Last season on Project Runway,

we brought 12 fashion designers to New York City

to compete for a chance at becoming

the next great American designer.

[models] Project Runway!

[Heidi] In fashion, you're either in or you're out.

-Ahh! -Argh!

This is really bad.

We don't have time for this.

[Heidi] And each week, we put this to the test

where it counts' on the runway.

[upbeat music playing]

With each new challenge,

someone had to go.

Auf Wiedersehen. Auf Wiedersehen.

Wiedersehen.

[Heidi] And with so much at stake,

emotions ran high.

Take this off of me.

You're an a*s-wipe.

I'm outta here.

[Kevin] No, no, no, no.

People are just all [bleep] up,

but you're perfect.

I'm done with you.

Three designers earned a shot to prove themselves

at fashion's most prestigious venue:

Olympus Fashion Week.

There, Wendy Pepper,

Kara Saun,

and Jay McCarroll put it all on the line

in front of the fashion industry.

But in the end,

there could be only one winner.

Jay...

congratulations.

You're the winner of Project Runway.

Oh, my God.

I'm the winner.

[in hillbilly accent] I'm a winner!

[mock crying]

[upbeat music playing]

[Jay] After Project Runway aired,

my life turned into a giant tornado.

The spread in ELLE magazine came out.

I mean, a year ago, if you told me

I was going to have a spread in ELLE magazine,

I would've thought you were crazy.

Shot, Jay.

I'll be launching a men's and women's line,

which will be in stores for Fall 2006.

Love me. Buy my clothes.

Now I really do have many, many, many, many, many

many, many options.

That's what Project Runway has afforded me.

Freedom. I ordered a big old plate

of Project Runway this morning,

and boy, do I feel [bleep] good!

[Heidi] This is Project Runway.

[Santino] Let's get it on.

The search for the next big fashion designer.

[Tim] This is a dream come true.

I'm gonna do whatever it takes to win.

Sixteen designers.

Everyone here is crazy.

Drama has to happen.

[Santino] Yes, I'm a competitive person.

[Heidi] Three finalists will make it

to Olympus Fashion Week.

You will see me at Fashion Week.

[Heidi] But only one can be the winner.

Heck yeah, I'm gonna win this.

For these 16 designers,

Project Runway is a chance of a lifetime.

[extreme music playing]

This season on Project Runway,

we launched a nationwide search

to find America's best

up-and-coming fashion designers.

We started in the fashion capital of the world,

New York, where season one winner Jay McCarroll

joined the panel of judges.

Good afternoon.

My passion is designing children's costumes.

But I also want to show you that I believe

as a costumer that you can design couture.

You look like a tap dancer.

♪ Dah, dah, dah, dah dah, dah, dah ♪

♪ Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah ♪

-Dance. -What do you want me to do?

Dance like this?

-Sing. -Oh, I can't sing.

That'll k*ll everyone in this room.

-[Tim] Diana, hi. -Hello.

[Diana] I'm a student at Rhode Island

School of Design, and, um,

I guess my designs have a lot of scientific,

mathematical and technological influence.

I like to do stuff with wearable computers.

This is, um,

one of the wearable computers pieces I've done.

And so it has a camera in the hood up here.

And what happens is it's wired to a wireless

heart rate monitor.

And when your heart rate increases,

it's because you're excited. So it takes photographs

so of what you've gotten excited about.

-And then it'll-- -This is how all those photos

-of you were being taken. -[Jay] You're a whole new type

-of character today. -[designers laughing]

Diana, we are very entranced by you.

We're making you a semifinalist.

[in high voice] Oh, thank you.

[mocking high voice] You're welcome.

[Diana] My name is Diana Eng.

I am 22 years old,

and I'm from Jacksonville, Florida.

When I was in high school,

I was a really big nerd.

I guess right now, I'm just kind of, like,

a hybrid of nerd and fashion designer.

[Heidi] On day two in New York,

season one standout Austin Scarlett

helped us with the search.

First in line.

Are you excited?

[Austin] Project Runway has just

put me so much closer

to what my dreams are.

Even though I didn't win,

I've gotten so much out of it.

-Are you all excited? -Yes.

[Austin] I'm working on a couple different deals.

I'm definitely coming up with a sort of

petit collection for Spring 2006.

