[theme music playing]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[narrator] Previously on Knots Landing.

Gary, you've got to listen to me.

Because I'm telling you the truth.

She put the g*n

to my head

and forced the pills down my throat.

Would you be embarrassed to admit it

if you had tried to commit suicide?

Doesn't matter what I say,

you're never going to believe me.

Well, now what?

[sighs] A truck will pick you up

and take you to a little town

outside of San Diego.

What have we got going on here?

A little ferry service?

[g*n clicks]

You guys forgot to buy your tickets.

Have you heard from any of them?

[Karen] No.

Have they let the kids go?

[Mack] I don't know yet.

Welcome to America.

[dramatic music playing]

[grunting]

[metal thuds]

-Let us out! -[thudding continues]

[birds chirping]

[whirring]

[thumping]

[groaning]

[breathing heavily]

-It's time. -Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

Wait a minute. What if... What if they're just late?

What if they're not late?

What if they're lost? What if we were lied to?

[car engine revving]

-But where-- -What if they were dead?

[stuttering] Where do we go? Wait a minute!

Mack! Mack!

Mack!

What am I supposed to do?

[metal thudding]

Senor , that's useless.

[indistinct shouting]

It's useless, senor.

It's not going to work!

[indistinct shouting]

[people speaking in foreign language]

[Mr. Leal speaking in foreign language]

What did he say?

He said he'd rather die like a man than like a woman.

Look, we all die alone...

[young man speaking in foreign language]

[gasping for air]

[groaning]

[Mr. Leal pants]

[in Spanish] She doesn't feel well.

[Johnny speaking in foreign language]

[dramatic music playing]

[sighs]

[Mr. Leal speaks in foreign language]

What did you say to him?

I told him Paige is pregnant.

[woman praying in foreign language]

[dramatic music continues]

[crickets chirping]

[sighing] Okay.

[phone ringing]

-Hello. -Karen, are the kids there yet?

No. I thought they were with you.

No, I'm still looking for them.

I thought maybe they'd be home by now.

Looking?

-Where are you? -Tijuana.

Well, what happened, Mack? Where did you lose them?

- Senor! -Hold on.

[man speaking in foreign language]

Wait a minute. You know where the Coyote is?

What do you mean?

I think I can find him. Pero quickly!

-Yeah, yeah. - Vamos!

-Karen. -Mack?

[phone thuds]

[doorbell rings]

[gasps] Michael!

Michael.

-Hi. -Hi.

-You're out. -Yeah.

Oh, you're home.

-I'm... I'm glad. -Yeah, well.

Thanks, I am.

Did Gary bring you?

Uh... No, I... I took a cab.

I... I saw that your lights were on and I...

I thought I'd drop this off before I went... home.

Well, it's just a bag of almond toffee

but... I know it's your favorite, right?

-It is. -Woah, it really did get cold--

Oh, I'm so sorry! Please come in.

-Are you sure? -No, please, come in.

Oh. Okay. Maybe just for a minute.

-I'm... I'm a little... -Yeah.

When were you discharged?

Uh... This afternoon, around... four o'clock.

Ah...

You know, I bought these for the kids, but...

Now that I got them, I think it was a mistake.

I probably should've got them both the same thing

because... They're just going to fight

over which one belongs to which.

I mean, mama's just going to k*ll me.

I know that... [ in deep voice] Mr. Bear is going to want

to go on a picnic with Bobby and...

[in high pitched voice] Ms. Dinosaur is probably

going to want to go for a walk with Betsy, and...

Bobby and Betsy aren't even going to care

about which one, because they always know which...

What's the matter, honey?

Can I spend the night here, please?

Well, I'm glad she's well enough to be out of the hospital.

But I'm sorry the kids won't be staying with us.

It's better this way.

-For whom? -For everyone.

Is that why you agreed to have the kids go stay with Lilimae?

Yep.

It's not because I'm some sort of threat to the children?

I don't think that. You know I don't think that.

Well, I know that Val believes that.

And I thought maybe if you agree with her

it's because you believe that too.

