11x21 - Good News, Bad News

Post by bunniefuu »

We could look on the bright side of all this. We choose to.

We're taking to using the majestic plural, have we?

I'm serious.

People who have come close to them often feel

that they've been given a second chance.

I don't wanna get my hopes up.

Do you expect me to believe that you are such a big boy

that coming close to death hasn't affected you?

You mean, have I re-examined my priorities?

Yeah.

Would you do anything differently?

-Yeah, I can think of one thing. -I knew it.

Tell me.

You're the only woman who's ever kept me at bay.

[theme music playing]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[narrator] Previously, on Knots Landing...

I just want to tell you that

I'm not gonna give up on you.

Anne.

Don't you have anything else you can put on?

By the way, how's Karen?

[Diane] I know that you're new at all of this

so let me give you some advice.

Get your priorities straight.

Hi, I'm Jeff Cameron, the associate producer.

You let me worry about Diane.

I know how to deal with these producer types.

You just worry about your show.

You let me handle Karen MacKenzie.

I know how to deal with these instant celebrity types.

You just worry about your end of the show.

I even arranged to meet you so I can find out

what your father knew about Oakman Industries.

Is this supposed to make me feel better about you?

The only thing I want you to know is that I have changed.

I'm the father of those children and I love them.

Now, you and I are gonna have to start talking about this

so we can decide when it is we want to tell them

I'm their father.

Or whether we wanna tell them.

If you think your children don't need a father

you're crazy.

[Val] You're starting to yell again.

[Danny] No, Val, I'm not yelling.

I'm raising my voice.

[yelling] This is yelling.

[theme music continues]

Please join us tomorrow

for a live edition of Open Mike.

[Diane] Why are you watching those old tapes?

...specifically plastic money.

Wanna give me a ride to the station?

Not a good idea.

Ashamed to be seen with me?

I'm prudent.

I wouldn't want my colleagues to be jealous of me.

Did I tell you we have a chance at syndication?

-You're kidding. -Eighteen stations.

Five of them in A markets.

Congratulations.

Congratulate me after the sale and after I get rid of Karen.

What?

Yes. I want her off the show.

[laughs nervously] What are you going to do, fire her?

I would if I could, believe me, but I can't.

The station owner loves her.

Well, she is crucial to the show, don't you think?

There's no such thing as irreplaceable talent.

How are you gonna do it?

Put a little sunshine in your life.

Watch Open Mike. This is stupid.

-[Diane] Stop tape. -[woman #1] Tape is stopped.

We can do without the editorial comment, Karen.

I can do without this topping.

Karen, Karen, Karen.

You know, most people would be happy

that management was willing to spend

so much money promoting their career.

I have no problem with the idea of promoting my show.

The show. Our show.

But I do have a great deal of difficulty

accepting this as the right way to do it.

Excuse me.

I'm sure that we all wish that the content

of this promotion were your decision.

It is my decision not to do it.

You have a contract with this show

and that contract includes

the recording of promotional materials.

Nowhere in my contract does it say

I have to make a fool of myself.

[elevator bell ringing]

[upbeat music playing]

-Caught ya. -What?

I just wanted to catch you

before you got back to your desk.

-Give me the good news. -Good morning, Michael.

-Good morning. -What good news?

You have been assigned

to Michael's design team for the Franklin Project.

-Really? -I kid you not.

-Well, good. -Yeah.

Briefing in the conference room after lunch.

See you there.

[chuckles] Don't have to thank me, Michael.

Carlos, I don't wanna disturb you

but this is important.

You won't be disturbing him, I can assure you.

Just like old times, huh?

[laughs] I hope not.

Why, you old sourpuss.

Well, I don't mean to interrupt anything

but I've got a few questions to ask Greg.

-I'll see you later. -Stick around, Paige.

-Look, I'm not interested-- -What's with Tom Ryan?

-Who? -Tom Ryan.

The pretty little policeman Paige is dating.

-[Mack] Does he work for you? -[Greg] No.

Come on.

I'm telling you, he does not now nor has he ever worked for me.

He was on the take from Oakman.

I wouldn't know that. I've never seen his resume.

Are you satisfied?

But if you want me to plan something, frame him.

