[intense music]
Operator, I want the police.
The-the police, yes. This is an emergency.
Hello.
I want to report a b*mb.
Yes, a b*mb. Now, listen.
It's going to be planted in the new Federal Building Annex
at 9 o'clock, and it's supposed to go off at midnight tonight.
What?
[music continues]
And you should have soldered that end.
Next time.
[siren wailing]
Forget the sirens.
Yeah, they're just passing.
[siren wailing]
Come on, let's go.
- Eric, we can't wait. - Just a few seconds.
Eric, they're right outside.
- And set the timer. - It's stuck.
- Oh! - Okay.
- Hold that wire. - Let's go.
Come on. Some other time, huh.
[dramatic music]
[siren wailing]
[expl*si*n]
[theme music]
[male narrator] "The FBI.."
A Quinn Martin Production.
Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr..
Also starring Philip Abbott..
William Reynolds..
With guest stars, Wayne Maunder..
Diana Ewing..
Mark Jenkins..
...and Geoffrey Deuel as Eric Stone.
Tonight's episode, "Time b*mb."
On the night of October 13th
the Los Angeles Police Department
received an anonymous call
indicating that a time b*mb would be placed
in the Federal Building Annex.
Police, fire and disaster units
were immediately dispatched to the area
arriving just before the b*mb exploded.
One person, a building guard was seriously injured.
Since the expl*si*n destroyed government property
the FBI began an immediate investigation.
We haven't got much to go on.
The lab's only been at it a few hours.
How much dynamite was used?
Six sticks. Possibly eight.
- Available to anyone. - I'm afraid so.
Anything else?
The lab found bits of alligator skin
and pieces of metal linked chain.
Possibly from a woman's purse.
Big enough to hold a b*mb?
They think so.
- Who tipped the police? - Oh, the usual. Anonymous.
Male, female?
Sergeant on duty said it was a male voice.
He said he had the impression the caller was young
and very excited.
This is the note the police found after the bombing.
The original's on ordinary, letter sized paper
available almost anywhere.
[sighs] Obviously they tried to warn the guard.
But the b*mb went off four hours earlier.
The lab said it was a very crude device.
Timing mechanism was completely destroyed
'so we don't know whether they set it wrong'
'or decided to move it up themselves.'
"Let him that thinketh he standeth
"take heed lest he fall.
"Listen to us
our cause will explode again unless you do."
That Bible quote suggest anything?
I doubt it. Everybody quotes the Bible.
[scoffs]
Well, I want you and Tom to get out to the scene.
I'll call Bryan Durant, tell him you're on the way.
[dramatic music]
[sighs] Sorry, I'm late.
I don't mind the speeding tickets so much
but when the pig ordains that ten minutes of my life
'have to be given up to his lecture.'
That's too much.
You shouldn't get tickets.
I know, I know.
It's now a matter of official record.
'That Karen Wandermere was in her car heading east'
'on such and such a road at such and such a time--'
I said I'm sorry.
Caution!
In everything we do and every move we make.
No waves, no banners, no nothing.
We're in it now. All of us.
And there's all sorts of very clever people looking for us.
Let's not make it easy for 'em.
Did you have your car radio on, Karen?
Oh, you mean about the anonymous caller who'd done us in?
Yes, I heard that, Knox.
Well, we've been kicking it around.
We're the only four who knew anything about it.
Somebody had to know.
Then why haven't we been picked up?
It's a good question.
Karen?
Well, uh..
...maybe somebody knew about the bombing
but didn't know who, who would do it.
That doesn't wash, sweetheart.
Gil's right. The tipster had to know us first.
That's how he learned about the bombing.
But who?
Somebody who wanted to stop the bombing
but didn't want us caught.
Well, that's academic, Eric.
I mean, that could apply to my Great Aunt Mabel.
Sure, if you told her it could.
Oh, yeah. I talk in my sleep. I talk in my sleep.
[chuckles]
Eric, we're not about to betray ourselves
our convictions, our dedication.
Well, you know what I mean.
Maybe I just don't know you.
[scoffs] Or any of you for that matter.
Six months ago I didn't.
