sn*per!

sn*per!

[Greg] Mary-Frances.

[people screaming]

Get out of here! Get out!

Stay here, Mort.

Get away from those windows! Go back to your office.

You'll have to move, Mr. Sumner.

Get down!

You have to move now, sir.

Get down, I said!

You're going to have to move, sir.

We can't have you staying here.

[theme music]

[narrator] Previously on Knots Landing.

And it's just so not me.

Divorced twice and now marrying a man nobody else likes.

Val, you don't have to rush into this.

God is watching. Greg?

That's my boss. He likes to joke.

Should I be jealous?

It's a professional relationship.

[woman on the phone] It's your daughter.

-Meg? -Meg?

No, it's me, dad. Mary-Frances.

You're an Oakman.

I've been called a lot of things in my life,

but I've never been called an opener.

You're the most corrupt man I've ever known.

You're slime.

[Mary-Frances] Guess you haven't changed much.

Hi, daddy.

It was easier for you to send checks than to see me.

Your mother didn't think I was suitable father material.

[suspenseful music]

[expl*si*n]

[theme music]

[Michael] Mom, Greg's daughter has been shot.

-Mary-Frances? -Yes.

Mack.

Mary-Frances...

What?

Mary-Frances, she's been shot.

They say she's dead.

Michael thinks she's dead.

What's the matter?

Nothing, honey. Why don't you just

help us do the dishes?

Did they catch whoever...?

They don't even know who it is. There's a sn*per.

[Karen] Where?

At the downtown headquarters.

[Karen] Michael.

They want to evacuate this floor.

Michael, where are you?

I'm at work, don't worry.

Get out of there.

Wait here for the security guard.

He'll take it out single file, okay?

I'm okay, mom. I have to go.

They're evacuating the floor.

Michael.

[Michael] I'm fine.

I'll call you later.

[dramatic music]

[hangs up phone]

[Meg] Mommy, are you upset?

Who did it?

They thought it was just another lunatic with a g*n.

You know, sh**ting at anything that moved?

But there was only one shot.

A layout, somebody was trying to hit the old man.

Okay, let's move it along.

Let's move along now.

Shhh.

[somber music]

[male reporter] Authorities at first feared

that the b*llet which k*lled Mary-Frances Sumner

came from a sn*per sh**ting at random targets.

But since only a single shot was fired,

apparently from a high-powered r*fle,

sources at the scene now tell us,

the police now believe that the b*llet was intended

for the woman's father, former Senator Greg Sumner.

[phone ringing]

Tom Ryan.

Yeah. Yeah.

[reporter] ...personnel are current being taken down...

[Tom] Really?

Alright. Alright.

[hangs up phone]

I've just been assigned to that case.

-You? -Yeah.

Me and about half the other detectives on the force.

It's nice to be rich and famous.

Why are you so cynical?

I'm not cynical. I'm a public servant.

Would you stop it?

What's the matter? You know him or something?

No.

So what's the matter?

I work there. It could have been me.

Sorry.

It's not funny to joke about m*rder.

I'm not joking, alright?

See you later.

[male reporter] Mary-Frances Sumner had worked

for several years in an international program.

She had only recently returned for a visit with her father

following several years work in developing countries.

According to a spokesperson for Mr. Sumner,

Mary-Frances and her father were very close.

[Mack] Mom.

Hi. Bedtime.

-[Meg] No! -[Mack] Yes.

Come on, give me a kiss.

Okay, goodnight.

-[Karen] You too. -Oh.

-Mwah. -Say goodnight.

-[Meg] Goodnight. -[Karen] Goodnight.

-[Mack] I love you, mom. -[Meg] I love you, mommy.

-[Mack] Say goodnight. -[Meg] Goodnight.

[male reporter] We'll bring you further information

on the details of this k*lling as they become available to us.

[indistinct chatter]

[Paige sighs] Tom.

What are you doing here?

I work here. Will you let me by?

No, immediate family only.

Well, make an exception.

- I can't. -Yes, you can.

I don't want to, okay? It's too dangerous up there.

