08x25 - Night of the Long Knives

Post by bunniefuu »

Go ahead, One.

The counselor just drove out the west gate.

Yeah, we got him. We'll stay with him.

There's an out-of-state car just pulling in now.

'Illinois plates.'

Stand by.

You remember Ernie Ligot?

Yeah, an extortion case you handled several years ago.

That's the one.

He's just joined the party.

You know, the counselor must be on to something

or he wouldn't walk out on the wedding.

That's right.

You better have him found.

Are you trying to get me k*lled?

- No. - Then pull yourself together.

[sobs] I can't.

I can't.

Look, I don't want Uncle Frank to die.

Or Mr. Faber.

Or you, Jerry. You know what could happen.

Please, you've got to stop it.

Oh, it's too late. It's too late.

The wheels are in motion already.

Tell me. Where have I seen you before?

I don't think we've ever met.

I think we have.

[male narrator] "The FBI."

A Quinn Martin production.

Starring Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Also starring Philip Abbott..

...William Reynolds.

With guest stars, Alex Cord..

...Cal Bellini..

...Donna Baccala.

Tonight's episode, Night Of The Long Knives.

[g*nsh*t]

[g*nsh*t]

What are you two doing here?

Thought you didn't like duck hunting.

The boss is comin' back tomorrow.

- So? - We held another vote.

He dies.

You don't really think we can take over, do you?

Not we.

You see, you're the one that talked us

out of hitting him on the first vote.

Alright, so I change my vote.

But not your mind.

We still think you're the boss' man.

So we're gonna have to leave you here.

What are you talking about? This is crazy.

You're gonna have an accident.

It's best if you look like you stumbled and fell.

[clicks g*n]

Alright, turn.

[grunts]

[g*nsh*t]

- I better make sure. - Hold it!

Let's get out of here.

[theme music]

[male narrator] The wounding of Stanley Arthur Kyler

a key figure in the criminal organization

came to the attention of the FBI

only hours before the bureau had obtained

a warrant for his arrest

charging Kyler with violations

of the interstate transportation

of stolen property statute.

Inspector Lewis Erskine who was coordinating the case

at the bureau headquarters arrived in New York

to spearhead the investigation.

[Tom] 'You have the right to remain silent.'

'Anything you say can be used against you.'

And you have the right to an attorney if you wish.

How would I know about securities?

Five hundred thousand dollars worth of stocks were stolen

from a Wall Street brokerage house two weeks ago.

That's tragic.

Some of them surfaced at the mercantile bank

in Trenton last Wednesday.

Well, you pledged them as collateral

against a $100,000 loan.

And you've been identified.

[coughs] Is that right?

Anything else?

Yes, you had an accomplice with you at the bank.

He acted as your broker.

Who is he?

Your friends nearly got you, Kyler.

Next time, they won't leave any loose ends.

It was an accident. I tripped.

And shot yourself?

I got nothin' else to say.

[coughs]

I'll get the doctor.

E-easy. The doctor will be here right away.

[coughs] They didn't just want me.

They wanted all of them.

They're gonna k*ll all three.

[sighs]

Kyler's still alive.

- Where does that leave us? - Maybe dead.

Yeah, well, if hasn't talked by now, he probably won't.

Deep coma?

[chuckles] Yeah.

That means he's on his way out.

- We're alright. - Now we go ahead as planned?

As planned.

[laughs] It's a shame Kyler won't be here for your wedding.

Or the reception.

I gotta get upstairs.

There's a lot to get done before the boss gets back.

Listen, Rollie.

'You better understand the boss is plenty upset.'

I mean, he's not too happy about the way

those last stocks were moved.

You better stay out of sight down here

until after the wedding.

Then maybe he'll be in a mood to forgive anything.

Alright, but let me get a couple hours of air first.

Okay.

Who's out there?

Nobody important.

- Anybody else out there? - Your tailor.

He wants another fitting on your wedding suit.

Hmm.

That independent we took over in Orange..

- Slots operator. - Yeah.

He wants his machines back.

He refuses to let us service them.

He needs a lecture.

Let's give him a new face.

May I advice you?

Hold. Please.

Please do, counselor.

It's a good sign that this independent was angry.

We just robbed him of his business.

If he were not angry, I would worry.

This last act of defiance was just his way of saving face.

Talk to him. It's courtesy.

But firmness.

'And I'm sure everything will be alright.'

You're right as usual.

'Thank you, counselor.'

I need a lot more experience.

The boss shouldn't have appointed me in his absence.

No, he was right.

Not many of our young people will listen and then learn.

I appreciate that.

[counselor] 'I'll dismiss the rest of the people.'

Something about old men.

Hmm.

Starrett. Can you live with that?