And then I met Knox.
'And we shared a philosophy.'
'And then you came along, a friend of Knox's.'
'And Gil.'
Where's this getting us?
One of us tipped. No other way.
Motion carried.
Alright.
Now, let's get on with it and just think.
Some, some unintentional remark
like a...a stranger making it a point to get to know us.
Now, let's just walk it around for a while.
Gil.
I talk to you guys.
No one else.
When you bought the dynamite?
That was a 100 miles away.
No questions.
No nothing.
Karen, what about Alan?
Alan and I don't talk about this.
He knew what we were planning before he quit.
But he didn't know where. Or when.
Don't worry, Knox baby. You're on the agenda.
Alright, go on.
That's nothing really.
We had it out the night he left the group.
Big, ugly scene with everything but Wagner on the stereo.
Alan wanted me to quit, and I wanted him back in with us.
He was a standoff.
We agreed that the two of us might make it
if we didn't talk about the cause.
And we don't.
Never. Not a word.
A pretty lady grooves on your kid brother
and you share a pad with him.
So?
So maybe you told him something.
Figured you could trust Alan, you know, your own brother.
Sorry, but we're running a little late, folks.
- 'Good answer, Knox.' - Oh, come on, Eric!
Suppose I did talk to him about our plans which I didn't..
...Karen's his girl, I'm his brother!
Do you think he wants to send us to a penitentiary?
I mean, man, your card is punched, folded, mutilated
and spindled if you think Alan's the one.
Bravo. Encore, encore.
Alright.
Oh, here's what we have to do.
[intense music]
For the next few days
each one of us has to go back over the last weeks
'and remember every single thing he's done and said.'
'Everybody he's seen, all the phone calls, anything.'
'Until one of us comes up with something.'
And, Gil, you're in charge.
Check us out. Me too.
And get results.
[intense music]
We have several suspects
who belong to subversive militant groups
but we haven't come up with anything yet.
Any particular group that, uh, stands out over the others?
Yes, but to the best of our knowledge
they have never resorted to bombing.
'not until now at least.'
The note said, "Listen to us.."
Use of the word "Us" could be a deliberate attempt
to throw us off the track. It still might be a lone b*mber.
[telephone buzzes]
It's probably your call.
Yes.
Oh, put him on please. It's Mr. Ward.
Arthur.
Uh, Lewis, I'm in the lab.
They've got a few things working for us.
First of all, they confirmed that the b*mb
was built into a purse.
Retail value over a $100. Top grade alligator.
Do you have the manufacturer of the purse?
Yes, and the name of the only retail outlet
in the Los Angeles area.
A Winthrop Bells department store.
- Winthrop Bells? - Hmm.
Right.
Traces of face powder were found on the purse fragments.
The lab wasn't able to identify the manufacturer
but they found that the powder
had a distinctive blend in color.
Of course it could have been special ordered.
Mm-hmm.
The lab report is on its way to you.
Anything on the workings of the b*mb?
Yes, a heavy gauge nylon line.
Type used in deep sea fishing.
And this last item backs that up.
They found bits of fiber glass casing.
Kind used to waterproof batteries used in skin diving
underwater photography, things of that sort.
Alright, Arthur, thank you.
- Then it was a purse? - And expensive.
Are we anywhere near Winthrop Bells?
Nine, ten blocks west of here, on Seventh.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[door opens]
Now, let's see if I can guess.
You've just won an all-expense paid tour
to romantic Bora Bora.
Nothing, huh?
Not even 25 words or less?
[Alan] 'I thought I'd try it on my own.'
Then you haven't checked the cost of living lately, my boy.
I'll be 21 in a couple of months.
I'll get my share of dad's insurance money.
Uh, you heard about that bombing?
I said, have you heard about that bombing?
I heard about it three months ago, didn't I?
You...you don't think we did that?
- Don't con me, Knox. - Oh, wow, Alan!
You are wig, man, if you think we did that.
There were people in that building.
Whose idea was that?
Eric's?
We're not out to k*ll anybody.
Oh, that's really very interesting to hear
because you sure almost did k*ll someone.
Hey, man, that was an acc..
