I better go see if they got any ice left for this fish.
Good idea. We don't want them to spoil.
[panting]
Hey, Ralph we both got the lemon.
Got any ice?
[engine revving]
[dramatic music]
Hey, were you out there today?
Well, you should've been. It was fantastic.
Look at this. We both let..
[p*stol c*ck]
Please!
'Please..'
Ah!

Tonight's episode
"A Second Life".
[instrumental music]
On the afternoon of September 12
an unknown g*nman shot and critically wounded
a Portland, Oregon City Commissioner, Warren Michaels.
The only eyewitness was the victim's fishing partner
Tom Barber.
He was shown mugshots of known local criminals
and was able to identify Michaels' assailant
as Steven Elliot Chandler
and furnished a description and the license number
of the car in which Chandler fled.
When Chandler's get away car was found abandoned
in Northern California, across the state line
the FBI was called into the case.
That was the hospital, inspector.
Michaels' still unconscious
and in very serious condition.
Any indication of the motive?
Well, Michaels is a city commissioner.
And lately, he's been pushing for
tough local laws aimed at organized crime.
[intercom buzzing]
He may have been putting more pressure
on them than they can take.
Yes, Mr. Ward. For you, inspector.
Yes, Arthur.
Now, Chandler recently completed
a sentence for as*ault.
Prior to that, he served a term for armed robbery.
And he's known to have mob connections.
Well, the feeling here seems to be that the m*rder attempt
was connected with Michaels' campaign
against organized crime.
Mm-hmm.
We're still checking his know associates.
Anyone he might turn to for help.
I'll let you know as soon as we come up with anything.
I'll send Chandler's identification record
and any additional photos to you right away.
Good luck.
Jim, as soon as Candler's, uh
record and photographs come in, see that they're furnished
to police and medical authorities.
And, uh, Michaels' fishing partner..
'Thomas Barber.'
Where can we find him?
He's with Mrs. Michaels at the hospital.
[instrumental music]
[vehicles revving]
[music continues]
[sigh9ing]
[groaning]
No, wait, I'll get it for you.
Here. Here.
And you know, you really don't need to sit over here
and, uh, suffer like this.
Look, I'm next in line to go see the doctor.
But I can wait a half an hour.
So, why don't you take my place, huh?
Really, be my quest.
- Are you allowed to do that? - Oh, sure.
Hey, look, I'm gonna survive.
But you, I'm not so sure about, so..
...come on.
Come on.
Here. Just take it easy.
What's this, Marcy?
He just came in and, and I know an emergency when I see one.
- Alright? - Alright, right in here.
Go on. He'll take care of you.
[dramatic music]
[sighing]
[groans]
[instrumental music]
- Mr. Barber? - Yeah.
I'm Lewis Erskine with the FBI.
This is Special Agent Colby.
Oh. This is Mrs. Michaels.
We're very sorry to have to disturb you
at a time like this.
How can I help you, Inspector?
- Sit down, Inspector. - Thank you.
Mrs. Michaels, have you any idea
why your husband was attacked?
My husband isn't the kind of man who normally make enemies.
Have, uh, any threats
been received against your husband recently?
No. But if there were, he wouldn't let me know.
Well, are you aware of any, Mr. Barber?
No, no, he didn't say anything to me, either.
You got a pretty good look at the man who shot him?
I sure did. Yes.
He came running up on the dock
to his car just 10 feet away from me.
Did see how badly he was cut?
I believe it was on the left side.
There was a great deal of blood.
Are any of you gentlemen Inspector Erskine?
Yes.
There's a call for you at the desk.
'You can take it on our private line.'
Oh, thank you. Excuse me.
Hello?
Oh, Lewis, I have some more information on Chandler.
His cell mate during his last sentence
with a man named Edward Dowling.
He was paroled a month after Chandler
and he went home to Red Bluff in Northern California.
Well, that's not too far from where Chandler's car was found.
Mm-hmm!
And Lewis, Dowling is currently working
as a sales man in a used car lot there.
Thanks, Art. We'll get down there right away.
[instrumental music]
Operator?
I wanna place a long distance collect call
to Mr. Lee Thompson..
...in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
[music continues]
[birds chirping]
Hey, kid, I've been worried sick about you.
Where are ya?
San Francisco.
I figured this is a pretty good place
to get lost for a while, you know?
Might be a good idea.
I mean, things could be better with that job you did for us.
Yeah, I know, Lee.
'Well, what's with the customer, anyway?'
Well, he hasn't bought yet.
If he buys from your owner, everything's peachy.
But if he doesn't, the home office isn't gonna like it.
- 'I don't have to tell ya.' - Look.
