[door shuts]

So how was Florida?

Productive.

You didn't tell anyone we were back?

Not yet.

I'm waiting to see if your information

was worth getting up this early.

- It is. - It's all in the deposition.

Mary Robeson is not Laura's mother.

[Gary] 'She was her aunt.'

[Mack] 'Laura's real mother died in childbirth.'

The woman who handled Laura's adoption read an obituary

for Mary Robeson, which sent up a red flag

because she already knew that Mary was dead.

And she's willing to swear to it in court.

She still has the original adoption papers

as well as the death certificate for Mary Robeson

dated over 40 years ago.

Mary's real name was Loretta.

[Mack] 'She and Joe were in it for the money.'

They were gonna get it from either Sumner, Karen or me.

[Gary] 'Yeah, but Val stopped off at the adoption agency'

'on the way to the airport.'

Joe knew once Val discovered the truth

the scam would be over.

So he had his friend Jack Belarus kidnap Val

just to keep her quiet, so when Mary got the money

he k*lled her for it. So you gotta go after him.

We did. We got him.

That's great.

He's not admitting anything.

So what are you gonna do, arrest me for jumping bail?

Who said you jumped bail?

I just told you.

Gary was in Florida. No one else knew you were gone.

- Tom.. - Don't thank me yet, Mack.

You're still being charged with Mary's m*rder.

Now this, this may prove that the Robesons were con artists

but it doesn't prove that Joe k*lled Mary.

Sorry, Mack. You're not off the hook yet.

[exhales sharply]

[theme music]

[music continues]

[music continues]

[engine idling]

[indistinct chatter]

- 'Hi!' - Oh, hi.

Hi, Meg. Okay, you guys got everything?

- Yup. - Okay. Backpacks, great.

Okay, bye. I'll be here when you get back.

Bye, guys. Have a good day.

[engine revving]

Hi, Katie.

Morning. Hi, mom.

I didn't realize you were the twins' new nanny.

I'm not their nanny. I'm just helping out Gary a bit.

Oh, I see, does, uh, helping out

include comforting Gary during his time of grief?

What does that mean?

Did you spend the night with him?

- Mother.. - Is that a yes or no?

That's, uh.. It's none of your business.

Katie, look, I don't mean to pry.

It's just that I'm concerned.

I don't wanna see you hurt, honey.

Look, I thought we had a deal.

You wouldn't lecture me about my romantic involvements

if I didn't lecture you on yours.

How well do you know Gary? Really.

- Really? - Mm-hmm.

Well, I know him well enough to know

that he's not gonna hurt me.

[scoffs] Do we ever really know anyone that well, hm?

I gotta go.

Just be careful, okay?

[sighs] Okay.

See you later.

I love you.

[engine revving]

[instrumental music]

Hi.

Hi.

How's Meg?

Angry that you didn't tell her you were going away.

Yeah, well, I couldn't.

Because you knew I'd stop you?

[sighs] Karen, I had to go.

Tom Ryan found out you skipped bail.

Yeah. I know.

He's not gonna arrest me for skipping bail.

Why not?

Because I came back and turned myself in

and because he understands why I had to go.

That blue shirt in the laundry?

Blue shirt? I-I don't think so. Why?

I have to go out.

It's something I have to do.

You just got here.

I have an appointment.

[door shuts]

[door opens]

Enjoy your freedom now, Joe, while it lasts.

Detective, are you threatening my client?

Don't worry about it, Andy. He's just blowing smoke.

We know you k*lled your sister.

That's enough. Come on, Joe.

[Joe] Mack MacKenzie k*lled my sister.

Oh, yeah, then why don't you show

a little more grief for her death?

Are you badgering my client?

I'm not badgering your client.

I'm asking him a question.

Which he doesn't have to answer.

Mary was behind this whole scam, wasn't she?

No scam. She just wanted the right to see her grandchild.

No. Her grand niece. Mary was not Meg's grandma.

Alright, that's enough. This conversation stops right here.

Joe, get in the car.

I can arrest your client for extorting money

from the MacKenzies and for conspiracy

in the Valene Ewing kidnapping.

