[screeches]

And one and two--

[suspenseful music]

[sighs]

[phone rings]

Hello?

When did you start working half days?

I had to leave early.

I got a call from my mother.

Your mother?

Have you been a naughty girl?

[chuckles] She's coming to visit.

[Greg] Tonight?

Well, she's always surprising me.

[Greg] How long is she staying?

Oh, it's hard to tell with mom.

Uhm, I don't think I'll make it over tonight.

Well, I keep a light burning just in case.

Okay. Thanks.

-Bye. -Bye.

[kid #1] Sorry, lady.

[birds chirping]

Police!

Police!

Somebody stole my purse.

Where were you, ma'am?

I'll show you.

Over here.

And did you see who took it, ma'am?

No.

-When was it stolen, ma'am? -I don't know.

I was sleeping.

Aha.

"Aha" what?

Are you sure you had a purse, ma'am?

Yes, I'm sure I had a purse,

with my money and my makeup.

Is that yours?

I know, I should've put my makeup in my suitcase.

Can I ask you some ID, please, ma'am?

I told you they stole my purse.

And what is your address?

What does that have to do with anything?

Alright. Better get moving.

-Come on. -Well...

Aren't you going to do something about it?

Lady, if you want to file a report down the department,

be my guest.

Come on. Just go.

Just the usual.

-Well, where is Mr. Johnston? -I'm sure he'll show up.

Have you called the police?

Oh, well, that's a little extreme.

Besides, the police won't do anything

until a person has been missing for at least 24 hours.

The City Council is split right down the middle

on the Richfield development.

Johnston has got to convince them

that the Mayfield building has historical merit.

I'll be there to present the case.

You're not an architect.

Well, I know, but I have the documentation,

and I know the pitch.

Ah! This is a disaster.

The vote is today.

Trust me, Mrs. Richfield,

I will work every bit as hard as Mr. Johnston.

I will not let your building be condemned.

[tense music playing]

[suspenseful music]

I know I should be upset.

I know I should feel crummy and lousy.

But I'm kind of... happy.

You're happy your mother lied to you?

Mother lied to a lot of people. I'm glad I found out.

It's a rough thing to be happy about.

My mother has had complete control of my life,

and I didn't even realize it.

It's like I've been in prison all these years,

without even knowing it.

Bad metaphor, Kate.

Yeah, yeah, you're right. I'm sorry.

Let me tell you a little about prison.

The food's bad,

the career opportunities are limited,

and the social life stinks.

Those are the good parts.

Guys in there cut you for a pack of cigarettes.

Nobody smiles at you.

If they do, you worry.

It's the loneliest,

ugliest rat hole in the face of the Earth.

I can never go back there, I mean,

I'd never make it.

Well, we're both free now.

So what are you going to do now that you're free?

I don't know. I'll find my own place, I guess.

You like my apartment?

I love it.

It's yours.

What do you mean, roommates?

No,

I'm, I'm going back up north,

for a while at least.

Well, why are you leaving?

I've been a lot of things in my life.

I've been abandoned,

impoverished, accused, arrested,

ignored and rejected.

I never thought I'd be subsidized.

A quarter of $1,000,000? How could you do that?

It's not the amount, it's the thought that counts.

You are out of your mind.

What do I have to lose?

He's an ex-con, for God's sake.

You're not going to see him or the money again.

Well, then we'll be rid of him.

If that was your goal, you could have just fired him.

So, why don't you give Kate a quarter of a million,

since you've been so generous, huh?

Nah, she'd never accept it.

Be creative. Put it in a trust.

That's not creative. That's predictable.

Besides, giving it to Steve is more fun.

Maybe he'll do something worthwhile.

And if he does?

Then it will give him something else to do.

Ha.

Well, that's wonderful.

Yes, after he rebuilds the Great Northwest,

What then? Huh? Oh, I know.

He plugs up the hole in the ozone, right?

Maybe.

Maybe I'll just let him hang around here.

In the Sumner Group?

Who else am I going to be a mentor to?

Katie's not interested.

Well, can we see him tomorrow?

Alright. Alright. Thank you very much. Bye.

Well?

Well, he downgraded Paul from critical to serious.

So does that mean he's getting better?

Well, it's, you know, better than critical.

We have to say something, Julie.

No, we don't.

Look, we saw what happened.

We cannot say anything.

The police have to know, Julie.

You're gonna tell me you trust the police?

No, I trust Mack.

You can't say anything, not even to Mack.

What about Paul? I mean, you didn't see he stabbed him?

Yeah, but you don't know what this involves, okay?

-What? -Look, you don't.

What?

My name isn't Julie, it's Janelle.

