13x01 - The g*n Also Rises

Post by bunniefuu »

[theme music]

-[Gary] Marry me. -[Val gasps] Gary.

[cheering]

-Two hundred and fifty thousand? -Yeah.

-What's the catch? -There is no catch.

You can take that and go back to your little log in town

and make a difference, or you can...

I don't know. Kick back in the Bahamas.

-Where are you going? -You know what, mom?

I don't know.

You know, maybe I'll look up my brother Steve

and see if he needs a roommate.

He and I seem to have a lot more in common.

We both have parents we're ashamed of.

Well, I tried to calm him down, but he's so unpredictable

especially when he gets in one of those violent states.

Goodbye, Steve.

I'm not going back to prison.

Why would you go back to prison?

Carrying a g*n violates my parole.

That didn't take long.

-That's not my g*n. -What is this?

Read him his rights.

You have the right to remain silent--

-Hold or I'll sh**t. -[shouting] No! No!

[g*nsh*t]

Ryan, I want you to meet Paige Matheson.

I'm delighted to meet you, Miss Matheson.

What's that?

[tense music]

Nothing.

It's a video camera?

-Yeah. -It's on.

What, you've never made videos--

No.

There's probably a lot of things

you didn't like until he tried it.

-[slap] -[moans in pain]

-One last fling? -I get to keep the tape.

[Ryan] Showtime.

Yo, Fairgate.

[Linda] Greg. Greg's here. You have to hide.

I know.

Linda, this isn't the fifties. Just tell him I'm here.

Matheson, you're late.

[Paige] I've been on the phone

to Brian Johnson's secretary.

-Where is he? -She hasn't heard from him.

The hotel clerk says she didn't sleep

in his bed last night.

He hasn't picked up his messages

and the valet hasn't seen his car.

He's disappeared.

You're fired.

I quit.

Cut the damsel in distress routine.

-I want the rent. -You'll get your money.

Tonight, and if I don't get it

I'm going to the police with those counterfeit bills.

[Paige] I can't come to the phone right now.

Please leave a message.

[voicemail beeps]

Paige, this is your mother.

I know how you feel about sharing your apartment

but something has come up and I need to impose.

[music continues]

I think you're right. I should stop worrying too.

[Betsy] Don't forget mine.

-[splat] -[Karen screams]

[Val] Somebody shot you with paint?

[Karen shouting] Wait!

Hey. One sec.

Karen wait. What are you doing?

Don't, Karen. Don't go.

-[motor rumbling] -[car horn honks]

[car tires screech]

-[truck horn honks] -[crash]

[music continues]

Jason.

[EKG machine beeping]

[ventilator hissing]

-I just saw Dr. Callichio. -And?

Well, if there's no more dilation

and if his reflexes are normal

and if this and if that, Jason will be fine

When I asked him how big the ifs are

and what are the chances, he wouldn't say.

What about the other boys in the car?

Minor cuts and bruises.

They're keeping one kid around

for observation, the Morgan kid

but they're pretty sure he's alright.

You brought me coffee?

-Don't bring me coffee. -Don't bring you coffee?

Just don't be good to me about this, okay?

-Karen... -I did this. I put him there.

Wait a minute. You were shot at.

You were standing there on the sidewalk

with the children

and you were shot at out of the blue.

It was a paint pill and a prank.

You didn't know that, you didn't know

Jason was in the car.

Mack, don't be my lawyer on this, okay?

Karen, listen to me.

You're going to say I did just fine.

You were hit.

Could have been Meg. Could have been the twins.

Did you save Jason from his father

just so something like this could happen

just so your own wife could run him off the road

and maybe k*ll him?

You had no idea.

You had no idea Jason was in the car.

If you're gonna be understanding about this...

Alright.

I talked to the officers that were involved.

What I got from them adds up.

Miss Whittaker, are you alright?

What did the officer say?

The deceased was an ex-con

who served three years for as*ault.

We had a phone in that he had stolen a weapon

and was heading north

after making some violent threats.

That's why they pulled him over.

He didn't steal the g*n.

He didn't know that the g*n was there.

Well, he denied having the weapon

which was subsequently found in the van

when he tried to escape.

He was afraid of going back to jail.

Gary.

