every week until three remain.

Those three will show their line

at Olympus Fashion Week.

Then, one winner will be chosen.

The winner will receive a spread in Elle magazine.

A mentorship with Banana Republic design team,

and $100,000 to start their own line.

[upbeat music playing]

Kevin, you are the winner

and you have a guaranteed in for next round's challenge.

Tell the judges who on your team should be out.

Austin could have done a better job with leadership.

It was just really just crying, and crying,

and crying, crying, and complaining.

I would say Nora for that.

Vanessa, as inspiring and talented as she is,

just isn't as adept in sewing as Wendy and I.

[Heidi] Vanessa, you're out.

This is a search for the next big fashion designer.

[Jay] It's a cutthroat business.

[Kara] The competition is fierce.

[Heidi] Twelve contestants,

three finalists,

and one winner.

Three designers will make

their runway debut at Olympus Fashion.

[Alexandra] I plan to make it to fashion week.

[Austin] I think I'll be number one.

And the winner of Project Runway

will receive everything they need to start their own label.

[Vanessa] I think I deserve to win.

People are going to start getting pretty bitchy.

Oh, my.

[Heidi] For these 12 contestants,

Project Runway is the chance of a lifetime.

[tense music playing]

New day.

[Austin] The whole runway inquisition was a bit intense.

I felt like I was stabbed in the back

when Wendy named me,

I really did,

because it was complete bull [bleep].

[Wendy] My relationship with Austin appears to have suffered.

He has adopted this wounded thing.

It's-- it doesn't sit well with me.

I don't like that.

[Nora] Yesterday was pretty intense.

I did get upset.

I did get emotional.

But I do feel like I should be here

because I worked my a*s off.

[Jay] It was weird with Vanessa leaving,

but I'm still here

and I'm getting competitive now.

I didn't think I would ever be.

Now, I wanna win this mother [bleep].

[all] Hi.

Four of you are gone

and eight of you are left.

And just to keep things a little interesting around here,

I let you choose your model first,

and then I give you a challenge second.

Let's bring out the models.

[tense music playing]

[Heidi] There are eight designers,

but nine models on the runway.

At the end, there will be one model left

and that model will be out.

Kevin, you won the last challenge,

-so you will be first to choose. -[Kevin] Okay.

It's gonna be Olga.

[Heidi] Next one is Kara Saun.

Morganza.

-Austin. -[Austin] Julia.

So, Nora, you choose which model will stay

and which model will be out.

It's between Audrey and Melissa.

I'm going to choose...

[Audrey] Everything happens for a reason,

but I have to go back home

and, you know,

I'm still a senior in high school,

so I still got a little bit of stuff to do,

you know, before I can really go out

and, you know, fulfill this career.

You've chosen your model.

Well, take a good look at her

because she's your new client.

I'll give you a hint.

[hums "Wedding March"]

This challenge is all about the designer-client relationship.

You need to work with your model

to create the wedding dress of her dreams,

whether it's a classic white

or a red mini dress.

[Kara] I was really glad that I picked Jenny.

She's not high strung.

She's not a lot of drama.

She's just-- she's perfect for,

you know, the wedding dress.

Just perfect.

I hope you've been good to them

because now they're in charge.

[laughter]

[Jay] Morganza, she's been difficult.

Is this what a 9:00 to 5:00 job is like?

[Jay] Dramatic...

moody...

and crazy.

Whoa!

[Jay] I just picked Morganza

because she walks great.

And if I knew the challenge,

I might have picked a different model.

You have one half hour to meet with them

and two days to complete your mission.

Good luck.

[Tim] We have an exciting new challenge, this wedding dress.

The one thing that I just wanna assert

is I hope that each of you is confident

about bringing your own design philosophy

and sensibility into this challenge,

and not completely...

abdicating creative thinking to the model.

You want to win this.

And if you're feeling really uneasy

about what's going to be presented

on the judging runway, don't do it.

Because you don't wanna end up with your design

at the fashion cemetery over there.

[Morgan humming "Wedding March"]

[Jay] Oh, God.

They're excited.

This, the black Versace dress that Cameron Diaz

wore to the first Charlie's Angels thing, okay?