If you had proof of any of this, he'd still be in jail.

Come on, Joe. You didn't do this alone.

You're too stupid to hire a good lawyer and get away with m*rder.

Gee, detective, I think I'm insulted.

I'm filing a complaint with your captain.

Who's behind this? Tell me who's behind this.

Maybe you and I can work out a deal.

No one is behind anything, and maybe I'm not as stupid

as you think I am.

[door shuts]

[engine starts]

[engine revving]

[indistinct chatter]

He showed up 30 minutes ago.

Not a word.

[exhales sharply] I don't know.

I-I'll-I'll talk to him. I..

I-I'm sure it'll be fine. It'll be a relief, actually.

Oh, here he is. Ask him yourself.

It's, uh, Paige. She wants to talk to you.

I haven't got time.

Paige, I'll call you back.

Bye.

[receiver clacks]

[sighs]

Greg Sumner called while you were in the shower.

Well, am I supposed to jump up and down?

He wants our share of the Sumner Group.

Fine. Whatever.

Then Paige called. She said not to give them to him.

She wants them herself.

Okay.

I think we should talk to Paige. There's a lot to discuss.

Fine.

[Mack] 'I'll be back in time for dinner.'

- Mack.. - Karen, I'm already late.

And your appointment is more important than us?

- What about us? - My God!

If this has something to do with the Sumner Group--

The Sumner Group? What is happening to you?

What's happening is that I'm trying to save my life!

And I'm trying to save it with you!

[Mack] 'I haven't got time to talk about it now.'

'We'll talk about it tonight.'

[engine revving]

Mack!

[engine revving]

You found out why Val died?

Mack didn't tell you?

Tell me.

Mary Robeson was not Laura's mother.

She was her aunt.

And Val was about to find this out.

[exhales sharply]

Joe knew Jack Belarus.

He had Belarus follow Val.

When Val stopped off at the adoption agency

on her way to the airport

he knew she was sitting on a time b*mb.

So Joe had Belarus kidnap her.

Mack never told me any of this.

Not one word.

[birds chirping]

[engine revving]

[suspenseful music]

[door shuts]

Over. I did it.

What exactly is it that you did, Joe?

k*ll your sister? Steal marked money? Huh?

That was not part of the plan.

Yeah, but it screwed it up more for the MacKenzies.

[Nick] 'Yeah, and for yourself.'

I did not enjoy having to hire a lawyer

to bail you out of jail.

Will you just relax?

Mary and I did what you wanted. We pursued that custody thing.

We made the MacKenzies crazy.

It won't be long before they're out of the Sumner Group.

[Nick] Perhaps.

I just wish you didn't have to k*ll anybody to do it.

I didn't mean to.

'My greedy sister wouldn't share the half a million with me.'

Joe, Joe, what a short memory you have.

Nobody was supposed to keep the money.

You were both supposed to bring it back to me, correct?

Yeah.

We got a little carried away.

You're still gonna pay me?

I was told to pay you

half of what we agreed.

Half?

[music continues]

What can I tell you?

You take orders from me, I take them from somebody else.

It's a tough world, my friend.

What about my plane ticket?

One way to Paris, France. Enjoy it.

Coach? You're flying me coach?

I didn't make the arrangements, pal.

But maybe you'd like to negotiate that with my boss.

Never mind.

Wise decision.

[sighs]

Bueno fortuna, scemo.

Don't spend it all at the track.

[door shuts]

[engine starts]

[engine revving]

[engine revving]

Buona fortuna yourself.

What does a person have to do to get some service around here?

Anna! Ciao! What a pleasant surprise!

Are you expecting a guest for lunch?

No, no. You're not open anyway.

Closed on Mondays. Hey, but I can open for you.

- Would you like something? - Nothing.

I just came to thank you for the wine.

Greg and I had it last night. It was really good.

I am so glad.

Would you like another one from the cellar?

[chuckles] No.

Where's Vanessa?

Um, she's at lunch.

Why didn't you tell me you knew her?

