[music stops]
[dramatic music]
We asked you not to make trouble, Mr. Clay.
After all, people retire here to get away from trouble.
And then we asked you to move, remember?
And we told you what would happen to you if you didn't.
What'd you think, we're kidding? Huh?
[music continues]
[car horn blaring]
I'll say this for you, David
you're a man who makes his presence known.
Wendell, to everything there is a season
and a time to every purpose under the heavens.
Time to pussyfoot and a time to make noise.
Time to mourn and a time to dance.
You know what we should have brought? Records.
What we should have done is called him.
Suppose the poor man's asleep.
Now, we'll wake the poor man up.
Nobody's supposed to sleep on his birthday.
Besides, I want this whole place to know.
We're getting married.
Percy Clay, after all
he was the one who introduced us, wasn't he?
No. Wendell introduced us.
Wendell? Is that a fact?
I was a fool. I should have kept her for myself.
Yeah, well, it's all the same.
Clay would have introduced us sooner or later.
[doorbell dinging]
[music continues]
Maybe he's..
[engine starts]
- Where'd he come from? - From the back.
[knock on door]
[music continues]
Faye, call an ambulance.
[grunting]
Ah, it's no use, Wendell, did you see his skull?
Yeah.
Is your heart alright, Wendell?
Yeah. I'm okay.
You got your nitroglycerin tablets?
Yes, right here.
- They're coming they said. - No, honey.
- Stay away. He's dead. - Oh!
What about that man in the front?
Well, he was young, wasn't he?
Young. Dark.
That's not much, but the police would want
anything they can get.
Dave, you're not going to the police.
- Now, Faye-- - You can't go.
Honey, he's been m*rder*d.
Alright, listen to me, will you please give yourself 24 hours?
What are you talking about 24 hours?
- We can't. - I know, I know.
Please, David.
If you still want to call them tomorrow, alright, fine
but don't make a mistake like this
that we'll regret the rest of our lives.
Look, Faye, what?
Trust me, I'll explain it to you later.
Come on, he's dead.
We can't help him now.

[instrumental music]
The slaying of retired law professor, Russell Clay
was to mark the reopening of a vicious mafia vendetta
that had lain dormant for 20 years.
On the day of his death, Clay had sent a letter
to the agent in charge of the Tucson FBI office
Ellis Harman, stating his belief
that La Cosa Nostra chieftain, Leonard King
was gaining a toehold in Paradise Regained.
To fully investigate the serious implications
of Clay's m*rder, Harman had requested assistance
from Washington.
He was the man who convinced me to go into the bureau.
Dean in my law school.
He used to say to me, "Lewis, stay involved.
A job doesn't stop at 6 o'clock."
I never met a man I learned more from
or a man I was fonder of.
Well..
Oh, I, uh, I talked to the switchboard girl
at the ambulance service.
She said the voice on the phone that night
definitely belonged to a woman.
You interviewed the neighbors?
They were all asleep or away, no one heard a thing.
Of course he was in a new section.
The houses on either side are vacant.
I've also asked Mr. Roland
to come to the office for an interview.
He's a managing director at Paradise Regained.
He may be there by now.
[instrumental music]
Mr. Roland, Inspector Erskine.
Mr. Roland.
- This is Mr. Durant. - Mr. Roland.
I'm, uh, sorry we kept you waiting.
Oh, that's alright, I just walked in a minute ago myself.
I can usually make it to LA from Paradise Regained
in about an hour, but, uh, the traffic..
Well, uh, w-what can I do for you, Mr. Erskine?
Uh, Mr. Roland, you're the managing director
of, uh, Paradise Regained?
Yes, I am.
In a conversation with Mr. Durant
Mr. Clay mentioned that you had spoken together
about La Cosa Nostra's infiltration
into the community, is that right?
Well, s-spoken? Uh, I-I don't know what you mean by that.
Did you tell him that Leonard King
was lending large sums of money to Reese Enterprises?
No, I didn't, I said that our private bank in the village
was lending him money.
The bank is owned by Jim Evans, isn't it, Mr. Roland?
