01x17 - Marmot on Ice

Post by bunniefuu »

The cooler

- The heat is unbearable!

I feel like
like a brioche in the oven.

Come on, Lupin, get up!

Time for breakfast.

Get up, Lupin!

Ouch, it's hot!

Ouch!

My paw pads are burning up.

-A wolf!

What is that thing?

No ?!

It's ice and my tongue is stuck!

Leave me alone!

[Ah, yes!]

That's the stuff!

Oh, yeah!

It's all melted!

-Let's close
the cooler's door!

Follow me to the stables.

The horse can drink in the stables.
-I wouldn't mind, it's hot.

It's freezing in here!

Who's that?

Hello.

-Oh, it's unbreathable!

-What heat, it's unbearable!

-Your royal water, Your Majesty!
-Thank you, Bontemps.

Has the ice arrived?

-Yes, I've received it, Your Majesty.

-Very good, and keep me informed
of the progress of our project!

Here, drink up!

Sometimes I envy you that you
don't have to be wigged.

-Belfort?

Belfort?

-No!

Stop it Belfort.
We don't want to seem neglected.

The king's dog must always be perfect.

-Ah, Bazire, you are
an excellent dog handler!

Thanks to you,
my four legged friends are resplendent.

Especially Belfort...

-To pamper Your Majesty's dogs is an honor
and furthermore a great responsibility.

-See to it that he's
perfectly groomed tomorrow!

Because the King is preparing a surprise for you...
-A surprise?

-That's intriguing...
Perhaps it's a buffet?

-[Belfort?]
There has been one yesterday, and it's not a surprise.

And there was also a banquet two days ago.

-Is it an exotic animal? We
already have plenty of those.

Well... Belfort?

Hello, my dear Lupin!
-Hey, how's it going?

I've got something cool to show you.
-Now? I'd love to, but...

I have to stay close to my
master. I can't just slip away.

-I'm going to make you disappear! You have to see it.
-Oh, all right, I'll follow you...

It's delightfully cool
in here, my dear Lupin.

What a superb discovery!

-Yes, it's delirious! But
I have much better...

-Check this out!

-Oh?
-Have you ever seen anything like that?

Looks like a little
beaver or a big rabbit.

What's the name of it?

-A groundhog.

-Yes, why not. I was thinking of
something like "beabbit".

But groundhog sounds good.

-I've already seen some in
the books in the castle library.

Groundhogs live in the mountains. Far from here.
-How far is that from here?

-Oh? Days on horseback, even weeks...

-Oh yeah, that's really far!

-Come on, come on, don't cry!

What's your name?

-Jo... an...
-Jo... Jo

Jojo, like the anime character?!
Note: I had fun here.

-No!

Joran!

-Pleased to meet you Joran, my name's
Belfort, and this is my friend Lupin...

What are you doing in Versailles?

-I don't know, I woke up, and
poof, the mountains are gone!

I shouldn't have went to play on the
glacier, Mom and Dad told me that.

I didn't listen and now,
I've lost them forever!

-You must have been caught
in the ice delivered here.

Don't you worry!

We'll help you get back
to the mountains.

-Really?

-Yeah, we are.
[How do we do that?]

-[No idea.]

-Let's think!

Maybe if I sniff out the groundhog,
I could maybe find the way back.

-No need, my dear Lupin!

Joran never touched the
ground. She arrived in a cart.

-Yeah!
She'll have to leave in a cart.

The coachman has just
watered his horse at the stables.

-So, to the stables we go!
-Belfort?

Damn, Bazire!

Belfort, we're late for the bath.

-Schedules must be
respected, etiquette and protocol!

This is Versailles!

Belfort!

-Poor Bazire!

-[Statue!]
-Dammit, Belfort!

-Dog that stinks.

I'll give him a give a roasting!
Note: In French, there's a double meaning "reprimand" and "clean".

-Belfort! Come here!

It is time for your bath!

-Let's go!

-Belfort?!

Belfort?

Come back here!

-Everything all right, Joran?

-Oh, poor Bazire!

Quick, Joran, hang on!

In total,

my dear Joran, Versailles is home to

Of course, it's colossal!

-Hi, Ernest!

How's it going, buddy?

