[theme music playing]

[Greg] I propose that you and I move in together.

You mean get married?

Who said anything about marriage?

You've got marriage on the brain.

What do you think I am?

The flavor of the month?

Ow.

What are you doing?

Paige.

Will you marry me?

You want your daughter to marry a crook?

What if she got involved with Greg again?

If you think Gregory Sumner's so awful

what are you doing hanging around him?

I didn't say he wasn't good enough for me.

I said he wasn't good enough for her.

It's, uh, me, Dad. Mary-Frances.

What brings you to this part of the world?

You don't even know one thing about me.

Your mother didn't think I was suitable father material.

Don't give me that.

It's easier for you to send checks

than to see me.

Dad, you raised a kid

exactly how you were raised.

[tense music]

[monitor explodes]

[Robert] I hated k*lling Mary-Frances

but I had to.

Besides, she was dying anyway.

She had camaride poisoning.

Like you do now.

We're getting married!

I love you.

You'll need a copy of the, uh, marriage license.

Do you want me to fax it to you?

Once you have it,

would it be possible to transfer the money

directly into her account?

[male #1 on phone] Certainly. No problem.

Perfect.

I can't give you a marriage certificate

before they're married.

Why not?

Well, for one thing, I don't fill it out

until after the ceremony.

[Anne] Surely you can make an exception.

- Maybe just a blank copy. -[male #2] I don't see why not.

There you go, Paige.

-Everything's in order. -Thank you.

Oh, uh, when can I wire funds to the account?

Oh, the account is open now.

-[tires screeching] -[car clatters]

[tires screeching]

[thudding]

[tires screeching]

He had the accident in a rented car?

Yeah.

His car is fine and dandy.

There's not a scratch on it.

[crash]

-[thuds] -[crashes]

[steady tone]

[doctor] Mr. Williams, she cannot hear us.

I'm sorry. Your wife is clinically dead.

[Julie sobs]

[attorney] Charges have been changed.

Causing bodily injury to vehicular manslaughter.

And they may go for homicide.

Homicide?

Paige, even if I convinced them, I didn't do this.

Something else will turn up.

I can't clear myself until I find out

who it is that's trying to set me up.

Why don't we just relax and enjoy ourselves?

-We can't go back. -So let's go forward.

"You have a black heart,

"and I will rip your black heart from your decaying body."

-My love always." -[Karen groans]

You were right about Diane. I was wrong.

-All the evidence was positive. -Oh, my...

-That... Hi, Mack. How are you? -Hi. Hi.

[Jeff] That-that was beef blood in her apartment.

The duplicate key matched your old locks.

A-A scarf like the one you got

was purchased with her credit card

and the last letter was typed on her typewriter.

-Thanks, Jeff. Thank you. -Sure.

Thank you. It's over.

-Hi. -Hi.

-Hi. Hi. You look nice. -Thank you.

-I'll go on ahead. -Okay.

She was not invited.

-I invited her. -What are you trying to tell me?

I'm gonna marry her.

If you disappear before this corny little ceremony,

I'll get the charges dropped against you.

If you decide to stick around for the festivities

well, it's up to you.

You can be a single free man...

or you can be a married convict.

-We're ready to begin. -Good.

But we cannot find the groom.

[Karen] Tom's missing?

Central Bank, please. I'm in a hurry.

Why isn't life simpler?

[fax machine beeping]

[fax machine beeping]

Booey.

[fax machine dialing]

Uh, stop that.

[fax steady tone]

Thanks.

Did that come through clearly?

Good.

Well, you have the marriage certificate

and her bank account number.

When can she expect to have the money wired to her?

She's gonna be so surprised

when she gets home from her honeymoon.

He didn't even pack a suitcase.

All of his clothes are here, and his CDs, and his stuff.

All of his stuff is here.

It's yesterday's mail.

And bills, you see?

You see? He didn't plan to leave, Mack.

[sighs]

Something must have happened to him.

He wouldn't do this to me. He loves me.

He just wouldn't have done this.

Someone... Someone...

Someone must have forced him to leave.

[sighs] Someone...

Who knows who...

Someone must have hurt him.

[pants] Maybe he's dead.

[sobs]

The threat of unemployment is a red herring and you know it.