Honey.

Val had some kind of hallucination.

She was depressed, and the pills she took

made her imagine things.

I'm just sorry you had to be the focus for all of it.

Gary, she is so insistent.

What are you worried about?

Nobody thinks you really trekked down from San Francisco

on a wig and forced pills down Val's throat.

I don't care what people think.

I'm worried about what Val might do.

Val would never hurt anyone.

You know as scared as she says she is of me.

I'm equally scared of her.

I mean that.

[dramatic music playing]

You know, I could sell the house

and move but she'd probably find me.

I could check into a hotel with security

but I already have a security system,

and she got through that.

Maybe if I extend the alarm to the yard.

Is it possible to wire the fence? Do you know?

Or a dog. A guard dog. A Doberman.

Maybe a Pitbull?

Nah, they're too erratic and overbred.

But Doberman...

A German Shepherd, the police use German Shepherds.

What do you think?

[sighs] What am I doing?

-Karen? -Huh?

A Doberman or a German Shepherd?

A German Shepherd.

Yeah.

Yeah, I think so too.

[crickets chirping]

[continuous thumping]

[coughing]

[groaning]

That's designed to be burglar-proof.

To keep people from breaking in.

[grunting] Yeah.

Didn't Lucy and Ethel once get locked

in a meat locker like this?

You watch I Love Lucy in Ireland?

Mostly in the bed.

Aborigines in the Outback watching Lucy.

What's happened to your accent?

Too tired to make the effort.

[groans]

[grunts]

Your turn.

Johnny, you're not Irish?

I don't know, Michael. I might be.

I grew up in foster homes.

[breathing heavily]

No one ever... took the time to find out

what my origins were, and if they did

they didn't bother to tell me.

An Irish accent sounds fake even on a real Irishman.

Why'd you bother?

I was scoping out a place for a little snatch and run.

Robbery.

Yeah, Northern Ireland.

And...

I happened to... run into an IRA cell

so I whipped out my brogue.

[in Irish accent] It's not an accent, darling.

It's called a brogue.

I told them I was a sympathizer.

So, instead of blowing my brains out

they put me to work.

That's right about then, the night--

That you met me in Dublin.

What you might call the luck of the Irish.

[groans]

[sighs] Damn.

[Mr. Leal coughing]

We could use a bit of that luck right now.

[coughing continues]

"There's no such thing as the perfect crime."

Isn't that what Mack always says?

But I am sure that Jill overlooked something, some...

detail, some thing, and I'll find it eventually.

God willing, I will find it. What?

-The police investigation-- -What investigation?

They questioned me and they talked to Jill.

That's not an investigation.

Karen, I am sure that she was down here

in Knots Landing that night, not up in San Francisco.

I'm sure that she tried to k*ll me

and I just got to find some way to try to prove it.

[sighs]

Maybe if I went up to San Francisco.

Karen, come with me.

-No. -Well, just for a day.

You could tell Mack it was a vacation.

-I can't. -Why not?

I can't.

Why? Because you don't believe me?

Why would I lie?

I don't think you're lying.

I would never...

never think that.

Then Karen, why won't you help me?

It's not that I... I don't want to help you.

[sobs]

What's the matter?

Karen?

[crying] It's Michael.

[sobbing] They have my baby!

Karen.

[crying] They have my baby!

They have my baby.

[dramatic music playing]

[coughing]

[child speaking in foreign language]

[coughing continues]

[woman speaking in foreign language]

God will not permit that to happen to us.

What did she say?

She asked her mother if we're going to die.

[crickets chirping]

[coughs]

[metal clanking]

What was that?

What?

Shh.

[thumping]

-Hey! -Hey! We're in the van!

There's people in this van!

[indistinct shouting]

[woman] Help us!

We're in the van! There's people in this van!

Quiet!

[child speaking in foreign language]

Shh.

[crickets chirping]

[Mr. Leal coughing]

[dramatic music playing]

Gracias.

De nada.

Thank you.

Gracias.