-You're the last girl on line. -Yeah.

[Austin] Being on Project Runway

will always be sort of that turning point in my life.

I came on the last day of auditions.

It worked for me.

[upbeat music playing]

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Um, I've wanted to be a designer

ever since I was in diapers.

[designer] I spent 15 years in New York

making space suits for chickens.

[designer] My sense of style

fun, um, kind of quirky.

[sighs] Come on in.

Hey, guys, how are you doing?

-[Austin] Wanna show us, -Oh, yeah, sure,

-absolutely. -What you brought?

Um, this is just a blazer

that's laced like a corset and fitted like a corset.

[Tim] What do you bring to the show

that's special and unique?

[designer] I think I bring a street culture,

an understanding of couture,

an understanding of high fashion,

and also multiculturalism.

I think I bring that to the table.

[Tim] I have to say we're really responding

very, very well to you.

We're making you a semifinalist.

[designer] Okay, thank you very much.

My name is Zulema.

I am from New York City,

and I am 28 years old.

When I was growing up, we didn't have,

you know, frivolous things.

So for the longest time,

I made all my clothing by hand.

I'm gonna do my best to win.

'Cause trust me, I didn't pack lightly.

[Heidi] From New York, we moved on to Houston,

where season one's Wendy Pepper

had some words of wisdom for the crowd.

I had this aura around me,

and that's what you guys need to bring in the door.

I'm in a really happy place in my life.

After all the turmoil after the show,

it's a great surprise to me

how easily my family rallied around me.

I'm Wendy.

Did anybody see season one?

I want to see somebody come in and say,

"The future of American design lies with me."

So what makes you

the next great American designer?

What are they gonna get with you?

What's the aesthetic?

You're so tough. You're just like on the show.

[designers laughing]

[Tim] That's our Wendy.

I like strapless dresses,

and I like to show that I can do

casual fabrication mixed

with more dressier fabrication.

So what are you hoping to get out of the show?

Honestly, I've really wanted to do

the fashion show in New York runway,

even just to make it to the top three.

What do you think it takes to get to that final three?

You have to love this,

because it doesn't pay you first.

[Tim] Chloe, congratulations.

You're a semifinalist for season two.

-[Chloe] Okay. -[Tim] Are you excited?

I am excited! [laughs]

My name is Chloe Dao. I'm 33.

I'm from Houston, Texas.

I have a clothing store there.

My business actually is going really well.

And I have a little, small following,

and they're pretty loyal.

I never thought I would be able

to be in all the stores.

So Project Runway is an opportunity

to just do that, the ultimate dream.

[Heidi] Our next stop was Miami,

where season one's Robert Plotkin

offered his expertise.

[upbeat music playing]

How you doing?

Do you mind if I take a seat here?

No, go right ahead.

[Robert] After the show and I had, like,

people coming up to me. Everyone from, like,

little 12-year-old girls wanting to hug me

to, like, 60-year-old men.

So, do you come here often?

Playgirl wants to do, like, a full spread.

So I don' know what that means,

if that's, you know, frontal or rear.

There's a Web site about my a*s.

God bless everybody,

you know, who liked my a*s.

So why Project Runway?

I've come out of a coma, so I think I have a great story.

Pink is my favorite thing. I absolutely love pink.

[Robert] I mean, you have to work under a lot of stress.

So you can't just always focus yourself on pink.

[designer] I'm trying to incorporate

weird objects into clothing.

-These are condoms? -[designer] Yeah.

Mind if I take some?

[designer] Hi. Oh, my God, you were on TV.

Well, all you were. Okay.

[Christina] So tell us about yourself.

[designer] Well, I made this portfolio just for y'all,

and I have been busting my booty. 'Cause this is, like,

my dream, I'm gonna cry if I want to.

Um, okay, I'm focused.

I know, I'm like, just calm down, Heidi.

I get all nervous, I'm all, like, a spaz.

Why don't you show us what you feel

is your strongest piece?

[designer] This is an old scarf I had.

I was gonna throw it away, and I'm like, you know what?

This would be cool sleeves.

And then this is just, like, a tapestry.

It's actually upholstery fabric.

[Tim] We're really thrilled to tell you

that we're making you a semifinalist.