I-I did everything just like you laid it out.
It just went sour, that's all.
[Lee] 'Oh, sure, kid. I know.'
It happens. Look, don't get me wrong.
You're my boy, you know that.
But, uh, I wouldn't kid you, either.
There could be some problems if the customer doesn't buy.
'I'll keep an eye on 'em, and, uh'
'if it looks like he needs a push, I'll take care of it.'
Yeah, that's great, Lee.
'That sure takes a load of my mind.'
Uh, listen..
Where you gonna be in San Francisco?
I don't know yet.
I haven't found a spot.
When I do, I'll let you know.
'You do that.'
Remember.
I promised your old man I'd take care of you.
'Uh, don't worry, kid.'
'It'll turn out alright, you hear?'
Yeah, I hear.
Well, thanks for everything, Lee.
I'll talk to you later.
[sighs]
There was an another report on the radio a few minutes ago.
Uh..
It's still touch and go with the commissioner.
You want me to get the car out?
Feel like seeing the ball game today?
Nah, nah..
I guess not, kid.
No, I don't feel in the mood for ball games.
[indistinct chattering]
Hello?
Hi.
Hey!
Are you feeling better?
- Yeah, I'm fine. - Far out.
Say, uh..
You wouldn't by any chance know where there's a place
I can stay, would you?
Yeah, you know, this place right near me.
Oh, yeah? Where is that?
Oh, it's over in the, the Bayside Art Colony in Sausalito.
It's really a great place.
Look, I'm going over there right now. Would you like a ride?
You wanna.. Why don't you come over and look at it?
[crow cawing]
- Sure, why not? - Okay, great, let's go.
[instrumental music]
[female #1] 'Marcie.'
See you next week.
Yeah, bye-bye. Take care of yourself.
How far is this place from yours?
- It's right next door. - Oh, yeah?
Yeah.
- You parked nearby? - Mm-hmm.
[instrumental music]
Ain't she a beauty?
I took this little jewel in trade
on a brand new pick-up truck.
Now, can you imagine that?
Well, that's like swappin' a luscious movie queen
for some old gal who cooks good.
[laughing]
- Mr. Dowling? - Yeah?
We're with the FBI.
'I'm Inspector Erskine, this is Special Agent Colby.'
Well, you fellas kinda
snuck up on me there.
Ah, I figured you for customers.
We're looking for Steve Chandler.
Have you seen him?
Heck, no!
Well, what, where-where would I see him?
Uh, my parole says I gotta stay clear
of questionable associates.
That's the way they put it.
I guess that fits old Stevie boy to a T.
We thought he might have dropped by here last night
on his way through town.
Steve was in town?
I think so.
I didn't see him.
What about the car that was stolen
from this lot last night?
[sighs]
Look, what do you guys want from me?
[Erskine] 'One straight answer.'
Alright. Yeah, I saw him.
About four o'clock this morning, he wakes me
out of a sound sleep.
Tells me I gotta fix him up with another car
because the one he's drivin' is hot.
And the car you fixed him up with was a grey '71 sedan
license number 7810-TG?
Yeah.
That's it.
Look, I tried to tell him to get lost.
But he said he'd k*ll me if I didn't help.
I know it was a dumb play.
But I was scared.
I had to do it.
Or he'd have k*lled me.
[dramatic music]
[sighs]
- How were the fights? - Lousy.
Those two bums waltzed around for ten rounds
and never laid a glove on one another.
Did you have your radio on on the drive home?
No. Why?
The eleven o'clock news had, uh
another hospital bulletin on Commissioner Michaels.
'He's still unconscious but this time'
'they say he's gonna make it.'
They said that?
I guess that doesn't help Steve much, huh?
You know how the board feels about things like this.
If a man does his job right, they don't mind
a little trouble to help him out.
But if he blows it..
Then the board starts worrying.
Like what happens if Steve gets busted.
What happens if he sings?
He's like my own.
I shouldn't have pushed him.
Well...he had to make his move sometime.
Yeah, you're right.
'You didn't have any problems'
'when you took your first contract.'
All the time, you two were comin' along.
I kept givin' you a bad time
tellin' you to be more like Steve.
Now, I wish he'd been more like you.
Look.
We'll put somebody else on the job.
Somebody with a lot of experience.
You want me to hit him?
No.
'We'll import somebody this time'
'and we'll get it done right.'
Maybe then the board won't care so much
Steve needed a little backin' up to finish it.
Well, I don't know, man. That's gonna be tricky, you know.
Michaels is in the hospital now.
So?
People die in hospitals every day, don't they?
