seem tough...

[softly] Okay, okay.

Turn off the f*cking car.

[engine stops]

Bag's in the back.

Bag's in the back.

Bag's in the back.

Okay.

Birthday.

Right. Birthday.

[exhales deeply]

Okay.

-Hey, how's it going?

-Hey.

I'm Zak.

-We went to Punahou together.

-Oh. Hey.

-Good to see you.

-Yeah, you too.

-Galen.

-Galen.

-Great to see you again, man.

-Yeah. Thanks.

Once you get settled,

if you want to give us

a hand with the imu.

Yeah, for sure.

Of course.

Hey, Ryan.

It's Nick.

Remember me?

I grew up next door.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Of course.

-Good to see you.

-You too.

Can I help you

with your stuff?

No, no, it's okay.

I got it.

-All right.

-Yeah.

-Oh, look who it is.

-Hi.

-The birthday girl.

-You made it.

It's me, Meg...

birthday girl.

-[both laugh]

-Come here.

It's so good to see you.

[Ryan] You too.

Come on.

Oh, haupia cake.

-No coconut flakes.

-Oh, my God.

You're too good to me.

-You need help with anything?

-No, it's okay. I have it.

Okay. Does it feel familiar

at all?

Yeah?

No?

How was the drive?

Oh, sorry

it took me a while.

-I'm just starting again.

-No, it's okay.

Okay, I think John is outside.

I'm gonna put this down.

I'll meet you out there.

-Okay?

-Okay.

[laughter]

[girl] Two...

three...

four...

-[girl 1] Five...

-[girl 2] Five...

-[girl 1] Six...

-[girl 2] Six...

Hey, it's Makena,

your cousin.

Hey.

We used to bodysurf together.

-Makena?

-Yeah.

-Makena.

-You got it.

I think

I remember that name.

Put your stuff down.

John's around here somewhere.

-Okay.

-Hey.

-Hi.

-I'm Leia.

Hi.

Hey, Ry.

[laughs] Oh, God.

How's it going?

It's all right.

It's really good to see you.

Yeah, it's good

to see you, too.

Ryan.

Uncle Pat's here, too.

Do you remember him?

Uncle Pat.

Pat!

Look who's here.

Hey.

How's it, brah?

About time.

We've been waiting

for you all morning.

-[Ryan] Sorry.

-All right.

I guess we'll meet him

again later.

[man] I told you

three days ago, okay?

Yeah.

Yeah, we got to get

the toilet fixed today.

No, man, they're all here

right now.

Okay, well, what time?

Just get here.

-Hey.

-Hey.

That's our brother John.

Hey, we talked about this.

Are you not gonna

introduce yourself?

He knows who I am.

You know who I am, right?

-How could I forget?

-There, see?

I'll take this

to the little cabin.

-"Little cabin"?

-You okay?

We just thought, 'cause it's,

like, away from everyone,

it's a little quieter

over there.

-Yeah, thanks.

-Hey. You okay?

Yeah.

I'm great.

[Meg] Okay.

[distant chatter]

Card on the fridge,

eye level.

I won't forget it--

Eye level.

Yeah, just give me a sec.

-[sighs] Glasses.

-Hey.

-I need--

-You good?

Yeah.

The boys are prepping

the imu pit,

and then we're gonna do

the blessing for Dad.

So you just have to relax

in the meantime.

Yeah, sure.

-Do you need something?

-No, I'm okay. I--

Okolehao.

Hawaiian moonshine.

They made it right here

on the property.

[Zak] Hey, Meg, are there

some tables in the back?

Yeah, yeah, in the compound.

Hey, are you sure

you're good with all this?

Yeah. I'm okay.

Okay, 'cause you can just

let me know if you, like...

No. Mom and Dad

should be here, you know?

-[object clatters]

-Oh, no, sh*t.

-I'm so sorry.

-[Meg] Hey, guys. Come on.

You know

that can't happen, right?

Dad's gone. You remember?

Yeah. He's-- He's dead.

-Mm-hmm.

-Where's Mom?

Um, Mom is in California

with Aunt Kathy.

She had to get

out of the house for a while.

-Right. I knew that.

-Yeah? Mm-hmm.

-Hey.

-I'm having--

I know it's really hard

to remember all this stuff.

You are doing

a great job, okay?

It's so good to have you here.

Look at me.

You're doing so good.

It's been forever.

And you just let me know

when you need help, okay?

I'm right here.

Oh.

I'm right here.

-Thank you.

-Mm-hmm.

[John] Guys, where are

the paper towels at?

Oh, Meg, I didn't know

your family makes it here.

