False alarm, Mr. Davis.
Right model, right color, wrong people. Sorry, inspector.
Well, so am I, captain.
I didn't believe you, you know, on the phone
about blowing the deal.
You sounded tough, but..
...I think you're a phony.
There's a guy laying on a slab

Just keep it up and you'll join them.

You stuck it to me, Cauldwell.
Look, I figured that deal was unlocked.
You know, I'm givin' it to you straight.
Well, what unlocked it?
I left New York less than five hours ago.
- My buyers backed off. - Keep moving.
Look, I know ten guys who wanna jump at a chance
to get those stones.
You gotta give me a day or two to put it together.
A day or two? I don't even have an hour.
I told you, there's a guy sitting on my tail.
He's been tracking me since I pulled the job off.
[sighing]
What about you?
[laughing]
Me? You're dreaming.
Where would I come up with a million?
[clanking]
You set me up.
I put in a solid year planning this job.
Sleeve job, you told me. Candy from a baby.
Well, I risked my neck. I k*lled a man.
Because of your promises.
Look, buddy. Sometimes things go off the track a little bit.
[sighing]
[grunting]
Now, you're gonna get me back on the track, Cauldwell.
Now, who do I unload these stones on?
Now, right now!
Alright, take it easy.
I know a guy out of town. He can handle it.
- Who? - Arnie Cane.
Works out of a bar in San Diego.
Six Twenty Club.
He's a, he's a go-between for Mexican money.
You call him. You call him!
Alright.
[sighing]
Yeah.
Alright, I'll tell him.
Alright, Cane expects your call when you get to San Diego.
- Hi, can I help you? - Yes.
The next flight to San Diego, please. One way.
- Flight 34 leaves in 20 minute. - That's great.
You go right ahead.
[woman on PA] 'Attention, please.'
'Last call for passengers of flight 17.'

[male narrator] On the afternoon of December 19th
James Alan Danzer, a 37-year-old American
employed by a Belgian diamond firm
stole a single-engine plane
from the Phoenix Arizona airport
and flew it into Southern California.
With the engine damaged by g*nf*re
Danzer was forced to crash-land.
The FBI was alerted
and Los Angeles special agent-in-charge
Winston Rogers
launched an immediate investigation.
One week before stealing the plane
Danzer was the subject of an urgent Interpol bulletin
reporting the theft of over a million and a half dollars
worth of uncut diamonds.
Instead of delivering them to a dealer
in Amsterdam, Holland
Danzer shot and k*lled the security guard
accompanying him.
Inspector Lewis Erskine
and Special Agent Chris Daniels
were assigned to coordinate their investigation
with Winston Rogers.
Here's the diamond we found on the plane.
Well, the pilot and the ticket clerk in Phoenix
both identified Danzer from the Interpol photograph.
We know Danzer boarded a flight out of Amsterdam last Friday
and cleared New York Customs Saturday morning.
Where did the Dutch police find the security guard's body?
In Danzer's hotel room in Amsterdam, Saturday morning.
So he have plenty of time
to cover his tracks once he hit New York.
Well, not completely.
A tall, dark complected man was seen chasing Danzer
out of the terminal on to the airfield.
Now, he's the one who fired at the plane.
Could be Danzer was pulling a double-cross.
Trying to edge out a partner.
He had an attache case in the terminal.
The g*nman must have known what was in it.
[exhales deeply] Yeah, that's what puzzles me.
Why didn't he get rid of the stones in New York?
Being in the diamond business, he must have dozens of contacts.
Maybe one of them is in Phoenix.
Anyway, you better alert your informants.
He maybe trying to fence those stones
right now in Los Angeles.
[engine rumbling]
[indistinct chatter]
Can I help you with anything, sir?
Oh, yes, uh, black coffee, please.
[music continues]
[coins clinking]
[coin clinks]
Six Twenty Lounge?
I wanna speak to Arnie Cane.
Cheese burger and coffee for me.
Sure.
[music continues]
[coin clinking]
Hey, what about the coffee?
Oh, yeah, sorry.
[engine revving]
I'm sure they have a phone. I'll make it quick.
Don't worry, Marion. We have plenty of time.
[music continues]
Hey, mister.
Hey, mister, come here!
[g*nsh*t]
Marion!
Marion!
[dramatic music]
Marion, what happened?
[engine revving]
Claire!
Oh, my God. Where is Marion?
Hey, you're blind.
Please let me out of here. Please let me out..
Hey! Hey! Come back here!
- No! Oh, no! - Are you crazy?
Shut up!
Have you got any vision?
'Answer me!'
I've been totally blind since I was six years old.