Protecting the environment does not mean

a net loss of jobs.

It means different jobs.

And I want my children and yours

to inherit this planet in good condition.

[audio squeaking]

...and I want my children and yours.

to inherit this planet in good condition.

[audio squeaking]

[menacing music]

[door closes]

[screams]

-W-what is it? -Oh!

What is it?

-I'm used to the dark here. -Oh, my goodness

You scared the wits out of me. What are you doing here?

I had some work to finish up. What are you doing here?

-I was just leaving. -Just leaving?

Let me buy a cup of coffee.

Sure.

You didn't like the potatoes?

That's certainly not as good as your mom's.

That's for sure.

[chuckles] It's really great.

Everybody set over all this food, though.

Wouldn't they?

[dramatic music]

We'll use Mom's recipe.

When we finish all this

[chuckles] we'll fix potatoes, Mom's way.

Have you thought about what you wanted to say

at the funeral?

You don't have to say anything. I...

I just thought maybe you'd wanna say something.

Maybe even sing a song.

Sorry about your neighbor.

Her daughter's 15 years old.

Can you imagine losing your mother at fifteen?

I was... I was twelve.

-I'm sorry. -Oh, no, no, no.

That's that's not why I said it.

-I had no idea. -Really. I-it's really Okay.

It's alright.

Well, let's do something about it.

Let's do a show on drunk driving.

We... well, we could talk to a victim.

And the relative of a victim.

And maybe even somebody convicted of drunk driving.

[sighs]

Well, you can...

You can turn me right around.

Take my discouragement and turn it into energy.

I can't imagine surviving last year without you.

Jeff...

No, you don't have to say anything.

But I-I do.

D-did I m-misread something here?

Am I off base thinking that you like me?

I do like you.

[chuckles]

I-I-I... I'm-I'm sorry. I-I-I feel terrible.

Don't feel terrible. I think you're very attractive.

You're a very attractive man.

Now, pl-please, don't feel obligated

to say something nice, okay?

I don't.

Listen.

I'm flattered that you think I'm attractive, believe me.

I'm flattered and under different circumstances...

But I'm married, you know, and I love my husband.

I... Look.

I'd-I'd really appreciate it if you don't mention this

to anybody, okay?

Okay.

Even to Mack.

Okay.

I...

Umm...

I'll just...

-I'll see you tomorrow. -Yeah. Yeah.

This little event never even happened, right?

-Right. -Right.

Goodnight.

[Karen] Bye.

[menacing music]

It's late.

I know it's late.

That wasn't my question.

What was your question?

Well...

-[chuckles] Well, what? -[chuckles]

You know very well what.

[gentle music]

Will you marry me?

I don't want us to make a mistake again.

Third time's charm.

I haven't said no.

You haven't said yes.

Maybe.

Say yes.

Maybe I will.

When?

[doorbell ringing]

-[Gary chuckles] -[Val sighs]

Hi, Val.

Please, Val, I'm not here to hurt anybody.

Sorry I rang your bell so late

but my keys don't work in your new locks.

-What are you doing here? -I just came to get my things.

-I'm calling the police. -Please let me go.

-Why? -Wait a minute.

-Why are we even talking? -The accident wasn't my fault.

-The brakes were faulty. -You got lucky.

I got justice. Temporal justice.

Anyway, if you just find it in your heart--

-To what, forgive you? -Forget it.

Not to forgive me, Val.

Just listen to me. Just for a minute, please.

The experience of jail was good for me.

Too good for you.

Judge not, lest ye be judged. Isn't that how it goes?

-What? -Look, Gary.

I know this is difficult for you to hear

and even more difficult for you to accept.

I don't blame you for hating me. I really don't.

I know what hate can be.

In jail, I was filled with hate.

Amongst all those outcasts, I actually felt wronged.

I felt self-righteous-- -Wronged? How could you--

God put me in jail.

He put me there because he...

He wanted me to realize that I had made myself

an outcast from him.

You are the most cynical, hypocritical--

I don't expect you to believe me, Val.

I've been such a lowlife and my sins have been so hateful

that you have no reason to believe me.

I accept that. I forgive your doubt.

But if you just examine your conscience--

You know...

I should have finished you off with that bat when I had--

But you didn't. Don't you realize you didn't?

