take a beat up 1969 Chevy Impala
and rehabilitate it into a custom low rider.

The rules: the car must appear to be slammed
and the team can spend no more than $5,000 for parts.
Jesse and the inmates have seven days and nights.
On the first day they design,
for the next five they build,
and on the seventh day he runs.
If successful, the team gets a $4,000 set
of Mac tools on the day they're paroled.
And the clock starts now!

Welcome to Folsom State Prison.

The outlaw Jesse James walks through the gates
of California's most famous detention center.
And to everyone's surprise, it's of his own free will.
[doors slam]
[door buzzes]

- One the wrong move, and we're all staying.
[rock music]
- [Presenter] He's here to accomplish one historic mission.
Build a monster with a team of fabricators
all doing hard time at Folsom State Prison.
[dramatic ambience]

- It is crazy for me to think about
because looking back in my life
and how much trouble I've been in,
and man, I could easily just might as well be in here
with all these guys.
[rock music]
Our whole life is based off second chances.
You know?
And you get lots of them and it's up to you
to whether you're gonna capitalize on it or not.
[rock music]
[door sliding]
- [Presenter] Fabricator and body specialist,
Saul Marquez from Central California.
Sentence: seven years for armed robbery.
[hard rock music]
Eric Schneider, engine specialist
from San Bernardino, California.
Sentence: 14 years for drug manufacturing.
[hard rock music]
Jose Corral was busted for having a chop shop
in San Bernardino, California.
Sentence: four years.
[hard rock music]
Flavius Knox left the g*ng life for prison life.
This welder is in Folsom for as*ault.
Sentence: six years.
[hard rock music]
And Samuel Paget is a motor mechanic
from Sacramento, California.
Sentence: five years for drug trafficking.
These men will build it after they design it
with help from incarcerated amateur artist Chad Anderson.
[blues music]
- This is kind of cool, I think.
I haven't seen too many 69s that have been done.
You know, I always thought it was a cool looking car
and cool looking top with that V back windshield.
But this basically, I mean,
we're building a whole car from scratch.
I'd probably assume that everything's junk on it.
So we just gotta go over everything
and make sure it runs and works.
- All you need to do is just direct us,
point us out what you need to be done and if I-
- Yeah, I think first things first, we just take it apart.
You know, get the fenders off and get everything opened up
and see what we have to work with.
- [Inmate] You gonna do hydraulics
or are you just gonna do a slam suspension?
- We'll do airbags.
- Yeah. Airbags. - Yeah.
- Sweet. - That way you can lay it out.
You pull up somewhere and you drop it on the frame.
Then no one can steal it.
[inmates laugh]

- April 29.
- Maybe we will come get you. [indistinct]

- Just cut it up and, you know, get to work.
Bring out the grinders and the plasma cutter, you know.

- [Presenter] To test their newly acquired
automotive skills, the team will
rip everything out of the Impala
and correct the body's many imperfections.
Then clean out the stock suspension to make room for airbags
so she'll slam to the ground.
Finally drop in a 350 motor and trans
so Jesse can run like the wind.
[pencil scratching]

Day two.

- [Jesse] All right, you guys cool?
- [Inmate] Yep.
- Let's just spend the whole day getting,
the rest of the day getting it all apart
and get it up, get the wheels off it,
get all the seats and stuff out of it
and basically see what we have to work with.
- Alright? - Cool. Alright.

- There's the coat hanger from
when it was first broken into.
[both chuckle]

- [Inmate] Woo hoo!
- Gotta shave the door handles off.

Everybody was saying what a hunk of [censored]
it looked like.
It's not really that bad.
I'm telling you.
This is all probably stuff we could use too.
This is good, the drive shaft was in there, in the trunk.

What kind of transmission we gonna use?

- [Presenter] Eric Schneider is a born and bred mechanic.
- I grew up from a pretty young age working at
a family's automotive business.
Anything with the engine in it, gears, wheels, I love it.
- [Presenter] Although he was highly skilled,
married, and the father of three kids,
Eric got involved with drugs.
He has now served six of a 14 year sentence
for manufacturing.
- Oh no, I deserve to be here.
I can't deny that.
Took me a few years to accept that.
It's terrible.
But I'm lucky.
I've got a great family,
and they put up with a lot of crap from me over the years
and they've hung in there with me,
and they're waiting for me to come home
and that keeps me going.
[dramatic whooshing]

- [Presenter] Late on their first day,
the prison g*ng is already acting like a seasoned team.
This could be any hardcore garage
except for a few reminders.
[steam whistle blows]
- So that's just once an evening that goes off?
- Yeah, they do it at 4:30 in the afternoon
is the last count.
I mean, they do counts but they don't use the the whistles.
- [Presenter] While the rest of the prison is locked up,
these builders are happy to be working on a beat up Impala.
- [Jesse] What would you guys be doing right now
if we weren't doing this?
- Laying on my bunk, watching TV.
- [Jesse] You guys got TVs?
- Yep. Little 13 inchers.
Better than nothing, though.
- You guys got cable?
- Basic. Basic TV.
We don't get the Discovery Channel.
- No? [chuckles]
I like these guys.
They don't wanna stop working. [chuckles]
'Cause if you stop working,
you have to go back to your jail cell. [chuckles]

- [Presenter] At the end of the first day,
Jesse feels good about the monster-to-be.