Accident.
Now, that's straight, baby brother.
That was an accident.
If you don't believe me, you just ask Karen.
Knox, listen to me, will you?
Eric and Gil, those clowns
are gonna drag you so far down with them
and you're never gonna get up again.
Harken, folks, it's Yale psychology major
bang, bang, strikes again.
You know I'm right.
I know that you're all hemmed in by textbooks
blinded by final exams.
Look around you, Alan, today, we are being sold out
as human beings.
And bombing buildings is gonna change that?
It's a beginning.
We're gonna change a lot of things.
To what?
I mean, come on, tell me, to what?
Tell me what I've to look forward to after all these
uh, changes take place?
Eric in the White House? Or does that get blown up too?
[chuckles]
Knox, you know I want change too.
I even followed you into that group.
And I listened to that extremist garbage.
'You wanna know what Eric's gonna change?'
'Eric is gonna change your name into a number'
if he doesn't accidently blow you up first.
I mean, come on, Knox, please..
[intense music]
You made that call.
You made that call!
You made that call. You made that call.
What's the matter? You're having fun, huh?
Aren't you gettin' enough kicks out of plain ol' bombing?
You made that call? You called the law?
To save your neck and Karen's.
Well, little brother Alan, you almost got us blown to bits.
Let alone caught.
It didn't occur to me that you guys
had moved the schedule up.
How did you know? How did you know about any of it?
- Karen? - No. Nobody told me.
You were on the phone late one night.
You thought I was asleep. I overheard you.
[dramatic music]
Oh, Alan. Oh.
Oh, wow.
You dumb, dumb little kid.
See, I figured that if the cops were already there
when you guys came that you'd be scared off.
Well, Brother Alan, you better just keep packing your bags
and start running.
Come with me, oh, come on, Knox
it's one thing to, to, you know, to do something
that you believe in, but, man, if it's..
It's stupid to get your head blown off for no reason at all.
You don't understand.
We'll just cut out, man. Anywhere.
You don't understand. I believe in what I'm doing.
You don't know what you're doing?
Well, man..
...I know that you better get as far away as you can
and as fast as you can.
Don't take your car because Gil will probably
'have his stooge watching it.'
Gil?
Will you listen to me and shut up?
Man, what have you done?
Now you stay away from family.
Don't even tell me where you're going.
I'll try to cover for you if I can. Somehow.
Alan...please don't take any chances..
...because Eric's very thorough.
- He scares you? - Yeah.
Yeah, he scares me.
And Gil...he scares me too..
...and anybody else who figures on k*lling my brother.
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
- Ms. Chatfield? - Yes.
I'm Inspector Erskine, FBI. This is Mr. Colby.
How may I help you?
Trendsetter Handbags manufactures an alligator purse
I believe the model number is J-400?
Yes, I know it well. It's the top of our line.
Oh, we understand this is the only store
in the Los Angeles area that carries that particular model.
It is. We carry an exclusive.
Ms. Chatfield, we'd appreciate it if you'd go through
your records and give us a list of the people
who have brought that purse.
Inspector, this department sells
an average of 300 handbags a month.
Nearly 4000 last year alone.
Uh, if you make those records available
I'll have agents review them.
Very well. I'll call.
I'm hoping we can find one name on both lists.
Someone who bought the face powder and the purse.
[instrumental music]
Karen.
Karen!
[music continues]
Where have you been? I've been so worried.
How did you get on board without my seeing you?
You had your nose in that book.
Again.
- What? - Kiss me.
Why didn't you telephone?
I know. I know..
[chuckles]
Look at you.
Your clothes look like you've been sleeping in them.
Alan..
- Eric thinks you betrayed us. - Karen, listen to me. Please.
- I want you to come with me. - Where?
Uh, somewhere. It doesn't matter.
Just come with me.
Oh..
We've been through this before.
But I'm leaving.
Now, being together, you and I, that stops.
Unless you come with me.
But I can't just run out on your brother and Eric and Gil.
Oh, darling, don't you understand?
I've got my life all planned out.
I know what I want to do.