Isn't it obvious that a higher power

stayed your hand?

Why? I don't know why, but...

I believe that I'm alive for a purpose

and I have to find God's will for me.

And if you won't examine your conscience for yourselves

honestly, truly

you'll both discover the same things about yourself.

I'm deeply sorry for any pain I've caused anyone of you.

-About my things. -[sighs] Oh.

I don't want him setting foot in his house.

There are only material possessions.

I'll call back when you've had time to reflect.

I'll pray for you both.

[scoffs]

[menacing music]

[doctor] I wish the report had been positive, Greg

but you asked me not to keep anything from you

and I haven't.

Well, this kind of news is bad for business, so...

let's keep it under our hats, eh?

Is there a back way out of here?

Sure. I'll show you.

"Informed sources report that industrialist Greg Sumner

may be suffering from a terminal liver condition."

"The spokesman for Mr. Sumner has categorically denied

"that the ex-senator is in ill health

"claiming he is, and I quote

'healthy as sin.'"

Good morning, Mr. Sumner.

-[Bob] Good morning, Mr. Sumner. -Good morning, boys and girls.

[employee] Mr. Sumner.

[tense music]

[elevator bell ringing]

Linda. Michael. You gotta hear this.

You guys gotta hear this.

"Reporters have seen a copy of a CAT scan

purported to be that taken of Mr. Sumner.

And?

"Medical experts who have seen the copy

"said that the liver scanned exhibits extensive damage

consistent with toxic chemical poisoning."

Mr. Indestructible is destructing.

I can't believe someone would release that information.

Somebody was paid a bundle grande dinero.

Well, who's gonna run the company?

Who's gonna own the company?

Isn't anybody worried about his health?

-Of course we are, Michael. -Of course we are, Michael.

"Mr. Sumner was exposed

to an undetermined dosage of a pesticide..."

"...manufactured by his own corporation.

"Hospital authorities had no comment

"on Mr. Sumner's condition

"saying it was non-hospital policy to discuss

or disclose information without a patient's consent."

Meanwhile, someone leaks the information.

-You think it's true? -[Karen sighs]

-I'm hungry. -You are?

Well, then let's go and eat some more.

You're getting heavy, kid.

"Report, if true..."

"...leaves many questions unanswered

"including the status of the man convicted of the poisoning

"who may be charged with m*rder

"in the event of Mr. Sumner's death.

"And who will inherit the mantle of CEO

"and ownership of the manufacturing

"research development, and investment industries

owned by the Sumner Group?"

Here. Read it yourself.

Hey, Frank, why don't you go home?

I'll find out where Danny's staying.

You haven't found him yet, now, have you?

-Hello? -No, I'm still here.

Yeah, I need a listing for Danny Waleska.

W-A-L-E-S-K-A.

There might be a new listing. Could be under Daniel.

His old landlord hasn't heard from him.

No D. Waleska? D, like "dummy."

[grunts]

Are you sure you don't wanna go home?

If I wanted to go home, I would go home now, wouldn't I?

If my daughter saw me doing this, she...

J-just give me a minute, please.

[sighs]

Operator, I need a new listing

for Danny Waleska.

-W-A-L-- -Were you looking for me?

I just wanted to give you one last warning.

Stay out of my neighborhood.

I have no intention of being in your neighborhood.

Oh, no. You were there. I saw you.

I was just picking up some of my things, that's all.

Next time, let someone else collect them.

Is that really fair, Frank?

-A prodigal son was met-- -What?

Don't read me Bible stories.

I don't care if you met God face to face

and he gave you the exact date of the second coming.

I still want you out of my neighborhood.

If you came here for something specific

maybe I can help you, Mr. Waleska.

I'm afraid I need some information from Frank.

Why don't you phone later this afternoon

and I'm sure I can figure something out?

Maybe that's a good idea. I will be phoning.

I'm gonna need Frank's insurance company

and his policy number.

-What? -Well, don't worry, Frank.

I forgive you for destroying my car.

I have absolutely no intention of suing you.

That's between you and God.

I'm just gonna let the insurance company handle it

and I'll accept whatever they feel is just.

Please get out.

I'm using the last bit of strength that I have

to keep from doing something that I know I will regret.

