[instrumental music]

- Roger? - No, thanks.

[instrumental music]

May I present, Mr. Roger Vincent?

- Good evening, Mr. Vincent. - Colonel Rudolph Klahr.

Cultural attache and our host.

I, um, decided to meet you personally.

And here, Mr. Vincent..

...so there would be no doubt in your mind

who you're dealing with

and no doubt as to the consequences

in the event if you failed us.

Deliberate pressure, you might say.

You do follow me?

- I'll try to manage. - Good.

The fact is...payment day

has arrived, Mr. Vincent.

I wasn't aware Michael was working for your government.

You now know who Michael is.

Whatever your rationalization was before

you now know why he rescued you

from financial ruin.

Most unfortunate stock speculation.

A speculation he got me into in the first place.

Yes. That's true.

I paid back that obligation. I gave him--

Certain restricted papers from your diplomatic section, yes.

Little, stupid things entirely without consequence.

My friend..

...you can cooperate with us

or you can have your department made of aware of these..

...stupid, little things.

The latter choice of course

would see the end of your career.

And a period in the federal penitentiary.

What is it you want?

That's better.

We require certain details of a document

you have access to, Mr. Vincent.

[instrumental music]

Roger?

You really must learn to relax.

We are a competing government not an enemy.

[instrumental music]

Don't beat yourself, Roger.

Ninety-eight percent of this business

is just a game you know that.

Roger, get well, huh?

- Sure, comin' out of the cold. - That's exactly right.

- Tomorrow. - Right.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

Roger!

- Stay away! - Roger, don't be a fool.

Roger, no.

You know we can talk about this, can we?

- Roger, come. - Get away!

[screams]

[theme music]

[male narrator] The FBI.

A Quinn Martin production.

Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring, Philip Abbott.

William Reynolds.

With guest stars

Diane Baker..

...Linden Chiles..

...Eduard Franz..

...Melissa Murphy.

Tonight's episode, Target Of Interest.

[instrumental music]

When the Washington Police

investigating the death of Roger Vincent

identified him as a career diplomat

with access to highly classified information.

The FBI was immediately alerted.

So he could have been thrown or he could have jumped.

But so far there's no evidence

to indicate one way or the other.

And if our first question is why

and for the moment we disregard his job

then there is no motive for either suicide or m*rder.

What section was he in?

Uh, Middle East, K-Section.

Well, we've had information that Code Green Embassy

was going to recruit some minor official from Section-K.

I doubt if it was m*rder.

Yeah, they're too discreet for that.

You see, Tom, we believe that their

...cultural attache, a Rudolph Klahr

is really a colonel of intelligence..

...resting cozily under the usual umbrella

of diplomatic immunity.

But so far we haven't been able to prove it.

Now this may give us a chance.

Tom, I want a file review on Vincent and uh..

- How many others in Section-K? - Uh, three others.

All of them.

And, uh, whoever is in the line to replace Vincent.

Yes, sir.

[door closes]

They must have had Vincent under a great deal of pressure.

He might have committed suicide just to avoid giving into them.

And if that's true they still haven't got

whatever it is they were after.

Well, this could give us a chance

to step behind that immunity.

Expose Klahr, force his recall.

Who knows if we're successful, he might even defect.

Which would give us a real inside look

at Code Green operations.

You know, Arth, I could step in

as Vincent's replacement.

- Go undercover? - Yeah.

As a man with a distinct flaw.

Someone who'll be vulnerable to them.

Every detail of your identification

would be thoroughly checked out.

We've done it before.

Now, what's the bait?

We haven't got time to build a money trap.

What about a woman?

Well, her identification

would be as thoroughly checked as yours.

Well, I can't say it wouldn't be risky.

But have we got time?

I don't see if we have any choice, Arth.

[instrumental music]

- Hi. - Hi.

[instrumental music]

I read the enchanting story.

- He fell from the roof. - He was a stupid fool.

The thing that irritates me is I could read that in his eyes

but I just didn't..

...put it together fast enough by the time I got to--

He wouldn't have jumped.

It wasn't in him. He, he didn't have the guts.

Sandy, he was a neurotic.

He was just as spooked as some crazy horse.

I don't like it when they make you be the one to do it.

Why you? Why you have to be the k*ller?

Sandy, I did not k*ll him.

'As I was trying to explain to you'

'by the time I got to him he was already standing'

on the edge of the roof.

I tried to stop him and he fell, a railing broke.

You now, Sandy, we're almost out of time ourselves

you know that?

If we muff this, it's gonna be the heads of all of us.

I told you it was a dangerous business.

