[clatter]
You and I are gonna have a little talk.
You bet we are, old buddy.
Doe, would you mind?
She's trying to use you against me
trying to job us, can't you see that?
Unh-unh. That ain't it.
The problem is you.
You're hung up on her, and you can't admit it
and it's driving you bananas.
I was just trying to hustle up some cash for us.
Now, that's what you said last time.
- It was true then too. - I'm sure.
Listen, a girl needs things, Evan
like a new apartment, new clothes.
Well, don't worry, baby. I was there.
And I'm gonna be there again. Like, in about a week.
You see, I'll be turning out the best looking 10s and 20s
that anybody ever fed to the system.
Why..
...I might just end up being the unofficial treasurer
of the United States.
Judi Randall. We're with the FBI.
[dramatic music]
- Where you going, baby? - I'm sorry.
Remember, as long as you got friends, you're rich.
Ha ha.
FBI.
[theme music]
[Marvin Miller] "The FBI."
A Quinn Martin production.
Starring, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Also starring, Philip Abbott..
William Reynolds.
With guest stars, Stuart Whitman..
Robert Foxworth..
Tim McIntire.
Special guest star, Mariette Hartley.
Tonight's episode "The Double Play."
[instrumental music]
Thank you very much, sir.
Well, Ms. Ferelle.
Mr. Benning.
I was afraid you had already gone back to, uh, Maryland.
'What a pleasant surprise.'
We'll be going back in the morning.
Although I might have to put a harness on this filly
to get her in the car.
Oh, I don't know about that.
I might be very manageable.
Depends on how you treat me.
Uh-huh? Something tells me
I might have to part with some money.
[laughs] Remember that ring you showed me the other day
while Rex was buying me that cute little gold lyre.
Oh, yeah. There it is.
Does, uh, he know?
Not yet.
Ooh, it's pretty.
'Darling..'
- It's for you. - Oh..
Oh, I had to trick you.
It's the only way I could get you here. Is it handsome?
It's a full four and half carats, Mr. Benning.
'We were fortunate to get it through in a state sale.'
Oh, it was just made for you.
Vanessa, you know I never wear a ring.
Oh, won't you?
For me?
If you've got to buy me something
why don't you find something more practical?
No. I want you to have something that means something.
We've already drawn the check.
'You were all set to spend it on me.'
- I still am. - Alright, then.
This is what I want.
I've never said no to you before.
I don't intend to start now.
[laughs]
I believe this is the figure you quoted me, Mr. Welner
including taxes.
Yes, that is correct.
May I?
I'll, uh, just give it a quick polish.
It'll just take a minute.
Don't bother rubbing it, please.
I'm so happy, darling.
Just like that.
Didn't even blink.
Nice.
Well, the bank's closed right now
but maybe there's somebody still there that could cash it for us.
Oh, I shouldn't be too concerned, my dear.
To a man like Mr. Benning, $40,000 is petty cash.
Oh.
[Welner] I hope it brings much happiness, Mr. Benning.
Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you next summer.
- Bye-bye. - Goodbye.
Mary-Lou.
Yeah, this is Jenine, down at Welner's.
Is one of your officers still there?
Uh, we have a cashier's check I like to have verified.
Mr. Welner, the bank never issued
this cashier's check to Mr. Benning!
It must be a phony!
[dramatic music]
Rex, look out!
[woman gasps]
[tires screeching]
[instrumental music]
[Marvin Miller] On the afternoon of September 14th
a man and a woman posing as wealthy tourists
entered a jewelry store in the resort city
of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
and exchanged a worthless check for a diamond ring
valued at nearly $40,000.
In the company of a confederate
posing as a chauffeur
the subjects were observed fleeing in a rented sedan.
Several hours later, when the sedan
was discovered abandoned across state lines
in the vicinity of Wayne's Barrow, Georgia
the FBI entered the case.