-Oh, yeah.

-Careful with that.

My dad learned

from my grandpa,

and he learned

from his dad, but...

Glasses.

My dad was the first person

to actually bottle it.

It's been in our family for...

Where are

the f*cking glasses?

I need just one.

[tense music]

Nice, brah.

Okay, drag 'em.

[knife whirring]

Oh, brah.

sh*t. Sorry.

Jesus.

I'm sorry.

-Good?

-Yeah, here.

Sorry.

Sorry.

It's okay.

Jesus Christ.

Ryan, why don't you

just sit over there?

-I got it. Okay.

-Just-- Ryan.

-Oh, sh*t.

-f*cking kidding me?

No, it's okay.

I got it, I got it.

-You okay?

-I got it.

He's just trying to help.

-Okay. You good?

-Yeah.

Go over there.

-[Ryan] I'm good. I can help.

-Go over there.

[Ryan] It won't happen again.

I--

Ryan, why don't

you go inside?

Get some water, okay?

[tense music]

[grunting]

[grunts rapidly]

[music intensifies]

-[grunts]

-[music stops]

[grunts softly]

[breathing heavily]

["Volver"

by Carlos Gardel playing]

[singing in Spanish]

[indistinct chatter]

["Volver" continues]

[indistinct chatter]

[indistinct chatter]

["Volver" continues]

["Volver" continues]

[Nick] Wish me luck.

Give me a countdown.

[all]

Three, two, one.

-[cheering]

-["Volver" fades]

Holy sh*t.

[laughs]

-Alice.

-Oh.

There you go, my dear.

-Thank you.

-Happy birthday.

-Well done.

-[laughter]

-You know what they say.

-What do they say, Nick?

-[laughter]

-Oh, there we go.

-There he goes.

-[all] Cheers.

-Happy birthday, Meg.

-Thank you.

[Nick] Wow.

Never seen that before.

Hi.

You look familiar.

Do I know you?

Hello.

Do I know you?

You look familiar.

Go on.

Go on.

Oh, there you are.

[laughs]

Go on.

You want to stay with me?

You want to talk to me?

Nobody else will.

You can be my buddy.

You and me.

You want to be my friend?

[girl] Hi.

You want to play scoop ball?

-[Ryan] Scoop ball?

-[girl] Yeah.

-Oh, my God, kids.

-[laughs]

Ugh. I want kids.

[laughs]

You do this

to make the ball go.

-[Ryan] Uh-huh.

-And you try to...

-Like that.

-[Ryan] Oh, you--

And then you try to catch it

with the scoop.

[Ryan] Okay. You're gonna

you're gonna flick it to me.

-So I flick it to you?

-Yep.

Okay.

Oh, you're really good.

All right.

-Thanks.

-Let's go.

Ooh.

[Leia] Looks like

he's doing better.

I'm pretty impressed.

I saw him a couple months ago.

-And...

-Yeah?

Um...

I don't-- I don't--

-I haven't seen him

in a bit, but...

-Yeah.

I don't know. I mean...

-Can I tell you something?

-Yeah.

Ooh.

-Close.

-Close.

When he got here, I was just

like, "Do I introduce myself?"

And then-- And then I saw

you guys, like, introducing

-like, reintroducing

yourselves again.

-Yeah.

So I was like, "Oh, okay,

that's where we are."

-Yeah.

-So...

I don't know.

I just, like, didn't--

I don't know.

What's that?

-This?

-Yeah.

Um, it's a scar.

Is that why

your brain's funny?

Mostly, yeah.

Okay, you ready?

I guess I'm just trying

to navigate, like--

I mean, honestly, so far,

you're doing a good job.

Like, I don't think

he remembers me, but...

Yeah.

It's nice to see him.

-And, like--

-Yeah.

-Oh, no. Yeah, it is.

-Yeah.

It's just so sad.

I mean...

It's sad.

It is sad.

I just think keeping things,

like, relatively normal

and positive and, like--

'Cause it's her birthday

-and he's here.

-Yeah.

-Oh, yes!

-[girl] Good job.

Thank you.

Thanks for, uh, teaching me.

-Yeah.

-This is fun.

[shouting and laughter]

Get it. Let's go.

Nice!

Go, go, go, go!

Right here. Yeah.

Set, go.

-Oh!

-Whoo!

Go, go!

-[grunts]

-Oh!

[shouting and laughter]

-Bro, you're bleeding.

-Score.

All right, boys.

What's the score?

-There we go. There we go.

-Here, here, here.

Give me.

-Ooh.

-Ooh.