Now, don't ever, ever say

how you feel about k*lling again

not even to me.

I know, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

[instrumental music]

Who's the lucky successor?

I'm sure that Klahr will let us know.

Necessarily it has to be one of these three people.

But how?

There's not a dent in anyone of them.

It has to be.

Everyone has a weakness.

Alright, Allen, thanks very much.

It was Allen Bennett, San Francisco.

Well, he found the right woman.

- Anna Frehling. - Hmm.

Double agent.

She was with the old SGA section of East Germany..

...with US blessing.

Hmm. "Anna Frehling.

"Ann Addison, Ann Fraser.

"Born, Hamburg, Germany in 1937

"raised in the US and England

"married 1958 to Steven Addison

American, deceased in '61."

The important thing here is she's been living in Paris

the last six months.

She just arrived in Santa Louisa

a little town outside of San Francisco.

What she doing there?

Well, she has an eight year old daughter living there

with her grandfather, uh, John Addison.

'Ann moved in within this week.'

Do the Reds know where she is?

They only know her as Ann Addison.

That's the reason for the Ann Fraser passport.

Well, have we contacted her?

Yes, but, uh, she's been inactive the last 18 months.

She wants to stay that way.

Hmm. So she said no?

I'd like to talk to her myself.

Certainly is a handsome women.

[instrumental music]

Hello, Claudia.

Oh. Ah.

Oh, my.

They're supposed to hang like that.

- The bangs. - I'm sorry.

I keep forgetting, don't I?

Come on.

- Mother? - Yes, darling.

It's alright if I call you mother

when we are alone, isn't it?

It's alright anytime.

I told you I just don't want you to dramatize me.

- I wouldn't. - Oh, yes, you would.

You have a highly active imagination

and I just don't want..

What?

I don't want you to make a story out of me.

And I certainly don't want your friends

eyeing me as a woman of mystery.

You know, I was once your age myself.

And I can see the temptation.

I made up a pretty good story about it in my head.

I'm sure you did.

About why we didn't grow up together. I mean..

I know what you mean.

Well, it is something.

- But, darling, I've told you. - Not everything though.

Well, as soon as I can thoroughly

trust your instincts as a dramatist

I am going to bore you to death

with the most minute details of my life.

Mother, when?

Perhaps in about, um, ten years.

Mother.

[instrumental music]

Come on.

[instrumental music]

Mrs. Addison?

I'm Lewis Erskine.

The second wave, I suppose.

The principal.

I'm the one who needs a fiancee.

Well, you'd save time, Mr. Erskine

if you'd take my word.

I've said no. The answer is no.

I, uh, did think you..

You thought now your organization could call

and I'd rise again.

- The old w*r horse. - Oh, hardly that.

One more battle.

One last assignment and then I'd be left alone.

Well, that was in Bonn one year ago.

That was in Frankfurt 18 months ago.

And that's how it'll be again if I listen to you now.

I don't think so.

For eight years I've done everything I've been asked.

I've let my daughter be raised by other people

while I've lain awake at night..

...waiting for a knock at the door as a result of that one

tiny slip I might've made.

Well, I'm tired.

I'm sick of it, I..

I haven't the stomach for it anymore.

I can understand that.

And I don't think I ever did have.

You're dedicated.

You offered your services to United States

even before your husband was m*rder*d.

For what happened to my parents after the w*r

and my husband..

...I had to fight them.

And now?

Well, thanks, Mrs. Addison.

Most people don't do that much.

[instrumental music]

Mr. Erskine.

I suppose you know that you make feel

very small and selfish.

I guess that's part of your plan.

You're much too wise.

What a beautiful little girl.

Oh, she's a little witch really.

You did say that this would be finish.

One way or another.

In any case, after this you'll be exposed.

And one way or the other means..

...we'll be successful or dead.

Not to put it too melodramatically.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chattering]

Door to the left marked private.

- Edward Franklin? - Yes.

- I'm Lewis Erskine. - How do you do?

Tom Colby.

Well, we're close enough if all they have

is a written description.

The, uh, summary's in here, sir.

Everything pertinent.

And, uh, every personal thing I could think of.

Including the weather last night when you left Paris?

[chuckles] Including even that.

Good.

Good luck, Mr. Franklin.

Thank you, Mr. Franklin.

[instrumental music]

Ed!

Ann! Oh, you look marvelous.

I look affright.

I just got in a couple of hours ago myself.

I tried to get something to eat and it was a big mistake.

[instrumental music]

She is really a stunning girl.

That was her business as a foreign agent, was it not?

It's also my business, but I don't look like that.

Colonel, what is your..

What is your estimate of all of this?