-I don't remember it. -Tight.

Tight like this, buttons coming down right here.

[Jay] She bangs into, like, the room

and she's [growling] like...

So this to be like a Lycra,

almost a little bit see through, sheer.

-Okay. -I'm so excited about this.

This is the best whatever.

What do you call it?

Challenge. This is the best challenge so far.

I'll just draw a bunch of sketches

and you can pick out whatever you want.

Yeah, do whatever. Like, I don't know

-the difference between the fabrics, so... -Okay.

Whatever you used in all your clothes because I like them all.

[Alexandra] So, I'm really happy I chose Erin because

Erin has let me do, like, whatever I want basically.

I can make a leather, you know, make a lace out of leather,

and like, you know, put the pieces of leather on top.

-Um... -Like, I mean-- I mean,

it is your wedding day, like come on.

You know, I mean, no one has to do it traditional,

like she was saying, you can be in red miniskirt, you know.

[Rob] Well, I'm thinking like, listen, this is my client

and I wanna make her look beautiful,

I wanna make her feel beautiful

on the most important day of her life.

And, um, it's my job to do that.

Like, my favorite colors are,

like, silver, gray, slash leopard.

-Uh-hmm. -[Julia] Um, like,

I want leopard for some reason.

[Austin] Yes. Okay.

going over it with the roses under it.

That would be pretty.

[Nora] Melissa kept on saying,

"This is the dress that I've been imagining

since I was a little girl."

And I go, wait a minute, aren't you 16?

So, you want flowers on the train?

-[Melissa] It's got roses. -[Nora] The roses.

My middle name is Rose

and I have to have roses in my dress.

[Nora] The dress that she came to me with

was like cheesy and very princess.

Just-- she doesn't know. She's not a designer.

You're a good designer.

-Yeah, everybody else-- -I'm so excited.

Everybody else is trying to make the "model dress."

-[Kevin] And it's all white, no? -Yeah, it's all white.

Yeah, because we have to put a lot of jewels and jewelry,

-you have to-- -Really?

[Olga] All over this thing.

[Kevin] I got Olga, but the diamonds packed all over it

and it's kinda little gaudy. She's Russian.

Do it like a corset, right?

Car seat?

Yeah. Like-- yeah.

-Oh, corset. -Corset.

[Kevin] She's a little too opinionated.

I just have to make sure that she's really satisfied

and happy like a regular customer would be.

I have to work hard.

Yes. Very hard. Very.

[Olga] So, I'm gonna make him work.

I'm going to crack the whip.

And we're gonna do this.

But I'm just concerned, in comparison,

they're gonna think mine's like a cop out and simple

-because these other people-- -But they know that we're--

That we're making you do this.

[Jay] And if Morganza wanted me to make a see through

tank dress for the beach

with flip flops and dirty hair.

So, I'm like, "Oh my God, I do not--

I don't want to get eliminated right now

because of Morganza."

[Morgan] Bye.

Jay is gonna be my b*tch.

[laughs]

I'm so excited about this.

[Jay] She's like, "I want it sheer."

-A sheer wedding dress. -[Kevin laughs]

[Jay] Because I know that there's gonna be princesses

in this group of, like, bells, and, bodices and poof.

And then, here comes Morgan [bleep]

her n*pples are showing in her wedding gown, you know.

I don't know.

I'm gonna go out this week

because Morgan's sabotaging me.

Olga wants just diamonds only.

-[Rob] Are you serious? -Poor [bleep] thing.

[Jay] They're not designers, they're models.

The consensus with all of us

is that these girls are just like clueless kinda,

and they just wanna look like

a Disney character for this challenge.

Was she difficult?

Oh, my God, making a wedding dress in two days.

Usually, people who do it take months.

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway...

I feel that Austin is off his game.

I wouldn't consider her my friend anymore.

[Tim] All right, everyone, we're here at Mood.

You're shopping for fabric for a wedding dress.

We have $300,

and 45 minutes.

Go for it. Make it work.

[upbeat music playing]

She wanted a leopard print and I thought,

this is really awesome, and since it was teal,

I thought it'd be really beautiful.

It was $50 a yard, though,

but I think it's worth it because it was just so fabulous.