[laughs]

-Whoo.

-[laughter]

-There we go. There we go.

-We got it.

-Go, go, go.

-Whoa, whoa.

Oh, no, that was in.

It was-- yeah.

-Out. That was out.

-Nice.

-That was out.

-Awesome, you guys.

-Nice work.

-Hey, man.

Can you take my place?

-Um, sure.

-Thanks.

[tense music]

[indistinct chatter]

Nice one.

Let's go.

Hey, Nick, let's have Ryan

go right there.

-Yeah, yeah.

-Okay.

We have a score?

-Hey, what's the score?

-All right.

-9 serving 4.

-Yeah, right there.

You're good.

Okay.

-Let's go.

-Oh!

-Oh.

-Oh.

Watch, watch, watch, watch.

-Oh.

-There we go.

Sorry.

-Okay, man?

-Yeah.

Here, I'll take it.

-Their point or--

-Yeah.

-It's our point.

-Wait, was it ours or yours?

-Wait.

-Is it ours or yours?

Your guys' serve.

Trying to steal the point.

Service. Here we go.

Oh, oh.

Ryan.

-Nice. Four hits. Let's go.

-Oh.

Yeah, let's play it.

There it is. There it is.

-Get it, Ryan.

-Go, go, go, go.

9, boys.

Let's go.

I got to...

I'm gonna head back

and do the pit.

-Okay.

-[Nick] Hey, Ryan.

Your serve.

Okay, guys, let's rotate.

Ryan, just-- you can hit it

underhand if you want.

Play, play, play.

Jump. Jump, jump, jump.

Up, up, up.

-Jump. Go.

-[yelling and cheering]

-Hey.

-Good one, man.

-Thanks.

-Good job, man.

Great work.

[indistinct chatter]

Hey, you just started.

I'll take it.

And one, two, three, and go.

All right, let's go, Abby.

Let's go, Abby.

Annie, catching up on her.

Here we go. Here we go.

Abby's off to a quick start.

There you go.

You're almost there.

And there it is.

Abby, you just got her,

just by one, just by a hair.

Why did you

start doing tarot?

Um...

I...

Why did I get into tarot?

I just was--

I was really into magic

when I was a child, basically.

Do you believe in it?

I do.

I think

it's about interpretation.

And I think it gives you

a mirror into yourself.

Do you want a reading?

[dramatic music]

Sure.

Do you want to tell me

what your question is?

Do you want to know?

I mean, I'm curious, but...

[Ryan] Um...

I just--

I want to know...

When it's gonna get easier?

All right.

-[both] Jan ken po.

-Yes, okay...

-[both] Jan ken po.

-Yes!

Oh, baby.

Had a little bit of beer.

Oh, a little roll action.

So you think

of the follow-through.

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Okay.

-Nice.

-Holy sh*t.

[Fabrizio] Let's see

what the cards say.

[chuckles]

So your future...

has to do with steadfast,

quick movement

towards something specific.

What a rogue

and peasant sl*ve am I.

Whoa.

-That was Hamlet.

-What?

You just remembered

a line from Hamlet.

-[chuckles] I did?

-Yeah.

You played Hamlet at UH

over ten years ago.

Do you remember?

No.

No, those words were just...

they were just there.

That was, like,

a four-hour play.

And you had

every line memorized.

-Really?

-Yeah.

And after everything

that you've been through,

after everything,

there comes the line.

That's...

The therapy must be working.

I hope so.

You're still going, right?

Yeah, every week.

There's just, you know,

so much I can't remember.

It's really frustrating.

[clears throat]

[Pat] Ryan. Fabrizio.

Hello, Uncle Pat.

-How you doing?

-Doing good.

-Seriously?

-What?

[chuckles]

When are you gonna let me

give you a reading?

Wait, wait, wait.

All those years of college...

like, weren't you

at, like, a PhD level?

And now you're a card reading,

fortunetelling,

guru kind of guy?

[John] Let's go, let's go.

Neck and neck here,

neck and neck.

Annie's getting close.

And there it is!

Come on, you got it.

Come on.

Nice.

Good job.

-[cries]

-Are you okay?

Hey, come here.

Come here. Are you okay?

Come on, let's go.

Ready? Come on.

Come on.

We're good.

You did good, though.

You did good, though, huh?

Yeah?

You did good, right?

You want to do another one

or no?

-No.

-No more? What happened?

It was just too much?

Yeah?

It was just too much?

All the way to the end-- Did I

push you a little too hard?

Okay.

-Okay, you ready?

-Mm-hmm.

Was-- Was I good?

