And, remember, one designer will be cut every week

until three remain.

Those three will show their line at Olympus Fashion Week,

then one winner will be chosen.

The winner will receive a spread in Elle Magazine,

a mentorship with Banana Republic design team,

and $100,000 to start their own line.

This challenge is all about envy.

I think things are changing.

[Kara] People are starting to get paranoid and delusional.

[Kevin] I’m asking you. That’s all.

[Jay] You’re an asswipe.

I didn’t take the b*tch’s dye.

[Tim] Get your garments and meet me outside.

[woman] We weren’t told where we were being taken.

Fashion is a business

and you need to sell that vision.

All right. Let’s let them in.

[Wendy] I was experiencing a lot of envy.

I don’t like my weaknesses to be on display.

I have been unfolding a strategy.

We’re baring all here.

[laughs]

I was going to get people to confide anything

that I thought I could use to my advantage

if I needed to get them out of my way.

[upbeat music playing]

[Mario] You know, Nina gave a weird

and shocked facial expression.

I never apologize for my work. Period. Bottom line.

[dramatic music playing]

[Heidi] The winner of this silent auction is Kara Saun.

That means that you’re safe for the next challenge.

[Nina] Wendy, your work looks a little unfinished.

Starr, did you think that it was gonna be

possibly difficult to sell when you started

describing cancer to people?

[Heidi] Wendy, you’re in.

That means Mario out.

[speaking foreign language]

[upbeat music playing]

This is a search for the next big fashion designer.

[Michael] It’s a cutthroat business.

[Kara] The competition was fierce.

[Heidi] Twelve contestants, three finalists,

and one winner.

Three designers will make their runway debut

at Olympus Fashion Week.

[woman] I plan to make it to fashion week.

[man] I think I’ll be number one.

[Heidi] And the winner of Project Runway

will receive everything they need

to start their own label.

[woman] I think I deserve to win.

People are gonna start getting pretty bitchy.

-Oh, my. -For these 12 contestants,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[upbeat music playing]

Do you miss Mario?

No.

[Jay] I’m gonna have to start getting competitive.

After Mario,

I have a point of view/opinion [bleep] you thing.

There’s no room for me to act like that anymore.

So I know--I learned my lesson.

I’m gonna play the game.

I’m gonna inject me into my wok but I’m gonna play the game.

[Starr] I came here questioning whether I should be a lawyer,

whether I should be a fashion designer,

and all this passion.

And creativity that I thought I had lost is coming out.

I’m not as good as some other people

but I do feel like I can at least run with the pack.

[Robert] I’m here right now at this moment

concentrating on winning this thing.

I was living for the past three years in Russia.

Somewhat happily married and had a successful business.

Ended up getting a divorce and just kind of got homesick

and wanted to get back to New York.

I believe always in Project Runway.

It’s a turning point to like reinventing myself.

[Kara] We were told meet Heidi

at the Banana Republic Design Studios.

When we showed up, I was just wondering

what we were gonna do this time.

[Heidi] Welcome to Banana Republic.

Two of you are gone

and ten of you are left still to compete,

and now we’re here at Banana Republic

and I’m gonna give you a new challenge.

This week, it’s all about commercial appeal.

Your challenge is to design a holiday party dress

that would appeal to the Banana Republic customer.

I wanna introduce you to Deborah Lloyd.

She’s the head of design for Banana Republic

and she will tell you all the details.

Thank you, Heidi. Welcome to our design studios.

I’m so happy to have you here.

Now, when you’re working for a big brand

like Banana Republic,

you have to think about many different things.

It has to work for the customer.

It has to be sexy but yet sophisticated.

We have two major themes this season

and you can seem them reflected on the walls.

One is this beautiful yellow and pink story,

and it’s called sort of sexy secretary,

my grandmother’s attic.

And our second story this season is really inspired by Art Deco.

I don’t want you to lose your personality

in this challenge but remember you are designing

for Banana Republic so please try and reflect that.