Who phoned in that he stole the g*n?

Tell me who you are again. Relative of the deceased?

I'm a friend of Kate's and her mother.

-Claudia Whitaker? -Yeah, that's her mother.

She was too shaken up to come and get Kate

so she sent me.

That's who phoned it in. The mother.

She said she bought the g*n for protection from her son.

He had been making threats.

Then this morning he took it from her.

According to her, he took off in a rage.

None of that is true. Steve would not threaten her.

You saying your mother was lying about him stealing the g*n?

How did the g*n get there?

-She must have put it there, -Then phoned it in?

-She must have. -She knew he was on parole.

If she did, she'd be sending him back to prison.

Her own son.

Exactly.

[eerie music]

I'll get through his personal effects

and you can take them with you.

You don't believe me either, do you?

You saw your brother shot before your eyes.

Kate, you heard what the captain said.

Your mother had to phone the police.

Steve was making threats. He was in a rage.

He wasn't in a rage.

We were singing when they pulled us over.

I mean, if Steve...

If he was gonna k*ll someone

why would he have taken me along?

But why would he?

You gonna be alright?

I'm not sure this is a very good idea.

Yeah, I'm gonna be fine.

Thank you.

Okay.

-Katie. -Why are you here?

I wanted to be where he was.

Those are his things?

Yeah. The police kept the g*n.

This is the rest of his stuff.

T-thank you.

Oh.

-Oh, forgive me. -Forgive you?

-For what I did to Steve. -You mean the g*n?

You mean putting the g*n there and then calling the police?

g*n?

Steve took the g*n.

Then what are you doing?

Because I'm responsible.

I am responsible for what happened here.

Maybe, if I'd told him the truth

when he first came here, if I'd just been a little bit

more accepting of him than he would have been so--

You're lying. You're lying about the g*n.

He was my baby and I gave him away.

He was your son and you k*lled him.

[Claudia] No.

Whatever you are feeling, how can you even think

that I would wanna see him dead?

I want you to go.

Gary, just get her out of here, please.

[whispering] I'll go.

Will you be okay?

[dramatic music]

-Can I help you, ma'am? -Yes, I think you could.

Good.

I've been wearing very little makeup at all.

Very little makeup's nice, yes.

But I don't know. I feel like something new.

Something new is nice, too.

Here's something new. A line that just came out.

It's not for everyone, but I think it would suit you.

Should we try it?

Oh, I don't know if I have time for a full makeover.

You should take the time. You deserve it.

We all do.

Alright.

Should we start with the base?

Your undertones are yellow.

We ought to think peaches.

And I'd like to smudge a pencil along the lash line

to bring out your eyes.

[man 1] Excuse me.

You left this in the restroom, lady.

-No, I didn't. -I saw you bring it in there.

-I'm not gonna argue with you. -I said. It's not mine.

Look, it's clothing. This isn't the Salvation Army.

If you don't want me to throw it away

take it and go.

How dare you?

Alright. I'll leave.

But would you please finish me?

You heard him. Go.

Look, I'll come back later and pay you.

Now finish me.

You started me. Now finish me.

Well... I'll just take it off then.

[dramatic music]

[telephone ringing]

Miss Matheson's office.

Yes. One moment, please.

Miss Matheson, it's your mother.

You know what to do.

I'm sorry, ma'am. She stepped away.

May I take a message?

I just heard that Steve Brewer was k*lled.

Shot running away from the police.

Haven't got the whole story yet.

I'm sorry.

I'm really sorry.

I guess he was going up north

to this little logging town he grew up in.

He was gonna save it from unscrupulous businessmen

like me.

I gave him some dough to get started.

Give his big ideas a shot.

It was kind of like a bet.

A bet?

Yeah, I was betting that he wouldn't

even go to that logging town.

That he'd just loaded dough on himself.

I was hoping he'd prove me wrong.

He would have.

Look, I was supposed to go to Vancouver

to close the Engel deal.

-Maybe I should stick around. -No. Go ahead.

You were gonna take an extra day.

-Yeah, I don't have to. -Take two.

I liked him.

I liked him a lot.

The trip to Vancouver is on.

I'll need the files on the Engel buyout.

Right now? It's a crazy time to be leaving.

I'll need the spreadsheets, financial reports.

