- [Schwag] Okay, Big Schwag here folks.

Jesse wants to build a wrestling truck,

but what's he really thinking?

- Are we gonna be able to do hot oil wrestling in this?

- I have no idea.

- [Jesse] Coleslaw wrestling.

- Yeah. - And shaving cream wrestling.

This week's challenge, turn this 30 foot U-Haul truck

The team can spend no more than $5,000 for parts.

Jesse and his crew have seven days and nights.

On the first day they design.

For the next five they build.

And on the seventh day, they wrestle.

[garbled ring announcement]

If successful, they walk away with a $3,400 set

And the clock's crushed now.

[glass shattering]

[audience cheering]

For this week's design, Jesse has called on a friend

who spent plenty of time grappling on the mat.

Pro wrestling champion Goldberg

has come to lend some ringside expertise.

- [growls] Here we are again.

- Goldberg.

- [Narrator] Jesse's been buddies with Goldberg for years,

starting when he built him a custom West Coast Choppers

El Diablo Rigid.

- I wouldn't be half as cool as I am without Jesse James.

It's definitely gonna be a proud moment, man.

I've been wanting to get on this show for a long time

and I thought I was gonna have to k*ll him

because he hadn't put me on here.

But now we're gonna be on the same team,

so I'm only afraid for our opponent.

- [Narrator] So now Jesse wants to take the chaos

of professional wrestling Monster Mobile.

I'm in the circus.

So now we're the traveling circus of the U-Haul, cool.

Gimme another opportunity to get my a*s kicked.

Thank you, I appreciate that.

We got the script?

Am I winning?

- Yeah.

- It's good. [Jesse chuckles]

- [Crew Member] This is a reality show.

- Yeah.

- Then I'm definitely fricking winning.

- To set up like a Monday Night Raw or something like that,

it's a huge major production.

You gotta have an arena and trucks and trailers

and sound and stage and lights and all that stuff.

I want to condense all that into one vehicle.

We have to- - Wow. [chuckles]

- We have to break it down into the elements.

Wrestlers, ring, is the two most important ones.

- [Narrator] Jesse decides how his homemade match

will appear on the card.

- I mean, to make it go automatic,

I think it's gonna have to be a cage match.

'Cause we're gonna have to do four corners for the ring

and then some kind of truss that pulls

with cables or something like that.

That pulls the sides closed.

- Right.

- I mean, I don't know anything about

what the surface has to be on the bottom of the ring.

- One spring, right in the middle of the ring.

- Right, that'll compensate for the whole floor.

- Well, what if we use the suspension of the truck?

- The leaf springs are so hard on it,

I don't know if the body weight

would actually make it fluctuate.

- We can loosen it up. - It doesn't

have to move much.

- Pull some springs out of it.

- [Narrator] Ellis Edwards is a stunt man

who isn't afraid of danger

or of making mechanical suggestions to Jesse James.

- You could actually have poles in here welded into place,

which would let through pulleys,

let these walls go down.

- I gotta think about that.

I think of a good way to do it

because every time we've tried

to raise the sides on something

or anything, it's gotten real screwed up.

So I got until Monday to figure that one out, so...

- [Narrator] It looks like Jesse's holding off

on the details until he's met his build team.

- This is gonna be like the skateboard ramp,

the school bus, the...

What other big ones have we done?

Where it's just a ton of labor.

- [Narrator] Based on what's been designed so far,

the plan is to first take off the truck's roof

and toss it for scrap.

The side walls will cable open to reveal a wrestling cage

and a set of VIP seats for the mobile match of a lifetime.

- There's so many people's asses I want to kick.

- We'll just put a megaphone on the top of it

and you can just call 'em out.

[driving rock music]

- U-Haul truck into a mobile wrestling ring.

I don't think this one's gonna be technically that tough

unless you've got some secret wrestling ring stuff

that I don't know about.

- Let's see what you wanna do. - I think it's just gonna be

a chunk of labor.

Strong, big cage to anchor everything on.

It's gotta look stock.

Wanna, like, split the sides and have it fold down

and close up, which means we're probably

gonna have to peel it apart first.

Get it down to like a flatbed

and then we'll rebuild it back up.

- [Narrator] Mark, who's built dozens

of professional rings, has concerns

about the narrowness of the U-Haul.

- Regular ring is 20 foot square,

center pole to center pole.