I’ve got fabrics for you to take with you.

[Starr] One of my favorite fabrics.

It’s my favorite store.

And I’m a Banana Republic customer.

So I have too many ideas and I can’t concentrate,

I’m so excited.

[giggles]

[Austin] I immediately was like drawn to this fabric.

I love it. Just like a rich rosebud.

Something--you know, the dress is gonna be like a rose.

[Vanessa] That looks nice. Where did you get that?

[Jay] I’m frightened. I really am.

What I did for the second challenge

is like quintessential Jay, you know?

Crazy, over-the-top, social message.

And then going to Banana Republic

and it’s like the total opposite.

Oh, I have to tell you that it is just not me at all.

You’ll see what comes out of my fingertips.

Please.

Designers, now that you know your challenge,

I wanna bring you back to the runway

so can choose your model.

And don’t forget your fabrics.

Let’s go.

Now comes the fun part.

You’ve seen the models already twice in action

and you know it’s crucial to pick the right model.

Let’s bring out the models.

[Heidi] I just wanna remind our models

that this is a competition for you as well.

A spread in Elle Magazine is up for grabs.

There are now 11 of you left on the runway

and only 10 designers.

The designers will now choose, and one of you will be out.

I really want to be the last model here

and I really want that spread in Elle.

[Allison] I hope I get the chance to work

with all of them.

Their styles are all so different

and I really want to wear all their clothes.

Kara Saun, you won the last challenge.

You get to pick first.

[Kara] This week, I think I’m going to go

with a very strong walker, Martin.

Oh.

I got the one that I wanted.

Next one is Vanessa.

Austin.

Alison, it’s been awesome,

but you know I like to change it up.

This time I’m gonna go with Jenny.

Jay.

[Jay] This week, I’m going to go with the jolly, green Julia.

[Robert] As it got down to the ninth button

and my name was not called,

I realized I am the last one.

It’s pretty tough when you have to pick

the last model, eliminating the other model.

Jay.

Yeah.

[Robert] I was saying, "Oh, [bleep]

oh [bleep] oh [bleep]"

[Heidi] There’s only one button left in my bag

and that belongs to Robert.

There’s two models left on the stage,

Alison and Josiane.

The model you choose will be in.

The other model will be out.

[tense music playing]

I have to think about what’s best for the runway

so I have to pick Josie.

Yes! Yeah! Woo!

[applause]

[Jay] I’m sorry.

[Alison] I was fine and then I saw Nora

started crying and then I was like,

"Oh, crap." My eyes got watery.

[Nora] I was for sure that if I didn’t pick her,

somebody would have picked her.

[Heidi] I’m sorry.

-You’re out. -Thank you.

[speaking foreign language]

-[all] Bye. You did a great job. -[woman] You rock, Al.

Sorry, Alison.

I’ll send you off to your challenge.

You have two days to complete it.

[Robert] This is actually the first project

where, you know, we don’t have to sit down and draw

and like kind of like help model the scheme

and like, you know, plan.

[Austin] We have two days for this challenge

so I think we’ll--

I’ll be able to focus on our designs

and the construction

and make it as good as it could be.

My design is to take this rose print

on cream satin

and make a sort of afternoon party dress.

I know a lot of other designers

just have completely conflicting styles

with what Banana’s all about.

[upbeat music playing]

We’re gonna do a really, really [bleep] bias.

The way the challenge has been set up,

it doesn’t feel to me that there’s any room

for my brand of creativity to come through.

I wonder how hard I would fall to the ground

if I would jump through the window right now.

I get stressed out.

I go through patterns with this stuff.

So then I start being boisterous and loud and obnoxious.

Jesus Christ, Rob! How [bleep] long are you gonna take?

[Robert] It’ll take me as long as damn possible!

I’m sick of your [bleep].

[Wendy] I find a lot what these people do

just really annoying.

I don’t need any of this crap.

