[instrumental music]

Willard, do you read?

Yeah, I read, go ahead.

We're coming up on a border patrol checkpoint.

Looks like two inspectors.

'Lie back and cover us.'

Right.

Good morning. Could I see your driver's license?

Oh, sure.

- 'Where'd you come from?' - Uh, Tucson.

Visiting relatives.

On our way back to Los Angeles.

Could you get out and open the rear of the truck, please?

Hold it! Hands up.

Both of you.

Over there.

That looks like heroin, alright? Cuff them.

[g*nshots]

They got hit. What do we do with them though?

Put them in the trunk.

We'll figure it out later. Come on, hurry up.

Come on.

Tonight's episode, Antennae Of Death.

At 3:00 pm on June 17

the Phoenix office of the FBI received a call

from the US Border Patrol office at Casa Grande.

The two missing patrol inspectors

assigned to a traffic check operations

near the Arizona-Mexican border

have been found alive but in critical condition.

The FBI began an immediate investigation.

Even as the wounded officers were being rushed to a hospital

a description of two of the subjects

supplied by the inspectors plus latent fingerprints

obtained from the patrol vehicle

were forwarded to the FBI Identification Division

in Washington

The results were immediately teletyped

to Inspector Lewis Erskine in the Phoenix office.

[Lewis] '"Latent Fingerprint section, Identification Division '

'"reports impressions developed on border patrol vehicle.'

"Identical fingerprint record Arthur Lawrence Majors

"FBI number 537567H.

"Majors' currently subject of unlawful flight

"m*rder investigation, Kansas City

designated office of origin."

Here's the identification order on Majors.

[telephone buzzes]

Yes.

Mr. Ward.

Yes, Arth?

[Arthur over phone] 'Lewis, you have the teletype on Majors?'

Yes.

Well, I have some additional information

from a highly placed informant in Kansas City.

He says Majors is tied in with narcotics.

'It's a network between Kansas City and Los Angeles.'

How are the two patrol officers doing?

Well, they're still in serious condition.

Were they able to give you any further description

of the other two suspects?

No, they didn't get a good look at them.

Well, we weren't able to come up with anything

on their description of the man with Majors.

It was too general.

This operation is reported to have its headquarters

in Los Angeles, so you'd better get up there.

Right. I'll contact you when we arrive.

'Alright, Lewis.'

Why?

What else could I do?

I see.

'Do you know who you're working for?'

- You know we have rules. - Yeah.

One of them regards violence.

We don't use it unless we're ordered.

Do you understand?

I'm, uh, I'm taking you out of circulation for a while.

You see Channer the first thing tomorrow.

What am I gonna do?

Anything he tells you.

You live with it

till I think you're ready for another assignment.

Now get out of here.

Majors, I got a report

that you might be sampling the heroin.

- True? - You wanna look for marks?

No, I'll take your word for it this time.

Just be careful.

If I ever find out you're hooked..

...we'll bury you.

Well, what happened?

We just resigned.

What are you talking about?

Kirby, what happens to the junk after we deliver it?

It goes out to the pushers. They pay for their supplies.

So a distributer would rake in quite lot of dough in one day.

Artie, you're not thinking of holding up a bagman.

If we connect it at the right time, we could land..

...a hundred grand or so.

Or a b*llet through the head.

I don't want any part of this.

[Majors] 'What about you two?'

Well, um..

- We're with you, Artie. - Yeah, sure, no sweat.

I'll drop you at the next bus stop.

[laughter]

Um, Robert, uh, these men are from the FBI.

Uh, Inspector Erskine, Agent Colby.

- They, uh, they wanna ask-- - Is something the matter?

Yes, Robert, I'm afraid so.

'We wanna talk to you about the Ornello pawnshop'

'on East 6th street.'

You sold them a .38 caliber revolver two days ago.

We want to inform you of your rights.

You don't have to say anything

and you can call a lawyer if you wish.

Oh, talk with them, Robbie.

Of course, I'll talk with them, mom.

Why, it's crazy. I've never owned a g*n in my life.

That's just the point. You didn't own it.