Weren't you ever worried that Evans works for Leonard King?
Uh, Mr. Durant, I don't know anything at all
about Leonard King. I-I work for Norman Reece.
The way Mr. Reece chooses to get his money is his own business.
The impression on Wall Street seems to be
that Reece has overextended himself.
It seems a little odd that Evan's would be so willing
to lend him money, don't you think?
Hm, no. Not at all. Uh, not if the grapevine's right.
Well, what does the grapevine say?
Well, I guess it's no secret.
Uh, Mr. Reece is betting everything he has
on the waterworks bill.
You know, w-without that, uh, artificial lake
that he build at Paradise Regained
the whole development would blow away
but, uh, that's all this part of the country needs anyways
cheap water and lots of it.
His new proposal would provide it.
If that referendum passes, uh
land values around here will skyrocket.
And if it doesn't?
We'll, uh, take a beating I guess, but, uh
I don't think it'll be fatal.
Uh, he had just, uh..
Taken a partner?
Like Leonard King?
I wouldn't know about that. That's not my concern.
According to Clay, you were very concerned about it
at one time.
[Roland] 'No, uh, h-he was.'
I was just trying to be a good listener.
Uh, look, I-I don't even know if there is a mafia
but, uh, if there is, that's the FBI's concern
not mine, isn't it?
Alright, Mr. Roland, thank you very much.
Look, uh, Mr. Erskine, I hope you understand
I'm perfectly willing to cooperate in any way I can.
You're short of personal involvement, you mean.
Well, yes.
Who does the hiring at your office?
I do.
Would you be willing to take on one of our agents
as an accountant?
- Certainly, but I-- - Fine.
Mr. Colby will be by sometime tomorrow then.
Thank you again.
Sleep soundly at Paradise Regained
like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand.
Where's Evans?
King's got him placed outside of San Francisco.
Evans flew up there this morning.
[g*nsh*t]
- Alright, James, what else? - That's all.
Who handled that?
A kid named Harris they brought over from Denver.
Ten thousand acres of desert to bury the man in
they leave him in a pool.
[g*nsh*t]
Well, next time, Len, I'll hire a fortune teller
to warn us about friends dropping over.
Jim, don't get smart with me, I'm not in the mood, you know?
Harris got their license number.
He's running it down now.
Alright.
When you find him, make sure they won't hurt us..
...but be careful
because if you drop the ball one more time
if you put one more crimp in this operation, Jim..
...you'll regret it till the day you die.
- Clear enough? - Yes.
Now..
...how did Reece react to the k*lling?
He was shocked.
[g*nsh*t]
I talked to him just before I left.
He also wants a hundred thousand dollars.
Promise it.
Tell him you can't deliver it till next week.
The referendum's dead, you'll announce it Monday.
[g*nsh*t]
So you bought yourself a retirement village.
Yes, the first shake of the tree, James.
After that, comes the Reece Hotel
the Reece shopping centers.
[scoffs]
- What's the matter? - Nothing.
Your nose is still out of joint
because I went after Reece Enterprises
instead of the ones you recommended?
Well, you know, there's a story going around about that, Len.
I don't say there's anything to it, but..
You're gonna tell me anyway, aren't you, James?
Just for my own good.
[g*nsh*t]
Well, they say, that, uh, you're not after Reece Enterprises
but after Norman Reece himself.
A personal vendetta, and they even say
that the high commissioner's asked you to pull out
too little profit for all the work.
You got a real ear for rumors.
Those are really very funny.
[g*nsh*t]
So is the reason they give for the vendetta.
They say Leonard King spent one night in jail in his life
twelve hours in the drunk tank
after being beat up in a barroom fight by Norm Reece.
'And they say that King has not forgotten his humiliation'
'in 20 years.'
'The blood, the girl he was with'
'laughing every time Reece clobbered him'
the smell of the tank.
Naturally, I take all this with a grain of salt.
Naturally.
- I mean, if, uh-- - It's deadly.
Tell your boy, Harris, I want his witnesses wrapped up
before the official takeover.
And bury him in the desert this time!
[g*nsh*t]
[instrumental music]
Gin.