[Robert] Jay, get off my machine!

[Jay] That was-- I’m so terrified.

[laughs]

[Wendy] If you get to be 40 years old,

you know an opportunity when you see it.

I just got a different agenda while I’m here.

[Nora] I [bleep] heard that, b*tch.

I’m gonna come over here and [bleep] you up.

[indistinct chatter]

[laughter]

[Kevin] It’s just very childish.

Like a lot of the screaming, running around.

I’m like--you know, it’s annoying me.

I wonder if Banana would let any of these people

work in their studio?

I will always be a goofball, you know,

but I’m still gonna get my [bleep] done.

I will throw you in the trash.

[laughs]

-[Kara] I will throw you. -Oh, my God.

[Vanessa] Put her in the trashcan please.

Please.

I don’t really wanna interrupt you

but can I get everyone to gather around please?

[indistinct chatter]

A letter has been delivered from Banana Republic.

[Kara] We didn’t know there’s gonna be a twist,

but now it’s just like,

"Okay, what’s the twist this week?"

And I want Vanessa to read it.

[Heidi Klum] Coming up on Project Runway.

[Wendy] The stakes rose a million percent.

The full room got a lot more intense.

Say it to my face, Kevin.

I don’t think you wanna know what I think.

[dramatic music playing]

A letter has been delivered from Banana Republic.

And I want Vanessa to read it. "

[Vanessa] Deborah Lloyd and Banana Republic

has some very exciting news.

After having the opportunity to meet all of you face to face,

she feels so confident

you will do a fabulous job with this challenge

that Banana Republic is pleased to announce

that the winning holiday party dress

will be manufactured

and sold in select stores nationwide and online

as part of Banana Republic’s winter line.

[Wendy] The stakes rose a million percent.

[Tim] There’s another aspect though

and it has to do with how big this reward is

for this challenge.

That is that moving forward into the next challenge,

the winner of this does not have immunity,

so there’s no guaranteed in in the following challenge.

[Kara] Being safe is great

but having your design

reach millions of people is better, to me.

[Austin] Any woman could walk in and buy

an Austin Scarlett original in Banana Republic is--

it would be just a dream come true.

I hope you’re really thrilled with this opportunity

because chances are greater that all 10 of you

would be struck by lightning

than that this would happen for you.

All right. Back to work.

[Robert] That’s what we need here, Cap.

We need a mud wrestling match or jello.

How come everyone got quiet all of a sudden, huh?

[Kara] Stop trying to distract me, Rob.

[Alexandra] The whole room got a lot more intense.

Like everybody, I could tell, you know,

their eyes just like lit up and everybody was like,

"Let’s get to work," you know?

[Wendy] I had a strategy

when I first came into the competition.

After two weeks, I wasn’t doing very well.

I just wish I would have seen more clothes.

Not well-ex*cuted.

[Wendy] I decided to just basically stop

worrying about other people

and start thinking about what I could do and do it.

With this design, it’s quite different

than what I’ve done for the past two challenges.

It’s very conservative.

Obviously, I need to produce a very strong piece

for me to get myself out of this hole.

[Starr] There couldn’t have been a challenge

that was better suited for my creative abilities,

because our inspiration is Art Deco.

That’s my favorite, favorite stuff.

So I think I have an original design

that is really nice-looking.

[Kevin] I like this dress.

It’s gonna be a good one, I think.

I think they’ll like it.

With what’s going on right now,

I think there’s looking to be a lot of black.

[Robert] With this Banana Republic project,

I had to place myself as a designer

for the Banana Republic people.

I want to like, you know, make a subtle dress.

You know, accents, just like, you know,

make a nice, clean princess with a knee line skirt.

And then I kind of said, "No. No. I wanna change it around.

Let me make it a leopard."

I started making three dresses.

I think I need to--I need to-- I need to sleep on it.

You’re gonna sleep on it?

It’s almost 12:00 and Robert still has a lot of work to do.

