Welcome to the inner realm

forbidden nightmares.

It's the Monster Funhouse.

g*ng of maverick mechanics

rip, grind, and burn,

transforming ordinary
street vehicles

into monster machines

Announcer:
-This week's challenge,
turn a road tripping RV

into a funhouse on wheels.

The rules: When built,

the vehicle must appear to be
carnival worthy.

The team has
five grand for parts.

Jesse and the crew have
seven days and nights.

On the first day,
they design.

For the next five, they build.

And on the seventh day,
they have fun.

If successful,
they walk away with a $4,000 set

of Mac's hottest tools.

And the clock
starts now.

This week's design crew hauls
the '94 Southwind Storm

off the streets of Long Beach
and into the monster junkyard.

The freebie from Fleetwood

is too big
to fit through the door,

so most of the work this week

will be done
outside the garage.

The vehicle's not the only thing
missing from the garage.

Jesse James
is nowhere in sight.

So where is Jesse?

In Lake Tahoe challenging
the snow-cat and log splitter.

And he won't be back
for two whole days.

Jesse:
-Log splitter.

Announcer:
-But Jesse knows
the show must go on,

so this design crew will make
"Monster Garage" history

and map out the project

without any help
from the master fabricator.

with the idea ourselves,
which is fine.

What's our age bracket?

Who are we
aiming for?

-I think we need to stay...
ten-years-old?

Eight to ten.
-Yeah, ten, 12-years-old.

I think that is,
we can pretty well suit,

outfit it with ten,

-We'll never get enough

We've got to stick
with our target.
-Evil teenagers.

I think we've got...

I think we can probably
try to incorporate some,

some type of free-wheeling
spin discs on the floor.

I think we can probably
get some rollers in there.

And some bungee--

what we call
a bungee cord walk through.

-I really want that
where you open the door

and then a boxing glove
comes out

and drills you in the face.

I'm just saying.

in front of the barrel.

-Right there.

-A couple of them,
three or four right there.

-Maybe one more right there.

If we can find ourselves a pool
slide or something like that,

that we can exit them
out the back end off of,

I think that would be great.

-And I don't think,
I don't think

seven and ten-year-olds
are too young for a dark theme.

-No, there's nothing,
there's nothing in here...

-No, we can stick with a monster
theme and monster graphics.

Liisa:
-It seems very tame.

-It needs some monster
clown face on the front.

-Something.
-Sound track.

We gotta hook up
a sound track.

It should have a grind tape
on the outside,

like a two minute loop.

-What's a grind tape?

-It's outside every funhouse
or carnival thing.

It's just a looping tape of,
you know, some kind of thing

to build up the mystery
of what's inside.

-That's it.
All right?

-Let's rock.
-I'm ready to go.

Tyler:
-Group hug.

But without

-I got a loose screw here.

-Oh, dude!

-Let me tighten it up.
-How the hell?

-Well, it's a little frustrating

not to get the final word
on how it's going to be going.

-Almost noon.

We have zero building materials.

We're yet to even meet our
fearless leader, Jesse James.

And as you can see,
the inside of the RV

is completely empty.

-I'm wondering if
Mr. Jesse James

is gonna show up today.

There's a possibility

build this thing.

at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

juniors and seniors,

to do structural welding.

I think I have never
been more hard core

than I am now
after having taught.

I mean, I just, you know...

bring it, you know.

I deal with teenagers all day,

what are you
gonna give me?

-Having spent her entire career

in a typically
male dominated world,

Liisa knows the drill.

Liisa:
-I have an obligation
to myself and to society

to be just the most hot ...
welder on Earth.

Announcer:
-As the old saying goes,

"Those who can, do.

Those who can't..." you know.

Liisa's out to disprove
that theory

by cranking out a pile of
brackets to anchor their walls.

-There it is.

There it is.

Announcer:
-Joe's curiosity leads him
to a fresh pile of lumber.

They'll use it
to build out the barrel

and wall up the inside.

Joe's friend Greg arrives
to donate an outdated motor

that will get their
drum rolling.

-Set it right over here.

-Your power supply
will have zero to 50 on it,

so just ride it up 'til it's
right on the speed you want

and call it good.

They collect dust,
nobody wants them anymore.

Old technology.

It's perfect for what
you guys are doing.

Announcer:
-The lumber and motor
aren't the only new arrivals.

When Jesse finally makes it back
to Long Beach,

he beelines it
straight for the RV

where his first impression
is less than enthusiastic.