He's my uncle.

[laughs] That's not what I asked.

Yeah.

[male #1] 'Willard and the boss.'

That ought to do it.

Have a cigar.

This anyway to treat your future father-in-law's things?

Well, he won't be around to enjoy it.

Isn't there any other way to, uh--

No, there isn't.

The organization comes first.

Look at him.

Fat and soft at a touch.

There are whole new fields to be tapped.

'New racial connections to be established.'

A million things.

It's a whole new ballgame.

They won't retire.

They'll have to be retired.

All for the organization.

Ed, who's, uh, who's gonna be the organization?

Whoever has the guts to take it.

How do you think the boss got in this chair?

Waiting for somebody to hand it to him?

No. There's only one way.

You create a vacuum by getting rid of the right people

and then you step in.

'First, I marry his daughter'

so the relatives don't get upset I'm an outsider.

And then I get rid of him.

[telephone rings]

- Yes. - Eddie.

Uh, I hate to bother you.

I know this is silly, but I just wanted to call you

and tell you I love you.

[chuckles] I can't think of a better reason.

Tomorrow's really the big day.

I can't, I can't believe it.

I know. Believe it, honey.

'Are you sure that daddy will make it here in time?'

Are you kidding?

He wouldn't miss it.

I'm so looking forward to seeing him.

- Aren't you? - I can hardly wait.

Bye, honey.

- That's the one. - Are you certain?

Absolutely.

He came in with that other man

who pledged the stolen securities.

Alright, thanks very much.

[Arthur] 'Kyler and Roland Cardwell.'

Cardwell's a known associate of Kyler.

They both belong to the same arm of the criminal organization.

The US Attorney's authorized a warrant on Cardwell.

Caldwell could've been involved in the sh**ting of Kyler.

An informant says he's one of Haynes' men.

We're surveilling all his, uh, known hangouts, Mr. Ward.

So far, no luck.

Any further information

on the executions Kyler mentioned?

Not yet.

Art, you know Haynes has been filling in

for Arnold Faber as boss.

Well, tomorrow he's getting married to Faber's daughter.

- It's gonna be a big wedding. - Mm-hmm.

And I suppose, just about every important member

of the organization will be there.

I think our best chance of getting Cardwell

is to put somebody inside ahead of time.

Well, that will give us a good opportunity

to develop some intelligence information.

Any ideas?

They're using a very fashionable catering service.

Not one of their fronts.

I could talk to the owner, see if he'll go along.

Alright, let me know what you find out

and I'll speak to the director.

Alright, bring the other tables.

- How's it going? - Uh, splendidly, Mr. Haynes.

Just splendidly.

Well, let me give you a little piece of advice.

Everything better be perfect.

Food, wine, the works.

One fork out of place and you're in trouble.

I understand. Uh, I wonder

if I might have a copy of the seating arrangement

What do you mean?

Uh, well, uh, I only have an estimate

of the number of guests.

Uh, it would help if I knew exactly

how many and their names.

So that I might, uh, arrange place cards.

There's no place cards.

[telephone rings] You see, we're a very..

...tight family.

Everybody knows where they belong.

Yes, of course.

Call for the maitre d'.

- The chef wants you. - Excuse me.

Hello.

Supplies are all set, Mr. Statten.

Everything alright at your end?

Uh, yes, fine.

Um, I'll get back to you if I need anything.

- Daddy. - Lorrie.

[laughter]

- Boss, it's good to see you. - Good to see you too.

Welcome home, boss.

- It's nice to be home. - How do you feel?

I feel fine. Thank you.

Oh.

Walk with me.

You've done a fine job, Eddie.

Nothing but good reports.

Except for Cardwell. Where is he?

I'll find him. You leave it to me.

Sure.

You even kept the place up.

Everything's in order.

Fresh and clean.

Nice. Just like it should be.

Where's Kyler?

Uh, well, you know Kyler w-when he goes hunting.

Like the time he shot the cow for a deer.

And almost blew the head of the farmer who was milking him.

[laughs]

[coughs]

Hey, give me some water. Water!

[coughs]

You alright?

Come on, come on.

[clears throat]

- You okay? - Uh-huh, yeah.

Thank you.

Who's that one?

He's the maitre d for the catering company.

Why didn't we use [indistinct]

Well, your daughter, she only wanted the best.

You know, uh, real uptown society.

You didn't use good judgement, Eddie.

With our own, it's always safer, you know that.

Jerry.

Won't you tell me what it is?

What are you talking about?

I've been watching you coming apart.

I've heard you in your sleep.

There's nothing wrong.

Nothing.

Please don't lie to me.

You've been ready to explode for weeks.

Honey, why don't you let me help you?

No, I can't.

It's business.

I know.

