[Karen] I love... what is this?

[Val] Uh, well, we took that one from our hotel room.

But all I see is water.

Yeah, isn't it gorgeous?

-Oh, Val! -What?

-What is this? -Let me see.

-Oh, see, that's my thumb. -[laughs]

No, the way that one-- Would you stop?

No, come on, taking perfect pictures

is not what was on my mind.

-I'll get it, Mama. -[Lilimae] That'll be Mack.

Oh, you mean you can tell just by the way

-he rings doorbells, huh? -welcome back.

-[chortles] -[laughs]

How was it, was it fun? Don't answer me,

Let me look at you. I can tell. Where is he? Where is Ben?

-Hi, Lilimae. -Hi, Mack.

If you're looking for Ben, he's not home yet.

-Not yet? -No, he's working late.

-Working late? -Yeah.

-Come on. -What?

First day back from your honeymoon

-he's working late? -Would you stop?

Far be it from me to accuse Ben

of being an inconsiderate husband.

How you doing, snookum?

[Karen] Oh...

When I got home from my honeymoon,

I didn't work late at the office, did I?

-Well, no, but... -No, I rushed right home,

-didn't I, sweetheart? -Yes. But to be fair,

Mack, the reason you didn't stay late when we got home

was because you took all of your work with you on our honeymoon.

-I did not. -[Val] You did what?

Yes, you did. You were working on the Citrus Valley landfill

-kickback thing... -An inconsiderate husband, yeah.

That's exactly what I mean. He must have a very good reason

for working like taking care of all the business

-with his new star. -The new star. Who?

-[Karen] Cathy. -[Mack] Yeah, Cathy.

Um, I don't know if you've heard.

-[Valene] What? -Cathy moved back with Laura.

No, I didn't hear. What did Joshua do now?

He broke into Cathy's apartment

and just scared the hell out of, is all.

[sighs] Was Cathy hurt?

-No, she wasn't there. -No.

I just think it was a scare tactic.

I'm so glad that he's out of this house.

I'm telling you, that man is dangerous.

I don't want him anywhere near my children.

Val, he's a ticking time b*mb.

He's about to explode.

[sighs]

There is a dead man at my construction site,

-and that makes me very angry. -[Peter] Yes, I know.

Elliot, it was, uh, unfortunate.

Unfortunate?

Is that all you have to say, unfortunate?

We're not talking about a squirrel here

who ran out in front of a speeding car.

We're talking about a person.

This doesn't seem to bother you.

No, Gregory, it does not bother me.

What does bother me, however, is your reaction to it.

Did I just fall through the looking glass?

Aren't you the guy who used to teach that one of the things

that separated us from the dictators and the tyrants

of this world was the value we placed on human life?

Yes. That was theory, but this is fact.

And the fact is that what we are doing here

is an important and necessary part of our efforts

to maintain our way of life.

Reality, my dear Gregory,

is very often different from theory.

I take that back.

Elliot is not a squirrel to you. Elliot is a bug.

And you stuck your foot out and squished him.

[laughs] You seem to have a gift for the fanciful this evening.

Come here, I want to show you something.

What?

Just step out here.

[dramatic music playing]

I want to show you what the view is like from way up here.

-I don't like views. -Really?

I'm not comfortable with heights.

Then by all means you should take a look.

[suspenseful music playing]

Gregory, have you lost your senses?

I can throw you over this railing

just as easily as your faceless K*llers fried Elliot.

Now, I did not leave the United States Senate

to become partners in a m*rder.

Now, that was not part of our agreement,

and this is never going to happen again, right?

Am I right?

[dramatic music playing]

The thing that makes me so angry

is that Mack's taking this all so lightly,

telling us there's nothing we can do about it.

Frank, Elliot was a good man, and I wanna know what happened.

-What's the matter? -I can't believe I forgot.

-Mr. Elliot called again. -What? Frank called when?

Well, right after you left for the airport.

I'm sorry, I forgot about it until just now.

Wait a minute, you said "again". You mean he called twice?

Well, he did call in the afternoon

when you were at the wedding.

And you didn't tell me?

[sighs] I guess we both forgot.

[sighs] What did he want?

I don't know. He didn't say.

He just said he wanted to talk to you.

-Did he say anything to you? -No, no,

he just said that it was urgent that he speak with you.