[instrumental music]
I'm sure glad that I asked you over for breakfast this morning.
By the looks of things, you're gonna sit over there
in that new pad of yours and starve to death.
Aren't you eating?
No, no, breakfast and I don't hit it off right now.
- Hey, do you want some more? - No! No!
- Sure? - Yeah.
You sure?
No. We're fine.
I really should pay you.
Yeah, well, you are paying me.
Why don't you come sit here where the light's better?
For what?
Well, you are paying me for breakfast by modelling for me.
So, come sit here where the light's better.
Modelling?
That's right. I'm an artist.
I even get paid for what I do sometimes. So..
- Really? - Yeah.
So why don't you just come sit over here
so I can finish sketching you..
...in the light.
Go on.
Go on.
Steve, please.
You can sit down.
I promise you it's not gonna hurt.
Hey, that's great.
That's great. Now just look out at the water.
Haven't you have ever been sketched before?
- No. - No?
Just relax.
You know, here we are, new neighbors
and I don't even know your last name.
- It's Kramer. - Kramer.
Alright, and now you're supposed to say
"Hey, you know what? I don't know yours either."
Oh, it's Brandon. Marcy Brandon.
How do you think that's gonna hold up against
"Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore?"
- Say again? - Oh, never mind.
Let's talk about you. I'm really very curious.
'How'd you get hurt?'
Oh. Oh, I see. Uh..
Where are you from? You-you from around here?
No.
No, what?
No, I'm not from around here.
Oh, right. Right.
Well, what do you do for a living?
Lots of different things.
Lots of different things.
You know, Steve, this is really very groovy.
I'm really learning a lot about you.
[chuckles]
I mean, most of all
I'm learning that I cannot draw you.
Your eyes..
[sighs]
Well, you know, it's like..
It's like I'm looking through them into you
but there's nobody home.
I'm sorry, please..
Please, don't mind me.
Don't mind me, I'm like this.
I insult all my new neighbors the first day.
I guess that you're off the hook...modelling wise.
Hmm.
[instrumental music]
[dramatic music]
[woman on PA] 'Calling Dr. Stevens. Dr. Stevens, please.'
'Will you please with the nurse on duty in ward B?'
Yes, doctor. I'll tell them.
You may see Mr. Michaels now, but just briefly.
He's still in serious condition.
- Thank you. - He's on the second floor.
Room 218.
[woman on PA] 'Nurse Hyatt, Nurse Ann Hyatt'
'there's a message for you in the superintendent's office.'
[dramatic music]
Hey, where's room 244?
You got me. I don't think the numbers go that high.
Well, maybe it's room number, uh..
[dramatic music]
[grunts]
FBI. Hold it right there.
[muffled g*nsh*t]
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
[muffled g*nsh*t]
[muffled g*nsh*t]
Keep him busy.
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
[music continues]
[muffled g*nsh*t]
[g*nsh*t]
[music continues]
Drop the g*n.
[g*nshots]
Stay away from the g*n.
Lie right there.
[wheel tapping]
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[thudding]
Marcy?
You alright?
What'd I do? Did I pass out?
You're sick, aren't you?
That's why you were at the clinic the other day.
No. No.
No. I'm really very healthy.
Very healthy.
I'm just gonna have a baby. That's all.
That's all.
- You're gonna have a baby? - Sure.
Oh, you know, it happens in the best of families.
'Only, uh, mine wasn't the best of families.'
Well, the boy that I was married to, uh..
We had our problems.
I thought that maybe a baby might help to change things.
But Paul..
Paul saw it as just another problem.
- 'And it was one too many.' - So, he just left?
You know, maybe he was right, because..
We really didn't have what you call a, a going relationship.
And, uh..
I guess that maybe I was a lousy wife.
But, I'm gonna be a real good mother.
I'm sure of that.
But, uh, you're gonna have the baby alone?
Well, Steve, it's not that bad.
I mean, it's not..
I'm not rolling in money but..
...but I make enough money selling my-my pottery
to pay for the rent and the doctor bills.
And that's all I really need.
Yeah.
- Well, you know what? - 'What?'
I think, uh..
I think you need a private doctor.
'You know?'
What do you mean?
I mean I'd like to send you to a specialist.
I think that I could finish it now.
What?
[Marcy] 'The sketch.'
Because you're eyes aren't..
Hey, they're not empty anymore.
That's for being a nice guy.
Thank you.
[sighs]
[sighs]
Yeah, you know what? Uh..
Yeah, I'm gonna ask around town.
I'm gonna find out who the..
...who the best uh, pediatrician is. You know?
- You mean obstetrician. - Obstetrician, right.