I'd be glad to help you out.

I owe Mack. He saved my life.

You're never gonna be satisfied.

Because you know I'm right about Tom.

I know all about Tom.

I probably know more about him than you do.

You know he's on the take?

I know that he has done things that he wishes he hadn't done.

Paige...

-He snowed you. -Mack.

Don't you think people can change?

-What did he tell you? -Everything.

[Mack] What's everything?

Well, I'm not gonna tell you

because you're gonna use it against him.

-You're damn right I will. -Mack.

-He saved your life. -Give me a break.

In Toronto, there was a man who was sent up there

to k*ll you and Tom saved your life.

That's the biggest pile of bull I've ever heard.

And you should be embarrassed to say you believe it.

[Paige] Well, I do believe it.

And what's more, I believe Tom has changed.

I also believe that I am in love with him.

And if you can't accept that, then...

Then to hell with you.

[gentle music playing]

-Wanna give me a ride home? -Paige's apartment?

Yeah.

Why didn't you go with Paige?

Paige isn't a lot of fun to be with right now.

This project is right up my alley, Michael.

I've just seen some new procedures

for customizing programs for the individual user.

I know there's two data banks I can draw on

for the latest information on the prototypes

and I think I have a line on some research

that hasn't even been published yet.

It's real cutting-edge stuff.

You know...

If you could put together even a primitive model

even on paper...

Gosh, although a working system

for a truly user-designed customized interface

would be absolutely incredible.

-God, this is so exciting. -[sighs]

If we can pull this together as well as I know we both can

it would be great.

So do you wanna come over to my place and work

or do you want me to come over to yours

and we get a leg up on the others?

-Forget it, alright? -What?

I'm not going to your apartment and you're not coming to mine.

Well, I was only suggesting--

I know what you're suggesting, Linda

and so do you.

-Just give it up. -Michael...

Look, Linda, we shouldn't even be working together.

I'm asking for a reassignment.

Michael, give me a break.

I'm the new kid on the block. I'm the one with no seniority.

If you go asking for a reassignment

they'll think you're complaining about the quality of my work.

Karen, you can't expect to win every battle.

I don't. Just...

the important things.

Here's your copy.

"Curl up and get cozy with a friend.

Join me on Open Mike and feel right at home."

I want you seated on the couch with the cat on your lap.

-[Karen] A cat? -Yes.

As you're talking, I want you to begin petting the cat.

That is, if you can talk and pet at the same time.

Why don't we let the cat start getting used to you?

No, thank you.

Karen, for your information, our research shows

that there are more cat owners in this country

than there are dog owners

and isn't the whole idea for us to get more viewers?

For your information

I don't care how many cat owners there are

and if I did, I'd worry that this promo was so inane

we didn't sell the cats.

I am not sitting on that set

with that cat saying those lines.

Not now, not ever.

[Diane] If you wanna host this show

you're gonna have to do the promos for it.

It comes with the territory. It's just as simple as that.

[Karen] It is not as simple as that.

I can't pretend to be something I'm not.

[scoffs] Everybody in front of the camera

pretends they're something they're not.

I don't.

[Diane] Are you trying to tell me

that, oh, let's say...

Cameras?

Check focus and hold your shots.

That's done for purely technical reasons

and you know it.

-Roll tape. -Save us from amateurs.

The whole point of my doing the show...

[tense music playing]

The whole reason I was interested

in hosting this show was that I would be me.

That there wouldn't be any pretense.

That what people see when they watch the show

for better or worse, is me.

Not some concoction.

Not some invention of the promotion department.

Let's give a little credit to research, shall we?

And let's not assume that we know everything.

If people are gonna watch this show

they're gonna watch it because they trust me.

They don't have to like me. They have to trust me.

They have to believe I'm honest.

The audience will not watch if I fake it.

They'll know in a minute, and then they'll tune out.

And then there won't be any show.

Not with me on it anyway.

Well, that's a suggestion.

Stop tape. Back into it about 20 seconds.

Give me playback.

[audio squeaking]

If people are gonna watch this show

they're gonna watch it because they trust me.

They don't have to like me. They have to trust me.

Hi, honey. How was your day?

They made me put this thing on my head.

