we're on the sidewalk!

...but only a select few
are bitchin' rides.

Kevin: there's that whole stable
full of cars, for sure.

Yeah, let's
take the cadillac.

And let's take the pontiac.

We have a blast building
these cars,

But even more so,
we love showing them off.

So, I was doing some research
and the cadillac

Would be the best one

To try and get
"custom of the year" finalist.

Loveland's a great show,

And there's some
pretty special picks

That happen at this one
for big awards to end the year.

And this is the last show that
they'll be picking it at.

Woman:
oh, that's cool.

When this 1960 cadillac
first pulled into the shop...

Whoa! Holy smokes.

...it was pretty much
a big hunk of metal

With a lot of potential.

From head to toe, from top
to bottom, to inside and out,

We modified almost
every single panel on this car

To create what we know today
as the copper caddy.

True custom.

True-blue custom.

The 1960 cadillac
has showed so good

At all of these indoor shows,

But one of our favorite things
is the outdoor shows,

And what better than to go there
and win something big?

Cool.
What else we got?

Is don heidt
coming to the show?

Yeah.
I think the pontiac

Would probably do
pretty good there.

Yeah, well if don's there
I'd love to enter it, you know?

Now that's what
I call dynamic.

Dave, that is dynamic!

This pontiac is almost
as dynamic as its owner, don.

But it didn't always
used to be that way.

Dave:
well, we're rolling.

Did he believe that this was
in good shape?

We took a pile of rust,

Like one or two bolts --
mainly rust --

And we turned it into
a dream pontiac mobile.

Yeah, let's definitely
enter it, and heck,

He could probably help us out
by cleaning it.

Right.

Which he's
pretty good at.

And maybe I'll bring him a treat
if he does a good job.

which you probably should,

I think this pontiac's a shoo-in
for a huge award.

If we want the copper caddy
and the '52

To do any good at this show

We got to make sure
that they're spot on.

That means cleaning down
to the very finest details,

Even underneath,
even where they won't see.

What's up, buddy?

How's she look?
The little bit driving,

She's kind of dusty.

Probably just do
a nice deep clean on it

Just to make sure
all the dust

And nooks and crannies
are all cleaned up.

Cool. Yeah.
A little bit of stuff

Right there, but...

You need to finish up
the bottom of it.

Let's just
double check it.

I mean, it's not gonna be up on,
you know, on stands out there,

But if they stick
their head under there --

Yeah, I'd like them
clean anyways.

You know,
the cleaner the better.

Yep.

That and I just got
a couple things on the top side.

I just need
to kind of look at them

And address them.
Yeah.

Well, let's pull it down
and take a look at it

And see what you want to do.
Okay.

When we take
these cars to show

They represent
the kindig-it design name.

They represent everybody
in the shop.

So, we want to make sure
that they're clean,

They're as perfect
as they can be for the show.

Whether we win
or lose these cars

Need to look their very best.

Couple little superficial
scratches right here

Just around
the door handle.

You can probably
just hand-rub out.

Yeah, so,
that one little spot

That I've noticed it looks like
they go through right there.

There's no paint left.

Right on the corner of that.

It is one of those things
that, for me,

It stands out every time

You go to grab the handle,
you can see it, you know?

To the untrained eye, most
people would not even notice

Any of the flaws
that we've seen.

But the judges and us,
we both know what's best.

It's all in the details.

We'll put like a light glaze
on it before we take it.

And then, like I said,
we'll look over the whole.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

I got to take this.

It's good. Guy's calling to say
we've already won.

We haven't even
got there yet.

This is dave.

Did dave really need
to take that call?

He acts like it's jay leno
on the other line.

Well, I guess
I'm on my own.

It's probably best
anyways.

While dave spent the morning
talking to who knows who,

I spent the morning inspecting
the caddy and it's ready to go.

We don't want to
repaint the whole car,

So enrique's just gonna
mask off the section we need,

And then we will re-clear
the entire panel

So we don't have any lines.

Dave: the caddy's headed
in the right direction.

Now we just got to
catch up the pontiac.

This is
the '52 cadillac bumper.

I know this isn't
a cadillac bumper.

That's not what I meant.

I must be doing something
I've already done.

[ Laughs ]
this is the '52 pontiac bumper.

Why am I smiling?