-This doesn't look
that much fun.

What do you guys got going here?

-So the idea is this front room
is a hall of mirrors

so we were thinking like
funhouse mirror on this side

and on this side.

Then this side,
it goes into--

these are spinning plates
on the floor.

-...you come into
a separate room here.

It goes this way.
-Oh, so it's got a floor.

-Around this corner
of the partition

a bungee maze in here,

which will be hooks
in the ceiling and the floor

and the walls, bungees at
all different angles

to where you actually
have to crawl through.

-Then you guys are going to put
one of those big drum things.

Joe:
-That goes in the back.

-Can we put it on a rheostat so
that we can turn it up

when certain people
walk through?

We need to put it so just,

I just want Body Drop
to go through it.

What about the outside
and stuff like that?

Doing a skull and all that?

-Big, old,
skull clown face out front.

-We got a foam expert for
putting the foam front end on.

-Who's that?
You?

-I don't call myself an expert,
but yeah.

-Okay.
-The foam sculptor guy.

-We can just blank out
the windows

and have
a couple of big guys in here.

When people come in,
they're all,

"If you go outside,
you tell everybody you had fun."

Like that.
-Good thinking.

That would save us
a lot of time.

-"If anybody asks you,
you had the funnest time ever."

The only thing I don't--

I'm not too sure about
is the disc things,

'cause kids are smart enough now
with PlayStation

and stuff like that,
that they'll just

walk on the edge.

I don't know.

I think I went in one
and the floor was like,

had one with, like,
a tilting floor.

And it was like a room
and it was totally dark,

where you couldn't see anything.

You couldn't even see your hand
in front of your face.

And the floor like shook
or something like that...

-What if we did the...

Like if we put the floor
on like a...

castors or something, like,

just made a wobbly floor
right through here.

-Yeah and do it so it's dark
so you got to walk through

an overlapping curtains
so it's totally dark.

Yeah, I just think,
this is cool,

but I just think...

Joe:
-How can we make it better?

Jesse:
-Kids are way smarter
than we were now.

Announcer:
After checking out the RV,

Jesse and crew decide to scrap
the spinning discs

in favor of a tilting panel.

And in addition to the floor,

they'll build suspense by
sculpting a clown skull

for the front
end and adding a stereo system

to blast their grind tape
out to the crowd.

With the green light from Jesse,

the team is finally willing
to forge ahead.

-I think we're just
relieved that we have materials

and we have like the veto
section possibility is out.

-229.

Announcer:
-Fred has no qualms putting
their revised plan into action.

-It's all
for the better and, uh,

just got to get cranking on it.

Announcer:
-While he
un-decorates the interior,

the rest of the crew are out
to make some changes.

They remove the RV's rear wall

to clear a path
for the barrel

which they'll build indoors.

Liisa:
-There you go, it's sweet.

Fred:
-Nice.

-That's it.
-There you go.

Now we got some room
to put that drum in.

Very cool.
We're making headway.

Announcer:
-Joe Hahn is an especially key
member of this motley crew

because apparently RV
technicians are a rare breed.

-Unlike the automotive industry,

there's not anywhere near
the repair manual information

that's available on them.

It's amazing how much work
it can potentially take

just to keep one functioning
like it's supposed to.

It's a house and a car
combined into one unit,

so there's a lot there to,
to go wrong.

-Christmastime.

Announcer:
-An end of day delivery
gets their wheels spinning.

-Ah, my bungee cords.
-There you go.

-Castors and bungees.
-Castors for the drum.

I think this will work.

Now that these are here,
I like this.

Liisa:
-Yeah, this is
feeling much better.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

-Nice, big wheel, it doesn't
have to turn too fast.

-We're gonna need
some heavy labor

just when we're installing--

installing is a ... .

Announcer:
-They'll work
like dogs tomorrow,

but for now, the carnie crew
heads home.

They still haven't made
a lot of progress,

but this build definitely

isn't more
than they can swallow.

-Yummy!

Announcer:
-Ladies and gentlemen,
boys and girls,

step right up and be among
the first to witness

the amazing,
the incredible, day four.

-Picked up some stuff
that is local last night,

so if we can start to work
on the tilt floor.

-Once we get the foam here
then we can start,

start really moving
on that clown head.

And that and the barrel,
those are our two,

two objectives today.

-If we can get the barrel
done and set today,

that will be a huge
accomplishment.