You're kidding.
[chuckles]
Eighteen, thirty-two, fifty.
That's it. Three blitzes in a row.
You're gettin' worse.
I hate a triumphant winner. Can't you be a little humble?
- You're ready, Faye? - You two go on ahead, Wendell.
- Coffee is almost ready. - Okay.
Deal amount?
I-I've had enough, Wend. Do you mind?
You okay? Everything alright in here?
- No, nothing's right. - Dave--
No.
What are we playing this crazy game for?
Rus Clay was our friend. We saw the man who m*rder*d him.
[Faye] 'We saw a man--'
Well, at least we should tell the police that much.
Faye, I'm sick of secrets. And what about Wendell?
Now, we've got him breaking the law.
There's no reason why we should go to the police.
We were witnesses.
It's our obligation to tell the police what we saw!
Did she ever...explain this thing to you, Wen?
David, I'm from Maine.
Down east we don't ask a friend too many questions
we figure if he has something he wants us to know..
...he'll get around to it, sooner or later.
- When I was 19, I k*lled a man. - 'David.'
I'd just gotten my seaman's papers
I shipped out from San Francisco through the canal
on the old Marie Lasseter.
Cook named Dennison was on my back from the start.
When we hit Charleston, I went ashore, he followed me.
I guess he figured I had money.
He jumped me on the dock with a knife.
I turned the knife back on him..
Stabbed him in the stomach.
I didn't go to the police that time either. I jumped ship.
'There's still a warrant out on me for m*rder.'
My name is different, but...my prints are the same.
I see.
Well..
[instrumental music]
[woman on phone] 'Operator.'
Get me the sheriff's office, please.
'Thank you.'
David, I love you so much that I'll wait through the trial
and your sentencing if it comes to that
but I don't think it's fair.
You can't help Russ
you can't tell the police anything definite.
'You're wasting everything on a gesture.'
That doesn't seem fair at all to me.
[man on phone] 'Sheriff's office. Sergeant Bray.'
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
[door opens]
Well, Inspector Erskine, you're very prompt.
I'm Norman Reece.
Mr. Reece, it's kind of you to see me on such short notice.
- Won't you sit down? - Thank you.
No, thanks.
Well, now, what can I do for the FBI?
Mr. Reece, are you acquainted with a man named Leonard King?
The gangster? I've met him 20 years ago.
- You haven't seen him since? - No, I haven't. Why?
That he isn't a partner of yours?
Uh, silent or otherwise?
[chuckles] Are we thinking about the same Leonard King, inspector?
Because the little toad I have in mind
I wouldn't trust to shine my shoes.
- 'It's the same Leonard King.' - No!
He's not a partner, silent or otherwise.
- Did you know Russell Clay? - Yes. Certainly.
That was a terrible thing.
I understand he was a friend of yours.
Yes, he was.
What happened? Uh, attempted robbery?
We're not sure.
But there's some indications that La Cosa Nostra
may have been behind it.
La Cosa Nostra?
[chuckles]
- That's ridiculous. - 'Why?'
Well, Paradise Regained
is hardly the kind of operation to attract La Cosa Nostra.
We believe they're already there.
In fact, you've been dealing with them
for the last six months.
Are you out of your mind?
Did you borrow money from the village bank?
Well, I may have, I don't see that
that's any business of yours.
The president is a man named Evans?
- Yes. - 'He's a member.'
He takes his orders from the little toad.
I don't believe one word of that.
Mr. Reece, La Cosa Nostra is a cancer in this country.
Pretending it isn't there won't make it go away.
Has to be cut out every time it's found
but the bureau can't do it alone.
We need the help of every private citizen.
When's your next meeting with Evans?
Alright.
If you should change your mind
you can reach me at the Los Angeles office.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
Hot enough for you, Norman?
Hm? Oh, it's fine. It's fine.
Well, if I had known it was going to depress you so
I wouldn't have granted you the new loan.
The day loans depress me, Jimmy, I'll get out of the business.
- Then what is it? - It's nothing.
Oh, come on.
You can tell your friendly neighborhood banker.