'It belongs to a US border patrolman'

'who is lying in a Phoenix hospital critically wounded.'

Where did you get the g*n, Robert?

- Jarret. - Mr. Jarret?

Uh..

He rented a room here.

Well, he used to. He, he left this morning.

- Can I have his full name? - Uh, Kirby Jarret.

Uh, at least that was the name he gave me.

[Robert] 'Uh, he had the g*n in his room.'

Uh, I stole it with some other stuff.

'I, I needed the money bad.'

Robert, let me see your arm.

Oh.

Jarret put me on it two months ago.

He turned me on to the junkie who pushes at school.

The price got so high.

'I-I didn't know what to do.'

'So I went, went back to Jarret..'

...and..

...he just laughed in my face..

...and said..

"N-no credit, junkie."

So I stole from him.

I, I took the g*n.

Maybe I should have put it to my head.

Oh.

Robert, did you see this Jarret leave?

'Yeah.'

Did you notice what kind of a car he was driving?

Yes.

He was with, with a woman..

...and I heard..

...I heard him talking

about where they were going to go.

If you give me a minute, I can, I can tell you.

Mrs. Loper, this boy needs medical attention.

I'd like to get him to a hospital.

- Yes. - Come along, Robert.

- Please help him. - You can tell us on the way.

It looks like the car that Robert described.

Would you step outside, please, and open your trunk?

[g*nsh*t]

[grunts]

FBI, Jarret, you're under arrest.

Alright then. I'll call you tomorrow.

My neighbor.

[laughs] She saw you coming

and just had to know everything about you.

Why didn't you tell her?

Strange.

I couldn't even if I wanted to.

I still hardly know you.

You're just a man who one day helped a poor stranded woman

with a flat tire and came home to dinner.

Seems like a long time ago.

Yes.

And I don't know anymore about you now than I did then.

What's to know?

I'm just a, a salesman

who likes a good home-cooked meal every now and then

when he's in town in the company of a wonderful person.

[doors shuts]

Guess who that is.

- Well, hello. - Hi.

- When did you get in? - This morning.

I'll be here the weekend.

You're late. We just finished.

That's alright. I'll just have some coffee.

- Want some? - Yeah.

Let me see your hand.

Harvey Allers, campus intellectual.

Uh, didn't you say he was engaged to someone else?

He was.

[female #1] 'Shelly.'

You're not going to get married

until you finish school. You said--

Oh, don't be ridiculous, mother.

It was just an experiment.

Now that I've got him, I'm not interested.

She can have him back.

You can't experiment with people's lives.

I find it very exciting.

Are you two going out?

Yeah, we're gonna go to a movie. You wanna come?

Homework.

Oh, why don't you go and get ready?

I can handle the dishes.

- I'll just be a few minutes. - Sure.

Something?

Curious.

What do you see in her?

Dear old solid mom.

I adore her dearly, but I thought

you'd be looking for some more action.

More than just a kitchen and home cooking.

Well, maybe I like a kitchen.

And a, a home.

You've got a wife somewhere, haven't you?

Yeah.

And eight kids.

Well, you don't have to joke about it. That's alright.

I like people who break the rules.

It's interesting.

Do you find me interesting or, uh, do you ever think about me?

- Sometimes. - I'm flattered.

- Don't be. - I know.

I'm selfish and arrogant and self-centered and..

Well, I don't mean to hurt other people's feelings.

It's their own fault. They leave themselves open.

I'll wash, you dry.

I wanna confess something. Uh..

I think a lot about you and me. I don't know why?

I don't even understand my own feelings toward you.

Maybe it's.. I'm a father to you.

Well, that maybe a part of it--

Let's leave it at that.

Okay.

- But just promise me one thing. - Yeah.

Someday let's have a real adventure.

Something really wild.

It doesn't have to be romantic.

I just wanna see life from your point of view.

You may not like the view.

And your mother would like it less.

[laughs]

Oh, don't give you wrong. I'm not in competition with mother.

You, you fascinate me

because, because I can't reach you.

'But if I ever did, I'd throw you away'

'just like everyone else.'

Yeah.