There is no immediate family.

[Paige] Yeah, I know.

I heard about it on the news.

She was nice.

If there's anything I can do, let me know.

Thanks.

[elevator beeps]

Did you receive any death threats recently?

Not that I can remember.

We forward any threats to the Sumner group personnel,

to the police.

Do you keep your own records?

Yes, we do.

I'd like to have that file.

Can you think of anyone who would want to k*ll you?

-Do you have a phone book? -Why?

Start with the A's.

[dramatic music]

[indistinct chatter]

[suspenseful music]

Appreciate you coming over like this.

Oh, Mack. I'm happy to do it. No problem.

Yeah, well, we just thought that,

you know, you'd want all her clothes.

Oh, sure, sure. I understand that.

Alright, we'll be right back.

Okay, Mack, go.

Yeah, she's all set.

She's had a bath, and after she finishes a snack, she...

Meg, what do you do after you eat?

Brush my teeth.

[both laughing]

Okay, thanks.

-Oh, my pleasure. -Right.

-Not to worry now. -[Mack] Okay.

We're gonna have fun, aren't we?

[Karen] I think this is everything.

Did you call?

Carlos said he wasn't home.

[doorbell rings]

And if he's not there, we'll just, we'll leave it.

Oh.

Greg, I'm so sorry, I was just going to see you.

Thanks.

-I'm sorry, man. -Thanks.

I came by to pick up her things.

Well, we were just bringing them to you.

This is it?

Yeah.

[doleful music]

Have you talked to her mother?

Not yet.

You don't want Jane to hear about it in the news.

-So, I mean, if... -No.

Do you want me to call her?

I appreciate it, Karen, but I have to do that myself.

[Meg] Daddy.

[emotional music]

-[Meg] Daddy. -[Mack] Yes?

What? What?

You forgot to give me my goodnight hug.

No, I didn't, sweetheart. No, I didn't.

There you go.

Okay, honey.

[emotional music]

[Meg] Who's that man?

Just an old guy who didn't get his hug.

[emotional music]

Well, thanks.

-Thanks. -Umm.

If there's anything we can do...

just call me if...

[Karen sighs]

Please, accept my condolences.

Thank you, Carlos.

-May I? -No, I'll get it. Thanks.

I'm over to see if you needed any help.

I picked up her things.

I keep 100 attorneys employed full time,

writing a will to dispose of my estate,

and Mary-Frances exits with a lousy duffel bag

to her name.

[unzips bag]

"Graham Greene."

Graham Greene?

I don't need to stay.

She had on a blouse like that.

[Greg] Well, you know, not the same fabric,

but like that, green slacks.

Army color, crap, what do you call it?

-Olive. -Olive.

Olive.

Uh, look, I gotta call her mother.

I haven't spoken to her in five years.

I hope this number is the same.

[picks up phone]

[dialing]

[phone rings]

[Jane] Ugh.

[phone rings]

Hello?

Jane?

Greg?

Hope I didn't wake you up.

What's the matter?

[sighs]

Greg.

W-what is it?

[sighs]

Greg?

[dramatic music]

Greg, why are you calling?

Mrs. Sumner?

I'm a friend of your...

...of Greg's.

For obvious reasons, the Church would like

to make sure that those who marry under its auspices

take marriage seriously.

We do.

Very seriously.

Val, this is your... third marriage?

Yes.

And last.

-Danny? -That's my second.

[whispering] Gary.

Gary, they even set the date, March 10th.

That's not two months away.

That's why I called, honey.

Alright. Well, thanks. Umm...

Keep an eye on the kids for me, alright?

Of course, I will.

Bye, Gary.

There's got to be something I can do

to stop her from marrying him.

-Maybe not. -Maybe not?

Maybe you have to let go of this.

Maybe no one can persuade her.

Yeah, right. And she deserves what she gets.

I didn't say that.

I'm sorry.

Nobody deserves what happened to you.

But she is so stubborn.

[grunts]

Okay, if I can't do anything about it,

I can't do anything about it.

But what about the kids?