I don't want to be just another housewifey-housewife.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you want to, uh
clear the air, reform society, change the country
and forgetting what you ordered.
Well, I'm going to try.
I'm giving myself everything I am to what I believe in.
[laughs] Oh, yes, ma'am.
Karen, the martyr.
Get your tickets, ladies and gentlemen.
See the little lady sacrifice herself
right before your very eyes.
Oh, shut up.
Karen, stop kidding yourself.
This yacht ain't exactly a ghetto area.
- It's rent-free. - Not to your parents.
Well, what did you want me to do, Alan?
Set up a tent in the middle of Main Street?
I couldn't live in home, I had to stay someplace.
Then try me, honey.
The paper said that if had it been five seconds sooner
then that maintenance worker would have been blown to bits.
Is that what you want?
'Cause the only kind of change you're ever gonna get
with a b*mb is that kind.
[intense music]
Well..
Yeah, so you know.
I'm the rat. I'm the one who tipped the cops.
Karen...it's not what you think.
You don't have to explain.
Just because I love you doesn't give me the right to judge you.
but that works both ways.
We both lose.
Each other?
Well, maybe...maybe.
I don't know yet.
So..
Next stop nowhere.
- Oh, Gil's after you. - I know.
Well, he's already been here and he's talked to me
and I don't think he'll be back.
'Maybe this will be the safest place for you.'
Yeah.
Okay, captain.
'Pipe me aboard.'
- Then you'll stay? - 'Aye, aye, captain.'
Things will work out.
Never.
[instrumental music]
Mrs. Roderick Leonard. Mrs. Anna Wandermere.
Jean Nelson.
Got it, Harry?
Good. Thank you.
Only these six women brought that
particular blend of face powder.
Well, there's no Mrs. Roderick Leonard here.
Nor here. What's the next name on those?
Wandermere. Mrs. Anna.
[intense music]
- No. - Here it is.
We have a match.
Anna Wandermere.
One of the city's first families.
Have the biggest estate out in Cedarhurst.
Anna Wandermere is hardly what we're looking for.
We'll see.
[music continues]
Nobody's come up with anything.
Nothing around you has changed.
Friends, family, milkman, bank teller, waitress
all act just the same, huh?
Nothing that could point to our traitor.
Is that what you're telling me?
Eric, maybe it was a one in a million shot.
[chuckles]
Bad odds.
Hey, there's always some crank calling up
claiming he left a b*mb somewhere.
Long shots, they come in.
It's good thinking, Knox.
Thanks, Karen.
Feels better now.
I think it's worth that consideration.
Sure, like believe it or not. Stranger than fiction.
That kind of coincidence.
They happen.
They happen. You hear them, Gil?
Yeah, I got 20/20 hearing.
Karen.
I think we should accept his explanation
because if we can't trust each other
then we are going nowhere, brothers.
Alright. Let's close the book.
There's no traitor..
...no Judas.
Just one great big coincidence.
- Right, Knox? - Yeah, yeah.
Just like that other coincidence?
Your brother left town the day after the bombing?
You didn't mention that, Knox baby.
I mean, that's worth a headline to us any day of the week
but you didn't even think to tell us.
Now why? Because you knew your brother had tipped.
No, man, nothing like that.
Now we've been bugged with each other lately, that's all.
He's been talking about leaving.
He left when he did, and I didn't mention it.
'I didn't mention it because I knew what you'd think'
exactly what you're thinking.
Alan, wouldn't cop out on us.
Alright.
So much for old business.
Hey, now, wait a minute, man.
Is that it? About Alan?
Oh, Gil's in charge of such things.
Well, don't we get a vote?
Or are we forgetting what we are supposed to be for?
Marshal law, cutie.
Marshal law.
Now, then..
There wasn't a word about the bombing in today's paper.
'And by tomorrow it's gonna be all forgotten.'
'So we're gonna advance the schedule.'
Another bombing?
So soon?
There's been too much complacency.
The people don't really believe
that revolution's already started.
Now we've gotta convince them.
We gotta draw the line straight and clear
so that everybody will know which side they wanna stand on.
[chuckles] We gotta, we gotta do something to finally get it on.
