03x05 - The Surprise

Post by bunniefuu »

[dramatic music]

- Mommy! - Brian.

- Oh, baby. - Mother.

Oh, Olivia.

I can't just go back home.

I-I have children, I have to raise them.

I'm certainly not gonna let you take 'em.

We wanna go home with you.

[crying]

Don't worry.

I'm gonna take you home with me.

Abby..

But everything turned out for the best.

What do you mean everything worked out for the best?

We think we're remarrying.

[theme music]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]

Abby!

Abby, open up, it's Val! Abby.

Val, for heaven's sake, I'm right here.

Abby, look, look, I got a postcard from Olivia.

- See? - Oh.

It is.

[both laughing]

See.

[indistinct]

"Daddy says, daddy says.." I could k*ll him.

It's frustrating. There's no street address.

Well, I guess they were moving into an apartment or something.

Well, at least you know the city it was mailed from.

If I were you, I'd put that detective

of yours on the first plane out.

- He's already on one. - Good.

Now, what I need to know is if and when he finds

Jeff and the kids, what do I do?

I don't know, I have a feeling this is one of those states

that won't honor your custody decree.

Won't honor it?

What do you mean..

[sighs] Well..

There, there must be some kind of legal thing

you can do to make them honor it.

Yeah, I can, I can move there

and, uh, lobby for a new custody law.

This is not funny, Richard. I'm trying to find my children.

Is that the best advice you can give me?

Look, I-I-I hate to tell you, but I have

other things to do.

[sighs] Thank you very much.

[sighs]

Abby..

- Look, you want my advice? - Yes.

When you find Jeff, talk it over with him

see if he'll meet you halfway.

I'd rather run him down on a crosswalk.

[female #1 over PA] 'Customer on line two.'

[indistinct announcements]

No sale, huh?

Sell some, you blow some.

Why, what went wrong?

I don't know, maybe he didn't like my face.

I'm not being critical, I really would like to know.

Okay, he was interested in a cheaper model.

I tried to move him up

'but I guess I tried to take too big a bite.'

You always try to move 'em up?

Why are you so interested in selling all of a sudden?

That's what this business is all about, isn't it? Selling cars.

'I ought to understand the basic rules at least'

if you don't mind teaching them to me.

Well, there are no rules.

I mean, uh, every car, every customer

is a different ball game.

There's no way to teach selling.

How did you learn?

By selling.

[machine whirring]

[female #1 over PA] 'Showroom. Line three.'

Oh, Mr. Parkhurst.

Am I, uh, interrupting something?

Oh, no. Nothing that can't wait.

I saw a very good-looking woman leaving here a few minutes ago.

You did?

Oh, uh, uh, Abby. Uh, Mrs. Cunningham.

Listen, I'm in a kind of a bind

uh, you know Harvey Franklin of ZTone?

'Well, he's coming to town and, uh'

expects to be entertained in the manner

to which he is accustomed. So, well..

Andrew..

Mr. Parkhurst, uh, your wife is out front waiting for you.

You're taking her to lunch, remember?

Yes, yes. Thank you, uh, Miss Dodds.

How would you like to, uh, score

some points around here, Richard?

Take over for me on this, uh, Harvey Franklin thing.

See to it that he, uh, has himself

a real good time tomorrow night.

Now, you do follow me, Richard?

Uh, first cabin, money no object.

- Uh, Mr. Parkhurst? - Yes, yes.

I know, my wife.

[door closes]

What's he talking about? Uh, dinner, I mean, a show?

Are you kidding? Harvey Franklin wants action.

Action.

Oh, you mean like a-a-a basketball game

or hockey tickets?

[scoffs] Forget games.

Try professions.

- Old ones. - Oh.

Oh, look. Come on, he's got to be kidding.

I don't know anybody like that.

I don't know any girls like that.

Well, he is depending on you.

Good luck.

[instrumental music]

Four hearts.

I pass.

Pass.

- Pass? - 'That's game, isn't it?'

How can you leave me in hearts, you're open with two spades?

Oh, well, that was a psychological bid.

I don't believe this.

Well, you make psychological bids all the time.

Your bet.

Sorry, pal, I'm not gonna save you.