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

You were-- You were great.

I mean, you were funny.

You were outgoing.

You were weird.

You definitely raised

a little bit of hell.

-I meant at acting.

-Oh. [laughs]

Yeah. Yes. Yes.

You were a terrific actor.

Terrific.

I mean, you had

a full-ride scholarship at UH.

You played

in all of their shows.

They sold out the theater

twice when you played Hamlet.

-That's pretty cool.

-Yeah.

-What's the story?

-Oof, that's a big one.

Um, okay, so, uh,

you play, um, a prince

who's avenging

his father's death...

[Ryan] Uh-huh.

Because your father

came back as a ghost

to tell you

that your uncle k*lled him.

So you have an evil uncle.

You have a girl that you're

in love with who dies.

You k*ll her father

by accident.

I think your uncle dies.

I think maybe your mother

dies, or maybe she doesn't.

I don't really remember.

If you think

I'm playing well now,

you should see me after

a little bit of a okolehao.

[gasps] One.

-That's when I play my best.

-Ooh.

[bag thuds]

-Nice.

-Nice, Meg.

Remember last year

he invited those Hinge girls

and then, like,

completely ignored them?

Yeah. And then...

And we had

to hang out with them?

And entertain

them the whole time.

-Yes, oh, okay.

-Yes, my point exactly.

King of cornhole?

-Queen of cornhole.

-Oh, my God.

-Whatever. Whatever.

-Thank you, everybody.

-Good game.

-Whatever. That was luck.

I'll be here all night,

with you.

-Yeah, whatever.

-Good game.

-Good game. Good game.

-Whoop!

-Oh, my God.

-[both] Ooh!

-Good sportsmanship.

-Sorry.

We try. We try.

Hey, we know

who the real winners are.

I'm good. I'm good.

I am.

It's...

It's good that he's here,

and I talked with him before,

so he's gonna keep it

under control.

It's not gonna be old Ryan.

-Okay.

-I'm happy.

I'm happy he's here. Yeah.

You know, I have--

I have flashes of it.

I just can't grab on.

I don't remember the accident.

I mean, I try.

I try, and I try.

It's just not there.

-Will you grab me a beer?

-[Fabrizio] Yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

-Thanks.

-Can you mix with your meds?

Yeah, yeah, it's--it's fine.

I just have to take it light.

Here, I got it.

I got it, I got it, I got it.

Let me help you.

Oh, let's see if I got

something-- right here.

I can remember

a line from Hamlet,

but I can't open a beer.

You'll get there.

Five years.

Five years later,

and I'm walking again...

Finally back here.

It's good to have you back.

[dreamy music]

[muffled speech]

[muffled laughter]

[John] I feel like it's

always f*cking something.

[Meg] Yeah, it wasn't working

last night either.

Like, since I've been here,

it hasn't been working.

And wasn't it doing this

last year, too?

[object scraping]

We should just get

a new one.

[John sighs]

Jesus, Dad really let

this place fall apart, huh?

Yeah, well, Dad let

a lot of things fall apart.

If Ryan lived here,

he could help you out

with this kind of stuff.

-Meg, stop.

-What?

-Please. Not again.

-It'll be nicer.

Don't be such an as*h*le

all the time.

I know. I'm the as*h*le.

I'm always the as*h*le, right?

He has to feel welcome here.

Meg, he's doing fine, okay?

Move.

[Meg] I think he just wants

to remember something

from that night.

Well, he's lucky

he never does.

John.

John.

It wasn't your fault.

[John] I know.

[John sighs]

[Meg sighs]

[tense music]

[Ryan] Talk to John about job.

Talk to John about job.

[muttering]

Talk to John about job.

[muttering indistinctly]

Talk to John about job.

...John about a job.

Yeah.

Oh.

Anyway, so I got

a first, uh, fish story.

I take Nick out,

take the kayak out.

-Oh, God, here we go.

-We go out to this island.

And there's kind of a mix of,

like, pelagic fish, reef fish,

everything here, so I know

he's gonna catch something.

And we go jigging

on the spinning reels.

He drops down the lure,

starts giving it some action.

Then, like, five seconds,

the thing hits.

It's-- [imitates reel whirring]

The reel starts going.

And then, um, he starts

reeling it up.

He's all excited.

He gets it, like, 30 feet from

the boat, and I can see it.

It's a beautiful...

with all the kind of silver

and the blues.

And then right then,

shark comes under, hits it.

And it...

reel starts going again.

He looks at me.

He's not knowing what to do.

And maybe two minutes later,

he's fighting the thing,

-and then the whole line broke.