-Can I hug y'all? -[designers laughing]

Okay. Oh, my God! I got in!

I'm so excited! Yay!

My name is Heidi Standridge.

I am 25 years old.

Currently I live in Atlanta, Georgia.

Think "in". This is what it's all about.

[Heidi] Our final stop was L.A.

where Kara Saun helped us

size up season two hopefuls.

[Kara] I've been going nonstop since Project Runway.

I mean, it has led to so many amazing things for me.

I mean, I have business plan writers,

I have marketing companies.

Project Runway has definitely been

one of those amazing experiences.

And what would make you stand out on Project Runway?

I'm an instructor at the Fashion Institute of Design.

I teach pattern making and sketching.

All my students are like,

"This would be perfect for you.

You need to sell yourself."

I missed the mark

where I should've probably gone to New York.

And so I felt that this could be a great

avenue for the world

to see Nick Verreos and my designs.

This is just a bias-cut gown, fishtail hem,

what I call my angel wing back

with a cowl front, and then the invisible zipper.

It's silk charmeuse with a print.

I call this the tornado print.

Well, we love you.

My name is Nick Verreos.

And I'm 38 years old.

Oh, my God, I got the shivers.

I probably should've gone to New York

instead of going to Los Angeles.

So I still haven't finished my dream.

But I'm coming back.

[Raymundo] I come from a Roman Catholic,

Mexican, um, family.

So my dad is completely, like, insulted.

He thinks that this is really "g*y"

and stuff like that, so I'm like, "I am g*y."

This is a shrunken jacket

with, um, lining and matching pants, wide-legged.

[Tim] We're very pleased to tell you

that you've made it to the semifinals.

Oh, my God, thank you so much.

My name is Raymundo Baltazar-Flores.

I've actually just debuted my first collection ever.

I didn't want to use my name, because I didn't want

to present the collection that I had in mind.

So I'm just went for it and called it Young ba*ls.

'Cause it takes ba*ls to really, like,

want to put your stuff out there.

This is a corset,

you know, knit jersey piece.

My biggest ambition is to become, like, the next

American couturier.

I have to tell you, before you came in,

we all said to each other if we see one more corset,

-we're gonna scream. -[judge laughs]

This is really good.

[Tim] Congratulations.

My name is Santino.

I'm 30 years of age.

As early as I can remember,

fashion was a big part of my life.

I won a contest in high school.

And I came out to Los Angeles, and I went to design school.

I want to show the world

that I'm a talented designer.

And I'm the best.

Project Runway.

Santino is the next great

American designer.

[Heidi] Of course, being in L.A.,

things were bound to get a little strange.

I like fantasy.

[whimsical music playing]

[screams like a monkey]

-Hi, how are you? -[Tim] Hello.

Pleasure to meet you.

[Kara] Now, would you wear pants on the show?

-If you ask me to, I will. -[laughter]

[Heidi] But L.A.'s biggest surprise

was when season one's Daniel Franco

walked through the door.

[Kara] Is that Daniel Franco?

[Tim] Oh, my goodness.

Daniel Franco? How are you?

-[Daniel] Good afternoon. -Great to see you.

[Daniel] In case you missed last season,

I was the guy that got cut first.

Daniel is out.

[Daniel] That's why I'm gonna give this another shot.

There's gonna be less talk of bliss, that's understood.

I'm Daniel Franco.

And I'd like to wish you bliss.

So why am I back?

[Tim] Why are you back?

Why would I wanna come back

into the lion's den, you ask.

Well, I don't feel I was given

a really good shot to show what I could do.

I mean, I got cut first.

You know, and it hurt. It hurt.

But mainly it hurt because I wasn't able to show

what I could do with fabric.

With cut, fit, proportion.

And so I'd like to show you what I'm about now.

And see...

what your take is on my collection.

I am a tailor, Tim.

It's what I do.

This is one of my pieces.

This is cashmere angora,

mixed with silk velvet.

And I have it here fully lined in silk dupioni.

This is another look from the collection.

It's not about the hair.

Or the designer suits, which are gorgeous.

You have to let your work speak for itself.

That sounds like truth to me.

[Tim] And it is.

Daniel, can you step outside for just a minute?

-Absolutely. -[Tim] Do you mind?

Thank you very much for your intention.