And I think he could be in jeopardy of not finishing.

All right. I’m gonna sleep on it.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kevin] Starr is doing a black--black and red.

Is that bad?

Mine’s pretty more subtle than that.

[Starr] I overheard him say,

"Starr’s also doing a black dress

but it’s not so subtle, you know,

for the Banana Republic style."

Say it to my face, Kevin.

Say what? Say what?

Whatever you have to say.

There’s no reason for people to play petty games

and like try and make people feel bad.

So if you wanna say that kind of stuff, fine,

but it’s rude to stand over there

and say it in earshot of me.

[Kevin] If you wanna know, I’ll tell you,

but I don’t think you wanna know what I think.

On that note, it’s time to get a drink.

[upbeat music playing]

[Robert] We all went out to a bar for the first time.

Definitely, definitely need it.

I shouldn’t say all of us went.

Wendy and Austin did go home.

They didn’t wanna come with us.

[Nora] I hope that my parents are proud of me

for where I am.

Nora, how do you get stains out?

Everything was kind of going wrong for me

with this project.

Oh, my God.

[Jay] I was like sweating ba*ls.

[dramatic music playing]

[Austin] Last night, I knew we had

a whole day of work ahead of us

and I didn’t wanna go get trashed

and come in hungover the next day

when I had a dress to make.

Project Runway is not about partying for me.

It’s about working.

I think a lot of the designers this morning

were a bit hungover.

So I’m definitely glad I didn’t go out.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kara] Today’s our second full day of work

on Banana Republic, but it just seems like

we have a lot of work left to do.

[Robert] So it’s kind of funny actually.

This morning I’m like, "You know what,

I gotta just make a final decision,"

and I couldn’t be any more happy

than what I’m working on right now.

So I took back my little subtle ice blue

and add a little leopard and into the mixture.

[Nora] I love the leopard, Robert.

[Robert] I know. I’m not doing it though.

I can’t. Not for Banana.

[Nora] I’m very happy with my dress.

It’s not simple.

The dress, as whole, I find to be as simplistic

as your explanation.

[Nora] It’s very Banana Republic.

It’s sexy

and it has the sophistication that they want,

but at the same time, it’s like me.

I see myself in that dress.

[Alexandra] My dress is...

more of like a resort holiday thing.

I was thinking more like The Hamptons or St. Bart.

[Jay] From how I feel right now to how I felt

when I got the challenge are two different things,

’cause I was like sweating ba*ls.

I’ve been having these moments in this process

that something will pop up cosmically

when I was sketching

and then I literally look up

and there’s a picture of the Chrysler building.

And I’m like,

"The Chrysler building is Art Deco."

So I’m kind of working off of that,

these kind of sun shapes, rays pleating.

Now I am on my way.

[dramatic music playing]

[Tim] Starr, how are you doing?

It will be a miracle if finish this thing.

It’s a lot more complicated than I expected.

It took forever and ever and ever and ever.

You know, I’ve been completely lambasted

by these judges twice now,

and I’m still here,

and I have to go through the third time.

I’m gonna do everything I can to really play it safe.

[Tim] Are you concerned about the time that remains?

Yeah. Yeah.

[Tim] Do you have a plan for how to use it?

[Starr] I’m just gonna do everything I can

and save the trim for last.

Okay. Okay. Thank you, Starr.

[Tim] Robert, what’s going on?

[Robert] Last night, I had--I had a lot of thoughts

going through my head.

I was honestly going-- I didn’t know what to do.

You know, just like figure it out,

flip a coin and pick one.

But then, you know, I was feeling more of this

and then, uh, debating. You know what,

I like this and this.

And then I just, "You know what,

I think I’m just going to put the little accent--

the leopard with the ice blue."

[Tim] Like safari meets the ice cap.

You’re taking risks. I’ll say that to you.

You’re taking risks with this.