- [Jesse] And this is what, eight feet wide?

- Yeah, eight feet to the outside.

- It's just a little smaller, it'll be cool.

Then the person getting pummeled

can't run away as easy.

[crew laughing]

- That's for sure.

How wide do we wanna make the ring then?

I'm just, uh...

- Well, let's get that,

let's start measuring this thing

and figure out, you know, I'd say

before we really, really go after it,

let's take some good, decent measurements.

Let's mark the outside of it

and kind of do it a little bit civilized.

- [Narrator] Did he say civilized?

Because Jesse's got Goldberg in mind,

he takes a different approach.

He skips the usual frenzied tear out

and looks for a way to expand the width of the truck

and mechanically widen the cage.

- What if we take three quarter pipe or half inch pipe

and build a mesh

and have these separate panels so when they come out,

they come out and they do this.

You have your panel here

and this will come out and just do that.

- [Narrator] Jesse's paying the price

for not enough planning in the design.

Now there's too many cooks in the U-Haul kitchen.

- How about if we go with,

these are the bottom of the floor.

Okay, when that folds out to here like this,

the corner posts are right here and they swing out.

So what you have is a double fold.

- I'm thinking about your double fold thing.

- [Crew Member] Okay.

- [Narrator] Jesse's been moved by his ambitious team

and decides to scrap the mini cage idea entirely

and make a full sized wrestling ring.

- If we're gonna really do something cool

and do a wrestling ring, I think we should

do like this and do some, a actual,

real wrestling ring pops out.

'Cause then when people see that, you know right what it is.

When they see a cage

and stuff like that, they're gonna be, what's that?

You know, they're not gonna know what it is or what it does.

- [Narrator] But it's got to be a simpler design.

- I'm just trying to think of another way to do it-

- Right, okay, but-

- Instead of some big old crazy mechanical-

- Right, but if we take the same thing

you're doing here-

- [Narrator] The ring builder comes up with the idea

to fold the ring's floor to an A-frame inside the truck

that will expand on hydraulic cylinders.

- It'll snap down

and the ring will lock up and the ropes will tighten up.

- That'll work.

But if we make these,

we lighten these sides down to nothing,

you know, we could pull a pin

and let 'em flop down on their own and then

[imitating a motor] hit a button

and the ring pulls tight, opens up, done.

- [Narrator] The new plan calls for the ring

to be folded inside the truck.

Four separate hydraulically powered rams

will push the ring open and body slam the walls

to reveal a wrestling ring on wheels.

[clattering]

Lots of changes to the Goldberg-inspired design

have eaten away at build day one.

The team tries to make up for lost time

by scrapping the truck's original walls

so they can build lighter ones.

Marty tries her hand at cutting out the first sidewall.

- It's a lot harder than it looks.

I give props to every guy I've ever laughed at

for using one of those.

My dad included, sorry Dad.

[whooshing]

- [Narrator] Marty Coronel became a metal burner

thanks to some good old fashioned fatherly love.

- My dad, who told me, go to college,

get a degree, get a degree in anything,

it'll just open up doors for you.

I don't think he meant welding,

but I am a product of his doing

because when I was a kid,

I was the one in the garage helping him build.

I was his little helper, and you know what?

That's how come I turned out to be a tomboy, I think.

[driving rock music]

Which side we gonna push?

[clattering]

- [Narrator] The design for this ring is all Mark's,

but he's already making sure that success or failure

doesn't rest fully on his shoulders.

- And I wanna make sure everyone understands

what we're doing before we move forward.

This is not my project, it's a team project

and it has to be thought out and everybody has to agree

and we're all agreed when we're building it.

This has gotta way we're gonna go.

So we're all at fault if something goes wrong,

we all need to be at fault together.

[whooshing]

- [Narrator] Master ring builder

Mark Carpenter has put strangle holds

on nearly 40 professional wrestling rings

for his own company, MTJ Manufacturing.

- People ask us, what does it stand for?

And it stands for my three children, which is Mark,

my oldest son and my daughter Taylor,

which is my middle daughter

and my youngest daughter Jillian.

So it's Mark, Taylor and Jillian.

- [Narrator] He may be soft-hearted at home,

but at work he's all business.

- When you feel like I do and your reputation's on the line,

and especially in an event like this

where you have no control of what they're gonna put on t.v.,

you'd better get outta my way.

from flexing under the sidewalls weights.

