06x17 - Lead Me to the Altar

Post by bunniefuu »

Mack just got warrants

to investigate Galveston Industries.

-He did? -Yeah.

Greg Sumner came through for him.

I just got everything taken care of for the wedding.

[Parker] Tomorrow afternoon.

Didn't Galveston say to you

that he would k*ll Mack if he got too close?

Mack's a big boy. He can take care of himself.

If any man can show just cause

why they may not lawfully be joined together,

let him speak now or forever hold his peace.

[theme music playing]

[country music playing]

Things are not good down here, Abby.

It's going to take longer than I expected.

She doesn't know who I am.

She doesn't even know who she is.

Well, maybe you should think about coming home without her.

No.

Well, you've got to get some help.

You may be doing her more harm than good.

It sounds like a problem for professionals to me.

Look, I'm closer to her than anybody.

Before I do anything else,

I've got to establish some link to the past for her.

Maybe then I can bring her home.

Maybe she doesn't want to come home.

[phone rings]

I've got to gain her trust and her confidence.

Look, Gary, if you haven't been able to do that so far,

what makes you think you're going to do it now?

Abby, I'm going to have to win her all over again.

Oh, well, that's just fine.

I'm sorry. Just until I can get her back home.

Well, I'm, I'm sure you'll do whatever you think is best.

Um, everyone here sends their love to you and Val,

ah, especially me. Hurry home.

Yeah, I will.

So, where were we?

-That was Gary? -Yeah.

-How is Valene? -Oh, just fine.

What's taking so long?

Well, apparently Val doesn't want to come back.

Maybe I should go down there.

Maybe we should both go down there.

Uh, no, um, um...

Gary's making some progress with her.

Some progress? I'm going down there.

No!

What do you mean, no? Why shouldn't I go, Abby?

Well, first of all, you're needed here,

and, and second of all,

Gary is making some progress with her.

He told me he's going to be back in a day or two,

and he's bringing Valene with him,

so everything is going to be just fine.

[soft music playing]

[Verna] There you go, ma'am. More for you.

How about you, Elmo? You want some more?

Just a splash, huh?

You're okay, aren't you? Okay.

Okay, now what are you two grinning about?

-Oh, nothing. -Parker, come on.

I was just telling Ron about her honeymoon plans.

-Anything I don't know about? -[bell rings]

Oh, I doubt it. [laughs]

Oh, would you stop? What's the matter with you two.

-What is going on? -[Parker laughs].

Here you go, sir, your beef for you.

All right.

Well, I just got everything taken care of for the wedding.

-And? -Tomorrow afternoon.

-Oh! -You all ready?

You do work fast.

And I got Reverend McCauley to cancel his other plans,

-so he could officiate. -Oh, I don't believe you.

You are a wonder worker.

-And... -What?

...got the marriage license all filled out.

Phew.

Too late to back out now.

Oh, come on. Who's going to back out?

You got it in fast forward.

Oh, Parker.

It's going to be such a good life.

I just know it is.

Oh!

[music continues]

[d*ck] I'd really like to be more helpful.

But after a certain amount of time, faces tend to fade.

[music fades]

After all, Miss Maxwell was only a secretary.

Lila, Maxwell was your secretary.

That's true.

But it's not as if she were one of the company officers.

Someone I'd be more apt to recall after all this time.

What were her duties?

-Ah, what does any secretary do? -Tell us.

She, uh, answered phones, typed letters.

Ah, took dictation, made coffee.

Yes, exactly. She was a secretary.

In her capacity as your secretary,

did Lila Maxwell have any access

to confidential company information?

Well, uh, let me try and...

MacKenzie, what is this?

Well, I'm just trying to find out what I can

about Lila Maxwell's death.

Then why didn't you come to me directly?

Well, you just don't go to the head of a conglomerate

to find out information on a secretary.

I'm talking about the warrants.

What made you think you needed those?

Well, I've got to do this by the book, sir.

Nonsense. We're on the same side.

Anything you want to know about the company, ask.

If something wrong is going on,

I want to know about it as badly as you do.

If you find anybody in Galveston Industries,

anybody had anything to do with that girl's death,

you let me know, and I'll clean house.

-Fair enough? -Yes, sir. Fair enough.

