Welcome to Joey's casino.

Why did I let you drag me here

I barely know
the first thing about gambling.

Pretending
Monaco is a dream, huh?

I have seen you take girls who
were not traditionally beautiful

We're gonna start at the bar,

loosen up a bit, and then see

Okay. I had a conversation with
Leslie about Laura's accident.

Okay. What'd she say?

Listen for yourself.

KAT [recorded]:
So you're admitting it?

Eva ran Laura off the road.

LESLIE [recorded]:
You're as right about that

as you've been
about everything else.

Everything Eva has done

is a direct result
of the way you raised her.

She grew up fatherless.

-She had a stepfather.
-She needed you.

How could I have known
you kept her?

Why wouldn't I?

She was a souvenir of our love.

So is that your way
of punishing her?

I never would do such a thing.

How could you look at that face

and not want to cherish
and protect her?

Every time I looked in her eyes,

I saw you.

And I wanted you to see

that perfect little human
that we made.

Count her tiny toes.

Spoil her.

You think I don't love Eva?

[scoffs softly]

I love her so much it hurts.

Because she's a reminder
of the love I lost.

The life I would have had.

You said
you ended the pregnancy.

Hmm. Yeah.

First and last time
I told you a lie.

But how many lies
did you lay on me, Teddy?

[scoffs]

On your wife?

Your son?

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

[chuckles]

Ooh, next to you, baby,
I am squeaky clean.

All I know is Eva is a victim
of a deranged mother.

[chuckles softly]

What can I say except...

you're right.

So Martin wasn't talking about
postponing for a few years?

He's taken a bid
for the presidency

completely off the table?

Even if he planned
to temporarily pause

his pursuit
of a presidential bid,

he would still have to be
engaged in activities

to keep him
in the political spotlight

and position himself
as a viable candidate.

Everybody knows
that running for president

takes long-term preparation.

And even a pause can't mean
stepping back completely

away from the groundwork.

What reason has Martin given
for changing his mind?

He said he wants to be there
for me and the kids.

He doesn't want to turn
our lives upside down.

-Plausible.
-Yes. But when I gave him

those exact same reasons before,

he convinced me
that I was wrong.

Well, what's changed
in your lives?

Other than Martin's father
admitting to having an affair

and Martin finding out

that he had a sister
he never knew about,

status quo.

Hmm. Interesting.

If you don't count
the nightmares.

-Should I be worried?
-[phone beeps]

Oh, it's Vanessa.
I asked her to come by.

Um, I can tell her to come back.

-No, no, no. No, that's fine.
-Are you sure?

Yeah. Yeah, I just... I wanted
to bounce some ideas off of you,

and we can do that anytime.

I'll give it some thought
and we'll talk soon?

Count on it.

[gasps] Smitty!

I wish I could stay,
but looks delicious.

Don't I though?

[chuckles] Love you.

I love you back.

Bye, Vanessa.

Something I said?

We were family.

Before the divorce.

And the affair.

Look, my point is, we were
a part of each other's lives.

And I know
it won't happen overnight,

but I'm hoping
that, one day soon,

we'll all be able to put
our differences behind us.

"Differences"?

Look, Anita, Ted's actions
were his alone, okay?

He set this wheel in motion,
not me.

If you're looking
for forgiveness,

you have a lot more work to do.

Forgiveness?

I... never considered that
within the realm of possibility,

but I'll take that into
consideration moving forward.

Also, requesting an appointment
before showing up unannounced

and uninvited
would also be advisable.

I'll keep that in mind, too.

Do.

Bye, Bill.

VERNON:
Huh.

You didn't slam the door
and leave him reduced to tears.

The Jarvises were pulling up.
I didn't want to cause a scene.

That man makes me so angry.

Take that fire
and use it for good.

Call an old friend.

Last time I tried this,
it went nowhere.

You didn't mention that.

What happened?

I called Sharon.