You are very kind.

[Michael] No big deal.

¿Cómo te llamas?

-Merlyn. -Merlyn, that's beautiful.

Como se llama es...

-doll? -[Merlyn] La muneca.

Florencia Teresa Agustina.

Named after three famous Guatemalan ballerinas.

Oh, does she want to be a ballerina when she grows up?

Why don't you ask her? Her English is very good.

Oh.

I bet you're a great dancer, huh, Merlyn?

Not yet, but I will be.

I'm going to take lessons in the United States.

He needs this more than I do.

He needs nothing anymore.

[dramatic music playing]

[woman speaking in foreign language]

[woman speaking in foreign language]

Not there, either?

[man speaking in foreign language]

Are you yanking my chain or what?

- Como? -You give me the runaround.

Maybe you know where this Coyote is

and you're just not taking me to him.

You don't trust me?

Then you go to hell, senor.

Wait a minute. Come on, Pablo.

Let's keep looking.

Please.

Okay. Pero no more...

Crazy gringo Americano running cowboy stuff here in Mexico.

- Por favor! - Por favor. Yes.

Okay, let's go.

[giggling] Oh.

Little Lit.

-He was little. -[Val] Yeah.

[Karen] Look at him.

I should have gone to all the games.

I thought it didn't matter

because he didn't play that much.

Why did I need to be there, if he just...

warmed the bench?

He never said anything to me about it.

Come on. You were...

You know you are a great mother.

Don't you?

[melancholic music playing]

We were going to go on this trip.

To Yosemite.

He wanted to go so bad.

I canceled it because I had a sore throat.

I thought I was getting sick.

I should have gone.

-Stop that. -[giggles]

-Look at that smile! Sweet. -Sweet.

He used to have trouble.

I wasn't there when he...

He lost that tooth.

His first tooth. I was out of town.

Babysitter got to play the Tooth Fairy.

I can't make that time up to him.

I know.

[melancholic music playing]

I know you know.

[crickets chirping]

[dramatic music playing]

[Michael] All I can see is how lucky I am.

[Johnny] Yeah. Later, when it's 130 degrees in here,

I feel like that old man's the lucky one.

No, really.

To have done the things I've done.

To have the parents I have.

You don't mind being raised by a Yenta?

[scoffs] I mind all the time.

I'm still lucky.

Pollyanna.

Sour grapes.

Alright, fine.

You feel lucky. I feel cheated.

I haven't done everything that I want to do.

-Like what? -I don't know.

But I know there's a lot more out there, so I feel cheated.

You guys are morbid.

If we don't talk about death, it won't happen, right?

So let's not even say the word.

Look, I have no intention of dying here!

I have no intention of looking at him all day!

Shh. Please. Merlyn is asleep.

[Michael] Sorry.

-I agree with you, senora. - Senorita.

I'm not a senora, and I'm not pregnant either.

Oh.

Well, I hope that someday you are lucky enough to be pregnant.

Your children will be very beautiful.

Well, aren't you a little merry Sunshine.

Ah, Paige, stop it.

-Yeah. -Don't give me a lecture!

She is the one who needs a lecture

about bringing a kid into a situation like this.

What kind of a mother would do that?

Why don't you sit down and shut up?

Please.

[sighs]

All of her teachers say that my daughter is very smart.

She could be a doctor or a scientist.

I thought she wanted to be a ballerina.

Paige, I swear to God,

if you don't shut up, I'm going to slap your face.

Yes, a ballerina.

Also, she's a very good writer.

In The United States

she can choose what she wants to be,

you know, just as you did.

In college, she will decide.

Do you even have a place to live?

We plan to live near a bus line until we get a car.

[sighs]

I know American buses are air-conditioned.

And we hope to have a yard with a strong fence.

-A storm fence. Hurricane? -Cyclone.

Cyclone.

And... Maybe we hope to have a microwave and a Maytag.

Oh, bloody dream.

[Diana] God will not permit us to die.

Tres damas.

[laughs]

Herman!