I mean.. Well, it's nothing personal.

That's just the way I am.

Well, I'll tell you, Shelly. Don't throw away too much.

There comes a day we all run out of courage.

[telephone rings]

Hello?

Who?

It's for you.

Hello.

The distributor, he's set up.

[Majors] 'Where are you?'

Wigness and 5th.

Right.

I got an emergency.

Tell your mother I'll call her tomorrow.

How's the quality on the last shipment?

[footsteps approaching]

'Majors.'

You crazy?

You're buying a death warrant.

Not if you don't tell anybody.

Where do you keep your stock?

Wh..

Wh-where do you keep it?

It's in the safe.

[Oren] 'Hey.'

- Let's go. - Where?

[Majors] 'Gonna arrange a little accident.'

Car goes off the road, catches fire.

Nothing left.

Come on, punk. Come on!

Come on. Move it.

Look, look, look, Majors. Let's talk a deal.

- Come on! - No, no, no, wait a minute.

Wait a minute, I know where I can lay

my hands in a lot more cash.

Move it, move it, move, move.

- No, no, wait, wait. - Come on! Come on!

- Wait! Just wait a minute. - Stop..

[grunts]

Wai, just wait a minute. He's got a..

[grunts]

[g*nshots]

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

- Go! - Let's go!

Look out!

Brakes, Artie!

We lost them.

[phone buzzes]

Yes.

Oh, put him on, please.

Yeah, it's Paul and Oren Willard, alright?

Yes, Arth.

Lewis, the Special Investigative Division

has just come up with the name of the man

the organization has assigned

to their West Coast Narcotics Operation.

"Keith Allison."

He's out of St. Louis, isn't he?

Mm-hmm.

According to our information

he's been given control of narcotics

in the Los Angeles area.

Hold on a minute, Lewis.

Well, we've just received information from Los Angeles

on Majors and the Willard brothers.

An informer there said they held up one of Allison's bagman.

Took $80,000 from him.

No doubt, Allison's put out a contract.

On all three of 'em.

[phone rings]

- Hello? - 'Shelly?'

Art. Is you mother there?

Uh, no. She had to work late.

'Say, where have you been? We've missed you.'

Yeah. Listen, I'm in trouble.

I need help. Can you meet me?

- Yes. - Alright.

I'm at 2414, Irolo Street.

- Um, just a minute. - 'No.'

Don't, don't write it down.

- 'Take a cab.' - Alright.

And listen, keep this between us.

Don't leave any messages for anyone.

Art, you aren't hurt, are you?

No. I'm alright. Just get here quick.

Oh, hi.

Uh, his room's at the top of the stairs.

We cleared the rest of the building.

Now the informer told us that Paul Willard's in a habit

of carrying a second g*n concealed on his person.

- Hey! - FBI, Willard.

Hold it right there.

We have a warrant for your arrest

charging you with assaulting federal officers.

- Uh, my leg. - Grab the wall.

- Who's M.B., Willard? - I don't know.

That's my brother's book.

Where is he?

Probably out looking for a pusher.

Here, 213's Los Angeles area code.

See if you can identify that number.

If you're interested in your brother staying alive

'you better tell us where he is?'

Well, uh, look.

[knock on door]

[g*n c*ck]

[Shelly] 'Art?'

- Shelly? - 'Yes.'

- The cab? - It's alright. I paid him.

That's like a good girl. That's a good girl.

Now here's the story. No, don't-don't worry.

I-I got in over my head with some gamblers.

I owe them a lot of money. They're looking for me.

- I got to leave the country. - Well, how did you get--

I haven't got a-any time to explain anymore.

- Do you still wanna help me? - Yes. Anything.

Good. Come here.

That's my car.

Okay? I have a friend who's a pilot.

He'll fly me across the border.

I haven't been able to reach him.

Because the gamblers have all the major airports covered--

Yeah, yeah, yeah. The pilot's name is Ray Calvin.

I haven't been able to get a hold of him by phone.

So here is a list of his hangouts.

Find him.

And when you do, give him this.

But what does he look like?

He's, uh, he's tall, grey-black hair

mustache, a scar on his forehead.

