[instrumental music]
We'd better get back to the party, Sam.
[instrumental music]
[door shuts]
I never had any life but the corps.
Now I want one, but with you.
Hmm.
[twig snaps] What's that?
[dramatic music]
Don't turn around, let's just get back
to the car as quickly as we can.
Now, you get behind me.
[dramatic music]
[g*n c*ck]
Look, take the car.
Take the money, just leave us alone.
You got too good a look at us.
Don't sh**t..
[dramatic music]
[groaning]
[car revving]
[groans]
[grunting]
[instrumental music]
Let's get out of here!
[instrumental music]

[Marvin Miller] Following an attempted break-in
on the United States Marine Corps armory
and the critical wounding of Sergeant Sam Ryker
authorities notified the San Francisco office
of the FBI assistant director Arthur Ward
on an inspection of the western offices
assumed on-the-scene supervision
of the investigation.
[revving]
How is Sergeant Ryker?
He's in an extremely critical condition.
One of the marine range masters at Quantico
was named Sam Ryker.
He was just, uh, leaving when I arrived
but if it's the same man, we know him quite well.
You remember, Ward?
Yes, I remember him.
Very fine young man.
Always more than helpful to our staff at the academy.
How do these men get on the base?
The pulmonary report was they cut through
a rare perimeter fence.
They surprised the sentry at the armory
and knocked him unconscious.
They took his r*fle, but they left it there
'after the as*ault on Ryker.'
Did they actually get in the armory?
Apparently, they tried to break the lock
but they failed.
It's possible that they were frightened off
by the approach of a truck with the relief guard.
They discovered the sentry and sounded the alert.
Could he describe the men who attacked him?
'White, male, early 20s.'
One of them had light hair.
We'll be able to interview them when we get to the base.
And we'll get an update of the medic report
on Ryker's condition.
What type of weapons were in the armory?
The latest issue automatic r*fles.
[dramatic music]
[doorbell ringing]
Get that. Sit down.
- Diane. - Umm..
- I know I'm late, but-- - It's alright, sit down.
Why'd you nail that marine?
Look, he spotted us.
There was nothing else we could do.
And you panicked.
You were sent in to get weapons
not to expose a plan by knifing somebody.
Well, we didn't mean to, Stan.
But you did. You blew it.
Now, if they guess what our plan is..
...every base will be on full alert.
Our clients want those weapons.
How are we gonna get them, Arthur?
There's always a way to get the g*ns, Stan.
Sure.
.45, Thompsons, flintlocks..
...muzzleloaders.
That's what they want! Feel it!
'Light, portable, fires ten rounds per second.'
That's what they're paying top money for
and I need someone who can get 'em.
Now, you two sold yourselves
as pros and I bought it.
We can still do it.
'Give us another chance, Stan.'
Alright.
Stay on tap, I'll be in contact.
[instrumental music]
[Stan] Got another operation in mind.
It'll have to be soon.
Where?
Beat it.
[dramatic music]
'All mistakes by the board.'
We're still a team, right?
Meatheads.
[door shuts] So?
Why do you keep them around..
...if that's what you think about them?
I need them for the next operation.
I don't have time to recruit anyone else.
'I have to make a quick score.'
'The clients are getting impatient.'
Who are the clients, Stan?
I know.
Extremists.
But who? Which group this time?
I can show you what they look like.
Money?
Oh, is that what it's all about, Stan?
- Everything? - 'You don't like it?'
You don't like any of this?
Oh, umm..
Mm, I love you.
I-I don't care about anything else.
- Umm.. - Fetch me a drink, will ya?
Stan?
That marine, he might die.
So?
If they trace it..
Trace what?
Right now, they're running around in circles.
[instrumental music]
[birds tweeting]
[female announcer] 'Calling Dr. Stevens. Dr. Stevens, please.'
'Could you please check with the nurse on duty in Ward B?'
Oh, it happened so quickly, I don't remember much about it.
They wore dark clothing, young.
And they looked like black snakes.
You said one of them was blond.
Yes.
Can you remember which hand he held the knife in?
- This hand. - He was left-handed?
Yes, 'cause when Sam hit him
he used this hand to hold his ribs.
We're doing everything we can.
Can I see him?
Why don't you get some rest?
We'll notify you if there's any change.
I'd like to stay, if I may.
Very well.
Excuse me.
Radiogram, Mr. Ward.
Tim, get a description of the man Ryker hit
to all doctors in the hospitals.
He may have sought medical help.
Eh, the director ordered me back
to Washington for a conference.
You'll have to take over those.
I'll keep in touch, Arthur.