Find your strength in God, Frank.

[sighs]

[sighs] I just feel so self-conscious.

-Let's just reverse snobbery. -Oh no. I...

This way you won't worry about Meg.

We'll be able to stay in touch with Mack in any time

and when we're sh**ting on location

you can call home.

I want you to return to work with confidence.

[sighs] Hello?

[chuckling] Hi. It's Mommy.

I'm just calling to tell you that I'm on my way home.

Oh, okay.

I love you too, honey.

Bye.

And the good news is the company is paying for it.

-Oh, well, in that case... -Right.

[beeps cellphone] Just press "end" and "clear"

and...

-Here's one for Mack's car. -Oh, well, I...

I don't think Mack's gonna like the idea of a car phone.

A car phone? A car phone?

A car phone.

I can't have a car phone.

Well, how many times have you been

on your way to court and you forget a file

and you have to stop to call Peggy or something?

It's not that I wouldn't use it. I'd use it every day.

It's an image thing we're talking about here.

There are guys who use car phones

and there are guys who talk

about the guys who use car phones.

I'm one of the guys who make fun

of one of the guys using the car phone. Can't have it.

-Please change your image. -They can't.

Well, if you don't do it for yourself

then do it for Megan, for me, because if you don't have one

I'm just not gonna feel safe.

-That's not fair. -Why isn't it fair?

Because you know I can't say, "I don't want you to feel safe."

Yes.

I do.

I promised Val I'd be right there.

-What is that? -An expensive toy?

My daddy has one of those.

-Can I play with it? -I don't--

Oh, I forgot to tell you. The company's paying for it.

-Wanna use the phone, pumpkin? -Yeah.

Let's have some fun. Let's use the one in Mom's car.

Let's call Australia.

-Australia? -Yeah.

-Why didn't you tell me? -I haven't had the chance.

-Have you set a date? -No.

I mean, I haven't even said yes.

-Why not? -Well, you know.

I don't wanna think I'm easy.

Hey, come on. Are you worried?

No, I'm not worried.

Well, yeah, I am worried.

Karen.

You know how to pick a husband.

I mean, Mack is everybody's dream husband.

My record in the husband picking department

is not all that good.

But this is Gary we're talking about here.

As in, I hope Gary and Val get back together again.

People still say that?

Only at the mention of your name or his.

Yeah, well, that's part of what worries me.

-What people are saying? -No.

The again part, the fact that it is Gary.

I mean, it's a man that I've married twice already.

Third time's a charm?

That's what he said.

But Karen, do you know anybody

who's married the same man three times?

Are you trying to talk to yourself out of that?

No.

Are you waiting

for someone else to talk you out?

No, I just wanna make absolutely certain

that there's no reason not to marry him.

-And so far? -[telephone ringing]

So far, I haven't thought of any...

-Hello? -Hi, Val.

That voice makes my skin crawl.

-Danny? -Yeah.

[telephone ringing]

[Val] Hi, leave a message at the beep

and we'll get right back to you.

Thanks.

Let the machine get it.

[voicemail beeps]

[Danny] Val, it's alright not to talk to me

so don't feel guilty and don't think I blame you.

I just wanted you to know that I'm okay

in case you're worried about me.

I need the boxes that I left in your garage.

You could leave them outside and I could come pick them up

and not even go in the house.

Thanks, Val.

And God bless.

I've missed you.

I got the cereal you liked.

I had to go to three stores, but I finally found it.

You shouldn't have gone to all that trouble.

You deserve something special after all that prison food.

-Kimmy, I'm not worthy of you. -I'm not important.

You should strive to be worthy of the Lord.

Amen.

What I just meant was that...

Well...

God used you to reach me.

God wanted me to be in that prison.

He sent you to make me realize

that I had made myself an outcast from him.

You see, he used you to get to me.

I don't know how I'm ever gonna thank you

for what you've done for me.

It was not me.

It was the spirit working through me.

[door rattles]

Honey. I'm home.

Oh, my.

Oh my, oh my, oh my.

Shut up, mother.

I've never talked to you about men, have I?

Men are jerks.

I hate to have to say it, but it's true.

[sighs]

There... there's something unusual about them.

They never grow up.