-Everything. -Wait.

I thought the police wanted to talk to you

about Brian Johnston.

-What? -I saw them.

I saw Detective Ryan going to your office.

Oh, I get it.

It's because he's in love with you, isn't it?

He's fixed it.

That's why they're letting you go.

For your information, Detective Ryan is nothing to me.

And the reason that the police aren't interested in me

is because I'm innocent.

So let me tell you something.

If you ever talk to me like this again

or behave like this again, you will not have a job here.

I don't care who you're sleeping with.

Is that clear?

I leave to the airport at one o'clock.

Have my files ready.

[tense music]

[waves lapping]

Hey!

Hey, fella. You okay?

[gasps]

[wave crashing]

[shouting] Huh?!

[gasps]

-Whoa. Easy. -[horse neighing]

-Hey! Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. -[horse neighing]

[Gary] Whoa, easy. Whoa. Whoa. Easy, boy.

-Easy. Easy. Whoa. Whoa. -[water splashing]

[snap]

Hey.

[waves crashing]

[gasp]

-Hey. You okay? -What?

Oh, man. You broke...

You broke my rig.

I was working here, mister.

I've been setting this up for weeks.

Your horse tore this up.

-I thought you needed help. -Help?

Doing what? Ruining my experiment?

Oh. man. It's ruined.

I thought I was saving your damn life.

-Thanks. -I'm not looking for thanks.

No, but thanks anyway.

-What is it? -What is what?

This thing. Contraption.

It measures the force of the waves.

For what? Navigation? Fishing? Surfing?

-What? -Energy.

Now see.

This sand, pounded fine

by the waves, the force.

Listen. Force.

I mean, we can hook this up to light cities, run factories.

I teach oceanography at the university.

Joseph Barringer.

Gary Ewing.

[seagulls squawking]

[waves crashing]

I'll take these in the back then and prepare the estimate.

Thank you.

I'll take care of it, whatever it costs.

That isn't necessary, but thank you.

It'll be a small ceremony.

Anything else you need?

Yes.

Yes. Yes, there is.

It's about Kate.

You know that this happened right in front of her.

Please.

Please forgive her in advance

for the things that she may say to you.

-What things? -About me.

You want me to forgive her for something she's gonna say

about you in advance?

Yes.

It's that she has it in her head that what happened was my fault.

That I planted the g*n that the police found.

Well, it hardly matters what she says.

-She's so confused. -What about the g*n?

He took it.

He stole it.

Gregory.

I know we have thought the worst of each other

over these past years, but you cannot believe

that I would deliberately do him harm.

Yeah, I guess you only gave him away once.

Don't you think I blame myself for that?

Last thing I said to him was

"Maybe we could try again sometime."

I never wanted this.

Did you love him?

He was my son.

But did you love him?

No.

Somehow I couldn't put him together

with the baby that I had, not after all these years.

Well...

I'm glad I just said that

because if you had said yes, I wouldn't have believed you.

You're something else, babe.

[car horn honking]

[man 2] No. Orange.

[man 2] Yeah, how you doing?

[indistinct chatter]

[shouting] Benny?

[Anne] Benny!

Hey, Benny!

[shouting] Benny Appleman!

-[car tires screech] -Watch it, lady.

-[car horn honks] -Get out of the way!

Gee!

Benny!

[Benny pants]

[Anne pants]

-[Anne grunts] -[Benny screams]

[Benny groans]

Get off me. Get off me. Get off...

If you run, I'll just catch you again.

Serves me right for appreciating fine food.

What kind of man is it that runs when he hears his name called?

Don't you turn to see who it is?

Hey, hey, hey.

I don't wanna hurt your feelings

but even if I saw who it was, I still wouldn't want...

-Do you remember me? -Yeah, we did some pictures.

Used on some guy.

What, in Italy?

-Yeah. Blackmail. -Right.

Why don't you just take out a billboard or something?

What do you want with me?

-You owe me money, Benny. -I what?

You took $500 from me for a set of pictures

that you never delivered.

Oh, no.

I-I left specific instructions

that those pictures should be delivered right--

Hey, save it.

I need every cent of it back. I'm on the streets.

Uh-huh. No kidding.

It's a long story

but the short version is that I ran out of luck.