Jim, who is your field supervisor
handling extremist groups?
Ed Rivers.
Have him start contacting informants.
[crickets chirping]
[owl hooting]
Where're the weapons?
I told you, it'll take a little time.
We're doing the best we can.
Like last night?
That was an accident.
A bad one.
We're not happy with you, Mayberry.
'We feel you conned us.'
Conned? What're you talking about?
You said you'd get the kind of weapons we wanted.
How? Like you did last night?
We took your word.
We even gave you a down payment.
You doubt I can do it? You want your money back?
We want the g*ns.
And we want 'em by the end of the week.
Otherwise we're gonna have to hold
a little talk about you.
What does that mean?
It means we can't afford mistakes.
Especially the kind that can identify us.
Dig?
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
"Information developed during investigation to date
decimated Department of Defense."
"West Coast military instillations
alerted expedite."
Our informants say that none of the extremist groups
have formed any special commando units.
One of our agents located a doctor in San Rafael
that treated a man for rib injuries.
The man's description fits that of one of the suspects.
"Approximately at least six feet tall
left-handed, blond hair."
And the doctor said that the rib injuries
could've easily been caused by a karate blow.
Here's the medical history for him
that the patient made out on the doctor's office.
'The name and address turned out to be fictitious.'
Mm.
See that this is checked through
the single fingerprint file
for major thieves.
Jim, ask the bureau to send out an artist.
We'll work from the doctor's impression
of the man's appearance, and uh..
...call a meeting with the special squad.
Bring them up to date on what we have so far.
Platte City National Guard Armory.
Ten miles the other side of the state line.
It's got a heavy complement of the weapons that we need.
What's the condition of the armory?
Full alert. Two guards at the main gate.
'Mobile patrols around the perimeter.'
I-I might forget again, can I tape it?
No. Keep it in your head.
'Listen very carefully to every detail.'
'We come down this road through the gate'
'take a left, down this road here to the armory'
'which sets just a little bit below us.'
'We'll back the truck into the armory.'
'You two will take care of any personnels inside..'
[instrumental music]
"Single fingerprint file
"identification division reports
"latent impressions developed on medical history card
"identical fingerprint record
"Arthur Mark Blaisdell, also known as Arthur Blake.
"Arnold Lozy, FBI Number 3554618K."
"Currently subject bank robbery investigation
"Salk Lake City, office of origin
following a suspicious subject."
Call the Salt Lake City office, see if they have
more information on this man.
[revving]
Hold it here, that's good.
[instrumental music]
- How far is the armory? - Five miles up the highway.
Why have we stopped here?
A national guard truck is easier to spot from up here
before it gets too close to the armory.
What time does the truck make its pass?
There's no way to gauge it.
You might have to wait a few hours.
[instrumental music]
Well, it's Blaisdell's apartment.
Alright, Jim, one of his aliases turned up.
- Good. - It was his apartment, that is.
The landlord tossed him out three days ago three days ago
for being behind in his rent.
Well, what did you find?
Oh, the manager found this while cleaning his room.
He thought it might be of interest.
Looks like bits of recording tape.
He obviously tried to burn it.
Well, I'll get this on the first plane back to the lab.
Maybe the radio, uh, engineering section
can make something out of it.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
[indistinct]
[switches clicking]
[rewinds]
[indistinct]
[rewinds]
[Stan] 'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
[dramatic music]
Let's go.
[instrumental music]
[tires screech]
[truck revving]
[revving]
Now.
[tires screech]
Follow the car.
[revving]
[instrumental music]
[Stan] 'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
That's about as clear as we could get it, inspector.
Plight..
I don't know any such locale.
Run the whole tape over again.
We'll re-record here.
[Stan] 'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
[revving]
Looks like we're getting a break.
Put those glasses back on
put your cap low and course through.
[instrumental music]
[dramatic music]
[revving]
Up.
The arsenal keys.
Now.
[dramatic music]
[Stan] 'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
Play it back again at, uh, three and three quarters.
[distorted]
[grunts]
Come on. Come on!
[instrumental music]
[Stan] 'How long will it take to get to Plithe?'
Plithe, plith, plat.
Plode, platt, plath.
If that "I" were an "A".
Platte City.
There's a national guard armory there.
Located right here.
Alert the provost marshal.
Notify the resident agent and get us a helicopter.
[instrumental music]
[thudding]
[instrumental music]
[siren wailing]
[g*nf*re]
[g*nf*re]
[siren wailing]
One, go ahead.
[man on radio] 'Inspector, the suspects have captured a large supply'
'of automatic weapons from the Platte City armory.'