No worse than mine.

Like the rays of the sun or something.

And then they made me say something utterly insipid

like, "Put a little sunshine in your life" or something.

With little golden rays or yellow rays?

-That is not the point. -I guess not.

I think she's trying to get under my skin.

-She wants me to quit. -Who?

Diane, my producer.

She brought in this Victorian furniture

and Mack, she got a cat.

-A cat. -You mean you had a cat owner?

-A cat trainer as a guest? -Just a cat.

What questions did you ask the cat?

The cat wasn't on the show.

The cat was a decoration. A prop.

This woman has no judgment, no taste.

[sighs] A cat?

How was your day?

It was nothing like a cat.

Meg has a rash.

Oh, no. How is she?

-Greg Sumner refuses-- -How is he?

Alive and talking.

-Is he getting better? -I didn't ask.

I wasn't disposed to inquire after his health

after he refused to finger Tom

and Paige will continue to date Tom, the crooked cop.

She thinks she's in love with him

and, I her loving father, can go to hell.

No good news at all, huh?

Anne says hello.

Hi. Has Michael gone home yet?

-I don't think so. -Good.

Tell him the conference has been rescheduled.

We need the proposal tomorrow and not Monday.

-Tomorrow? -[Mort] Before 11:00.

Now, nobody expects you to have the final design

but whatever you kids come up with

should make us look good.

We can wing it if the research is in readable form.

-No problem working tonight? -No.

That's the attitude.

I'll send out for sandwiches, bagels...

Oh, no bagels.

Veggie pizza, maybe, or Thai?

Both.

Linda...

Don't bother, Michael.

You're probably right about us working together.

It really isn't a good idea,

so don't apologize and don't defend yourself.

Well, see you tomorrow.

Goodnight.

Put a little sunshine in your life.

Watch Open Mike.

[Diane laughs]

Oh, I love it. I just love it.

Diane, I want you watch this promo that I made.

Wait till the syndicators get a look

at Mrs. MacKenzie in all her glory.

What if they blame you for that?

Jeff, you and I both know that Karen insisted

on this display of tasteless self promotion.

Watch this.

-Send this. -Please.

-Watch this. -Send this.

[dramatic music playing]

...that the whole reason I was interested in hosting it

was that I could be me.

That there wouldn't be any pretense.

That what people see when they watch the show

for better or worse, is me.

Not some concoction.

Not some invention of the promotion department.

[keys clacking]

[Val] Mommy's home.

[door closes]

Did you get your things moved in?

My side of the closet wasn't big enough

so I put some of my stuff in the garage temporarily.

Would you mind leaving that open?

-I need the air. -Sure.

Where are the kids?

In their room?

-Their slide is missing. -It's in the garage.

Val, would you mind letting me finish this, please?

Sure.

Why?

Because I promised it to a client by tomorrow.

-That's why. -No, no, no, no, no.

Why is there slide in the garage?

[clacks keys] I was trying to work.

They were making much too much noise.

I told them they could do without the slide for a week

and maybe they'd learn to use it quietly.

Danny, kids make noise on slides.

Not when I asked them not to, and not while I'm working.

But that's what slides are for.

Let's just talk to them about it.

I told them they had to stay in their room

at... For another 20 minutes.

You know, Val, we really need

to teach those kids some manners.

You spoil them.

[dramatic music playing]

Danny?

What?

You didn't... hit them, did you?

What?

Well?

No, I didn't.

-Val, what do you think-- -[computer beeping]

Look what you made me do, Val. I've ruined the entire entry.

Damn.

[tense music playing]

They're okay. I read them to sleep.

Ginny, wait.

Were they really that noisy? Were they rude to him? What?

Don't you even think for a minute

that they were anything but normal children.

I-I wanna talk to you, young lady.

I want you to listen to what I have to say

even if you never listen to me again.

You made a mistake marrying that man.

No, no, you are as stubborn as the day is long

and I know you don't want to admit

that you made the mistake, but you just imagine

what might have happened if I hadn't been here

to protect those children.

What do you mean you told your father?

I had to get him off my back.

Paige, when I tell you something in confidence

I don't expect to be quoted.

I admitted that stuff to you, not your father.