We're gonna see you again.

Just--just step outside for a minute.

We have to caucus.

-This is beautiful, -[Kara] I think it's

-a no-brainer. -stunning work.

-Kara Saun? -[Kara] Oh, I agree.

Gorgeous. Gorgeous fabrics,

-gorgeous construction. -I mean, I have to say...

-we believed in him before. -Mm-hmm.

I mean, there were just all sorts of aspects to him

that were irritating, independent

of his failure with the first challenge,

which went beyond using poor materials poorly.

Is this looking too much like butcher paper?

It is butcher paper.

[Tim] Also, about how to use time well.

[Daniel F] It took me a long time to make this binding.

Which is a tin foil.

It'd be interesting to see

if after now he knows everything that he knows,

if he'll be able to come back differently.

[Tim] Daniel, come on in.

Okay.

[Daniel] I'd love to, Tim.

We're going to be judging you in two hours.

I'm about to scream.

It was a merely desperate situation

[upbeat music playing]

After the nationwide search,

the panel of judges narrowed it down

to 16 semifinalists.

And we brought them to New York.

To help us choose this season's designers,

we gave our semifinalists a challenge.

A week before they arrived in New York,

we sent them six yards of fabric,

$20 for supplies,

and asked them to create a garment

that expresses who they are as a fashion designer.

Their chances of making it to season two

depended on this challenge.

[upbeat music playing]

Yeah, I got a haircut.

I look like Bruce Lee. [laughs]

Waa!

My name is Guadalupe Vidal.

Growing up, some of my family

were boat people from Vietnam.

Work was kind of hard to find.

So we had machines in our garage

and piles of cut fabric and everything.

So we all just sewed in the garage.

Yeah, I think Project Runway is a gateway

to opening up my own fashion company.

-What's your name? -Kirsten.

-Kirsten, nice to meet you. -Hi.

I'm Kirsten Ehrig.

I'm an attorney, on the side,

I started a line of swimwear.

I always say that my bathing suits

are designed for a 3:00 lunch

at Club Cinquante-Cinq

in, uh, Saint Tropez.

[Andrae] My name is Andrae Gonzalo.

I, for the last three years, have had, um, my own

little studio boutique in downtown L.A.

I've been just creating

little collections and showing them.

But I've just closed my shop, which is kind of sad.

It's--it's, like, the end of a dream.

It's, you know, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" time.

This opportunity is a shock of a lifetime.

I mean, to be singled out with some of the greatest

young design minds of my time period.

[upbeat music playing]

-Hey, how you doing? -I'm good, how are you?

[Daniel V] My name is Dan Vosovic.

I'm 24 years old.

Coming straight out of school with the fact

that I'm 24 and I may not have as much

industry experience-- I don't consider that

a disadvantage. I feel I am as good as anyone else is.

Ah.

[designer] Where are you from?

L.A.? Yeah, L.A.

L.A. representin'.

-Kara, how are you? -Zulema.

Zulema?

I'm Kara Janx. I come from

Johannesburg, South Africa.

I really believe in the dream

of making fashion this big reality for me

and making it my lifestyle.

Are you from, like, a lot of academes?

-Is your family like... -Yeah?

[Guadalupe] So y'all smart?

Ya got brains on ya!

[Emmett] My name is Emmett McCarthy.

I'm 42 years old.

My dream was actually

to be a woman's designer.

I got a little sidetracked.

I was offered a position

as a designer for men's wear.

I'm very excited to show what my ideas are

for womens wear.

I love this conversation.

My name is John Wade. I'm 24.

And my dream for fashion is being recognized

for having a unique and innovative aesthetic,

and walking down the street,

and seeing people wearing my clothes.

Where did you go to school?

-I'm actually self-taught. -You are?

My name is Marla Duran.

I'm from Allentown, Pennsylvania.

I have my own store.

I have a grown son, he's 26.

And he's really excited about me

being on the show, and I think he thinks

there's no reason I can't win.

Make a wish.

-Oh, man. -I think we're one short.

-Who's the mystery person? -[designer] The mystery person?

Yes, I want to know who the mystery person is.

[designer] Oh, look at you.

Oh, my goodness gracious.

[Andrae] When I saw Daniel Franco, I was like,

oh, my goodness, I can't believe he's back.