'They've escaped from the armory in two trucks.'
'National guard serial numbers 146321'
'and 189842..'
'...last seen heading west on Route 6.'
Do we have any units in that area?
'No, sir, but the resident agent'
'has notified the state police.'
'Road blocks are being established.'
[instrumental music]
[buzzing]
Alright, stay back.
Go slow. Hold it!
[instrumental music]
- Where's Gage? - I don't know.
Keep walking. We gotta get out of here.
[instrumental music]
[engines revving]
[instrumental music]
[engine revving]
[truck revving]
[g*n firing]
[instrumental music]
[truck revving]
[instrumental music]
[g*nsh*t]
[firing continues]
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
FBI, freeze!
Drop the g*n.
Hands against the wall.
'Move to your right.'
That's far enough, back off.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
You can decide to answer questions now
without having a lawyer present.
You have the right to stop answering at any time.
- You know this man? - No.
He was involved in the arms robbery with you.
Where did he take the rest of the weapons?
I don't know.
Alright, Gage.
Well, Gage has no arrest record
and we can't tie him to any extremist groups.
- Or to Blaisdell? - No, sir.
We just received this teletype.
The resident agent covering Platte City
reports they found an abandoned automobile
used by the subjects just before they hijacked
the national guard truck.
The automobile was stolen from a parking lot
in San Rafael yesterday.
Do we have anything new on the activities of extremist groups?
No. Nothing yet, sir.
Blaisdell's a bank robber
and Gage doesn't have previous arrest record.
I wonder if we're not dealing with mercenaries.
Everything seems to point that way.
[intercom buzzing]
Yes?
I see. Thank you.
Sergeant Ryker was just administered the last rites.
[intense music]
I'll be at the Camp Winson base hospital.
We've got enough fire power to start a w*r.
- Get 'em to us tonight. - 'Name the place.'
- Zoner Woods. - Where exactly?
North end. Take the access route till you come to an old shed.
Zoner Woods, north end, and old shed. What time?
- 8 o'clock. - Alright. What about payment?
We'll have that.
What's botherin' you?
- Gage. - He won't talk.
There's nothing to connect us with him.
It'll all be over in a couple of hours.
We'll be heading out of the country
with enough front money for an international operation.
Smuggling, gunrunning, big time.
Go see Michaels, and check on the truck.
Make sure everything's alright, will you?
What's the matter?
I found out I had some visitors in my pad yesterday.
'The FBI.'
I don't know how they got to me, Stan. I didn't make any mistake.
That means they're a step away from me.
You better stay here, I'll check on everything.
Don't leave the house, I'll be back.
[instrumental music]
Inspector Erskine.
Don't try to speak, Sam, just, just rest.
Don't worry, I'll been gettin' all the rest I need, so..
[sighs]
Last post, huh?
There were so many battles, and I've lived.
But I can't be taken by a couple of punks like that.
- Take it easy, Sam. - Oh.
I'm gonna go check with the chief surgeon.
Well, he's holding on.
Any other man couldn't live with a wound like that
but he's fighting, and he seems to be gaining.
- Is there hope? - There might be.
- May I talk to you? - Of course.
I've got to talk to somebody.
I don't know where to start.
It sounds so wrong, so selfish.
Sam Ryker saved my life
and I've been praying for his over and over. It will live.
That's all that should be on my mind, but it isn't.
You're not in love with him?
I wish respect could command love, but it doesn't.
After what he did..
I hate myself for feeling this way
but I can't marry him out of gratitude.
Tell me what to do.
I'm afraid no one can tell you that.
Why don't you go home and try and get some sleep?
Thank you.
Inspector, telephone. You can take it in here.
Thank you.
Erskine.
Well, inspector, one of the agents on Ed River's squad
has just gotten some good information
from an informant about the stolen weapons.
The sale is to be made tonight.
Where?
Well, the informant doesn't know that.
All he knows is it's tonight.
[doorbell dings]
Get that, will you?
[intense music]
[Diane] 'Hello, Michaels.'
Everything's set.
Alright, you two go ahead, I'll be with you in a minute.
Are you gonna have to use that, Stan? On whom?
The buyers after you get the money?
Or Blaisedell and Michaels?
You won't need them afterwards, will you?
You never used to drink, Diane.
A lot of things have changed lately.
I don't think I know you anymore.
Well, you knew me when you met at that party.
You were slumming, you bought the whole package.
Not the way it's wrapped now.
It used to be exciting.
That carries too low a profit margin.
I didn't come for money the way you did.
I had to use this to get where I am.
Please, Stan. I need it.
You need sleep. Get some.