Because the men matched the description
of a pair identified
in a series of similar confidence schemes
in Virginia and the Carolinas
Inspector Lewis Erskine assumed
on-the-scene supervision of the investigation.
Welner, FBI.
Inspector Erskine, Special Agent Colby.
When I, uh, got my bearings again
it suddenly dawned on me that he had handled
one of our custom cigarette cases.
I thought his fingerprints might be on it
so I put it away in this.
Hmm.
And, uh, here is the check.
Will your, um, insurance cover the loss?
Well, I don't know, inspector.
You see, I didn't get a bank clearance
before releasing the merchandise.
Any reason why?
Well, yes, for one thing
they had bought a $300 lighter in here
earlier in the week.
Did he give you a check for it?
Yes, the girl wrote a personal check.
There was no problem.
Would you look at these please, Mr. Welner?
See if you recognize any of them.
That's him. That's Benning.
George Adley.
What about the chauffeur?
No, I'm afraid not, inspector.
Tell us about the woman.
Oh, long blonde hair, uh..
good figure.
Uh, somewhere in her early 20s, I'd say.
What name did she use?
Ferelle.
First name was, uh..
Vanessa. Vanessa Ferelle.
'That's it.'
We will need one more thing, Mr. Welner.
A description of the ring.
I could give you a picture.
I was planning on running an ad.
Thank you.
According to description of the girl
he must have found another female accomplice.
Another girl Friday, he won't be back Saturday.
[dramatic music]
Five..
...six..
...seven..
...eight..
...nine.
That's as far as I go.
I guess I never told you, Milkey
that odd numbers spook me.
Take it or leave it.
You made yourself a deal.
[knock at door]
[Toby] 'Hey, old buddy, it's me!'
Milkey, say hello to Berenthal on the way out.
Alight, how'd we come out?
Ten even.
It's just about that many hours late.
Well, it's a stake at least.
Hey! Hey!
Why don't we rip on down the Bahamas
and lay some of these out on that green felt?
I got a feeling we could really make it groove.
- Where have you been? - Oh, now, come on!
What was I supposed to do with the poor girl?
Leave her out in the middle of the road?
I don't know about you
but I was taught to be courteous to ladies.
Courtesy is tipping your head.
Any chance she might have followed you?
[laughs] No.
No, when I went to see her
I, I heard the shower goin'
so I just grabbed one of her shoes and took off.
What do you think of our next benefactor?
Heh. He looks like a kid.
He owns a couple of recording companies.
And he has more than a dozen top country artists
on a personal contract.
[whistles]
Made his first million when he was 24.
Goin' on 30 now, and he's not going back with this.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think
he played the guitar.
He plays the ponies. Plays them big.
And he always loses.
It's the one area of his life
where the Midas touch is missing.
His bankroll couldn't stand the drain.
His ego is hurting.
'How do we lead him in?'
Did you ever hear of a guy named Steve Kubek?
Oh, you mean the big gambler?
He's a gambler of another color.
His horses never lose.
How does manage that?
[scoffs] A lot of people would like to know the same thing.
There he is. He was tried, never convicted.
That was two years ago.
Now he sits in the background
and he has various flunkies place bets for him.
I bet I know who's gonna get to play the part of the flunky.
And if we set it up right
I'm gonna be more than anxious
to have Kubek place a bet for him.
I don't know, but..
...I would be a lot more relaxed
to go on down south and place our own bets.
No, we've had those laughs.
Had 'em for years, and that's all we've had.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
Now, what do you want me to do?
Find us a new girl.
Alright.
[chuckles]
[instrumental music]
I understand the bureau has identified Vanessa Ferelle.
Yes, the lab matched her handwriting
on the personal check she gave to the jeweler
with a check case we had on her four years ago.
Her true name is Judi Randall.
And the jeweler has positively identified her photograph.
US Attorney has authorized a warrant.
Do we have an address on it?
Apartment on Keolu Drive.
We have it under surveillance, but there's been no sign of her.
What about her friends?
There's a boyfriend. An Evan Stack.