She picked up the phone,

didn't say a word
and hung up on me.

I have to admit, that hurt.

So why would I set myself up
again by calling Tracy?

You don't have to pick up
that phone.

Thank you.

Use the house phone.

Same old number,
one she recognizes.

What, and just call
out of the blue?

Saying what, uh,
"Life is short--

let's relive our glory days"?

Why not?

It's been decades, Vernon.

What, are you afraid
they've forgotten you?

I seriously doubt it.

Why are you so invested
in making this concert happen?

Because...

when I'm onstage
making my speeches,

you're in the audience,

smiling at me like I'm 25.

I know how it feels.

'Cause when you got up there
the other night--

granted, it was just karaoke
with the family--

you were radiant.

Well, I'm a long way from 25.
[chuckles]

You have so much talent
inside of you,

burnished and refining.

What are you saving it for?

Huh?

Maybe Tracy and Sharon have
been waiting on this phone call

for years.

It just isn't that easy.

Like impossible
ever stopped you.

When Jim Price made that offer,

your immediate reaction was,

"I'd like to do it
with the girls."

But if that's too much trouble,

I'm sure Jim could set up
a solo tour for you.

You were the star.

Everybody came out to see you.

You had a successful career
without them.

You could do it again.

If you had to.

LESLIE [recorded]:
See, you imagine it,

but you don't have any proof.

No witnesses,

no records, no motorcycle.

And I'm sure
you do not expect me

to testify
against my own daughter.

Mm-mm.

So, basically,

you got nothing.

Leslie thinks
we don't have proof

that Eva tried to k*ll Laura.

Everything you need
to put her away.

Those were
some pretty damning statements.

Well, what do we do next?

You go and arrest her? Or
does Eva have to confess? Or--

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

Hang on, Kat. Not so fast.

Six pounds, five ounces.

That's how much she weighed.

Came in the middle of the night.

My God, I've never felt
that kind of pain.

Pain not just from labor but...

because I was very lonely.

Hmm.

I prayed.

I wished
that you would track me down

and find us.

Tell me that...

you couldn't live without me.

And when you saw
our beautiful baby...

you'd fall in love.

And Eva would have a daddy.

I'm sorry you were so alone.
I...

So was I.

[chuckles softly]

I couldn't stop crying.
Neither could she.

I didn't know where to turn to.

I didn't know...

who to turn to.

But, well, of course,

there was Bill.

And what he would have done.

-Had I known about the baby, I--
-Yeah.

Well, see, that's the part...

right there, that's the part
that-that hurts the most.

I knew you didn't want
us living like that, so...

I spared you, Ted.

So that you could live happy
with your real family.

[clears throat]

Listen.

I've done some things that...

...I really wish I hadn't.

Eva was a blessing though.

Yeah.

And now...

Now, Ted, we're giving you a
second chance to do right by us.

Irrefutable proof right here.

You heard it
from Eva's own mother.

She could say
she was being sarcastic.

When she implicated her daughter
in an attempted m*rder?

Hearsay. They'd have
to prove an exception

against the prohibition
to the hearsay law,

and that's difficult to do.

Uh, I know
they're up to something.

Leslie just admitted it.

[clicks tongue]
Okay, what do I do next?

Would you ignore me
if I tell you to let it go?

I'll send you
a copy of the recording.

Listen to it again. For me?

I don't know if this is smoke or
if it's an actual fire, but...

they are the only people
who would benefit

from Laura being hurt.

And you've got no qualms
about the fact

that you and Eva are related?

Just because we have the same
father does not make us family.

Wrong is still wrong.

Unless I missed something
in current events.

JACOB:
Well, I don't have the best

track record when it comes
to mixing family with work.

We'll just pretend
we're strangers. I do.

Do you know
how annoying you can be?

Yeah, I've heard that before.
Thanks.

[chuckles]

MAN [over P.A.]:
Dr. Thompson to room 315.