Life is not usually so kind.

These two..

They so perfectly meet the specifications.

It gives me a deep feeling of unease.

That's certainly all we could hope for.

It falls right into our laps.

A man who has

access to information we need.

'The man who is in love with'

and intends to marry

a woman who is a former agent of ours.

One whisper of that

and his career is smoke.

On the other hand, they couldn't possibly

have invented these people, but how..

How could they have tumbled..

There is no tumbling.

It's a matter of hard work.

As it is with us.

I was just going to ask

how they happened to know that we're interested in Section-K?

- Vincent's death. - Exactly.

[telephone buzzing]

Yes, general.

'We're discussing the matter at the moment.'

I'm painfully aware of the date.

Yes.

Frighteningly close.

I..

I do not underestimate the urgency.

General, I'm sure your report to the party

will be a model of objectivity.

Tell me, colonel

how come Paris knows nothing

about the relationship between these two?

[Michael] 'That's understandable.'

We never had any contact with Franklin.

And that woman was only

checked periodically.

Now Vincent's death has made it extremely risky.

And to accept such fortuitous circumstances as this

is even more risky.

Now regardless of the pressures from upstairs

I will not move until I've made every possible test

so start making contacts.

Meanwhile, I'll arrange for Van Ritter

to fly over from Paris tomorrow.

He knows Franklin intimately.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chattering]

- Hi. - Hello.

I'm Sandy Davis, if I've been staring at you, I'm sorry.

But that is just absolutely fantastic.

Oh, that's very kind.

I was sitting over there admiring you

and I just decided to come over here and tell you so.

- Thank you. - This place is new for me.

I had to come in here, I tore my nail.

- That makes me so mad. See? - Yes, see.

Oh, the manicurist, she said that

this place was new for you too.

That you just arrived from Paris.

Yes.

That explains it. The style.

You've been wearing it like that in Paris, right?

I've only been here two years myself.

In America, I mean.

I was so lonely until I met Michael.

Oh, is Michael your husband?

No, not yet.

'But I've got him off balance.'

His business is horses.

He's not really a, a horse breeder, he's..

Well he's a broker I guess.

He's got the nicest little farm

and the most beautiful hunters.

Do you like to ride? Do you-do you like horses?

I'm mad about them.

[instrumental music]

I didn't wanna say anything in front of Ann

but I uh, I think I, uh, I think know a friend of yours.

- Oh, who's that? - Paula Drake.

Paula Drake?

[Michael] 'I ran into her last night.'

'I told her you were coming over this afternoon.'

'We got to talking Paris and the embassy'

'and one thing and another.'

There was another fellow that came up in the conversation.

Buzz Benton.

Oh, yes, the, uh, military attache.

Right.

But you say you don't know Paula Drake.

- Afraid not. - Well, that's strange.

I wonder what she could have been talking about.

I guess, she meant that she knew Buzz Benton.

You know how Paula can scramble a person.

Point is, you see, I don't.

[instrumental music]

- Paula Drake. - That's right.

Paula Drake.

Did they give you any indication where I might have known her?

No, it might have been the embassy in Paris.

Embassy in Paris. Let's see. Paula Drake.

No.

I'm absolutely certain I don't know her.

[sighs] Then it was a test.

Well, they sound like a very professional young couple.

And cool.

Very cool.

And, uh...you know

nothing of their affair, Van Ritter?

In Paris, you understand

we are not occupied with this, Franklin.

And not with Anna Frehling.

The affair they have is entirely possible.

For myself, I could not say yes, I could not say no.

The concierge.

The concierge, a waiter here and there, yes.

But that is so easily arranged.

But you are

on good terms with him?

Intimate.

One would think I would have come across her

but we are searching.

And in the morning, I will see him.

Franklin.

Oh, hold it, would you? Yes.

[female #1] 'A Mr. Van Ritter here to see you, sir.'

'He says he's been referred to you by Mr. Hughes.'

Hughes?

Alright, show him in.

Mr. Franklin will see you now.

[instrumental music]

Oh, please sit down. I'll-I'll just be a minute.

How do you do?

It's very good of you to see me.

Very good.

Yes, I mean, tha-that would be helpful.

Okay.

Now, then, uh, what can I do for you?

Gustaaf.

Van Ritter.

Now, what's this, uh, Van De Mier business?

The girl, it's complete confusion.

Oh, well, that's, a, uh, par for the course.

Oh, what are you doing here in Washington?

Greer, there's a visitor with Franklin.

Van Ritter.

Gustaaf.

Round the clock surveillance.

Alright, switch me over.

Yes, Arthur.