El paso.

[baby crying]

Ooh, saved by the baby.

I'll get it.

Good luck, pal.

Did you ever see such an eager father?

Before you start making psychological bids, you ought

to learn how to play the basics.

Hey, little sweetheart.

Yeah. Come on.

Up you go. Up you go.

[baby cooing]

Hey, little darlin'.

Oh, yeah.

Are you hungry, hun? Getting hungry?

[baby crying]

Ooh, what a nice smile.

- Now there's a pretty lady. - Oh, baby.

Aren't you gonna thank Richard for that nice compliment?

[chuckling]

She's great, isn't she?

Listen, uh, I need a favor.

Are we dispensing favors today?

Yes, we are.

I've, uh, I got to entertain a client

who's coming in from out of town

tomorrow night, highly VIP.

- Yeah. Hey, just a sec. - Mm.

Hey, Ginger, your baby's ready for her dinner.

[baby continues crying]

So, what do you need, some concert tickets or something?

Uh, no. Uh...entertainment.

Oh. Oh, yeah. Okay, listen..

Here's mommy. Here she is.

- She's really hungry. - I got her.

Okay. Bye.

So, what kind of girl are you looking for?

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, it's not for me, it's for a client.

No, Kenny, I mean it.

The guy's a vice president of a big company

whose account we handle.

- Sure. - Give me a break, will you?

Hey, Richard, I don't even wanna know, alright?

I got a friend, he's a bass player. He's well-connected.

I'll get you some numbers through him.

Friend, huh? Mm-hm.

Yeah, a friend.

[laughs]

[instrumental music]

[car door closes]

[car engine turns over]

Where are you off to?

[sighs] To get my kids.

You mean you found them? Oh, Abby.

That's wonderful. I can't believe it.

The detective called just a half an hour ago

and he said he'd located Jeff

moving into an apartment with 'em.

Oh, will you give him my love

and hugs and good luck and everything?

[Abby] 'I will.'

You mean that Paul's gonna give 'em back without a fuss?

[chuckles]

He doesn't even know I've found them yet.

[dramatic music]

[Val] 'Abby..'

You be careful.

Don't worry about me. Worry about him.

[off-note flute music]

- Hi. - Hi, daddy.

- Hi. - Sorry, I'm late.

I got, uh, hung up in traffic.

- How you doing, champ? - Okay.

Good.

- Hello, sweetheart. - Hi, daddy.

- How you doing? - Fine.

Hey, you, you, you, let's go

a little easier on the horn, huh? Where's Dorothy?

She didn't come today. Her car broke down.

How'd you get home from school?

Brian's teacher drove us.

My teacher? I thought he was yours.

W-wait a minute.

You got into a car with a stranger?

We were waiting there all alone.

Everyone else had gone home.

'He knew our names.'

Oh, Dorothy sent him?

I don't know, but don't worry

he wasn't a pervert or anything.

We'll talk about this after dinner.

I knew he'd be mad.

[doorbell buzzing]

[Jeff] 'Somebody get that.'

[doorbell buzzing]

- Mommy! - Brian.

- Oh, baby. - Mother!

[gasps] Oh, Olivia!

Oh, baby. Oh.

[instrumental music]

Oh, God, I missed you.

Oh.

[chuckles]

Look at you two.

How'd you find us?

A detective..

...who's waiting outside if I need any help.

Olivia, put a low fire under the broccoli

and make a salad.

Brian, help your sister.

Kids, please. I wanna talk to your mother.

No. You'll send her away.

Olivia, I said go.

We wanna talk to her, too.

When I'm finished. Now, come on. Please.

[Abby sighs]

I heard about Sid. I'm sorry.

I appreciate you saying so.

It must have been awful for you.

Yes, it was.

And you didn't make things any easier by throwing me

'into a panic over the kids.'

[inhales] What panic?

I left you that tape. You knew they were with me.

Terrific.

I didn't know where, I didn't know how

I didn't know anything, I didn't even know..

...if they were alive.

Well, believe me, they've been just fine.

Like, uh, like this afternoon when they, uh

they were stranded at school. That was...just fine?

How'd you know about that?

The man who picked them up was my detective.