[chuckles] Because I didn't know you knew her.

She was my assistant at the radio station.

I see. A very small world.

Yes, very.

Anna, would you like to tell me what's wrong?

Nothing's wrong.

Then why do you look so unhappy?

I'm not unhappy.

[scoffs] I just thought being Mrs. Greg Sumner

was gonna be a little more fun.

Like when you and I were together?

You and I did not have that much fun, Nick.

[chuckles] Anna, why are you taking your anger out on me?

Why not? I don't have anybody else to take it out on.

Greg's never around.

The task force must keep him very busy.

He quit the task force.

He did?

Yeah. He wants to go back to the Sumner Group.

Hm.

He thinks he can just snap his fingers

and get everything back.

Would you please allow me to prepare lunch for you? Huh?

I'll cook, you'll eat, we'll talk, and you'll feel better.

I won't feel better.

Anna, come on. Dai. Huh?

[exhales sharply]

Heavy on the garlic.

But of course.

[speaking in foreign language]

They haven't dropped the charges against me

but it looks like Joe Robeson k*lled Mary and took the money.

Was he placed at the scene?

I don't know yet, but Gary Ewing and I

connected him to the death of Gary's wife in Florida.

So it's just a matter of time before the Tallahassee police

puts out a warrant for his arrest.

You know, I'm sorry about this. I feel partly responsible.

Hey, it's not your fault.

She used you just like she used Karen and I.

- So what are you gonna do now? - I don't know.

- Then why did you ask me here? - What?

You made this appointment. I'm here. Why?

[chuckles] Oh, right. Sit down.

I wanna offer you a job.

- A job? - Yeah. I need an associate.

If things work out, I'll make you a partner.

But I thought you already had a partner.

Frank Williams? He's in Chicago teaching law.

He wants to be by his daughter.

What do you say?

Mack, I'm flattered. But why me?

You're a good attorney.

Mary didn't have a case, and you made one.

- You rewrote the law on one. - And look what it cost you.

That's why I want you on my side from now on.

- What? - I'm just wondering.

About?

About whether you're crazy or smart.

[chuckles] My wife would probably say I'm crazy.

Well, I would say that you're probably a little bit of both

which is why you're such a good attorney.

Thank you.

Well, it's not a big firm to be. You, me and Peggy.

Pay stinks and there are no benefits.

But we only take on cases that we care about

and every once in a while we win one.

How could I say no?

Say yes.

- He's what? - It's only a rumor.

Rumors get started because there is a grain of truth to them.

When is all this supposed to happen?

My friend at the task force

said he's already left.

Oh! And his reasons?

Uh, well, he didn't like it there.

What does that mean? Don't answer that.

Did your friend mention what Greg's future plans are?

This is third-hand information, you know

'it's probably not accurate.'

She heard it from somebody in business affairs

who heard it from somebody in human resources

'who spoke to someone at business affairs--'

- Mort! - He's coming back here.

Over my dead body.

My friend said that the old man, mm

Mr. Sumner said

"Well, if that's what it takes.."

[doorbell ringing]

- Claudia? - Hi. Karen..

May I just come in for a minute?

'Cause I-I really wanna just clear the air here

once and for all.

Ah.

Claudia, look, it's late

and, uh, I've gotta start dinner for Megs--

Karen, we're neighbors.

We can't avoid each other forever.

No, uh, we can't

but maybe you can come back another time.

[door opens]

Mack. Good. I, uh, I wanted to talk to you, too.

- I wanted to apologize. - Yeah?

Forget it.

You don't even know what I'm gonna apologize ab--

You got more than one thing?

I would like to explain about the money.

- You admit taking the money? - May I start at the beginning?

Hey, look, it's a simple yes or no.

Did you take the half a million dollars or not?

And then set me up as the fall guy?

Mack, uh..

I would never do anything deliberately to hurt you.

What can I say to make you believe that?

You can start by explaining why Paige noticed

a million dollars missing from the foundation.

Uh, I-I don't wanna say anything bad about Paige.

I know that she has done

some wonderful things for the company.

