Those three will show their line in Olympus Fashion Week.

Then one winner will be chosen.

The winner will receive a spread in Elle Magazine,

a mentorship with Banana Republic design team

and $100,000 to start their own line.

The first challenge is about innovation.

Welcome to your first challenge.

These are your supplies.

[Wendy] Is Mario smarter than me

because he bought a shower curtain

and he made it in 15 minutes?

[Kara] My model is not here.

[Mario] Go to the street and go get a model.

[Kara] Excuse me.

[Morgan] No. He just-- he just dropped me. [crying]

Welcome to the Runway,

where your first challenge will be judged.

[upbeat music playing]

[Heidi] We have made our decision.

The winner is Austin.

That means that you’re safe for the next challenge.

[Nina] Wendy,

I just wish I would have seen more clothes.

[Wendy] Was standing up there with the garment

that I actually did not feel I could defend.

I don’t want that to happen again.

I’ll tell you that.

[Starr] Didn’t have any confidence in myself.

I thought I was gonna go home.

[Heidi] Daniel is out.

[theme music playing]

This is a search

for the next big fashion designer.

[Jay] This is a cutthroat business.

[Kara] The competition was fierce.

[Heidi] 12 contestants, three finalists...

and one winner.

Three designers will make their Runway debut

at Olympus Fashion Week.

[woman] I plan to make it to Fashion Week.

[man] I think I’ll be number one.

[Heidi] And the winner of Project Runway

will receive everything they need

to start their own label.

[woman] I think I deserve to win.

People are gonna start getting pretty bitchy.

-Oh, my. -For these 12 contestants,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] I didn’t have enough time to get to know Daniel.

So, when Daniel left, it was just kind of, like,

"Hey, see, I’m going back to LA."

Daniel is from a different planet maybe,

the planet LA.

He always had, like, jazz fingers.

This elimination will change everything.

It is gonna be tough this time around

to see somebody out.

[Starr] At the last elimination,

I thought I was gonna be going home.

I love fashion design and it just--

it makes me so happy to do it.

Since I’ve been here away from my job,

I’ve had this opportunity to just think about

what I’m doing with my life.

[Austin] I feel great and it is a relief

to know that, you know,

I will be "immune" as they call it.

For this next competition,

I cannot be eliminated

since I won the last.

But I still want to win every competition.

[dramatic music playing]

Are you all ready for your next challenge?

-[all] Yes. -[Heidi] Good.

This challenge is all about vision.

You will all start from the same place.

Plain, white cotton.

The official fabric of Project Runway.

You will each work with a bolt of white cotton fabric

to design an outfit.

Your guiding inspiration for the design

in one word...

envy.

Envy.

[Austin] Of course, I am getting started to rack my brain

for what on earth I should come up with

or what envy meant to me.

[Heidi] And your outfit must reflect this theme.

You now know the challenge.

Let’s move on to the models.

You know how important a model is.

So, you should pick the right model

to get you through the next challenge.

Let’s bring out the models.

[Kara] It’s really getting more important for Heidi

to pull your name out of the bag first,

because everybody wants the same models.

Martinique, Olga, and Melissa.

But I will never choose Morgan again.

I don’t care how great she walks.

She was still obviously...

-Morgan? -Yeah.

This is really bad.

[Heidi] I just wanna say to the models

that this is a competition for you as well.

There’s 12 models on stage now

and there are 11 designers left.

One model will have to go.

In the end, the model paired

with the winner of Project Runway

will receive an exclusive fashion spread

in Elle Magazine.

[Melissa] Elle Magazine is a huge magazine.

That would be like a dream to be in it.

Our last challenge was won by Austin.

So, Austin gets to pick his model first.

This time,

I think I would like to work with Martinique.

Yeah.

[laughs] I got Austin. I got Austin.

[Heidi] The next one is Mario.

-Olga. -Yeah. [laughs]

[Mario] She has this don’t [bleep] with me kind of attitude

that I just love.

Robert.

That will be you, Melissa.

[Morgan] I’m nervous. I was late.

So, you know, the designers think

that I’m not gonna be professional

and they probably don’t wanna work with me.

[Heidi] The next one is Wendy.

-Erin. -Joy.

Audrey.

[Heidi] Next one to choose their model is Vanessa.

[tense music playing]

I pick my big strong walker, Morgan.

[laughs] Thank you.

[Vanessa] I chose Morgan.

I don’t care if she’s late,

she’s really good on the runway.