It must be terrible to have no one to talk to.

- Helen? - Hmm.

In my sleep..

...what did you hear?

Over and over..

...the boss.

Uncle Frank.

Yeah.

Yeah.

A blue Fordor.

Massachusetts plates.

'Looks like the Ferguson brothers are at Boston.'

'Both with wives. No children.'

A second car.

Alright, thank you.

The second car, two male occupants.

Identities uncertain.

Fordor black sedan.

New York license, 5F 9836.

That makes 24 guests.

Fifteen identified.

New York DMV reports a Continental

license 5F 9836

registered to Norman Scott Joslin.

Norman Scott Joslin.

Known alias of Alex Josephson, underboss, Philadelphia.

Sixteen identified.

We've checked informants.

There's still no word out on any killings.

Except for what Kyler told us.

Any improvement in his condition?

Still in a coma.

And no sign of Cardwell.

A lot depends on what's happening

inside that estate right now.

[laughter]

[indistinct chatter]

Gentlemen. Gentlemen.

I want to offer congratulations

on the marriage of the daughter of my friend

and to thank him for permitting the pleasure

of my presence here this evening.

Oh, thank you. Thank you, that's wonderful.

The supply of chateau is running dry.

You better call.

Oh, dear and I'm afraid we're out of stock.

Let me see.

Of course, if you have some in your cellar--

No. N-no, there's nothing down there.

Very well, I'll, uh, I'll call my office

and, uh, see what I can do.

[indistinct chatter]

Good shot.

I hear they're all upstairs except Willard.

He's in a New York hospital.

Gall bladder operation.

- Not so good. - It's no good at all.

k*lling the rest of them won't help if he's still around.

Is there any security?

One bodyguard.

It shouldn't be too hard to reach him.

I'm sending a man out now.

Where's the counselor?

I haven't seen him around in a couple of hours.

I don't know.

Blood and death.

Everlasting power struggles.

And now a new one. The usual.

The young ready to devour the old.

My loyalty's the boss.

But how would he believe me? I have no proof.

Haynes has his ear.

I would be put down as just a..

...senile old man.

It could mean death.

And I'm so deeply afraid.

Because I know.

And because of this life I've led..

...I will never be allowed to join you.

[sobs]

Go ahead, 1.

The counselor just drove out the west gate.

Yeah, we got him. We'll stay with him.

Does his leaving have any special significance?

I think something's ready to break.

Have you seen Cardwell yet?

No, but the basement seems to be out of bounds.

I'm trying to figure out a way to get down there.

There's an out-of-state car just pulling in now.

'Illinois plates.'

Stand by.

You remember Ernie Ligot?

Yeah, an extortion case you handled several years ago.

That's the one.

He's just joined the party.

What are you doing here?

Haynes wants to know if Willard's alright.

What are you doing? You're supposed to be guarding him.

The doctors are operating on him now.

Figured I'd be comfortable till they got him up to his room.

Haynes sent a gift.

Give me a hand, huh?

[indistinct chatter]

[crowd cheering]

Hey.

Thank you for you being here today.

The counselor's not to be found.

I've looked for him everywhere, everywhere. H-e's gone.

You can't just take it easy.

Excuse me, sir.

Everything to your satisfaction?

Yeah, yeah, fine. Thank you.

You know the counselor must be on to something

or he wouldn't walk out on the wedding.

That's right.

You better have him found.

You wait tables around here?

Uh, may I help you?

I got a dead soldier in my hand. Can I have yours?

Yes.

I know you.

Where do I know you? Tell me that.

I can't imagine, sir.

Maybe I'm wrong.

Did you run a place in Jersey City?

Excuse me.

Does he remember you?

Not exactly. It was quite a while ago.

Mr. Ward's very concerned about your safety.

He thinks you ought to get out of here now.

I will. I just wanna make sure the catering crew leaves first.

NK-7 to Control.

We know he's here. Tell him to come out.

It's alright, Frank.

I don't wanna cause you any trouble.

What do you want?

Haynes sent us to get some flowers for the wedding.

He figured this is one of the places you might go.

Let him go. He knows nothing about anything.

He goes with you.

Hold it! FBI!

[g*nsh*t]

[jazz music]

[indistinct chatter]

Why don't you go up and get ready?

We got a long trip ahead of us.

Yes. I'm dizzy.

Too much champagne.

Two whole glasses.

Alright. You go up and take a little nap.

Come on, you just..

Now you go ahead up. There's no hurry.

We've got the rest of our lives.

Go ahead.

Love you.

Okay, go in and help them up to their rooms.

Little tip for you and your men.

- Thank you, sir. - Now you can pack up and leave.

Alright, thank you. The party's over.

Eddie, have the saxophone to stay.

