Tonight's episode

Turnabout.

[instrumental music]

The robbery of an armed car in Monroe Michigan on April 2nd

was only partially successful.

One man had managed to get away with the stolen money.

But his two accomplishes were apprehended on the spot.

One of them critically wounded.

A few hours later the stolen car used in the robbery

was found abandoned near Toledo, Ohio.

When the investigating officer found evidence

that the stolen money had crossed state lines

the FBI entered the case.

And because the amount stolen

was placed in the major theft category

Inspector Lewis Erskine took charge of the investigation.

Some of the stolen money was recently delivered

to the Monroe bank from the federal reserve branch.

I entered the known serial numbers in the NCIC

That'll give us a crack at the driver

in the event he tries to spend any of the money.

Tom, Lewis.

Oh, Ward, we, uh, we may have a lead on the driver

of the getaway car in the Monroe bank robbery.

The identification division is comparing the prints

that we took from the abandoned car with the fingerprint records

of the known associates of McCann and Willis.

Is McCann gonna make it?

Well he's still unconscious but the doctors

give him a good chance.

The other one, Arty Willis, so far anyway

'refuses to cooperate.'

Lewis, how close are you to winding up the Holzy case?

Well, you'll have my report this afternoon.

It's been typed up now.

Well, I'd like you to handle this.

Fly out to Monroe and interview McCann

as soon as he regains consciousness.

We'll leave right away.

I'll let you know as soon as I have anything

from the identification division.

[instrumental music]

Hey, Dave.

I'm gonna take a break for a couple of minutes, okay.

Make it a short one, Alice.

Rush hour starts soon.

[sighs]

Alice.

Come here.

Come on outside. I wanna talk to you.

Richie.

Hey, Richie, what's the matter?

Over here.

Where did you get this car?

- Never mind - Did you steal it?

I had to.

I had to dump the other car. Get in.

- What other car? - Get in.

It was a job for Joe Salka.

He planned it and everything went sour.

Oh.

He said it was gonna be an easy score.

There was something on the radio about a

an armored car in Monroe.

Yeah, that's it.

Richie

they said that there was like

a half a million dollars.

Half a million dollars.

[Alice] 'How did you get left with it all?'

I don't know. Everything went wrong.

Ben got caught and Arty got tumbled and..

And I got left with it.

With all this.

Listen.

Hey, that's Joe Salka's money.

You don't mess around with Joe Salka and his friends.

I just came by to tell you that I've--

That you'll never see me again?

No. I'm gonna send for you as soon as I can.

Oh, Richie, please.

Don't try to con me.

What do you mean con you?

What are you talking about?

I mean, I don't have any claims on you.

I mean, I'm just some girl that you know.

That's not so. You're the only person in my life.

What do you think I am, some kind of Romeo

all the girls chase around after?

[chuckles]

Richie, I wish that we could have got married.

We will. Just wait, you'll see.

Maybe, maybe I could go with you.

I mean, maybe I could help.

Why? What do you want this kinda grief for?

I love you.

No, Alice, it won't work out.

Now, well, you're right. You are right.

I'd just be a drag.

Alice!

- Get back here. - Hey!

[instrumental music]

Yes, thank you.

Well, McCann's been taken of the critical list.

[telephone ringing]

Doctor said we may be able to interview him this afternoon.

FBI.

Yes, sir, he's right here.

Lew, Mr. Ward.

Yes, Arthur.

Lewis, I was hoping I'd catch you.

The latent prints from the getaway car

used in the Monroe robbery have been identified

with a Richard Billings.

And he was convicted of the attempted robbery

of a taxi cab driver four years ago.

He served time in the Ohio state penitentiary with Ben McCann.

The Cincinnati office called the prison

and found out he was released last July.

But he's been in violation of his parole since August.

Cab driver?

I'd say this job was a little out of his league, wouldn't you?

Well, there's nothing in his background

or McCann's or Willis' to indicate

they could plan and execute a job of this size.