-[laughter]

And that was the first fish

he never caught.

[laughter]

-[Pat] Oh, bummers.

-Yeah.

Yeah.

Bet you and Dad

have some good ones, huh?

We had some good ones,

yeah, a few.

Yeah, um...

Did he ever tell you

about the nose ring guy?

No.

So a friend of mine,

he was visiting from

another country, actually.

And he wanted to go fishing.

He'd never been...

-[whispers] John.

-Never even been on a boat.

I didn't know that

till we was ten miles out.

So we take him out

at daybreak.

We're going out

to the LL buoy.

What's up?

You remember Pat, right?

-[Pat] Hey. Hi, you.

-He's talking.

All right, so we're about

by the rubbish pile.

And we get double--

double strike.

And your dad is going crazy

reeling it in.

And my friend is trying

to figure it out.

And I just said,

"Just-- Just reel it.

It's not hard. You can do it."

So your dad pulls the mahi--

mahi-mahi, pulls it on board,

and those fish like...

-Just come find me.

-...to flop around a lot.

So he spit the hook.

The hook goes flying.

I didn't see that part 'cause

I was focused on the front,

but I hear my friend

kind of yelp, like, "Help."

So I look back at him.

And he has this hook

in his nose

like, the middle part of

the nose, all the way through.

And he was kind of, like a,

you know, deer in a headlight.

So your dad looked at me.

And we smiled and said, eh--

[man] ...I'd take it out...

[waves crashing]

[light music]

[indistinct chatter, laughter]

-Oh, that's terrifying.

-Yeah. Yeah.

[chatter, laughter continue]

I had a coffee, and I was,

like, doing fine, whatever.

And on my walk back,

I had, like, two more...

[waves crashing]

-And I just started sweating.

-[Leia] Ooh.

[Meg] Ryan!

Ryan!

Ryan!

-[inaudible]

-[waves crashing]

You know you can't do that.

Wait. You don't have to leave.

Ryan.

[tense music]

[John] Ryan.

Hey.

Ryan.

Ryan.

Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

It's me.

Food's ready.

Just get cleaned up.

Wait, please.

Can we talk, please?

Sure.

Yeah, sure. What's up?

How are you?

Good. Busy.

Busy with what?

Work, life, you know?

I don't know.

I tried calling.

I thought you'd come by.

We talked, remember?

-Are you mad at me?

-No.

-Are you sure?

-Yeah.

I can help you

manage this place.

It's okay.

No, I'm stronger now.

I can't stay with Mom

in town anymore.

Please let me help here.

Ryan, just get

cleaned up, man.

Food's ready. Come on.

Dad would love it.

You know that.

He always wanted us to.

Ryan, you can, um, barely

take care of yourself, man.

How are you gonna

help me here?

Just get cleaned up.

[door opens, closes]

[Leia, Makena] One-night stand

I want to be more

than a friend

To you, to you

Okay, wait. Does this

red lip look ridiculous?

-[Leia] No. You look fantastic.

-I'm like, is it too much?

[Leia] Wait, wait.

Okay, so what is the vibe?

I don't know where I put it,

but Zak gave me, um...

[gasps]

-Gave me a little something

for tonight.

-Little something?

I'll find it.

Do you have it in here?

We can take it now.

I mean, I didn't--

Take it later.

-Yeah.

-[whispers] Or now?

-[laughs]

-Let's take it now.

Okay, okay.

That was the right answer.

I feel like we've had

enough, you know...

-Of course.

-Yeah.

-Okay.

-Cheers.

-Cheers.

-Have fun.

[laughs]

Ah. Whoo!

[laughter]

[laughter]

[tense music]

[indistinct chatter]

Just open it up. Check--

Just check right there.

[Meg] This is veg.

-This is the veggie?

-[Meg] Yeah.

-Okay, perfect.

-Middle one is veggie.

[clears throat]

Careful.

[indistinct chatter]

-Veggie.

-Whoa, absolutely.

-Yeah, good idea.

-Nice.

-You got a little--

-Please.

-Who wants the ear?

-Who wants the ear?

Oh. Oh!

-Yeah.

-Don't f*ck with me.

Meg, it's your birthday.

Go for it.

-Birthday ear.

-Oh.

Yeah.

Good for your skin.

It's good for your--

-It's good for your--

-[laughs]

Hey, who's gonna kiss

the pig?

-Who's gonna kiss the pig?

-Louder. Louder.

Who's gonna kiss

the pig?

-Come on.

-Who's gonna

kiss the pig?

Actually--

[Makena]

Just give it a little kiss.