He has a local arrest record.
We have him under surveillance too.
[instrumental music]
AT-7 to One.
One, go ahead.
A woman matching Judi Randall's description
just joined Evan Stack at the garage.
We'll be right there.
I was just trying to hustle up some cash for us.
Now, that's what you said last time!
- I was true then, too. - I'm sure.
Listen, a girl needs things, Evan
like a new apartment, new clothes.
Yeah, so?
So they cut me out of my share.
Oh. Wow, that's too bad.
You see? Now, you end up all alone.
That's really rough.
Well, I've got a bulletin for you.
There are dudes all over this country just waiting
and they're not like you.
They are there!
Well, don't worry, baby.
I was there.
And I'm gonna be there again.
Like, in about a week.
You see, I'll be turning out the best looking 10s and 20s
that anybody ever fed to the system.
Why..
...I might just end up being the unofficial treasure
of the United States.
Judi Randall. We're with the FBI.
[dramatic music]
[g*nf*re]
[music continues]
Drop the g*n, Stack!
Turn around.
Up against the truck.
Put your hands up.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
[stopwatch clicks]
[clicks]
I'd say, Vegas.
Maybe New York, Chicago.
One thing for sure, he sure does have inside
written all over him, don't it?
Seems like a shame, don't it?
Just coming in here, and picking up bunch of money?
What are you talking about now?
Futurity, Saturday, over at Kentucky Meadows.
Why, Mr. Kubek.
I'd know you anywhere.
I like your outfit.
No one would ever accuse you of understatement.
What's your name, honey?
For the moment, it's Doe Riley.
That sound alright?
That will do.
How do I know you can pull this off?
Well, if you have to ask, maybe I should worry about you.
You're pretty sure of yourself, aren't you?
Well, I could shiver a little if you like.
But I assume we're being watched.
Toby..
Get rid of her.
- What? - She's wrong.
Everything about her is wrong.
Oh, you're crazy.
Too smart, too sleek.
And I bet she's a lot older than our need.
Well, that's a whole idea, figure it out!
Now, how long can he last
on a diet of straight hair, straight hips
and groovy men?
There's an answer to everything.
And when he's had it up to his body shoved with that
what's he gonna reach for?
A woman.
Guess who qualifies.
Now, you're talking to the expert, old buddy.
Stop worrying.
- He wasn't very friendly. - Oh, yeah.
That didn't mean anything.
Yes, it does.
It means I got to him.
[chuckles]
Let's see what you can do with our boy wonder here.
New talent.
[chuckles]
A stranger will open up new opportunities this morning
and it's up to you to follow through.
It's my horoscope this morning.
I swear.
Are there any other strangers around?
Well, yeah.
Not any of that are quite as interesting.
You mean astrologically?
Of course.
[laughs]
- I'm Mal Ogden. - Doe Riley.
- Toby Thomson. - Hi, Toby.
Hi.
Now, what do you suppose these
new opportunities would be?
Well, uh, considering that we met here
I suppose we have something to do
with the futurity, Saturday, over at Kentucky Meadows.
Do you all have a horse in it?
Oh, no. We're just fans.
How about your friend up there you were talking to?
Strictly a spectator.
What about you? Are you an owner?
[chuckles]
I guess if I could get credit
for what I have dropped on some of these nags
I think, yeah.
[both laugh]
What do you do for a living, Mal?
[chuckles]
I'm sorry, I'm, uh..
Nobody has asked me that in five or six years.
I guess you really are a stranger, aren't you?
I, uh.. I got a little recording studio
and I manage to get a record down there once in a while.
Am I supposed to be impressed?
Well, it's kind of a trip that you're not.
Listen, maybe you all would like to come on over there later
see the setup, have a little drink with us or something?
A special occasion?
Oh, well, my Hank Dunlop record just went over a million
so we're gonna have ourselves a little liquid picnic.
Oh, what do you say, Toby?
Yeah, sounds like it might be a couple of chuckles.