Email the recording?

On its way.

Thanks, Jacob.

I'll be in touch.

We're family. It's inevitable.

June's surgery's over?

So soon?

MAN [over P.A.]:
Nurse Hugo to ICU.

Doc. I hope
you got some good news.

Everything went well.

Our colleagues are closing.

We have antibiotics flowing,

and the prognosis is good.

Oh, thank goodness.

When can we see her?

She'll be in recovery
until she's able to come back

to the floor,
so shouldn't be that long.

The nurses will help you
with any other concerns.

I'm sorry to do this to you,

-but I have an appointment.
-Oh, of course. Of course.

-This means the world,
Doc, really.
-It's my pleasure to help.

MAN [over P.A.]:
Nurse Johnson to room 315.

-[sighs]: Oh.
-[sighs]

Voilà.

[laughs]

Beginner's luck, huh?

Oh! More drinks?

Well, I couldn't say no to
that nice bartender over there.

-Mmm.
-Did you see her cheekbones?

Did you get her information?

-Why do I ask?
-It's a gift.

-What are we betting on next?
-Okay.

We'll start our agency
in the DMV.

-Mm-hmm.
-Uh, Georgetown.

Adams Morgan.

Uh, then we'll go to New York.

They used to call me Napoleon.

-Let's take Europe.
-Ooh.

Do you remember
the last time we were in Paris?

Feels like a fever dream.

Think it's wise to return?

Let's set up camp in London.
[chuckles]

Mm. Glasgow.

Care to bet?

I thought you'd never ask.

Whatever your name is,

make some dreams come true.

[both laughing]

Here we go. And there's
an entire pie in there

waiting to be devoured.

We can all use
a little decadence occasionally.

Thanks.
And, trust, I will hit it.

But that is not the reason
I asked you to stop by.

What's on your mind?

I'm thinking about
selling the house.

I will handle how I communicate
with Sharon and Tracy

in my own fashion.

You mean, not at all?

The wrong word
with the wrong inflection,

everything could go up
in flames.

It's that deep?

You have no idea.

Back when I was in the business
of brokering peace--

This isn't government affairs.

-It--
-We're not talking about
the Senate.

Evenings at the dinner table,

with Nicole and Dani battling
it out over who's the best band

or which of those raggedy
little boys was the cutest.

[both chuckle]

Well, I know a thing or two

about how to bring people
who love each other--

even though they've forgotten
they have the same goal--

together.

Which Articulette
was the quietest?

Tracy.

The peacemaker.

Churchgoing girl?

Of course.

We all were. Her parents
wouldn't have it any other way.

Remind her of the faith
you shared back then.

Say a little something about
"make a joyful noise,"

"don't hide your light
under a bushel,"

"use your talents
and you multiply them."

Coming together to make music

can be like going to church.

[chuckles softly]

All I'm saying is...

...you got to start somewhere.

Appeal to Tracy's
better angels, hmm?

You got a favorite story
about the two of you?

[chuckles softly]

Where do I begin? [chuckles]

Then give her back
a piece of herself.

A part of Tracy's past that
she thought was gone forever

she can't share with anyone else

but you and Sharon.

Do that,

you'll see her
come running back for more.

Sometimes...

people just can't get past
the past.

And that's what I'm afraid of.

Twice in a week.

Most of Team Dupree keeps
their exposure to once a month.

Mm.

You know, I've always been
fascinated by you, Bill.

Mm. The flattery.

Mm, it's not a big deal.

I'm interested
in a lot of things--

what lives
on the bottom of the ocean,

how many foreign operatives

the CIA currently has
working for them.

[chuckles softly]
Can't help you with that.

And sometimes
it's a little closer to home.

Hmm.

How close?

Martin.

Mm. Hmm.

So what can I tell you
about your husband

that you don't already know?

There's always trouble
in a marriage when one spouse

-starts asking questions
behind the other one's back.
-Mm.