[sighs] Damn it.

-I'm sorry. -No, I'm not angry at you.

There's no way you would've gotten a hold of me.

I'm just angry that I couldn't be here.

I might have been able to prevent him being k*lled.

Well, you might have gotten k*lled right along with him.

[dramatic music playing]

[ominous music playing]

Both doors are clear now, Joshua.

You sure that's going to be enough?

[Joshua] Two will be okay.

[soft music playing]

What are you doing going through my things?

Don't touch it!

-Look what you've done. -I didn't do anything.

Just... just get out.

[drawer closes]

She shouldn't have done that.

No more Joshua and Cathy.

No more.

"Say goodbye to Cathy, Joshua."

"Goodbye, Cathy.

You've been bad.

But now you have to be punished."

"Oh, no, Joshua, please don't punish me.

I'll be good, really. I won't go against your wishes.

I won't sing ever unless you tell me to.

I'll be a good wife." "Don't plead, Cathy.

[dramatic music playing]

Now this is for your own good.

[clatters]

[dramatic music playing]

Look.

They want to be together.

What a good idea.

A way that we can be together.

Always.

A rejoining of Cathy and Joshua.

[crashes]

A rebirth of their spirits in heaven.

[tense music playing]

[Phyllis] Frank was big on family.

He could have gone a lot further as an engineer

if he'd been willing to travel more.

And he had a lot of offers.

Brazil, Saudi Arabia.

But he liked keeping his family together in one place.

Yes, it's one of the many things we agreed upon.

That's one of the reasons he liked working for you.

Mrs. Ewing, thank you for putting in

a good word with Mr. Simpson.

I'm uh, I'm pretty sure I got the job.

That's wonderful.

Um... did Frank happen to mention

what he was doing out there Saturday night?

Gary, I don't think Mrs. Elliott wants to talk about that.

[Phyllis] I don't mind.

Except the answer is no, he didn't.

Or if he did, I... I didn't pay much attention to it.

I think you should tell him.

Dad always said we could trust Mr. Ewing.

I don't know how to say this.

You know how he fussed over every job.

Yes, it's one of the things that made him so valuable.

[sighs] Lately...

Well, I don't mean to make him sound like a complainer,

but he seemed real dissatisfied

with the way some things were going out there.

I wonder...

[Phyllis] Don't misunderstand.

I know this has nothing to do with the accident.

I don't blame anybody for what happened.

We always knew that was part of the job.

I've lived with that worry ever since I married him.

Mrs. Elliott, if there's anything at all we can do,

please feel free to call us.

Oh, goodness, you've done enough already.

Frank wasn't very careful about insurance,

and your policy was more than generous.

Well, as long as it covered everything.

$750,000?

I think that should cover things very well. Thank you.

-Thank you both for coming. -It's all right.

That's a lot of money. I didn't realize we carried

that much insurance on our workers.

Don't get me wrong. As far as I'm concerned,

he was worth far more. I'm glad it was there.

It was probably part of the umbrella policy.

-The what? -Well, that's a policy

you take out on workers in case of accidental death.

It's uh, it's really more for our protection

-than anything else. -Oh.

[sighs] What?

It just always amazes me how much you know about.

Well, somebody has to pay attention

to those things, you certainly don't.

That's why I married you.

Really?

Well, that and a couple other things.

[dramatic music playing]

Oh, what was that about Billy Simpson?

Nothing.

Just that when I found out that Elliot's son

was applying to law firms in town,

I-- I called Billy and put in a good word.

That's all.

[soft music playing]

[sighs] What?

That was a really nice thing to do.

Like I said, you always amaze me.

[car engine revving]

[Joshua] In order for two people to come...

to some real kind of understanding,

they have to cease being two people.

And out of this comes the concept of loneliness.

One.

The lonely number.

Even the word lonely has the word one in it.

One, lonely, alone.

-Valene. -What?

That's Joshua.

No one to care for you. No one to care about you.

Mama!

Mama, come back here!

There's another side to the word one.

The-- the fusion of two becoming one.

How often have we heard of that, "They think as one?"

One mind, one soul.

Togetherness carried to its beautiful

and logical conclusion,

a lovely and peaceful way to conclude--

-Joshua. -Oh, Mama, I'm so glad you came.

Mama, come here. Come on.