You're on.
Great. I'll give you a card here.
And, uh, your friend that left
he can come along too.
My boss don't ever go to parties.
Well, maybe if I was to invite him personally.
I mean, just give me his name, and I'll--
It'll be waste of time, Mal.
See you tonight.
Alright.
Buh-bye.
[chuckles]
[instrumental music]
You understand you have the right to remain silent
and anything you say can be used against you.
And you have the right to an attorney if you wish.
What about the right to walk out?
That doesn't seem to be on here.
Heh.
Who was with you in the Murrells and the check fraud?
Murrells what? What is that?
Miss Randall, you've been identified there.
Okay, okay.
I knew I wasn't through losing on that hustle.
Those two..
I mean, they are bad.
They not only did me out of my share
they even split with my gold lyre.
Then for the capper..
...I got stuck with their hotel bill.
Set the rip-off of all time.
Where are they now?
No idea.
I wish I did.
Do you recognize any of these?
This one. Rex.
Comes up with the idea, and does most of the work.
What about the other man?
Toby. Toby Thomson.
That's what he calls himself.
And what does he do?
Mix with the charm.
I guess his main thing is to line up the command.
Somebody like me.
Where did you see them last?
Well, Rex split in Waynesboro after we ditched the car.
Toby and I went on to Augusta.
We were going to cool it there
and then fly down to Miami and meet with Rex.
You know, I believed it.
And what did happen?
I lost a shoe.
[instrumental music]
[jazz music]
Hey, Doe, how're you doing? So glad you could come.
Nice to see you, Toby. How're you doing?
Sorry, we're late.
Doesn't matter. You're here now, aren't you?
Lester, what are you doing standing around?
Can't you get these people a drink, man?
Yeah, Lester, let's get with it now, come on.
You know, Hank Dunlop was just here just a minute ago
and he had to run over to WGM to do a tape.
You just missed him by a little bit.
I may never recover.
Let me show you around here a little bit.
You know, I was still holding the hope out
that your mysterious boss might change his mind
and decide to join us.
Guess you couldn't talk him into it, huh?
He doesn't mind you, uh..
you know, spending time with Toby, so..
What is it you wanna know, Mal?
Just where you stand.
On my own size sevens.
Styled to order and paid for, by me.
You've been liberated?
It was never necessary.
I started out as my own person and stayed there.
This is for you.
From Mr. Thomson.
Oh, how thoughtful.
Uh, honey, why don't you do me a favor
and go and get Mr. Thomson and sort of show him around
give him a tour for me, would you?
Oh, sure. I'd be happy to.
- Thank you, baby. - Bye-bye.
After what you said, I guess that wouldn't be
too far out of line if I asked you
where you were staying, would I?
Well, if you are really the big number around here
I guess you already know.
Could it possibly be that you're at the Greybar Hotel
third floor, east?
I believe that Toby and your boss have the suite
right across the way.
Sounds like you have it all in order.
Well, yeah, but I don't know a thing about your boss.
I don't even know his name.
I mean, he must have the same reaction to hotel registrars
as he does to parties here.
Well, what-what sort of business is he in, exactly?
He's an investor.
Does he, ever by chance, uh, invest in the ponies?
Sometimes.
Uh, because you see
I need some expert advice in that area.
Sorry, he doesn't run a service.
He's a private investor.
I beg you pardon, uh..
Miss Riley.. Phone call.
Let me show you where it is.
There you go.
Hello?
Oh, yes, Mr. Kubek.
[laughs]
We're doing any good, baby?
To the best of my knowledge, yes, sir.
[laughs] You got a wonder board champion at the bit?
I was impressed with the work out.
[laughs]
Oh, well, listen
he's turned loose some go-go machine on me.
You may have to bail me out.
No. I wouldn't worry about that.
Well, you better drop the name again, just in case.
Yes, Mr. Kubek.
I understand.
Well, uh, what you figure about another half hour?
'Alright.'