Oh, dear.

[Chloe] Daniel Franco showed up.

I was the first to introduce myself.

Actually saw his work in L.A. Apparel News.

And I thought it was really well done.

So I thought he deserved a second chance.

humbled through humiliation, basically.

It's made me a different person.

I'm not here for the celebrity of it all.

You know? I'm here to be a designer.

This is Tim Dunn, and he's gonna be your mentor.

[Tim] Hello, everyone.

There are some familiar faces

to me this season. Daniel Franco,

as many of you know, was with us for season one.

And I should tell you that I've known Emmett

since he was a high school student applying to Parsons.

Um, I do want to assure you though

that I'm committed to all of you.

So again, welcome.

[Heidi] Grab your bags,

and let's have a look inside.

In here you have your work space.

[designers talking at once]

All right, do you guys want to come over here

and gather around?

[Tim] A week ago,

we sent you six yards of fabric,

$20 for supplies.

And we asked you to create

an outfit that best expresses

who you are as a designer.

And we're gonna be judging you

in two hours on the runway.

[Tim] You may be wondering,

on that note, why it is,

if you're counting, there are only 14 work spaces.

[Heidi] This is the semifinals.

There are 16 of you here.

But only 14 will advance today

to be contestants on Project Runway.

In two hours,

two of you will be going home.

[tense music playing]

[Tim] You should each have your design with you.

We have randomly assigned you models.

And you will have two hours

to fit them,

to bring them to the TRESemmé hair salon

and to the L'Oréal Paris makeup room

and prep them for the runway.

[Nick] I had been told to expect a package.

It was $20

and six yards of muslin.

Muslin is unbleached cotton.

All designers use it.

It's just a basic fabric

that's used for draping.

The instructions said you had to create

something that best reflects you

as a fashion designer.

I love this. That would look good.

That would make your boos look big.

-I'm really hoping. -Support it.

One of the big g*ns that I bring in

is the idea of pretty.

And, of course, working with the muslin--

it's like a huge challenge.

Muslin, in general, is not a very pretty fabric.

It's kind of coarse, unfinished.

It's, like, the-- the hillbilly of fabrics.

It's sweet, isn't it? [laughs]

-It's sweet. -I like to be sweet.

[Heidi S.] My whole design thing is, like,

sophisticated funk.

Using the muslin, I think I was able to really create

that kind of feel and that kind of, like who I am.

-It's okay. -[Santino] Yeah, it looks good.

Just to be here and to do my thing--

like, that's just cool.

I mean, I am from Alabama.

Like, how many famous designers do you know from Alabama?

It's a pretty color.

Thanks, thank you very much.

See, I would wear that.

[Santino] Trying to create something

out of six yards of muslin--

it was tough doing that.

But I really am happy with what I did.

I think it's pretty amazing.

Oh, my God.

Hi, how are you. Nice to meet you.

I have an innate feeling for models,

because they're my muses.

They're what makes my garment come to life.

So I was ecstatic about her.

Ayayayayay.

-Hi there. -Hi, I'm Rebecca.

[Tim] Everybody--

just for a second.

The time constraint is serious, it's real.

And we're on a very tight

group of deadlines, all right?

[man] Grab your girls.

Grab a seat.

[upbeat music playing]

We had two hours to get ready for the show

of which we had to balance that between

monitoring hair and makeup,

making the proper adjustments--

How's that feel?

[Zulema] --and just trying to juggle the time.

Can you breathe?

I don't know why it's not working.

[Diana] In the garment,

the magnets were used as closures.

And then you could open the skirt

and connect it in the back

for a different silhouette.

The polarity got reversed on

one of the magnets in the back,

so when she tried to stick it on it,

it repelled it. I don't know

what I was thinking with the magnets.

I think I still have a little bit of time.

[upbeat music playing]

Pose it to the side.

So that-- that's the pose.

At the end--

I need to sew that.

I need to bring out my wrists.

Oh, you do? Did you put it on?

Start getting this stuff done,

'cause I'm just worried about time.

'Cause it's gonna slip by quickly.

Eyebrows I actually wanted a little bit darker too,

'cause it's blending too much into her hair.

[upbeat music playing]

Designers, models, this is it.

We have to stop what we're doing.