Does Billings have any family?

No, but the person to be notified

in case of a emergency is, uh..

Alice Kranz at 12033 west home

in Toledo.

Well, it certainly sounds as though this robbery

was master minded by someone else.

You may be right.

What's the latest on McCann?

He's of the critical list.

We're hoping to see him this afternoon.

Good. Keep me informed.

And I'm sending along Billings' identification record.

Fine, Arthur.

[dramatic music]

Richie, do you have to go so fast?

Well, I gotta make all the time I can.

I gotta get rid of this car pretty soon.

And then what?

I don't know.

I've gotta call Joe Salka.

Boy..

I've never been so close to so much money before.

Hmm.

How much do you get?

Five grand.

Listen, that's the deal we made.

'I didn't know there's this much in it.'

'And don't you worry.'

I'm gonna get more, a whole lot more.

Can you trust Salka? I mean, he didn't even tell you

that there was a half a million dollars.

Well, things are different now.

I don't get mine he don't get his.

[chuckles]

[instrumental music]

You got any change?

Hello, Mr. Salka, this is Richie.

Richie. Good boy, Richie, you alright?

Yeah, yeah, I'm, okay.

[Joe] 'What about the merchandise?'

Oh, I got it. All of it.

'That's why I'm calling, I didn't want you to think'

'I'd run out on you.'

Are you kidding?

I knew you could handle it, Richie, you're a real pro.

- I'm proud of you. - 'Thanks, Mr. Salka.'

Where are you calling from?

Cresthaven.

It's a little town about 50 miles north of Toledo.

'Listen, Richie, you're hot.'

I'm gonna help you.

You tell me exactly where we can meet you

some place quiet and deserted.

Well, I passed a cemetery a few miles back

there ain't nobody around there.

Cresthaven Cemetery, good.

I'll have someone meet you there at 2:30.

Be sure to bring the merchandise.

Yeah, now about that money you promised me, Mr. Salka.

Oh, you'll get it and with a special bonus, Richie.

I can't afford to lose a man like you.

What kind of bonus?

How does, uh, ten grand sound to you, Richie?

'That's a grand total of 15 thousand.'

'All yours.'

It ain't enough.

What did you say?

Fifteen grand is not enough, Mr. Salka.

Well, this, uh, this bonus is just the beginning, Richie.

I've got big plans for you.

Yeah, well, I got some plans of my own.

I think I deserve more than 15 thousand.

Well, we're two reasonable man, Richie.

I'm sure we can work something out. What'd you have in mind?

Well, the way things are

I think I'm worth at least, uh..

- Twenty thousand. - Twenty?

[Richie] 'Listen, without me nobody gets anything, right?'

So, that's my price.

Alright, 20 thousand.

That's what I respect about you, Richie.

You drive a hard bargain.

Twenty thousand.

He's got all the cards and he's playing for peanuts.

Yeah, I kinda like him.

I wish I could trust him to keep his mouth shut.

- But, uh.. - But you want me to hit him.

And be sure you get the money first.

Are you the manager?

Yes, I am.

I'm Inspector Erskine with the FBI.

This is Special Agent Colby.

What can I do for the FBI, inspector?

I understand an Alice Kranz works here.

Not anymore she doesn't.

She took a break this morning and I haven't seen her since.

'Left me completely short-handed at lunch hours.'

Well, do you know where she left?

Last I saw of her was she was riding out of the parking lot.

Not a word, not a single word to me, the counterman or anyone.

Was she alone?

No, she was with that boyfriend of hers.

- Is this the man? - 'Yes.'

'Yes, of course.'

That's him, Richie.

Richie Billings. Is she in trouble again?

Does, uh, does Mrs. Kranz

have any friends or relatives around here?

No. Just Richie unfortunately.

'Oh, he's nice enough in his own way but he's sort of a dr*fter.'

But, I guess a girl like Alice

she can't be to choosey.

Did you see what kind of a car he was driving?