Well, that's gonna be big. I'll talk to you later.
[laughing]
Come on now. Let's have a good time.
Can I pick him or can I pick him?
She was just on the phone with her boss.
Mr. Kubek.
- Steve Kubek? - Go and check it out.
[instrumental music]
[engine revving]
Yes, Art.
Lewis, I have the results of the name check
you wanted on Toby Thomson.
According to the confidence man file
he is probably identical
with a check artist named Kendall Tobias.
'His identification record leads back ten years.'
Mm-hmm. What about his associate?
One of his closest is a fence who was convicted with him
a few years ago, a man named Claude Lamar.
He was released about the same time as Tobias
and currently works in Nashville.
Alright, Art, we'll talk to him.
[instrumental music]
[knock at door]
[both laughing]
If it isn't the mysterious Mr. Kubek.
That party should have been over hours ago.
It was.
You should've seen this nutty little joint
we fell into out on Route 31.
I don't believe you two idiots.
You're out living it up when I'm sitting around here sweating
thinking maybe something went sour.
maybe they nailed you.
Not even a phone call!
Oh, I think our house mother is upset.
[both laugh]
You go to your room right now.
No, no, no. I've been invited for a nightcap.
We're still having one, aren't we?
You bet we are, honey.
Oh. Oh..
You and I are gonna have a little talk.
You bet we are, old buddy.
Doe, would you mind?
She is trying to use you against me
trying to job us, can't you see that?
Oh. That ain't it. The problem is you.
You hung up on her, and you can't admit it
and it's driving you bananas.
You got the message now?
Yeah.
I'm checking out.
Okay. Walk!
And take her with you.
Okay, hold it. Just a second now.
Just hold it.
Come on now. We're halfway to some real money.
I'm tired of being pushed around.
Okay, no more pushing around.
But let's not tear it up now.
Come on, will you? Ease off.
Pushing's over?
Pushing's over.
Equal partners?
Equal partners all the way.
Now put that stuff back.
I'm not finished yet.
And Doe is part of this deal, she stays.
Alright, she stays.
Anything else?
Yeah.
As far as the personal thing with Doe is concerned
I got that carved out, you dig?
No contest.
[instrumental music]
Inspector Erskine, FBI. Special Agent Colby.
I go strictly by the book these days.
I-I mean, not even a traffic ticket.
On the straight, a 100 percent.
You can ask anybody in the city.
Now, what can I do for you?
Where is Toby Thomson?
Beats me, inspector.
We don't hang around together anymore.
Oh, look, I got nothing against Toby
but as long as he's working the other side of the street
sorry, I have no need for that kind of a friendship.
You know what I mean?
What's he up to?
Inspector, I just got through tellin' you
I left the past behind me.
And you just got through telling me that Thomson hasn't.
How did you know that?
Well, he called me like
I don't know, three, four days ago.
- Where is he? - Well, some place in Georgia.
He didn't name the town.
Why did he call you?
He wanted me to fence something for him.
A rock. Of course he didn't exactly put it in those words.
He scammed in code that he'd, uh..
run across a rare geological find
and, you know, would I consider using my good offices
and so forth.
And what did you tell him?
I told him that I've been out of touch
with the scientific community.
Did you refer him to someone else?
I most certainly did not, inspector.
Well, I, I might have passed along some gossip I heard
and he might have taken it as a reference.
Go on.
Well, I mentioned Kurt Milkey.
Word has it that he's the one you wanna see these days
if you're trying to lay off something fairly big.
And where can we find him?
Well, I think he's based in Memphis.
Of course, he gets around a whole lot.
He goes where the action is.
That's what you told Thomson?
Well, that's all I could tell him.
But, now, he might have guessed
that if you wanna get in touch with Milkey
you put out the word that you're looking
and, uh, then he comes and finds you.
Is that all you know?
Inspector, that's it.
Honest.
[instrumental music]
But even the finest Rockefeller sauce won't do it
if your oysters isn't fresh.
