05x22 - Summer Terror

Post by bunniefuu »

[instrumental music]

- Sure look pretty. - Beautiful.

- So, I'm gonna pick you up? - Oh, I have to call the camp.

Oh, there's a phone right over there.

Thank you.

- Have a nice summer. - Bye-bye.

See you on the way back.

[Beau] 'Mary Ann?'

Mary Ann.

Are you Mary Ann Lowe?

Yes, who are you?

If I told you Rip Van Winkle, would you believe it?

[chuckles] You're in the wrong mountains.

Oh..

Now, that's what I get for sleeping through

American Lit.

[both chuckle]

Uh, my name's Beau.

Ms. Kentworth asked me to pick you up.

Oh, she said I was to call her when I arrived.

Oh, you were, but then she found out

I was coming into town to pick up some supplies.

I'm a counselor at Camp Winneneka.

That's the boys camp right next to yours.

Go ahead and call her if you want.

You need some change?

If Ms. Kentworth sent you, I'm sure it's alright.

It is. I'll take your bag.

Car's right over here.

[music continues]

Don't you get any ideas. I saw her first.

Mary Ann, I'd like you to meet a fellow counselor, Drake.

- Hi, Drake. - Mary Ann.

We better hustle on back

before our braves get back on the w*r path again.

[both chuckle]

Uh, Drake, there, is also known as Chief Keeper of the Peace.

And you?

I'm, uh, Chief Flying Eagle.

Just looking for a place to land.

[music continues]

I had no idea the camp was this far from the village.

Oh, it's not much further.

Oh, no, the lake's up that way.

'The camp's right next to the lake.'

No.

[dramatic music]

Relax, Mary Ann.

Ms. Kentworth didn't send you, did she?

[chuckles] Please now, come on, you guys, take me back to the village.

[music continues]

I said, take me back to the village.

Really?

Sit quiet.

Do what we tell ya.

You won't get hurt.

[telephone ringing]

Hello?

[whistles]

Mr. Lowe?

[Lowe] 'Yes.'

We have your daughter.

What?

What is this?

If you ever wanna see her again alive

you'll give us $250,000.

If this is some kind of a joke..

[Drake] 'It's no joke, Mr. Lowe.'

Here, I'll put her on.

Mary Ann.

Daddy?

Mary Ann.

Are you alright?

Yes, but I'm afraid..

[Drake] 'Now, you make that in small bills..'

'...and if you call the police, Mr. Lowe'

'you'll never see her again.'

We'll be in touch.

[music continues]

What is it?

Tonight's episode, "Summer Terror."

[intense music]

On the morning of June 23rd

while on her way to an Adirondack Summer Camp

Mary Ann Lowe

daughter of a wealthy Washington, D.C. businessman

was kidnapped and held for ransom.

Her father, Phillip Lowe

defying the kidnapper's instructions

not to call the police

contacted his good friend, Arthur Ward, of the FBI.

- Hello, Phillip. - Arthur.

- You know Lewis. - Yes.

Any further word from the kidnappers?

Nothing.

Arthur, nothing's gonna happen to Mary Ann

if we do everything he tells us, is it?

Well, we can't be certain, Helen, one way or the other.

Helen didn't want me to call you, Arthur.

Well, I know how you feel

but believe me, I couldn't feel worse

if it had happened to my own daughter.

Lou.

Appointment calendar.

Mary Ann has a habit of writing thing down

so she doesn't forget them.

What's this?

Sheer Delight, that's a b-beauty parlor.

I'll need the full names of all these.

As well as any other people she is in the habit of seeing.

You think that might be important?

I don't know

but it's interesting that they waited to pick her up

in the Adirondacks instead of here in Washington.

Suggests they knew her schedule.

[instrumental music]

[Drake laughing]

Here, you tie her there, huh?

When you come outside, help me unload, huh?

You're gonna keep me blindfolded?

Oh, no, no. We're just playing it safe.

Is that too tight?

Yes.

Is that better?

'You see, it's not a bad place, huh?'

Hey, look, don't be scared.

If everything goes alright, you're not gonna be hurt.

[Drake] 'Beau?'

Beau, look, I gotta tell you, man

you were great, you had me believing you

as some sort of a camp counselor, really.

[chuckling] Well, like you said, it was easy.

I never figured it would be such a snap.

Hey, did you see her face

when you pulled that g*n on her, huh?

Yeah. Hey, man, she is kinda pretty, huh?

Yeah, what difference does that make

whether she is pretty or ugly, huh?