Hmm. Now, uh, d*ck,

I don't need to tell you to give these gentlemen

your full cooperation in this matter, do I?

Good day, gentlemen.

-Any more questions? -Yeah, I got a couple.

For starters,

what were you doing in Bakersfield

at the scene of the Gary Loader m*rder?

[mellow music playing]

[Verna] I don't know, Ron. She's just not working as well.

Look at this one. Still got egg on it.

Save her for breakfast.

How was your chicken and dumplings, huh?

Those dumplings were something else.

How about some pie and coffee, top it off?

Just coffee. I got to watch the waistline.

Ow.

Okay.

-Well, I got to go to work. -Ow.

I'll try to stop by during my break, okay?

-I will wait. -There you go, ma'am.

Coffee for you. Okay?

-Thank you. -You bet.

-Verna Ehlers? -Not for long.

This is for you.

What did you do? Oh, they're beautiful.

I've never seen anything like this before.

Go get yourself a soda can.

Oh, Parker, no one's ever done anything like this for me.

Oh, they're beautiful.

You want me to take them back to your apartment for you?

No. I want to read what you wrote.

[Verna chuckles]

[gloomy music playing]

What's it say?

"Apologies and wishes for good luck

on your wedding day. Best always, Gary Ewing."

Gary Ewing.

[sighs]

[woman] Karen.

-Oh, more. -You said you wanted everything.

-Yes, I do. -What's all that?

Well, I'm trying to figure out how much Lotus Point money

Gary's invested in Empire Valley.

Why don't you wait till he comes back

from Tennessee and ask him?

Can't wait.

Mack just got warrants

to investigate Galveston Industries.

-He did? -Yeah.

It's the damnedest thing.

Judge turned him down,

and then Greg Sumner came through for him.

Really?

Anyway, it seems to me, we ought to find out

just how connected we really are.

I mean, it'd be kind of embarrassing.

My husband finds criminal activity,

and you and I end up cellmates.

[chuckles]

Is, um, Mack going into Galveston's personal files?

I don't know.

[paper rustles]

You know Mack.

He'll tear the wallpaper off the wall if he has to.

Hi. Yeah, tomorrow's a big day. [laughs]

See y'all later.

Ah, you know...

Uh, Ms. Ehlers, excuse me.

I see you got my flowers. Yeah, sure did.

I hope that means you've accepted my apology.

They're real pretty. I mean you no harm, believe me.

If I had known, I was gonna upset you I...

Look, I thank you for the apology,

but I got a million things to do before tomorrow.

So, if you don't mind, I'm gonna be going home.

Do you mind if I join you?

Just part way.

I suppose not.

Nice town, feel it. Lived here long?

-Yeah, for a while. -Nice people.

-Yeah, they're real nice. -Yeah, I see that.

-How come you're here? -Business?

-In Shula? -Just taking a stop on my way.

What's that funny-looking building over there?

That's our town library, and it isn't funny-looking.

What are you saying? That's a gorgeous building.

The MacKenzie investigation's becoming a problem.

Not to worry. I talked to MacKenzie.

Seems like a reasonable man.

He's getting in the way of the project.

Well, then, when Gary gets back--

That's another problem.

When you invited Ewing into this without consulting us,

you assured us that he could be relied upon

-to push things forward. -Well, he can be.

Instead, he's off on some personal errand,

and nothing is being accomplished.

Have I ever steered you wrong?

Gary will be back soon, and believe me,

MacKenzie is not a problem.

He's asking some embarrassing questions.

-Embarrassing? To whom? -To all of us.

[sighs] I wish, I wish I knew who got those damned warrants.

I thought we'd block that move.

I guess that's what happens

when you have a senator for a friend.

Gregory Sumner got in those warrants.

[dramatic music playing]

Even though four years ago,

General Accounting Office report estimated

that up to 584,000 people on the disability rolls

were capable of working.

Further, a program of such magnitude

would take at least--

What the hell are you doing?

I didn't hear you knock.

What the hell are you doing with Mack MacKenzie?

We're having an affair.

-Would you excuse us, please? -Say anything you like.

-We have nothing to hide. -We all have something to hide.

Speak for yourself, old man.

Look, I'm sure you two gentlemen want to be alone.

I have work to do. I'll be in the other office.

Nice to see you, Mr. Galveston.