When you contact him, call me.

Okay, groovy.

And by the way, he knows me as Arthur Majors.

You got the stuff? Come on, come on, give it to me.

Come on.

Hey!

[groans]

Alright, where is he?

I don't know. I don't know.

[grunts]

I don't know where Majors is.

I swear to you. I don't know where he's at.

Please, don't..

[Lewis] 'FBI. Hold it.'

Hands above your head.

Get 'em up.

[knocks]

Ray Calvin?

My name's Shelly Binyon.

Sit down.

Where is he?

I'm, I'm supposed to deliver your answer.

One way to Mexico City.

What kind of trouble is he in?

- I don't know. - Tell him it'll cost him.

I want 5000.

Half down. Right away.

- I'll tell him. - Hey.

My telephone number.

[sighs] I'll wait till midnight.

Ken, Ray Calvin.

Remember Artie Majors?

Yeah, he wants to take the long run.

I'd like to know who wants him. Ask around, will you?

Call me back.

- Mrs. Binyon? - Yes.

We're with the FBI.

- Uh, please, come in. - Thank you.

I'm Inspector Erskine. This is Mr. Colby.

- Uh, won't you have a seat? - Uh, no, thank you.

Mrs. Binyon, do you know this man?

Why, yes, it's Arthur Cole.

- 'He's a friend.' - Do you know where he is now?

No, I haven't seen him in a couple of days.

May I ask what's wrong?

He's wanted for m*rder and assaulting federal officers.

That can't be true.

Not Art Cole.

He wouldn't do a thing like that.

His name isn't Cole, Mrs. Binyon. It's Majors.

Where can we find him, Mrs. Binyon?

I don't know where he stays.

He never told me anything about his background.

Other than he was a widower and traveled a lot.

I never knew when I would see him.

Do you know of any other friends he might have?

- Just my daughter. - Is she here?

No, she's not home.

And I'm worried.

She's late and she usually tells me where she's going.

Don't hold out on me, Silvestre.

'You're stalling to jack up the price.'

Artie, I'm not. I don't have anything.

No horse, no acid, nothin'.

I'm sending somebody down for it.

And they better come back with it.

Or I'll come down.

[knock on door]

- Who is it? - 'Shelly.'

Just a minute.

- Did you find Calvin? - He's at the Lumas Hotel.

He wants $5000. Half right away.

Five thousand dollars.

Don't touch it!

One, two..

...three, four, five.

Get this to him.

Get the information on the flight

and get back as quickly as you can.

Just a minute.

I want you to make another stop.

You know the, the Tarkington Inn.

It's a restaurant on South Alameda.

- 'Do you know it?' - I'll find it.

Go to the manager.

His name is Doug Silvestre.

Doug Silvestre.

Give him this.

Go to the kitchen entrance. He'll give you a package.

- What kind of package? - Never mind.

Just bring it here, you understand?

'Just bring it to me.'

Now you know what I am.

Help me.

Please.

Gary Grove, Max Fairley.

Hitmen out of Las Vegas.

Allison's evidently brought them here

to help with the search for Majors.

Then Allison must believe

that Majors is still here in Los Angeles.

Do we have warrants on any of them?

The St. Louis office has warrants

on both Grove and Fairley.

Unlawful flight m*rder.

'We've alerted all units as to the possibility'

of their presence here.

No word on Shelly Binyon?

No, she's, uh, still missing.

We've got to find Majors.

If they reach him first and that girl's with him..

Tom, alert the radio room on Fairley and Grove.

[phone rings]

- Hello. - 'Mr. Calvin.'

Yeah. Is this my, uh, messenger girl?

[Shelly] 'I'm just calling to tell you'

that I'm on my way with the money.

But it'll be a little while.

I, uh, I have to do something first.

[Ray] 'What?'

I've got to stop at a restaurant

to, uh, to get some food

'and then I'll be right over.'

What restaurant? Look, I can't wait all night.

Tarkington in Alameda. Please wait.

- I won't be long. - Okay. Hurry it up.

In Tarkington, huh? I better go pick her up.

You wait here in case I miss connections.