- But? - She's never liked me.

She's jealous of my relationship with Greg.

She'd do anything to get me out of the company.

Ah, well, l-look, we just put all that behind us.

If we, if we could work together, I know that we could

make the Sumner Group better than ever.

What's really going on here?

Sumner wants his company back, doesn't he?

Well, what, what have you heard?

He wants us to give our shares back.

[sighs] And, uh, you told him..

Told him we'd think about it. Now, if you don't mind..

Look, Karen, uh, Mack, uh, I already told you

I, I was going to give you the full million

but I changed my mind.

I decided to only give you half a million

put the other half back into her account.

[Claudia] 'M-maybe it wasn't the right decision'

and for that, I apologize.

Whenever you're ready to talk, please just..

...just give me a call, please.

[door shuts]

[sighs] She's worried..

'...about Greg coming back.'

Well, that's her problem, not mine.

- Did Tom Ryan call? - No.

But why are you changing the subject?

Why can't you just deal with the matter at hand?

Because there's nothing to deal with.

Why didn't you tell me about Val?

- I did. - 'No, you didn't.'

Well, I thought I did.

[both laughing]

And those briefcases, remember?

We could have gotten ourselves k*lled!

Yeah, or could have become very, very rich.

Man, do you ever wonder what our lives would be like

if we'd held on to all that money?

- Hm? - Sometimes.

[laughs] But I have money now, so it doesn't matter.

But clearly the money doesn't make you happy.

Does, too.

Oh, look at the time. Oh, I've gotta go.

- Greg will worry. - Wait.

I thought he was too busy to be worried.

[chuckles] Well, it's my little fantasy, Nick. Let me run with it.

Well, please, by all means.

So Greg will be very worried. And?

And he doesn't like to have to wait for his dinner.

Mm-hmm.

It's always by candlelight, with classical music playing

and then, afterwards we sit by the fire

and, well, we don't talk, you know?

We just.. Oh, Nick, I'm gonna be sick.

[laughs] Maybe he'll change his mind

about going back to the Sumner Group.

Yeah, and maybe pigs will sprout wings and learn how to fly.

Oh-h*, come on, Anna.

Stop being Mr. Sensitive.

He hasn't touched me in weeks.

What a fool.

I keep telling him that.

[instrumental music]

Anna, you know, you don't have to sit

in front of that fire by yourself.

Mn-mn-mn. No, no, no, Nick. No.

- 'Heh.' - My fault. Heh.

But thanks anyway.

[chuckles] We did have fun, didn't we?

[both chuckling]

[music continues]

[Nick sighs]

And did you have fun, Nick?

Of course.

Were you in love with her?

[laughs] Oh, come on. In love? No.

Are you still?

- I said no. - Poor Nick.

[sighs]

Mommy, you overslept.

Yeah, I know.

Didn't get much sleep last night.

Where's daddy?

Left for work.

You're still mad at him, huh?

Oh, Meg.

[bus honking]

It's my bus. I have to go.

About daddy, honey..

Why are you guys so mad at each other?

I, I don't know.

You know we're not mad at you.

Then why did he break his promise and go away again?

Daddy is under a, um..

[click tongue] ...a lot of pressure.

Do you understand?

[bus honking]

I have to go.

I love you.

I know.

[telephone ringing]

MacKenzie Law Office.

Hi, Peggy, it's me.

- Is Mack there? - No, not yet. Uh..

- Do you wanna leave a message? - No. Just tell him I called.

I will. Um, hey, while I have you on the line..

Let me ask you something.

[Peggy on phone] 'Do you think a party for Toni is a good idea?'

- Toni? - Toni Fields.

You know, to welcome her to the law office

as Mack's new associate.

Um, I've.. I don't know.

Um, yeah, sure, sure. I think that's a great idea.

[Peggy] 'I think so, too.'

Well, you just call me if you need any help.

I will. And I'll tell Mack you called. Bye, Karen.

[instrumental music]

[busy tone]

[aircraft droning]

[engine revving]

Excuse me. Are you finished?

Are you okay?