I mean, their-their bodies get big, God knows,

but in their heads, they always stay babies.

Fraidy cats really.

Afraid their hair will fall out.

Afraid their credit cards won't clear.

Afraid their cars won't start.

But really afraid of the big R-word, responsibility.

I like men. I really do. I'm no militant.

I've just never found men to be as smart as women.

You know, I have never been married

in a dress that I couldn't use for another occasion.

What's the point?

Never works out.

Listen, I can help you get a refund on your dress

if you want.

You didn't spill anything on it, did you?

Good morning, Mr. Sumner.

Lithuanians have had a thorough briefing

on your interest in investing in

and retooling the Vilnius factory.

You mean there's something left in Lithuania

that the Russians didn't sell to the Japanese?

Quit the joke about the Russians

and these people, sir.

Through 50 years of occupation

it's sort of the sense of the subject.

You're cramping my style.

Now, the man on the left is the interpreter.

The other two are factory managers

and they're eager for a big dose of American...

[dialogue fades out]

[eerie music]

Unbelievable.

He never would have done this to me unless...

Unless something happened to him.

Cold feet.

Maybe he was k*lled.

Honey, the long and short of it is that men get cold feet.

[sighs]

If it makes you feel better to think he's dead

go ahead.

Believe he was dragged from the church in chains.

Thrown in a dungeon, starved to death.

Entertain yourself with a nice little story

about how he would've married you if he could have.

Paige, I'm your mother.

I love you.

Oh, God.

I wish we'd had this little chat before now.

But if you need a fairy tale

you just go right ahead and make one up.

But remember.

There's a difference between men and women.

And I know it's fashionable to pretend there's not

but there is.

Women are women.

And men are jerks.

Danny, look.

Hi, Mommy. Did you think I was Danny?

No, honey.

Why are you calling, pumpkin?

We're testing your new car phone.

[Meg] It works good.

[Karen] Yes. Is Daddy there with you?

[Meg] Yes. Do you wanna talk to him?

[Karen] No. I was just checking.

[Meg] Bobby wants to call Australia.

[Karen] Who does he know in Australia?

[Meg] Bobby, Mommy wants to know who you know in Australia.

[menacing music]

-[telephone ringing] -[explodes]

[telephone ringing]

-Good morning. -[Greg] Anne.

Good morning. Is your lovely daughter there?

Should I feel slighted when a man asks

for my daughter instead of for me?

Depends on a man's intentions.

How outright.

My daughter is indisposed at present.

Well, listen, when you run into her again

will you tell her I called?

Yes, of course.

Tell her I called seven or eight times

so she'll feel some urgency.

I'd be happy to oblige, Greg.

-Good day. -See ya.

[tense music]

Was that the phone?

Mack called.

He wanted me to tell you

that Tom cleared out his bank account

and that the charges against him are still pending

and that there's no evidence

that he's been hurt or kidnapped

or anything else you might have imagined.

So you can go back to bed.

[music continues]

[honks car horn]

[telephone ringing]

[Paige] Mother.

-[telephone ringing] -[Paige] Mother.

[telephone ringing]

[Paige] Please leave a message at the tone.

[Greg] Still in hiding?

How long are you gonna hold up in that apartment?

You know, Paige

my mother once told me something

and every word is true.

Don't waste your time on a fellow

who doesn't love you.

They'll only mislead you.

Only grieve you.

Don't worry about him. Let him go.

Do without him because...

[chuckles]

Are you sure that you're comfortable there?

Well, I'd be more comfortable upstairs.

-We're not married yet. -Does that mean we will be?

Would you stop now? Don't...

Thanks for staying here with us.

No.

I do feel a lot safer with you here in the house.

Imagine how much safer you'd feel

if I were in your bed.

Gary, I happen to know that's not true.

[Gary and Val laugh]

-Now, goodnight. -Wait a minute.

-What? -No goodnight kiss?

I wish for a kiss.

[eerie music]

Gary...

-Goodnight. -[chuckling] Goodnight.

You can't believe everything you read in the newspapers.

You mean you're not dying?

Everybody's dying.

It's part three of "you're born, you live and you die."

Well, when I read those awful things

about your health

it made me seriously consider my own life.

And I've got to tell you that I doubt

that I could live with my conscience if you died

without ever having slept with me.