Why did you get those warrants for MacKenzie?

Beginning to sweat, are you, old man?

I was right about you, laddie.

You'd throw anything into the pots just to get to me.

You'd have your best friend k*lled,

if that's what it took.

Mack's in too deep for a stunt like that to work.

You know it, I know it, and Mack knows it.

So, tell me what he's uncovered that he got you all wired up.

-I want you out of this. -It's too late, old man.

Get out now or I'll go public with our relationship.

Fortunately, the public's not interested.

Don't hold your breath, laddie.

How do you think the public's gonna feel

when they find out that you've lied to them all along?

When they find out that you m*rder*d a man?

When they find out that you were bankrolled by crooks?

It's sad for me to have to tell you this,

but the public's no longer interested.

You're putting your chips on the wrong color, laddie,

when you get to thinking

the public's not paying attention.

They went to sleep a long time ago.

We'll see, laddie.

We'll see.

[mellow music playing]

-[Joshua] Excuse me. -Joshua, hi.

I brought, uh, a part of this new sermon for you to look over.

Oh, terrific.

Um, would you like some coffee or something?

No, thank you.

Oh, that's good. That's real good.

Oh, that's wonderful.

You're getting better and better.

Well, thank you very much.

You're gonna do the whole sermon this time?

-Oh, yes. -You're not gonna cut it short?

No.

I wouldn't want to cheat your fans.

[birds chirping]

Is Gary really getting through to Val?

It seems so.

I'm grateful for you for trying to find her.

Well, perhaps a word or two to Val in your sermon

might help.

Kathy told me that she used to work for you.

-Really? -I'm a bit confused about that.

Well, Kathy never worked for me.

She told me that you hired her

to make Gary fall in love with her.

Joshua...

why would I want my husband to fall in love

with another woman?

Well, that's what I don't understand.

[giggles]

No, uh, Kathy worked for Gary at the ranch.

Why do you think that she would say a thing like that?

I know how much you like Kathy, and I like her, too.

The little I know about her,

but I honestly think that she's trying to manipulate you.

I don't think so.

Don't you remember our conversation the other day?

Do you think she's trying to keep me from doing this show?

What do you think?

[knocking on door]

Who is it? Who is it? [knocking on door]

Do you want us to give him some more, Parker?

Just relax.

-What the hell are you doing? -I want to mind.

[mellow music playing]

You don't seem to understand our local customs, Mr. Ewing.

Verna asked me to return these.

She doesn't want them!

She doesn't want them, you understand?

We'll be keeping our eye on you.

[thuds]

[soft music playing]

[man] Okay, last chance. Who wants some more...

[woman] Well, I would like some.

Josh, I got the message that you called...

You know...

that my show receives more fan letters

than any other program

that's broadcast by this station?

Ah, that's great. I'm very proud of you.

Between that and the rate that my audience is growing,

Abby's going to have to give me more air time.

And more money.

-Are you all right? -You lied to me.

What?

About Gary, about Abby, about all of it.

-What did Abby say to you? -Answer my question.

-What did she say? -She would never lie to me.

What happened between you and Gary?

Or, or did anything happen at all?

Maybe you just made that up in your mind, huh?

Or is it what you wanted to have happen?

Did you try to seduce him, too?

What else did Abby say to you?

You've got to tell me what she said.

[mellow music playing]

You have to make a choice here.

Either you believe me or you believe her.

[music continues]

[birds chirping]

Hi.

You, what are you doing here again?

I was just taking a walk, thought I'd join you.

Well, you better not. If Parker sees us, he's gonna...

Oh, come on. You're the only person I know

in this whole town, and I like talking to you.

-You are something. -Come on, let me help you.

Boy, he's just real quick.

You know, this reminds me of a place

near where I live in California.

-Yeah? -Yeah.

I've never been across the state line.

-And you've never been married. -That's right.

Must have been engaged an awful long time.

What do you mean by that?

Well, the ring made a pretty good mark on your finger there.

Your parents still living?

-No, they died a long time ago. -Yeah, so did my daddy.

My mother's still living, though. She's, uh, in Texas.

So are my brothers, JR and Bobby.

Look, thank you for carrying the packages,

but I really have to go. I'm running. Come on.

Are you crazy? What are you doing?

-No, come on, we're gonna run. -What?