And my dad's name isn't Frank Williams.

It's Jerry Sollars.

We had to change our names and move away from our home

because my mom saw what happened

and thought she had to say something.

She wasn't a criminal. She was a good guy.

But we had to go into the witness protection program

and run for our lives.

Everything got messed up because of that.

My mom would still be alive if we hadn't moved here.

So don't tell me that we have to get involved.

[suspenseful music playing]

Hello?

Hello?

[suspenseful music continues]

Oh, sorry, I'll come back later.

No, I was just leaving.

Pardon, is Mr. Johnston back?

I don't know.

-Hi. -Hi.

Has Greg talked to you about Steve?

Yeah. Surprising, huh?

Surprising? I think it's crazy.

Oh, I don't think so.

$250,000 to somebody Greg barely knows?

It's not that much money to him.

Well, no, no, no.

It's not the money that I am worried about.

It's, it's Greg.

Why?

Well, he's investing so much hope in Steve.

It's as if Greg looks at Steve,

sees himself at 27, and this is...

I don't know, a second chance for him to do good.

I bet you're right. But he would never admit it.

Oh! No, not in many years.

But you see, that's why I'm so worried. I...

I don't think Steve will be able to pull this off.

Don't be so sure.

He's a good guy, he's a hard worker,

he's smart, and he's sincere.

You think he could succeed?

Yeah, I do.

Well, you know him better than I do.

Trust me, he'll come up with aces.

And besides, with Greg behind him,

I wouldn't be surprised

if he ended up running the company.

Here's to hoping.

I'm just trying to get used to you as a Janelle.

I mean, you don't look like a Janelle.

You're a Julie, definitely a Julie.

Okay, I don't know, it's...

What?

[rock music]

Let's go back.

Stay calm and get ready to run.

Well, what are you two

doing on such a pretty day?

Nothing.

Are you sure you're not

going to the police station?

Why would we be?

I heard there was a police detective asking around

about the party the other night.

-So? -So.

What are you gonna say when they talk to you?

We're not gonna say anything.

Huh, is that right?

Hey, I don't like cops.

Neither do I.

I guess we have a lot in common.

Yeah, I guess so.

With so much in common,

maybe you'd like to join us?

Yeah, well. Yeah, I'll think about it.

Well, we'll give you 30 seconds,

and then we're all gonna do something fun, you know?

So, if you do decide to turn us in,

we got something on you too.

Run!

Run!

[indistinct struggle]

[Jason] Keep going!

[indistinct struggle]

-[Jason] Alright! -Now you're in for it, man.

Yeah, what are you going to do now, Jason?

Huh?

-Dad. -Uhm?

Dad, the guys that went to the party.

-Jason is in trouble! -What? Where?

Prospect and Franklin. One of them tried to grab me.

-And Jason tried to stop him. -Grab you?

-Yes. -I'll call the police.

Daddy, what are you going to do?

I'll get Mack. Call the police and stay put.

Here is your initiation.

We need some cash,

and you're going to get it for us.

Don't worry, it's not real.

But the goof in the store won't know that.

We'll be behind you the whole time.

If you screw up, it's gonna hurt.

[Jason] Let's get it over with.

[grunts]

You are dead meat, Lochner!

Did Jason tell you about this g*ng problem?

No.

-Julie? -No.

They couldn't have gone very far.

-So which way? Which way? -Try left.

[Frank] There you go.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

It's them, it's them, it's them.

This way, right.

[car tires screeching]

[Frank] Try to cut them off!

[g*ng member #1] After him! Go! Go!

[car tires screeching]

You got a problem, kid?

[Frank grunts]

[indistinct grunting]

[Mack] Alright.

[Jason screams]

[indistinct grunting]

[Frank] That's it, stay down, kid! I said, stay down.

You are down, man! You are down!

Don't move!

Do not move!

[Mack] Frank!

[grunts]

[Frank] Watch it, Mack! Watch it!

[suspenseful music]

[police sirens wailing]

[police brakes screeching]

Get to the ground! Get down!

[indistinct shouting]

[indistinct shouting]

You okay, Jason?

Yeah, I'm okay.

-Are you alright? -Yeah, I'm fine.

I would have been dead meat if you hadn't come along.

Thank you.

Thanks for taking care of my kid.

Isn't anybody going to thank me?

I'm the one who drove.

Thanks, Mack.

[Brian] Blonde hair.

Your luscious lips.

Your soft neck.

[Paige] This isn't business.

[Brian] Let's skip the rest of the business.

Way to go, Brian.

I thought you said she was boring.

[rewind squealing]

[Paige] What, it's recording?

Turn it off.

[Brian] Are you sure?