When I did combine all the three dresses

and made it into one, and then I kind of overdid it.

-Good, good, good. -Oh, yeah. I’m a risk-taker.

I am going to leave you until tomorrow.

You have about an hour tonight.

You’ll have two hours tomorrow.

[Robert] I want to like iron my dress,

and the second I picked up the iron,

there’s just like a brown liquid of rust.

The water just oozed right out.

This sucks. These things drip.

Nora, how do you get stains out?

[Nora] Baby powder.

You know, the silk I picked out wasn’t--

it wasn’t the best silk.

The sewing machine that I had made all my seams puffy.

Just everything was kind of going wrong for me

with this project.

Oh, my God. My God.

[Robert] There’s nothing I can do.

You know, Nora helped me with a little baby powder,

you know, to wipe it but that didn’t do anything.

So I’m like, "You know what,

I’m gonna save that problem for the morning."

[dramatic music playing]

[Vanessa] You know, the whole judging process

is one big ball of stress.

It’s really horrible to speculate

about who’s gonna leave.

I mean, it could be me.

It could be anyone, really.

You don’t really know.

[Robert] It’s kind of a chaotic night last night.

A little tough for me to go to sleep

and I’m not thinking negatively about it.

I just know what I have to do right now.

I’m going in there, focus,

and just, you know, do the job I have to do.

I’m thinking I’m going a different route.

I’m gonna present myself a little bit more,

you know, just to fit with Banana Republic

also, I gotta transform myself

into like, you know, a Banana Republican.

[Kara] I’m really happy for Wendy this week.

I’m really actually rooting for her a lot.

So I got up early this morning, I went up to Wendy’s,

and we just had a little fun extreme makeover.

-Alexandra? -[Alexandra] Yeah?

You have a curling iron or just have this flat iron?

I feel that how she’s dressed the last two weeks

contributes to how the judges view her.

Does that look like the face of a 40-year-old woman?

-[woman] No. -[Kara] I say no.

I have almost no sense

of my own physical appearance to the world.

I feel so grateful to her.

And we’re gonna see if it changes the way

the judges respond to me.

[Kara] You know, when she goes up there

and she talks to Nina, it can be like, "Yeah, Nina.

You know, bring it--you know, bring it on."

[Wendy] I did feel good about my dress today.

I am, you know, as always,

cautiously optimistic

and hoping for the best.

[Jay] I’m good. I’m comfortable with my dress.

I can’t believe I pulled it off.

Julia, I’m trying to give that girl some hips

’cause, God, you know you didn’t give her any.

Of all the dresses I’ve ever made,

this is the one I’m most proud of.

I think it turned out really well.

I’m sort of amazed I was able to pull it off

’cause it’s kind of beyond my technical skills.

[Kevin] I saw a little bit of Starr’s

and I looked at it for a second

and I was like, "Ooh.

Maybe I’m wrong, man. She’s gonna kick my a*s."

Is there a dot right there? Is that dirty?

Yeah, I meant to put that there.

Oh.

[Robert] We’re gonna cover this baby up right now.

I’m gonna put a brooch on you.

Possibly something like this.

That’s exactly what we’re doing.

I think we got ourselves a glamorous holiday dress.

difficult set of designs to judge

because you all look sensational.

I have a hard time imagining that dress

at Banana Republic.

I don’t feel I know what your style is.

Welcome to the runway.

As you know, fashion is cutthroat

At the end of the fashion show, one of you will be out.

Your challenge was to design a holiday party dress

for Banana Republic.

You will be judged on the style of your outfit

and how well it fits the Banana Republic aesthetic.

On behalf of the winning dress,

a donation will be made by Banana Republic

to Dress For Success,

a not-for-profit organization

that helps low income women with career development.

The winner’s dress will be sold

in select Banana Republic stores

nationwide and online.

I wanna introduce you to the judges.

We have Michael Kors, fashion designer extraordinaire,

Nina Garcia, fashion director of Elle magazine,

and Deborah Lloyd, head of design

for Banana Republic.