-There's also the brain.

-The brain.

-The brain.

-[Makena] Oh, sh*t.

-Exactly.

-Oh, the grand finale...

[Meg] Hey, guys, um...

thank you so much

for being here.

Like, seriously,

it means so much to me.

Um...

it's been a really hard year,

but you guys all really

helped me get through it.

My whole family-- you all really

helped us get through it.

Um, so I'm really grateful

to you all forever.

Um...

[Ryan giggling]

[Meg] It's really weird

that he's not here.

[Ryan giggling]

[Meg] It's okay.

-It's just part of the injury.

-[Ryan laughing]

[Pat] Before I say the prayer,

I just want to say...

-[snorts]

-It's been about nine months

since we had the celebration

of life for Uncle Jim.

[Ryan giggles]

[Pat] So I want to ask you guys

to hold hands...

close your eyes,

and think of...

Uncle Jim.

I just want

a moment of silence, of...

[Ryan continues laughing]

...remembering what

Uncle Jim did for you,

what he-- what he meant to you,

if he said something special,

just-- just a moment.

[Ryan cackling]

[speaking Hawaiian]

[in English] We come together

in prayer to praise your name

and to say mahalo nui lao

for all that you mean

in our lives.

[Ryan laughing]

[Pat speaking Hawaiian]

[Ryan laughing]

[Pat, in English]

Thank you for this time

as ohana to celebrate...

[speaking Hawaiian]

[in English]

...Meg's special day.

You know, you and your dad

and I was very close.

Every time I see you,

I see his light, his love,

and his spirit

shine through you.

He's always with you.

[Ryan laughing]

[John] Told you

this was a bad idea.

[Meg]

Can you just leave me alone?

[Pat] It's okay, John.

Calm down.

[crying softly]

[muffled]

Ryan, please, not right now.

Please, just leave me alone.

[Fabrizio] I got it.

Thank you.

-[Nick] There you go, sir.

-Love stretching like this.

-This feels great.

-[laughter]

[indistinct chatter]

-[Meg] What do you want?

-[indistinct chatter]

-Yeah.

-[Fabrizio] So...

[Meg] Honestly, so good.

Here.

It's a little...

Good.

You're not necessarily

a fan of poi.

No, I don't love poi,

but the potatoes are good.

-You love potato.

-I love potato.

-Anyone else want poi?

-Wow.

-[laughs]

-That's hot.

-[indistinct chatter, laughter]

-Is it hot?

All right,

how much poi you want?

-[laughter]

-Here we go.

[indistinct chatter]

-So, um...

-Yeah.

-You want poi?

-Please, go on.

Please, tell me

more about your life.

What don't I know

about you, Makena?

-[Makena] Okay.

-Share it all with me at once.

-Could you guys pass

the salad down here?

-Yeah.

[Fabrizio] What's your deepest,

darkest secret?

-[Makena] Oh, my.

-What do you want?

Here you go.

[Makena] I've been thinking

a lot about...

You guys want any?

-I got it already.

-Feeling hungry.

-No, I'm good.

-I'm good.

Pat, you want some?

-Moving here.

-Mm.

[Nick] That's a big secret.

[Leia] Secret?

-[Nick] No, no.

-[Leia] No secret.

[laughter]

-Makena's gonna move.

-Oh.

-Yeah.

-[Leia] What?

[Makena] Potentially.

Potentially.

-Really?

-[Makena] Potentially.

When?

[Makena] I'm working

on splitting my time.

[indistinct chatter]

-[Galen] I don't know

if I agree.

-[laughter]

How you and me ended up

in the doghouse?

-[Makena] Yeah.

-[laughter]

So then we both went

into the doghouse

and started barking at people.

[laughter]

Bring anyone over tonight

this year?

-I invited someone.

-Mm!

But she hasn't confirmed yet.

-It's like a tradition.

-So--

-[laughter]

-At this point.

-[laughter]

-[Pat] I'm gonna talk to Ryan.

You never got sick.

[Galen] Remember what you said

at the library?

[Makena] What did I say

at the library?

[indistinct chatter, laughter]

[Pat groans]

Is everyone mad at me?

[Pat groans]

They just miss him.

Healing takes time.

I don't remember

what happened.

I just know that he's gone.

It's okay.

He got really sick

for a while,

but he passed peacefully.

Was I there?

Just your mom.

It's what he wanted.

Hey.

You came a long way.

I'm proud of you.

I'm trying.

I know.

But it's not just about you.

Meg and John are healing too,

right?

You have to remember that.

[animals chattering]

[Nick] All right, everybody!