And it's a lucky thing he was watching them.

It was unavoidable, the woman who picks them up

after school had car trouble.

[scoffs] You're incredible.

Don't you realize what you're doing to them?

It's better than leaving them with an immoral

self-indulgent mother.

[sighs]

- What are you doing? - I'm calling the police.

You've violated my custody decree.

Forget it.

I've done my homework, baby.

The courts in this town don't let

California tell them what to do.

Then, the FBI will. The children are in danger.

I've done my homework too, baby.

Give me the phone.

- Jeff. - Give me the phone!

[dramatic music]

[lamp shatters]

Give me the phone.

You're not calling anyone from here.

Oh! Damn you!

- Stop it! Stop it! - 'Oh, babies.'

Oh. I'm sorry.

- We're sorry. - Sorry, Olivia.

Nothing's gonna happen.

You okay?

Are you?

[sighs]

Olivia, we said it was over.

- But I don't want her to go. - I won't, baby.

I'll, I'll stay and help you with dinner, okay?

Okay?

Please, daddy. Please.

We haven't had a chance to talk to her.

And you promised.

Yeah, you promised.

Alright.

'She can stay for dinner.'

[chuckles]

[clattering]

Then we go to math and after to English.

You're a lot more help than Brian.

[Abby chuckles]

I've had a lot more practice.

- Here. - Thanks, honey.

So, uh, what do you do for fun?

We go hiking on Saturday.

And daddy takes us to a movie on Sunday.

Are you making any friends?

Sure.

And Brian?

He has a couple.

So, all in all, then things a-are pretty good here, huh?

Sure.

[instrumental music]

[voice breaks] Oh, mommy.

Oh, baby.

[sobbing]

We wanna go home with you.

Oh, don't worry.

I'm gonna take you home with me.

Daddy won't let you.

He has everything figured out.

No, no.

No, not everything.

I have a few things figured out myself.

I do, you'll see.

Well, kitchen's all cleaned up, spick and span.

Well. Thanks, Olivia, hold the noise down

in the bathroom, alright, Brian's asleep.

- Do I have to go to bed now? - It's almost 10 o'clock.

We wanna get an early start in the morning.

It's okay, sweetie, you go to bed.

- I love you. - I love you, too.

[Olivia] 'I love you three.'

[Abby] 'I love you four.'

- I love you five! - I love you six.

[giggling] I love you seven!

Aright. Enough.

Olivia, go to bed.

[sighs]

- I love you. - I love you, baby.

You sleep tight now, huh?

Okay. Goodnight, mom.

Goodnight baby.

- Goodnight, dad. - Goodnight, sweetheart.

[room door closes]

Thank you for dinner, and the visit.

That's it?

No scene, no maneuvers, no angry accusations?

I think we've had quite enough of that for one night.

Certainly more than was good for the children.

Well, for once, we agree.

[sighs]

But that's it, I don't want you to come back.

[sighs] How can you say that?

Don't you see how much they love me?

It's only because you indulge them.

[sighs] Oh.

Abby, I've been working patiently with 'em through

a very difficult adjustment living here with me.

Which I've said on many an occasion

is what I consider to be in their best interest.

I did not come here for just one visit, Jeff.

Look, that's not my problem.

I didn't want you here in the first place.

You're, uh, going hiking tomorrow, aren't you?

I'm going hiking with you.

Look, what do you want?

Do you want me to pack them up and move away from here?

Is that what you want?

If you do that, I'll be right on your heels

with my detectives.

Is that what you want?

[pouring]

[pot clanks]

[exhales] You almost through, mama?

[Lilimae] 'Shh, honey, I got spoon bread in the oven'

'and you know how temperamental that is.'

[sighs]

It's awfully late to be cooking, isn't it?

Besides, you're keeping Gary from his work.

Oh, that's alright, I'm finished.

[sighs] So, um, how's it going?

- Okay. - Want some juice?

No, thanks.

Except for this idea of Karen's.

Mmm, more commercials?

[Gary laughs] No. She, uh..

Well, I was talking to her the other day about selling cars

'and I said the only way to learn it was to do it.'

So, now, that's what she wants to do.