Let’s start the show.

[Kara] So in this particular challenge,

I really felt that things had to be finished

in a certain way because it’s a Banana Republic clientele,

working women who want a lot for their money

but don’t wanna spend a lot of money.

So, I mean, you have to keep all these things in mind.

[Austin] Just the incentive of having my dress

like in every town in the United States,

if not, you know, all over the world,

that’s just incredibly exciting.

[Starr] I feel like I accomplished the task

that was put out for us and I think I came out

with a nice-looking, wearable dress.

I’m really hoping that the judges

are gonna like it.

[Alexandra] I definitely think it was a challenge

I think to my strength.

And Banana Republic, you know,

it’s more like ready-to-wear,

which is more of what I like to design.

[Wendy] When I saw my dress go down the runway,

you just can’t have any better feeling as a designer

than to see your work on the perfect girl,

and it just looks beautiful.

[Jay] I guess somewhere in my soul,

I knew I could do something that was pretty.

I don’t know why I got so pent up about it.

[Kevin] I knew my idea was good and I know it was strong.

I feel like it’s gonna appeal to the judges.

[Vanessa] The dress that I did for Banana Republic was--

I think it was the prettiest one,

and I think it fitted the theme the best.

[Nora] I would love to have my piece manufactured

because everybody in my town at home shops

at Banana Republic, and I’m really excited.

I think--I think it’s an amazing honor.

[Robert] I always watch the reaction of judges

when my model walks by ’cause I’m like,

"Okay, I’m definitely the bottom of the barrel."

I wanna ask all the designers to please come onto the runway.

Let’s bring out the models.

I wanna start with Austin’s dress.

Do you wanna tell us a little bit about it?

I really love the whole idea of sort of a winter floral.

I really tried to emphasize

a sort of diagonal idea

that sort of crisscrosses in the front

and then again terminates in the back

and then flowing into the drapery of a skirt.

[Nina] Is it attached? Is it part of the dress?

This actually is not.

I didn’t have time.

Alexandra,

I love the look of your dress.

I think you really captured the inspiration.

You’ve come up with the perfect

sort of ’30s-inspired party dress.

And then it’s very wearable.

Like it’s refined yet very sophisticated.

I love what you did.

And it’s very comfortable too.

Wendy,

do you wanna explain your holiday dress?

This basically for me is the ideal dress

for a young professional woman

who is going to a c*ck party in the holiday time.

Then this, of course, was inspired by the fact

that your holiday 2004 collection has capes.

So I wanted to do a variation

so that it would fit in with your collection.

Wendy, always I found in the past,

we always kind of agreed on that...

the dresses were never really looking like they were complete

and I think this time,

it looks completely complete to me.

[Michael] Starr, let’s talk about this dress.

I have a hard time imagining that dress

at Banana Republic.

It’s a little costumey.

Why did you take it this far?

I mean, what was your thought?

I’m actually an avid customer of Banana Republic.

It is something that I could see hanging there.

Is it really the customer? Is it really...

[Deborah] Yeah. The design sensibility,

I think it’s sort of moved on.

It’s got a little bit of a hard edge.

I think it’s sort of--

it’s almost like just a statement.

We haven’t talked about Jay’s dress yet.

I mean, this looks very complicated to do.

-This... -[Michael] Very.

-It fits her like a dream. -[Nina] Yeah.

Is this happening to me? Really?

No, it really fits her beautifully.

Robert,

this doesn’t look like you.

I feel like this is a little bit of a pastiche

of too much of what’s happening out there right now.

Did you get bogged down with the fabric or...

The concept of my idea was I have this like flowing--

you know, like the chiffon flowing into the dress,

like a basic solid color.

[Nina] I have to agree with Michael.

I don’t feel I know what your style is.

[Michael] It has to be what’s gonna happen next in fashion.

How far can I push it

without going too far?