Well, then, you should've told me

it was a secret then.

You should've known.

I have a suggestion.

Every time you tell me something that I can repeat

you raise your right hand.

And then every time you tell me something's a secret

you raise your left hand.

Paige, you're not taking me seriously now.

I am.

Now, wait, was that a secret or not?

Stop it. Stop it.

You say that I'm not taking you seriously

but some things you won't admit to

some things you admit, some things you don't.

Secret. Non secret.

What else did you tell your father?

What else?

Ask him.

What do you mean, ask him? You know we're not talking.

Well, that's too bad.

Then you'll never find out that Mack's daughter told him

that she thinks she's in love with a cop.

She only thinks?

She thinks she's in love? She only thinks?

-Is that what you said? -Don't push your luck, pal.

Hi, guys.

Okay, don't forget the seat belts.

-Morning, Gary. -Morning.

-Why are they so cranky? -Well, they're not awake yet.

I'll send along their pajamas and I'll call you later

to see if they wanna spend the night.

Are you sure Danny won't mind?

Have a good time, kids.

Okay, where do you guys wanna go?

Natural History Museum or the duck pond?

-I don't care. -You don't care?

-You don't love us. -Yeah.

I don't love you? I love you as much as I can.

What are you talking about?

Danny said that you don't love us.

He was kidding.

He didn't act like he was kidding.

[chuckles] Yeah, well...

Never can tell about adults.

I just had a bad dream.

I dreamt that Gary came to pick up the kids.

I asked him to.

Oh, see, that was not a part of my dream.

I did it... so that you and I could be alone.

-Alone with your old Aunt Ginny? -No.

I got Aunt Ginny in a motel room for the night.

I thought that this would be relaxing for you.

For both of us.

You're not used to having kids around, I know that.

No. Danny has a problem.

No, I didn't say that.

But?

Well, we've talked about raising kids

but talking about being a parent in the abstract

and living with them day today

are two totally different things.

Particularly when Gary keeps bad mouthing me

to them all the time.

Danny, stop it. He would not do that.

Look.

Let's just waste the day. Just you and me.

We could go to a matinee and...

There's this great new Mexican restaurant

that I love for us to try.

Let's...

Let's just get out of the house.

Come on.

Like old times.

-Yeah, right. Alright. -Come on.

Yeah.

I'll get my jacket.

No, I'll get some money too.

-God, I love you. -Me too.

-I'll be right down. -Okay.

[tense music playing]

[music intensifies]

-Wow. -I agree.

This Linda person is a dynamo.

A prize, a winner.

How'd it go?

It went great and it's all thanks to you.

All finished.

With what?

The design proposal.

We just finished that presentation.

Thanks to Linda, we got the go-ahead

on the R&D.

Already?

Congratulations.

Oh, I'm sure you found a lot of research

I overlooked, Michael.

[Mort] I doubt it.

Are you hanging around for the fundraiser?

I didn't know anything about it.

Yeah, the tree huggers.

He means conservationists. Michael's mother's on the board.

[Danny] I don't know why I should feel defensive

all the time about this. I really don't.

But I don't mean to make you feel defensive.

Look, Val.

This is my perspective.

I want this marriage to work.

I want it to be the best marriage

there ever was.

I'm trying my best.

I've let go of everything that's come before

but you...

I what?

You won't let go of Gary.

I don't know.

Maybe you don't want to. Maybe you can't.

We're not talking about Gary.

His name sure does come up a lot.

But that's because we're talking about the kids.

You still carry around a picture of your ex-wife.

Have you been going through my wallet?

No, of course not. It's just...

I just fell out at home.

It's been in there forever.

I should have gotten rid of it a long time ago.

Okay? Here.

Here.

Okay.

-Who's the other one? -What other one?

That other photo right there.

Right... Right there. That one.

It's my sister.

Sister?

You never told me you had a sister.

We had a falling-out a long time ago.

We haven't spoken since.

I'm sorry.

It happens.

Well, I guess then she doesn't know

about me either.

No, she doesn't.

-Alright. -Val...

Maybe I did overreact with the kids.

I'm sorry.

Tell you what.

Let's rebuild this slide and have it ready for them

when they come home, huh?

Okay?