We're gonna do

a sake b*mb dedicated to Meg.

-[all cheering]

-Happy birthday, Meg.

-[Galen] Yes!

-You all know what to do.

This is tradition.

So repeat after me.

-Banzai!

-[all] Banzai!

-Banzai!

-[all] Banzai!

-Banzai!

-[all] Banzai!

[laughter]

[all cheering]

-[Nick] Happy birthday, Meg!

-[laughter]

[speaking indistinctly]

[indistinct chatter]

[Nick] All right, guys.

There's one last shot

of okolehao.

Who's gonna take it?

-Galen?

-[Galen] I got my glass.

Come on, bro... Or Zak.

You want it, Zak?

-No, give it--

-[all cheering]

[Nick] Happy birthday, Meg.

Oh, my God.

[cheering continues]

I got to catch up

with Meg now, jeez.

-Anyone else want more?

-[Galen] Wow.

-Get to work, guys. Come on.

-Oh.

-Yeah, we're all behind you.

-[laughter]

[indistinct chatter]

-Oh, my God.

-John! John!

-One second.

-Come on.

[Nick] All right, John's

not gonna do it.

-Oh, well.

-Hey.

Yeah.

[upbeat music playing]

[cheering and chatter]

[music stops]

[distorted eerie music]

["Volver" by Carlos Gardel

playing distorted]

[engine turns over]

[John] Ryan, wait up.

-I'm coming with you.

-[chuckles]

All right.

Come on. You can make it.

-Go, go, go!

-No, no, no!

-[horn blares]

-[tires squeal, crashing]

[breathing deeply]

[soft dramatic music]

[John breathing heavily]

[sweeping music]

When the world was young

When all time began

Then a song was born

In the heart of man

Long ago

It was so

Loud and clear

Listen on

Maybe you'll recognize

Many dreams you left

In paradise

Long ago

They were so

Very near

When your heart is filled

With this haunting melody

Then remember these dreams

will live eternally

You've a right to dream

And to make them all

come true

They were born to be

a part of you

For this melody

never disappears

It was handed down

through the passing years

Long ago

It was so

Loud

And clear

Long ago

It was so

Loud and clear

-[objects clattering]

-[Meg] Oh, my God.

Okay. All right.

-All right.

-[Galen] All right.

[Ryan] Oh.

Time to call it

a night, yeah?

Hey.

I love you.

-I love you.

-I love you, too, okay?

Come on.

-Come on.

-Okay.

Yep. I'm gonna...

[speaking indistinctly]

No, Ryan.

We're going inside.

-We're going to bed, yeah?

-No, no, no.

I-- I'm good. I'm good.

-Lie down.

-[Ryan sighs]

-[Meg] Lie down. Down.

-[Ryan] Down.

-[Meg] All the way.

-[Ryan] Down.

-[Meg] Good night.

-[Ryan] Good night.

[dreamy music]

[exhales sharply]

[laughter]

I took, like, a little bit.

I took, like, half a point.

Um, so...

cruising pretty hard.

He'll understand.

I mean, I told him...

[laughter]

[Nick] And we caught these,

like, two super-trippy,

tiny little sharks with,

like, these green eyes.

[Galen] Can you take off

that dress for me, dear?

[laughter]

You're so stupid.

Sure, maybe later.

[upbeat music playing]

[man] I don't like this one.

[indistinct chatter]

[laughter]

-[Makena] Right now, guys?

-[laughs]

[indistinct chatter]

Hey, you need to leave,

okay?

-This is my family.

-All right.

These are my friends.

I can be here.

-Ryan, come on, let's go.

-Why?

Because you're embarrassing

yourself and everybody else.

-Come on.

-No, please.

[Meg] Okay, can you please stay

in your room this time?

-[Ryan] Yes.

-[Meg] And go to sleep.

[Ryan] I'm sorry.

[Meg] It's--

I just need you to...

Jeez.

Sit down.

[Ryan sighs] Okay.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry I'm a bad brother.

We love you.

We all love you, okay?

No, I'm a burden.

I'm a burden.

No, you're not.

Can you stop that?

You know it's true.

If you want to live

on your own,

you have to be responsible.

-I'm trying.

-Okay.

II know you're trying, but

it's been, like, five years

of Mom and I worrying about

you and taking care of you

and making sure

you don't get hurt.

I'll do better.

-I know I will.

-I know you will, too, okay?

Go to sleep.

[softly]

It was John's fault.

What?

[voice breaking]

It was John's fault.

Ryan, the car

clipped you guys,

and you weren't wearing

a helmet.