What counts is, we're halfway home now, baby.

- Hey, Drake? - Huh?

Oh, when we score, we won't have to get rid of her, will we?

- Well, look-- - She's only a kid.

Everything's in motion, boy, we can't get off now.

We just gotta ride this thing out to the end.

- Yeah. - Come on.

Is this the latest photograph you have of Mary Ann?

Yes.

But why don't they call?

We expect them to.

Arthur, has there been any progress at all here.

Agents are interviewing the bus driver

and camp personnel.

Phillip, when they do call

I want you to keep them on that phone

as long as you can.

What if Mary Ann is already dead?

Insist on talking to her, Mrs. Lowe.

How I wish to God I'd never let her go to that camp.

No, no, I don't either.

I guess I wouldn't..

Couldn't have done very much about it anyway.

I guess maybe I'm a little selfish

I just hated to let her go.

Mary Ann and her mother had been

talking about taking a trip to Europe

when this...camp thing came up.

She wanted to work with the children.

'Mary Ann's always managed.'

'She's really quite self-sufficient.'

What does a thing like this do to our girl, Arthur?

What kind of scar does it leave?

[instrumental music]

[sighs]

I'm freezing.

Hey, Beau, put some kindle on that fireplace

while I go get some wood.

[coughing]

[coughing]

[dramatic music]

Beau!

'Come on!'

Come on!

- Where is she? - I don't know.

There she is, there she is.

You follow her. Get her off, and we'll cut her off.

Come on.

[music continues]

[music continues]

[screams]

Woo-hoo!

[laughing]

Come on.

Come on.

Come on, come to papa.

'Come on, now, papa's gonna take good care of you.'

'Come on.'

You bad girl, yeah.

'Oh!'

[Drake laughing]

Come on, now, yeah!

Ain't you a sweet little thing?

Yes, yes.

Yeah, you know, Bo's right.

'You are a pretty little thing. Hmm.'

'Yeah, it's a shame.'

Lordy, it's a shame.

Come on.

Daddy Drake and Uncle Beau are gonna take good care of you.

Yeah.

[intense music]

Well, she's resting.

The doctor said she should stay in bed for a while.

You know, I can't believe this is happening to us.

I feel the whole thing is a story somebody told me.

[telephone ringing]

[Phillip] 'Hello?'

- Phillip Lowe? - 'Yes.'

- 'Who is this?' - Do you have the money?

Yes.

Alright.

There's a deserted gas station

on the corner of 71st and Williamsburg.

I, uh..

I-I, I don't think I know where that is.

I'm, I'm sure you can find it, Mr. Lowe.

I-I want you to bring the money there tonight at-at 10 o'clock.

Someone will be waiting for you.

I want to talk to my daughter.

Is she alright?

Yes, she's fine now

but she won't be unless you do as you're told.

'I want to talk to Mary Ann.'

Tonight, Mr. Lowe, at 10 o'clock, and be alone.

'Please.'

Not enough time for a trace.

Oh, what's next?

[exhales]

With your permission we'd like to set up a surveillance

at the ransom site.

They said they'd k*ll Mary Ann

if the police were called in on it.

Of course, the final decision is up to you and Helen.

But our only concern now is the safe return of Mary Ann.

Arthur, I want the FBI to help..

...but what if the person who picks up that ransom sees you?

Warns the others?

Could it happen?

Yes.

It could happen, Mr. Lowe.

'But we'll take every precaution to see that it doesn't.'

I understand your anxiety

but we have had considerable experience in this field.

What do you want us to do?

Go ahead.

Want some coffee?

No, thanks.

Where's your friend?

He's on an errand.

What are you looking at me like that for?

Oh, sorry, didn't mean to stare.

You're scared, aren't you?

Look, I told you, there is nothing to be scared about.

Why are you trying to be so nice to me?

Well, what do you expect me to be? Some kind of a creep?

No.

I mean, it's just like, you act like

this is some kind of a normal everyday occurrence.

'Don't you understand what you're doing?'

Sure, I do.

Drake and I have figured this out to a T.

[chuckles] Including what will happen to you when you're caught.

We're not gonna get caught.

Do you really believe that?

Well, sure I do!

People get caught because they do it again and again.

For me, it's just this once.

And like Drake said, it's gonna be clean.

How can you be so sure?

Cut it out, will you?

I don't want to talk about it anymore.

That, uh, camp you were going to, what's it like?

Why would you care?

Okay, so don't tell me.