But some builders need convincing

about the double layered steel.

has made a hobby out of making things mobile.

His favorite invention?

A collapsible full vert skate ramp.

- It's 12 feet tall, 10 and a half foot radius,

And when that thing opens up, it's like

almost 20 feet from the ground.

The full vert is definitely one of a kind.

There is nobody that has that.

There's been a lot of people who said,

I'm not sure if you can do that.

That's pretty huge.

And so we proved them wrong because we know it works.

Ow. [clattering]

Okay, here are your 11 footers.

- [Narrator] Angel builds trusses

that will be the outer edges of the expanding ring.

These crucial supports will be the foundation

for the entire ring as it expands.

- Basically this has a wood frame in here.

We're putting a truss in.

Okay, and that's gonna connect.

That's gonna be on the side of the truck.

That's what's coming out.

The poles are gonna mount on a corner of that.

We'll take it from there.

And they drilled dozens of holes for dozens of bolts

to hold it to the truck.

- This, it says, okay,

the picture is different.

- Trust me. - I know.

- This is a, this is a lift gate.

- No, this is a one way.

I understand that.

- We use them on lift gates all the time.

- [Narrator] This single direction pump

will only open the ring, not close it.

- You need that, and it's got a big tank

and we need that power supply and make sure we got power up

and power down or power in both directions.

- Yeah.

- So you need to get the different pump than this one.

- If we bring it back real quick

and just tell 'em we haven't used it,

hopefully swap it out, yeah.

It's a hundred dollar difference.

So I screwed up.

But I can live with that.

to push the sidewalls out,

which the truss there

for the corner posts on the telescoping beam.

But team leader Mark wants to approve her plan.

- These are gonna be the posts, the four corners.

- This one's not being cut on this side.

[both arguing]

- I can see it.

Trust me, I can see it.

I don't need-

- You need a, you need a left,

you need two like this and two like that.

- Yeah. - Exactly.

I follow that. - [Mark] Okay.

- I can't complete a sentence with him.

I'm stopped in the middle of every sentence

and I'm sorry that he's so narrow-minded.

- Right, set 'em up like that, and that's it.

- [Narrator] Marty takes the heat

and moves forward as the team's metal burner.

[driving rock music]

- Don't want too much play.

and make it all mechanically move with hydraulics.

This team is drastically behind schedule.

- My goal is to have the floor set in place.

I don't know where the hydraulics are.

That's gonna be another issue for tomorrow, I think.

And that's about it.

- [Narrator] Waiting to mount and test hydraulics

on the final build day could be catastrophic.

But the team focuses on skinning the side walls

with 300 square feet

of T6 5052 grade aluminum sheeting.

[thrumming]

[driving rock music]

Each team member is on their own task.

[buzzing]

The hydraulics expert needs to build

an extra hydraulic fluid reservoir

to service the four huge cylinders.

- This overflow container is too small

and it would just sh**t out the top of that spout.

So what we're doing is, we're having a second

overflow chamber, or reservoir.

And made it outta the scrap.

Since we cut this off, I got this here.

Put the end caps on.

[clanking]

- [Narrator] As the ring closes,

each hydraulic arm will push fluid back towards the pump.

The extra reservoir gives the gallons of fluid

a place to go.

These hydraulics will make or break this build.

And Ron's handmade tank is on center stage.

- We're gonna put soapy water on the outside

of it along the seams.

Then we're gonna put pressure, inside air pressure.

And if there's a hole, you'll see a little bubble start

and then you'll see me get all upset and, ugh.

[hissing]

- That's it right there.

- We got two here. - Yeah.

- One down on that corner.

- Got quite a few.

I had a lot of fill in there.

- [Narrator] And what does Mike

think of Ron's reservoir?

- Leaks like a sieve.

- [Ron] Yeah, it does.

I mean, there's quite a few little pinholes.

- [Narrator] When the quiet veteran builder

makes fun of you,

you're in the U-Haul doghouse.

Ron fills the half dozen leaks in his homemade tank

and goes back for a second test.

[hissing]

- Uh, just one, okay.

[hissing]

- Hey Marty,

you wanna weld this up for him?

- Okay, - That's it.

- [Narrator] He may have passed his exams at Stanford,

but he's failing miserably in the Monster Garage.