[sighs]

[melancholic music]

Good morning, sir. Security.

Good morning.

I hope I didn't disturb you.

[music continues]

Morning, Carlos.

Who brought the army?

Oh, your director of security services, sir.

Where's Paula?

The director of security services advised her

to stay at home, for the time being.

Director of security services.

I gotta meet this guy. Sounds like a million laps.

[music continues]

[Tom] Who was the last person to see Mr. Sumner

before the sh**ting?

His daughter, apparently. Or the receptionist.

No, I mean his last professional contact.

His last appointment?

No, I'd have to get

his appointments calendar for that.

Who keeps this ledger?

-Polly is our receptionist. -It was a temp.

We'd like to speak to the temp.

He refuses to come back to work here.

We'll need his name and address.

[Mort] Bob will get that for you.

What happened to your regular receptionist?

Polly must have been out sick.

-Polly quit. -[man 1] When?

[Mort] Day before yesterday.

[man 1] I haven't seen the paperwork.

Why did she quit?

She's opening her own business.

We need Polly's name and address.

[Mort] Bob will get that.

[indistinct chatter]

Okay.

What are you doing here?

I'm on assignment.

Stop it.

Come on, don't you think this is funny

that I got assigned to this case and here I am in your office?

I don't think anything about this is funny.

Why are you taking this little bit personally, Paige?

What-what are you doing in here?

I'm interrogating you.

No, you're wasting time.

There are 50 people on this case, Paige

because the victim's daddy is a celebrity.

They are all asking the same questions.

They're all getting the same answers.

"I don't know. I don't know."

You tell me.

Why would anybody want to k*ll Greg Sumner?

I don't know.

See?

Well, I know that he had a lot of enemies,

one of whom could afford a contract,

and unfortunately for his daughter,

the sn*per had bad aim.

Or bad eyesight, either way, end of story.

Do you think that being blase about all this impresses me?

Paige, I am sorry for the big shot, okay?

I really am.

But I'm also sorry for the parents of that teenager

k*lled in last night's drive by sh**ting,

And there are no 50 detectives on that case

because nobody knows the kid's name.

Not that it even matters, okay?

Because the little piddly interrogation

that we're doing here isn't going to turn up

anything either.

We're just jumping through hoops because he is a big shot,

Champion of the common people.

Let me tell you something.

Sooner or later, we all have to jump through hoops.

Even you.

But we don't have to pretend that we don't know

when we're jumping through those hoops.

[opens and closes door]

Cancelled at the last minute.

Why?

[suspenseful music]

[Bob] That was something to do

with the Richfield account.

[Mort] Or not.

[man 2] What?

I only meant that their meeting might have had

a personal component.

[Mort] Mr. Sumner and Miss Matheson

-have a history. -[man 2] A history?

They have a warm friendship.

Close friendship, intimate.

[man 2] This may be inappropriate.

Why? Gets Paige off the hook, doesn't it?

[Mort] I mean, is she going to try to k*ll

the goose that lays her golden egg? Huh?

Is she? I mean...

-Thank you for your opinion. - De nada.

-[Ricardo] Robert Willis. -[man 1] Oh, he was--

[Mort] He was the CEO of Oakman Industries.

[Ricardo] Was?

Mr. Sumner fired him.

Was the firing acrimonious?

Was their animosity?

[suspenseful music]

Did they fight, yell? Uhh...

Were any threats made?

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn.

Mr. Willis's contract...

provided very generous severance benefits.

He had a golden parachute?

Very golden.

There would really be no reason for Robert Willis

to feel vengeful.

[suspenseful music]

[Tom] Robert Willis?

Yes.

Sir, Detective Tom Ryan.

This is my partner, Detective Ricardo Fonseca.

[Robert] Uh-huh.

What can I do for you, gentlemen?

Well, sir, I would like to talk to you

about your working relationship with Greg Sumner.

You're investigating the attempt on his life.

Oh, we're investigating his daughter's death.

[sighs] What a tragedy.

Sir, this is a routine procedure.