Alright, rumors.
Rumors? About what?
World w*r III?
I hear you're involved with Leonard King.
Who's Leonard King?
The head of the Cosa Nostra out here.
[laughing]
[coughing]
Well, I-I didn't mean to break you up with this.
[laughing]
You know..
You know, I told you the new loan was okay?
That you didn't have to wait till next week for the cash?
Yeah.
First you give my bored time
to investigate rumors we'd been hearing.
You mean that I'm involved with..
That the Cosa Nostra's behind you.
Now, come on, Jimmy, you know better than that.
[laughing]
Okay, alright, I apologize.
Let's forget.. Let's forget the whole thing.
No. None of these faces look familiar.
Oh, excuse me, Mrs. Dreiser.
Hello, Bryan, the agent who met me at the airport
said you wanted to see me right away.
Yes, we found the bakery that provided Clay's cake.
This is the woman who made the sale.
She's almost positive that Clay himself was not the buyer.
There were three people, two men and a women.
According to a conversation
they all came from Paradise Regained.
Mrs. Dreiser, I'd like you to meet Inspector Erskine.
- 'How do you do, inspector?' - How are you, Mrs. Dreiser?
Uh, please, Mrs. Dreiser, go ahead.
No. Nothing. I'm sorry.
Did any of these people call each other by name?
No.
Oh, the smaller of the two men
kept calling the woman darling and honey.
They were very happy.
I think they were going to be married.
They kept asking about a wedding cake.
No, wait.
They did call the other man by name. What was it?
Wally.. Wen..
Wendell. Wendell.
Do you remember anything else about him?
Well, he had an accent. Eastern.
- New York? - Flatter than that.
- New England. - Yes.
Alright, Mrs. Dreiser, I think that'll do it for now.
Thanks very much.
For what? Just being a citizen?
- Just being a citizen. - Hm.
Bryan, what's the population of Paradise Regained?
About 30,000.
Well, check every source available
for his identity.
Put every man available on it.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[doorbell dinging]
Yes?
- Oh, uh, Mr. Price? - 'Yes.'
Sir, I'm with the, uh, security office
here at Paradise Regained.
I wonder if I could talk with you for a moment.
Well, uh...what about?
- Uh, are you alone, sir? - Yes.
Well, it's in connection with the Clay m*rder, Mr. Price.
Actually we'd like you to come down at the regional office
if you have time.
You mean, uh, right now?
[scoffs] Well, yes, sir. We just like to ask you a couple of questions.
I have my car right out here, uh, it won't take long.
Well..
- Yes, alright. - Good.
[dramatic music]
Wait a minute, I, uh..
- I forgot my cigarettes. - Oh, that's okay.
[music continues]
[music continues]
[tires screeching]
[tires screeching]
[music continues]
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
- Ready? - I think so.
Yes. That's the man they called Wendell.
Thank you, Mrs. Dreiser.
Ma'am.
Alright.
Hold it. J-just a moment.
I see that the coroner's report that there was some sort of, uh
stains on his fingers.
Yes, apparently ink of some kind.
Did he have a pen in his pocket when he was brought here?
- No, he didn't. - Or a handkerchief?
Yes, he had a handkerchief.
Freshly laundered, ironed.
- None of these stains on it? - No, sir.
Alright, thank you very much.
Bryan..
...when you went through Price's apartment
were there any signs of a struggle?
Any...overturned ink bottles or stains?
On the contrary, everything was quite neat.
He seems to have been a very meticulous man.
Why? What's on your mind?
I don't know. Nothing really.
Except the nagging picture of a meticulous man
with ink stains on his fingers.
Go back there.
[dramatic music]
Okay.
Where's your hat?
You got a hat?
Dave, I can't go barging in
on your niece like some relative.
Now, it's all arranged.
You know Laverne, she'll treat you like one of the family.
Honestly, I-I just can't believe this.
- What's happening? - Here.
Are you going to stay with Laverne too?
No, I'll drive you into LA and get you settled over.
I got some things to wind up here.
I'll be with you in a couple of days.
But, Dave, you're in the same danger I am.