Angel, the fabricator that doesn't speak too much,

but gets the job done, builds the back door in record time.

[rock music]

- Beautiful.

- Drop it down?

- Okay, let's stand it up against the wall.

- [Narrator] Ron finished triple welding his reservoir

and Marty burns it to the cab's floor.

[buzzing]

- [Marty] Oh.

- [Ron] Look at that one.

- [Narrator] Mike takes on the back door

and makes it look stock.

- Yeah.

And shaving cream wrestling.

- This is cool though, yeah?

A spool action aluminum wire feed welder.

[b*llet ricochets]

- 2003 welder of the year, American Welding Society.

[camera shutter clicking]

[buzzing]

- Before we go home, I wanna see this floor in place.

Okay?

- I like that dude.

He's barking out orders at everyone.

We need him on every build.

I've had like 12 people say they hate him,

so I know he's good.

He's just working and trying to get the job done.

- [Narrator] Having built dozens of professional rings,

Mark knows that wrestlers slamming against ropes

can actually bend the four-inch steel corner posts.

To prevent this, he wants to build a diagonal brace

from the post to the truss.

- You think it's really gonna flex that much?

- I've had these pipes bend with a plate inside

almost four to five inches from from here to the top.

- Wow.

- That's how much pressure they put on 'em.

'Cause what we got is,

I don't want this thing to start doing this.

- If it's all straight and perfect,

it won't look like it's made at Monster Garage.

[chuckling]

- That's not the way I work though, dude.

- Okay. - Okay?

- [Narrator] Just as the team's showing real progress

the bartender/welder questions the need

for Mark's corner pole supports.

- I don't think it's gonna give enough

to make it matter.

- Are you put anything down here?

- She doesn't wanna do it and she's cuter,

so maybe we should see if it works without it.

- Nobody tips the scales at me when I'm here to do a job

that I know what I'm doing.

I've seen them bend,

I've replaced the poles,

I've changed them many a times.

I must have made a hundred sets.

Don't tell me, my product, how it's gonna work or not.

- [Narrator] Mark's been challenged enough

and he's finished playing Mr. Nice Guy.

He calls the World Wrestling Entertainment's headquarters

to prove his design.

- Talk to him.

- Okay.

All right, cool.

We'll put 'em in then.

Bye.

Hey Marty, I just talked to Ellis, who runs WWE.

They need 'em.

- [Marty] Okay, that's fine.

- If Big Show's 500 pounds flying against the ropes...

It's just a personality conflict

where she just doesn't like the way she's asked to do stuff

and automatically, no!

You know, which I can totally,

I totally associate with that.

You know, people think I'm an a*s all the time,

but I manage to get the job done.

- [Narrator] Marty's defiance is the straw

that broke the ring builder's back.

- Ain't nobody [glass shattering] fools me.

[buzzing]

- [Narrator] After four tension-filled days in the garage,

Mark's finally lost his cool.

But he has a vision.

And the strong-willed veteran tries to make peace.

- And I don't wanna leave it alone.

I want you guys to get the toolbox.

I want you to see it.

'Cause if it doesn't come out for me,

I'll build it for someone else.

I know a lot of people, and this is a great start.

It's just-

- Mark, I had no idea we were doing your job

and only your job.

I thought this was all of our jobs

and I thought we were a team.

- This design-

- [Marty] And I didn't realize,

yeah, and I didn't realize you were the only one-

- [Mark] All right, you do what you gotta do, Marty.

'Cause I tell you what, if I don't stay here-

- Okay, whatever.

I don't, I'm not even, this is not-

- She keeps contradicting me.

It's not her [tool clattering] design, it's mine.

Doesn't concern you.

It's a team, but don't contradict my design.

Or you can do it yourself.

- Contradict your design?

- [Mark] Right, this, Ron.

- [Ron] Well, Monday was, you came up with this-

- Okay, okay, okay.

Then finish it up.

I'm not a quitter.

I need to cool down.

I'll get back into it in a little while.

[bell chiming] You grind it.

I haven't seen him hardly do any amount of work

except pointing fingers at everybody.

- Hey Ron?

Ron.

- I'm not talking to you.

- Okay. - I've got integrity.

- Jerk.

- [Narrator] At 6:00 PM on build day four,

this team has officially hit rock bottom.

- I'm a, I'm just a little ticked right now.

