14x02 - Lovers and Other Strangers

Post by bunniefuu »

Ah. Uh, my name is Gary Ewing

and my wife Valene disappeared about two days ago.

E-W-I-N-G.

No, G as in Gary? No.

My wife's name is Val, Valene.

V-A-L--

V-A-L-E-N-E.

Yes, she's been missing for 48 hours.

No, she's not in the habit of taking off

without telling me, something has happened to my wife.

She did not run away.

The hotel said she checked out two days ago.

The rental car company said she never turned in the car.

The airline said she never got on the plane.

Now, don't you think that means she's missing?

'I'll be happy to fill out a report.'

If you want me to, I'll come to Florida to fill it out.

But I want you to start looking for her now.

[knock on door]

Oh, miss Matheson.

I know Mr. Sumner isn't here, Carlos.

And I know that you're not supposed to tell me where he is.

But I would not be here unless it was very important.

Now, Mr. Sumner would want to talk to me

and it is very important that I talk to him.

Uh, that's what your mother said.

- My mother? - When she called.

She called?

Looking for Mr. Sumner, uh, just like you.

- What did you tell her? - She said it was an emergency.

Did you tell her?

He went to his cabin in Montana.

And she followed?

Well, she sounded so terribly upset.

[slow dramatic music]

Uh, is there anything I can do to help?

No. Thank you. It's not important anymore.

[door closes]

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[crickets chirping]

[howling in the distance]

[wind whistling]

[instrumental music]

[shivering]

[owl hooting]

Who's there?

Greg, is that you?

It's not funny.

[owl hooting]

Stupid animal.

[wings flapping]

[music continues]

[howling in distance]

Ah! Oh! Wait! Stop! Help!

Help!

Ah! Ah! Ah!

Oh! Thank God you came.

I was almost eaten by wild animals.

I warned you about this trail. You're one stubborn fool.

You're just lucky I decided to come after you.

Well, I'll count my blessings later. Now take me to Greg.

I'm supposed to take you to the airport.

Fine. Don't give me a ride. I'll find him by myself.

Ma'am. Ma'am, please come back. You're going to hurt yourself.

I promise I won't sue you.

Yeah, but Mr. Sumner will k*ll me.

Take me to his campsite. That's where I'm going.

With or without your help.

[sighs] Alright, I'll take you. But not tonight.

That trail's too dangerous out there.

Tonight you sleep here, in the Jeep.

I'm in the front. You got the back.

It's okay. Your virtue is safe with me.

[dog barking]

Shut up.

Ooh.

Oh.

[sighs]

[soft dramatic music]

[sighs]

Dad?

- Yeah, Bob. - I can't sleep.

Me either.

When's mom coming home?

I don't know, Bob. Soon, I hope.

Well, didn't she tell you?

Yeah, she did, but I think she changed her plans.

Why?

Um, maybe she got a new lead on her book.

What's a lead?

Um. New information.

- Um, like a clue or something? - Oh.

I hate that book. I wish she didn't have to write it.

Yeah, well, you know, she's not all that crazy

about you playing football either

but she knows you like it, so she lets you play it.

But at least I don't have to go to Florida for practice.

Yeah, but if you were a professional football player

you'd have to go all over the country to play.

But I'd call you every night to let you know I was okay.

Well, mom's going to call us just as soon as she can.

- Dad? - Yeah.

Are you worried about mom?

Yeah. A little.

You worried?

A little.

This is not a desk. This is a pigsty.

Now, where is that Langbar portfolio?

I had it in my hands two minutes ago

and it has disappeared. And what is going on here?

Why am I yelling at you?

You saved my life and this is how I thank you.

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. This has nothing to do with you.

- Maybe we should start over. - Good idea.

- Hi. - Hi.

I have your schedule for today.

[Paige] 'And?'

You've got an executive committee meeting at 2:00.

And then a conference with Lassner at 4:00.

And your lunch date is here.

- Lunch date? - Mm-hmm.

- Me. - Oh.

Hi, I'm your lunch date.

Don't remember? 1 o'clock, pizza at Giorgio's.

- I'm sorry Kate. - I put it in your calendar.

Yeah, well, I haven't looked at my calendar in two days.

Look, if you're busy, we can do it another day.

No, no, Alex..

...why don't you go get some sandwiches

from the store down the street?

Get me, um, a tuna on whole wheat and an iced tea.

- What do you want? - Um, uh, just the same.

But you'll get something and join us, right?