Colby has something new on the Roger-Vincent death.

Yeah, hello, Vincent joined

the Virginia hunt club three months ago.

[Erskine] 'Yes.'

The member who proposed him was Michael Weil.

I see.

So, there's no doubt about it.

He's the go between.

It is Franklin, alright.

Yes. I know. I know.

And yet, I still have that uneasiness.

Excuse me, colonel.

There was a child.

They found the baptism records in Humberg.

'Claudia Ann Addison.'

The age corresponds with the age of the girl

seen with Ann in Switzerland in 1967-68.

She'd now be eight years old.

The suggestion is made that the father may have

taken her with him when he and Ann separated.

- And the grandfather.. - And Addison's home was..

- Santa Louisa in California. - Try it.

- I want her found. - Yes, sir.

[instrumental music]

I'm sorry, I-I must have the wrong party.

[coin clanking]

[dial tone]

[instrumental music]

[dramatic music]

Hey, Anna, I think it's time we went back to work

what do you say?

Does he know?

No, I don't suppose he does, he'd be a fool to bring you

into the country if he did, wouldn't he?

I'm afraid we're gonna have to tell him.

Tell him what?

Certain facts of life, your life.

That's right.

We're calling you back, Ann.

What are you talking about, Michael?

Your code name was Taurus Your control was Klauber.

Your contact was Patrezek.

'I don't think I have to say anymore.'

Are you very much in love with him?

Yes, I suppose you are.

Well, it's all for the best.

Ed.

Ed, can I talk to you a minute?

I'll take it.

Yes, Anna.

Ed.

Michael has...

...just told me he's a foreign agent.

What?

And he's going to ask you something undoubtedly.

And for leverage, he's going to tell you

that I was an east German agent.

Wait a minute, if this is some kind of joke I'm not getting it.

No, it's true I was.

I didn't tell you at first.

Why would I? And then..

When were we first sure we were in love?

'There was no exact moment.'

'There was no exact time for me to tell you.'

I haven't been a, a spy for years.

I thought I was free.

But I didn't want to lose you.

It isn't much of an excuse now, is it?

You really knew my father?

Well, if he was John Addison of the fourth squadron, I did.

'I admired him a lot.'

You did?

How old are you, Claudia?

Eight. Can you come out to see us?

Well, I don't know.

Is your mother home?

Oh, no.

Well, uh, when will she be back?

Oh, I don't know that.

She doesn't live here.

You see she's a woman of mystery.

Edward, why don't you wait

and find out what it is that we want?

And then decide whether or not

it's worth going down with the ship.

As soon as I get back I'm calling the FBI.

I wouldn't do that if I were you.

I have almost a full proof story to explain to them

how I happen to know that Ann was a foreign agent.

And anything that you say is going to sound like

a very lame defense.

I'm just asking you to think it through.

Now if you make an issue out of this

there is no way that you can keep from being scrubbed.

And I can assure you that you're not going to

like what might happen to Ann.

Don't let them.

Don't listen to them.

I don't intend to.

Edward, it's not going to hurt you to find out.

And I think we can show you that it's nothing you can't live with

if you're a reasonably sophisticated man

which I'm sure that you are.

Every man has a right to self-preservation, you know.

- And he also has a right-- - No, Ed.

He also has a right to keep his girlfriend safe.

Well, look why don't we just

take this one step at a time.

Call me when you've had a chance to think it over

will you?

- So.. - I think so.

[car starting]

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

Well, bless your heart.

Michael.

You win.

Hello.

I'm willing to listen.

Well, I think that's very sensible, Edward.

The meeting will have to be with your principal.

I'm not so sure about that.

Then there won't be a meeting.

My only consideration is Ann's safety.

I understand.

And if we do, uh...have an arrangement.

I wanna make sure she won't continue to be a target.

Well, we can make a deal. Don't worry.

[instrumental music]

- Can I fix you a drink? - No thanks.

- Ann? - No. No, thank you.

Good evening.

I'm Rudolph Klahr.

Or perhaps you know me.

No. I can't say I do.

You wanted assurance of our official status.

I'm the cultural attache.

Good evening, Mrs. Addison.

Well, Mr. Franklin, we can be brief.

It's a simple matter really.

We wish to know the position of your government in the event of

let us say a belligerency in the middle east.

'Specifically that area which you'll people designate as'

Section-K.

There is a position paper detailing the response

of your government under various circumstances.

We want a copy of that document.

Look, Klahr, I agreed to listen.

And now you have listened, so you're committed.

What, I-I only said that I..

And Mrs. Addison..

I rely not only on your knowledge

of our idea of discipline.