[sighs]
Yeah, but, isn't it gonna cost a lot of money?
That's alright.
I can get all dough we need.
'I'm not kidding.'
[chuckles]
Yeah, operator.
I'll take the call.
Lee?
Listen, I ran into something down here.
- I'm gonna need some dough. - Well, sure, kid.
As much as you want, you know that.
- Well, is five grand alright? - 'You go it.'
What do you want? Mail it to you?
[Steve] 'Yeah.'
Uh, mail to S. Cramer, care of M. Brandon.
'B-R-A-N-D-O-N.'
'Bay Side Art Colony, Sausalito, California.'
There'll be a cashier's check in the mail
as soon as the banks open in the mornin'.
Hey, Lee, thank you very much.
I really appreciate this.
Hey, Bruno.
That was Steve.
He got an address.
I told you.
Maybe I could've got him off the hook the first time.
But we've had to waste Greene.
Greene had a lot of friends on the board.
Let me take care of it.
Yeah.
Hit him.
[dramatic music]
Who's the man you caught?
His name is Martin Greene.
He's wanted for m*rder in Illinois.
[sighs]
Never dreamed it would go this far.
What are you talking about?
A man named Lee Thompson..
[sighs]
Think he's a..
...local headman for the mob.
[sighs] Several days ago
I got a call.
'Whoever it was said, "Lay off making waves'
'"for Thompson's people.'
Or else.."
[sighs]
I see they meant it.
Can you, ah, can you remember anything else
that might help us?
Just what I told you.
That g*nman who shot me have you caught him yet?
Not yet.
Well, Commissioner, I hope you're on your feet soon.
Thank you, inspector.
Inspector, they found the car that Chandler picked up
in Red Bluff abandoned in a parking lot
of a North San Francisco supermarket.
There was quite a bit of blood on it.
So, he may need medical attention.
Thank you.
We've known that all along.
Well, Thompson's still at his home
but his number one boy, Bruno Reiker
was seen getting on a plane in a little airport
outside of Lake Oswego.
Agents sent there checked
the airport manager for the destination.
It arrived there in San Francisco just two hours ago.
Jim, have San Francisco check airport car rentals
and cab companies against Reiker's description.
And uh, tell 'em we'll be on the next flight down.
[instrumental music]
- Good morning. - Good morning.
I was just gonna call you for some breakfast.
No, thanks. I'm not really very hungry this morning.
I'll see you later.
Well, where're you going?
Is there something wrong?
[telephone rings]
Hello.
Lee, Steve.
Oh?
Oh, yeah. How you doin', kid?
I just saw the paper.
Oh, then, you know.
It went sour.
Yeah, I know.
What happens now? Your people can't be too happy.
Now, you let me worry about that, kid.
But if, if the customer makes it, I'm in hot water.
There's always a way.
You just give me a little time.
[Steve] 'Well, what're you gonna do?'
You leave it to me.
Look, I can't just stay around here on ice.
You stay!
Look, you wanted some money and I'm sendin' you some.
Lee, what are you planning?
You're sending someone down to see me?
Look, I don't deserve that, kid.
Not after all these years.
That's it, isn't it?
You're sending someone down to look me up.
'But not with any money.'
Steve! Now, listen!
[telephone disconnects]
I'm, I'm sorry that I followed you but..
- Steve, what's wrong? - Nothing. Just some business.
No, wait a minute.
Steve, no hard feelings.
If you've got problems..
If you've got problems, I want to help you, Steve.
- Please don't shut me out. - Look, I'm sorry.
Maybe you got a right to know, but I can't tell you now.
Except that, some people are after me.
What..
What do you mean, there are people?
The law and some others a lot worse.
Yeah, but, what I..
Because I've done things in my life.
Things I wished I hadn't done.
But it's too late now.
I wish I could start all over again.
Start when I first met you. But I can't.
Now, I got to go.
Where, where are you going?
Somewhere out of the country. Mexico, maybe. I don't know.
- I want to go with you. - After what I just told you?
Steve, why didn't you just tell me?
That you've been in trouble?
That there's police looking for you.
There are people after you..
Look, none of that, none of that matters.
I don't care about any of that.
Marcy, you don't even know who I am.
- I know that I love you. - No, no.
Listen to me. Listen to me!
I'm in serious trouble.
If you're with me, that puts you in trouble, too.
I can handle it.
No, no. It wouldn't work.
Maybe later, when it's safe.
- I'll send for you. - No.
No, don't you understand if you don't take me with you now
I'm not ever going to see you again?
And I can't live with that.
Oh.. Marcy, I got to go.
I got to get a car and get out of here.
Please. Please?