[indistinct shouting]

Alright, alright, alright.

He thinks he's a cowboy, huh?

[man speaking in foreign language]

[woman praying in foreign language]

[metallic crash]

[Paige sobs]

[Michael pants]

[phone ringing]

-Hello, Mack? -[Michael] Hi, mom, it's me.

[sentimental music playing]

Michael?

How are you?

Oh, I'm okay.

We had a close one out here.

But everybody's fine and we're coming home.

Everybody's fine?

Everybody.

Well, hang up and get home.

Okay, mom. Bye.

[sentimental music playing]

Diana, thank you for giving food to my kids.

De nada. They are good kids.

Gracias.

What will happen?

If it's God's will, we will return.

Next bus leaves in 15 minutes.

Let's start lining up.

[officer speaking in foreign language]

Wait one second. Wait.

I... I cannot take your money.

It's not mine. I found it.

No, no, I cannot--

-No, no, no. -Por favor.

Yeah, here, take it.

You want her to be a doctor, right?

Do you know how much it costs for medical school?

Gracias. Gracias.

[bus engine revving]

[horn honking]

[truck engine revving]

Adios.

-Does anybody know about me? -What?

Who knows that we work for your uncle?

Everybody knows.

Well, do they know what we did?

-I don't care. -Well, I do care.

So do me a favor and keep your mouth shut.

According to the rest of the world,

I was an office manager and you were a secretary.

[birds chirping]

[seagulls squawking]

[ship horn blowing]

[dramatic music playing]

[dishes clanking]

-[Val] How's this? -[Karen] Good.

-Looks great-- -[doorbell rings]

They're here!

-Hi. -Oh, hi.

Are they here yet?

-Not yet. -No?

[Abby] We're not too early, are we?

No, it's alright.

-Val. -Hi, sweetie.

How is she?

Fine, I guess. [sighs]

-How are you? -I'm fine.

I just hope that we have enough...

food for everybody.

I... I really understand what you're going through.

I do.

You know, I could take care of the potato salad

if you could just find a platter for the cold cuts.

Val, I know exactly how you feel.

-Believe me, I know. -No, sweetheart.

You don't know.

You think you do, but you don't.

-Karen. -Mack!

Oh! Michael, Michael! You are safe!

Oh, you come here, come over here.

Go on, they're here.

You want to... I'll be right in.

Go ahead.

[Karen exclaiming in joy]

So good to see you!

[indistinct chatter]

How are you?

Even I get a hug from Abby?

Even you.

[indistinct chatter]

[emotional music continues]

Oh, hey, Harold.

This man saved my life, so he saved their lives.

-Thank you, Harold. -You're welcome.

-Who's hungry? -Me!

Come on, let's eat.

[indistinct chattering]

Hello, Mrs. Ewing.

Hello, Harold.

Thank you for... whatever you did.

You're welcome.

-Hungry? -Am I hungry? Are you kidding?

How are you?

I'm alive. How are you?

-I think I'm going to cry. -[chuckles softly]

Well if you think I'm going to stop you, you're wrong.

Oh, you!

-Mom. -What?

-Mom! -What?

How am I going to eat?

Johnny.

Were you there too?

Yeah, I was.

-Why? -It's a long story.

-He got us across the border. -How?

It's a long story.

Do you want something to eat?

Yeah, that would be great.

Um... I'll be a minute. I'm going to take this upstairs.

He lost his accent.

[both] It's a long story.

-Hey! -Oh! Mack!

-Oh, you're back! -Yeah, I am.

I'm so glad everybody is okay.

Okay? We're alive, anyway.

And that's something.

Come on, say hi to Mike.

I will just as soon as I finish this.

-Good to see you. -Good to see you, Mack.

Here, Abby. Have a beer.

Here, Mike.

-Thanks. -What?

-You're too young. -Oh, come on.

-Like hell I'm too young. -You are too young.

And you don't even like beer.

And watch your language.

[chuckles] Ma!

I can't believe...

[sighs]

How much I love you.