I'm afraid of it.
I had a dream last night.
Stan, please, don't go out on this.
I had a dream too.
Flying to Paris on a carpet of cash three-feet thick.
You were with me.
I'll be back in a few hours.
[instrumental music]
You're always so sure I'll be waiting, aren't you?
[sighing] Yeah. You're weak, Diane.
You're in love.
And you know what will happen if I don't find you waiting.
[music continues]
And we found this in Gage's effects.
'It's a miniature of a studio portrait.'
And we traced it to a photographer in San Marcos.
He took the picture about six months ago.
'The girl's name is Diane Britt, she's an ex-model.'
'She has no arrest record, at least not in that name'
but...she's been identified as having a boyfriend with one.
"Stanley Mayberry, armed robbery
as*ault and battery."
Do we have a current address on either of them?
Well, just on the girl.
'24/12, Marlboro Lane in San Marcos.'
Alright, let's see what we can find out about her.
Jim, uh, call an immediate briefing on this
for all members of the special squad.
Let's find them.
[instrumental music]
I'll be right down there.
Now, the top of this hill's gonna give us
the best vanish point.
As soon we verify the day of the weapons
I want him dead.
[intense music]
- Diane Britt? - Yes?
We're with the FBI. We'd like to talk to you.
Alright.
[birds chirping]
Inspector, was the address Ms. Britt gave us on Mayberry
of any help?
I'm not sure yet. Does she know about the weapons?
Yes, she does.
Ms. Britt, this is Inspector Erskine.
They said you were coming down here.
- Where's Mayberry? - I don't know.
Where's he delivering the weapons?
Ms. Britt, there's no way to estimate the damage
those g*ns could cause in the hands of criminal extremists.
'We wanna stop it, but there may not be time without your help.'
Zoner Woods.
I heard Stan mention the name on the telephone.
'The north end of Zoner Woods.'
- Excuse me. - Hm.
The agents at Mayberry's house found an automatic r*fle.
And the serial number on it matches one of the numbers
on the stolen weapons.
Well.. Where's, uh, Zoner Woods?
It's about 20 miles north of here.
Right, uh, set up road blocks with the police.
And tell Jim Day to have all agents standby
on the air for further instructions.
Right, inspector.
[instrumental music]
Where are they?
It's early. Relax.
[intense music]
Are all these main access roads been covered?
Yes, and the units report no traffic.
Helicopter's just flown over the area.
There's no sign of any activity.
[man on radio] 'Unit 3 to 1.'
One. Go ahead.
We've advanced to Grid 6 through the northeast ravine.
'Our sound equipment hasn't picked up anything in the area'
'so far.'
Maintain your position.
'We'll proceed to Grid 4'
'and advance through the north ravine.'
Jim, we'll set up a control point here
then have your agents deployed according to plan.
[instrumental music]
Unit 3 to 1.
One. Go ahead.
Inspector, I've just picked up some sounds
north of Grid E3.
'Standby.'
Picking up voices now.
From what they're saying it sounds like they're waiting
to pick someone off.
They could be sn*pers talking about a target.
How many voices?
Only two that I can make out.
Maintain your position, we're on our way.
[man on radio] '10-4.'
[intense music]
[music continues]
[barks]
Clear the way!
[music continues]
FBI. Drop your weapons!
Unit 1 to all units.
Converge on Grid E7 and standby.
[Erskine on speaker] Hold it! FBI.
You are completely surrounded.
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nf*re]
[engine revving]
[g*nsh*t]
[intense music]
Call the bureau, tell Mr. Ward we've arrested them all
and recovered the weapons.
[instrumental music]
[knock at door]
I see you got them, inspector.
Hmm, they made us look pretty good, didn't they?
[chuckles]
Thank you.
Not just for me, but for a lot of other people.
Be talking to you soon, Sam.
Thank you, sir.
- Good luck. - Thank you.
We'll wait for you outside.
- Hi. - You're early.
You got some news for me, haven't you
about not marrying me?
Just before those punks attacked us.
When I was trying to give you the ring, remember?
I could see it in your face.
No chance.
I'm sorry.
Hey.
You stand up, marine.
Everything's gonna be just fine.
[instrumental music]
Bye.
You can go in now.
He says he's gonna survive.
Good.
[Marvin Miller] Mayberry, Blaisdell, Gage and Michaels
were convicted of theft of government property.
Blaisdell and Gage were also found guilty
of the attempted m*rder of Sargent Ryker
and assaulting federal officers.
The extremists were found guilty of conspiracy
and receiving stolen government property.
Prosecution of Diane Britt was declined.