I declare, a woman selling cars?

Well, what's wrong with that?

- Oh. - 'Everything.'

[Gary] 'She's not the type.'

She'll make a lot of wrong moves, lose good customers.

Gary's right. What's a woman know about machines?

Oh, mama, things are different now.

I mean, women are into all kinds of different

occupations nowadays.

- More's the pity. - Oh.

Well, I'll just bet that Karen turns out to be

real good at selling.

- Yeah? How much? - Yeah.

I'll go the whole hog and I'll bet a dollar.

[Gary laughs]

- You got yourself a bet. - Alright.

But I'm afraid you're gonna lose, sugar.

Oh.

This is crazy.

[Abby] Ooh, look at these.

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.

Look at these flowers. Smell this. Smell it.

- Isn't it beautiful? - Oh, yeah.

Here. Pluck it. You can put it in your hair.

- Yeah. - Okay?

Mhm.

The, uh, the guidebook says that this trail

was first blazed by Cherokee hunting parties

and later used by Josiah Foxfield to reach

the lookout post at the summit.

[birds chirping]

I hope you're being here doesn't confuse the children.

They're fine.

And I have to admit, you're..

You're doing a terrific job with 'em

under very difficult circumstances.

Well, nothing worthwhile is easy.

That's the story of our relationship, isn't it?

There's nothing worthwhile about our relationship.

[Abby] 'There has been.'

'We've shared a lot of happiness, Jeff.'

That...freezing weekend at the Kirklands

where we huddled in front of the fireplace

the whole time and...fell in love.

I fell in love on the Girards' boat.

You did?

[Abby laughs]

I never knew that.

Well, now you know.

It doesn't really matter.

Do you remember that surprise birthday party

you gave me at the club? I loved you so for that.

And we brought those two kids into the world, Jeff

that at least is worth something.

Yeah, very.

There's nothing worthwhile now.

Maybe there could be.

[instrumental music]

I don't think so.

Well...there's a good buy.

This one has stick shift, four-speed radials all around.

A one-owner car clean as a whistle.

- Uh, we think not. Thank you. - Oh, well. Thank you.

Come back soon.

[female #1 over PA] 'Dawn, pick up on line three.'

'Joe, line four, please.'

- Hiya, Gary. - Heya.

Uh, he wants a sedan with automatic and air.

She wants a sports car with, uh, a stick shift.

- Uh-huh. - Stereo, sheepskin seats.

Yeah.

Well, nobody said it was easy.

Don't count me out yet.

[indistinct shouting]

Jeff?

[sighs] Jeff?

We've gotta talk, try and work something out.

I can't just go back home.

I-I-I have children, I have to, I have to raise them.

I'm certainly not gonna let you take them.

Then, I'll move here.

You can't do that. Your whole life's back there.

My life is where my children are.

Jeff..

Look, I was a rotten wife.

I'll-I'll admit that, but I'm...I'm a good mother.

I love my children, they love me.

I can't, I can't be without them. I just..

...I can't.

Would you really move here?

If that's what it takes.

Well, I can't stop you, but I don't want you to.

Jeff, you never change.

Staunch to the very end.

I'm only trying to do what's right.

I know.

[inhales] Alright, you win.

Oh?

Mm-hm.

'Come on.'

It's a lovely day, let's lighten up

and try and enjoy it.

You never change either, do you?

I know exactly what you're up to.

- Oh, you do? - Yeah.

Except, I'm, uh, no longer such an easy mark.

[chuckles]

You wanna make a bet?

[instrumental music]

Hey, kids, look what I got. Come on, get it!

'Don't let daddy get it!'

Hey, give me that shoe!

[indistinct shouting]

[Olivia shrieks]

Mom!

Don't let dad get it!

Don't let dad.. Give it to me!

Oh, no. Whoo!

Oh, no!

[Abby groans]

[laughter]

That'll teach you.

Oh, yeah. Sure.

Here it is. You want it?

Come on. Come and get it.

[laughter]

I'll get you for this, you monsters!

What're you laughing at?

Here it is. You still want it?

Oh, honey.

[Richard] 'Cheers.'

[telephone ringing]

So, uh, Myra, tell me, um, when you're not working, like, um

What, w-what, what do you do?