It's run by a welfare agency.

Kids are from the ghetto.

Oh, that's real white of you.

It wasn't like that.

I knew a boy who was doing it once.

'Working with the kids, I mean.'

'He got me interested.'

I guess I admired him more than anyone I'd ever met.

Well, anyhow, I got involved with the project

and started liking it.

Never really been good at anything else.

Oh, that, that guy that you admired so much, uh

you, uh, you know, like, going with him?

No, he got married this spring.

[chuckles]

'That's cute.'

[chuckles] A boy won it for me at the school fair.

Oh, he said I'd have good luck

if I kept it with me all the time.

I keep trying to throw it away, but I can't.

I guess I'll go to my grave with it.

- Oh, that's pretty. - Yeah.

Yeah, I'll do that from here.

I guess I'll recover. I don't know.

Oh, he's.. Hello!

Can I help you?

- Are you the owner here? - Yes.

Well, my name is Colby. I'm with FBI.

FBI? Oh, how divine.

May I talk to you for a minute?

Um, yes, come on.

In here.

Yes?

Is Mary Ann Lowe a customer here?

Well, yes, borrowing the black flag of revolution.

Let's see, Mary Ann comes in here every Tuesday.

So she should've been here yesterday.

Yes, Mary Ann Lowe, 2 o'clock.

May I?

Tuesday..

Well, her name isn't down here for next Tuesday.

Why is that?

I don't really know.

Oh, yes, I do.

I-I think I remember her telling the girl who does her hair

that she was gonna go away to the Adirondacks.

- Uh, which girl is that? - Cathy Wheaton.

Is she here now?

No, no, she wanted the day off.

Uh, she said she had some personal things to attend to.

[chuckle] Tell me, Cathy isn't in any trouble, is she?

Well, not that I know of. Why?

Well, I don't like telling stories out of school

you see, it's not my thing.

It's just that, well, some of the girls have been talking

and, and that she's been seeing a lot of this guy

who just got out of prison.

Oh, do you know his name?

Um, yes, uh, it's Drake. Alex Drake.

Alex Drake.

Thank you.

Bye.

Goodbye.

[instrumental music]

Look, Cathy, I just don't understand

what it is you have in common with this guy.

I mean, he's a hood.

Well, isn't he?

Did he or did he not spend time in prison?

Does that make you feel so superior?

Uh, just tell me what it is you see in him, will you?

No. I don't have to justify my feelings.

[scoffs] Oh, I don't know!

He just makes me feel good. That's all.

- And I don't? - Oh!

Look, uh, Cathy, I..

I know that I'm not the most exciting guy in the world.

I mean..

[chuckles] Girls don't exactly throw themselves at my feet.

But..

Cathy..

...I love you.

No, I.. I'm sorry, Jerry.

If, if I had any sense, I'd..

Well, I'd throw myself at your feet.

I've been hurt enough.

[scoffs]

That's the story of my life.

All I know is that if I have to give

one more shampoo, I think I'll go crazy.

You don't know what it's like

to stand on your feet for ten hours a day

and listen to those, those spoiled cows

exchanging diet.

'And talking about the wonder of natural childbirth.'

'I feel so trapped and helpless sometimes'

'that I think I'm just gonna scream my lungs out.'

[telephone rings]

Hello?

Please.

I'll be downstairs, uh, in my room.

Just give the signal and I'll come up.

[Drake] 'Who's that?'

Oh, it's just somebody trying to sell me something.

I got rid of him.

[exhales] Oh!

Well?

I just talked to Lowe and, and told him where to deliver it.

Honey, let's not wait, let's grab the money and run.

[sighs] Baby, look, don't second-guess me.

[chuckles]

Cathy, we got to make sure.

It's, uh, it's just that I miss you so.

[chuckles] Hey, she is very pretty, isn't she?

- Who? - 'Mary Ann.'

Hey, hey..

Hey, don't start pulling that stuff on me, huh?

Look, uh, Cathy, will you just relax?

And everything is gonna be just fine, you'll see.

Do you love me?

You know I do.

Uh, Cathy, I got to cut out now.

Look, I'll, I'll be in touch with you, yeah?

I'll call. Bye-bye.

[instrumental music]

[intense music]

[g*nshots]

I wish he wouldn't have to sh**t that lousy g*n now.

It's driving me crazy.

He seems to have quite a talent.

[chuckles] Yeah, he's so talented he spent six years in prison.

[g*n firing]

You'll have to k*ll me, won't you?