And she only has to get that two minutes

before I need her.

[sighs]

Jay.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe,

catch a model by the toe.

Alison.

Rock on.

Kevin.

Jenny.

[Heidi] There’s only one button left

and that is Kara.

And there’s two models left on the stage,

Josiane...

and Mary.

One will get eliminated.

Kara?

[tense music playing]

Josiane,

do your job, girl.

Yes.

[applause]

[Mary] I felt awkward standing up there

and I just let it go and say

I just wasn’t right for that person.

Sorry, you’re out.

[speaking foreign language]

[Tim] Good morning, everyone,

and welcome to your second challenge.

What you see roaming around the room

and wrapped around everything is cotton jersey.

This fiber is your blank canvas.

Heidi gave you the word envy.

You need to be creative

and think about how you can project envy

into that canvas.

We are very, very pleased to have Linda DeFranco,

who is the director of the trend forecasting

for Cotton Incorporated here with us today.

Linda?

Come in.

[Linda] Good morning, everybody.

Cotton is the perfect fiber to dye for color.

So, you can really morph it into anything that you choose.

So, I would definitely say good luck

and I look forward to seeing the end product.

[Tim] All right, everyone.

Grab your scissors, start cutting.

[Wendy] I know everybody wants to do

an equal amount of fabric.

I have a small business in a small town in Virginia.

I just don’t have that many opportunities

that are gonna come to me like this.

I think we should agree

that everybody gets at least four and a half yards.

Wendy’s our den mother.

[Jay] If you have that combination in a group,

it makes the whole group dynamic,

a lot more unified.

But we should get the people with short dresses to cut first.

-Okay. -[Wendy] It’s 57 yards.

Everything I do in this competition

is strategic.

I know that exploiting my role as a mother

is kind of evil, truly.

But if it’s gonna help me get to the end,

you can believe that I’m going to do it.

I need as much as I can get.

[Tim] You have until midnight tonight

and you have two hours tomorrow.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

[man] Can I have a few pages?

[upbeat music playing]

[Wendy] After Tim met with us,

he then said we were going to go on a little field trip

and we had $50 and one hour

to buy everything we needed for this dress.

Okay?

[rock music playing]

-I’ll take two yards. -Okay.

I need a light brown.

Wow.

[Alexandra] My goal in Project Runway

is to do the best that I can.

Everybody wants to win, you know?

I mean, it’s a dream come true, really.

All right. You know what, let me buy more of this.

[Nora] What I want the most,

other than doing really well in the competition,

is to gain respect

from the fashion world in the future.

[Austin] Well, I’m trying to make like a blood splatter.

A lot of us got dyes,

which was to dye a white cotton.

Good luck.

[upbeat music playing]

[Alexandra] Dying a fabric took a very long time.

[screams]

[Vanessa] I need to get my fabric in there.

But you should’ve brought just plain water out of there,

then pour the dye safely in there.

You have to carry it back. It’s the same thing.

[Robert] No, it’s gonna cut your chances--

-No, you-- -[Robert] Yes, you did.

You cut your chances in that.

I think since the elimination,

everyone’s been really competitive.

[Kara] The stakes right now are really high

and I think that’s one of the reasons

that people are starting to get paranoid and delusional.

Strange.

[Kara] Kevin was running around me,

"Someone took my black dye."

[Kevin] I asked Jay, "Jay, did you see my dye?"

And he kind of like just blew me off.

I didn’t use. I got my own black.

If I used your black dye,

my stuff would be black right now,

not purple.

It’s impossible for me to have stolen your dye.

You [bleep] b*tch.

I didn’t take the b*tch’s dye.

That’s for sho’.

All right then.

[narrator] Coming up on Project Runway...

I think things are changing.

[Wendy] It just pisses me off, Vanessa.

Don’t interview me.

[screams]

No, I feel like sewing right through my finger.

[tense music playing]

[Kevin] My dye, seems like, mysteriously disappeared.

It was pretty stressful.

Things are fine when, you know,

when there’s no pressure on

or like when nothing’s happening.

Everybody’s, like, the nicest person.

But then, when you’re given a mission,

people’s true colors start to shine,

you know, to come through.

[Jay] Mario,

he’s like the one I go to, to kind of chill me out.

He’s very affectionate, very supportive,

kind of had a bond with him since the beginning.

See you, b*tch.

He’s convinced I stole his dye.

I’m not a liar.

I’m not a stealer.