Well, it should be, I had 'em flown in
from New Orleans this morning for you.
You've always not indulged in all of your guests?
Hmm, no. Just the women.
Very few that I particularly admire.
How many are a few?
Well, at the moment, three.
And the answer to your next question
this is, uh, one of the others.
Girl on the beach.
She is different-looking.
But I think I can stand the competition.
And the other one?
Oh, my childhood sweetheart.
Lady luck, I think you know her.
Matter of fact, I think you travel around with her
all the time, you and your boss.
I can't imagine where you get your information, Mal.
Oh, I have a contact here and there.
Uh, your boss, Mr. Kubek.
Steve Kubek, I believe his name is.
You'll have to get yourself some new contacts.
Oh, come on, honey, I know who he is, I know what he does.
He watches the horse races like a replay.
He's got the winner going in or he don't go in.
Now...that's my kind of handicapper.
I want to meet him.
If my boss was this person
why would you need him?
Why is it so important to you?
It just is, that's all.
I have to make one good, big k*lling and that's all
I'll, I'll be satisfied.
You put me together with him, Doe.
Do it before Saturday.
I told you the other night, Mal.
He doesn't deal with partners.
I think he will this time.
I mean, suppose the racing commissioner
were to learn that he was in town to have you all
placing bets for him on the futurity.
I'll wait for your call.
[dramatic music]
We're waiting for Kurt Milkey, inspector.
One of our informants is sure he's in town with Ferelle
that Benning and Thompson picked up in South Carolina.
'He's going to be getting rid of her here tonight.'
Do you have a warrant?
Yes, the US Attorney's office okayed an arrest
if the buy goes through.
[man on radio] 'Unit Two to Unit Three.'
- Go ahead. - Still no sign on Milkey.
But there's someone waiting here.
It could be the buyer.
We'll join you.
[dramatic music]
Take a look, Ted.
Yes, that's Milkey over there.
FBI! Stand where you are!
[music continues]
Come on, let's have the ring, please?
[g*nf*re]
Throw down the g*n.
I'll get the ambulance.
[instrumental music]
[knock at door]
- Hey, Mal! - How you doing, Toby?
- Good to see you, man. - Great.
- Mal. - Hi, sweetie.
Mr. Kubek, this is the young man I was telling you about.
'Mal Ogden.'
You certainly are a difficult man to get a hold of.
It's a great pleasure to meet you, Mr. Kubek.
Well, you've been making a lot of noise of yourself out there.
Well, when I wanna get in a door
I usually just keep around knocking till it falls down.
[chuckles]
I want you to place a bet for me.
I don't mess around with any small stuff.
Neither do I.
I was thinking of something fairly big.
Like $75,000. How does that grab you?
Alright.
If I take the action..
Then you take, uh, 30% off the top.
[laughs]
Are you kidding?
The punk at the newsstand, he takes 20%.
Let's not complicate it.
You take half, and leave the other half.
That's pretty steep.
If a kid with a guitar walked into your studio
wanting to cut a record
what kind of a deal would you give him?
'He'd be lucky to walk away with 10%, right?'
Alright, I guess we can split it down the middle.
If you're gonna write paper, get lost.
You want me to get it up for you in cash?
If you don't, forget it.
[scoffs]
No problem.
Toby.
Why don't you tag along with your friend here?
He's got some business over at his bank.
You call me after the race tomorrow.
We'll set up the pay-off.
I'll say.
Well..
What's next on our agenda?
I'm toying around with a few ideas.
Yeah?
So am I.
But all of mine call for just two operators.
One man, one woman.
Who's the lucky fellow?
Chemistry was there the first minute we met.
You knew it and I knew it.
No point in kidding ourselves forever, is there?
Don't you have any guilt feelings
about leaving Toby hanging?
A couple maybe.
'Cause I'll just have to learn to live with them.
Yeah.
You'll help me forget, won't you?
I'll do my best, baby.