[Paige] 'Well, no, he doesn't have time. He's in a hurry.'

'You've got to get back here to help me'

'prepare for my committee meeting.'

Oh, and, Alex

bring back the change and a receipt.

Yes, ma'am.

[door closes]

[sighs]

What's that look for?

Because you're treating him like...

- Like.. - 'Like an assistant.'

Kate, that's what he is, and if you don't like that

you can find him another job.

I'm sorry.

[sighs] I'm yelling at you, too.

'Why am I taking this out on everyone?'

I don't know what you're taking. I don't know what you're mad at.

Nothing. Everything.

Uncle Greg?

Why would I be mad at him?

I mean, just because he ran off without telling me? So what?

We're adults. Any he can do whatever he wants.

Even if it includes my mother.

Your mother? She with him?

Yeah. Yeah, she went after him.

[chuckles] I mean, chasing after a man

who doesn't want to be chased.

You know what's going to happen?

He's going to send her back here with her

tail between her legs.

Then you have nothing to be worried about.

[sighs]

Well, it's just...

I mean, if she's so desperate, why doesn't she

take an ad out in the personals?

Why don't you?

Excuse me?

You're too special to spend the rest of your life alone.

[instrumental music]

Now, Mr. Sumner's straight on back through there.

Just keep walking straight and you'll find him.

Okay.

You want me to go with you?

Uh, in case you get lost.

[scoffs] I'm not gonna get lost.

Hey.

You forgot this.

'Enjoy yourself.'

[music continues]

- Hey. - Yeah.

Your dog ever heard of mouthwash?

I don't know what was worse last night.

Her breath or your snoring.

[engine starts]

[breathing heavy]

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Ah! Oh! Help!

Ah!

'Oh, I've hurt myself.'

Oh! Oh! Somebody!

'Does anyone hear me?'

'Huh? Oh! I'm hurt!'

'Please!'

Ah! Help!

Oh, my God!

Ah!

[Greg growls, Anne screams]

Ah! Oh, Greg!

Thank God you heard me.

Half the state of Montana heard you.

I fell over this log, I think I broke my ankle.

[Anne screams]

What are you doing here?

Thought you were going to the airport.

We didn't finish our discussion.

Ah.

Doesn't look broken. It's not even swollen.

And we did finish our discussion.

Well, the swelling wouldn't show yet.

You ran away from me.

That was a hint, babe. See if you can stand up.

Oh.

That was no hint. That was a hammer blow to the head.

[grunts]

Ah, don't be such a wimp.

You walked all the way over here.

Where'd you sleep last night?

In my sleeping bag.

With wild animals slobbering all over me.

Come on. Put some weight on it.

I can't. Oh.

Oh, just as long as I found you.

Oh. Oh.

See if you can walk on it, will you?

Oh, oh, I can't.

- You can't, huh? - No.

Oh, poor baby.

- Oh! - Oh. Oh, yes.

That's much better.

Oh! Ah! Oh!

[doorbell rings]

Mrs. MacKenzie. Oh, please.

If you don't leave, I'm going to call the police.

Please, Mrs. MacKenzie, I just want to talk to you.

I will not let you see Meg.

This isn't about Meg. It's about Laura.

She was my daughter, Mrs. MacKenzie.

I don't know a thing about her.

You said you were one of her best friends.

- So? - Mrs. MacKenzie..

Karen, please, I am begging you as one mother to another.

She was taken away from me when she was an infant.

I never got to know her.

Five minutes.

Thank you.

What would you like to know?

Anything. Everything.

Was she a good person? Was she happy?

She was a good person. She was a good friend.

She was...a good wife.

To Greg. I-I could see that.

I bet he misses her.

We all miss her.

You know, even as a baby, she had that..

...that quality.

She hardly ever cried.

And that social worker stole her

and sold her to that married couple out of state.

Well, they must have taken pretty good care of her

because she often talked about her happy childhood.

I'm glad.

'She deserved it.'

'Every child does.'

- Including Meg. - Especially Meg.

I don't want to take Meg away from you, Karen.

I just want to be a little part of her life.

'I'm sorry I scared you like that the other day.'

- 'That was unforgivable.' - Then why did you take her?

I saw her there in the playground.

I thought to myself, here she is.

That's your granddaughter.

'She had that red hair and Laura's smile and..'

[instrumental music]

I didn't even think about it.

All I could think of was, I wanted

to spend some time with her.

'I won't do that again.'

Do you..