No!

No, that's out.

But I know who you are, I can identify you.

It doesn't make any difference.

We'll be long gone.

'I wish I could believe you.'

[g*n firing]

How well do you know him?

Drake?

We go back long ways together.

We, uh, we were in the same orphanage.

Have you ever been by a pet store

and seen a window full of newborn pups?

Well, let me tell you, I was the runt of the litter.

And no matter how hard I tried

no matter how many times I combed my hair, wash my face

nobody ever adopted me.

'And they line us up in a big room.'

'Drake would always get picked.'

[laughs] But he'd be back before the week was out.

He was a real hard case.

But one time, he didn't come back.

I waited for weeks and weeks.

Until one night

he snuck back into the home after everyone was asleep.

He woke me up, and he said he'd come back for me.

And we've been together ever since.

Except the time he was in jail.

[g*n firing]

You don't even know what I'm talking about.

You think only orphans or the poor ever get lonely?

[laughing]

Oh, come on.

You got money, you got friends.

I never had any brothers or sisters.

'My mother couldn't have any more children after me.'

'Well, I know what it's like to be alone.'

The school I went to was private

my father drove me in the morning

a special bus dropped me off.

While the other kids got off in twos or threes, laughing

I got off alone.

Once I was home, there was always the maid.

She was too busy to play.

Oh, there was a cook. She let me bake brownies.

But...you're good-looking.

Oh, there'll be a lot of guys after you.

You know, if I had money, so that I was in your class

boy I'd be calling you all the time.

[instrumental music]

I think he stopped.

You never did tell me what he was in prison for.

He k*lled someone.

[dramatic music]

Alright, warden, thanks very much.

Drake's 29

he was released two months ago from Dannemora State Prison

where he served six years of a manslaughter charge.

[telephone ringing]

Yes? Just a minute.

It's Colby for you, sir.

Thanks. Yes, Tom.

The dispatcher said you were trying to contact me.

- Any progress? - 'No, not a thing.'

The Wheaton girl hasn't left the apartment.

- No visitors? - 'Nothing.'

Alright, Tom, continue the surveillance

let me know the minute anything happens.

- Blanchard. - Yes, sir.

Bring the rangers up-to-date on Drake.

Concentrate on the areas where Mary Ann Lowe was last seen.

Yes, sir.

[instrumental music]

Well, they're an hour late now.

You still think there's a chance they'll show?

Tom, get me the Cathy Wheaton surveillance.

WF-1 to Unit 3.

[man on radio] 'Unit 3.'

Stand by for Inspector Erskine.

Has he left the apartment?

No, sir.

'Lights went out about ten minutes ago.'

[Lewis on radio] 'Still no visitors?'

No, sir. It's been extremely quiet.

Continue surveillance, WF-1 out.

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

You shouldn't have called the police.

They were watching from the gas station.

No.

'You're playing with your daughter's life, Mr. Lowe.'

- You listen to me! - 'No, no.'

'No, you listen to me.'

Mr. Lowe, we know every move you're making.

Now, now, you better listen to me

'cause you won't have another chance.

Now, did you get the money?

Yes.

Alright, you drop it off

at the Parkwood Shopping Centre

at a Salvation Army bin outside of it.

'This Parkwood Shopping Centre is on Grove'

'that's off of Washington Road.'

'The Salvation Army bin, outside of it.'

You got that?

Yes.

Alright, it's 3 o'clock now

you have it there by this morning at sunup.

Sound like a satellite to you?

Satellite?

Yes, it sometimes happens

that an outsider hears about a kidnapping

and tries to come in on the ransom.

You think that's what's happening now?

I don't think so.

I think the kidnappers are using different people

to try to confuse us.

Could they've seen you at the gas station?

No one even came near the ransom site the entire night.

Phillip, it's quite common for kidnappers

to have two or three dry runs before the actual pick-up.

[instrumental music]

Your old man will pay the money, won't he?

[scoffs] Yeah.

Then there's nothing to worry about.

He'll k*ll me.

No.

Look, you don't know Drake the way I do.

I mean, if it gets right down to it

he'd never do a thing like that.

But he's already k*lled someone.

You told me that.

[instrumental music]

Okay.

I'm gonna get you out of here.

Drake will think we're headed back for town.

I'll try to make it up over the hill.

[car horn blaring]

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

Is everything alright?

Yeah, sure.

[sighs]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

WF-1 to WF-20.

Go ahead, WF-1.

Subject just came out of the parking lot

proceeding north on Grove.