[instrumental music]
Where did you get the ring?
I got nothing to say to you.
What kind of a deal did Benning and Thomson make with you?
I bought it from a couple of guys I never saw before.
You see him here?
Not in this bunch.
Take another look.
Well, what do you know, there they are.
Benning and Thomson.
Where did you meet them?
Right here in Nashville, over at the Greybar.
I think it was this room 618.
[instrumental music]
Did you get it?
Yeah, you ever know me to fail?
Oh!
Well, that was sweet of him to throw in
that pretty tote bag.
Yeah, he is a sweet kid.
[chuckles]
Uh, where's Doe?
Well, she's back at the hotel.
I told her I was taking a steam.
Now, wait just a minute, old buddy.
We agreed she was staying.
But she had the notion that you weren't.
Call it a proposal.
May I live the rest of my days on Devil's Island
if that isn't the absolute truth?
Ah, they turned Devil's Island into a resort.
You thought I didn't know that?
[chuckles]
I'll tell you something else you weren't countin' on.
I believe you.
I think Doe did give you a pitch.
What makes you so sure?
Well, she pulled the same number on me.
[both laugh]
I think a drink's in order.
- I do too. - Alright.
I'll buy the first round.
Good. That's all we got time for.
[dramatic music]
They were here, inspector
but they checked out less than an hour ago.
Any idea where they went?
The doorman definitely remembers
putting Benning into a cab.
We're tracing that right now.
What about Thomson?
Well, the doorman thinks he may have left in another cab earlier
but he's not positive.
Excuse me, sir.
Agents just talked to the cab driver.
Benning was dropped off at the airport.
[instrumental music]
[woman over PA] 'Flight 603, non-stop to Houston.'
'Now boarding at gate 5.'
'Flight 603, non-stop to Houston.'
'Now boarding at gate 5.'
You forgot to tell me the steam bath was in Houston.
You know, I tried to call you, Doe
but, well, you weren't in your room.
- Oh. - Yes.
So, uh, then we left a message at the hotel desk.
Oh.
Did you also leave my share of the proceeds?
Now, I know you probably did.
But I can't seem to convince..
Oh, I'm sorry, you haven't met.
Craig and Jeff.
My two closest friends.
They're always looking out for me.
Let's get some air.
Outside.
Please, I insist.
Well..
Get in.
Now, look, wait just a minute, now you got all that money
all that cash, what more do you want?
I said, get in. We're not through with you guys yet.
Alright. Doesn't look like we have a choice, do we?
Oh, my hip.
[grunting]
- Away it goes, baby. - I'm sorry.
Remember, as long as you got friends, you're rich.
Ha ha.
[tires screech]
[instrumental music]
Alright, hold it. Put your hands on the hood and feet apart.
FBI!
[dramatic music]
[g*nsh*t]
[g*nf*re]
[instrumental music]
Oh, well, look who's here.
My old buddy.
You will be alright, aren't you?
Oh, yeah, I'll be alright.
But I'm afraid they're gonna be putting us away
for a long, long time to come.
Oh, now, come on, and to each life
a little rain's got to fall.
Oh, h*-h*, come on.
And to think that I teamed up with a..
a con boy like you.
[chuckles]
Well, take care of yourself.
Alright. You too.
Well, inspector..
...it was all his idea.
'You want me to help you build a case against him?'
I'll make a deal with you.
You're a few years late for that.
[door closes]
Well, it was worth a try.
[Marvin Miller] Rex Benning recovered from his wounds.
And along with Toby Thomson and Vanessa Ferelle
was convicted of interstate transportation
of stolen property.
Benning, Thomson, Evan Stack, and Kurt Milkey
were also found guilty of assaulting federal officers.
Milkey was also convicted of receiving stolen property.
Benning, Thomson, and Doe Riley were tried in state court
on bungle charges involving Mal Ogden.
Craig Sherman and Jeff Hewett were tried for robbery
and conspiracy to commit m*rder.
[theme music]