[indistinct murmur]

[Olivia] I thought you were never coming back.

[Harold] I didn't want to hurt you.

And you thought staying away wouldn't hurt me?

I mean, I didn't want you to get hurt.

Everybody was against us.

Your mother, my uncle.

I thought the sooner we broke it off

the sooner we'd both get over it.

So did you...

get over it?

I was on my way back here.

I was packed. I had a plane ticket.

And then I heard what you tried to do.

I just couldn't stand not being with you.

That's an excuse to commit suicide?

But I didn't mean...

[sighs]

[whispering] I loved you.

I loved you.

What if I had come back?

Tell me, what if I came back and you...

and you had died?

I'm sorry.

[sobs]

[Harold] I'm sorry too.

[dishes clanking]

Val.

Abby.

-Hi. -How are you?

[stammering] I'm fine. I'm fine.

Is there enough of everything out there?

Yeah. For now.

-I just wanted-- -Abby, please. Just don't.

I just wanted you to know, if there's anything

I can do to help--

Val! I didn't know you were here.

-Of course I'm here, Michael. -Hi.

How are you? We've been so worried.

Oh, listen. I always thought 'lucky to be alive'

was a corny phrase,

but that's exactly the way I feel.

I still can't believe I'm alive.

We were really lucky.

One man died, you know?

-No, I didn't. -It was awful.

I didn't know that.

So where are the kids?

Uh... they're with mom and Al.

It's kind of like a... vacation.

Michael, why don't you take this out

and put it on the table, huh?

-Would you do that? -Okay, sure.

[sighs]

Thank you for what you said before.

About helping.

[water pouring]

Thank you.

[tense music playing]

Suicide? How?

-Pills. -Why?

She said in a suicide note...

That she found out that Ben was dead.

-Poor Val. -Poor Val.

The oddest part about it is...

She denies she did it.

How can she deny taking pills, Karen?

She said Jill forced her to take them.

That's just... sad.

This is weird.

-We're here. Hello! -Hi!

Val! What a nice surprise. Here, Julie honey.

Will you take this an put it in the other room?

We saw them arrive, thought we'd bring the stuff over.

-You look so pretty. -Thank you.

How are they?

Well, they... They all seem fine.

And how are you?

[Michael] Yeah, I'm okay. I'm fine .

Um... Fine.

If anyone comes up here,

I'm going to have a hell of a time

explaining what you're doing in my bedroom.

Just tell them you're making slow, passionate love.

Yeah, you wish.

Paige, not that same old song.

Do you have any other interests?

Let me think about it.

Yes, I do.

Making fast, passionate love.

So what are you going to do now?

Here? Now?

Now that you've lost your brogue

and now that everyone knows that you're a fraud.

And now that you have no job.

Well, you know me.

I always land on my feet.

I know someone's always under your feet when you land.

[chuckles]

So what was the word you won with?

-Madrigal. -Madrigal.

-M-A-D-R-I-G-A-L. -Right!

-[Abby] Well, congratulations. -Thank you.

Yeah, if I'm lucky I'll get to go to the regionals.

You won't be lucky, you'll be good.

[chuckles]

So good to see you two.

-Glad you're back? -Yeah.

My little darling.

Abby's being so nice to everyone.

Mhm.

What's up? What does she want?

[indistinct murmur]

[doorbell rings] I'll get it.

Next person that comes through this door

I'm going to take them out first.

[softly chuckles]

Good evening. I'm Officer Kaminski.

This is Officer Adderley.

-Mrs. MacKenzie? -Yes.

Can we come in?

Of course.

What is it?

One of your security officers

found a quantity of ill*gal substance

down at Lotus Point.

Cocaine.

We'd like to ask you a few questions about it.

[Mack sighs]

Surely you can understand our position.

We have no control over what our guests

bring into their cabins.

Well, according to the security guard,

Carl.

Carl claims that he reported several instances

of suspicious behavior by Manny Vasquez

to Mrs. MacKenzie,

and she ordered him not to investigate.

Ordered?

