But I drank too much, and when the boat went down

I couldn't help her.

I loved her and she died and it's my fault

and I'll never forgive myself.

The word is that she was pregnant.

That he m*rder*d her

and sunk the boat to cover it up.

I don't believe that.

I don't want you to be the next accident.

I saw you watching Meg at gymnastics.

I wanna know what you're doing.

I'm closely following the progress of a little girl

that matters very much to me.

We'll worry about her. It's our job.

-She's our daughter. -Do you understand?

He's telling us we've fallen on our face.

I know how to build this thing so it will work.

And if it doesn't?

I wanna mortgage the ranch.

Put it up as collateral on another loan.

[endearing music playing]

[birds chirping]

[Meg] Mommy.

What is it, honey?

Is it Christmas yet?

[sighs]

-Not yet, honey. -Is it Christmas Eve?

It's Christmas Eve Eve.

What do we do on Christmas Eve Eve?

-We make cookies. -With sprinkles?

[Mack] Yeah.

And then Daddy and Jason go and get the tree

and eat all the cookies with the sprinkles.

-Good morning, you. -[Mack gasps]

-What happened? -What?

Look.

My other tooth!

It must have fallen out while you were sleeping.

Come on, let's go look for it.

Hey, but be quiet and let Jason sleep.

-Are you okay? -Yeah.

But the day after tomorrow he goes bye-bye.

-Come on, Mommy. -Ooh. Okay.

[Kate groans]

[Val screams, laughs] Kate!

What is... What is this?

The biggest one in the store for the best kids I know.

The only thing is they're gonna have to share it.

-I hope that's not a problem. -No, of course not.

Are you kidding? They're gonna be so excited.

-Here, put him over here. Ooh! -I'm sorry.

Good Grace. Ah!

[chuckles] This is amazing.

Sweetie, you didn't have to do this.

Oh, oh, don't be silly. I wanted to say thank you.

-Thank you for what? -What?

You and Gary.

You guys have been like parents to me.

-[Val] Come here. -[Kate giggles]

Sweetheart.

You know, umm...

-Speaking of parents... -Oh, I know, I know.

I'm gonna see my mother tonight for dinner.

Can you imagine my mother making a turkey?

-Yes. Actually, I can. -And how about this?

Uncle Greg invited Joseph and me over for Christmas Eve

I think that sounds nice.

-Uncle Greg and Joseph? -Yes.

I feel like I'm leading him into the lion's den.

Oh, come on.

Your uncle can be very charming when he wants to be.

-[chuckles] Did you accept? -Yes, I did.

I just have to tell Joseph.

He has been a little hard to talk to lately.

I know. So is Gary.

-Really? -Yep.

I'm sure that you know that Gary has a lot

invested in Tidal Energy.

Yeah, I know.

But Joseph says that everything's gonna be alright.

I mean that the idea is still good

if everyone can just hang in there.

Yeah, he's right.

I hope so.

Wow.

[Val and Kate laugh]

[Betsy] Wow!

-Thanks! -Yeah.

Kate got that for you, sweetie, for Christmas.

Thanks.

-Kate and Joseph. -How?

What'd you get for Bobby?

Gary. Come in. Come in. Happy holidays.

-So how you doing? -Frankly, not so well.

You know, I would have thought with the amount of money

I pumped into this bank over the years

my getting a mortgage would be a slam dunk.

Well, Gary, we--

Now, I find out that there are problems.

Gary, please just hold on a minute, huh?

Sit down. Sit down, please.

We're talking about several millions of dollars here.

Before we say yes, we just have a few things

that we'd like to get cleared up.

What things?

You've got more than enough information

on Tidal Energy.

Well, we're not talking about the project itself.

Let's just say it's a matter of character.

Character?

I'm only gonna say this once.

My life and my past are my business.

No, no, we're not talking about your character.

I'm talking about Pierce Lawton.

Pierce?

The boating accident.

Y-you are aware of it, aren't you?

-[sighs] No. -Well...

A girl died.

H-how long ago was this?

[man] Oh, nearly ten years ago.

I suppose one could put it

in the category of a youthful indiscretion.

I'll vouch for his character.

That is if my word's still good around here.

-Of course it is, Gary. -Fine.

You let me know when that loan comes through, alright?

[keys clacking]

Gary...

How'd it go at the bank?

First, you were gone when I needed you here.

I wasn't gonna say anything about it

but it's been eating at me.

We're supposed to be shoulder to shoulder on this thing

and the last thing I expected

was for you to take off and not even tell me

that the Tomita deal had gone away.

-Fair enough. I'm sorry. -[Gary] There's more.

-What more? -Don Bailey at the bank.

He asked me what I knew about a sailing accident

of yours ten years ago.

And you know what my answer was?

-That I knew absolutely nothing. -That shouldn't have come up.

There was an inquest. I was exonerated.

Well, it did come up and it will again, Pierce.

And it's something I damn sure should have known about.

-Of course. I agree. -I'm your business partner.

[shouting] You cannot keep me in the dark.

Right.

You're right. I'm sorry.

I took you on trust.

-We took each other on trust. -That's bull.

You had me checked out and I feel like an idiot

for not having done the same to you.

Look, Gary, you're in the right on this.

I should have told you from the beginning

but I swear I didn't think it was important.

Now I realized I was wrong.

Is there anything else?