-Hi, Lupin!
-Have you seen the coachman's wagon

who delivered the ice this morning?
-He just left through the porch, over there.

Over there.
-Thank you Ernest.

-Admire the military horses and
parade horses of Louis, my master!

-Shorten the guided tour, the coachman
has just left! Follow me.

-Hang on!

-What's going on here?

-What a traffic jam.
Which cart is the right one?

-I'm never gonna find
my mom and dad.

-You'll see them again,
you got my word!

-Out of the way!

-Here's milk, here's hay,
there's cheese... I love cheese!

-I love cheese.

Are you sure about that?

-Scrolls.

Fabrics.

Perfumes.

Wood, wool, flour, coffee.

-Lupin?!
-Reckless driver!

Groundhog!

I've got it! Groundhog!

Follow me!

Watch out!

-Joran, are you all right?
-Belfort!

-Joran, behind you!

Now, that's not good...

-Hang on, Lupin!

-I'm not built for the city.

-Ready to jump, Joran?

-All right.

Don't be afraid! I'll be right here.

-Lupin?!

Did you see, it rocks, doesn't it?
-You could have really hurt yourself!

-The cart?!

I almost had it!

It's too far now,
only a galloping horse could catch it.

-ERNEST!

-Ernest, can you take Joran back to the
cart that smells like groundhogs?

Can you? Huh? Huh?

-Only you are the fastest.

-Affirmative.
-Negative!

Ernest has to stay here.

Orders are orders!
-But...

-Horses in the royal stables
only go out on the King's orders.

If one of us disobeys,
we'll be kicked out!

-Ah, Bucéphale is right...
I'm sorry, folks.

-You can stay here as long
as you wish, my little Joran.

-If your beloved
master hadn't brought in

ice in the summer, we
wouldn't be in this mess!

-All because of the ice...
-Oh, the ice.

Yes, that's the solution.
We need to melt the ice.

-So that my master orders more?

-Joran will leave discreetly
with the messenger.

-And I'll go home!
-Yes! No. No way!

Getting this ice from so far
away must have been long and difficult.

To melt it
would be disrespectful.

This ice is important to my
master. I can't do that to him!

Since you insist...

This building was designed
to keep the cold in.

For all this ice to melt,
the sun has to get inside.

We need to...

-Make a hole to the roof!

Awesome!

-Digging is great fun,
isn't it?

-Yes, it is!

-Can I ask what you're doing?

-Hello Ariane.

To help this little one get back home,
we need to dig a hole in this dome,

to melt the ice stored in it.

-Sorry to slow you down but

it's impossible,
this cooler is indestructible.

-The cat's talking nonsense and
I'll prove it to you.

-Ouch!

-OK, it's stone...
The cat is right, it's indestructible.

-Was Ariane right?
How odd...

It's my master, the king's architect,
who built this dome.

Even with an iron
will, you'll get nowhere.

-Ariane, if your master
designed this cooler,

you should be able to help us.

Joran must return to her people.
-Please, Madame Ariane...

-To my knowledge, it's
impossible, I'm sorry, Joran...

-No, nothing's impossible!

Let's see...
And what if get some heat into it!

For example...

Fire?
-No, that's too dangerous.

What about our body heat?
Mine melted an ice cube this morning.

-Alas, there's too much ice in there...

-Belfort is right,
only a big animal could do it!

-What's that?

-The solution to our problem.

-Oh no, not her!

-Disgusting, I tell you!

Nothing like the peanuts
I was served in Portugal.

-Horrible, not the equivalent!
-Sure, it's filthy!

-Disgusting!
-Well said!

-Greetings, Madam Rosa!
-Belfort, what brings you here?

-A young groundhog must
return home to the mountains...

Would you be willing to come...
How to put it... I don't want to bother you...

I'm embarrassed to ask...
-Spit it out, buddy!

Could you incubate some ice?

What are you asking?!

-You'd have to put your butt
on big ice cubes,

to make them melt.
Like a hen brooding an egg...

Me?!

Who do you think I am?
-No, but really...

-There's no respect left!

-I would never have been asked that
when I was in Portugal!

-[Leave it to me!]

Madame Rosa, you're quite right.
Incubating ice... What an idea!