- Uh.. - Go ahead.

Play something with melody.

You know, that's the trouble with songs today.

No melody.

[musical "As Time Goes By"]

- May I? - Yes, please.

Dance.

Excuse me, Uncle Frank.

Everybody gets emotional at weddings.

I'll see what's wrong.

Are you trying to get me k*lled?

- No. - Then pull yourself together.

[sobs] I can't.

I can't.

I don't want Uncle Frank to die.

Or Mr. Faber.

Or you, Jerry. You know what could happen.

Please, you've got to stop it.

I can't. I can't. Don't you see that?

Find a way to stop Haynes.

No, it's too late. It's too late.

The wheels are in motion already.

- No. - Oh, shh.

Tell me. Where have I seen you before?

I don't think we've ever met.

I think we have..

...Inspector Erskine.

They tried to k*ll you.

Why do you feel you owe them anything?

In the organization, we take an oath of silence.

I can't break it even though..

Even though what?

Men who have been my lifelong friends are to die.

- What friends? - It's too late.

- You can't stop it. - Maybe we can if you help us.

I've explained my situation.

You haven't explained why you ran out.

I didn't want to be present.

The reasons were practical. I was afraid.

Afraid?

And dissolution?

How long do you intend being intimidated?

There's to be a purge.

Do you know the hitman?

Haynes, Sessions and Cardwell.

They wanna remove the old ones and take over.

- Is Cardwell on the estate? - 'Yeah.'

Is there a timetable for the executions?

Probably about now.

The celebration should be having its effect on the old ones.

Give me a list of the victims, please.

McGregor.

Yes, put him on.

The counselor talked.

He gave us the names of the intended victims.

Are they all there at the estate?

All except Willard. He's in the hospital.

I've notified security there and the police.

No, no. Please, please.

No, no, no, no.

Please, please, no.

'Please, please.'

[thud]

Alright, alright.

How many are there, Tom?

There are two of them, Mr. Ward. Starrett's boys.

Joe Peck and Arnold Locke.

Wait a minute.

They're being turned back.

That's the second car to be refused.

Yes, sir. Looks like they're sealing off the estate.

The guards are expecting me.

- I'm going in now. - Alright, Tom.

Make sure you've got sufficient manpower with you.

There's no telling what you'll run into.

Ed, this is crazy.

You can't k*ll an FBI man.

You can't let him out of here.

It's got to be me they're after.

What Sessions says about k*lling him makes sense.

He's been around long enough to hear too much.

Put it away.

No, he's not leaving!

[muffled g*nsh*t]

Now it looks like I've got no choice.

Well, we better get the rest of the show on the road.

Stand back!

What's the matter?

Alright, turn around. Turn around.

Jerry, why? You can't do this.

Don't beg.

Let's go.

Downstairs.

You-you've got to stop them.

You can't let them k*ll him.

Please.

FBI. Stay right where you are.

Put your hands on top of your head. Turn around.

Where are they?

The study.

Come on. Come on.

Come on. Come on.

Come on.

Why don't you get it over with?

Don't push, Eddie. I think I deserve that much.

See. With respect.

With respect.

How do you get to the basement?

Well, through here some place.

But I don't know how to open this.

You realize this place is completely surrounded.

I think you're bluffing.

But even if you do have men outside

I'll take my chances gettin' out of here.

Then let them find me and prove who k*lled who.

You're in over your head, Eddie.

If you do pull this off, you'll need me to clear you

with the organization.

If I'll let you go, you'll be the first one

to put a b*llet in my head.

Not if we make a deal.

After all, Lorrie's all I've got.

If something happens to you, it would k*ll her.

So we make a deal, you and I.

Oh, I won't kid you

and say you'll stay in the business

but, uh, at least you'll be alive.

You got a way out of here?

There's a tunnel at the end of this cellar.

I don't think they'll have it covered.

Alright, deal.

Finish him.

No, hitting means out. I told you--

I made a deal with you. With him, I can't.

You're not married to his daughter.

'You think he's gonna let you live?'

Get him!

Ed, w-what he says makes sense.

[gasps] Somebody help me, please.

Come on, come on, get up. Come on.

Hit him!

[g*nshots]

Freeze.

Put your hands up.

Put your hands on the bar.

Ed?

Ed.

What did you do?

N-never mind.

I-I don't wanna know.

Why did it have to end like this?

[male narrator] Arnold Faber, Edward Haynes and Jeryl Sessions

along with Roland Cardwell

and a number of Faber's other confederates

including Stanley Kyler

were convicted of conspiracy

and interstate transportation of stolen property.

Haynes' associates were also convicted

in state court of attempted m*rder

and in federal court of assaulting federal officers.

[theme music]