-We're gonna record some screams

at some point this morning.

-Oh yeah!

-So I'm gonna send
these sound files out

to Kevin Scott at Sweet m*ssile

and he is going to mix up
a crazy grind tape

for the outside of the funhouse.

Announcer:
-Liisa moves from recording
screams to inducing them

and pieces together
the support structure

that will brace
the tilting floor.

-Weld that into here.

We're gonna need, like,
a C-clamp across here.

Announcer:
-She tops off the support

using a toe ball
for the pivot point.

But before she finishes
the frame,

Liisa needs to know
how high it will ride.

Joe:
-Okay.

-Oh, that's a lot higher now.

-Now that's a serious
rocking floor.

-So if this is built up.

-It comes out almost level.
-That's, that's good.

-Perfect, huh?
-That's perfect.

-So let's get her
to come weld this up.

-Okay, let's very carefully
lift this off.

-Yep.

-Okay, now nothing
gets touched in here.

-There you go.

Announcer:
-Brian heads outside

as the building blocks
for the giant skull arrive...

... then cements them together
with liquid foam...

... before outlining
facial features

and revealing
some tricks of the trade.

-This is a transformer...

and it cranks up the AC
to DC amps.

And, uh...

basically it puts too much
amperage through this small,

this thin wire
and it makes it hot.

It's basically kind of
a light bulb,

only without the bulb.

Announcer:
-Foam sculpting is perhaps
the most important skill used

in Brian Pierson's
high profile job.

-I'm a special effects artist.

Just worked on
a bunch of movies,

pretty high budget stuff,

"Alien Resurrection",
"Mimic", "Titanic",

quite a few.

Keep it kind of seesaw
back and forth

so we don't get locked in here.

Announcer:
-But Brian isn't just
a Hollywood hotshot,

he's also a scientist

who combines art
with anthropology.

-I'm actually doing kind of
forensic reconstructions

of early hominoids.

-I'm headed down now.

Announcer:
-The hot wire glides through
the bead foam

like a warm knife
through butter.

-Ugh, stinky.

This is total
Coney Island style.

Do it again.

Yay!

Brian:
-Gotta love it.

Announcer:
-The Great Fredini

spent nearly a decade

performing at Coney Island,

but eventually saw the limits
to his unusual profession.

-Once you're swallowing swords

hammering nails
up your nose for eight years,

you're kind of like--
there's not a lot

of upward track
in that kind of career, so...

Announcer:
-So Fred worked his way
from the sideshow

to the main stage as host of
the burlesque game show

"This or That", seen on
New York's public access.

Fred:
-It's all about getting these
contestants to kind of

come out of their shell

and kind of become the stars
of the burlesque stage,

so it's really good.

[Fred laughing]

It's good, clean fun.

Now that's entertainment,

ladies and gentlemen!

Announcer:
-The parts they've ordered
just keep rolling in.

-Hey, that's good.

These will lay down on the floor
and when you walk across them,

it's a section of rolling floor.

This circus of a build now
officially has three rings.

Fred:
-Jesse's got us
jumping through hoops.

Announcer:
-The angle iron rings
that will brace their barrel

roll in after being bent into
perfect circles

at an outside shop.

Liisa cuts the overlapping edges

and welds the bent steel
into three matching circles.

Midway through the day,
Jesse punches in.

-What's happening here?

Announcer:
-And he's actually happy

with the team's progress so far.

-What are you gonna use for
the, the slats or,

just two by fours?

That looks pretty cool, man.

-Thanks, man.

Announcer:
-Jesse likes
Brian's handiwork.

It's the first time
he's seen something

other than a car hotwired.

Tyler builds their mirror frames

modeling them after the ones
he's seen at Coney Island.

And Fred uses a piece of
durable mirrored Plexi

in favor of real glass.

-Ready?
-Yeah.

It's gonna be the first thing
you see

when you walk in through
the door of the funhouse,

so we wanted
a really big effect,

something that would
really draw you in.

Announcer:
-Joe readies the freshly welded
rings for drilling.

The plan is to
pre-drill the rings

to make attaching the boards
easier.

-The bolt has to go here
so the nut can fit on

behind the leg
of the angle iron.

Then we have just enough room

to line the wheel up
at this edge,

and have the bolt head
get past

the inboard edge of this castor.

The bolt heads are just barely
going to come by

this edge of the castor.

Yeah, this is gonna be
more time consuming

than what I anticipated,
I'm afraid.