Would you have a picture of Laura that I could see?

[music continues]

Why don't you..

...sit down for a few minutes and I'll get the pictures.

I have a few questions I'd like to ask you, too.

Fine.

[Mary] Oh, she's still had that smile, even as an adult.

She turned out alright, didn't she?

Yes.

In the time I knew her, she went from

being unsure of herself to a very strong, confident woman.

Look, um, I have to cut this short. I'm late for a meeting.

No, I'm the person who should apologize.

You've been very kind to me.

[knock on door]

Excuse me.

- Gary. - Hi, Karen.

Uh, can you take the twins? I'm going to Florida tonight.

[Karen] 'Well, yes, of course I can, but--'

[Gary] 'The police down there are useless.'

'I'm going to try and find her myself.'

They think she's just run away, for God's sake.

In the meantime, she could be hurt or--

I know I'm just scared out of my mind too.

Well, then you understand why I can't sit around

and do nothing. I'm going to try and retrace her steps.

- Well, let Mack go with you. - No, no.

I got to do this alone. I'll be fine. Don't worry.

I-I've just got to do something.

I'll call you once I get there.

- Okay. - Thanks.

[door closes]

Now, you don't have to worry just yet.

Sorry.

[clears throat] Because the Richfield account

'is still holding strong with assets..'

- Sorry. - '...well over $50 million.'

Where have you been?

[Mort] 'This, combined'

'with the Anderson Wilkinson Langford accounts will make..'

- Where's he going? - Florida.

[Mort] '...for a healthy profit in our'

Sumner Group investment portfolio.

As for our research and development program--

What do you mean she came over?

Uh..

'Research and development program--'

You let her in the house? Our house.

As you can see, our takeover of Burton Biotechnologies is--

I don't care what she told you.

Mack.

Do you mind?

Yes. Yes, I do mind.

- Mack. - What?

This is a joke. Pies, it's..

Uh, continue.

- Mack. - 'May I help you?'

- Mack. - 'One moment please.'

[Claudia] 'Why don't we do as Karen suggests?'

- Where are you going? - What? Going to the office.

My office. My law office.

- Why? - Why?

Because I'm a lawyer.

And because I couldn't care less about

pies and-and graphs and downward trends.

Because Frank went to visit Julie

and someone's got to mind the storm

because I'm a lawyer and I just want to do lawyer stuff.

What about Gary and-and Mary Robeson?

I don't care that Gary goes to Florida.

I'd do the same thing.

And you seem to be convinced

that Mary has Meg's interest at heart.

- No, I didn't say that. - No?

- I didn't say I was convinced. - Then what?

You let her in the house and she gives you a c*ck and bull story.

No, Mack, look, she lost a daughter.

You can't imagine what she's feeling

I can't believe you're buying into this.

I'm not buying into this.

I just, I don't know

I'm just confused.

She's creepy, Karen.

She's selling you a song and a dance.

- You didn't talk to her. - I don't want to talk to her.

And I don't want to talk about this here.

So go back to the meeting, take notes, vote my proxy

and we'll talk about the rest of it tonight when you get home.

- Mack. - Tonight.

[sighs]

Oof.

Well, I never thought I'd say this, but home sweet home.

Don't fall in love with it, because you're

going to be on a plane tonight.

How's the ankle?

Oh, it's better.

I thought it was the other leg.

Well, it's-it's both of them.

I'm just not used to this much walking.

Of walking? You rode up in a Jeep.

Yeah. The bumpiest ride of my life.

Well, nobody forced you to come up here.

You still don't want to talk about that, do you?

You know how I feel. The choice is yours.

This must be so easy for you.

Listen, you're lucky you still have a choice.

No, you're lucky I have a choice.

Or you'd have to admit that

you have a child that you have to take care of.

Look, if you want to have the baby, have the baby.

Just don't start calling me daddy.

[scoffs] How about I just don't call you? Period.

I'm sorry I wasted your time.

Let's face it, Anne. Fatherhood is not my thing.

Well, I didn't think motherhood was my thing either

but I did it with Paige. And I'll do it with this baby, too.

You don't want this child?

I won't tell anybody that you're the father.

But I thought you had the right to know.

I thought you had the right to be part of this baby's life.

This must be scary for you.

[inhales] Actually, it's terrifying.

[sighs]

[sighs]

I still have Paige's reaction to deal with.

The radio station and telling you.

I almost didn't come up here.

Now I'm sorry I did.

Greg..

...for once...be honest with me.