But I wanna be and I wanna play one on TV.

[Wendy] Sweetie, it’s right here.

[Kevin] Awesome. Thank you.

Great. Thank you.

[Wendy] Yeah. I just found it right here in the corner.

[Jay] He found it. Yeah.

Hmm.

Sorry I didn’t... [laughs]

You’re an asswipe.

[upbeat music playing]

[Vanessa] The challenge was to take white cotton

and make anything we wanted to,

under the title of envy.

I tried to dig deeper and really think

of something that would be relevant to women.

And so, I chose pregnant envy.

I’m making a maternity gown.

I would love to win.

I think I deserve to win.

I’m very skilled and I have everything that it takes

to be one of the top designers in America today.

[camera shutters]

[Austin] The first thing that rose to my mind

was the idea of the evil queen from Snow White.

I think there is a little evil queen in all of us.

I think I have a little evil queen inside me.

I chose long, sleek,

somewhat severe silhouette.

[Nora] I went a little bit abstract

and I strategically placed cutouts

in order to highlight little areas

that people would be envious of.

I’m really happy with this design because

the point comes across without writing envy

across the front of it.

[Jay] I’m making like a jumpsuit.

It’s actually inspired by these models

we’re working with.

It’s gonna be-- have things handwritten all over it, like,

my agent told me I need to lose 16th of an inch on my hip.

And it’s gonna say like, "b*tch."

It’s gonna be like this walking social commentary

on how these girls feel about themselves.

[camera shutters]

[Mario] I’m just gonna have a plain white tube dress.

Keep it simple.

I don’t dwell on things too much.

I don’t premeditate.

I just think we know what would be fun,

what would be interesting.

Some people are too serious about fashion.

[Wendy] I struggle with envy a lot.

I often find myself

looking in other people who I think

are more successful than me

or that have skills that I don’t have.

[Nora] Wendy would tell me the other night

that when she thought of the word of envy,

she thought of me.

She has said to me

I have so many more chances in my life

and this is her last chance.

[dramatic music playing]

All right, guys.

[Nora] Mario’s garment is really simple.

It’s like one of the very first things

you learn to make when you become a designer.

If he doesn’t pump it up a little bit,

I don’t think he’s gonna be here.

Kara, how are you doing?

So, it’s gonna be long.

So, the bottom is gonna be just skirt shredded,

like deconstructed fairy to symbolize w*r.

My father spent his whole career in the Air Force.

That’s how I came up with my theme for envy.

Envy, it’s destructive

and it turns into eventually w*r.

How are you feeling about the time constraint?

[Kara] I have to put a move on it actually.

[Tim] Okay. All right.

Everyone, you have...

about an hour and a half tonight.

You’ll have two hours tomorrow.

[sighs]

[Austin] The physical act of sewing

is extremely stressful.

And we had the stroke of midnight

until we had to finish.

And I just think that factor put everything on edge.

-Oh, [bleep]. -Chill out.

-[bleep]. -No more negative energy.

I can’t chill.

[Kevin] All right.

[Austin] Even myself was so rushed and frazzled

that I ended up wounding myself.

[man] Are you okay? Let’s get some--

No, I feel like I sewed right through my finger.

[man] First thing, he broke the needle and everything.

[Austin] And I’ve never, ever, ever had an accident like that.

But I sewed right through. It’s horrible.

[upbeat music playing]

[screams]

Does anybody have anything to fill this with?

[chuckles]

[upbeat music playing]

[Vanessa] Being here, it’s not easy at all.

Okay. It’s a competition, but it’s being televised.

It’s like a out of body experience.

I’m not amused by this.

It’s not fun. It’s stupid.

[Wendy] Sorry you came on?

Wendy, don’t interview me for the camera, please.

[Wendy] I have been unfolding a strategy.

I always going to get people to confide in me

and I would make sure to be there

if they seem to be in a weak spot.

Anything that I thought in-- later in the game,

I could use to my advantage

if I needed to get them out of my way.

Vanessa, why are you-- why is it you chose

not to be nice to me anymore?

It just pisses me off, Vanessa.

You don’t think I’m worthy of you being nice to me?

What have I done to you?

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.

You just dismissed me.

I’ve never said anything to you, except kind and caring,

and " How are you" and "What can I do for you?"

And you say, "Don’t interview me."

Why are you laughing?

I’m not laughing.

I think things are changing

because Wendy really believes

that this is her only crack at fashion.

If you can’t be strong,

you cannot be a fashion designer.