At least that's what my divorce
lawyer friends tell me.

I'm not asking about Martin.

-I'm wondering about you, Bill.
-[chuckles softly]

Look, I'm a busy man.
You have lunches to pack.

-What do you want to know?
-Okay.

A couple days ago,
you said that it was important

for you and Martin
to be on the same team.

You said
that Martin would understand

what you meant by that.

Care to elaborate?

I wouldn't read too much
into it.

What I probably meant was

family's too important
to turn our backs on

simply because we don't agree.

-Mm.
-You know,
to coin a new family motto,

"Friends today, enemies
tomorrow, but family first."

Shall I quote you?

I'd rather you didn't.

What I'm asking, Bill, is:

Is there something

that you don't want
the public to know about?

And does that have something
to do with Martin?

My advice?

Ask your husband.

Because spouses
are so forthcoming.

If recent events
have taught me anything,

it's that certain truths
about the Dupree family

have an ugly way
of making themselves known.

My job,
in addition to packing lunches,

is to protect those that I love.

Martin and I have two very
bright children whom we adore.

-They're great kids.
-Yeah.

They are.

So if you know something
about Martin, it affects me.

If it affects me, it could
affect Samantha and Tyrell.

So I'm asking you, Bill,

from one Dupree outsider
to another,

parent to parent,

if whatever is going on could
affect Martin or my family.

Hi.

Come on in.

June's still a little out of it
from the anesthesia.

Hey, June. Jacob and I are here.

You made it through surgery
like a champ.

The doctor said you'll be fine.

With one hand tied
behind his back.

Some surgeon.

I might have room for a man
like that in my life.

[chuckles] I'll alert his wife.

He fixed my heart.
[chuckles softly]

Got to find somebody suitable
to break it.

Why not the man
who put me back together?

Or we can work on finding you
suitable housing

-so that you can--
-Sorry, babe. I got to go.

Duty calls.

-Okay. Be safe.
-Of course.

Keep up the recovery, June.

We're getting used
to having you around.

You go, too.

No, no, I can stay
a little longer.

Till you fall asleep?

Uh, why don't we let our miracle
patient get some rest.

You understand.

Of course.

We can continue
our conversation later.

I was afraid of that.

DANI:
I get to choose

who decorates the agency.

And if I win,

we change the name of the agency
to "Curtis/Dupree."

You wouldn't.

Scared?

-Oh, you are dangerous.
-[laughs]

You heard the lady.

Deal the cards.

-[gasps]
-Aah!

Hit me.

Doug McBride.

Doug! Come join the game!

Maybe I will in a bit.

Hit me.

Well, I'm surprised to see you.

That could mean
only one of two things--

either you have
the money you owe me

or you have a death wish.

Which is it?

I wanted to let you know

that I went back
into the OR today.

Really?

What poor son of a mother
let you within five feet?

I ought to have
this cast off soon,

and then I'll be able
to work some overtime

and I'll be able to make
the money that I owe you.

Duh.

Even if you start slicing
full-time,

you'll be 80
before you pay off the interest,

let alone the principal.

Come on, man,
you got to be reasonable.

Well, I think I am reasonable.

To let myself be
nickel-and-dimed like this.

I'm starting to think
you don't respect me.

Of course I do.

I'm trying
to work with you, Doug.

Now, I'm gonna say
the quiet part out loud.

I don't want to scare you,

but I gave you a week--

a week-- to pay me back.

Now, how you gonna get yourself
out of this jam?

Sell this house?

There are so many memories here.
Too many.

And with Ted gone,
I want something else.

Something new. You get it.

-Of course.
-Great.

So you'll list it for me?

Not on your life.
[scoffs softly]

Okay. All right, all right.

What do you think
that conversation's about?

Between Doug and Joey Armstrong?

[exhales]
It's Joey's casino, right?

My question is:
What's Doug doing here

-in the middle of the day?
-Mmm.