Neither one of us is in danger.
We don't know that Cass' m*rder*r was after Wendell.
Well, then what's all this
"Here's-your-hat, what's-your-hurry bit?"
- I want to stay with you. - Oh, Faye.
Oh, honey, please stop fighting me on this.
There's probably no danger, but if there is
I want you out of it.
Go stay with Laverne. Be a good girl.
I'll be with you in a couple of days, okay?
Okay.
Come on.
[instrumental music]
Thank you.
[dramatic music]
Yes, sir, I noticed the uncovered typewriter too.
Looks as though he may have been interrupted
right here at the desk, doesn't it?
Yeah.
Here's the reason for the smudge on his finger.
He changed the ribbon.
The new one's almost unused.
Something's been written on it though.
Like what? A check, a note, a letter?
I'll send this back to the lab, see what they can come up with.
Well, your boy, Harris, is getting better
isn't he, James?
He didn't bury his man in the desert
but at least he chased him there.
That's close.
Alright, Len.
There is one little thing that puzzles me though.
If he has the woman's address, how come he hasn't hit her yet?
I told him not to.
You don't have to wait until he finds
the other man to hit her, Jim.
No.
If I do, and this thing explodes, and it will
do you know who's going to be blamed, don't you?
Me!
And you know what you're going to say?
You're going to say, "Sure, I told him to make a hit
"but I didn't tell him to turn it
into a St. Valentine's day m*ssacre."
But that's exactly what you're telling me to do.
Now, this thing has gotten out of control.
Time to call a hog.
Uh-huh.
Think about it.
Look, Jim, don't worry.
If it bothers you, fine, you can bow out.
I don't want you to do anything that'll make you uncomfortable.
'I don't want to twist your arm.'
But you'd go ahead with it anyway.
Probably, yeah.
I tell what you do.
You've been hitting the ball pretty hard lately
why don't you take a little vacation?
No, I'll handle it.
No, I'm serious.
You and Charlotte could go to Bermuda.
I said I'll handle it. Do you want an affidavit?
Suit yourself, Jimmy.
I'll call you.
Oh, Jim, you might as well start streamlining
Reece's operation too.
Now that the waterworks bill is dead
I'll send somebody over to the village tomorrow
to take the managing director's place.
- What's his name? - Roland.
But, uh, I don't think Reece will sit still for that
Roland's been with him for..
I'll have Roland out by tomorrow afternoon.
Good.
You're joking, of course.
I'm a banker. I never joke.
Without the referendum, your whole operation is in trouble.
I'll bring in the water myself.
- On what? Your back? - I can get financing.
Norm, Norm..
...my bank holds paper on you
amounting to half a million dollars.
Principle and interests, and most of those notes
are short term and are callable now.
Well, extend them. You know I'm good for it.
I don't know any such thing.
I'd say looking at your Paradise Regained operation
that it, well, that the whole thing has been badly managed.
Badly managed?
Roland is the best man in the business
and you know it.
Dump him.
No, it's out of the question.
I'm sorry, I can't stay here and argue with you.
Your new partners want Roland out.
You get him out by tomorrow.
- What new partners? - 'You'll meet 'em.'
Is Leonard King in on this?
That's a good guess. He is.
- Well, you can forget it. - You won't go along?
No, I won't won't go along.
[dramatic music]
Mr. Reece would like some more steam
and, uh, would you lock the door?
[music continues]
[dramatic music]
Hey.
Hey, attendant!
[banging on the door]
Attendant!
Evans!
'Evans!'
[coughing]
Evans, let me out of here!
That's enough.
[music continues]
[panting]
Now..
...I'm gonna want you to telephone Roland.
You probably know his number, but if you don't, I have it.
[instrumental music]
She's gone.
[dramatic music]
Gone where?
Mm. Neighbor didn't know.
She called his wife this morning.
Asked her to...kinda keep an eye on the house.
Said she'd contact them again in a couple of weeks.
I haven't got a couple of weeks.
Yeah, I know.
You know, I was thinking maybe she's got an account
in your bank.
Maybe she has.