I don't have any friends.

The friends I have don't like me.

Then I saw you go by.

That doesn't exactly mean your luck's changing.

Yeah, sure. Tell me you're broke.

Broke? That's maybe too strong.

But let's just say that $500 is beyond the realm of possibility.

Whatever you can give me then.

Some... Maybe broke is not too strong.

At least you can help me.

How can I help you

while I'm just getting by myself?

Well, you have a place to stay, for starters.

[stutters]

No way.

-You owe me, Benny. -Come on.

It's a little place of tight little white--

-Benny. -It's a one thing...

Get in.

Get in.

[engine starting]

Here's all this power, replenishing itself for free.

And meanwhile

nations fight each other over oil.

They use up land fuels, tear up the earth, soil the air.

How come nobody's ever tried this before?

In France, they've got a power plant on a tidal river

but all they're doing is damning it up in a reservoir.

-You know, like Hoover Dam. -Yeah.

I'm talking about going out there into the waves.

Excuse me, professor, I hope you'll forgive me

for leaving now, but I have a friend

who's in the hospital.

Oh, sure. Of course. Thank you for the dinner.

-Give my best to Karen. -I will, sweetheart.

Okay.

Alright.

Just suppose that...

you built a sluiceway...

Karen?

-I'm glad you're here. -Oh.

[sad music]

Is there any change?

That's supposed to be good news.

But it doesn't feel like good news.

Come here. Sit with me.

You know, mama told me, "Never say to somebody

that you know how they feel."

But I think I do know how you feel.

-Because you were there? -Mm-hmm.

[sighs] Val...

Listen to me.

I keep thinking about that moment.

-I know I'm being shot at. -Yeah.

It was so weird.

It was sickening, you know.

It was frightening.

-Is that how you felt? -Of course.

Then you felt just like me.

-But you didn't do what I did. -Well, no--

You didn't get in the car and chase them...

and become like them.

Well, because i-it... You know. It all happened so fast.

I didn't have to because you did.

Val.

Don't lie to me.

You never do lie to me.

Don't start now because you think I need it.

[music continues]

[Anne slaps table] Agh! Ugh! Ew.

God.

If my home don't meet your standards

I got a good suggestion.

I'm staying.

You sure you had enough for breakfast?

I was hungry.

I gotta find somewhere to get you fixed up.

I can't afford the groceries.

And I ain't heard you offered to pitch in on cash flow.

Well, put your thinking cap on, Benny.

I got a lot of faith in you.

Do you actually mind if I do the dishes?

Just be careful with the china.

-It's the ones underneath. -[Anne chuckles]

Alright. Come on. Come on. Come on, come on.

[claps]

Alright. Alright. I'm just spit balling now.

-There's flop scamming. -Flop scamming?

Taking a flop, then you sue.

Now that's a long check if you play it right.

And there hasn't been a significant female flopper

since the late Estelle Billings of Des Moines.

I attended her funeral.

-End of an era. -I take it she died on the job.

[Benny] What?

Estelle hurt herself from a fall down?

No, no way. She died in bed

with a big market position in Midwestern dry goods.

-I don't know. -Oh, sure.

Be picky.

What about something like you do?

[spits]

Candid photography.

I mean, you still work

for private investigators, don't you?

I helped them with their married clientele.

Yes.

Shot in every motel in the greater LA area.

Maybe there's something there for me.

[Benny] Might be an angle, sure.

So that's the secret with those things, huh?

Yeah.

Alright, I'll be in the... powder room, doing research.

[instrumental music]

[EKG machine beeping]

[dramatic music]

Karen.

Jason.

How are you feeling?

Okay. Shh. Dumb question.

I'm just... thirsty.

Don't try to talk, okay?

You're gonna be okay.

That's what Doctor Callichio says.

You hear that?

Okay.

Shh.

Hush.

Let me just say this.

When they shot at you...

they made me come with them.

There was a guy, you know, that stabbed Paul.

I know. Shh.

When they shot at you, I was so angry...

And when you got in your car and took off after them

they couldn't believe it. They...

They couldn't believe this lady had that much guts.

Jason.

Do you forgive me?

Forgive you?

I'm proud of you.

[indistinct chatter]

[phone beeping]

[automated message] You have one new message.