Day three: the men go to pick up their tools,
but the California Department of Corrections
has everything under strict supervision.
- Being that it's prison, we have to check out the tools
and then they all have to be inventoried
at the end of the day.
Everything's inventoried.
Well, you know, cunning convicts
could make a weapon out anything.
So they want to keep track of everything.
Make sure everything's in its place.
- This cabinet here, we keep locked all the time.
And as you can see from looking into it,
you'll see the type of things that are in there.
[keys jangle]
[rock music]
- [Presenter] With tools checked out, the crew gets to work.
First order of business,
clean out the Impala's stock suspension
to make room for some airbags.
- I'm doing what they're asking me to do
'cause I don't know what the hell I'm doing down here.
I'm just trying to have fun.
[engine roars]
- [Presenter] Flavius Knox claims to know nothing
when working in the garage,
- You asking the wrong person.
I don't know how long it's gonna take.
If I get up in here and act like I know what I'm doing,
I'm gonna tear something up.
- [Presenter] But it's all hype.
- Don't believe the hype.
He's a certified welder and learned the trade
here at Folsom State Prison.
You just show the plans, I can do this.
- [Presenter] But Flavius wasn't always so motivated.
Three years ago he was busted for g*ng related as*ault.
- If I hadn't came to prison when I did,
I'd either be dead or I'd be in here for life.
So it's kind of a blessing
that I did come when I did get here, you know.
Bow my main focus is my daughter.
But I'm not trying to be separated from her no more.
See, my daughter comes up to see me
and now she's getting old enough to where
when she leaves she starts crying.
That tears me up, man.
She loves her daddy.
She loves her daddy.
That's my sweet pea.

- [Presenter] A prison sentence is a waiting game,
but this monster won't wait.
- We're gonna take the front springs out
and best way to do that is put a floor jack underneath,
keep the spring compressed
so it doesn't fly out in your face.
The springs are coming out,
airbags are gonna go in there in place of them.

- [Thom] So you're disassembling it all?
- Yes.
- [Thom] Do you have experience in disassembling cars?
- Yes, I do.
As a matter of fact, I do.
[dramatic whooshing]
- [Presenter] Jose Corral
was busted for running a chop shop.
But his specialty was unique.
He stole large.
- Mainly dismantling commercial vehicles.
I always like to work on trucks.
I just like the engine, you know, the power they got.
[dramatic whooshing]
- [Presenter] But the power of quick cash
cost him his freedom and his happiness.
- When I came in here, I was just totally out, man.
In my head, I just didn't give a [censored] about the world.
I had never felt so depressed in my life.
- [Presenter] But with the help of
Folsom's vocational welding program,
Corral sees a way to change his life.
- My instructor EZ, he's been everything for me.
He's taught me how to think, open up your eyes.
You know, you have a lot going for you, you're young.
You know, learn this trade is gonna help, you know.
And he's right, you know, and I've come a long ways
toward the person I was when I just came in here.
- Yeah, that's good.
- [Jose] I'm just happy, you know, to know
what my goal is and which way to go now.
[dramatic whooshing]
I never worked on a car this month,
but it's a piece of cake.
- [Presenter] With some room made underneath
the team gets their first parts delivery.
A set of retractable airbags and some floor panels.
- Got some airbags.
Got some airbags, all their little fixtures here.
Some lead springs.
- Hold 'em. - These little pumps here.
[dramatic whooshing]
[deep bass rock music]
- [Presenter] Just behind the delivery
rolls in the outlaw himself
and goes straight to the airbag kit for inspection.
- Has it got back rear brackets?
Yeah. - Yeah.
- [Thom] So you're gonna make some cups
with that six inch pipe?
- Yeah. - Brackets.
- [Presenter] Here's how they'll work.
Each wheel suspension point gets an airbag
and is connected to an air tank in the trunk.
[electronic music]
With the flick of a switch,
air instantly inflates the bags, raising the car,
then release the air to drop it.
But Jesse wants the Impala to drop to the asphalt.
And for that to happen, the frame needs to be modified.
- We're gonna have to make a notch here
and then cut out the center of the floor
so the drive shaft goes through.
And then we're gonna have to C-notch this frame,
which means put a big, you know, half round notch
and weld it in the frame so the rear end, you know,
is gonna actually go up into the frame
to get a little bit more space.
There's that motor.
- Huh? - Huh?
- That's it.
That's what you've been waiting for, man.
[deep bass rock music]
- [Presenter] In rolls The power of the beast.
A three 50 small block and automatic transmission.