Sir?

[screams]

[woman gasps]

[indistinct radio chatter]

I don't know.

I pulled open the door and he just fell out.

[Tom] Joe was on his way to the airport.

Looks like he stopped here and put in a call to his bookie.

He still had the guy's phone number in his hand.

Also, we found a one-way ticket to Paris in his pocket.

This looks like a simple mugging to me, Tom.

And the guy shot with a Saturday night special.

His money, his credit cards removed from the wallet.

Yeah, but you know this guy was a suspect

in the Mary Robeson m*rder.

What about Mack MacKenzie?

He's not a k*ller.

Oh, you just now decide that?

We had evidence against him that--

You still have evidence against him.

I thought I could use Mack to flush out Joe Robeson.

- Ah. And now Robeson's dead. - Exactly.

It's not a coincidence either.

- He must have known something. - Know what?

You tell me.

Okay, look. Let's, uh, let's do ourselves a favor here.

Let's call Robeson a mugging victim

and let's close the book on this, okay?

- What about MacKenzie? - Drop the charges.

[chuckles] Hell, you never thought he was guilty, did you?

- No. I thought you did. - No, not for a minute.

Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore.

Mack's not going to trial for m*rder.

Are you sure of that?

What? He wasn't supposed to die.

Yes, you promised me.

What? No. No. He would not have talked.

Hey! Hello?

[speaking in foreign language]

Trouble?

[sighs] Joe Robeson was m*rder*d.

- Unexpectedly? - Unexpectedly, of course.

Is his death a problem?

Anything unexpected is a problem, Vanessa.

And anything that is a problem for me is a problem for you

especially if it brings your friend Treadwell

'into the picture.'

I was only asking.

Of course. I'm-I'm sorry.

Would you just please answer the phone?

[telephone ringing]

Nick's. May I help you?

[thuds]

[Vanessa] 'Yes.'

Of course. What time?

...and one.

- That's wrong. - What do you mean that's wrong?

You don't know how to do math.

I never learned how to do that. What are they doing?

Trying to teach you how to build spaceships?

No.

[telephone ringing]

Well, that's too bad.

You could build one in the backyard

and fly us to the moon. Hello?

Karen, this is Tom. Is, uh, Mack home?

[Karen on phone] 'No, he's, uh, he's at work. You can call him there.'

Well, you may wanna give him the news personally.

[Tom on phone] 'The charges against him have been dropped.'

You're kidding.

I wouldn't kid about something like that.

- Well, what happened? - Well..

The DA feels we don't have a strong-enough case against him.

And, uh, off the record, I know he didn't do it.

Thank you, Tom. Thank you.

[chuckles]

Ah! Honey, I gotta go see daddy at the office.

Could you run next door for a little while?

Mm-hmm.

I wondered how long it would take you to ask.

- What do you mean? - You did me a favor.

Now it's my turn to do you a favor, right?

Do you know how much I love your intelligence?

Oh. It's not intelligence. It's realism.

So, what's the favor?

Well, I would like you

to open a new investment portfolio.

And the name of the new client

will be Edward Messinger.

When do I get to meet this Mr. Messinger?

He's very shy

but he has signed all the necessary documents.

[paper rustling]

If I don't get to meet this Mr. Messinger

how do I know that, uh, this is his signature?

You have my word.

[laughs] Of course, that means nothing to me.

Of course.

And this is the money

Mr. Messinger will use to open his account.

Oh, my.

Doesn't look dirty.

You don't need to worry about that.

It will be very clean

by the time Mr. Messinger decides

to remove it from his account.

[briefcase shuts]

It's not the right time for this, Nick.

Paige has me under a microscope.

Greg is threatening to come back to the company

and Karen and Mack are watching me.

All the more reason to open this account as soon as possible.

Is there something in this for me?

[chuckles]

You are returning a favor.

That's for the half a million dollars I gave you.

And, uh, you will sleep better..

...knowing we are all even.

Mm.

I'll open the account in the morning.

Tonight would be better.

Mr. Messinger is very anxious

to have the Sumner Group invest his money.