I'm Jean.

Jean.

- Myra. - Myra.

- Myra. - Jean.

Harvey.

Excuse me.

Mr. Franklin?

- Hi, I'm Richard Avery. - Hi, there.

Uh, Mr. Parkhurst suggested I drop by with some friends.

Yes. He, uh, mentioned it to me.

Well, they're right over there.

'The taller one's Myra, and the other one's Jean.'

Maybe you'd like to have a drink with one of them

or, uh, both of them.

[Richard] 'Uh, Myra would do just fine.'

- Myra, this is Harvey. - Nice to meet you.

Care for a drink or something?

Whatever.

Whatever?

[fire crackling]

Oh, hi. I thought you'd gone to bed.

[chuckles] No, I'm not sleepy yet.

I was just going to see about my clothes.

[Jeff] 'I already put them in the dryer.'

Oh, thanks.

Kids asleep yet?

Long ago.

[Jeff] 'Well, they were pretty tired.'

[sighs] Exhausted.

I'll, uh, I'll just put my stuff

back on when it gets dry.

[laughs] They'll need ironing.

[sighs] Never one of my strong points.

[chuckles]

No, never.

Well, you don't have to stand up to wait.

[chuckles]

I bet I look like Debbie Reynolds in this.

[laughs]

No. You look just fine.

She always did, didn't she?

Mm-mm.

- You know, the kids had-- - The kids--

[chuckling]

The kids had a nice day.

They had a great day.

I did too.

[fire crackling]

[instrumental music]

Jeff.

It's alright.

Jeff.

It's alright.

It's alright.

Are you sure?

Oh, yes.

Yes, Abby.

Oh, Abby!

[music continues]

Abby.

[female #1 over PA] 'Showroom. Line two.'

Mr. Dorado.

Thank you very much for your help.

Well, thank you.

Have you decided which one you wanted?

Well, I'd like to think it over.

- Ah. Sure. - Okay?

- But I'll be back. - Oh, good.

Whatever you say.

Not another one.

That's his car.

He's, um, thinking it over.

- Right. - Oh, he'll be back.

- He said so. - And you believed it?

Well, he wouldn't have taken so much of my time

if he wasn't gonna buy something, right?

Uh, you're the boss.

[knock on door]

Ah, Mr. Parkhurst.

- Am I interrupting anything? - Not at all.

All I wanted to say, Richard, was...right on.

Right on.

Oh, you read my recommendation on the Glickman case?

The, uh, what case?

Uh, t-t-the lawsuit.

I sent you a recommendation, week before last?

Oh, that. Uh, well, no, no, I haven't

had a chance to look at that yet.

No, uh, what I came here for was, uh

that young lady that you obtained

for, uh, Harvey Franklin.

Oh.

Richard..

'What can I say?'

I mean, she..

...she was right on target.

You do have an eye.

[tapping]

- Ciao. - Ciao.

[door closes]

- Hi. - Hi.

- Hello! - Hi, Aunt Karen!

- Hi! - We made it.

- All in three days. - Oh!

Three days and three hours.

Well, give me a kiss. Oh!

- Oh, it's so good to see you. - It's good to see you.

Mom, look who's here.

Oh, you got the kids back.

Thank God.

Isn't it wonderful?

Oh, it's fabulous. Welcome home.

[Abby] 'They've been so good, I can't tell you.'

'Working like little beavers.'

'Little beavers.'

That's why they're good to have around.

Hi, Karen.

What are you doing here?

I persuaded Jeff to come back with us.

We're trying to work things out.

Work things out?

Kids. Uh, take that stuff inside now. Okay?

- Okay. - Thanks.

See you later, Aunt Karen.

- Bye, honey. - Bye, mom.

- Bye, Aunt Karen. - Bye.

I haven't had a chance to tell you

how sorry I was about Sid.

Thank you.

I'm sorry, I, I seem so confused

but I...I don't understand.

'How can you work things out with a man'

'who ran off with your kids?'

Well, it's not...not as simple as that, Karen.

He wasn't the only one that was at fault.

I see.

Don't let her throw you. She'll come around.