Mama, don't go. Val, don't go.

There's something I've to tell you.

No, I've nothing to say to you, Joshua.

-Not anymore. -Val, don't go.

I won't get any closer to you, I promise.

I know you're afraid and I understand.

I'm afraid of me.

Especially the way that I was.

But that's all in the past now.

Joshua, I wish we could believe that's true.

All in the past, huh?

The hitting and the shouting, and the...

the mind games, that's all in the past.

I don't think so, Joshua. I don't think so.

But I found an answer.

A way out of the trouble that I've plunged us all into,

if you just let me come home with you and explain--

Not to my house, you won't.

Well, maybe we can find someplace else.

Mama, the only place that I will go with him

is to a psychiatrist's office.

Somewhere where you can get the help that I think you need.

Oh, don't say things like that.

Joshua, that might be a good idea.

Why are you doing this to me?

[sniffles] Why won't you listen to me?

Valene...

[sighs]

I don't need help. I tell you, I found the solution.

Valene, don't be so hard-hearted.

I don't believe his words, Mama,

and I don't believe the tears.

[melancholy music playing]

All right, if you are sincere then you call me,

and I'll make an appointment for you with Dr. Michaels.

I'll even take you to him.

Come on, Mama, let's go. Come on.

[kisses]

Joshua.

[kisses]

[melancholy music playing]

Huh!

It's enough to make me wish.

[sighs]

[sighs] It's enough to make me wish

-we'd never gone away. -How?

That we'd never gone on the honeymoon.

-Don't say that. -No, I mean it, Karen.

He... he... he's absolutely gotten worse.

He's gotten... I don't know, desperate.

You... you should have seen him. He was preaching

in a supermarket parking lot.

-Oh, my God. -I'm telling you,

we never, ever should have gone away.

Well, what good would that have done?

I mean, I-- I was here, Lilimae was here--

No, don't get me started on Lilimae.

She's almost worse than he is.

She is totally blind what he's doing

and what he... what he is.

-He needs help. -I know that.

Val...

he needs professional help.

I know.

Believe me, Karen, I know he does. [sighs]

I even offered to take him to see Dr. Michaels.

Maybe he needs even more than that.

No.

Val...

-Honey, you gotta do something. -No.

Well, do you want us to help?

I don't know, Karen. I don't know.

-You don't know? -No.

Val, look at me.

You take a deep breath.

I want you to go upstairs and get dressed.

I'm gonna bring over Mack,

and maybe he can get through to Lilimae.

All right?

All right.

Oh, it's so hard to know if you're doing the right thing.

We are.

[dramatic music playing]

How about some coffee?

No, how about some answers?

How about some coffee first?

Mack, why is it so hard for you to tell me

whether or not you're working on this case?

Sit down, will you? Calm down. Relax.

Take a load off your feet. Tell me what you've got.

Saturday evening, Elliot tried to call me.

Maria took the call. He said it was urgent,

and then he'd got back to me. He never did.

And there's another thing. [exhales]

Mrs. Elliot told me that our company had a policy

on her husband for 3 quarters of a million dollars.

Our company doesn't do that.

-Where'd the money come from? -I don't know.

All right, no problem. I'll get that information from here.

Two things. One, I'm on the case.

Two, only you know it.

What's the big secret?

The less anyone knows about what we do,

the less they can tell the people at Empire Valley.

And I'm serious about this, Gary. You don't tell anyone.

[chuckles] Who am I gonna tell?

Oh, right. Here it comes, Abby.

Let's all get Abby.

-Come on, slow down. -No, you slow down.

Mack, I am sick of everybody picking on Abby

every time there's something slightly shady going on.

I'm not picking on Abby, but you gotta admit, my friend,

that every time she and Sumner get together,

there's nothing but trouble, and you know it.

No, I don't know that,

and I resent what it is you're trying to say.

-I resent the hell out of it. -Resent it all you want.

I don't want her to know I'm on the case.

As a matter of fact, I don't even want Karen to know.

Gary, when I investigate,

I don't know where the chips are gonna fall.

Now, that's the way I work.

[phone dialing]

Hello? This is Lilimae Clements.

I'm Joshua's mother.

How did you get this number?

My son gave it to me in case I need to get hold of him.

Well, he... he's not here. I mean, he's not here now.

Um... Can I have him call you?