It's funny, I have a different tint on my glasses.

So, this looks like really like egg color.

[Rob] I actually did design my ex-wife's, uh, wedding gown.

So, uh, I kinda take it close to heart

and I understand how important it is for a woman.

Here's the sequins that I picked.

It's very pretty.

Do you know how much these are a piece?

I need a lot of 'em.

[Nora] Melissa asked for roses in her hair.

Wanted the roses in her hands,

which is tacky and it's not me.

Whatever I can buy.

How many roses with $135, I want bags of them.

[Tim] We need you to wrap it up.

[Austin] This time, we have two days for this challenge.

I just wish we could have a little more time

with these challenges so we could actually

finish these things properly.

[Jay] Morgan?

[Morgan] Hello?

-Jay! -It's Jay!

-[Morgan] Hello? -Now, listen...

No, no, let me explain.

It's not gonna be like--

[Jay] I found myself getting caught up

in the emotional wrath of Morgan

and I thought she'd just be fun.

But now I'm getting worried.

And now, the biggest day of her life,

I'm the one who has to make the [bleep] dress for it!

[screams]

I'm gonna die.

I hate this.

I hate this project.

So, now that I'm thinking,

I kinda wanna sabotage her.

No, if I was doing that,

I'd be doing what Nora's making.

[laughter]

I'd be like, "Morgan, I covered your dress in roses."

[Nora] Hey, listen, okay?

This is not my design, okay?

This is Miss Pageant USA's.

"I wanna be a big poofy princess with diamonds and roses."

She's got everything planned out to a tee.

Let me tell you. She came in here last night

and was like, boom, this is what I want to look like,

and I'm like, "All right."

[Nora] They put on so many clothes in their job

that they have to put on,

like, here's your garment, you're number 64, get on the runway.

But in this case, it's like they really want it to be

the way that they want it to be.

So, when you're trying to execute that for them

and they're in more power, like, it's definitely stressful.

This is the fringe.

-Ooh, I love it. -Do you?

-Yeah. -Okay, good.

-Phew! -[laughter]

I saw it and I was like, "It's fabulous."

No, it is.

[Wendy] I feel that Austin

is a little bit off his game now.

When you work with a client,

you know you have to tune

your energies to your client.

But Austin has one frequency that he operates on.

We'll see how that plays out

in terms of their collaboration.

I think it will suffer.

The front neckline is, sort of,

almost follow, like, the natural drape

of how this chain wants...

[Austin] Julia's sense of style

is so very different than mine.

You know, I'm sure all the judges are just expecting,

you know, Austin Scarlett to come out with like the biggest,

widest, ruffleist, most romantic,

like, white wedding gown that ever was.

But, uh, that's not what they're going to get. [laughs]

I bought this dye.

It's called wine

because for a small amount of money,

I was able to get hundreds of roses.

-The white ones? -Which are all gonna get dyed.

So, everything that we do is gonna be the construction

and the design of the gown.

[Kara] Basically, she just wants something very simple,

low cut in the front, low cut in the back.

I do wanna show that I can be very versatile.

So, I was glad that you chose that type of a wedding dress.

-Okay. Cool. -We don't need diamonds.

-We don't need pearls. -Yeah.

I just don't feel that you should jeopardize

your standing here because of-- you know,

any of the models want diamonds and flowers.

Let them know that you know

you're gonna give them the perfect design

that's gonna make them look beautiful.

[upbeat music playing]

[Rob] Martinique does have a very nice,

uh, beautiful figure, so we definitely both decided

that it has to be very form fitting on her.

And then, we're gonna have a big poofy,

like, silk organza on the skirt that's gonna be removable.

[Wendy] I'm really happy about this challenge

because I've designed a lot of wedding dresses

and formal dresses, so I feel really comfortable.

[Nora] This color is just not

what I thought it was going to be.

Damn.

The dye is of course the wrong color red.

But I'm just gonna take everything with a grain of salt

and just keep going, no matter what happens.

I learned my lesson last time.

I came here to compete

and not to be [bleep] around with by somebody.

I'm not gonna freak out.

They're still pretty, though,

but they're not the color that their supposed to be.

[Wendy] I really felt that I

came up with a good design for Joy,

and I expect that it will win.