But you see,

you're the only animal
in the kingdom with such

strength, such grace...
and such kindness!

-Ah, that's true!

-Helping others comes naturally,

when... how to put it...
when you have a big heart like yours.

-That's right, I have a huge heart!
-Huge, yes!

-As big as a house!

-Like a castle even!
-That's the spirit!

We'll be back tonight, I'm afraid you're
a little too conspicuous in broad daylight.

See you tonight, madame Rosa,
and thank you.

-Absolutely, see you tonight!

When you are as generous as I am,

it's my duty to help animals in need.

Lost...

Belfort is lost!

The favorite dog of
His Majesty the King...

It was my duty,
my responsibility!

Now, for sure,
I'll end up in the galleys.

Wake up! Get up!

Wake up!
Come on!

Mmm... Peanuts...

-[Oh? She's sleepwalking.]

-[But that wasn't part of the plan.]

-Peanuts...

-This is absolutely unbearable!
-She has to be exiled.

-Yes, she doesn't know how to hold herself.

-[Oh, dear!]

[She'll wake up
the whole of Versailles.]

[Are you thinking what I'm thinking?]

-Peanuts are good.

-It works.

Almost there.

-Ah, bummer!

We're out of peanuts!

-Peanuts!

-[Where's she going?!]

-We've got to stop her before
she's crushes all the groves.

No, no, no, no!

Get back!

-No, no, no, not that way!

-Peanuts!

-I found a peanut.

-You're amazing!

-Here you go!

-It's working!

To the cooler!
-Let's get going!

-Peanuts!

-Damn, that sounded too easy!

-A paw?

-Yeah!

-Thank you Ariane for
solving the problem again.

You're welcome, of course, it's

my duty as brains of the group.

Oh? Firefly!

-We've lost the brains of the group.

-All we can do now is wait for the ice to

melt and my master to send a new messenger.

You'll be going home soon.

-Thank you.

-Peanuts!

You should go home, Belfort.

Your family's gonna wake up, right?

-I'll never get tired of this view.

-I admit, it's not bad, yes.

Wake up, little Joran!
It's time for breakfast.

-Get ready for the departure!

There's nothing left, Your
Majesty! All melted, but...

-That's a shame.

Send a messenger right away,
to ask for another load of ice!

-Joran, it worked, my master's
sending a messenger to the mountains.

-I'm going home!
-To the stables, hurry up!

-Belfort? Come back here!

-Hurry up, guys!
Hurry!

-Joran, climb into the saddlebag!

-[Oh? The messenger!]

[Ah!]

No, Ernest, rest! This time,
I'm leaving with Bucéphale.

-We bet on the wrong horse?!

-[We've got to change horses fast.]
-Come on, get out of the way, Belfort!

-Belfort?!

-Belfort!

Leave that big mule alone!
-A mule?! Easy, Bucéphale!

-Help!

-Take that!

My poor Bazire...

-Goodbye, Belfort and Lupin!

Thanks a lot.

Come and see me in the mountains!

-Goodbye, come back anytime!
-Bye, Joran.

-See you soon!

-I've got a speck of dust in my eye.

-Belfort?!

I think I'm the one
who needs a bath.

-Your king promised you
a great surprise.

Here it is!

Sorbets...

You've never tasted
such delicious dishes.

Fresh, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth,
delicate, there's something for everyone!

-That's why Louis, my master,
needed all that ice.

Mixed with fruit, it
makes delicious sorbets.

-Raspberry, I love it!

Lemon, I don't love that at all...

-That's why we make such a good team,
my dear Lupin.

I prefer lemon.
Tasteful!

-In Louis XIV's time, the refrigerator
and the freezer had not yet been invented.

To enjoy sorbets in summer,

we had other solutions.

For example, Ice carts
were brought in from the mountains.

Or in winter, when the fountains and
the "Grand Canal" were frozen over,

workers broke up the ice and
placed it in small houses.

They called them coolers.

Inside these coolers was a well
that was ten meters deep.

The ice is protected from the sun and heat.

This was the forerunner
of the refrigerator.

Thanks to this ice,
which was mixed with fruits,

sorbets could be enjoyed all year round.
Even in summer.

Some of the thirteen coolers
built by the Sun King

are still visible in
the park at Versailles.