We're just talking with anyone who spoke

with Mr. Sumner the week before his daughter was shot.

Any way I can help you, gentlemen?

Come aboard.

I don't think I have the stomach to go after Oakman.

Why?

Because there's no new evidence?

Because of Greg Sumner's daughter.

The worst punishment I could wish on that man

is not as bad as what just happened to him.

So you're going to give it up.

Well, it's probably nothing more than a pension fund robbery,

and he did make good on that.

And even if there was, you can bet Sumner

had layers of legal protection.

[woman 1] You did your job.

There's a lot of retirees better off because you uncovered

the pension fund scam.

Jerry Maddox stood up to them.

And like that they k*lled her to shut her up.

And like that they framed one of their own attorneys

for her m*rder

and Sumner was just as fast to refill that that pension fund

when it became public.

And to you, this means?

There's something more than the pension scam.

Bingo.

So, are you going to drop your investigation?

I can't.

So even though you were fired as CEO of Oakman Industries,

your personal relationship with Mr. Sumner was unaffected.

My personal and professional, detective.

I brought in a brand new management team

that's well within the discretion

of the parent company.

None of us take this personally.

[Robert] I still count Greg among my friends and my

professional colleagues.

I have full confidence that he feels the same about me.

Okay, well, thank you for your cooperation,

Mr. Willis.

-Anytime, gentlemen. -Thank you.

Detective Ryan.

Go ahead, I'll catch up.

Your partner, does he know?

About you? No.

-About you. -No.

Yeah, we don't want them picking up any bad habits, huh?

[indistinct chatter]

[dramatic music]

Good morning, sir.

This glass is bulletproof.

We've already finished installation in your office,

but I don't think it's a good idea for you

to spend too much time there right now.

As a matter of fact, we set up temporary offices

for you in a more secure location.

Thank you.

[suspenseful music]

[door opens]

"Every four hours, as needed for pain."

"Dear Robert, you were born to live here.

"What are you doing back there? Never mind, I don't...

...want to know. You'd better miss me."

Must be Robert.

[melancholic music]

"Julie Klages."

Julie Klages?

You cannot marry them.

I don't marry couples, they marry each other.

I'm only a witness.

The man is a r*pist.

That's a very serious charge.

Yeah, it is. That's why they can't be married.

-Does Valene know about it? -Yes.

She doesn't believe me.

Why not?

Because there wasn't enough evidence to convict him.

So it's only an allegation.

Yeah, but it's the truth.

What's your relationship to Val and Danny?

[Gary sighs]

I'm her ex-husband, but that's got nothing to do with this.

[man 3] Mr. Sumner?

Mr. Sumner, the Director of Security Services

requests that you wait inside the house.

Thank him for me, I prefer to stay out here.

As you wish, sir.

We still have time. My mother's flight was delayed.

Is that inconvenient for you?

Sarcasm becomes you.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I thought you were on the job.

Or are you actually here in respect for the dead?

I'm here with you. Didn't you know that? A date.

And I want him to know that I'm your date.

What is that supposed to mean?

What that means is you didn't tell me that you

and the boss man there used to be an item.

Well, you didn't tell me all the names

of those women you used to date.

-You want to know? -No.

Doesn't matter anyway. It's not the same.

You're still hung up on that guy.

Excuse me, but who,

who's the guy that's talking to Paige?

Tom Ryan.

What's he do?

He's a police detective.

He's a cop?

Are you jealous of a man whose daughter just got k*lled?

I'm not jealous, Paige. I'm defensive.

No, you're jealous.

You're acting like a ten-year-old.

Thanks for coming.

Are you crying?

Is that what absentee parents do?

Cry at their children's funerals?

Do you think my mother will cry at my funeral?

I don't know. Maybe you should ask your mother.

Parents who aren't around when their children need them

sometimes get the opportunity to be parents

when it doesn't matter anymore, when it doesn't cost anything.

[Paige] This is your big opportunity, Greg.

Make the most of it.

You just have to show up at her funeral.

-Hey, man. -[Mack] Hi, Tom.