Wendy, her things have always been just like gimmicky,

silly, not flattering.

She just doesn't understand,

you know, the basics of design.

In addition to the fact of being completely

out of tune with the world.

[upbeat music playing]

We had been planning, just once, to all go out all together.

It's our one chance to, like, get dressed up

and go out on the town,

and then-- and just really have fun.

What are you wearing?

I'm going to wear my studded thong tonight.

[Austin] I love to go out.

I love to go dancing.

I like to get all dressed up

and, you know, just...

you know, some of my favorite things to do.

[Jay] We're here at the Cutting Grove.

An aproposly named nightspot.

I am extremely sexually frustrated.

"Robeo" talks about sex 24 hours a day

and, like, he is so checking out Alexandra.

[Rob] With Alexandra, I mean,

she's an attractive looking specimen.

Yeah. There is-- there is like this,

uh, an innocent flirtation.

It is kind of fun that I have,

you know, with her, this innocent,

you know, innocent fun that we have.

[Alexandra] Me and Robert are just friends, you know.

I don't see him, like, in,

like, a romantic kind of way.

We're just, like, friends, you know?

We all go outside,

and then Rob starts doing pull-ups on the scaffold.

First I started laughing because I thought it was hilarious.

[Jay] I think that's maybe what fueled Rob,

you know, that he was like next to her.

And he's fueled by women, fueled by sex.

[Kevin] I see him pulling his legs up and,

like, trying to get up there, so I kinda like looked away

because I didn't think he was going to get his legs up.

And the next thing I hear is a big thunk.

[Kara] He's bleeding. Your head is bleeding.

I think we're all really worried

that, you know, he might be seriously hurt.

Get a napkin, water, napkin, ice.

I'm gonna take care of it tonight.

Get some rest, and then you'll be fine.

I think it might just be simple and pretty.

And the one thing you don't wanna utter on that runway

during the judging is "Morgan made me do it."

-May I see one of the roses? -[Nora] Mm-hmm.

It's so frosty, I love it.

I'm gonna keep going.

So, I have some things in my head

of what I wanna do and we're gonna discuss.

I wanna put another layer of mesh,

but I just want it to be kind of just like...

I like it more simple. I like it--

uh, you know, the side things,

that's fine for me to be going out,

-but for a weddings dress... -Just watch, I'll show you...

-...it's just too different. -These cut outs that I--

uh, she wanted me to make ended up looking like fried eggs,

which is good because then I don't have to use them.

I just need these people-- these judges

to understand this, you know.

And not be like, "Why does she have eggs on her hips?"

-Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no. -[Jay] You know?

That's-- I'm good you didn't put them on.

[Jay] I have to just put my faith in her

for the next 20 hours to [bleep]

keep it under control because I do not wanna go home,

[Kevin] When she comes in and she brings her boyfriend,

and everybody's like, "Who is this guy," you know.

But you said, like, you wanna do, like, diamonds, right?

That's her big request, the diamonds.

-[Gustav] Yeah. -All over.

He's like-- walks in and like,

"Why don't you put this here?"

And he starts taking the diamonds off

and rearranging them and stuff, and I'm like,

they don't know that I'm supposed to do it.

They think that they're designing the dress.

[Kara] Is this your fiancé?

This is my boyfriend.

[Kara] Oh, you wanna check out your dress?

Why is everyone bringing their boyfriend

to check out their dress? Like, I don't--

[Kara] You would think that at least three or four of 'em

are really getting married.

They're bringing their boyfriends,

their fiancés to look at the dress.

Wow. Okay, beautiful couple.

Well, I'm so happy to be working with both of you.

No, the train's gonna be really big

and poofy with all these different colors.

I don't particularly like the dress Austin is making.

It's really pretty.

[Austin] No, it was her complete design.

[Martinique] It really looks "old lady."

[Rob] You're upset with the lace?

No, I mean, I'm okay with the lace thing. Hopefully--

I think, it kinda looks like an old lady to me.

[Rob] She doesn't understand the procedure,

from the idea that she has into the actual garment.

I think, uh, in between there, she gets a little upset.