Mr. Vasquez was unloading

his boat late at night.

Carl asked me about it.

I told him it was food for a party.

Why don't you ask Mr. Vasquez about it?

Gentlemen, look, we've had a very tiring day.

My son and daughter just came home,

and we're in the middle of a celebration.

And although we're very upset by what's happened

both Mrs. Ewing and Mrs. MacKenzie

intend to cooperate fully and enthusiastically

with any investigation.

Furthermore, we have discussed possible drug dealings

with federal and state agencies and they'd be more than happy

to share their reports with you.

So if you have any further questions,

we want to have an attorney present.

Come on.

-We'll be in touch. -Yes.

Thank you.

Gregory.

-Oh! -Meg!

Hello, Meggie!

-Yeah, hello. -Meggie!

How are you? How are you, huh?

[indistinct chatter]

Look, I'll be home most of the evening.

If you want to give me a call,

I'll be there almost at any time.

[Greg] I don't know how you keep your shape

with all that food you eat.

-Hi. -Hi.

Did you bring back any souvenirs?

Yeah. My skin in one piece.

I was thinking something more along the lines

of pre-Columbian.

Excuse us.

Listen.

When you have a minute.

I need a couple of your John Henry's

on the South Cork Biomedical deal.

This is hardly the time.

[Gregory] I've been discreet. I left it out in the car--

[Abby] Greg!

I got a lot of money tied up in this deal.

[sighs]

No, not now.

It's not right.

"It's not right?" What does that mean?

-Here you go. -There you go.

There you go.

You know, you're more beautiful than ever.

-Mommy. -Mommy!

Do you want some help?

With what, hun?

-With the dishes or-- -No, no.

That's okay. I got it all under control.

Hey, if I said anything about... before

-I mean-- -Don't worry about it.

I'm really sorry about Ben.

They just told me he was...

I'm really sorry.

You know, he was... Ben was really...

Yes, Michael. He was really. Yeah, I know.

-Mommy. -Can I take her?

Come on. Come here, you.

-Mommy. -Yes.

Honey.

-We got to go home, it's late. -Mom.

Harold.

I hope you'll come by sometime and visit soon.

I'd like to very much, Mrs. Ewing.

[Karen] Help yourself.

-Everyone's on the run. -Yeah. Okay.

Wait a minute.

Come on, Val.

What?

-How are you? -Oh, please!

I swear, Mack, if one more person asks me that--

-Val! -What?

-They just want to help. -No, they don't want to help.

They're waiting out there to check me out.

Pass judgment on me

for something that I didn't even do!

-They just want to help. -They do not want to help!

[loud clank]

I didn't...

I don't know what all of you've been waiting for.

And I don't know what you've been thinking about me.

But I do know one thing.

I did not...

I did not try to k*ll myself.

[dramatic music playing]

[Karen] Val.

Val.

Are you okay?

I'm okay.

I am scared... to death.

[softly] But I'm okay.

I remember when he was a baby.

I used to come in and...

make sure he was still breathing.

I'd like to set up a cot outside his door.

It's over, Karen.

[eerie music playing]

I know how Val feels.

Crazy?

[chuckles softly]

Isolated.

Everyone tried to be nice.

But I know what it's like to feel so...

Isolated.

You do too.

Ever since we've been

in this witness protection program,

we've been cut off from...

everything that we knew.

Everything that we were.

Isolated is better than dead.

Isolated means safe.

[inhales deeply]

[eerie music playing]

[tapping]

[gasps]

[suspenseful music playing]

[male narrator] Next on Knots Landing...

I know you're worried about Jill Bennett.

-But I think you're safe. -You think I'm safe?

She'd be a fool to try anything now that you've told everyone.

[Abby] We have 35 cancellations

and 22 early checkouts. We have to issue a statement.

Any answer we give is going to make you sound guilty.

We tell the truth.

I need Jill Bennett's bank statement

for the last three months.

I am not going to let you fall apart again.

She is never going to leave me alone,

as long as you're anywhere near me!

Get out of here!