[exhales]

- Uh-uh. - Hmm?

- Hey. You have to go. - Hmm?

Why?

We don't wanna confuse the children.

Mm.

Or the neighbors.

[Jeff laughs]

I think the neighbors are already pretty confused.

[laughs]

[Abby] That's my favorite part of this whole thing.

One of my favorite parts.

Too bad I can't just move back in.

You could if you wanted to.

I could?

If you wanted to.

Well, I do want to, only, uh..

I know.

The kids.

Yeah, it would be unfair to let them

get used to having us together again

only to be let down if things didn't work out.

I know anyway, I want you...to be sure this time.

You want me to be sure?

I know you don't trust me, Jeff, and I don't blame you.

Hold it, hold it, hold it, Abby.

What are you saying?

Jeff, these last few days..

[instrumental music]

Traveling together, being a family again, it..

...has been so wonderful.

'I feel like a...a new person.'

You know when you... when you took

the kids, as angry as I was..

[Abby sighs]

I figured, "He loves them more than I thought and..

"Maybe some of the things he's, he's been saying

about me are right."

Oh, Abby.

Then, when Sid died..

...I started thinking about how fragile everything is.

And how few chances we're given to..

...make a good life.

And I've, I've wasted so many of mine.

[music continues]

How sure are you about us now?

I'm sure.

Then let's get married again.

[chuckling]

So, what do you want me to do?

I don't know exactly yet.

- Good morning, Abby. - Hi, Laura.

It's good to hear the kids are back safe and sound.

- Thank you. - Bu-bye, sweetie.

- I'll see you later. - Yeah.

[doorbell rings]

[sighs]

- Hi, Laura. - Good morning, Val.

Here's that book. You are going to love it.

Ooh. Thank you.

I'm sure I will.

Good morning, Lilimae, how are you this morning?

Fat, sassy and curious.

What's Abby talking to your husband about?

Legal matters I hope.

Abby isn't gonna file charges against Jeff now, is she?

[Lilimae] How could she be?

I saw them unloading bags from the van yesterday.

Looked like they'd been on the road together for months.

'They all went out to dinner'

and he' stayed until 2:30 in the morning.

Maybe he and Abby were playing cribbage, but I doubt it.

[Val sighs] Mama.

Oh, what's the sense of living in a cul-de-sac, honey

if you can't snoop?

Well, ladies, I've gotta get to work.

I'll see you both later.

[Val] 'Thanks, Laura.'

[female #1 over PA] 'Mrs. Fairgate, customer in the showroom.'

You're no customer.

Karen, I wanna talk to you.

[telephone ringing]

[door closes]

Talk.

Oh, come on, Karen, we used to be good friends.

Right, we used to be. Now, what do you want?

I want to explain to you why I did what I did.

I heard the explanation you left on the tape recording.

'I didn't buy it then, I'm not buying it now.'

Abby's no saint, but for you to run off with those children--

- 'Look, I thought you, of--' - Hey, wait a minute.

Why did you come here?

To get my approval? You're never gonna get it.

[female #1 over PA] 'Gary Ewing. Line three.'

I was wrong, okay? I admit it.

But everything turned out for the best--

What do you mean everything worked out for the best?

It did. It's just what Abby needed.

'It brought her to her senses.'

Really?

Yes. And I don't want you to hold it against me now.

Why now?

Oh, come on, Jeff, I know you're dying to tell me something

and I don't have the time to pry it out of you.

We're thinking of remarrying.

You're thinking of it, what does Abby have to say?

She's thinking about it, too.

I'll bet.

Look, I gotta get back to work.

Let me know when you set a date.

Friday at 1:00.

What?

Friday at 1:00 at the courthouse.

Now, she'll k*ll me if she knows I told you.

She wants to make it a surprise for the kids.

We need your friendship, Karen, it's important to us.

I know it's hard to believe, but Abby's changed.

Believe me, she's a totally different person.

Yeah?

You better check her fingerprints.

[instrumental music]

- Thanks a lot, Karen. - Uh-huh.

Mrs. Fairgate.

Mr. Dorado, how nice to see you.

Thank you. I've done my thinking.

Here's my offer.