Oh, no, no, no. That wouldn't be convenient.

-Do you know where he is? -No.

Well, he said he was going downtown

to preach in the Mission District.

Well, could you be a little more specific?

I mean, that's a large area. Oh, I'm sorry,

but there's no one here by that name.

Wrong number.

[dramatic music playing]

Self-sacrifice can be either good or evil

depending on the motive of the sacrifice.

When it is done consciously to impress,

to say to others, "Look at me," when it is done for a reward,

then it is evil.

But when it is done with a noble purpose,

quietly, without fanfare,

when it is done for the benefit of another person,

then it is good.

Don't listen to this jerk.

He's a phony.

He's been telling you about morality,

but he's jacked up with my chick,

and all the time he's been married to somebody else.

-Stop it! -Who are you?

Stop saying those things, those lies about my son.

Why don't you get out of here

before I slap you up in your head?

You have no business talking to me.

Before you what?

I'm asking you a question.

Before you what?

Look, man, this is between him and me.

Not anymore, it ain't.

You don't come down here threatening people, man.

Not in this neighborhood. And especially not a woman.

You understand me?

[police siren blaring]

You can count on that!

I think you better take him home.

He don't sound like he's running on a full tank.

-Joshua? -Oh, Mama,

I'm so glad to see you.

And of all places for you to hear about my revelation.

You've had a revelation, Joshua?

Yes, I think I've solved my problem with Cathy.

[dramatic music playing]

A way for us to finally live together in peace.

-Come on home with me, Joshua. -Oh, no, I can't, mama.

-I have something I have to do. -What is it you have to do, son?

-I have to go now, Mama. -Wait, I'll drive you.

I don't need a ride. I don't have far to go, Mama.

-Bye. -Wait, Joshua!

Joshua!

[melancholy music playing]

[Greg] I'm telling you, from now on, we have to be careful.

This whole thing could blow up in our faces.

Are you sure you're not overreacting just a little bit?

These are extremely dangerous men.

They'll k*ll anybody who gets in their way.

-Greg-- -You wanna know

how Coblenz referred to Elliot?

Unfortunate. Unfortunate!

Well, I'm sorry, but it's really difficult for me to believe

that a man like Coblenz, a man who's an advisor to presidents,

is going around k*lling people.

Well, that's exactly why he's so dangerous.

He's used to power.

And nothing and nobody is going to prevent him

from using that power.

You should know that. What's your problem?

-I do know that. -Then what is your problem?

You are! I'm not altogether sure

that this isn't one of your little ploys

to keep me away from Empire Valley again.

You can forget that, kiddo.

You're in this and there's nothing you can do about it.

It's Gary we're trying to keep out of it.

Well, that might be difficult.

He's very upset about Elliot's death.

As a matter of fact, I... I think he's... [sighs]

he's trying to get Mack to investigate it.

No, absolutely not.

We do not want Mack in this picture.

Now, you've gotta keep him out of it.

Well, that might be easier said than done, you know.

Better you than Coblenz and his boys.

[Mack] He needs help.

[Val] I know he needs help.

We all agree on that.

But how do we get him to accept help?

To want it.

Will he turn himself in for counseling?

No! He says he doesn't need help.

I'm sure he thinks there's nothing wrong with him.

If we don't do something, he's gonna get worse.

sNo! You want to commit him?

I won't hear of it.

Lilimae, this is for his own good.

No, it's not for his own good anymore.

It's for all our good.

He's already been rough with Laura.

We know that he beats his wife.

He took a strike at me in there.

[Karen] He wrecked the television studio.

So who's going to be next? Their children?

Is it going to be my babies?

[Mack] Lilimae, he's a violent person.

Under the Welfare Institution Code,

we can commit him for 72 hours just for observation.

Let's get him off the street

so he doesn't do harm to anyone anymore.

[Lilimae] It's not the place for someone like Joshua.

-It's not what he needs. -It's exactly what he needs.

It's all done very carefully.

An emergency psychiatric team

takes him to a medical facility

where he's examined by qualified professionals

and they'll decide just how to treat him.

You don't have to tell me about places like that.

My own daughter committed me to one of those places.

I will not have my son committed there.

Oh! Mama,

we're just trying to come up with some--

No! I don't want my son placed

with a bunch of strangers.