[Karen] Your tie is crooked.

I hate fundraisers.

I'm on the committee. I have to make an appearance.

We'll stay five, ten minutes.

You always say that and we always stay two hours.

You always say that and you always have a good time.

[elevator bell ringing]

Oh, I think I'm beginning to hate fundraisers, too.

Oh, boy.

Karen MacKenzie.

Oh, Anne Matheson, how are you?

Fine. Look at you.

Ageless. Absolutely ageless.

I swear. What's your secret?

Well, I live a good life.

Well, I guess I'm gonna get old fast then.

-Hi, Karen. -Oh, hi, Paige, Tom.

-Hi. -Mack.

Excuse me.

You're gonna have to tell me the name of your group again

so I can make a contribution.

The West Coast Conservationists.

Excuse me. I'll get my checkbook.

It is tax-deductible, isn't it?

Of course it is, mother.

Your father is never gonna accept me, Paige.

Oh, there are a lot of things my father refuses to accept.

I guess he's just your stereotypical dad

when it comes to know who his daughter dates, huh?

You admitted yourself you're no angel.

Your father wouldn't like me

if I were a millionaire pediatrician

who played for the Lakers.

Oh yes, he would. It doesn't matter, though.

You're sulking.

I'm doing it intentionally,

so no need to try to talk me out of it.

You know, honey... Hi. How are you?

You're treating Tom the same way Anne's father treated you.

Karen, I'm not open to any advice

on the subject of my daughter.

-It's a warning. -Same thing.

The more she thinks you hate him

the more she's gonna want him.

-What? -Hi.

-Hi. -Oh, hi.

Nice turnout.

-Yeah. -Yeah, if you like this crowd.

He's sulking.

So don't even try and talk me out of it.

I see.

Could I ask you a question?

Uh, yeah, excuse us.

Who is this Matheson woman?

Ah, Anne.

[Paula] Yes, Anne.

What is her story?

Well, it's a long one, but the most important part

of it is don't trust her.

Your mother's here.

I just thought you wanna know.

Thanks.

-See you. -See you.

You really blew them away with your research today.

Congratulations.

Thank you.

[music on radio]

Thanks for watching the show.

Do it now.

It's just gonna get harder later.

You want me to walk over there and give Tom a hug

just because he's dating my daughter?

Shake his hand.

-I can't do that. -Talk to him.

-I can't do that. -Look, she's testing you.

She just brought him here as a challenge, sort of.

Well, she wins, sort of.

Think of it, she's the only daughter you've got.

She's as stubborn as you are.

If you don't make peace with him

you're gonna cut her off, not him.

And what would make him happier?

[indistinct chatter]

Champagne?

Thank you.

It wasn't so hard, was it?

Excuse me. I'll be right back.

Cheers.

It's pretty good.

Bubbly.

-Nice talking with you. -Let me tell you something.

Suppose we're gonna stand here and drink this stuff.

Let's look like we're having a good time

and keep in mind I'm doing this for my daughter.

I don't know what you said to Mack

but I owe you one.

I better get back there before they start fighting.

-Okay. -Thank you.

Bye.

-Hi, Mom. -Oh, hi, honey.

-You look tired. -I am tired.

I want you to know, Michael.

Eric and I had a long talk and he doesn't blame you.

I'm very sorry if I ever said--

Michael.

You forgot your watch last night.

Hi, Karen.

Goodnight.

It's not what you think it is. I left my watch in my office.

She works here now.

It's not what you think it is, Mom.

[elevator bell ringing]

See? I knew he'd come around.

Having a drink with your father

is not what I call coming around.

Down?

Yeah.

[Linda croons]

-You got it? -Yeah, I got the end of it...

Yeah, you know, it slides a little bit.

Oh wait-- Oh.

-Go on. -Alright.

I'll be in as soon as I clear this up.

-[laughs] You okay? -[Danny] Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

"All-Star junior quarterback Danny Waleska

threw for a school record of 16 completions."

God.

W, W...

Waleska.

Where, where...

[Val laughs]

"Danny, you're too young to tie the...

tie the knot."

[eerie music playing]

"The parents of Christine Ahearn are pleased to announce

"the engagement of their daughter to...