Well, they recovered the b*llet, but still no sign of a g*n,

no shell, no trace of the assassin.

Yeah. What are the odds they're going to find one?

Not good. It's professional hit.

-Does a professional miss? -Yeah, well...

So what about that WDA?

Is he going to take on your crusade against Oakman?

Not yet.

So what are you gonna do? Drop the case?

Are you kidding?

-Mack. -Harold.

Harold, this is Tom Ryan.

-Tom Ryan? Tom... -How are you?

-You guys know each other? -I think so.

Oh? I don't think we've ever met.

No? I could have sworn I...

I knew you're from somewhere.

[Harold laughs]

Sorry, I held you up. My flight was delayed.

No problem.

[Danny] Told the kids were getting married yet?

[Val] Mm-hmm.

-[Danny] And? -[Val] Oh...

Oh, is that for mommy?

Oh, what a sweetie. Come here.

-I love you. -I love you too, mommy.

What was their reaction?

-Didn't exactly jump with joy. -I didn't think so.

I'm going to be m*rder*d in my sleep.

-[laughs] Come on. -No, I can see it coming.

You'd think Bob is the one who would do it,

but I saw that steely cold look in Betsy's eyes.

She'll use something of Bobby's so that he'll get the blame.

They'll accept you.

-Yeah? -Yeah, soon enough.

When?

Eventually.

[chuckles]

No, eventually...

Mm-hmm.

I want to adopt them.

I know, I know, it's a little premature.

I'll tell you, I've been dreaming about it.

Even though it wouldn't sit very well with Gary.

No, it wouldn't.

Have you spoken to him lately? Did you, uh...?

Did you know we had a little meeting?

He, um...

-[laughs] -[Val] What?

...tried to k*ll me.

What?

I mean, maybe he only wanted

to break a couple of bones, I don't know,

but...

He attacked me with a baseball bat.

-You're serious? -[Danny] Yes.

[scoffs] When?

A couple of weeks ago?

He tricked me into coming into the ranch

to talk about Amanda's problem.

[scoffs]

I don't believe this. Why didn't you tell me?

I didn't wanna worry you.

Besides...

I doubt he'd do anything like this

ever in front of the kids.

No, of course he wouldn't.

Well...

As long as this has become a depressing conversation,

you may as well know.

What?

The minister called me. Gary spoke with her.

And?

He told her that we shouldn't get married

because of this r*pe business.

[male priest] Oh, God.

Your beloved son took children into his arms.

Blessed them.

Give us the strength to entrust Mary-Frances

to your never failing love and care.

And lead us all into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Most merciful God,

whose wisdom is beyond our understanding,

deal graciously with Mary-Frances' parents

in their grief,

surround them with your love,

that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss.

Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress.

Draw near to us who mourn for Mary-Frances,

and dry the tears of those who weep.

Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our sister.

Let our faith be our consolation and eternal life our hope.

Amen.

Gary, I don't know why you're doing all this.

I don't know why you're treating Danny like this.

But I'm going to have to ask you this.

If you love me...

you must leave me alone.

I can leave you alone.

But I can't forget about my children.

And you will not leave him alone with them.

I don't believe you.

Stupid of me, to think that you could be reasonable.

-You just stay away from us. -Stay away?

Yes! Do you think you can do that?

Wherever you are, wherever my children are,

I'm gonna be watching.

-And at your wedding... -[Val] Gary!

when the minister says if anybody has any objection

to this marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace,

I'm going to speak.

I'm going to yell "r*pist, r*pist, r*pist."

You look good with all that gray hair.

It's not fair.

But what's fair about anything?

[melancholic music]

Would you like to stay here?

I don't feel like staying, thanks.

I have a 7 o'clock flight out.

I'll drive you to the airport.

Okay.

I'm sorry.

I don't blame you, Greg.

I know.

Sometime, sometime, Greg, I'll be able to say

all those things I'm supposed to say

in order to make you feel better,

but right now...

[crying] I feel so angry.

I feel so cheated.

She turned out well.

I mean, as an adult, she...

[crying] I wouldn't know.