[Anne] Hello, Paige. This is your mother.

Don't worry, I don't want anything.

I'm fine.

I'm on my own and I'm strictly legitimate.

If you'd like to call me, my new number is

Let it ring twice, then call back.

And if someone answers saying

it's Santucci's Pizzeria or something

don't worry.

You can leave a message. Love you. Bye.

[Anne] I parked over there.

[Paige] Mother, new apartment and a new car?

What have you been up to since I last saw you?

Let me ask you something first.

I was delighted when you called and asked me to pick you up.

Delighted and surprised

because you've never called and asked me for anything.

To think of it, you've never called me.

Period.

What's going on with you, Paige?

Oh, mom.

Mom?

[chuckles]

Okay. Tell me about him.

I don't know much. It's hard to describe.

Well, it's everything. It's the way we met.

We... Well, we met on the dock.

I'd gone down there to rent a Sunfish

to go sailing for the day.

That was yesterday morning.

You've only known him for a day?

Yeah, we knew we didn't have much time

so we made up this rule.

-What rule? -No questions.

We didn't wanna know each other's names

or where we lived or anything about each other's lives.

Nothing. Just each other.

You don't even know his name?

Well, I do now.

We exchanged names and numbers before we left.

Is he married?

Can't be.

Pierce.

-Pierce? -It's his name.

[Paige giggles]

It's love, mother. You should try it sometime.

Your father and I were in love.

Here it is.

It's a long story.

Okay.

Uncle Greg?

I tried to call you. You're not at your mother's.

Yeah, I was staying at Steve's place.

-You think that's a good idea? -I don't wanna forget him.

Who said we should forget him?

And I don't wanna forget what happened.

Well, your mother ought to be here in a few minutes.

I want you to know about it, Uncle Greg.

I want you to know what she did.

I don't think we need to talk about this now.

You see, she has everyone believing

that I'm so upset that I've got the facts all wrong

but I don't.

I was with Steve in that van

and he had no idea the g*n was there.

My mother was the only one who knew

because she put it there and then she called the police.

-Why? -What?

Why would she do that?

I don't know.

Well, don't you think that that's a question

you should find an answer to before you condemn her?

How can you defend her? You cared about Steve.

I'm not defending her, I just think that that's

an interesting question you should ask yourself.

Why would she do something like that?

Even your mother would draw a line.

You know, I knew she could fool everyone else.

But I never thought she'd fool you.

Well, maybe you're the one who's being fooled.

Not by your mother, but by Stephen.

Where are you going?

We're planning a small ceremony in the chapel.

I don't need a ceremony to remember Steve.

How can you leave like this?

How can you be here?

How can you have even come?

I'm gonna want to track him close for a day or two.

Keep him right here.

Well, a day or two is all you get.

And then we want him home. Thank you.

My pleasure. I'm glad he pulled through.

Oh, yeah, you bet.

You feel like 20 tons have been lifted off you?

Forty, and I'm actually getting an appetite

and an overwhelming desire to sleep in a bed like a person.

You're Miss MacKenzie, aren't you?

Yes, that's right.

You were driving the car that chased the boys?

I'm sorry, who are you?

I'm Ida Morgan.

The mother of one of the boys. You're hurt or anything?

No, I wasn't hurt.

Your boy was, though.

Quit pulling at me, Fred.

Yes, our boy was hurt.

How's he doing?

Better now.

If you'll excuse us.

Aren't you gonna ask me how my boy was doing?

I'm sorry. Of course.

-How is he? -He's okay.

They can't find nothing wrong with him.

We're here to pick him up. Ida, leave them alone.

-Come on. -No.

I just wanna show you something, Miss MacKenzie.

I want to show you a bill for $2000 that we don't have.

Ida...

There wouldn't have been any accident except for her.

Take it easy. Get her under control.

Let's just go, Mack.

Don't you walk away when I'm talking to you.

Oh, I do. You listen to me now.

I'm sorry about your son, but he's in a g*ng

that threatened Jason and stabbed a kid at a party

never mind sh**ting at me on the street.

How dare you raise a child and stand there

not take any responsibility for how he behaves

how he hurts people and frightens them?

What difference does it make what you say, lady?