'Cause it's déjà vu
all over again.

I did this exact same thing
to this bumper...yesterday.

I'm filling all the low spots

With lead that we could
get good access to.

When the bumper came back
for the '52 pontiac

We noticed a couple
of really minor flaws,

But they were still flaws.

But now is the perfect time
to attack it.

Kris: come down here,
do the same thing.

Have to go around the edges here
and fix all these imperfections.

Dave: to most people they would
never in a million years notice

What we did,
but it's important to us.

If it's not right,
we got to fix it.

We'll see how close it is.

Hopefully I don't have to do
anything else to it,

And it can just go to the
chrome shop and get chromed.

The imperfections
are now perfections.

Time to put it on,
see if everything works.

We're good there?

Uhh...is this
a trick question?

Nope.
Hmm.

Kris: it's gonna get sent off
to get chromed,

So we got to put it on
and make sure everything's okay.

Chris has removed
the bumper and fixed

All of the imperfections.

Now he just needs to refit it

And make sure
it hasn't changed shape.

This, this bumper, it's a rear.
It's a rear bumper.

This is the very first time
I've ever put a rear bumper on.

Nice.
He's only done

Fronts and sides.
That's right.

Since I've done this exact thing
to this same bumper,

I got to do something
to make it fun.

I am so excited about
putting this bumper on.

-That is so cool.

Uhhh...is this
a trick question?

Nope.
Hmm.

At first glance this bumper is
not sitting where it needs to.

Did you put
the washers on?

No. I can't hold it and reach
at the same time.

Dave: well, that explains that!

If you put all the brackets
in the wrong place

And the washers
in the wrong place,

It's probably not gonna fit.

Yeah, let's go
your way just a little bit.

If we can go that way
just a tad.

Okay, this way
just a little then.

Right there?

I think we're good
right there.

With everything back in place,
and it fits perfect,

It's time to send it
back for chroming.

While the guys finish up
on the caddy

And the pontiac
for the loveland car show,

I got another
special surprise for them.

This '66 chevelle showed up
actually for upholstery work.

Well, the guy found out
where it was going,

Knew that we were capable
of making something run,

But before we get started on it
justin's gonna go ahead

And knock out some
of the upholstery.

Justin's gonna do some
really trick fabrication

On the inside of this thing.

It's going all black leather.

But to tie in with the brushed
finish on the wheels

And some of the other details,
he's gonna do a little bit

Of brushed-aluminum finishes
for the trim.

There is a trick
to putting these in

And that's why I punch
the whole first

Because just going
in drilling the hole

You're taking the chance,
first of all,

Of just hooking the leather up

And it wadding up on you.

Drilling through this
and pulling the bit back out

It seems to suck
the wood up through

And we didn't want
to get chunks of wood

In between the leather
and the foam

'Cause it'll give it
a not so good look.

Looks good.

The whole back half's
gonna look really nice.

Let's go to lunch.

This is gonna pay
for lunch.

For me.
You. Not for me?

Dave: the door panels and seats
that justin has put together

For the '66 looks awesome.

It really matches in
with the wheels.

But before he wraps up,
I think we'll go ahead

And grab that car from him
and get it running.

No wiring.

Dave: there's no wiring
under the dash?

I have everything finished
except the dash,

And I didn't do anything
on the dash itself

Because I didn't know if we were
gonna move some stuff around.

This car is basically
a shell with a motor.

There's no
a.c. Condenser.

There's no
electric fans.

The wiper motor
needs to be put on.

And then all of the engine
needs to be wired and fired.

There's no exhaust.

It's a bunch
of little stuff, huh?

A bunch of little stuff, but
it's all very important stuff

To make it work correctly.
[ Laughs ]

There's no air-charge tube,
either.

Dave: first things first --
we need to build

A brand-new air-inlet tube.

Let's get a list together
of all the stuff

That needs to be done
to get it running.

Okay. And when
you guys are done,

I'll just take the car
and button up the dash,

And at that point, hopefully,
it's just turnkey and ship it.

I love it when a plan
comes together.

I'm really excited
to get going on this car.

When does he need it?
In a week?

Yesterday?
I'm just kidding.

Oh, he's got a hot-rod
emergency, does he?

That seems to be
going around.

Now that we're
on the same page,

Let's get this car running
right and looking right.

