Okay, thanks, Cliff.
This is Cliff Wales. Can I speak to Mr. Williams?
Well, I heard he was lookin' for Mike Riley.
Tell him Mike's here.
My place, with the girl.
Hello.
Mr. Skinner.
Erskine.
[laughs] Yes. Erskine.
I'm sorry. I could have sworn that the maid said Skinner.
Well, you're gonna have to speak up for Mattie.
She's getting a little deaf.
Didn't she even offer you a drink?
I know you're a busy man, Williams.
I won't take much of your time.
Listen, don't be ridiculous.
I've never yet been too busy to speak to a servant
private or public.
- You're sure? - Quite.
[sighs] Well, sit down, sit down.
We had a talk this afternoon with a friend of yours.
Luther Todd.
- Luther? - Todd.
I can't place him, Skinner.
Can you place Mike Riley?
I knew a Don Riley once, I think.
Hm. What about Barney Kennon?
Oh, well, Mr. Kennon is the vice president
of one of my lending companies, my daughter's godfather.
Upstairs now, as a matter of fact.
Oh, is he?
Well, perhaps he ought to be in on our meeting then.
No, he is taking care of some business for me.
I wouldn't want to interrupt him.
I see.
Skinner, I wonder if you'd excuse me now.
My daughter is waiting for her bedtime story.
Certainly.
Good night.
Oh, by the way
could you give Kennon a message for me?
Tell him we've got everyone of your executioners
under surveillance and remind him that
if anything happens to Mike Riley, one of the things
we serve is warrants, publicly or privately.
Thanks, Freddy.
Frank.
[telephone ringing]
[distant laughter]
[male #1] 'Answer the phone.'
[female #1] 'Yeah, answer the phone.'
'What are you doing here?'
'I didn't know you knew Terry.'
[male #1] 'Terry who?'
[laughter]
Can you hold it down in there a little?
[laughter]
Shut up!
[female #1] 'Who's your friend?'
[male #1] 'Keep it down.. I just paid the rent.'
How you doin', baby?
I'm cold as ice.
Well, your forehead's real hot though.
Oh, c-cold inside, I can tell you that.
- Who you calling? - Nobody.
Just tryin' to see if I can find a clinic.
Come on, baby, we gotta get you to a doctor.
Can't they come here?
Yeah, but it might be a waste of time if you need surgery.
- What about.. - We'll be back.
Just keep the room for us, will you?
Yeah, but what about the money?
We'll be right back.
Sure.
Has Kennon left the Williams' home yet?
Alright, if he does, keep an open surveillance on him.
Let him know you're there every minute.
Lou.
Just had a call from the police.
They have a stolen auto report from a man who says
he parked his car in the alley this morning.
He isn't sure of his license number.
- So we're checking with DMV. - Don't wait for it.
He's had time to change the plates by now anyway.
I want every agent and police officer in the area
to have a description of the car as soon as possible.
- Yes, sir. - Yes? Yes, sir.
Inspector, the bureau on line one. Mr. Ward.
Thank you.
- Yes, Art. - 'Have you located the boy?'
Not yet.
Well, it looks as if you're driving Williams up the wall.
There's been activity in Denver, Los Angeles
Seattle, and Vegas.
Any known executioners on the move?
Danny Biggs got as far as the ticket counter
at LA International before he noticed
he was under surveillance and he turned around and went home.
What about Foster in Chicago?
We haven't been able to locate him yet.
Which brings up a point
we can't track them all down for you.
'I've agents at the airport here around the clock.'
What about private cars? You can't stop 'em all.
Art, all I wanna buy is time.
Obviously, Williams wants Riley as badly as we do.
I'll block him as long as I can.
Alright, we'll keep the lines open
to all major cities for you.
Feed you any pertinent information
as soon as we get it.
Alright. Thank you.
- Goodnight, Lewis. - Goodnight.
[buzzing]
Oh, has the.. Has the nurse stepped out?
I didn't see anyone.
Well, I'm Dr. Malotte. Come right in.
Now, we've had a little accident. It's her arm.
I think I got the blood stopped.
Uh, we were fooling with this g*n.
I thought it was empty.
[Dr. Malotte] 'Uh-huh.'
It's a fairly clean wound.
It looks like the b*llet went on through.
Would you come in here, please?
Just easy does it.
That's it.
Just wait out here, please.
I want him with me.
Okay.
Alright.
Alright, forget it.
But let me tell you something.
We got long memories out here.
The next time you decide to come to Frank for anything
you better think twice. Okay?