Any other secrets I'm gonna trip over?

Everything there is to know you now know.

You have my word.

Is the loan going through?

Can't be sure.

-What now? -[sighs]

Payroll's covered.

-Will you give me some? -Nah, I wouldn't give you any.

But maybe Santa Claus would.

Uncle Greg.

Do you have any children?

that I leave on Christmas Day.

Oh, there's nothing you could do about that, was there?

-No. -You know,

I don't think you remember how excited you were

about this when it first happened.

Yeah, but that was before it was really real

[applause]

h*, h*, h*!

Merry Christmas.

[cheering]

Oh, h*, h*, h*.

-Santa! -Santa!

Merry Christmas. h*, h*, h*, h*!

Have you been good little children?

-[kids] Yeah. -Yes? h*, h*, h*!

[Meg] Ooh, the lights are on!

Come on! Let's go look out at the window.

-[Betsy] Let's go. -[Bobby] Okay. Cool.

[Meg] Watch out. Don't step on the presents.

Santa.

[endearing music]

I kind of liked it better without the lights.

Yeah, me too.

[Bobby and Betsy] Wow!

Awesome!

-Look at the snowman. -Wow.

[upbeat music playing]

Mommy.

Oh. Morning, honey.

-Tooth fairy came. -Oh!

-Count on the old tooth fairy. -Santa Claus too.

-Did he? -Come on, get up!

Oh, well, I'll be down in a minute

Aren't you forgetting something?

-Merry Christmas. -Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Mwah! Merry Christmas.

[Mack chuckles]

Hey.

What?

It's Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Jason leaves this morning.

[birds chirping]

So how long I've been here?

A year?

Yeah, thereabouts.

How come this feels more like my home

than that other place I used to live at for 16 years?

Well, Jason, because it is yours.

Anytime you wanna come back.

It's yours.

You're a good guy, Jason.

I'll get Meg and Karen.

[sighs]

[telephone ringing]

Hello. Merry Christmas.

-[chuckles] Jason. -Jason?

We just got back.

How long did they say it was gonna be?

Alright, look, you know, take a walk

around the terminal, read that book.

You know, read a chapter. Hold on a second.

Karen wants to say hi.

Alright, call back. Hold on.

Jace? Hi.

Uh-huh. Listen. Umm...

I'm gonna come back to the airport.

Right. Well.

I think we should talk.

Bye.

My aching back.

[sighs] It's the season, you know.

Wears me out.

You okay, kid?

-Yeah, I'm fine. -Yeah, I'm fine, Santa.

[Karen] Jason.

Here.

Oh, cool. Let's go. I'm ready.

Go where?

Well, didn't you come to take me back?

Why don't you sit down for a minute?

Come on.

Why do you want me to take you back?

Why?

Why hang around the airport for the next two hours?

I mean, I could just catch the same flight tomorrow.

Is that really it?

I don't know, Karen.

I don't feel like going.

I'm not ready.

It's like there's something that I'm hanging on to

that I can't let go of.

It's you guys.

I think it's your father.

I think you've been waiting for him to call.

Send a card to acknowledge you're going away.

And it's okay to feel that way.

It would be strange if you didn't.

All I can say is

the sooner you stop waiting for him

the better off you're gonna be.

I can't give up on him, Karen.

[melancholic music playing]

I don't think I can...

because if I do...

that means...

You'll never be alone. You always have Mack.

And Meg...

and me.

I promise.

[gasps] Oh. It's beautiful, mother.

Oh, you liked it? Oh, good.

Yeah, Christmas lunch sounds great.

Okay. Alright.

I'll meet you in front of the museum

in half an hour.

Okay.

Okay, I'll see you then.

Hi.

You were gone when I woke up.

Well, I had to get something for you.

I left it in my drawer at the ranch.

I knew you'd have a good explanation.

You know

I don't know if I can take this bitterness between us.

[chuckles] Why don't you walk out the door?

It's always a solution, isn't it?

Here's your present.

[sighs]

Oh, don't tell me you can't take it.

You can't take a gift from me.

Thanks.

You know something that I just can't get off my mind?

It's Sumner being here.

And you letting him in.

What was I supposed to do? Make him stand on the doormat?

And you just stood around in the living room chatting?

Well, yes, as a matter of fact, we did.

Hmm.

Did he get you this?

-What? -Huh?

What did he get you? What did he get you?

He didn't get me that.

-Silk nightgown. -What are you doing?

-[hangers clattering] -Satin robe?

Huh? You know what?

I'm looking in the wrong place.

What did he get you, huh?

Is it this? Is it this? Is it this? Is it this?

Is it this? Oh, was it this?

Huh? Did he put his initials on it?

-Get out. -[Pierce pants]

Get out.

I'm sorry.

I...

Just get out.

[panting] Okay.

[door slams]

[sighs]

Merry Christmas.

[narrator] Next, on Knots Landing...

Who are you?

Rosa Barth had a nephew.

You don't have to put up the bank's money.

How much time does it buy us?

You could lose your home.

You're destroying yourself

and you're going to destroy us.

-It's not happening. -It is happening, Gary.

Why don't you just come out and tell me

what it is you're trying to say?

The last girl Pierce loved the way he loves your daughter

ended up dead.

When did he buy you off? Yesterday?

Two months ago? Huh?

-Pierce! -... in beginning? Huh?