Don't be flip or sarcastic.

Have I made a total fool of myself?

- No. - Thank you.

You're welcome.

[telephone ringing]

It's dad.

No, his plane wouldn't have landed yet, buddy.

- Hello? - 'Mr. MacKenzie.'

- Speaking. - This is Toni Fields.

What can I do for you, Miss Fields?

I'm calling to inform you that I'm Mary Robeson's attorney.

She's interested in claiming visitation rights

to her granddaughter, Meg.

You're Mary Robeson's attorney?

She tell you about kidnapping my daughter?

Honey, let's go in the kitchen. Put these away.

[Toni] 'She told me everything.'

'And frankly, I wouldn't call spending the afternoon'

'with one's grandchild kidnapping.'

Let's cut out the razzle dazzle.

You're speaking to another attorney. What does Mary want?

I already told you. Visitation rights.

- Out of the question. - 'No, it isn't.'

Now we're going to talk about this.

Why should we?

Because I'd rather not take it to court.

Alright. When do you want to meet?

This Thursday alright for you, 7 o'clock?

Fine. My law office.

[Toni] 'I'll see you then.'

[slow dramatic music]

You're still confused about Mary, Karen?

She just hired a lawyer in order to get to see Meg.

[sighs]

[door opens]

[Alex grunts]

- 'Again?' - 'Mm-hmm.'

[Kate] 'Aren't you up to it?'

- Sure. - Huh? Are you not man enough?

- I'll show you who's man. - Well show me.

I'll pick something to show you. You know, I need this.

[Alex] 'Kate. Uh. Kate.'

- Huh? - Look.

Hi.

Huh.

I thought you were going to be out all night.

I know, I'm sorry, darling.

But I just had such an impossible day

I-I couldn't face an evening out.

Vanessa, does it ever occur to you

that our rooming together isn't working out?

No, of course not.

Paige hasn't told you when Anne's coming back, has she?

No.

It's occurred to me.

She'd better be back soon.

The station manager's going out of his mind.

Alex, could you unzip me, please?

I will.

'For example..'

...I have invited Alex to stay here for a while.

Brilliant.

It'll be fun having a man around.

Yeah, it will be fun.

But the idea was for Alex and me

to have the fun together. Just the two of us.

Absolutely. I can be so dense sometimes.

You're right. Of course.

I'm going to get my own flat straight away.

Good.

Just as soon as I get a paycheck..

'...or two.'

And therefore, we should give further consideration

to placing the Richfield portfolio into long term bonds

where the interest rate will yield..

[instrumental music]

[exhales]

[Greg] 'Pregnancy really becomes you.'

Well, we'll wait until my ninth month.

Then we'll see how much it becomes me.

Not as well as Laura, I bet.

Laura was very beautiful in her ninth month.

I guess I asked for that.

[fire crackling]

I never really had what it takes to be a father.

Even when I was one, I wasn't very good at it.

Especially with Mary Frances.

That's why I gave up Meg to the MacKenzies.

Because she'd be a lot better off there.

But I got to admit

I'm starting to wonder what it would have been like.

You just miss Meg and Mary Frances, that's all.

Yeah, I guess.

Well, I'm a firm believer in second chances.

Yeah. Me too.

So, what do you say? You, me and baby makes three?

[chuckles]

Well, you know, I'd love to have your support, Greg.

I'm not talking about support here. I'm talking about family.

Commitment.

Marriage.

Marriage?

Yeah. I think that would be the best thing for this kid.

So what do you say?

[chuckles]

You think I'm up here for the trees?

[chuckles]

[instrumental music on TV]

And while you're in Athens

I'll be with the Duke again in Scotland.

But, I don't know whether I'll go yet.

'Because another man's asked me to spend'

'the summer with him in Deauville.'

He owns a racehorse and he's very rich.

He's number 20. I mean number 21.

You're number 20.

[train horn blares on TV]

[instrumental music]

Mr. Flannagan, what are you doing?

Be quiet, Ariane. Be quiet.

Stupid movie.

Simple yet elegant, don't you think, Greg?

Nothing big. No more than a 100 people.

I'm going to have to start calling around.

I hope the country club is gonna be available for the reception.

We haven't even set a date yet.

Set a date. My schedule's flexible.

Mr. Sumner, I don't mean to interrupt

but what should I do about Miss Matheson's bags?

Leave them in the car. Let her take her home when she leaves.

Why don't you just leave them here?

I'm going to give notice at the apartment.