Danny Waleska.

[Danny] Yo. Cleaned it up?

[music continues]

Well...

-Danny... -What, what? What's the matter?

I don't know. I'm just...

Come on, Val, I thought the point

of being alone was to be alone.

I know that. I'm sorry. I'm just...

Just tired, I guess.

-Sorry. -It's alright.

I understand.

I understand.

Thanks.

[dramatic music playing]

Danny r*ped Amanda.

I'm sorry, Val. I had to tell you.

Danny r*ped me.

You should know that before you marry him.

[music continues]

Face it, Val. That man should be locked up.

He r*ped me, Val. Danny r*ped me.

I've got to speak, I'm gonna yell.

r*pist. r*pist. r*pist. r*pist.

[papers rustling] Here's your lot of paperwork.

-[Val] Mr. Ahearn? -Yes.

Mr. Ahearn, you don't know me. I'm calling you from California.

You having good weather out there?

[Val] Well, yes, as a matter of fact, we are.

Mr. Ahearn, I'm calling to ask you

about your daughter Christine.

I know that she was once engaged to my husband, Danny.

Danny Waleska. And I was wondering--

Is this a prank?

-No. Why? -It's a pretty lousy sick prank.

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry to hear Danny Waleska is still alive, lady,

whoever the hell you are.

He should be in jail after what he did to my daughter.

-Why? What happened? -He beat her.

And... he r*ped her.

The death would be so good for him.

[eerie music playing]

-Hey. -Oh, God.

-You scared me. -Where are you going?

Well, remember that appointment I told you about...

-Your publisher? -Uh-huh.

I thought that was this afternoon.

Well, it was supposed to be

but they wanna meet this morning.

You know, I-I didn't want to wake you.

That's too bad.

I was kind of hoping we could sleep in today. You know?

You know I really I want to, but I-I really gotta go.

-What about your briefcase? -What?

Your briefcase. You haven't even got your purse.

I can't believe it. I forgot it in the hall.

You sure you can't reschedule that appointment?

[nervous chuckle] No, I really can't.

-Bye-bye. -Oh, you can't? Bye.

[engine rumbling]

They want the show and they want you.

-And? -They love Karen.

[sighs] I thought you said you had good news.

Well, this is good news.

What? How could that happen?

Oh, don't tell me they're expecting dreg

like that sunshine tape every week.

They didn't take that seriously.

They never saw the sunshine tape.

My secretary sent the wrong one.

How did that happen?

I-I don't know. I fired the secretary.

Jeff, this is a major screw up of a major opportunity.

[thud, clatter]

[sighs]

The prospect of being tied to that prima donna is too much.

Come on, Diane.

You are the show. Everybody knows that.

[Karen] I do not call

having to work with her good news.

Karen. Karen.

-Don't give up this opportunity. -I'm sorry.

It's just not worth the aggravation.

-Not worth it to whom? -To me.

What about the viewers?

My first obligation is to myself.

You feel obligated to do something worthwhile.

There are a lot of ways a person can make a contribution.

"...but yours is the only interview show I watch.

"You make sense, I feel as if you're asking questions

I would ask."

"Dear Karen, I really admire you.

"I'm glad there's a woman like you on TV

for my daughter to see."

l"Dear Karen, what's different about your show is you.

-I trust you." -Wait a minute, let me see.

"I trust you because you're honest

"and don't let being on television

make you a superstar or something."

They say those kinds of things to everyone on television.

I've been reading fan mail for years.

I've never seen letters like the letters you generate.

There are thousands of people out there who can do my job.

Don't kid yourself, Karen. You are the show.

Everybody knows that.

Karen, I just wanna say congratulations.

I'm looking forward to working with you

for many, many years to come.

Well, I guess it's congratulations to us both.

And the feeling is mutual.

-Mack-- Ooh, I'm sorry, Peggy. -Hi.

-Where's Mack? -He has a prelim.

-Oh. Is Frank... -Ah, class.

Class, huh?

-Could I use your phone with... -Oh, sure, sure.

I have to run these over to the courthouse.

Okay, do you mind if I wait here for now?

-Make yourself at home. -Okay. Thanks a lot.