No, I mean, obviously picture it in--

[Kara] That's a pretty lace. Yeah, it was really expensive.

Fifty bucks a yard.

All right. I think we got it.

Yeah. So you'll be nice and tight,

bustier and corset, nice, sexy.

It's, like, almost--

[Kara] Martinique, you will work it, come on now.

This is the color issue.

-It was fate. -[Nora] It was like, tonal.

It was fate. I love it.

Flowers came out more of a purple color.

I'm actually happier with it now

because I think that red roses are really literal,

but this is looking really good.

[suspenseful music playing]

[Alexandra] I'm really going crazy you guys. I don't understand.

-I'm worried about finishing the dress, period. -[Alexandra] Period.

[camera shutters]

[Jay] God only knows what's gonna happen

at this elimination.

Someone's gonna get left

at the aisle on their wedding day.

[Nora] I mean, there's always a possibility that I'm out,

but my dress is well put together

and it's, you know, as close to what Melissa wanted

as possible with a couple of minor adjustments.

[Kara] My whole thing since I've been here

is I take each challenge at a time,

but the only thing that's in the back of my head

is that runway show. [chuckles]

[Tim] Today, you have until 4:30 to work

and to get ready before we have our runway judging

and you all have a lot to do.

Your models need to go to the L'Oréal hair and makeup rooms

to get prepped for the show.

[upbeat music playing]

Hmm.

I'm truckin' along, as fast as I can.

I mean, this train is just basically like puffing

some frillings out, so it's not like

it has to be this like perfectly pattern-made thing.

With me, it usually all comes together at,

like, the last minute.

Oh, it's so beautiful.

I can't believe I'm looking at my, like, future wedding dress.

Oh.

You look beautiful. Don't cry.

It's so pretty.

-It feels great. -It does?

-Yeah. -Very good.

[Rob] Wow.

are kind of like worrisome.

I'm not really sure if she was happy with it.

because I didn't put a lining in it

and, uh, most girls could handle it.

[Tim] You guys have a lot of work to do.

[Rob] Yeah.

This week from Elle magazine,

we have fashion news director, Anne Slowey.

And we also have Amsale,

a highly sought after wedding dress designer.

Our judges will be scoring your designs

as they come down the runway.

Okay, let's start the show.

[Wendy] The model who was my client

was very inspiring to me

and I really felt that I came up

with a good design for her

and that I ex*cuted it well.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nora] I look at the dress

and I do get a little bit worried.

It's definitely more of her

than me in the dress.

And I was like damn.

You know, I really created this thing

more for her than I did for myself.

[upbeat music playing]

[Rob] When my wedding dress went down the runway,

she looked beautiful.

And you can tell by her face she was happy with it

and we worked together very well.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kevin] I'm not really sure if she was happy with it.

She wanted more diamonds

and I had kinda held back on those.

I wanted, uh, to keep it a little more minimal.

I don't know, it's my job to make her look her best.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kara] I felt really good about the dress.

I think-- I thought Jenny look beautiful in it.

When she said she wanted something very simplistic,

the first thing I thought is, you know,

like a little society girl.

[upbeat music playing]

[Austin] When Julia came out in this wedding gown,

I knew that they would be like, what the hell is that?

This is nothing like a wedding gown

in the traditional sense,

and it's certainly not a typical thing

that I would have designed.

[upbeat music playing]

[Alexandra] I love designing wedding dresses.

I don't know. There's something about it.

There's a lot more meaning in a wedding dress

than just an everyday dress.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] It's hard to work with her.

She's just high maintenance and high drama.

It started off with her idea

but I kind of took it in my own direction.

[tense music playing]

I wanna ask all the designers to please come

represent the best and the worst.

I'm gonna ask to bring out your model again

and you can justify to the judges

your design.

Designers, you're being judged today on your design,

but also you're being judged on

if the model really got what she wanted,

the wedding dress of her dreams.

Jenny, do you like your dress?

I'm like the least emotional person

and I literally thought I was gonna cry,

like, when I saw it.

It's like what I wanted

and then, like, 50 times more.

How about you Morgan?

I wanted something comfortable, sporty, classy.

He did exactly what I wanted.

[Heidi] Melissa.

This is exactly what I wanted.