He should be with his own.

All right, fine, but not in this house.

I will not change my mind.

I don't want him anywhere

near Elizabeth and Bobby.

Well, then I'll go live with him.

[door opens]

[siren blaring]

[dramatic music playing]

Bye-bye, Cathy.

[tense music playing]

I can take care of him.

as well as any professional strangers can.

Lilimae, please, don't do this.

Don't close your eyes.

You've seen how Joshua has gotten more and more violent.

-Karen, I'm sorry. -[Mack] Well, I'm sorry, too.

Lilimae, if you won't commit him,

then I'm gonna call cop friends of mine

and we'll put out an all-points bulletin on Joshua.

I'm gonna get him off the street

if I've to put him in jail to do it.

No, Mack, please. He... You can't.

He'll... he'll crack. He'll go crazy.

-I'll go find him. -You know where he is?

-Well, I think so. -Mama, wait.

What do you mean, wait?

What Val means is you can't go alone.

Well, I can't go with anyone else.

I'll find him.

I'm telling you, it's hopeless.

-Oh. -What's the matter?

I tripped. I'm sorry.

[car engine revving]

-Ah! -Come on. Let's go.

[cries]

[screaming]

Shut up!

[door opens]

[metal cracking]

[dramatic music playing]

I'm not going any further.

Oh, yes, you are.

[tense music playing]

[screaming]

[grunts]

-[sighs] Oh, God! -I told you I'd hurt you.

Stop resisting me.

If you knew how wonderful that's going to be

once we get to the top you wouldn't fight me.

[breathes heavily]

-Don't do it anymore! -[cries]

[cries]

Now let's go.

[dramatic music playing]

[suspenseful music playing]

Recently, I have been possessed by a devil...

[sighs]

...an evil force that bred only hatred.

Hatred for the ones that cared for me most.

I received only love from you,

my mother, my sister...

my fans, all my fans...

[sniffles]

And I gave back only hate.

[dramatic music playing]

Hate when I should have felt only love.

How could I hate you?

You were my first love,

my wife,

my life's partner.

It was you that taught me how to love.

[dramatic music playing]

You meant everything to me.

[sobs]

Did you know that at one point

I decided that I had to k*ll you?

I planned it.

I was going to push you off the roof

of a tall building.

Uh, one very much like the one we're on top of now.

[sniffles] Joshua, listen to me. You need help.

Uh-uh.

We'll help you. Lilimae, Valene, we love you.

-But you've got to under... -You don't understand!

-[screaming] -You're not listening to me!

[breathes heavily]

How could I live without you?

I couldn't.

[sniffles] Oh, Josh...

[dramatic music playing]

And with that thought came a revelation

banishing all hatred and ugliness.

[sobs]

And I found a way for us

to be together for all time.

[breathes heavily]

We are going to that noble death.

[cries]

[screaming]

Come with me.

Over this edge is happiness.

[screaming]

[screaming]

[tense music playing]

[screaming]

[screaming]

[screaming]

Over this edge is happiness!

[screaming] Joshua, stop!

Let her go, son!

[screaming]

Do you hear me? Let her go!

Don't interfere, mama.

Do you hear me? Let her go.

Don't do this terrible thing!

[breathes heavily] I'll do what I think is right.

This doesn't involve you!

You're nothing but a willful little boy!

You've trampled on the feelings

and lives of everyone who's ever loved you!

You're cruel to your wife!

Your own sister's afraid of you

-and you lied to all of us! -Mama.

And the worst part is,

the sad part is that I believed you!

Every time you lied to me,

I believed you because I loved you!

Because you were my son, my flesh!

-I am what you made me! -[Lilimae] Oh, stop it!

Stop blaming others for your faults!

I don't care anymore!

I don't care that I was a bad mother!

Or that Jonathan beat you!

I only care that you have become a monster!

And you-- you-- you-- you trample on everybody!

You devour everything you touch!

-Mama! -Don't call me mama!

I'm not your mama!

No more mama! You're not my son.

How could I have given birth to anyone as cold as...

as cruel as...

[dramatic music playing]

Joshua!

Oh, my God!

Joshua!

[Cathy] Joshua!

Oh, my God! [cries]

No!

[cries]

[cries]

No! Oh, my God!

[dramatic music playing]

[theme music playing]

[music continues]