[laughs]

Well, I don't wanna be a burden on your conscience.

Oh, Greg, someone put apple juice

in the Scotch decanter.

-Miss Matheson, sir. -Mother.

Daughter.

-Well, what are you doing here? -She's easing her conscience.

[laughs]

You are a devil.

Carlos, somebody put apple juice in the Scotch decanter.

Would you please get Anne some Scotch?

Yes, sir.

Well, I heard about your health.

Ah, another new sound.

-Greg, I'm so sorry. -You're here to commiserate?

How sweet.

That's what I'm here to do, too.

Yeah, I could get into a little commiseration.

The only thing is, he claims he's not dying

any faster than the rest of us.

You mean you're not sick?

Wait a minute. Let me get something straight.

If I'm dying, I could get lucky here tonight

if I'm not dying, I'm gonna be unlucky?

-Well... -No, I'm dying.

I'm definitely dying.

You are a devil.

So which one gets to sleep with the dying man?

You look like you'd use a little rest, darling.

It has been a rough couple of days.

Mother and I were just leaving.

-We were? -Yes. His attitude is offensive.

-Well, I'm not offended. -Well, I'm offended for you.

Let's go.

Goodbye, Greg.

Sometimes I wonder if she's my daughter.

You may both live to regret this.

[Greg] Who knows who else is out there

reading about my impending demise?

Someone eager to commiserate?

-Vultures, circling. -Are you drunk?

bingo, you're here to help with the funeral arrangement.

-What are you talking about? -You heard the news.

but even you can't really presume

that I'm here because of you.

Not everybody has an ulterior motive.

Everybody in our family always did.

I'm here with my daughter.

We came to interview college tennis coaches.

We didn't plan to see you and I know

you didn't wanna see us.

And, Greg,

I won't submit my daughter to your trademark verbal abuse.

I'll make excuses for not seeing you

as I've made excuses all these years.

-Mom, are we having dessert? -No, sweetheart.

This is your uncle Greg. Greg, this is Katie.

[eerie music]

Hi.

Hi.

Thank you so much for coming.

Thank you.

It was a beautiful service, Frank.

-She was a beautiful woman. -She was.

-Julie, sweetheart... -Danny's here.

[menacing music]

Michael.

Michael, take the kids out back, would you?

Yeah, sure. Okay, guys.

What do you say we go feed the rabbits?

-[Bobby] Yeah. -[Michael] Okay, let's go.

Come on, you first.

It's a beautiful day.

Let us be glad and rejoice in it.

You don't think anybody believes this act, do you?

-My conscience is clear. -What conscience?

"But he who is without sin, cast the first stone."

[music continues]

He was supposed to pick up his things yesterday.

Can you believe that S.O.B. showing up at a time like this?

Look, I've gotta go. I'll be late.

Gotta pick Jeff up.

And if the affiliates meeting goes well

I'll be back tonight, but late, I'm afraid.

About 11:00.

Take it easy, superstar.

Look, for Julie's sake, don't start anything.

Just let him leave.

Trust me.

[car engine starts]

Thanks for leaving this stuff out for me, Val.

What?

I also left four books upstairs. Would you mind?

Come to the kitchen, Julie.

He'll go away. Don't let him upset you.

Don't touch me, Danny.

I wanna rescue our marriage, Val.

-I know God wants-- -What do you know about God?

God wants us to save our marriage.

There is no marriage, Danny.

Well, God has joined together, Val.

I am marrying Gary.

Ours is a covenant relationship, Val.

Our marriage is blessed by God.

Get out of here.

Now.

[menacing music]

[slams car trunk]

God does not sanction divorce.

I will not disobey him

and I will not let you disobey him.

I don't want him near us.

And I don't wanna go to jail for k*lling him.

Let's move to Texas.

[music continues]

I'm going to call Mommy.

Do you know her car phone number?

-Of course. -Good.

[cellphone beeping]

Very good. Press...

[beeps cellphone] Good.

No answer.

Well, let's turn it off

and let's try Jeff's apartment.

So you dial five, five, five

seven, two, two, one.

And send it. Beep.

[music continues]

[telephone ringing]

[building explodes]

-[bell ringing] -[fire crackling]

No answer.