This is so close to what I dreamed of as a little girl.

[Heidi] Julia,

is this the dress you've always wanted?

Yeah, I mean, I wanted to go for something,

um, a little unusual.

I didn't wanna go for the classic

white wedding dress.

Um, I just feel like that doesn't express me.

So, we really have four happy brides?

So, Michael?

Kara Saun...

I've got to tell you,

the dress fits her really gorgeously.

And I think that, you know, fit,

fabric all together, it's just terrific.

[Anne] Jay, what do you like

and what do you not like about your design?

[Jay] I of course love the bottom.

-[Anne] Uh-hmm. -It's, uh, it's very me.

I tried to really collaborate with her on this.

She wanted Helmut Lang,

-and this is kind of my-- -Slash?

Okay, Calvin Klein.

My only concern is that she can't move in the dress.

-That is my only concern. -No.

-[Heidi] Oh, no. -[Anne] There's not enough--

there's not enough leg room and--

-You have no sweep. -[Anne] It's a very tough,

tough design issue because standing still,

you've got a beautiful column.

I'm not doing a runway walk down my aisle.

You weren't doing runway here. You were just walking.

[Michael] You weren't able to.

-Bad model, bad model. -No.

No, no, no.

-[Anne] Austin. -Yes?

What would you have done differently?

Probably not too much differently.

She had sort of a slightly more dramatic

sort of straight back neckline

that I thought would be a little more flattering

if it was sort of this asymmetrical V thing

that we have going on.

It's interesting,

but I'm having a hard time

imagining it where she's wearing it.

It's very different.

But to the point it's too different--

where do you wear this?

It really is your job as a professional

to be responsible in the end

for your own vision.

-Nora. -Yeah.

What was her brief when you spoke?

She came to me and said I want something

very classic and traditional.

And, um, I think it was pretty successful.

[Michael] My reaction looking at the dress is

it's so traditional bridal.

I think if she went shopping,

she could probably find this dress.

I'm not getting you at all.

The challenge was give them exactly what they want.

I think in this instance,

you-- you've tipped the scale

too much to the client.

And I think you've always got to hold on to you.

Plus, make the client happy, it should be both.

Designers, models, thank you.

I think, first, let's talk about Jay's dress.

It was very youthful and very sensual,

and there was a little bit of intellectuality to it,

but it didn't overwhelm the simplicity.

And again, um, you know,

she looked radiant and comfortable.

And also, what I really notice on him,

although she was very specific of what she wants,

she wants Calvin Klein

and he tried to give her, but he didn't compromise.

[Michael] I think he learned

one thing that we all know as designers and editors,

you know, the same thing, when you watch a show,

if something doesn't move great,

it can k*ll the dress.

-I usually walked really good. -You're falling?

-I'm sorry. -You did well.

That's why I picked you, but not anymore.

-Kara Saun. -Kara Saun.

Yeah, it was gorgeous.

And you could see her model,

her face just lit up.

And isn't that what a wedding dress is supposed to do?

Plus, it looked like something that I know

Kara really loved herself.

You know, it wasn't that she was trying to turn

into another designer,

just to please the customer.

I think that's-- and that's--

that was a big part of this challenge.

Let's talk about Nora's dress.

Uh, I did not care for it at all.

And I have to say the model,

you know, she's very young,

and that's what a young girl dreams of

of the big poofy dress.

[Michael] There are ways to interpret the idea

of a traditional romantic bride

in a much more interesting way than that.

And I really think

that she really just turned

into a dressmaker in this situation.

As a designer, you-- bottom line,

you have to have the maturity and focus

to figure out how to communicate and convey your vision,

so that the client understands

that you really do have their best interests at heart.

How about Austin's dress?

I think, it's disappointing.

I mean, to see talented people

get steamrollered by the client.

But if you're gonna get steamrollered

-by a young girl... -Yeah.

[Michael] And I understand, like,

a non-traditional wedding,

but I don't care if you're getting married

in Williamsburg in a-- in a loft.

You're not wearing that.

They don't like the design.

They judge you on your design.

[Kevin] No, they like the design.

They thought it was too weird.

Okay.

I think we made up our mind?

Let's bring out the designers.