I wasn't Richie's. He doesn't own a car.

And neither does Alice.

Well, can you describe the car they were using?

I just got a quick look at it.

Green sports coupe. Looked brand new.

I'm afraid that's all I can tell you.

Green sports coupe.

Well, thanks very much, if she should come back

we'd appreciate a call.

[instrumental music]

[birds chirping]

[engine revving]

[dramatic music]

Hi, Barney.

Where's Mr. Salka?

He sent me. Is that it?

- Where's my money? - Don't you trust us?

I'm supposed to have 20-Gs.

[music continues]

Steady, Richie.

Get rid of it.

Over there. Take that with you.

[music continues]

[g*nf*re]

[engine revving]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

[knocking on door]

McCann.

We're with the FBI.

[sighs]

Now what?

We wanna talk to you about the robbery.

[Colby] 'Before we start..'

...you have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say can be used against you.

You have the right to have an attorney.

'If you decide to answer questions now'

'without having an attorney present'

'you have the right to stop answering at any time.'

Where can we find Billings?

Richie? You mean, he made it?

Um-hm.

[chuckles]

Well, he had the money with him in the car.

That's right.

Half a million dollars.

Half a million?

You didn't know there was that much in the job, did you?

But I don't know what you're talking about.

I think you do.

'Who planned it?'

- I did. - No, you didn't.

What's more, they're splitting up $500,000

and you're the one who's gonna stand trial.

'Who's behind it, McCann?'

- Joe Salka. - Who?

Joe Salka.

'He was the architect. He planned the whole thing.'

Now he told us, there'd be less

than a $100,000.

Where were you supposed to meet him?

I told you too much already just..

Where?

Where can we find Salka?

[dramatic music]

[door closes]

[music continues]

Now what are we gonna do?

First thing we do is ditch the car.

Yeah.

Then you need some clothes.

So do I.

And I want you to get something expensive.

Classy.

Get your hair done, the works.

You think that we should spend this money so soon?

[Billings] 'Why not?'

We'll be out of the country before they have

a chance to trace it.

What?

Canada. We're going into Canada.

Canada! How can we?

They're probably watching all the border stations.

Well, that's why we're in Cleveland.

I know a man here who can get us across, his name is Leo Conway.

You sure he'll do it?

Well, I've done some things for him.

Maybe he'll do some for me.

You talk like you're Joe Salka or somebody.

No! I'm wealthier!

Now, I gotta make a call and get rid of the car.

You go get you clothes.

I'll meet you over there in front of that jewelry store

in about, uh, two hours, okay?

Okay. You be careful, huh.

I love you.

[instrumental music]

[car door closes]

[music continues]

[engine revving]

[telephone ringing]

Conway's wrecking company.

- Mr. Conway, please. - 'Speaking.'

Mr. Conway, this is Richie Billings.

Sorry, you got the wrong number.

Now, hold on a minute, don't hang up, Mr. Conway.

What do you want?

A way out of the country.

- No chance, you're too hot. - I'll pay.

Well, it might be expensive.

I have to protect myself all way around.

I just told you, I'll pay.

Okay. Where can I reach you?

I'll call you.

- Give me a couple of hours. - Alright.

[scoffs]

[sighing]

[dialing]

Uh, let me talk to Joe Salka.

[dramatic music]

[male #1 on radio] 'The Cleveland office found the sports coupe.'

'It was abandoned on a side street.'

'Anything on Salka, inspector?'

We located his apartment but he wasn't there.

One of the tenants saw him leave with a suitcase.

[male #1] 'He's probably looking for Billings.'

Call Cleveland back, Hal, tell them we're on our way

and have them set up surveillance on bus depots

railway terminals and airports.

[dramatic music]

Alice.

Oh, yeah.

How do I look?

Why, I swear I didn't recognize you.

[chuckles]

You look fantastic.

- You really mean it? - Yeah.

Oh, you-you-you look terrific too.

Well, get used to it 'cause

that's the way it's gonna be from now on, first class.