Is this supposed to have some profound significance
for me or what?
Well..
...she's gonna need cash or something sooner or later.
If you watch out for a check, maybe you can
find out approximately where she is.
You might even find her at the city
or...neighborhood or something.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
It's a good thing the dispatcher caught me
or I would've been in San Francisco.
Hmm.
You heard the referendum failed?
Yeah.
Well, Roland's been fired.
He was paid off and told to leave by tonight.
He's already left as a matter of fact.
He looked, uh, he looked pretty sick.
Apparently, Reece did the firing himself by phone.
Do you know who they're bringing in?
The undertaker.
- Herb Gossett? - Yeah.
Well, well, well..
That means King won't bother to use the business
as a legitimate front. He'll strip it clean.
Figured, didn't it?
How's all this affect your situation?
Well, they haven't fired me yet.
Hang in there.
If you need me, I'll be with Reece in San Francisco.
[dramatic music]
Oh, h-hi. I thought I heard someone at the door.
Me. I was getting the newspaper.
Listen, I have to pick up the kids.
- Would you like to come? - Oh..
Come on, get your coat.
Laverne, are you sure I'm not in the way?
I mean, everything was so sudden
Dave didn't even give you a chance to catch your breath.
Don't be silly. We love having you here.
Well, I ought to do a little shopping.
- How are you fixed for money? - Oh, I'm fine.
I cashed a check at the little corner store this morning.
They wanted to know where I was staying.
I put down this address.
Good, let's get going.
[instrumental music]
You're a very forbearing man, inspector.
The average winner in a game like this
would certainly have said, "I told you so" by now.
Maybe that's because I don't consider it a game.
Well, I don't care anymore.
Russell Clay cared.
They can't be stopped, you know.
- They can be stopped. - I don't think so.
- I've dealt with him now. - So have I.
- On Leonard King's level? - Higher than that.
We've jailed high commissioners.
Of course we don't win every time
but you can't win at all unless you fight, can you?
And you want what from me?
I told you. I want your help.
[telephone buzzing]
Yes?
It's Washington.
- Erskine. - 'Lewis, this is Arthur.'
Yes, Art.
I talked to Tom, he told me you were with Reece.
I hate to interrupt you
but I think this information is worth it.
[Lewis] 'Yes?'
We have the results on the material you sent us.
The typewriter ribbon had a name
an address and part of a letter on it.
It reads, "Faye Simpson.
"3-1-3-1, Davis Drive, Paradise Regained, California.
'"Dearest Faye, I've decided to leave Paradise Regained.'
'"I know how you feel about Dave and you and me'
going to the police, but.."
And that's all there is.
- You say Tom has this? - Yes.
He indicated he thought the woman may be
in some kind of danger.
He and Durant have gone to check out the address.
- Good. Thanks very much, Art. - 'Good luck.'
Talk to you later.
Alright, Mr. Erskine, there are a couple of things
I can tell you. When do we start?
What about right now?
They still have the Simpson woman's home staked out.
But her neighbor seem to think
she'll be away for several more days at least.
What about this Dave that Price mentioned in the letter?
That's probably Dave Butler.
The neighbor says that Butler and Ms. Simpson
are planning to be married.
Does he live at Paradise Regained?
Well, he does right now.
But he said he was selling his house when we located him.
He's with Durant.
I thought you'd probably want to talk to him.
He doesn't know where the Simpson woman is?
He claims he doesn't.
[instrumental music]
I-I don't know anything about that.
Did you know Wendell Price, Mr. Butler?
Yes.
His letter indicated that you, he and Ms. Simpson
were thinking about going to the police.
I don't know anything about a letter.
Did you buy a birthday cake for Russell Clay
on the night he was m*rder*d, Mr. Butler?
- For, uh.. - Russell Clay.
We've talked to the woman at the bakery, Mr. Butler.
Look, there isn't time for this kind of nonsense.
These men are K*llers. You and Ms. Simpson are next.

Oh, what's happening?
It's alright now. We've taken the man in custody.
Thank heavens.
It was a bit close, wasn't it?

Time to keep silence and a time to speak."