We're going downstairs to the runway.

[Santino] I'm really happy with what I have, and...

here we go.

[Nick] I've got some nerves in me as well.

Oh, I'm about to scream, you know?

[Daniel] When we were running out of time,

it was really scary.

Okay, it'll work, it'll work.

And then the phobia started kicking in.

Because I thought, oh, my God,

I'm gonna get called on stage, I can tell.

I just--I just felt it, you know what I mean?

I thought all this effort to get back on the show.

Everything I've done.

I had my own life, I had my own collection,

and now I'm going back to Project Runway 2

for another beating.

[Tim] Daniel...

[Heidi] Coming up on Project Runway.

Your outfits better be amazing.

[upbeat music playing]

[designer] I feel like flying.

[Diana] And that's what you work.

[Daniel F] Things were out of my control.

[tense music playing]

[designers giggling]

Welcome to the runway.

As you know in fashion,

one day you're in,

and the next day you're out.

Remember, this is the semifinals.

to compete in Project Runway.

And two of you will be out.

Your challenge was to design an outfit that expresses

who you are as a designer.

We gave you six yards of fabric,

$20 for supplies,

and one week to put it together.

Now, that is a lot of time for Project Runway.

So your outfits better be amazing.

All right, let's meet the judges.

Fashion designer Michael Kors.

Nina Garcia, fashion director of ELLE magazine.

And myself.

[designers] Hi, Heidi.

[Heidi] We will be scoring your designs

as they come down the runway.

Fourteen of you will move on to season two.

The designer with the highest score

will be named the winner.

And two of you will go home.

[tense music playing]

Let's start the show.

[upbeat music playing]

[Chloe] When Grace, my model,

was walking down the runway,

I just thought, Wow, that is my gown,

and I hope it's good enough.

[upbeat music playing]

[Raymundo] When I saw my model

wearing my dress, I was just overwhelmed.

I actually, like, felt like crying.

I was like, wow, this is it.

I am here. And I'm doing it.

[upbeat music playing]

[Daniel V.] Seeing Michael and Nina and Heidi

sitting about ten feet away from you,

watching their eyes move up and down as she walks.

I do have to admit that anxiety went up a lot.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nick] I was pretty confident

that my stuff was jammin'.

But all of a sudden, my heart started racing.

And I'm like, could they be blind?

And maybe not have seen

what everybody else has seen?

[upbeat music playing]

[Santino] I'm proud of this dress

and how much of me is in that dress

and how much soul is in that dress.

I think it's pretty undeniable.

[upbeat music playing]

[Zulema] I was so happy.

It's everything I imagined it to be.

I was just hoping that the judges were as happy.

They could've looked at it and said, "This girl's crazy.

What's going on with those shoulder pads?"

[upbeat music playing]

[Emmett] The dress was made for a summer afternoon,

right off of the beach.

I was very happy with Maria.

[Guadalupe] Usually, I use a lot of color.

It was a pretty plain muslin garment.

Is there even a chance for me to even move past?

[Andrae] This glowing human being

turned my dress into everything

that it was supposed to be.

So that was really fantastic.

[John] It was exciting.

It was very tailored and sweet

and colorful and wearable.

That's my design philosophy.

[Marla] My outfit--it's original.

It has my stamp on it.

And it has a kind of arty, organic feel.

I feel like it is true to my point of view.

[Heidi S.] When I saw my garment walk down the runway,

I thought, how pretty are you?

Because I just thought it was pretty.

Like, she just looked pretty. And that's just me.

[Kara] It's always cool

to see a garment on a body

and the way it moves.

There's a life to the garment suddenly.

[upbeat music playing]

[Kirsten] It was great.

I loved the way Claudia's hair

was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

I love the silhouette.

Claudia made it work. She made it really look great.

[Diana] When she came down the runway,

I was really, really scared that the magnets

wouldn't work, and then they didn't.

I don't know if the judges are going to see it.

I started getting really nervous

about maybe being knocked out.

[upbeat music playing]

[Daniel] I started getting, like, this freaky sensation

that I had from season one. I knew something was wrong.

I could tell that the bust for Rebecca

just did not fit her. And you're thinking, oh, no.

Did the judges see that? Aw, God.

And things were out of control.