And we thought
we were gonna have this drum

put together tonight.

Oh well.

-I'm a little further behind
than I thought.

I'm about, uh...

three or four hours behind

where I'd really
be comfortable being.

But truth be told,

I think I can...

I think I can hit the ground
running tomorrow.

-We didn't get
enough done today.

This barrel thing that we
thought would be fabricated

and ready to put
the castors together

and set in the back of
the motor home is...

-Empty.
-... still three circles of
disappointment in my opinion.

-I feel a lot more comfortable
now than I did yesterday.

At the end of the day yesterday,
I was freaking out.

-I was better last night
than I am tonight.

-Really?
-Yeah.

-Oh good, we can switch.

I'll sleep.

Announcer:
-The end of day four
finds the team falling behind...

-This is stupid.

Announcer:
-With only two more days
to get this show on the road.

Monster Garage Factoid...

Day five.

The build crew marches in

knowing they need to focus
on the important stuff.

-The only thing
that really matters:

grind tape, face and barrel.

-As long as we get them in
and get their money...

-All right, fellows.
Let's do it.

-Excellent.
-Group hug.

Brian:
-Always with the group hug.

Announcer:
-The hotwire
isn't the only tool of the trade

Brian's brought with him
to Long Beach.

-This is a gribbler.

It's a homemade piece of metal

with dangerous edges

and even more dangerous screws
stuck through it.

Announcer:
-As Brian gribbles the nose

and carves out some choppers,

Liisa, Joe and Tyler team up

to finish
drilling the rings.

Once the rings are ready,

Joe clamps two by fours
into place

to correctly frame
castor wheels below.

Joe:
-Rotate it back this way some.

Right about, a little more.

Announcer:
-The wheel's placement
and position need to be perfect.

There's more riding on them
than 600 pounds of barrel.

-We have a lot of eggs
in this basket.

I hope it works.

Announcer:
-Jesse rolls in to take on
the RV's exhaust.

But today he is also busy
with a media circus.

-Ross is gonna help us today.

Announcer:
-Ross the Intern,
from "The Tonight Show,"

is spending a day shadowing
the master fabricator.

-Do you like it?
Look I pre-greased it for you.

You see the smudges.

Actually, this one over here
is chocolate.

-You look like you're from the
gas station Old Navy commercial.

-Thank you.

Oh, fun!

-Here, you bring that out.
-No, pull me.

-No.
-Jesse.

-No, you're my intern.
Come on.

-All right, I know how
to decorate.

I don't know exhaust.

-It's like decorating,
but only for your ears.

-All right.

I'm exhausted
just dragging this thing.

Eh? See what I did there?

With exhaust?
Okay, go, go, go, go!

Announcer:
-Jesse and Ross clear a path
to the exhaust

by raising the RV
and removing a rim.

-Is the RV going to fall on me?

Ah! Ah!
-Oh my God, you got one off.

All that--
-[drill grinding]

-You know, you're about as far
from a grease monkey

as I've ever seen.

-Remember, lift with your legs,
not with your back.

-Cool.
-You want to go start it up
and see if it sounds better?

-Wait, you took the muffler off

and you're going to
start it up?

-Yeah, see what it sounds like.

-Doesn't it need a muffler?
-No.

-[engine revving]
-All right, it's good,
it's loud.

That's loud.

-[man speaking, indistinct]
-Yeah, totally.

-Is that how you want it?
-Yeah.

I want
everybody to know we're coming.

-Oh, well, good.
Then I did a good job.

Announcer:
-The Fleetwood's new purr

is music to Jesse's ears,

so he and Ross
hit the road

as the rest of the crew gets
ready for a drum roll.

Tyler:
-One, two, three, up.

God.

Announcer:
-With the rings in place
on the castors,

the team sends it
for a test spin

and Liisa decides she'll join it
on its maiden voyage.

-Yeah!
-Hey, hey, hey!

Now we're having some fun.

Announcer:
-The barrel turns,

but Liisa wants to make sure
it doesn't roll away,

so she welds in
a second set of castors

to lock it in place
while it rotates.

Joe:
-Yeah, that works.

-Yeah!
-Yeah.

-That definitely works.
-That's beautiful.

-Walk through it.
-Oh, God.

Joe:
-All right,
I think the big test

is when somebody gets inside
and holds on.

-Well, we did that.
You want to see?

Announcer:
-The additional castors