-He reached--

-That's what--

He reached over.

He grabbed my hand.

-What are you talking about?

-He grabbed--

[softly] He grabbed my hand.

He did.

Just go to sleep.

Okay?

Can you promise me that?

Okay.

Night's over.

See you tomorrow.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, Meg.

I'm so sorry.

I'm sorry.

[soft tense music]

[soft tense music]

Birthday cake.

Card on the fridge.

Don't forget.

Don't forget. Don't forget.

Birthday cake.

Cake.

Where's the cake?

Cake. Cake, cake, cake, cake.

Cake, cake, cake.

Cake!

Cake. Okay, okay.

Happy birthday, Meg.

[tense music]

[lighter clicking]

[lighter thuds]

[exhaling sharply, groans]

[soft tense music]

[tense music stops]

From me

No, no

-No worries

-I'm Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky

Just can't

Just can't bring me down

No

Can't bring me down

Can't bring me down

Even when

the times seem good

I know that things

will get better, better

Even when the seas

seem so low

I know the docks,

they're gonna settle, settle

Every night when I go

Another one

So I can go, I can go

I'm gonna keep hoping

I'm Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky

He's so happy

Ain't got no worries

from me

-No worries

-No, no

I'm Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky...

[Ryan] Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday to you

Hey, everybody.

Hello? Hello?

We need to sing

"Happy Birthday."

Happy birthday to you

[music stops]

-Happy birthday to you

-Ryan, please stop.

-It's a birthday party.

-Please stop.

It's a-- It's her birthday.

It's your birthday.

Yes, it is.

And I love the cake.

Will you get him

out of here?

Thank you so much. Where is

he supposed to go, John?

-I don't give a f*ck.

Just get him out of my face.

-[Meg] Where?

You did this to me.

-Ryan.

-No, you-- you grabbed my hand.

-He-- He said this...

-[John] What are you

talking about?

...like an hour ago.

[Meg] What are you

talking about, Ryan?

You grabbed my hand.

You grabbed my hand,

and you did this.

You did this.

You made it go faster.

-[John] You're f*cking drunk.

-I tried to stop.

-You're f*cking drunk.

-No, I wanted to stop!

-He's drunk.

-[Ryan] I wanted to stop.

Please, please

get him out of here.

You're f*cking wasted.

How many drinks

have you had right now?

How many f*cking drinks

have you had right now?

-[Ryan] You remember!

-You need to get out.

-John... Remembers what?

-No, you wanted

to beat the light.

-Get the f*ck out.

-You tried to beat the light.

[John] Do not f*cking

do this right now, Ryan.

[Meg] Wait.

What is he talking about?

Did you do something?

[John] No, I didn't

f*cking do anything!

No, you wouldn't listen.

-[crying] You ruined me.

-[Meg] You did this?

-[John] I did not do anything.

-[Meg] John!

What the f*ck are you

talking about, Ryan?

[Ryan crying]

f*ck you. No.

-f*ck you.

-I'll never forgive you

for this.

[Meg] John, what is

he talking about?

[all shouting]

-Guys, guys.

-Are you f*cking kidding me?

-You ruined my life!

-Hey, hey.

-[John] I did this?

-No, you did this!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

[John] He was already f*cked up!

Your life was already

f*cking ruined,

you f*cking piece of sh*t!

[Meg] What the f*ck

are you talking about, John?

Your life was already

f*cking ruined!

-[Meg] Stop!

-f*ck you!

John. John.

Cool...

-John.

-Get off. Get off. Get off.

[distorted dreamy music]

What happened

to your shoulder?

[somber music]

[John] Un-f*cking-believable.

He doesn't remember anything.

[Meg] Yeah, probably

'cause you tackled him

to the f*cking ground.

[John]

He blames me for everything

and then just dips back off

into la la land.

[Meg] Yeah, well, did you do it?

Did you do

what he said you did?

You can't even answer me?

[Meg crying]

You're lucky Dad's not here.

[somber music]

[Hawaiian folk music]

[Hawaiian folk music continues]

There's a little

brown road

Winding over the hill

To a little white cot

By the sea

There's a little green gate

At whose trellis I wait

While two eyes of blue

Come smiling through

At me

At me

There's a gray lock or two

In the brown of her hair

There's some silver

in mine, too

I see

But in all the long years

When the clouds brought

their tears

Those two eyes of blue

Kept smiling through

At me

At me

And if ever I'm left

In this world

All alone

I shall wait for my call

Patiently

For if heaven

Be kind

I shall wake there

To find

Those two

Eyes of blue

Still smiling

Through

At me

At me