Yes, sir, subject's car just came in the view.

[Lewis on radio] 'Stay well back.'

'If she stops at her apartment, drive on by as prearranged.'

Yes, sir. 20, out

[music continues]

[indistinct chatter on radio]

[instrumental music on radio]

What time is it?

Mm, 7:30.

Why?

Aren't you supposed to call Cathy?

Oh, yeah.

Hey, would you make a call for me, huh?

'Change of scenery might improve your disposition.'

'You know the number, don't you?'

Oh, yeah, yeah.

Now, what she'd been telling you?

'She won't give the police our description?'

Oh, Beau, and you're just dumb enough to believe it.

Go on now. Make a call.

Hey, hey.

Beau.

Bring her back something to drink, will you?

[instrumental music]

[engine starts]

[telephone ringing]

Hello.

[Beau] 'Did you get it?'

Who is this?

It's Beau!

Oh. Where's Drake?

'He's at the cabin.'

Why didn't he call?

Look, I don't know.. Listen, did you get the money?

Yeah.

[sighs]

Well, that's it then.

'We'll see you tomorrow in New York.'

Hey, wh-what's, what's Drake doing at the cabin?

'He's not messing around with that girl, is he?'

'Because if he is..'

[dramatic music]

WF-20 to WF-1 and all units on the special.

[Lewis on radio] 'WF-1, go ahead.'

Subject is leaving residence, has luggage.

[music continues]

Wait a minute.

- Where are you going? - Not now, Jerry.

Is that guy, isn't it?

Just leave me alone, will you?

Look, Jerry, we went out together a couple of times

you don't own me.

Look, Cathy, I don't know what you're mixed up in

but it's all wrong.

Oh, for crying out loud, Jerry!

- No, I'm not gonna let you-- - Oh, no!

No.. Oh! Oh.

[instrumental music]

[indistinct chatter]

[tires screeching]

Alright, let's move back, please, move back.

Move back, please.

I think we better have a little talk, miss.

No, I have to go.

'You can go a little later.'

[music continues]

'Bam!'

- 'You're dead.' - What'd you do that for?

Charging in like a bull moose.

Well, did we get it?

- Yeah, man, we got it. - We got it?

Whoo-hoo! We got it.

[Drake] 'Well, what do say, we pack up and get out of this dump, huh?'

- 'Yeah.' - 'Come on.'

[music continues]

You know, Ms. Wheaton, you have the right to remain silent

and to have an attorney.

I know all that.

I have nothing to hide.

The money was marked, Ms. Wheaton.

[Ward] 'Do you have any idea what kind of trouble you're in?'

Can I have a cigarette, please?

Let me explain something to you.

The fact that you might not have been involved

in the actual kidnapping of Mary Ann Lowe

does not clear you of responsibility.

You could make it a lot easier on yourself

by cooperating with us now.

I don't know anything about any kidnapping.

And I don't know any Mary Ann Lowe.

You've been doing your hair at the Sheer Delight Beauty Salon

'for the last year.'

Where's Drake now?

I don't know.

He's, uh..

He's in a, a cabin somewhere that he rented.

On the way to Blue Lake.

Who'd he rent it from?

A doctor.

What's the doctor's name?

It's...Dr. Withers, I-I think.

Mr. Colby there?

[Tom on phone] 'Yes, Lou?'

Tom, call the resident agent covering Blue Lake.

Tell him we'll be flying out

and to have a helicopter standing by.

We'll radio instructions enroute.

[instrumental music]

- You located the cabin? - Yes, inspector.

There's a Dr. Triber's summer cabin five miles form here

one road in.

[music continues]

Well, there is one more thing to do.

No, man, think it through.

Look, I already have.

Alright.

Um..

I'll do it.

Would you?

Yeah, sure. Why not?

Yeah, why not?

Oh, Beau, you..

No!

[intense music]

[music continues]

[intense music]

Drop it!

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

No. No, she's not.

Well, any moment.

No, I'm sorry, I don't have a statement.

I'm just very grateful to the FBI.

Now, you have no idea the..

Oh, daddy.

Helen!

'Someone's here to see you.'

[music continues]

- Mom. - Oh, Mary Ann.

How are you? You alright?

- Officer. - Sure.

Inspector. Thank you.

[male narrator] Alex Drake, Beau Thomas Manley and Cathy Wheaton

were tried and convicted in federal court of extortion.

They were sentenced to terms in the federal penitentiary.

[music continues]

[theme music]