So from now on, no warnings
and when the blast comes, the buildings won't be empty.
If it's a revolution, then let's have a little dying.
[intense music]
[instrumental music]
I must say you don't look like the pest control man.
I beg your pardon?
But the termites won't know that now, will they?
Oh, Mrs. Wandermere, we're with the FBI.
I'm Inspector Erskine, and this is Mr. Colby.
Mrs. Wandermere.
The library's in here.
Thank you.
Mrs. Wanderemere, did you buy an alligator purse
from Winthrop Bells?
Of course, I did.
Nobody would ask such a question without knowing the answer.
May we see it, please?
I decided I didn't like it and I gave it to..
...to my granddaughter.
W-where can we reach her?
I don't know. She left this house four months ago.
Do her parents live here?
Yes, but they are in Europe now.
Trying to forget..
...about..
The problem is that Karen is 20.
She's very aware of a-all the national illness
that have to be treated.
Nobody but a fool would deny that they exist.
Karen wanted to make her feelings known.
Of course, the Wandermeres are revolutionaries.
Pardon?
But that was in 1776.
Do you, um, hear from your granddaughter?
No. She dropped out of college, I know that much.
Have you tried to find her?
We've tried.
What about her friends?
Well, the old friends she doesn't see
and the new friends I've never seen.
I've almost been afraid to ask you.
What is it that Karen has done that would involve the FBI?
I'm sorry, Mrs. Wandermere
I'm not in a position to say just now
but her name has come up in one of our investigations.
All the signs were there.
Karen is too emotionally involved. Change she wanted.
Wipe the state clean.
And when I'd ask her what she'd substitute
she would run out of words.
Impetuous, naive.
Oh, but Karen is a good girl, inspector.
Wisdom, judgment, that will come in time when she's all grown up.
[dramatic music]
Marine boat registry please.
She was a senior in Harris Canfield College.
We'll need a list of her friends.
- So start interviewing them. - Right.
And let's find out if she lived in a dormitory or off campus.
The nylon fishing line and plastic fragments
found by the lab might tie in with the boat.
They found it.
It's down at the New Marina.
The Wandermere's boat's name is Sylva the II.
[intense music]
There's no point in blaming yourself.
[sighs]
I think I am so clever.
You saw what Eric was after only two meetings.
I had to wait until I actually heard him announce
we were all gonna become murderers.
- What are you going to do? - I don't know.
If I get the law to stop, then I condemn myself
and your brother and maybe even you.
Oh, I don't want to go to jail
but I don't want anybody to die either.
[dramatic music]
I'll go get some more coffee. Maybe that will help.
If you lace it with Hemlock.
I have to make a decision.
Soon.
[music continues]
Don't move. Don't look at me.
There are two men coming.
Now, nice and cool, hon. Could be the law.
[music continues]
[music continues]
- Ms. Wandermere? - That's right.
I'm Inspector Erskine. Mr. Colby.
- We're with the FBI. - Oh.
Well, I'm sorry, fellas, I've given up dating for Lent.
Of course you realize you have the right to remain silent?
[chuckles] Well, I have nothing to hide. What do you want?
It's about your alligator purse.
Oh. You found it?
Well, you see I lost it several months ago.
Uh, can I have it back?
Well, I don't think you'd want it now.
Why?
It was blown to pieces in the bombing
of the Federal Building the other day.
Oh! That's too bad.
Is this your permanent residence now, Ms. Wandermere?
[sighs]
Are you, uh, staying here alone?
Well, inspector, In spite of all
I really don't have to answer anything.
Bye now.
[instrumental music]
Now, you noticed the two plates?
It's quite an appetite for a little girl.
And that leather jacket
at least four sizes too big for her.
Uh, someone left in a hurry.
Yeah, set up a surveillance right away.
[music continues]
Okay.
Thanks.
- I found him. - Where?
A bar near the Marina. Tony just called.
- Who? - Just a guy.
Owes me a favor.
Tony doesn't know anything.
You know what to do.
[music continues]
Easy, Knox, I had to do it.
'Suppose the FBI turns up Alan.'
Supposes he talks..
We'd all be dead.