What's the matter?

[sighs] Oh, I don't know. It..

It all seems so useless.

I mean, all we can do is run and hide.

Well, it doesn't have to be that way forever.

Just until we get out of the country.

Then we'll get a nice little house

and we're gonna settle down.

And I'll get you everything you want.

Anything.

What about a ring?

For every finger.

Just this finger.

Sure.

[chuckles]

You wait here a second, I gotta call that guy Conway up.

- I'll be right back. - Okay.

[dramatic music]

- Inspector, Tom. - Hi.

Good to see you again.

- Won't you sit down? - Thanks.

- Anything new on Salka? - Nothing yet.

- And what about Billings? - Nothing.

You better check his background again, Doug.

And the girl's.

They must have come to Cleveland to see someone.

[chopper whirring]

[intercom buzzing]

Yes?

Alright, Jack, hold on.

Jack O'Neill at the airport, inspector.

Salka just arrived by private plane.

Put him on the speaker.

Uh, Inspector Erskine, Jack, are you sure it's Salka?

[chopper whirring]

Yes, sir, I'm positive.

He just got into a cab, heading towards airport boulevard.

Alright, we're leaving now, keep him under surveillance.

[Jack] 'Ten-four.'

[dramatic music]

Hello?

I didn't hear your car.

Parked it couple of blocks down the street.

Yeah.

Well, now, you look like you could afford ten big ones.

That's what it'll cost.

What am I buying?

One way trip to Canada in one of my vans.

Alright.

I got someone with me.

A lady.

Well, that-that makes it a little tougher.

And I'm not payin' out any more money.

Okay. We'll make room for two.

You settle real quick.

I just wanna get you on the road

before there's any trouble.

Now, we'll need some passports.

Because we're going on to Europe.

You know anybody around here who does something like that?

Yeah, I got a guy in Canada, but

Well, I'll-I'll see what I can set up.

I know a paper man in Buffalo.

It's possible we could stop on our way.

Okay-okay, uh, we'll work something out.

Look, I gotta have something more definite than that.

[car engine revving]

It's Salka.

[dramatic music]

[music continues]

[indistinct chatter]

[music continues]

[tires screeching]

[music continues]

Be careful, he's out there somewhere, Joe.

[music continues]

[g*n c*ck]

[music continues]

FBI, Salka.

[g*nshots]

[Erskine] 'Drop the g*n.'

[grunting]

[music continues]

- Where's Billings? - Gone.

[music continues]

You won't find him in there. He's gone.

He's just plain gone.

No sign of Billings, inspector.

[instrumental music]

I don't need a lawyer. I have nothing to be afraid of.

What did Billings come to you for?

He thought I could smuggle him into Canada.

And what gave him that idea?

Well, he knows my trucks service that area.

Nothing ill*gal though.

I, I run a legitimate business.

Suppose you tell us what Joe Salka was doing

in your office.

He just happened to come by.

Did he just happen to come by

because you told him Billings would be there?

That's nonsense. Why would I do that?

I wouldn't know, Conway.

You have any idea where Billings might have gone?

I told you, Canada. He's going from there to Europe.

Does he have a passport?

No.

How do you know?

He said something about picking one up in Buffalo.

I guess, he knows a paper man there.

- Who? - I don't know.

Honest, I-I.. Really, I don't know.

Alright, that's all for now.

Conway, this way please.

Doug, have the Buffalo office draw down a list of people

with records for counterfeiting

forgery and dealing in false documents.

And I want Billings' mug shot circulated immediately

and given to the border control.

Yes, sir.

Alice.

He says, he will make the passports.

Oh, can you trust him?

He's the only one in Buffalo I know.

We gotta trust him.

I'm telling you, if he makes one wrong move

I'm gonna blast him.

Excuse me, sir.

Ah, Mr. Jones.

- Mr. Holmquist, this is Alice. - Delighted.

My daughter, Sarah.

Hi.