Got everything ready to go.

- [Presenter] As Jesse carves space for the axle,
the team hammers out their priorities.
Marquez and Corral slice out the rotted floor
while Flavius, Paget, and Eric
focus on connecting transmission to motor for installation.
- This car. - Good.
[torches hissing]

[metal clanks]
- Not used to not having my switchblade. [chuckles]
I keep like reaching for her.
[Jesse sighs]
- [Presenter] After torching away frame,
how low will she go?
[torch hissing]
[tense music]
- Hey Eric.
You think that's low enough?
[Jesse chuckles]
- Oh, yeah.
Yeah, that's low enough.
- Or we should lower it. [chuckles]
- I'm thinking that's pretty good.
[both chuckle]
That is seriously slammed right there.
[both chuckling]
- Damn! - Excellent.
- Yeah. - Man, see.
You supposed to be putting the car together here
then letting one of us drive it on the yard
and have a straight side show.
[screams]
- [Jesse] He thinks he's Sylvester Stallone, huh?

- [Presenter] With the low rider slammed to the ground,
the engine and tr*nny can't sag,
but their confidence rides hide.
- I know what I'm doing. Yeah.
'Cause I mean I felt outta my element
with a lot of this other stuff,
but with this stuff, you know.

- [Presenter] The Folsom showed him how to work on engines.
Wrenching was in his blood.

- My dad was a mechanic
and my grandfather had a like a wrecking yard
and I guess I got a mind to just
figure things out for myself.
- [Presenter] Folsom programs
have not only taught him mechanical skills,
but has also given the reclusive Paget
some much needed self-confidence.
- I've gotten my own self-esteem
like I am worth something to people
and how to be myself around people.
- [Presenter] Now Paget skills are put to the test
when he and the team slide in the motor tran setup.
- This thing's gonna be slammed.
So we gotta get it bolted up,
see how it looks from underneath.
- [Paget] I'm gonna go ahead and get a under there.
- Forwards. - Get the oil pan.
- [Paget] Yeah, just go down just a little bit.

We got 24 hours to put stuff together.

There's nothing that distracts our mind, you know.

- [Presenter] Saul Marquez is this crew's
jack of all trades.
From welding to wiring, he can do it all with style.

- I like anything that has to do with
any type of artistic look.
- [Presenter] His skills created
a comfortable life for his family.
A comfortable life that was hard to lose.
- I was running my own business,
custom decks and patios, had my own house,
you know, making a mortgage of $1,800 a month.
Just it was a weekend, you know,
ended up in the wrong neighborhood, wrong people.
Boom. That's it.
Doesn't take much.

- [Presenter] While incarcerated,
he has come to terms with the path that led him to Folsom.
- It's done.
You know, I'm not, it's gone.
But doesn't mean I can't start all over again.
- [Presenter] For Marquez, part of starting over
is taking advantage of opportunities
while paying his debt to society.
- I'm not saying that prison
is a place you should come and learn,
but this is where I learned how to read and write.
I didn't learn in a school, I didn't learn in elementary.
I didn't. I learned it in prison.

the team's on schedule.

Jesse starts to install the front airbags
while the rest of the team focuses on wiring
for the motor, the airbag system, and everything else.

- That's pretty funny that having my own TV show
is pretty close to being in jail.

to see the criminal inside these hardworking men.
- My emotions have ran the gauntlet this week.

Like we were over in the license plate shop
and just cruising around
and the one guy over there
that's like the best fabricator over there,
you know, it's this instant like
association with each other.
We have this thing in common that we both love
to weld and make stuff.
I feel bad for him.
But then I found out he's in here
for like multiple counts of battery.
Been in here for 15 years
and he's gonna be here the rest of his life.
So, and you know, I don't know what kind
of emotions I'm supposed to feel.
Life is too short to screw up that bad.
You know, you may have all the opportunity
in the world in front of you, but you might miss it.

so he'll have to piece together scraps.

- It's always a drag when you gotta say goodbye,

you know, I could easily swap places with any one
of these dudes and I can't really, I don't know,
I mean, I guess hard work is the miracle cure
for everything in my life.
This isn't the most skilled crew we've had,
but without a doubt, out of all
the Monster Garage build teams,
this one's got the most work ethic.

sketched out a farewell to Folsom Prison.

- No.
[Jesse laughs]
- You wanna go for a little ride?
- Yeah. - Let's go.
[Jesse grunts]
[doors close]
[engine revs]
- [Announcer] A quick joy ride for Paget, but not for long.
- [Jesse] So long, suckers. [laughs]
- [Announcer] 'Cause Jesse's got no time for prison guards,
jail cell bars, or his own rehabilitation.
He's got metal to burn, sparks to fly.