You'll love it. It makes you feel...

-Run? I hate exercise. -Come on, put your packages.

I don't want to put... this is my wedding dress.

Come on, come on, come on. What are you doing to me?

-Trust me, let's go. -Leave me.

I don't want to run.

Yeah, well, you're gonna like it.

-I hate this kind of thing. -Come on.

One foot in front of the other, that's it.

Hey, it's got fun, isn't it?

-You're real good. Natural. -[laughing]

What are we doing? Well, we're just running.

I thought you'd enjoy it. What are you doing to me?

You were enjoying it. You were having a good time.

No, stop it. Just leave me alone.

Have dinner with me tonight. What?

You know I'm getting married,

and I can't have dinner with you.

As friend. You're the only friend I've got here.

No, just stop it.

-I'll see you tomorrow. -Don't you dare.

[music fades]

[Claudia] I don't think he can hurt you by going public.

-[Greg] Well, you're nuts. -I think he can help you.

Being connected with Paul Galveston in any way

is risky business.

Being his son is a lot more than being connected.

This man is one of the most powerful,

one of the most mysterious men in the entire world.

He makes me sick every time he calls me "Laddie."

Got a lot of leverage here, you know that?

Five part story in both your lives,

and then the real payoff is a Sunday supplement.

It's great, I'm telling you.

Next thing I know,

you'll have me on entertainment tonight.

I'm really serious.

You could make this work for you.

Don't you see that?

Governors, senators, presidents currying your favor.

You are no longer the junior senator, honey.

You are the man with the inside power,

the power that really counts.

Going public's not a bad idea.

Except we've got to protect Mack.

Mack's a big boy. He can take care of himself.

-How can you be so sure? -I can't.

But I don't have a great deal of anxiety about it

at the moment.

Didn't Galveston say to you that he would k*ll Mack

if he got too close?

-You were eavesdropping. -Mm-mm.

-He was shouting. -You were on your knees...

-I was not. -...outside the door

with your dainty little ear

-pressed to the keyhole. -I was not.

Ooh, you devil, you.

We still have to help Mack.

I'm doing everything humanly possible to help Mack.

I am helping him and using him, and he's doing the same with me.

We're sort of washing each other's feet, so to speak.

But between the two of us,

we're going to nail this b*stard down tight.

[soft music playing]

[Paul] I'll be very candid with you.

Our screening process broke down.

-What does that mean, exactly? -That's a fair question.

So, I, uh, decided to conduct an investigation of my own,

and I may have come up with something.

If you have a lead, let me know.

Well, it's not as easy as all that.

You see, this is very embarrassing

to Galveston Industries and to me, personally.

Does any of this affect your work with Gary?

I understand your concern,

but you have nothing to worry about.

With Gary or Lotus Point, we try to maintain a standard,

but when you employ thousands of people,

occasionally a few bad ones slip by.

Which ones? What are their names?

[laughs] One step at a time.

Well, if you know who they are, tell me.

I can't. It's still a conjecture.

I don't want to name someone when they may be innocent.

When will you know for sure?

Tomorrow.

I may have something for you tomorrow.

One way or the other, we'll settle this tomorrow.

-Good night. -Yes, thank you.

-Night. -Night.

He's covering up. I know it.

You don't believe him, do you?

We'll know tomorrow.

[sighs]

-Gary. -Shh. It's okay.

[soft music playing]

[Parker] What the hell's going on here?

Damn you, Parker.

You're not supposed to see me in my wedding dress.

I told you not to come here tonight.

Oh, uh, I just came by to see if everything was all right

and I, uh, see you like this.

Who are you supposed to be dancing with?

Well, if you don't get out of here, it sure won't be you.

You knew it was bad luck to see me like this,

but you had to come mess it up.

I didn't know you had your dress on.

I told you I was gonna be standing on it.

-I didn't know you were... -You just go on and get out.

[Parker] Look, I'm sorry.

[mellow music playing]

There, I think that makes a better balanced week,

don't you?

Yeah.

Ben, how, uh, how are we going in the Galveston report?

-Slowly. -I was hoping for more.

Well, these type of reports take time.

I want that report, Ben, and I want it very soon.

Great.

Paul Galveston is a very powerful man.

He covers his tracks well.

Do you need more help? Is that it?