Hey, so they've been doing
a ton of work on this car,

But I need an intake
built for it.

Kevin: this car has a super
big-block in it.

I'm super excited
to get it to dyno,

But before we can do that, we
need to build a custom intake.

And he wants something, I think,
to kind of go like this,

Get those intakes out
from in front of the radiator.

And then have the filters
out here in the corners?

Yeah, kind of match it

'Cause you got
some hoses out here

So you're not gonna be
able to go crazy deep.

And then just watch
the clearances on the hood.

That'll be a little bit
of a tight fit.

Yeah, definitely.

I told him to build it like
to spider legs off the front,

And it's gonna suck air
through a spider leg.

It's gonna be awesome.

All right. Sounds good.
All right, buddy.

Yeah.

Dave: building the pipes
for this inlet tube

Is very important to make
the cuts just right,

But there's one more big step
that we have to do

Before we go and weld it.

Greg:
I'm putting the tinfoil in here,

And that'll tell me
how high the distance

Is between the hood
so I don't make this intake

And it hits the hood
when you close it.

It should crush it down and
leave it there, so let's see.

Tinfoil is an effective
measuring tool.

It actually helps me...
Read other people's brain waves.

[ Whirring! ]

I have about three inches.

The tube is 3.5 inch,
so that means

I have to put about
an inch notch in that tube.

So, right now,
greg is gonna talk about

Working on cars, tubes,

Measurements,
things of that nature.

That'll set it a little lower
so when the hood is down,

There's plenty of clearance
and it won't chip the paint.

Hold on. Greg is now talking
about...

Pedicures?

Facials?
I didn't see that coming.

Wait a minute.

I think there's gonna be
something about me

Being a great inspiration
in his life.

Um.

Every type of metal has
its own special characteristics

When you go to weld it,

But aluminum takes
a little bit more technique

And a little bit more knowledge.

So, what this does is it
kind of shows me

The projected line
where they'll split.

I can't really have any gaps
with the aluminum.

When you weld aluminum it kind
of burns away if there's a gap,

So I got to make it
a really tight fit.

Dave:
this is the final piece

That you're gonna see when
you open up the engine bay,

So we want to make them
very organic

Using all of the room that
we can, but make it awesome.

Now let's hope it works
and fits just as we planned.

Dave:
greg's put a lot of time and
thought into this air intake.

Now let's see if it actually
looks good and works well.

Hi.

How's it going, greg?
It's going good.

I was trying to read his mind
so we could skip past this part,

But I didn't have my hat on.
It was in the other office.

[ Sighs ] so, enjoy.

I got this thing
pretty well dialed.

I think
it's ready for paint.

The hood clearance
is good?

That's probably
the biggest thing.

Yeah, it's got like
three-quarters of an inch.

It doesn't look like
it's gonna, but --

I know, right? 'Cause
it's, like, above the radiator.

Yeah.
That's crazy.

And I made sure our air filters
cleared and everything.

Got plenty of room.

And we got it all mounted
to the inner fender wells?

Yeah.
So, it mounts in two spots

So it won't have a lot
of pressure on here.

The air intake
looks perfect.

The functionality is
all there.

Now let's
make it look pretty.

I'll go give it
to my favorite guy.

Sweet. What,
I'm not your favorite guy?

I meant on that side.
Oh, all right, cool.

Geezy-geez.

When it comes down to it,
a fresh coat of paint

Is the spice of life.

The perfect color for the intake
on this chevelle is black.

Why?
Because the car's black.

Now we just need to double check

And make sure it still fits
in its new home.

My plan is here is to
install this intake tube,

And I need to get
the silicone boot on here

And...also orient the clamp

So you don't see any
of the worm gears on the clamp.

That looks good.

Greg engineered this intake
to be a very tight fit,

That way we maximize
all the extra room

That we have under this hood.

It should go in
without a problem.

All right.

Let's see if she fits.

It's really nice that they made
this one out of aluminum.

It's really lightweight.

Well...

It don't fit.

I'll just have to manipulate
a few little things,

And it should go in.

I'm gonna have to take off
the silicone boot

And I put it on
the intake tube first.

It generally doesn't work the
way you want it the first time.

So, now, with this boot,
I'll put it on the tube first.