What does she look like?

I don't know, 20, 21.

Blond.

She's wearin' a, uh, knit cap.

It's, uh, tan with a tassel.

Okay.

Unit 3 reports they just spotted Gary Grove.

- Where? - In a car turning off Alvarado.

Under the freeway, heading south.

Bryan, assign another unit to assist 3 in the surveillance.

We'll contact them by radio.

Mr. Silvestre.

Mr. Silvestre.

[gasps]

Police officer.

'Hey, relax.'

'I'd just like to talk to you.'

Well, I haven't done anything.

I was just looking for the manager.

Know a man named Majors?

Oh, no, I, I don't anybody..

I'd like to see your badge.

That won't be necessary. We're gonna have a little talk.

No!

[crash]

[screams]

FBI. Hold it.

'Don't try it.'

How do you feel?

- Where's Arthur Majors? - I haven't seen him.

Then where did you get all the money you were carrying?

Or the car you were driving?

You can do what you want.

I'm, I'm not gonna tell you anything.

Art's always taken care of my mother and me.

He's, he's never asked for a thing in return.

I'll never do anything to hurt him.

Do you know what kind of a man Majors really is?

- He's the only man who-- - I don't think you do.

A year ago, he was charged with the m*rder of a girl

just about your age.

Recently, he was sh**ting two border patrol men

who were left in the desert to die.

That can't be true.

Do you know who that was who was after you?

Oh, some gambler. Art told me--

No, Shelly, he's not a gambler.

He's an enforcer.

He takes care of pushers who step out of line.

Artie?

Majors was responsible for a huge drug operation

that's destroyed the lives of thousands of people

including children.

Oh, I, I can't believe that.

You better believe it, Shelly.

It's not easy to care about someone for a long time and..

...and then in an instant, stop.

Even when you've seen what they really are, you..

...you want so desperately to still believe in them.

Oh, please, help me, inspector.

- 'I don't know what to do?' - I think you do.

Where is he?

He's in a bungalow court.

'2414, Irolo Street.'

He wanted me to arrange for a pilot

to fly him out of the country.

Ray Calvin.

[sighs]

Hey, your partner should have been here by now.

[knock on door]

There he is.

[grunts]

- No, man, Artie, listen. - Silent!

You have a lot of flying to do.

We're searching Majors' place now.

I'll let you know.

Well, Lew, the agents that we sent to the Lumas Hotel

report that Ray Calvin is gone.

According to the manager there, he left about 20 minutes ago

uh, with a man who matches Majors' description.

Where do we have from the local airport?

Well, uh, Calvin has a plane registered to him

at a small field outside of San Fernando cal El Candido.

I've alerted the nearest units.

Let's go.

Hurry up.

Look, this plane is in no shape to make a long hop.

Never mind. Finish the gassing. Let's get moving.

- 'LA-2.' - 2, go ahead.

[man on radio] 'LA-8 and 10 report they're approaching El Candido field.'

'Request instructions.'

Have them estimate situation on their arrival

and make arrest if necessary. We're on our way.

[man on radio] '10-4.'

[engine revving]

- Come on, get it started. - I'm trying.

Come on.

Get up. Get up in the air.

I'm trying, Artie. I need air speed.

[Majors] 'Get in the air. Get it up in the air.'

I'm not gonna make it, Artie.

Get it going. Get it going!

I'm trying!

'I can't make it, Artie.'

- Well-- - 'Don't-don't hit him.'

Oh, Artie, come on, this is it.

Inspector, I'm sorry for all the things I said before.

Before all this

I didn't realize what kind of man he really is.

I didn't realize what kind of person I was becoming.

I guess I still have a lot to learn.

Thanks for coming by, Shelly.

We'll call you if we need you again.

Arthur Majors was convicted of assaulting federal officers

and together with Kirby Jarret and the Willard brothers

was sentenced to a federal penitentiary.

Majors, Gary Grove and Max Fairley

were returned to the state of Missouri

to stand trial for m*rder.

Information supplied by the FBI

to state and federal narcotics authorities

led to the conviction of Keith Alison

and his confederates.