Barney..
...I want Mike out of the way by morning.
Listen, if I could get by that government lineup out there
I'd do it myself.
But I can't. I can't do that.
What's the name of your man at the motel?
Wales. Cliff Wales.
Well, he's on the scene.
Frank..
...he isn't reliable.
You make him reliable, Barney.
We'll get rid of him later.
[dials the telephone]
[ringing]
Encino Oaks Motel.
- Hello, Cliff? - Yeah.
Barney Kennon.
Is our boy still there?
Well, he cut out.
Cliff, I..
I thought I told you to keep him there.
I tried, Barney.
He said they'd be back. I think they went to look for a doctor.
What doctor? Where?
I don't know, but he told me to keep the room open.
Hang on.
They're gone.
But he expects them back.
- Cliff? - 'Yes.'
This is Frank Williams, Cliff.
Yes, sir, Mr. Williams.
Do you have a g*n?
Well...yes, sir, but I'm not--
'I wonder if you'd do me'
a tremendous personal favor, Cliff.
I wonder if you'd go to their room and wait for them
and take care of them when they come in.
'Do you have a place out there'
'where you could bury two people?'
Well...yes, sir.
It would be worth 10,000 to me, Cliff, okay?
Okay.
[Dr. Malotte] 'Feeling better?'
Good. She'll be weak for a while.
She's lost a considerable amount of blood.
But there were no bones broken or arteries severed.
How much do I owe you?
[sighs] Well, I'll see if the nurse is back. She does the billing.
Okay, baby?
Oh, they're never around when you need 'em, are they?
Uh, I'll need your name and address.
We're just passing through. What's the charge?
Oh, make it ten dollars.
Thanks.
- Uh, would you like a receipt? - No, thank you.
Oh..
My head..
[groans]
That's right, that's the Parkway Clinic on 40..
Let me go.
Right. We're on our way.
b*llet wound, Parkway Clinic.
[groans]
Oh, I'm sorry, baby.
Oh, Jenny, have we got that towel?
- The what? - The towel.
The towel we used to stop the bleeding.
Oh, man, it's got the name of the motel on it.
[tires screeching]
Oh, excuse me.
I-I'm looking for the doctor who treated the b*llet wound.
[groans] Thank you, nurse. I got..
- I'm Dr. Malotte. - Please, please don't get up.
Uh, Inspector Erskine, doctor, with the FBI.
- This is Mr. Colby. - Doctor.
What happened to you?
[exhales deeply] Well, I was on the phone.
That's-that's all I remember.
'This young girl came in with a b*llet wound.'
'She was with a young man.'
I had your description of that Michael Riley.
I...I think this was the man.
How long ago did they leave, doctor?
Oh, just a few minutes ago.
He came back for a towel.
Were there some markings on this towel?
Yes, yes, there was, uh
a name of a motel on it.
- What motel? - Oh, I..
I couldn't make it out, it was too faded.
Well, are there any motels near here?
Yes, there are several in the area.
The nearest one is the Encino Oaks.
Well, we won't trouble you anymore. Thanks very much.
Goodbye.
[engine sputters]
What's the matter?
We're almost out of gas.
[sighs]
There's a gas station.
Oh, wait, there's a taxi.
Yeah, they probably got a description of this car
all over town anyway.
I'm gonna ditch it.
Take us to the Encino Oaks Motel?
[man on radio] '...federal fugitive on interstate gambling charges.'
'Riley and woman companion believed driving stolen car.'
'Description, 1962 station wagon.'
'Tan and brown in color.'
'If observed, notify immediately.'
[tires screech]
[g*nsh*t]
[Erskine] FBI, drop the g*n.
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nshots]
[tires screeching]
Ambulance.
- Is he awake? - Yeah.
Do you have any news about my girlfriend, Jenny Hall?
She'll be alright.
And my brother?
Your brother died at 6:00 this morning.
Well, who do I give my facts? To you?
Would you like a lawyer present?
No, I read the paper about my rights.
'I know what I'm doing.'
What do you want to tell me?
About Frankie Williams' connection
with those betting slips.
Where should I start?
When did you begin working for Williams?
[male narrator] Based on the testimony of Michael Riley
indictments were returned against Frank Williams
Bernard Kennon and six others
charging violation of the interstate transportation
in aid of racketeering statute.
Clifford Wales and Luther Todd were sentenced
to five years each for attempted m*rder.
Michael Riley was convicted of manslaughter
and sentenced to a term in the state penitentiary.