[telephone dialing tone]

[Gary] Please leave a message after the tone.

Thanks.

-[voicemail tone] -Hi, Gary, it's me.

I need to ask you a big favor.

And the doctor said don't be surprised

if you have mood swings.

[whines]

Oh, Carlos. This is his diet.

"Low protein, low fat."

Carlos, see if we can find something on there

that I can eat.

Very well.

You didn't listen to the doctor's prognosis.

Yes, I did, mother.

Greg, liver damage is irreversible.

It's such a wonderful thing to be talking about.

[Paula] Well, you better take it seriously.

"As liver function decreases, the body becomes toxic."

[hiccups]

"The patient may experience memory loss, kidney failure

the skin may become extremely pruritic."

-[hiccuping] Pruritic? -Itchy.

I knew you weren't paying attention.

[sighs]

Here.

-[doorbell rings] -[Greg coughs] What is this?

Skim milk, sir.

I was thinking more in terms of steak and a potato.

"Nausea and vomiting

"chest pains and palpitations

"enlargement of the heart, swelling of the brain

"dementia...

"susceptibility to blood disorders."

[hiccups] And the best part is that I'm alive, right?

[Anne] I'll drink to that.

[glasses clinking]

[pops bottle cork] You look wonderful.

[laughs] Thank you.

[champagne gurgling]

[champagne gurgling]

Chin-chin.

[clinks glass] Chin-chin.

[clinks glass] Chin-chin.

[Diana] Hi, this is Diana Berricks.

I'm returning your call

regarding the horse tack for sale

and I can be reached anytime after 2:00 p.m.

You have my number and thanks.

[voicemail tone]

[Val] Hi, Gary, it's me.

I got a big favor to ask.

Can you please keep the kids for one more night?

It'd be a big help.

Umm... I'll try to call you later

but if you get this before I call you back

you can reach me at Mack's office.

Bye.

[telephone ringing]

Mack?

[telephone ringing]

-What are you doing here? -What are you doing here?

-I'm here to see Mack. -Mack's your publisher now?

-No, of course not. -[Danny slams telephone]

-Of course not. -You lied to me, Val.

-Why did you lie to me? -I didn't, Danny.

-[shouting] You lied to-- -[Gary] Mack, Gary here.

I was trying to reach Val.

She said she was at your office.

Tell her I called

and I'll try and reach her at the house.

Thanks. Bye.

[eerie music playing]

You tell Gary that you're here

and you can't even tell your own husband?

-No. I-I-- -Shut up.

Why did you lie to me, Val? Why?

I expected it from Amanda. I didn't expect it from you.

Alright, but Danny, you lied to me.

You lied about that other photo.

You told me that that was a photo of your sister.

-Who said it wasn't my sister? -Her father.

I called Christine's father in Ohio.

[music continues]

-Are you spying on me? -No. No, I...

That kind of figures, doesn't it, Val?

You know, you women, you really are all alike, aren't you?

[shouting] I expected you to be different.

You make your promises and then you do

whatever the hell you want.

Please, Danny. Please don't do this.

Please. It doesn't have to be like this.

-We can see a doctor. -We can see a doctor?

Thank you very much.

A deceitful, dependent, neurotic b*tch like you

is going to tell me to go to a doctor?

-I didn't mean-- -[shouting] Thank you very much.

You know everything I told you. You know nothing.

You know squat, do you understand that?

[phone clatters]

I'm the one who's supposed to understand, right?

I'm supposed to understand about the kids?

I'm supposed to understand about Aunt Ginny?

I gotta understand about your ex-boyfriend

showing up at the door every hour

every hour, right, and everything?

And you, you can do whatever the hell you--

[Danny gasps]

[music continues]

[Val pants]

You... b*tch.

[narrator] Next, on Knots Landing...

How in the world can they ever press charges against me?

Val, there were no witnesses.

There's gonna be some way

for me to go back and practice medicine.

It violates our contract with WITSEC.

The man who's after me, he thinks I'm dead.

You will be dead if you do this.

She has set her sights on you.

She doesn't have to have her sights set on me.

What turns you on?

Anything I've never done before.

We're very lucky.

I know. Why don't you stay tonight?

[theme music playing]

[music continues]