All of us.
Right, Knox?
Now, don't argue with me, Karen
get the car and meet me here, now!
This stuff oughta fit you, Alan.
- Oh! - You can change in the back.
Thanks a lot, man. I'll get the stuff back to you, Tony.
[instrumental music]
This is LA-23 to LA-7
Go ahead.
'Subject has just gotten into her car'
'and is pulling out of the parking lot.'
[tires screeching]
Hey, Tony, when Karen comes, would you tell her I'll be..
Where you've been hiding, kid?
[music continues]
[tires screeching]
[tires screeching]
Ah!
Please, please help him, he's over there
he'll k*ll Alan.
Stay with her.
[music continues]
FBI!
I'll call an ambulance.
Ms. Wandermere, we're gonna want some answers now.
I'm afraid it might be too late.
Where is the b*mb?
It's somewhere in the federal court building.
What time is it set to go off?
- Where they gonna put it? - That's just it, I don't know.
- 'We got less than an hour.' - I don't know.
It could be anywhere in the federal court building
all I know is it's supposed to k*ll people
maybe a lot of them.
[indistinct chatter]
We need extra police
and the b*mb disposal squad immediately.
[Alan] 'You've got no way of knowing who they are.'
You better let me go on with you. I can point them out.
There are innocent people in there.
You've got less than 30 minutes.
I'm telling you, you'll never spot them.
Please..
'For once listen to us.'
Alright. You are going with us.
It's all set. Let's get it on.
Did you actually see the defendant
drive his car to the front of the garage
park it there, and then open the door--
I object, Your Honor, defense is leading the witness.
Sustained, Mr. Harper.
'Defense will refrain'
'from not only leading this witness'
'but will avoid this whole line of questioning.'
[male #1] 'Your Honor, if I may approach the bench'
'I think I can explain the relevancy of this question.'
[male #2] 'Alright, I'll hear both councils.'
- Eric, let's get out of here. - In a minute.
- We got about eight minutes. - We only need two.
[tires screeching]
Lou, this is Jim Clayton
the building guard, he knows his way around here.
- Good, stay with us. - Yes, sir.
I have agents and police searching the building now.
Seven minutes.
Is there any section of the building
he particularly wanna b*mb?
- All of it. - 'No. Justice.'
My brother was always ranting about Justice.
We'll start with court rooms.
Stay with the girl.
[music continues]
You still haven't answered the question, Mr. Pears
so I'm going to repeat it.
Did you actually see the defendant
drive his car to the front of the garage--
Sorry, Mr. Harper.
Ladies and gentlemen, we must clear this court room
at once.
Court recessed until tomorrow.
Uh, bailiffs, clear the court room.
[indistinct chatter]
Court rooms are on this floor.
- How many? - Six.
Alright, let's go, man.
- Let's go. - There won't be anybody here.
The b*mb will go off and nobody here.
Hey, man, we got less than four minutes
can you dig it?
No, we can't fail the second time.
Man, it's no failure.
That thing will wipe out this whole floor.
- Let's go. - No.
- Leave it. - No.
Okay.
We'll leave it in the lobby.
There'll still be people there.
We're gonna shove this whole power structure
right up against the wall, Knox baby.
The system's gonna bleed
and the establishment's gonna listen.
[indistinct chatter]
b*mb disposal unit has just arrived.
That briefcase, the b*mb!
'That's him!'
[instrumental music]
[indistinct chatter]
What else is down here?
Uh, the underground parking
and the air conditioning unit.
- Where's that? - This way, sir.
Come on! We got a little more than a minute.
Give me that!
Will you come on?
Let's go.
- Don't move! - Go!
Get to the wall!
Where is it?
Find it.
Oh, come on, man!
- We're too close! - You shut up!
You shut up! You're crazy! Time's running out.
It's right over there, it's stuck behind the water cooler.
[intense music]
- Tom, get out of here. - No chance.
[indistinct chatter]
Step aside, please.
Move back.
Step aside.
Alright, back up there.
[music continues]
Move back.
Step aside. Move back.
Move back, please.
[music continues]
Hit the deck.
[explosions]