We're dirt to you. We don't count.

You've tried talking. Come on. Let's go.

Mrs. Morgan? Mr. Morgan?

Yes, sir.

Come with me, please.

[man 4] I'd like to talk with you both alone.

-No. -It's okay.

If you can't find out what's wrong

let me take him.

-Let me just take that boy home. -Oh, my God, Mack.

The Morgan boy?

A fluke. It's nuts.

Aortic dissection.

His chest must have hit the steering wheel.

It's got nothing to do with the way he hit his head.

He's dead?

[groans]

[telephone ringing]

Hello?

No, there's no Norma Ray here.

Don't ask me if I'm sure. You've got the wrong number.

Oh, ring or don't ring. See if I care.

What you doing?

Nothing.

Scribbling.

-Fooling around with some ideas. -Yeah?

Yeah. Oh.

Book ideas.

Figured it was time that I wrote another book.

Especially since you're gonna be busy

harnessing the vast energy of the sea.

[chuckles] You're teasing.

[laughs] Yeah, I'm teasing.

You're teasing or worried?

I'm excited. Come on.

I think you're the one who's worried.

It's weird, this idea of Joseph's.

-What? -I could see it.

I could feel it from the first word.

I knew it could be something great.

Yeah, but?

I don't know.

Things are going so well. We've got a good life.

I mean, we don't need this.

Yeah, but there are all kinds of needs.

Need your work you believe in.

That's a need too.

I remember how you used to talk about ecology.

-Could you... -Okay.

You know, the importance of taking care of the Earth.

Yeah, well, nowadays I'd say preserving it.

Yeah.

Either way, it's neat.

I haven't worked out the money yet.

-And I know there'll be risks. -I know there'll be risks.

Where's it gonna take us?

[telephone ringing]

Hello?

Mom, hi.

Yeah. Yeah. I had a nice time too.

No, no.

If I sound like that, it's not because of you.

It's because he hasn't called yet.

[knocks on door]

Someone's at the door. Hold on a second.

[Paige giggles]

[upbeat music]

What are you doing here?

[Anne] Paige? Are you there? Honey?

Honey.

[woman on PA] Dr. Wispinski, to Orthopedics.

-Mrs. MacKenzie? -Oh.

Jason's fine. It's not about that.

I just wanted to say something to you.

Oh.

Alright.

I just heard,

you know, about the other boy.

I didn't know the whole story about the g*ng.

Now everybody's talking about it.

What is it you're trying to say?

My mother, Mrs. MacKenzie, she was...

She was knocked down by a g*ng

last year in front of a department store.

Broad daylight. Nobody did anything.

-The police? Nobody. -Why are you telling me this?

You did something, Mrs. MacKenzie.

You struck back.

-Thank you. -You're thanking me?

-For what I did? -Oh...

There are lots of people who will thank you.

Well, I've got to get back to work.

-Jason's nice? -It wasn't about Jason.

-I just talked to Frank. -Frank?

Yeah, he's gonna be your attorney instead of me.

It makes more sense.

-I don't need an attorney. -Karen.

Now that that boy died, the DA has a decision to make.

Does he have a wrongful death here

and he's gonna wanna ask you questions.

-Yes, you need an attorney. -Mack.

That nurse.

They're gonna make a hero out of me.

A hero? What?

Like I'm some sort of a vigilante.

They wanna make a hero out of me for k*lling that boy.

You didn't k*ll anybody. That was an accident.

Do you hear me?

Feel as bad or as guilty as you want.

What you did was right and natural.

I don't want to hear you say you k*lled anybody.

Mack...

The fact that that boy died or if Jason had died

doesn't change anything.

You're not guilty. Know that you're not guilty.

[narrator] Next, on Knots Landing...

If you agree, my lawyers and I are planning

on taking this to the Sumner Group.

The things I've heard about Sumner...

Yeah, they're all true but he's got some kind of money

we'll need and the political clout.

You need to get a meeting right away

with this Barringer guy.

I'll have Gary set it up.

Forget Ewing. We don't need him.

We might be in love.

-You're going too fast. -Let's go. Let's go too fast.

Well, we don't want to press charges for manslaughter.

-Manslaughter? -You'll never get a conviction.

We're not gonna just let this go away.