What are we?

Fair point.

Have you seen
that guy's social media?

-Doug's?
-Mm. Joey's.

He's an amazing cook.

I follow him on Insta.

You should totally check out
his page.

Gorgeous recipes.

And the finished product? Mmm.

Yummy. [grunts] Divine.

-Huh.
-Hit me.

You have been patient.
I'll give you that.

Every man has his limits.

How am I supposed
to come up with--

Well, your wife has an awfully
good head on her shoulders.

Ask her.

You know I can't do that.

Either you call your wife
or I will.

I have a friend.

She advises people who've gone
through traumatic events.

In this case, she'd say

selling this house
might feel like a good idea.

It's a quick fix
to delete memories,

start pain-free elsewhere.

-But a year from now--
-A year from now?

Everyone's giving me a year.

My friend is very, very smart

and gives only the best insight.

You should consider taking it.

A year from now, you still want

to sell this magnificent
piece of real estate,

I'll make both of us a fortune,

and we'll take a road trip,
like we always said we would.

What would I do without you?

Find the perfect friend,
got to keep her around forever.

[laughing]

No.

No, I understand.

Truly, I do.

Of course.

I didn't mean to make you cry.

I'm sorry.

[sniffles] Okay.

Bye now.

Baby, it may not seem like it
right now,

-but everything's
gonna be all right.
-sh**t!

I-I...

I didn't ask her
if she wanted to stay here

or if we should book a hotel.
[sniffles]

Executive decision--
she'll stay here.

Who? What are you talking about?

Tracy. She said yes.

For dinner.

I didn't even mention
the concert. [sniffles]

But she's taking
the train in today.

-Today?
-Why should we wait?

Now, what was her favorite dish?

I wonder if she still likes it.

It has been years,

but she sounded
exactly the same,

like no time has passed.

Vernon, I don't know if this is
gonna take another step further,

but that was the best phone call
of my life.

Why did you let me
waste so much time?

-[chuckling]
-[chuckles] Oh.

Oh, what-what do you think
I should wear?

Now, what am I gonna say
to Tracy when she gets here?

It's been decades.

So much water under the bridge.

You'll figure it out.

You always do.

[chuckles]

You're usually so quick
with an answer, Bill.

Hmm. Do I tell you the truth or
what'll help you sleep at night?

I'm an investigative journalist
in my other life.

-Guess.
-Mm.

Fact is, Smitty,
secrets and lies

are what keep a marriage alive.

Each partner has to maintain
a certain level of deception

in order to keep
both parties happy.

"Yes. Yes, that suit
looks great on you."

"No, I wasn't looking at
that hot guy across the room."

So one should not disclose

when one is having a secret
affair with a family friend?

-[chuckles softly] Mm.
-Secrets like that, Bill?

If Martin does have a secret,

it's not that he wants
an open marriage.

You told him that you two
should be on the same team.

I have friends in high places.

I don't follow.

His political aspirations,
Smitty.

I thought that my connections
could serve Martin well.

Not sure that'll matter anymore.

Why not?

Whatever it is,

I'm sure I'll read about it
in the group chat.

You're no longer in that chat.

Thanks for the coffee.

-Don't you dare open that door.
It's a trap.
-[suspenseful music plays on TV]

[whimpers]

How you gonna fall
over your own feet?

-Oh, Lord. [screams]
-[knocking]

-JACOB: Everything all right?
-Oh.

Okay.

-[exhales]
-[TV turns off]

Well, Officer Friendly.

I'm in the middle of a movie.
What do you want?

We need you at the station.

What can I say?
When I'm good, I'm great.

And when you're bad,
you're better?

You tell me.

Bad is definitely better.

Don't you remember the first
rule of being an Articulette?

You don't flirt
with your sister's man.

Do I have any say in this?

BOTH:
No.

Thanks, Andre.

You're a good friend.

Teddy boo.

What took you so long?