[Paige] Yeah, turn it off.

I'll show you something exciting.

[Brian] You're the boss.

My, aren't we modest?

Where the hell is it?

[melancholic music]

Hi, hun.

Hi, where have you been?

Where have you been?

[Paige] Well, I tried calling you back,

but your phone was disconnected.

[phone beeps]

Wish mine were. Please hold my calls.

[woman] Yes, Ms. Matheson.

So what, did you move, or...?

[phone beeps]

Please hold my calls.

The councilman Brenor, he says you have a meeting.

I'm on my way.

Paige.

I''ve got to go. I'm late.

Leave your number. I'll call you.

But we haven't even--

Wait. I'll go with you.

Hey, don't you have a meeting?

I know, I know.

Hey, didn't you used to work for my foundation?

You know, Claudia shouldn't have let me go.

I was an asset.

You know, I've been losing a lot of assets lately.

Some artwork took off the other day.

Where's your boyfriend?

He's gone.

That's convenient.

You got to give him credit, though.

For what?

For knowing when to quit.

You could take a lesson from him.

[elevator dings]

[melancholic music playing]

[suspenseful music playing]

[crickets chirping]

-[Gary] Hey. -What?

-What is this? -What does it look like?

It's a present.

I know it's a present.

Why?

Well, I thought I should do something to,

you know, celebrate the marriage.

Why, I didn't get you anything.

It's okay.

Are you gonna open it?

Yeah.

Why did you do this?

Ah!

A bowl!

-Yes. -Ah...

Another one.

I don't know, I thought we were beyond,

yow know, the romantic gifts.

I mean, how many silver candlesticks can you use?

And besides, I think a practical gift

is more romantic anyway,

because it's something you can use in your everyday life.

Our kids can use these.

[bowls clattering]

-Keep going. -Okay.

-A set. -Yep.

I think there's another one.

-No, I don't think so. -Yeah.

[romantic music playing]

-Gary... -So, I'm romantic after all.

[gasps] Gary...

Oh...

Give me your finger.

[Gary sighs]

Oh, Gary, it's just so...

It's just so beautiful.

It's all too good to be true.

How do you feel right now?

I feel wonderful.

And that's all that matters.

Stay out of the future.

All we have is right now.

That's all anybody has.

Well, right now,

I am happier than I've ever been

in my whole life.

[Gary chuckles]

-[Val] I love you. -[Gary] Oh, I love you.

Yeah, yeah, I remember this guy, officer.

Ordinarily a guy like that, non-regular customer,

I wouldn't remember him.

But he had this beautiful blonde with him.

When they started kissing,

I could think that life is not fair, you know.

Mr. Johnston's eaten here several times.

Last night he tipped me $20

to give him the noisiest table in the place.

Now, after I saw his dinner companion,

I understood.

Beautiful woman, blonde, about this tall,

very sophisticated, very fashionable,

and a white suit on.

Real stand out.

Noisiest table. He knew what he was doing.

Dinner was served in his room.

[suspenseful music]

I noticed him the first day we arrived.

He had the room next to us.

Anyway, last night

the wife and I were coming out from dinner,

and he got on the elevator with us.

He was with this knockout blonde.

Ten plus.

They went into his room.

We went into ours.

I don't know what happened, officer,

but about an hour and a half later

they had this terrific argument.

I couldn't hear what was being said.

But I caught the tone.

That woman was angry.

Excuse me.

Taxi, please.

No, sir, not last night.

I saw the woman this morning.

She was blonde,

pretty, about five foot four,

and she had on a white suit.

I was surprised because the manager said

that everyone was looking for Mr. Johnston,

but no one had been in the room.

She had a room entry card.

The desk clerk said he didn't give it to her.

He never even saw her.

Thank you.

[suspenseful music]

[car engine starts]

Well, I wouldn't.

You made it, huh?

I hated the thought of sleeping alone.

-How's your mom? -Great.

Listen, it's a tough break,

but you guys got a stand in?

Well then, send them.

Grassland Coin haven't heard

from our beloved Mr. Johnston either,

so we're getting a replacement.

Already?

Yeah, the police are on the case.

They haven't heard from him.

A guy doesn't walk away

from $100 million building contract

to take a stroll in the park.

It just doesn't make any sense, you know what I mean?

-Hey. -Had dessert yet?

Hey, look. Dessert.

-[Karen] Hi. -Hi, how are you?

Great. Hey, let's go dish this up.

Jason's in the kitchen.

-How's your side? -Oh, barely a scratch, man.

Doing just fine.

Not bad for two old lawyers, huh?

Oh, who you calling old?

[both chuckle]

Hey, that ice cream is a nice surprise.