You know, you got a guy that just got a God complex,

you know, and people that lack integrity and character.

It's hard to work with.

I wouldn't want to be in a foxhole with a person like that.

- [Narrator] As Mark takes a tantrum time out,

the one builder that keeps working

is the guy who didn't even want to be here

in the first place.

Mike's creating an ingenious way to boost the ring's floor

before the hydraulics pull it closed.

- It would be driving those two little bags right up there.

You see right above you?

They'll go in the back end to pop the floor.

- [Narrator] Mike found two U-Haul airbags

that will feed into the truck's air tank.

With the flip of a switch, the bags will inflate

and raise the floor past its breaking point

so the hydraulics can pull it in.

[bluesy guitar]

Despite their differences

and 14 hours in the garage together,

the team manages to keep working.

- Oh yeah, I like that.

- [Narrator] They attach hinges for the folding ring.

And Mark lays out two by four steel tubing

that will be the floorboards.

- We're getting it, we're getting it.

Come on.

- [Narrator] After 16 straight hours in the garage,

they managed to nearly complete the floor.

[bluesy guitar]

[clanking]

After placing in the back door

they call it a night.

[buzzing]

- I'm happy with it.

- [Narrator] But mounting and tweaking hydraulics

to move a 2000 pound floor will not be easy.

It's quite possible that this truck will end up

just as trampled as the team.

- [Schwag] Jesse thinks these builders

may be down for the count.

- If you guys weren't screwing around so much

you would've had this thing done already.

♪ Monster, Monster Garage

- What do you know?

Day six.

If it ain't finished by now, I'm gonna kick their a*s.

- [Narrator] The final build day is here,

and Goldberg is looking to kick the unfinished team's butt.

To open and close the ring floor

Ron gets a delivery he's been preparing for all week.

Four separate 42-inch stroke hydraulic cylinders

have arrived for the build.

In order to set in the hydraulics,

the team ratchets up the floor

so Ron can weld them into place.

[driving rock music]

[thumping]

Ron and Marty start mounting their hydraulic cylinders

to the rams.

[hissing] - [Ron] Okay.

- [Narrator] And Mike makes dozens of lines

to run hydraulic fluid back and forth

from the pump to the cylinders.

Jesse's there to check on the build.

- This is good. - Thank you.

- [tool clattering] Wicked.

- [Narrator] Since he refuses

to see this build get demolished,

he lowers the stakes.

- Well to be done, realistically,

I just want it to open and close and that's it.

And then we can-

- [Ron] It'll be able to open and close.

- The finished stuff, as far as the sides.

- We have instructions,

Jesse told me, as long as we give him the hydraulics,

the airbags, and hang the sides, we got our boxes.

So let's get it done and we'll get outta here early.

- [Narrator] But guess which two builders

don't like being handed a victory?

- It doesn't make me feel good

to think that the challenge is any less

than what I thought.

- I'd like to at least work up to midnight

if we have to and get more than what they say is okay.

- We're gonna do it.

We are gonna do it.

- As soon as this thing opens and closes, we're done.

[funky guitar]

- [Jesse] Do you have anything for me to do?

- Yeah, you can come up here and weld

and let's see your skill.

- [Crew Member] Oh.

- A sizzling duel.

- [Marty] Come on, show me what you got.

but they're getting it done.

[driving rock music]

If you guys weren't screwing around so much,

you would've had this thing done already.

[buzzing]

- [Narrator] The first step in hydraulics

is to slowly add hydraulic fluid

in order to bleed the air from the lines

and the cylinders.

At five o'clock on their last day

the entire build

depends on these hydraulics working flawlessly.

- I mean, I've used this motor before

for other little projects

and we've been successful with it,

so hopefully it's just another successful run.

how much these lines are taking.

Ron's expertise, along with hydraulic fluid,

is dripping to the ground.

- [Crew Member] Whoa.

- Hang on, I got an overflow here.

Why do I have an overflow?

- Ron, Ron, this is your job.

- No, I don't know Ron.

- Okay, well then you should be all set

if you know what you, I didn't run the numbers,

so I can't help you right now.

I can't, I'm not doing anything

until the hydraulics are working.

- What's happening is, is those rods are going back in

and as those rods go in, that volume that

that rod takes up is coming out here.

and there's no air in the lines,

we've got the proper amount.