Oh.

Wow. After a day of sewing, it’s nice to come home.

[sighs]

Is this supposed to harden a little bit?

[Austin] Yeah, it’ll dry and yeah,

sort of harden.

It feels my face is shrinking.

Austin is a unique individual.

I feel like I’m looking into a mirror right now.

[laughs]

He is a great, great, great individual.

Great guy. So like, only opposites attract.

[upbeat music playing]

Today is the day.

[Mario] I’m not insecure about my design.

I’m insecure because I really don’t know

what the judges are looking for this week

and what their moods are.

[Nora] I feel very strong about my garment,

but everyone always gets uneasy

on the day of elimination because you just never know.

[upbeat music playing]

[Starr] I like the way the design is coming along.

I’m just pressed for time.

Worried I’m gonna get everything stitched on.

To me, envy is saying something

that you don’t have, but you want.

I barely made it last time.

So, for me, when I look around at the other contestants,

they’re doing things that I’m envious of.

To me, that drives me.

Because I wanna stay in the running until the very end.

Everybody,

get your garments and meet me outside...

Interesting.

We thought we were supposed to be showing these designs

on the runway in, like, an hour.

And now, we don’t know what’s about to happen.

[Wendy] We weren’t told where we were being taken.

We were just told to bring our garments.

[Kara] We’re sitting in the van and we’re all guessing,

"What are we gonna do here?"

[Austin] None of the designers had any idea what was going on.

[upbeat music playing]

I know you’re all wondering

what we’re doing here today.

Well, fashion is a business.

It’s about communicating your vision

and more specifically, about selling your vision.

And that’s why we’re here today.

He’s gonna tell you more about it.

Hi, everyone. Welcome to 30 Van Dam.

It’s New York’s most exclusive retail store

dedicated to selling the work of America’s

best up-and-coming designers.

Today, we participate in a silent auction.

So, shortly, some of New York’s

most fashionable people will be coming to the store

and they’ll be bidding in your garments

-in the silent auction. -[woman] Hmm.

[Paul] So, let’s hope they bid a lot.

Tomorrow on the Runway,

we will learn which garment

received the highest bid.

That designer will be the winner

of this challenge.

[tense music playing]

Wow.

[Tim] The rest of you will be judged on the Runway

according to the quality of your work,

and one of you will be out.

[Wendy] When it was revealed to market yourself

and explain your vision,

I was looking for the exit.

[Vanessa] I was kind of horrified at that

because, you know, I’m making a maternity gown.

So, unless somebody walks in

who’s bloody pregnant, I’m completely screwed.

[Kara] Marketing yourself is extremely important.

If you can’t sell yourself like you believe it,

who else is gonna believe you?

[Mario] I used to sell cars.

I wasn’t very good, but I used to do that,

believe it or not.

So, selling a dress shouldn’t be a problem.

[Jay] I’m Jesus. I kind of picked a better day to be.

I’m like the king of the world.

I’m gonna just rock on.

I mean, Jesus, you know, and freak out

these, like, ladies with twin sets on.

I can’t wait for that part.

[Heidi] Hello.

Well, it’s funny that today’s challenge

was about envy, because I felt like

I was experiencing a lot of envy today.

When I was looking around and I was seeing

Alexandra and Rob, you know, they’re very young

and they’re very attractive and they seem to have a way

about them that is very magnetic.

I became really anxious.

[upbeat music playing]

People will interfere, but I have to get this dress.

[Kara] I know. I know. I hope you get it, seriously.

[Austin] A lot of the designers

chose to do sort of the object of envy.

I wanted to do sort of envy personified.

This is a wonderful piece.

-[Austin] Thank you so much. -There’s something very special.

Number one support.

Oh, wow. Gosh.

I really appreciate that.

The concept is envy.

So, what I’m trying to convey

is that they’re sort of like tumors.

Wow.

I think this is just wonderful, very, very creative.

Welcome back, everyone, to the runway.

As you all know, fashion can be a real b*tch sometimes.

And really, it’s all about being in or being out.

Austin, you won last week’s challenge,

so you will not be out this week,

but you are still eligible to win this challenge.

Your challenge was to take plain white cotton

and use the word envy as a theme for your design.

Then we asked you to sell that vision.

And the winner of this last challenge

is the one who had the highest bid at our silent auction.

The winner then also will have an automatic in

on the next challenge.

And one of you will be out.

And the judges for today are, we have Nina Garcia.