Look, I don't know who you are or what you've done.
I couldn't even tell anybody what you look like.
- Knock it off. - No..
Look, I have a husband. I have two little children.
They're gonna be frantic if I don't--
I don't wanna know anything about you.
Not even your name. You understand?
Listen, if you want, if you want money
you-you can have..
You can have my money and the.. The car.
T-take the car and just
just, please, just let me out
and I swear I won't call the police.
- I swear. - I know you won't.
'Cause you're staying with me.
I'm gonna need you, in case we get stopped by the police.
I'm sorry you're blind.
I'm sorry you got caught in this.
But if I have to, I'll k*ll ya.
Well, stay with him. Right now, he's our only link to Danzer.
And let me know the minute you have anything.
Nothing on the other man at the airport.
Well, according to the identification division
Danzer doesn't have a record.
I bet you, he was approached, spoon-fed
and told where to deliver the stones in the States.
Well, if that's true, why didn't he hand them over
to the Phoenix cowboy at the airport?
Why the one-way ticket to San Diego?
You got me on both counts.
Unless the deal blew.
[door opens]
Call just came in from the Corona del Mar police.
A man fitting Danzer's description
shot a highway patrolman, stole a car
and took the woman passenger hostage.
He was heading towards San Diego.
They put on an APB and set up roadblocks.
Oh, yeah, the woman's blind.
We need a chopper.
It'll be warmed up by the time you reach the pad.
[dramatic music]
Ah!
- Wanna live? - Yeah.
Where's Danzer?
I don't know.
[g*n c*ck]
San Diego.
I sent him to a man named Arnie Cane.
Six Twenty Lounge.
The diamonds?
He's got 'em.
One word of this to anyone, Cauldwell..
...I'll be back for you.
[music continues]
[glass shattering]
Whoa!
[screaming]
I already k*lled one man today, and maybe that cop!
[panting]
Nothing's workin' out.
Nothing is working out!
Well, I'm gonna make it work out.
I'm gonna make it all come together.
Now, if you give me one more problem..
...if you get in my way..
...so help me
I'm gonna put you away.
[dramatic music]
Now, you come on.
[groaning]
[instrumental music]
We got a long walk.
[instrumental music]
[engine revving]
False alarm, Mr. Davis.
Right model, right color, wrong people. Sorry, inspector.
Well so am I, captain.
He's probably switched cars by now.
Yeah, that model's a classic. It would be easy to spot.
Well, now, the photos on Danzer have been circulating
for less than an hour.
They might give us a lead.
We've got a positive on the APB, captain.
A night-watchman in a salvage yard
on Nathan and Crescent
just reported the T-Bird abandoned.
Let's go.
[instrumental music]
[knocking on door]
- Who is it? - I got your order.
Oh, say, they were fresh out of roast beef.
I got you a ham and cheese. That's $7.50 with the leg.
- Right. Keep it. - Oh, no.
Keep it!
Cane.
Arnie Cane! I wanna talk to him!
Who? I can't hear you.
Yeah, yeah, Cane? Yeah. Cane!
Hey, Cane, telephone!
Cane.
Yeah.
Oh, right. Yeah, I talked to Cauldwell.
Uh, how do I know the stuff's
as good as he says?
Cauldwell saw the merchandise!
It's exactly as it's advertised. It's perfect quality!
Half a million.
That's 50 percent under the market.
Well, I'll need a little time to set it up.
- A couple of days. - Oh, no. Now!
I want cash and I want a way out of the country
by tomorrow night or it's no deal.
Cauldwell blew it. I'm not takin' any more chances.
You just sweat a little bit for your lousy ten percent.
Alright. Alright.
Don't blow your cool.
[chuckles]
Hey, I think I can swing it. You got a deal.
Now, I'll get back to you in a couple of hours.
Uh, where are ya?
Don't worry about it, I'll call you.
Uh, Cane, you tell your Mexican friends..
No games.
One hitch, and you just kissed this deal goodbye.
[groaning]
Coffee...sandwiches..
Right there in front of you.
- I know, but I'm not hungry. - You might as well eat.
There's no point in starving yourself.
Okay.
[sniffs]
What are you staring at me for?
I can't see you.
Why do you follow my every move?
I'm not so sure you can't see.
How does your husband, uh..
How does your husband live with you?
He loves me.
So do my children. They're not frightened of me.
Is that supposed to mean that I am?
You're forgetting, lady, I've got all the aces here.
Then why are you running so scared?
I can hear it, in every word, every move you make.
I don't know what you've done, but whatever it is
you're in way over your head.
Lady..
You better get off my back.