[female #1 over PA] 'Showroom. Line two.'

'Showroom. Line two.'

Well, uh, won't you step this way?

Mr. Dorado is offering a $600 for number 10

$1200 for number 16A, $900 for number 27

and $2000 for the four-door with air.

You wanna buy four cars?

$4700 for the lot.

Take it or leave it.

[female #1 over PA] 'Service, line one.'

[laughs]

Mrs. Fairgate, you got yourself a deal.

Oh, Mr. Dorado, thank you.

Um, this is Mr. Ewing.

He's gonna help us write out the order, won't you, Mr. Ewing?

Uh, yeah. I'd be happy to.

Uh, pardon me for asking, but why do you need four big cars?

I grow wheat.

Oh.

South of the border.

Uh-huh.

Dwarf wheat.

Ah, you're gonna haul wheat in them.

[laughs] Not haul, use.

I take the wheat to make alcohol

'combine it with gasoline.'

- And get gasohol. - Exactly.

[Karen] 'Oh, I'm sorry.'

These cars aren't equipped to burn gasohol.

[laughing]

Well, they will when I get through with them.

Oh, a-a-and then what?

Then, I'll sell them.

I'll sell Gasohol, I'll fight the oil crisis

'and make a profit while I'm at it.'

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Yeah, but, Gary, we only bet a dollar

why are you paying me so much?

Because you were so right and I was so wrong.

Turns out Mr. Dorado chopped all over town

for gas guzzlers he could pick up cheaply.

Uh-huh. Karen gave him the best deal, huh?

Well, no, not exactly.

Uh, he said he could have

uh, saved a few dollars elsewhere, but, uh..

He thought Karen was a very fine lady

'and he wanted to do business with her.'

But, mama, I thought you said that women

shouldn't have anything to do with selling cars.

Well, maybe I did..

...but there's one thing women have every right to do..

...and that's change their minds.

[both laugh]

Come on, sweet pea, supper's getting cold.

Are they asleep?

- Do they suspect anything? - No.

You're so beautiful.

[exhales]

Don't forget to tell their teacher that

you're keeping them out of school all day.

I won't.

I still don't see how you're gonna get them dressed up

without arousing the suspicions.

[chuckles]

I told them that we're having our pictures taken.

[Abby chuckles]

I knew something was going on

but, I mean, I just can't believe this.

Well, he came into my office

and accidentally on purpose, let it slip.

Oh, I told you they weren't playing cribbage.

Well, when's it supposed to take place?

Today, at 1:00.

Oh, I'd give my eye-teeth to be there.

But we haven't been invited.

Let's just show up anyhow.

[chuckles]

I'd just love to throw rice at 'em.

Yeah, I'd like to throw something at them, too.

But we weren't invited, so, can't go, right?

Right.

Yes. Right.

[instrumental music]

Karen.

I thought you weren't coming.

Well, I-I just couldn't stay away.

[Lilimae] 'Neither could I.'

And neither could you.

Oh, well, in spite of everything, here I am.

Are they here yet?

[Val] 'Yeah. Jeff and his mom are waiting inside.'

No, Abby.

Late as usual.

[crackling]

[birds chirping]

[sighs]

Oh. Hi, Jeff.

- Annette. - What are you doing here?

Uh, we came to congratulate you.

Yeah, afterwards.

[chuckles] That's very thoughtful.

Terrific.

Where's Abby?

W-we don't know.

- Yes? - Mr. Cunningham.

Yeah.

What's this?

A court order restraining you

from visiting your children.

[dramatic music]

Hey, are you crazy? We're remarrying.

You better read that.

If you try to visit your children

your ex-wife is gonna press charges

against you for child stealing.

Jeff, what does it say?

What he says it says.

You mean Abby's not coming?

[Olivia] 'Hi, Aunt Karen!'

Hi!

[instrumental music]

We're going skating.

So I see.

Hi.

Have a good time, kids.

- 'Bye.' - 'Bye.'

We were at the courthouse today.

Yes. Val, Lilimae, and I.

Were you surprised?

I wasn't completely.

You really hit him with a whole enchilada, didn't you?

'You made it hurt.'

He hurt me.

Nobody gets away with that.