I'm looking for someone with a point of view,

a point of difference, but at the same time,

someone who's gonna captivate women.

[Heidi] As a model, I want something that's different

and unique with a little bit of attitude and a new vision.

There has to be a little something

that makes them different than all the others.

[Nina] This is the moment for them to show me

how creative they can be.

because we will determine who makes it or not.

So, what brought you back?

I wanted to come back actually

to show you guys what I could really do.

You know, when I first saw you I said,

"My God, he's back."

But you know what? Fashion's full of people

who kind of bounce in and bounce back.

I mean, it's kind of par for the course.

So, interesting to see that you're willing

to sort of jump in the pot again.

Can I see the back of the dress?

-It looks big in the front. -[Michael] This--

the cup is driving me crazy.

[Heidi] Yeah, the cup is big.

[Michael] I mean 'cause she's got a great figure.

And if it makes her look big,

something's going on.

I don't know what it is.

I have to say I like Santino's dress a lot.

It's fun and it's very, very pretty.

The baby doll dress like that can look very juvenile

and this doesn't.

What is your design philosophy?

You know, I enjoy old world techniques,

third world techniques

and those are the things I want to put into

every article of clothing I ever design.

Heidi, do you want to tell me a little bit

about your design or what your aesthetic is?

[Heidi S] Yes, ma'am.

I like things that you can actually wear.

I like when you, um, you feel pretty.

And so, it's sophistication with a little funk.

And this funk is just that her stomach shows a little bit.

And just this doily kind of effect in the back

gives it a little flair.

I'm just curious, you seem to,

out of everyone here,

you used the most trim.

I mean, if I took the trim away from it...

I--I'm a--I'm a little-- you had a week,

so it surprises me,

if I took the ribbon off the hem,

if I took the ribbon around her bust,

if I took her lace off,

she's got a bandeau and an A-line skirt.

I have a question for Diana.

What are you telling me with your design?

I like my designs to be well researched

and when I develop them I want it to be in way

more than just clothing.

Can I see it from the back?

Uh, the magnets are having

difficulties with polarity. It keeps switching,

because the polarity of the magnets is rotating.

Oh, so it's attached with magnets.

I--you know, I can't see from here.

I couldn't tell either.

I mean, I don't get why it does that.

[Heidi] How about yours, John?

What was your inspiration?

It was hot and summery when I was doing it

and I had all my windows open and I was like

I need to make a summer dress so that's what I did.

When you were putting it together,

did you know immediately that dying fabric

and working with fabric

is one of your things

or not necessary.

No, not necessarily.

I did it in eight hours.

Why'd you do it in eight when you had a whole week?

This--it doesn't necessarily take a week, you know,

I don't think.

Well, it's pretty obvious to me, you know?

I thought the dress was just great looking.

Creative.

He took the week and he actually spent time

making something really handmade and beautiful.

-It was beautiful. -Yeah, great looking.

Very, very complicated outfit.

It's interesting. It's a little tricky,

with the, you know two skirts, the two looks,

but there was something there that I found,

at least I found very interesting.

She tried to show a lot of things that she could do

which sometimes could be too much.

No, it wasn't your fault.

I mean, it might be a little complicated,

but at least she really took the time

and really made something.

-If you think about John... -Oh.

[Heidi] He should've really spent more time

than eight hours. He's like, "I did it in eight hours."

[Michael] I can't believe he admitted it.

[Nina] It was just very simple.

You can find that dress, I don't know,

on the back of a red dye bottle.

[Nina] He did say the color.

I mean, take the-- that color away,

take the tye-dye and you have nothing.

-Nothing. -Really boring.

-Really boring. -Nothing.

and what you said totally was the case.

I thought when you take the trimming away,

you take the lace away

and what is left of the piece that we gave you?

-There was not much there. -There was nothing there.

It was drooped and a piece from here to here.

Well, and I do think that sometimes,

she did make her pitch about, you know, it's pretty.

But what happens is sometimes pretty can be boring.

How about Daniel?

When you saw the dress,

first off the fit wasn't there and boobs were insane.

-[Nina] Yeah, it was bit big. -[Michael] I mean, you know,

just made her look like this.

I can't figure Daniel out.

who he was last time.

You know, to go first time, we really threw him off.

He's already had the chance.