You put those on!
And you keep 'em on.
I didn't believe you, you know, on the phone
about blowing the deal.
You sounded tough, but..
...I think you're a phony.
You think so, huh?
Well, there's a guy laying on a slab
in the Amsterdam morgue now.
And that cop, who know different.
Now, why are you pushing me?
Juts keep it up and you'll join them.
I don't think you'll k*ll me.
You said yourself, you need me.
[laughs]
[gasps]
[instrumental music]
Here, you feel it.
[laughing]
That's a million and a half.
I'm staring a brand-new life right in the face..
...and you think I wouldn't k*ll you.
I think you're scared.
I think you're scared as I am.
Right.
Even blind, you can read me, huh?
Right, I've been running scared of everybody and everything.
But that's no different than it's been all my life.
See, I'm a nobody.
I'm a piece of background music nobody ever remembers.
But that's a half a million there.
It's all gonna be different now.
With half a million, I can buy anything I want.
I can buy a new life.
And I'm not gonna let you stand in my way, lady.
You understand?
[whimpering]
[inhales deeply]
[exhales]
You didn't hear the car drive in?
No, I was in the shed.
I had some music playing while I was on the phone
with my old lady.
Is that rear gate usually left open at night?
No. I opened that at about 7:30.
A load of junkers was due in at eight.
I spotted the T-Bird when the heaps came in.
You sure it wasn't there before?
Gives him a two-hour jump on us.
Lou. Call radio, Mr. Ward.
Excuse me.
Uh, yes, Arthur.
'Hold on, Lewis, there's something coming'
'on the teletype now.'
[teletype whirring]
"Gustav Becker.
"Age 38, Belgian.
"Former mercenary in the Congo.
No physical description or photograph."
According to the Belgian diamond firm
they hired Becker to track down Danzer
and recover the stones.
Now, that kind of pressure on Danzer
just might work to our advantage.
Force him out into the open.
Yes, and it might not. Thanks, Arthur.
Is Hillie Breslin still in town?
Well, he comes up for air now and then.
Lives loose, hard to find.
Well, get the word out. I want a meeting as soon as possible.
Go with the mass. Go with the mass, hombre.
Atta, boy.
[speaking foreign language]
He's like a bull. Boom.
You ain't buying no ballerina, I'm tellin' you.
He's a bum.
A piece of knocks.
How do I know he can act?
You want him to dive in the fifth?
He'll drop like a rock. Wham!
Until then, I'm going to give your boy a serious problem.
I'm telling you.
Yeah, you, uh, make sure he understands
that it's him that goes in the bin.
Alright.
Come on, you guys.
I said come on!
I want Danzer.
Never heard of him.
Now, Cauldwell tells me you're a liar.
Where is he?
I made a deal for him to cross the border.
With the diamonds?
'When?'
Tomorrow night.
I don't know where he is now. He..
He said he'd contact me tonight.
Here's $500
and my phone number.
Now, you call me as soon as you hear from him.
Five hundred dollars? I-I'm blowing ten grand by handing--
Considering the alternatives, Cane
you just inherited a fortune.
Now, you call me, fat man.
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
You're looking for straight facts, my man.
I can't do you no good.
But the "he say-she say" on the street
well, that's something else.
Alright, hit us with that.
Well, word is that Danzer's got a sweet deal in Mexico.
One of the local cats set it up.
- You know his name? - Arnie Cane.
Hangs out at the 620 Lounge.
Who is the contact on the Mexican side?
Could be one of a half a dozen dudes.
They all got heavy bread.
Especially for that high-class sparkle.
The last I heard, Sikunder was serving
You know who took over his fencing operation?
Boy out of Detroit. Gene Allen.
Got a groovy setup in Ensenada.
If I was laying odds
I'd say him.
The world sure looks clean from up here, don't it?
I'll contact the Mexican authorities.
In the meantime, put Cane under surveillance
and alert the border patrol.
Now, Cane. I want into Mexico now.
If not, I've gotta get me another boy.
This town's alive with cops looking for me.
Well, you're right about the heat.
I'll put you at some safe place till it's time to cross.
Hey, knock it off, will you, fellas?
Now, uh, where are you staying?
Marina Motel.
I'll send a car in ten minutes.
No, you stay there.
I'll call you in an hour and tell you where to meet me.
Come on.
Come on!
Come on.
Hey, cab!
Cab!
Taxi!
Hey, hey!
Come on.
[tires screeching]
[Danzer] 'Come on, you're alright. Come on, get up, you're not hurt.'
I'm sorry, lady.
Are you alright, huh? Are you okay?