I assume you're ready to talk business.

Yeah, how much is it gonna cost me?

Five thousand dollars now

and $5,000 upon delivery of the passports.

You gotta be kiddin'.

My friend, it won't be easy getting you into Canada.

You've become something of a celebrity

you know, Mr. Billings.

- We'll need disguises. - Naturally.

'We're not experts, you know.'

'We can make some minor changes.'

Moustache, glasses.

Maybe a new hairdo.

[Holmquist] 'Why not?'

Alright.

Five thousand now.

That's right.

Let me tell you something if you got any ideas of squealing on me

you better forget it.

My friend, I spent seven long years in prison.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Especially not on a paying customer.

Thank you.

Now, shall we get busy?

Sit over here, Mr. Billings.

I'll find you a nice moustache.

Mr. Jones and don't forget it.

Oh, I think that's too much.

I like it.

Uh-huh.

Here, try this wig.

It's groovy.

You just have to wear this for the picture

and when you cross the border.

Hope you two won't mind traveling as newly-weds.

[Billings] 'No, that's okay.'

This is honeymoon country, you know.

Niagara falls and all.

No, that's alright.

Richie and I are gonna be getting married very soon.

Really?

Uh, he's already picked out the rings.

Want some help with that wig?

No, thanks. I can manage.

[instrumental music]

Good morning, inspector. Welcome to Buffalo.

- How are you, Hal? - Fine, thanks.

- Nice to see you again, Tom. - Hal.

Well, how're we doing? Any new leads?

Well, we checked out all the local residents

with known records as paper men.

Narrowed it down to two.

One is Harry Copland employed at the admin print shop.

The other is Alvin Holmquist.

He's a photographer at the Buffalo Bill penny arcade.

And the Cleveland office called this morning.

Apparently, Billings is beginning to spend

some of the stolen money.

A Cleveland bank reported coming across some tens and twenties

'with serial numbers matching those on the flier.'

Have they traced any yet?

They've traced one to an exclusive men's clothing store.

We should have a list of the purchases pretty soon.

Looks like Billings may be trying to change his image.

Hmm.

Get all the details, Hal, we may have to issue a new description.

Yes, sir.

And relay the addresses on the two subjects.

- Copland and Holmquist? - Right.

[instrumental music]

I love you.

You know you're room is even nicer than mine.

Can you imagine that some people spend every day

of their lives in rooms just like this?

All it takes is money.

Hey.

What is it?

She oughta be here with the passports by now.

Richie..

Richie, please let's get out of here.

What are you worried about?

Well, I don't know, I just.. I feel so scared.

In a few hours we're gonna be across the border into Canada.

So what you're worrying about?

Okay, okay. I'm sorry.

Don't be mad with me, huh.

Hey, Richie.

You still love me don't you?

Yeah.

[knocking on door]

- Who is it? - 'Sarah.'

- Hi. Sorry, I'm late. - Come on in.

- Am I interrupting anything? - No. Not a thing.

Daddy had some last minute changes to make.

I think, he did a fabulous job on them, don't you?

Oh, look, the names are different.

I thought that we were gonna travel as newly-weds.

Well, uh, daddy decided that would be too risky.

The FBI will be looking for you together.

You'll be much safer crossing the border separately.

When do we leave?

Alice, you'll be leaving tomorrow afternoon.

You'll be posing as a school teacher on vacation.

And what about Richie?

Uh, we'll be leaving in a little while.

We?

I don't understand.

Daddy had second thoughts.

He felt I should go with him

as his young bride.

'They have no pictures or identification of me and..'

'Oh, besides they won't be looking for him'

'with a younger woman.'

So we'll all meet tomorrow night

at the Royal Crest Hotel in Toronto.

Richie..

Did you know about this?

I think it makes a lot of sense.

Well, I got a thousand things to do.

Look, I'll pick you up in about 45 minutes.

Okay.

I'll bet this was her idea.

What are you talking about?

The passports.