Then it'll be less stuff to move around when I move in here.

We're not even officially engaged yet.

I've got to call Paige.

No. Maybe I shouldn't tell her on the phone.

I'll invite her to dinner.

Let me be the first to congratulate

you on your engagement, sir.

Carlos, as far as anyone's concerned I'm still camping.

- Right? - Got it.

I heard he got back this morning.

Think he wants his company back?

Who wants what company back?

Mr. Sumner, that was a short vacation.

Sumner's back? When?

Where did you hear that he was back, Mort.

[Mort] 'Martha in accounting has a boyfriend'

who's a pilot who knows someone at the airport--

Is he at the ranch? Because we have to talk to him.

It's too soon for him to be back.

I mean, I didn't think he was coming back at all.

- 'Martha said--' - He knows about Mary Robeson?

Uh, she said her-her boyfriend--

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the company.

Probably just got tired of all those mosquitoes and bears.

The mechanic saw him and Anne Matheson.

- Greg and Anne? - Mm-hmm.

Look, I don't know about the rest of you

but I'm here to discuss the Richfield proposal.

Of course, dear.

Absolutely right.

Please. Shall we begin?

Uh, yeah. Paige and Claudia, do us a favor.

Take notes. Because if Sumner's back, then we've got to talk.

Yeah. This is very important. We know you'll understand.

The thing is, Martha said that

she thought that he might be back, but she wasn't sure.

[birds chirping]

[door closes]

[footsteps approaching]

Mr. Sumner, I'm sorry, I asked him to wait.

Okay. Why didn't you tell us about Mary Robeson?

- What about her? - Is she Laura's mother?

Yeah, she's Laura's mother.

She snatched Meg for the afternoon.

'Did you put her up to it?'

- Is Meg alright? - Yes.

Answer my question. Are you in cahoots with Mary Robeson?

I'm not in cahoots with anyone, Mack.

She wants visitation rights. She got herself a lawyer.

That's nonsense. She wants money. It's blackmail.

The woman's a convicted felon, you know.

- 'She just got out of prison.' - Prison?

Answer my question. Did you put her up to it?

Of course not.

- How much money does she want? - Mack?

I don't know, I haven't spoken to her.

I'm frightened. Will she hurt Meg?

I have no idea what she's going to do.

Why don't you let me take care of this?

You should have told us about her.

You're right, I should have.

Tell me she won't hurt Meg.

I can't tell you that, Karen.

I have no idea what she's going to do.

Okay.

File. File. File.

You have to research.

Um, hold for tomorrow.

- Ready for dinner? - Oh, just a second.

Uh, file.

File. Then you can go home.

Thanks.

Welcome back, Miss Matheson. I hope you have a nice dinner.

Thank you.

- Who was that? - My new assistant.

How did he know I'd been away?

Everyone knows you've been away.

You should know by now that there are no secrets

in Knots Landing.

[chuckles]

Well, I guess not.

- You know too. - Know what?

Don't be coy, Paige. It doesn't become you.

That Greg and I spent some time alone together.

You mean he took off and you chased him?

[chuckles] Well, believe me, he wasn't that difficult to catch.

Why don't you get to the point, mother?

I invited you to dinner because I have some very exciting news

I wanted to share with you.

What, you and Greg got matching tattoos?

Greg and I got engaged.

Engaged?

Yeah.

As in here comes the bride.

[scoffs]

Well, congratulations.

Thank you.

You may kiss me on the cheek if you like.

Are you kidding?

Look, Paige

I stepped aside when I thought Greg wanted you.

I can't help it if you dropped the ball.

Drop the ball?

What do you think this is, a football game?

I got Greg because I wanted him and I did something about it.

Let me ask you something.

Does love enter into this?

I told you, we're getting married.

But did he say, "I love you, Anne?

I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Anne?"

Why should I answer that?

Oh, don't be coy, mother. It doesn't become you.

Maybe dinner is a bad idea.

If you were planning on asking me

to be a maid of honor, it is.

I was going to ask somebody who'd be happy for me.

Like your creditors?

I'll cancel the reservation.

Good idea.

[door closes]

Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with us.

You know Mary, of course.

Yes we do.

Have a seat.

Mr. MacKenzie, I understand that

you'll be the attorney of record on this.

I think I should advise you that in accordance--

[Mack] 'Let me advise you of something, Miss Fields.'

How carefully have you looked into your client's past?

What are you getting at?

He means my prison record, Toni.