No, that's not the problem.

Look, I'm putting Joshua's spot on five times a week now.

The revenue from that is available to you.

I told you that before.

I don't think you wanna do that.

I've made it very clear to you what I do want.

Hang on, I'm talking about Joshua.

All the attention he's been getting lately

has been doing some terrible things to him.

You run the news department.

Let me run the station, all right?

We're not talking business here.

You have been deliberately pushing Joshua in over his head,

and I can see it, even though you think I can't see it.

I'll tell you what I do see.

I can see that Reverend Kathrun Show

is finally getting an audience, thanks to Joshua, and I can see

that Joshua's having the time of his life doing it.

What I don't see is the Galveston report

that I asked for a long time ago coming out of your department.

That's what I don't see.

[birds chirping]

[Patrick] I'm gonna be late.

Honey, why do you think Galveston came over last night?

I don't know, you tell me. He's scared.

-Of course, he's scared. -Mm-hm.

This investigation can ruin the reputation of his company.

No, I mean he's scared.

Maybe he's directly involved with the murders.

I've considered that,

but I can't investigate the man in my gut feeling, or my wife's.

Man's a snake.

You be careful he doesn't wiggle away from you.

Don't worry, I'm gonna see him this morning.

And if he wiggles, I'll squash him.

-Go to work. -Hmm.

-Later. -[laughs]

Thank you.

Sign these, please, gentlemen.

Just what is it we're signing?

Your confessions implicating you

in the murders of Lila Maxwell and Mary Farnsworth.

Purely a diversionary procedure.

You're sending us over.

Have to, or at least I have to make a pretense of it.

MacKenzie's getting too close to the dangerous ground

and we've gotta stop him.

Perhaps we could work out an alternate method

of stopping him.

Uh, it's the worst move we can make.

My way is better.

-For whom? -[Paul] The company.

Now, don't be bitter.

You knew there was, uh, this possibility

back at the beginning.

[mellow music playing]

Now... [sighs]

The company will provide you with the best lawyers.

Look, seriously, I doubt if you'll ever go to trial.

You'll remain on salary.

Your families will be taken care of in any event.

[melancholic music playing]

[laughs]

Oh, come on in, Bonnie. You left him on the table.

I knew you'd be back.

What are you doing here?

Once and for all, you're gonna hear me out

if I have to knock you down and hold you.

If you come one step closer.

We've known each other since you were 15.

-We were married to each other. -You get out of here.

We loved each other for a long time

and we're still good friends.

I'm getting married today.

How can you talk to me like that?

We have a daughter, Lucy.

Your name is Valene Ewing.

Would you stop calling me that? My name is Verna.

Verna Ehlers is a character in a book.

A book that you wrote.

You're a writer, a very successful writer.

You're talking like a crazy person.

Nashville Junction is a best seller now.

That's your picture on the back cover.

Would you stop calling me that? Look at it. That's your photo.

That's you, Valene Ewing. Look at it.

-It's not me. -It's your photo.

-No, it's not. -Look at it.

It's not me!

Look at me. Look at me.

You know me better than anybody else

on the face of this earth.

Look at me and tell me

you're getting married this afternoon.

[gloomy music playing]

I'm getting married this afternoon.

No, you're not, Valene.

Here it is.

You're speaking of praise. Praise unto the Lord.

I'm speaking of the sacrifice of praise.

The importance of God's work as selfless work.

But it's not selfless.

You can't expect to sway our viewers that way.

My intention is not to sway.

I'm presenting an interpretation.

There's a difference.

All I'm suggesting is flipping your opening remarks

with the body of the scriptures on page 13.

That way they've had a chance of seeing it before...

you comment on it, here.

Joshua, could I speak to you a minute?

-Excuse us, Reverend. -Just consider that.

What are you doing?

Reverend Kathrun been doing this show for 25 years.

I was just trying to help out.

Don't you think you're a little out of line?

I just thought that the sermon needed more punch.

[Ben] You've done a handful of these shows

and now you're an expert.

Well, I know what's effective, Ben,

and I have the audience to prove it.

[soft music playing]

-MacKenzie? -Mr. Galveston.

Just wanted you to know that I'm as good as my word.

-That was fast. -We aim to please.

You know, these confessions aren't worth a damn

unless they have Woodside and Jamison to go with them.