Well, actually,

it's more of an apology.

Frank, you don't have to apologize to me.

Not to you, Mack.

To Jason.

I was pretty tough on that kid.

And I had a dream about Pat the other night,

which reminded me

how interested I was in kissing

when I was his age.

So, how you doing at the firm?

-Great. -Great.

How about you?

-Good. -Good, good.

All my clients stuck around.

Oh, that means you're real busy.

-Real busy. -Not two.

-Just right. -Great.

It is.

How is that case of yours?

You mean Bosphorus Chemical?

-Bosphorus Chemical. -The company you call slime.

I didn't say that.

You don't have to apologize

for not thinking I was going to pass the bar test--

I never said that.

So that means you're not disappointed

that I'm doing good?

No, I think it's great.

Good.

-It's good. -Yeah.

So good that I think Bosphorus Chemical

is going to get away scot-free.

-Oh, well, that's, you know... -That is a crying shame.

-It's a crying shame. -It is a crying shame.

-They are slime. -They're slime.

Got something for you.

-You brought coffee too? -For the office.

If we're going to work together,

you got to learn to make decent coffee.

[Mack laughs]

I can't work for a firm that represents slime.

[both chuckle]

You weren't going to call me back, were you?

[chuckles]

Poor Meg. She just doesn't like ice cream.

Yeah, I do.

Here you go. Let's take this outside.

I guess this means you can see Jason again.

Yeah, I guess so.

You know, when Jason first moved here,

I wasn't sure how it would work out.

But he's a pretty nice guy, isn't he?

Yeah, he's very nice.

Very nice.

[Janelle chuckles]

[suspenseful music]

[melancholic music]

[metal clatters]

I hear you're leaving us.

Breaks your heart, huh?

In a way, yes.

Is Kate around anywhere?

You must be joking.

No, I'm not. I want to find her.

I don't think she wants to talk to you.

I would like to apologize to her.

Oh, you're one of those.

Those?

It doesn't matter what you do,

as long as you say you're sorry.

I realize I have made mistakes with both my children.

Oh, now that I'm leaving, I'm suddenly your kid.

Wait... I think you need to understand something here.

Every day since you were born I have felt ashamed.

Almost all my life

I have been hiding something

that turns out nobody even really cares about,

and my brother,

my brother, I thought,

he's gonna have an absolute field day

with all of this,

but he has accepted you.

If he can, I guess...

I finally can.

Well, that's mighty big of you.

[chuckles]

Everything I'm saying today is coming out wrong, isn't it?

Okay.

I hope things go well for you.

If you ever come back this way again,

maybe we can try from the beginning, uh?

I brought you something.

I want you to have this.

Your parents sent that to me through the agency,

when you were about six months old.

I asked them to.

Thank you.

Goodbye, Steve.

[ominous music]

[Bobby] Come on, Mom. They've got video games there.

[Val] I know, we're going to go in just a second.

We're on our way.

Are you sure you don't want me to keep these guys?

No way! Shopping with kids can be a treat.

We get to see every restroom in the mall.

Eat tons of fast food.

[Karen] Then, we get to buy at the toy store.

Play wee silly songs in the car.

Oh, it'll be great.

And, by the way,

Gary,

this ring? Not too shabby.

Thanks.

-[starts engine] -[Val laughs]

We'll see you later.

Bye.

[Val laughs]

No, that's right. A Volkswagen van.

No, he was here about an hour ago.

He was very agitated,

something about getting back at the people

who put him in prison.

Well, I tried to calm him down,

but he's so unpredictable.

Especially when he gets in one of those violent states.

And now I see that my g*n is missing.

Yes, I'm afraid my son has taken my g*n.

[ominous music]

-Anne. -Hi.

Hi.

-Is Mack here? -No.

Are you expecting him?

No, I don't think he'll be back today.

[police sirens wailing]

-Do you mind? -No, go ahead.

I'll be right back.

[sighs]

[sniffles]

[chattering]

Hi.

Hi.

I... I'm sorry to bother you,

but I'm worried about Kate.

Yeah, so I heard.

I was way out of line, wasn't I?

I'm very sorry.

It's just that Kate is so vulnerable and trusting,

and I have a tendency to look out for her

a little bit too much.

I guess I think my daughter is so beautiful

I assume everybody else does.

Well, she is beautiful,

and one of these days, a much younger man

will be very lucky together.

Apparently this has all just been blown out of proportion.

Look, I haven't seen my daughter in two days

and I am very concerned.

I thought maybe she was here with you.

-Have you seen her? -Yeah.

She came by early this morning with Steve.

She's going to take a week off

and help him move back to Washington.

Kate's with Steve?