Adjust the boot
to the throttle body.

Like a glove.

Now that the intake's in,

I've got to align
the clamps perfectly,

Install the air filters.

This thing should be good to go.

There is a kindig-it design
intake tube installed.

Done.

Onto the next.

Dave: now our focus
shifts to the bottom of the car.

All we're starting out with
is a brand new set of headers.

We got to build the rest
of the exhaust.

Well, sweet. So, we got headers,
and that's it.

We're gonna take advantage
of all of the space we have

Underneath this chevelle
to make sure that we get

All the performance
that we can get.

Obviously, come out,
keep it as tight as you can.

Once you come into here
you're probably at some point

Gonna want to cross
over into the center.

Keep it real tight
to the drive shaft.

We'll put
the mufflers here.

Okay.
This is getting cutouts.

And other than that,
I think we're good.

One of the bigger challenges
is the muffler placement,

Making sure that we can get it
exactly where it needs to be.

I'm trying to keep everything
tucked up nice and tight.

Dave: by optimizing all
of the room underneath the car,

We were able to put
the mufflers at an angle,

Which allowed us a little bit
more room for some cutouts.

[ Chuckles ]

In the interest of performance,
I try to keep it as much

Of a straight-line path
as possible for the cutout.

You know, most of these cars,

It's a pleasure of noise
kind of thing.

From the sound
to the performance

And the overall aesthetics,

This car is really starting
to come together.

But before this chevelle
is ready for delivery,

There's one major thing that
still needs to be wrapped up --

The interior.

It's a completely
reworked custom dash.

We had gauges built,
and then went in

And finished building out
the whole dash

With the contour and everything,

And then it was painted,
and then we added the metal

To match the rest
of the project.

At this point
the entire interior

Looks like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Everything's
finished on it.

We just got to
put it back together.

Very nice.

Fits perfect.

Okay, sergio, would you
please bring me the seat?

Get it cleaned up, detailed up,
vacuumed, we're close.

everything just fits.

that we did under the hood here.

You didn't have
an air-charge tube,

So we wanted to do something
that was symmetrical,

That, you know,
looked good.

It's just nice and clean.

Mike: it is super clean.

I love what you did
with that part of it.

Basically this is
all business in here.

I mean, it really
just looks k*ller.

We've showed mike
the business end,

The interior, but there's
one more important thing

That he really needs
to check off.

What is the significance
of elvira?

Last july, my mom passed away,
and, uh...

It was a tough deal for us,

And we were in the process
of building this car,

And I thought what a better way
to pay tribute to her

Than to name
this car after her?

Elvira was her
given name from germany.

She's a german lady.

And I just thought
it was the perfect way

To pay tribute to her.
Yeah.

That means a lot to us,
then, too, yeah.

It gives me goose bumps
right now

Because looking at that
and seeing what this car is

And what she meant to me,

It just makes my day, and I know
she's smiling down right now

Just kind of giggling
a little bit.

You know what?
We're glad to be a part of that.

You know, it means
a lot to us, too, so.

She was a strong woman.
This is a strong car.

And, really, if somebody
didn't know the story behind it,

definitely one of our favorites.

well-known builders.

I just hope our cars
stand out the best.

very early this morning

And certainly for us.

It was time to get the cars out,
get them cleaned up,

And get them over
in the builders' choice area.

trying to get all of the dust

on the hood.

Dave: cleaning these cars
is a huge job.

I got a new employee.

stacking up here,

And if the owner wants to come

The theme, the fit, the finish,

I think the cadillac
has the potential of doing

Really well
in the show itself,

But there's one award
that we're very interested

In trying to get, and that's
one of the finalist spots

For custom rod of the year.

There's a lot
of really cool stuff here,

So the competition's gonna be
steep but it should be good.

Dave: I think this is about as
good as it's gonna get.

I know that I said

autocross is a cool course,

And they get these crazy,
k*ller handling cars,

And they go around these cones
as fast as they can.

I mean, it's just intense.

It's like a big man's go kart.

There's so many
cool cars over here.

I saw this one ripping around.

It just handles.

And you can put the groceries
in the back.

after it gets on the road.

...don and I decided it was best
if we pulled the plug,

And he would
finish it himself.

It was an effort, but we got it.

I love the fact that you use
the '37 headlights still.