Oh, my God. Mister, please help me.
Please call the police.
You're alright, nothing happened.
Hey!
Mister, listen to me. Oh!
Come on. Come on! Get in! Get in!
Right now. Get in the car!
Get in!
Get over there!
[dramatic music]
[instrumental music]
[Chris] 'The Ensenada police sent along his records with a mugshot.'
[sighs]
"Gene Allen, 37, US citizen.
"Ensenada resident since June, 1971.
"Four arrests for narcotics dealings, numbers operations
and receiving stolen merchandise."
He's got more pies than fingers.
Backing he's got, he shouldn't have any trouble
getting rid of those diamonds.
[sighs] Now, get me the Ensenada police. Captain Ortega, please?
If he did take Danzer's action
he's probably burning up the wires by now.
[instrumental music]
[tires screeching]
Good morning, sir.
Huh? Oh, sorry, mister, full up.
Excuse me, sir, I'm looking for a friend of mine.
I think he is staying here.
Oh, what's his name?
You know, it's embarrassing
but I, I have forgotten that.
He's a man in his 30s.
Dark hair, thin, and he was probably
carrying a black attache case.
'I would very much like to surprise him.'
House policy, no name, no room number.
Well, do you think you could make an exception?
And I don't take tips.
- What's his number? - One.. 104.
- Now, you show it to me. - One.. 104. Look..
It's down here.
[dramatic music]
Right..
Right here.
Now..
...where is he?
Mister, I don't know.
I didn't see him or the woman leave, I swear.
[music continues]
[tires squealing]
Did the hotel operator keep
a record of Allen's calls to Santiago?
Yes, yes, he did. Uh, I have them.
No. Hold on just a moment.
Yes, here they are.
Now, according to this, he made three calls to the same number.
That's 223-0399.
And all in the last 12 hours.
Chris.
Inspector Erskine, as you know
we've been keeping a close watch
on this Gene Allen since he came to Ensenada six months ago.
And apparently, your informant was right.
Something.. Something's in the wind.
Now, this afternoon, for instance
Allen had a couple of visitors I think you know.
Corman and Hammond. They're top money men.
He may have made a deal with them by now.
Yes, could be.
In any event, we're staying close to him.
And I've also posted some additional men
along our side of the border.
If Danzer tries a crossing, we'll nail him. For sure.
Well, thanks for your help, captain.
All of Allen's calls were to the 620 Lounge.
Cane's headquarters.
Lou, Chris, we've got a lead on Danzer and Mrs. Wolfe.
The police just had a call from the manager
of a motel on 5th Street.
We have a car waiting.
[instrumental music]
- What if you k*lled that man? - What if I did?
Well, he didn't do anything to you.
Where do you draw the line?
On my side, lady. All on my side. Now, you get out.
Oh, please leave me here.
- You get out. - Please. Leave me here.
You know something? I'd like to. I really would.
But I can't.
So you do just exactly what I tell you
and you won't get hurt.
Now, we're gonna be in a crowd.
I don't wanna have to hurt anybody else.
And I don't wanna have to hurt you.
Now, you understand?
Now, you get out.
Yeah, you bet. Yes, sir, I told him straight out.
I said, no name, no room number.
I didn't care how big he was.
You're certain he was foreign, huh?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
It was like, uh.. Like he was French.
Only, only different.
This is the man you rented the room to.
Oh yeah, yeah, that's him.
You know, he had a girl with him.
A good-looking brunette. Yeah.
You know, an FBI guy dropped one of these by earlier.
'It wasn't 10-15 minutes later'
'that they checked into that room.'
I sure wish I would have paid attention to this earlier. Hmph.
- Thank you. - Yeah.
Lou, the housekeeper says she didn't see them leave
and none of the guests did either.
Well, Becker, beat us to it. Somebody tipped him.
How about Arnie Cane?
[man on radio] 'SD-4 to SD-1.'
SD-1. Go ahead, Taylor.
'I'm at county hospital, emergency room.'
'They brought a man in who reports he was attacked'
'and his car stolen.'
'The description sounds like Danzer.'
'There was also a woman there. Seemed scared to death.'
We're on our way.
[instrumental music]
[instrumental music]
Hey, passing a little, uh
tourist village over here on the right.
Some of the people waving at us.
Save the tour.
Just thought you'd like to know what was happening.
I know what's happening.
Right now, the police are looking for that man's car.
And when they find it, they're gonna
trace you to the sightseeing boat.
They'll be waiting for you when you get off.
You've trapped yourself.
Afraid not, honey.
Just vamping a little.
Buying a little time till lift-off.