But I believe, I can more or less ensure

Mr. Franklin's co-operation...and yours.

'We have your daughter in San Francisco'

'under the eyes of our men.'

No.

No! She has no part in this.

- 'Listen to me--' - I won't have them harm her.

Ann! Ann. It's gonna be alright. She won't be hurt.

I promise you.

You, uh..

You will guarantee that?

Of course.

If you ensure us the document.

[dramatic music]

Oh, I understand the problem

but please assure her the child is not in any danger.

I've explained that to her but she wants the girl out of there.

I understand that, Lewis

But if Klahr's men so much as had a hint

the child was being protected by us.

They'd know it was a trap.

Let me talk to Ann.

Ann.

Yes.

Ann..

...Claudia is under round-the-clock surveillance

by our agents.

Now we also know she's being watched by the other side.

We've identified the man.

Look, I want her here safely.

Arthur, it's no use. She wants the girl here.

Alright. Very well.

Lewis, the other problem is

how to get to Klahr himself.

If they make the transfer to Weil as they insist.

I think that's a matter of timing, Arthur.

It'll work if we can take Weil out at

just the right moment.

We seem to be surrounded by "Ifs."

Oh, that's the kind of business we're in, isn't it?

[dramatic music]

[instrumental music]

- Ready? - For hours.

Claudia is very excited at seeing her mother.

Granddad, why can't you tell me where we're going?

- I.. - Shh. It's a secret.

- We better hurry. - Yes.

- I'll take that. - Oh, thank you.

Come on, Claudia.

[dramatic music]

I'll call the embassy.

Klahr must know this immediately.

Eugene Moody.

Yes.

I'm with the FBI. I have a warrant for your arrest.

Arrest?

There must be some mistake.

You're charged with failure to register

as a foreign agent.

[grunts]

[dramatic music]

Hello.

I've only got a moment.

Have you lost your senses?

This phone is safe.

We have to make a change.

The zoo is planned but at 12 o'clock.

They're sending me out of town. It's my only chance.

[instrumental music]

Michael Weil, we're with the FBI.

I have a warrant for your arrest.

Come on.

Charging you with failure to register

as a foreign agent.

You'll have to come with us.

[telephone ringing]

[dramatic music]

- Good morning. - Where's Michael?

Oh, I don't know.

Have you talked to him this morning?

No, I didn't expect to. Why?

Well, he's not at the farm. Any idea?

No.

They're pushing up the time.

We're to meet him at 12.

Locate Van Ritter for me

tell him I want to see him immediately.

[music continues]

Now this should be fine.

He'll try to arrange the transfer

for that area down there but be prepared to move.

There's nothing else for you to do.

He's being sent out of town

it might cause a delay which we cannot accept.

What would you tell them upstairs?

I'll warn Klahr.

I'll tell them everything

if you can't prove to me that Claudia is safe.

I'm not bluffing.

Trust me.

[dramatic music]

[dramatic music]

Come.

[music continues]

[telephone buzzing]

Yes.

When?

For failure to register as an agent?

Yes, I see.

No. The colonel has gone himself.

I will reach him.

[telephone beeping]

Franklin, come on.

What's the matter with here?

No. Not here.

Have I told you I wouldn't go through with this

until I was positive Claudia was safe?

Ann.

[Sandra] 'Franklin!'

Yes, I-I'm coming.

[upbeat music]

[telephone beeping]

[telephone beeping]

Hey, G17739.

This is Van Ritter. Where's the colonel?

[male #1] 'He's just making contact.'

Get to him. Michael has been arrested as an agent.

It is a trap.

[dramatic music]

Quickly.

Quickly.

[music continues]

Satisfied?

For the moment.

Excellency!

- Yes. - 'It's a trap!'

FBI! Drop your g*n!

[dramatic music]

Hold it Klahr!

[upbeat music]

[instrumental music]

We hope your interest in the document

does not mean you believe there will be a..

...belligerency is the word you used.

Would you care to make a statement?

For the moment, no.

Well, in that case. I'll see about turning you over.

Mr. Ward, need we be in such a hurry?

The prospect of my embassy shipping me home

is something I regard with very little enthusiasm.

Are you suggesting asylum, colonel?

Possibly.

I understand that I'd have to agree to certain conditions.

The man for you to see is the undersecretary.

Well, I'll leave the colonel to you, Arthur

if you don't mind.

Not at all.

[male narrator] Colonel Rudolph Klahr

waived immunity as an embassy official

and was granted asylum.

Michael Weil, Sandra Davis, and Eugene Moody

were convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage.

They're serving sentences in a federal penitentiary.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]