-Where are they? -Available.

Available.

I told you I'd get to the bottom of this embarrassing matter.

These men committed a series of murders, Mr. Galveston.

And I've delivered them.

I, uh, trust you'll move on it quickly.

[door opens and closes]

[organ music playing]

[laughs] Would you take it easy, old buddy?

She's just being a woman.

Oh, now don't you start, Ron Merriwether.

If I remember correctly,

you wasn't all that prompt to our wedding.

Well, I had a good excuse.

A hangover ain't no good excuse.

Now who was it who said,

"All things come to those who wait"?

Perhaps this is a sign

that we must be patient in all things in a marriage.

[laughs]

You know, what probably happened was,

Verna got a good look at old Parker here

in the daylight, took off, forgot.

Shh.

[organ music playing]

Just hope she's all right.

She's fine. Just relax, huh?

[melancholic music playing]

[tranquil music playing]

Yes or no?

I don't quite understand

why you're making me this offer right now.

Well, it's the same offer I made you earlier,

only now I want an answer.

I want you to run

the Empire Valley Television Station.

We need your experience and your expertise.

But before, you did everything you possibly could

to exclude me from the Empire Valley project.

[Paul] Well, perhaps now I have developed a new respect

for your know-how.

Perhaps now I've come to realize that there's no reason for us

to be on opposite sides

when we can be so effective working together.

Could this possibly have anything to do

with Mack's investigation?

Not at all.

When is, uh, Gary coming back?

Soon.

What does that have to do with it?

I'm offering you protection...

with a secure position with Gary's business interests.

I know where the babies are and I know that Gary is the father.

And when he realizes that,

when he's reunited with his children,

[phone rings]

you might need all the protection you can get.

I suppose this is what you boys call playing hardball.

What's important is,

are you taking me up on my offer?

I'll have to think about it. Karen, can I help you?

Well, I can't find the specs on Crescent Cur,

but it can wait until you're finished.

I, uh, I think we're finished here for the time being.

Excuse me.

What was that all about?

-I'm not quite sure. -Could have fooled me.

What does that mean?

I guess, I'm just wondering what side you're on these days.

I don't want your wallet, just your attention.

Why are you dragging your feet

in the Tidal Basin m*rder investigation?

-Why, who the hell are you? -Don't turn around.

Now, you were getting close.

You made a connection, you got to Bakersfield,

and then you got sidetracked.

Those two men who confessed, are you going to arrest them?

Not right away. Good, don't be sidetracked.

Don't be fooled by this sleight of hand.

They're only a part of it.

Find out who sent them to Bakersfield,

who's giving the orders.

You know so much about the case, you tell me.

No.

No, it's something you must do for yourself.

You're looking in the right place.

You're just not aiming high enough.

I can go as high as Paul Galveston himself,

is that what you're telling me?

Yeah, well, just to make it fast.

If she doesn't show up soon, I'm calling the sheriff.

Relax, all right?

I'm sorry. Are you all right?

Oh, yeah, I'm fine, I'm just...

Sorry that I kept you all waiting.

-You want to sit down? -No, no, no, it's late.

Let's just get started, okay?

Now that we're all here... Now that we're all here--

Are you sure you don't want to go outside?

No, I'm fine.

She wants to get married.

Look, the preacher's waited this long,

he can wait a little longer. Ron, we want to get married.

Oh, you bet we do.

Well, all right then. Get on down front.

-This fella's giving her way. -Oh, yeah, that's right.

Can you help me with my veil, okay? Put it on front.

-Oh, in the front? -Right.

That's it. Okay.

You're on then.

-You ready? -Ron, how do I look?

-Very beautiful. -Oh, Ron.

Do you remember the first time you came here?

You were like a little kid. You were so wide-eyed.

I don't think it would be fitting

for my viewers to see me in a saloon.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here

in the sight of God and in the face of this company

to join together this man and this woman

in holy matrimony.

This is an estate that was instituted by God,

blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ,

to be honored by all men,

and therefore is not to be entered

into lightly or inadvisably,

but reverently, soberly, and in the fear of God.

Into this holy estate,

these two persons have now come to be joined.

Now, if any man can show just cause

why they may not lawfully be joined together,

let him speak now, or hereafter forever hold his peace.