I wouldn't know.

She spoke as if you knew each other well.

I...

I hadn't heard from Mary-Frances for three and a half years.

[melancholic music]

-Jenny? -Mm-hmm?

I want you to tell me anytime that Gary drops by

and I'm not here.

And I want you to let me know anytime

he makes any accusation against Danny.

And from now on, when he takes the kids anywhere,

I think you should go with him.

Oh, Valene, now you're not afraid of Gary.

I'm afraid of what he might say.

So if he ever criticizes Danny in front of the children,

I want you to stop it...

and I want you to bring them home immediately.

Do you hear me?

Mm-hmm.

-Jenny? -I hear you.

Look, I'm not asking you to spy on Danny, exactly.

Oh, hell yes I am, but only because of the kids.

I have to tell you, I've never seen Danny

do anything but be nice to those kids.

Great, I'm glad to hear it.

But I got to tell you something,

I know he's capable of violence.

-Gary. -Okay, let's say I'm wrong.

I'm wrong, alright? Hope to God I am wrong.

I hope he'd never harm a fly, let alone my son and daughter.

But what does it hurt to keep an eye on him when you can,

for the sake of the children?

I'm embarrassed to tell you this.

But the only reason I am is because...

not telling you might be worse, okay?

Gary has been saying some awful things about Danny.

And sooner or later you're going to hear them,

so I just wanted to tell you ahead of time.

That you should ignore Gary if he starts...

you know, if he starts badmouthing Danny.

[suspenseful music]

You let me know if he ever raises his voice to them

and if he ever hits them or threatens to hit them.

You call me right away, now you've got my car phone number.

Shhh. Here she comes. Gary, go out the back way.

[suspenseful music]

What legal recourse do I have?

-None. -None?

My children are going to be living under the same roof

as a r*pist and there's nothing I can do about it legally?

I don't believe it, but I'm...

I'm actually becoming afraid of him.

-Afraid of Gary? -Yes.

Do you know he has already attacked Danny twice?

Once with a baseball bat?

-Gary? -Yes, Gary.

I should have k*lled him when I had the chance.

Hey, don't talk like that.

He just won't listen to anybody.

Well, he's just afraid for the kids.

I'm afraid for the kids.

[Val] I'm afraid of the effect he's going to have on.

[instrumental music]

I'm just sure he's going to interrupt our wedding

with something, some... stupid stunt or something.

He is not going to let go.

I can't let go.

[sentimental music]

[Mary-Frances] I really believe that I meant you no harm.

I really thought in those days that I acted from love.

There is a time in life when a man

with a little acting ability...

is able to deceive even himself.

Remind me never to read Graham Greene.

It's me, dad. Mary-Frances. Can we get together?

[sentimental music]

Hi, daddy.

[Greg] How's your mom?

[Mary-Frances] Fine.

I hadn't heard from Mary-Frances for three and a half years.

[Greg] What are you researching?

You don't even know one thing about me.

[Mary-Frances] You don't even know one thing about me.

[Greg] I may not be the best of fathers, but...

I'm not to blame for all the ills in the world.

[Mary-Frances] Never see the end results

of your actions.

[sentimental music]

[Jenny] The union of husband and wife in heart, body,

and mind is intended by God

for their mutual joy.

Therefore, marriage is not to be entered into

unadvisedly or lightly, but with reverence,

deliberately and in accordance to the purposes

for which it was instituted by God.

Give Valene and Daniel wisdom, and devotionally...

This isn't the big wedding that I thought mommy

was planning.

She decided, honey, to have just family,

[Jenny]...a comfort in sorrow and a companion in joy.

-Into this holy union... -[knocks]

...Daniel and Valene now come to be joined.

If any of you can show just cause

-Next on Knots Landing . -Danny and I eloped.

-You're... -Married.

Somebody wants you dead.

You come into this neighborhood with a platoon of bodyguards

bringing attention to us, just telling the whole world

that your other daughter lives here.

You must have been one hell of a father.

You're so racked with grief and guilt.

She caught your b*llet.