In a few minutes, we're gonna put in
for another load of tourists
and we'll be miles away from where we left that car.
By the time the cops do their legwork, we'll be long gone.
Relax.
Tonight, we'll be in Mexico. Ever been there?
You said you'd let me go. Look..
What good can I possibly be to you, now?
I'll only slow you down.
Wrong, lady.
I hope you'll move like a jet when I tell you to.
Yeah, that's the creep.
Had a dame with him, a brunette.
Wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for her.
I just sent in the last payment on that car.
Where was he heading?
Are you kidding?
I hit the ground like a free-falling safe.
Bam. Out cold.
Was he carrying anything, an attache case?
Yeah, a black one. Like you see lawyers have.
Ooh. Take it easy, this ain't no autopsy.
- Thanks. - Mm-hmm.
Well, that was a dead end. We haven't got much time.
Danzer's got to be half out of his mind
with Becker closing in on him.
Yeah. Not to mention, Mrs. Wolfe.
Look, Cane, you told me to call back in 20 minutes.
Well, I'm doing it. I want to go across the border now!
Now, where do we meet?
A van will be waiting for you
at the San Diego Boat-works.
"Hotel La Paz" will be painted on the doors.
You mean we're gonna drive across?
That's crazy. They'll check every car!
You'll be sandwiched in with other guests being driven
from the airport to the hotel.
The border guys all know the driver.
They'll motion you right through.
You'll be there in 20 minutes.
[dramatic music]
It's parked in the back.
[instrumental music]
SD-1 to units five and six on the special.
- Five here, Lou. - 'Unit six, inspector.'
Any activity?
All clear so far, inspector.
Uh, Cane's been inside since 5:00.
No sign of Danzer.
We'll be right there. Make sure Cane doesn't leave.
[instrumental music]
[jazz music]
- What will it be? - Arnie Cane.
Not here. What are you guys drinking?
He's back there playing pool.
We can find our own way. Thank you.
FBI, Cane.
Hey, I'm clean. You can't bust me for nothing.
Where's James Danzer?
I meet a lot of guys. I can't place him.
We think you already have, with Gene Allen in Ensenada.
The Mexican police reported that he contacted you
three times in a 12-hour period.
He kidnapped a woman. You know what that means?
Hey, I'm just a go-between.
A little fencing. A little fixing.
Nothing serious.
I ain't gonna take no fall for kidnapping.
Well, if you're not, you better tell us where Danzer is.
He's heading for the San Diego Boat-works.
What's there?
I told-told him there will be
a van to take him across the border.
It's a setup. There's a guy waiting there to hit him.
How long ago did he leave?
He should be there in a couple of minutes.
Get a statement from him and alert all units.
[instrumental music]
SD-5 to all units on the special.
Proceed immediately to the San Diego Boat-works.
[music continues]
[dramatic music]
Anyone closer than unit three?
- 'Negative, inspector.' - Looks like we're it.
Leave it.
Take it out very carefully and put it on the backseat.
Listen, let's make a deal.
We could make a deal.
He's gonna k*ll us. I can tell.
No, he's not. He's too smart.
Becker, listen. I'll split with ya.
- Fifty-fifty. - Take the briefcase.
Put that on the seat also.
You want the stones for yourself.
You're pulling a double-cross.
Do it!
Now, escort the lady into the car.
No! No!
'No!'
[grunts]
[dramatic music]
[g*nsh*t]
Just relax. Relax. Relax, Mrs. Wolfe. We're with the FBI.
Just take it easy.
[music continues]
[music continues]
[g*nsh*t]
Please.
Don't..
FBI, Becker!
[g*nshots]
[instrumental music]
[grunts]
Mrs. Wolfe is gonna be just fine.
That's one special lady.
Just a hunk of carbon.
Are these things worth the trouble?
[music continues]
[instrumental music]
Oh, lady. Lady!
What's your name? What's your name?
Claire Wolfe.
I just wanted you to know..
...I'm sorry.
I wouldn't have k*lled you.
Really. I wouldn't have.
Mrs. Wolfe?
I just finished talking with your husband.
He'll meet us at, uh, our office.
What did he say?
He says he loves you and he can't wait to see you.
[instrumental music]
[male narrator] James Danzer was convicted
in state court of kidnapping Claire Wolfe
and the sh**ting of the highway patrolman.
He was found guilty in federal court
of interstate transportation of stolen property
and a stolen aircraft.
Gustav Becker was convicted in federal court
of as*ault on a federal officer and in state court
of aggravated as*ault and attempted m*rder.
Arnold Cane and Earnest Cauldwell
were found guilty of conspiring
to violate the interstate transportation