She’s the fashion director of Elle Magazine .

We have Paul Berman from 30 Van Dam.

And also, we have Constance White.

She’s a fashion journalist and the style director for eBay.

Our judges will be scoring you on the originality

of your design, its wearability,

and the concept.

[Robert] I don’t feel I’ll be eliminated,

but you never know.

The judges may think completely different.

[Kevin] My envy was leg envy.

I looked at Heidi, she was a supermodel,

I know she has great legs.

[Wendy] I wanted the dress to exude envy.

We have a snake coming right down at the base of her back

to symbolize that envy will always bite you in the a*s.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] I mean, I did what I wanted

and at the end of the day, I’m happy.

All the other people seem to like what I’ve done.

I don’t think I’ll get eliminated.

[Austin] I worked a little bit with Martinique

to get the slinky liquid walk.

She got it.

[Kara] I really like my concept

and what it shows because it’s so dear to me.

I would love for my family to see it

and know that I’m thinking of them.

[Vanessa] I really love my idea,

but, you know, on the runway,

the judges might not be instantly put off

by the fact it’s for a pregnant woman.

I’m not sure.

[Nora] My confidence in the garment that I’ve made

has escalated to a point where I think that I could win.

[Alexandra] My inspiration was Venus,

the goddess of beauty.

And, um, the colors green and gold,

because those colors signify envy.

[Starr] This time, I feel like I was able to take

the concept and work with it

and make it into something

that has the concept but is also wearable.

[Mario] Nina gave a shocked

and somewhat offended facial expression.

I’m not gonna apologize for it.

I never apologize for my work.

Mario, can I ask you?

How does this represent envy for you?

Getting to know each one of these models.

They’re very nice to each other, but at times

they can also be very catty, calculated, and competitive.

And I was with--I was with one of the girls backstage.

I won’t say which one, but we were flipping

through a magazine and she was commenting,

"Oh, I slept with this one’s boyfriend."

"Uh, this one has bad acne."

So, that’s why I incorporated the red beading,

like, they were envious of her beauty.

So they k*lled her.

-[Constance] Robert? -Yeah.

Where is the envy in your outfit?

I came up with-- this is p*nis envy.

And to be honest with you, my mother

wears the pants in the family.

She actually has the ba*ls in the family.

[Paul] I like your detailing and I like your cuts

and the fit, so I think that’s very important.

Thank you.

[Nina] Wendy, I was wondering if part of your design

was this unfinished effect.

-Well, she... -I felt your work

looks a little unfinished to me.

-She... -And I didn’t understand

whether this was part of your design process

or this is just the way it is.

Because the previous challenge, I also felt

you were a little bare, so...

Because she for me represents the goddess of envy.

And so, wherever she goes, she spreads envy

because of the bareness of the dress in the back.

[Constance] For me, you’re like talking a good game...

-Yeah. I agree. -But I don’t see it realized.

[Nina] This just feels not well-ex*cuted.

Starr.

Tell us where the envy is in your dress.

I see you used a lot of green.

I started thinking about it in a very negative way.

Like, as if it’s a cancer that once it gets in you,

it sort of goes through your blood

to where you’re almost like taken over by the disease.

Now, did you think that it was gonna be

possibly difficult to sell at the silent auction

when you started describing cancer to people?

[Nina] This is something that needs to be

something beautiful because that’s ultimately your goal.

Kara, I am--I wanna know what you were thinking.

What is envious about this?

Envy turns into greed

and greed turns into destruction and w*r.

And so, that’s how I came up with the sort of military theme.

Great.

Um, Nora.

Hi.

[Nina] Tell me about envy here.

[Nora] Um, basically, I wanted to show through the sheerness,

like some parts of the body in which people envy.

The dress as a whole I find to be as simplistic

as your explanation.

[Nina] I don’t know. I was expecting more from you.

Okay. Models and designers, you can leave the runway.

[Constance] That’s true.

Who do we hate?

Well, there was Starr.

[Nina] Starr I felt had, you know,

I really felt the emotion in those clothes.

It definitely looked like cancer.

-There was-- -Yes. It did look like cancer.

And the judges felt that you three were the weakest.

[Nora] For them to tell me that I was one of the weakest

after going from one of the best the week before,

that was rough.

[sobbing]

[Heidi] Wendy, while your design had a vision,

it looked completely unfinished.

Mario, you didn’t put in enough effort

and your design was too simple and you received

the lowest bid at the silent auction.