Marcy, I promise I'll send for you.
I'll send for you, I promise!
I'll send for you when it's safe.
I promise.
[Marcy] 'Steve.'
Steve.
- Lewis. - Hello, Alan.
- Tom. - Alan.
Inspector, we may have a break.
Agents on the canvasing operation have just located
the doctor at a local medical center.
Now he feels that a man he treated may have been Chandler.
What about Bruno Reiker?
Well, we found a cab driver who remembers taking a man
of Reiker's description to the Cedars Hotel.
They sent agents to the desk but he'd left his room
and he hadn't returned.
Lou feels Thompson sent Reiker down here to k*ll Chandler.
I think we have to go on that assumption.
Steve?
That's who I am lookin' for, too. Uh..
Steve gone out, has he?
He's not in.
I'd like to wait for him.
He isn't here.
'He's gone.'
'He isn't coming back.'
Is that right?
Look, I'm telling you.
He's not gonna be back.
Now, he, he knew that you were coming.
And he knew why.
'So, he ran.'
'He said that that was the only thing he could do.'
[sighs]
Well, I'll tell you, uh, chicky.
He'd better come back.
And, uh..
If you know of a way to get him back here..
...you'd better come up with it.
Or, uh..
...you're going to have some pretty big problems.
You know what I mean?
[instrumental music]
Yeah, I remember him. He said he slipped in the shower.
Broke the glass shower door and cut the upper part of his chest.
'Gave his name as, uh, Kramer.'
Did he give an address?
Steven Kramer, no local address.
'Sorry, looks like we're not gonna be much help.'
Wait a minute.
I think he left with Marcy Brandon.
Does she know the patient?
- Yeah, nice girl. - I remember.
He was asking her about an apartment to rent.
Did, uh, she give an address?
Oh, all we have is Bayside Art Colony, Sausalito.
'I'm afraid it isn't much help.'
[Lewis] 'Thank you.'
[engine cranks]
[telephone rings]
Answer it.
Hello.
Marcy, I was wrong. I want you to come with me.
'Get all your stuff together.'
'I'm comin' by to pick you up right now.'
No, Steve, don't come back.
'He's here.'
I can't hear you anymore, Steve.
'You were doin' pretty good there for a while.'
Bruno, what's going on?
Not a thing.
I've just been getting acquainted
with your little friend here.
'Listen, um, come on back here.'
'You and Lee, uh..'
'...can just go in front of the board together.'
And Lee's gonna get you squared away with them.
He told me to tell you that he would.
You're lying, Bruno.
I think you'd better come back here, Steve.
The little girl's in big trouble if you don't.
I mean, I hate to be that blunt about it
but that's the way you seem to want it.
Do you hear me, Steve?
[woman on radio] 'SF-13.'
SF-13, go ahead.
'Inspector, agents on the canvasing operation'
'at the Bayside Art Colony have just learned'
'that Marcy Brandon is living on a houseboat at the marina.'
Have all units in the area stand by.
[dramatic music]
[music continues]
Why don't you drop your g*n?
I said, drop it!
Thank you.
Won't you let her go, Bruno?
It's between you and me.
Run, Steve! Run!
Please!
[intense music]
[Steve] 'Bruno!'
No! No!
Get me to the police. Hurry.
[music continues]
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
FBI, Reiker.
Let it drop.
Get an ambulance.
[Steve] A second, will you, fellas?
You're taking me back to Portland?
Yes.
When we get there..
...you can tell 'em I'll testify against Thompson.
'He's the guy that ordered the hit on the commissioner.'
I'll tell 'em.
Can we have a minute together inside?
[sighs]
I'm sorry about everything. I really am.
Hey, don't be.
What happened before we met each other
didn't have anything to do with you or me.
'You were someone different then.'
No.
I'm the same person now I was then.
I just didn't know I could really want something
like us together.
And when I found out, it was too late.
Now, listen to me.
I don't want you to come after me.
Or write to me.
I don't even want you to think about me.
And whatever you do..
...I don't want you..
...to figure on waiting for me.
You hear?
You deserve more than a life time of waiting.
I mean it.
And what am I suppose to do?
Say goodbye and good luck?
That's all.
Bye.
Love..
[male narrator] Steven Elliot Chandler recovered from his wounds
and pleaded guilty in state court to attempted m*rder.
He also pleaded guilty in federal court
to inter-state car theft.
Based in part on Chandler's testimony
Lee Thompson and Bruno Reiker were convicted in state courts
of conspiracy and attempted m*rder.
Marty Greene pleaded guilty to assaulting Federal officers
and was returned to the state of Illinois
where he was tried and convicted of m*rder.