Tonight. Of course.

Thank you.

[suspenseful music]

[door opens]

[door shuts]

Sure I miss Frank.

And he's gotta be by his daughter.

- Can't blame him for that. - So you guys were friends?

- As well as partners? - Sure.

Did you talk to him about the visitation suit?

- Or the m*rder charges? - No.

Otherwise he'd be out here trying to help me.

- What's wrong with that? - Mm..

Too many people around trying to tell me

what to do and how to do it.

Lately, I just wanna be left alone.

- You ever feel like that? - Sure.

All the time.

Yeah? That's how I feel.

But I never seem to get this time alone.

I mean, especially at home.

But that's what marriage does.

Takes away your privacy.

[door opens]

Karen.

I came by to tell you the charges have been dropped.

[instrumental music]

Karen.

Karen.

[keyboard keys clacking]

[computer beeping]

[suspenseful music]

[computer beeping]

[paper rustling]

[number pad clacking]

[sighs] It's Claudia.

Yes. Mission accomplished.

So, now that we've exchanged favors

we're free to be friends again.

I'd love to see you tonight.

My place. Fine.

See you then.

[receiver clacks]

[computer beeps]

[music continues]

[switch clicks]

- Ah, Kate, I'll do that. - Oh, no, I got it.

But don't you think you guys should get started

on your homework?

Yeah.

Dad, is it okay if we do it down here with you?

Sure, I guess so. Maybe I can help.

Hey, if it's spelling, I'm great with spelling.

And I made these brownies

so you guys can have them when you're done.

I'll put them on the coffee table.

- Mm. - Is Kate staying?

I don't know.

- I think she is. - Looks that way.

How long? Forever?

No, Betsy, not forever.

I don't think.

[cutlery clanking]

We were just talking. It didn't mean anything.

What didn't mean anything, talking to Toni

or feeling marriage takes away from your privacy?

Both. I mean, neither.

They were just words fillin' in space.

Don't make this worse than it already is.

You were talking to her, you were telling her

how you feel, what you want.

- So w-what's wrong with that? - Nothing. Everything.

You've cut me out completely. You don't talk to me at all.

- She doesn't judge me. - She's not married to you.

She doesn't have the same emotional investment in you li--

What do you want me to do, clear everything with you first?

Just talk to me, just sit down

and have a normal conversation with me.

We used to be able to do that. We used to do that all the time.

You leave in the middle of the night.

You don't tell me you're going, never mind where you're going.

- I left a note. - Telling me not to worry.

How can you tell me not to worry?

And it worked out, didn't it?

You don't tell me about the money

from the Sumner Group, and then I hear from Peggy

Peggy that-that Toni Fields is working at your office.

What, you want me to clear it with you?

No, just tell me about it in the course of conversation!

We don't have conversations.

- We have arguments. - Mack.

It's true! We argue about everything.

- Nothing's ever simple. - It's not true.

It is true. We're arguing right now.

We're arguing right now because everything you've done

you've done without telling me.

- And this is the reason why! - I don't wanna argue with you.

- I wanna understand you. - What's to understand?

I'm a simple guy who wants to protect his family.

I don't know you anymore. Nobody does.

What do you want me to say? I'm sorry? I'm sorry.

It sounds like you don't even know what you're sorry for!

That's right, I don't. What did I do that was so wrong?

- I borrowed money-- - You stole money.

To pay off some woman who was posing as Meg's grandmother.

- I set up a sting operation-- - That backfired.

That would've put her in prison.

- That put you in jail instead. - You see what I mean?

- Nothing I do is right. - And you don't even know why!

That's right. I don't.

But if you want me to apologize, I apologize.

I don't want you to apologize.

I want you to be the man I married.

And I want the woman I married, not an inquisition.

Is that what you think this is?

- An inquisition? - Yeah.

Yeah, that's what I think.

Well, you're wrong.

[scoffs] I..

[chuckles]

[door shuts]

[operatic song on stereo]

[sighs]

[knocking on door]

[drink sloshing]

It's open.