Mary has, of course, already told me about her history.

And you're still willing to take this case?

You're still willing to let this woman

spend time with an innocent seven year old child?

[Toni] 'Mrs. MacKenzie, Mary has fully'

convinced me that her past is her past--

Oh, I'm sure Mary has convinced you.

Mary can be very convincing when she wants to be.

- Karen, please. I told you-- - Don't call me Karen.

Don't presume you're my friend.

And don't you presume that you have a right to my child.

- Mrs. MacKenzie, if we-- - What do you want us to do?

Do you want us to just give our child to this woman

just because she has a sad story and can cry on cue?

Meg is my granddaughter.

- Her mother was stolen. - That's a lie.

- You're an unfit mother. - That is not for you to decide.

I didn't decide it. The court did.

Long before I knew her or Laura.

I thought we'd be able to talk this over like adults.

But I see that I was wrong.

[Mack] 'Forget this adult stuff.'

Let's talk about Meg's point of view.

She doesn't like being with Mary.

She doesn't like being around her.

Only because you brainwashed her against me.

[Toni] This meeting is pointless.

Since you do not wish to discuss any accommodations

I'm afraid we'll have to take you to court.

See you then, counselor.

[instrumental music]

[sighs] What are their chances?

Fair.

The chances are fair, but we won't let them win.

[instrumental music]

[music continues]

Okay, maybe I was overly optimistic about your reaction

but I can't do this without you.

Well, the last time I looked, it only took two to get married.

You know what I mean.

What, you want my blessing? Why?

Because I can't get married when I feel your

thundering disapproval every time I turn around.

Now you're being melodramatic, mother.

I could have married Greg.

I could have trapped him the way that you did.

But what I don't understand is why he wants to marry you.

Maybe you're not the great love of his life

that you think you are.

Well, maybe you held a g*n to his head

to get him to propose to you.

You know, the more I think about it, this has all the trappings

of a shotgun wedding.

No.

- Mother, you are too old. - I am not.

- I barely hit my stride. - Tell me it's not true.

Is it so impossible?

[scoffs]

You and Greg.

Well, before you went into the hospital

you know we were quite the item.

What about his vasectomy?

Well, I don't know what he told you

but this wasn't the Immaculate Conception.

And you want me to be happy for you?

Is that so difficult, darling?

Alright, mother.

I'm happy for you.

Congratulations and I wish you and Greg all the best.

Thank you.

Well, now that we have that all squared away

I guess I should be going.

Yes you should.

Maybe you'll have a cute little sister

you can tell all your secrets to.

What fun.

[door opens]

[shower spattering]

[Vanessa] 'Don't forget to wash it away.'

- I'm ticklish. - Really?

- Yeah. - Where else are you ticklish?

[Vanessa giggling]

[Alex] 'Vanessa, come on, stop.'

[gasps]

- It's, it's my fault. - I-I can explain.

I'm gonna be back in the morning.

I want the two of you out of here.

[sighs]

[door closes]

You've only been there a day, Gary.

Something will break. You've got to get some sleep.

Well, you call if you need anything here, okay?

I will, and take care of yourself.

Okay, buddy.

- Anything? - Nothing.

It's as though she disappeared into thin air.

- Gary's pretty frantic. - Oh, I don't blame him.

I don't know who to worry about more. Meg or Val.

It's too much going on right here.

We're going crazy trying to deal with it all.

How are we going to stop Mary Robeson?

She's got a criminal record and when the judge sees that

you know, think twice about letting her visit Meg.

Do you think it's going to go that far?

No.

We'll go see the lawyer and tell her the other side of the story.

Okay. Well..

What if she's not convinced and..

[slow dramatic music]

Then we go to court.

Oh, Mack.

That means we're going to have to tell Meg

about the adoption and..

...and right now..

I don't know.

She's just. She's so confused.

She's...she's so upset.

I know. I know.

What?

- Nothing. - Mack.

- Nothing. - Mack.

Hey, look, we were going to tell her on our terms.

- Remember? - Yeah.

Nobody was going to force us into telling

if we weren't ready.

I'm still not ready to tell her.

[music continues]

Well, she's going to have to find out sooner or later.

Not now. Not like this.

I know.

Your heart's beating a mile a minute.

So is yours.

Maybe because I'm scared.

Maybe because I'm scared too.

[door opens]

[music continues]

[grunts]

[sobs]

[sighs]

[gasps]

What do you say, Mar?

I think we have to talk.

[theme music]