Look...Richie, I'm not gonna buy that story.

I'm not gonna let you travel as that girl's husband.

Now, listen.

It's a cover up.

It's an excuse.

Just to get us across the border, you understand that?

Yeah, of course.

And I bet that she's thought it up in order to get rid of me.

Well, then cool it!

- Cool it! - Look, Richie, please.

Look, I can't compete with her.

Richie, will you give me another chance?

[dramatic music]

You're gonna leave me.

Best thing you can do for me

right now is just leave me alone.

Uh..

I don't know you anymore.

I mean, you, you..

You've changed.

You're different.

You're like..

You're like somebody that I..

...don't even know.

[instrumental music]

[instrumental music]

[Hal on radio] 'Unit 15.'

Fifteen.

[Hal on radio] 'Inspector, we just learned from a reliable informant'

'that Alvin Holmquist paid off'

'some long-standing debts last night.'

'About $3,000 worth.'

Thanks, Hal, 15 out.

[indistinct chatter]

- Holmquist? - Yeah, that's right.

We're with the FBI. We'd like to talk to you.

Oh. By all means. Come on in.

You'll have to forgive this mess.

We've been extremely busy.

Now, then, what can I do for you?

We're looking for a man named Richard Billings.

Do you know him?

Sorry. The name isn't familiar.

Well, then, do you recognize this photograph?

I'm afraid not.

You know, your police photographers

never use the proper lighting.

Say, is this the man that robbed that armored car?

Yes, that's right.

Well, I saw his picture in the newspaper.

What makes you think I'd know this man?

We have reason to believe he's in Buffalo

looking for a passport.

Oh, h-he wouldn't come here.

I do passport photos, yes.

But, uh, nothing ill*gal.

Seven years in prison cured me of that.

Billings has a lot of money to spend.

Oh. Oh, well, I'm not that desperate.

Business has been pretty good, huh?

Well, you know how things are.

Nowadays, everything's a struggle.

You paid off some large debts last night.

Since when is that against the law?

Where'd you get the money, Mr. Holmquist?

I happened to hit a long shot at the races.

Oh, really?

What tracks open up here this time of year?

Well, I placed the bet through a bookie.

That's your story?

Yes, sir. That's it.

I've got an awful lot of work to do.

I-I-If, I'll have to ask you to excuse me.

[indistinct chatter]

- Well, what do you think? - Let's see what he does.

[knocking on door]

[Sarah] 'It's me.'

- Hi. - Hi.

Do I look like a bride?

Yeah.

[chuckling] Where's your friend?

She's in her room.

She can meet us in Toronto if she wants to.

Sure.

[instrumental music]

[knocking on door]

Alice? Are you in there?

It's getting late.

Yeah, let's go.

Richie?

Richie, I, I wanna talk to you.

Well, make it quick.

Without her.

We're already late.

Richie, Richie, please.

Listen.

We're gonna be in Toronto tomorrow.

And I'd love to have a talk there.

Now..

Now. Or you'll be sorry.

[instrumental music]

Don't worry about her. You can do a lot better.

What makes you think I want to?

[telephone ringing]

Operator, are you there?

Are you sure there's no answer in his room?

Uh, no.

No message, thanks.

[instrumental music]

[car engine revving]

[music continues]

Well, it's about time.

What's wrong?

We're takin' Alice.

Alice? Are you crazy?

You wait here.

[intense music]

Operator, will you get me the local office of the FBI?

And-and please hurry. Yes, yes, it is an emergency.

[instrumental music]

[Erskine] BU15 to all units, converge on the lobby.

Sarah, I'm was afraid I'd missed you.

What's the matter?

I want you out of this thing.

The FBI has been around asking questions.

- Oh, no. - Oh, yes.

Where's Billings?

Uh, he went upstairs to get his girlfriend.

Forget him, let's get out of here..

[intense music]

Where's Billings?

I was coming back to get you!

I was gonna take you with me!

Oh, Richie, I didn't know that.