[crickets chirping]

- Buonasera. - 'Buonasera.'

[door shuts]

The Messinger account

is ready and open for business.

So you said on the phone. And?

Sit down.

[song continues]

[Claudia chuckles]

[sighs]

Did you know that no red lights went off

when I put that money into the computer?

No sirens, no Paige appearing over my shoulder

pointing a finger at me saying, "I accuse."

[chuckles] I didn't think that would happen.

Hm. Tell me something, Nick.

What would you have done

if I refused your request to launder that money, hm?

I would have been so disappointed.

Oh.

And when you're disappointed?

Tsk. I'm not at my best.

And when you're not at your best?

I don't like this conversation, cheri.

I don't like being used.

I do.

Oh?

Yes, by you.

Mm. In that case, get used to it.

I may have to use you often.

Please do.

Mm.

I may have to use your power to hold on to my power.

- What power are you talking-- - Shh, shh.

I don't know what power you have, but you have it.

And I want you to use it for me.

"...eats three square meals a day.

He is usually full after dinner. The end." Looks good to me.

Okay, you guys, get upstairs and get your pajamas on

and I'll be up to kiss you goodnight.

- And read us a book, too? - And read you a book, too.

- Goodnight, Kate. - Goodnight. Here's your book.

- 'You can't catch me.' - 'Wait up, Betsy.'

[Betsy and Bobby laughing]

[Kate sighs]

- Mm.. - Alone at last.

Kate, the kids might come back down.

So?

Well, they don't know about it yet.

Betsy still thinks her mother's coming back.

Maybe it's time you talk to her about it.

I have talked to her about it.

She has to do this in her own way, in her own time.

So what are you saying, that we have to have

a closet relationship?

Which is fine with me.

Which closet?

Kate, come on.

Oh, my. He wants me to be serious. Okay.

I'm serious.

[sighs]

You're a terrific girl

and you've been great with the twins.

"You've been?" What's this been?

[sighs] It's just movin' too fast.

[instrumental music]

So I understand. When roll in the hay does not--

That was not just a roll in the hay.

Then what would you call it?

- Ah. Why do I do this? - Uh, look.

- You didn't do anything wrong. - No.

I just jumped to the wrong conclusion.

It wasn't the wrong conclusion exactly.

So what, the right conclusion is

uh, we slept together, it was nice?

So where are we now?

I don't know.

Gary, just tell me what you want.

[sighs]

I don't know.

You don't know?

[music continues]

The bottom line is

'you don't know where we are, you don't know what you want.'

So I'm just gonna take that as my guideline.

Kate..

...my wife died.

[Gary] 'I miss her.'

'I still mourn her.'

I'm still in love with her.

[instrumental music]

And until that ends..

...I can't commit to anybody right now.

Got it.

[sighs] Kate.

[door opens]

Kate.

Kate, please. I'm-I'm sorry.

[Bobby] 'Dad, we're ready.'

[door shuts]

'Dad? Are you coming, dad?'

Karen.

I left you a plate of pancakes in the kitchen.

Where are you goin'?

I can't do this anymore.

Can't do what?

You know what.

I can't live in this house

while you're lying to me and keeping secrets.

I explained everything.

You didn't explain it to me in a way that made sense.

Well, it'll never make sense

because you only see everything from your point of view.

- That's not fair. - Yeah?

You know, just once I wanted to make a decision on my own

about my family, my way.

This wasn't about you, Mack.

It was also about Meg and me.

This was the biggest crisis we've ever been through..

...and you shut me out.

[Karen] 'And now that it's all over, you're keeping me out.'

I can't live that way.

I'm taking Meg and we're going to New York.

We're gonna stay with Diana.

[car approaching]

How long are you gonna be there?

[car honking]

That's my cab.

Mom, the taxi's here.

Yeah, honey. I know. I'll be out in a minute.

This time I'm going away, daddy, and you have to wait for me.

[instrumental music]

[door shuts]

[music continues]

[engine revving]

Oh, Karen.

[music continues]

[birds chirping]

[theme music]

[music continues]

[instrumental music]
